Books of 2022
In 2022, I read fewer books overall (143, down from last year’s ridiculous 303) but I did manage to cut down on my romance novel reading---a respectable 52% instead of last year’s 78%. The consequence of this is that I did actually read more good books this year, books I could talk about with other people and inspired feelings and thoughts that rattled around my head afterwards. Plus some actual nonfiction!
Going through all of them, what I liked about them, why they made such an impression, would take a while---plus I’ve already talked about most of these in my books tag. So I’m just going to invite everyone to ask about anything that catches their eye!
BEST FICTION (IN THE ORDER I READ THEM) ** indicates a particular favorite
The House of Small Shadows, Adam Nevill
**The Cipher, Kathe Koja
Eartheater, Dolores Reyes
Hadriana in All My Dreams, René Depestre
**Tender is the Flesh, Agustina Bazterrica
You've Lost a Lot of Blood, Eric LaRocca
The Beautiful Ones, Silvia Moreno-Garcia
The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle
War for the Oaks, Emma Bull
Girl A, Abigail Dean
This Might Hurt, Stephanie Wrobel
**Burning Girls and Other Stories, Veronica Schanoes
Eva Ibbotson’s A Countess Below Stairs, A Company of Swans, & Magic Flutes
Deerskin, Robin McKinley
BEST NONFICTION
An Iliad, Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare
**Capitalist Realism, Mark Fisher
Urban Folklore in the Paperwork Empire, Alan Dundes & Carl R. Pagter
**Fun Home, Alison Bechdel
**Men, Women & Chainsaws, Carol J. Clover
[romance novels and most disliked books under the cut---I did give these a bit of an explanation, because being asked about romance novels makes me itchy. We shall never speak of these again.]
ROMANCE NOVEL READING
Vivienne Lorret (How to Forget a Duke, Ten Kisses to Scandal, The Rogue to Ruin, When a Marquess Loves a Woman, How to Steal a Scoundrel's Hear) Admittedly, nothing particularly unique about these---however, they are more traditional romance and a pretty decent attempt at actual regency-style manners, so I enjoyed myself reading them.
Olivia Atwater (Half a Soul, Ten Thousand Stitches, Longshadow) I actually sincerely loved these! Supernatural historical romance from a solid writer. Plus, the series has angrier, more class-conscious sensibilities than all the romance novels I've read---and is less hypocritical about it too, since the characters are largely not nobility, and there's no marrying dukes involved.
Alice Coldwater (His Forsaken Bride, An Ill-Made Match, The Unlovely Bride, Wed By Proxy) So admittedly, I don’t recommend reading all four of these together---it becomes increasingly clear that Coldwater can only write one and a half heroines, and both of them are excessively weepy. Nevertheless, I took a total leap of faith on this (historical fantasy romance isn't typically my genre) and was rewarded by a lot of delightful pining, some court politics, and the 1.5 heroines she can write are fun to follow around.
C.L. Wilson (The Winter King, The Sea King) If last year was about reading every romance novel about dukes I could find, this year was about finding all the fantasy romance novels. (Shout out to Stephanie Garber who also helped feed this inexplicable urge!) Anyway, this series was fun, similar to the above in that it’s fake fantasy politics and some romance, and that’s a combination that works for me.
MOST DISLIKED BOOKS
Redshirts, John Scalzi I have never despised a book quite like this one! I still can't tell if it's the smirkingly obvious Star Trek meta of it all, or the hat on a hat that is the last chapter/coda 1. I did like coda 3, but only because it felt like the only quietly, emotionally sincere part of the whole stupid book.
High Times in the Low Parliament, Kelly Robinson Novellas must be tricky to write---I’ve read a fistful or so, and find them to be wildly variable in quality and effectiveness. That said....the author’s attempt to resolve entrenched political problems via dance made me roll my eyes so hard I strained a muscle. It ruined what might have otherwise been a fun time, since I did like the narrator's charmingly disaffected perspective
Always Be My Duchess, Amalie Howard Emotional honesty and vulnerability has no place in romance novels. I read historical romance specifically so people won’t talk about their feelings, and the fact that romancelandia keeps shoehorning therapy-speak into my regency may in fact be my villain origin story. However, even worse than that is this book’s use of “totally” and "patriarchy" in a completely ahistorical way, betraying a nauseating disinterest in the time period being written about. Worse than even that: the total fucking coward's move it is to write a Pretty Woman fic but then have the heroine be a virgin and not a sex worker at all. God knows we can't be interesting.
Death, Laura Thelassa This one is my own fault. I did think "hey isn't that the romance series with the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse? I read one of those a long time ago; I should give it another shot." (I promise, I regretted it instantly.) However, it is another excellent entry in the long list of cowardly books that refuse to actually lean into enemies to lovers as a trope. Also, if you have undying protagonists? they should kill each other more.

Things I've had Rocky do in DnD
Please note that my brother is the DM and will sometimes put in special interests for the group
Ms Tracy J Butler if you read this, I hope you have a good laugh
He's the only male character in this party. The others are a Tiefling Warlock, a Saytr Cleric, and later on a Half Elf Rogue
The cleric will occasionally just take off her clothes and chivalry dictates he must avoid his gaze
Though he will also just randomly take off his clothes so what the hell
First session did the Old Man River Poem when the chance arrived
Used vicious mockery on a goblin that didn't understand him but felt the need to go home and cry. Then he set its home on fire
Rolled a Nat20 on a chance encounter and had a unicorn nearly trample him
Said Unicorn adores him bc he's a virgin (I'm assuming) and keeps slut shaming his friends
My brother gave everyone who wanted one a love interest, Rocky's is a calico tabaxi ship captain (her name is Astrid)
They have a history but not a romantic one as Rocky lost her 400 gold worth of cargo and broke her ship's mast
Unintentionally got the warlock's hand bitten off by a were shark
Don't worry he had the unicorn fix it (begged)
They all have mounts, Rocky's is a fire bat named Novasa. Almost went with Sludge Rudge Begrudge (a snail) but didn't cuz I almost didn't play as Rocky
Keeps loudly bullying the Cleric for her crush on the local shop keep and now he's unofficially banned from going to shop at the same time as her
Went to an endless party also owned by a Satyr. Said satyr kept acting weird to our Satyr So when we investigated his room, Rocky took his "suspicious" fuzzy handcuffs
He also met a teleporting magic chicken named Margarita at that party. She really liked to nest on his hat
During a fight, he broke a man's legs near a lake. And then just left him by the lake. That man drowned but hey technically the water killed him not Rocky.
Found the undercity by following Mordecai (I get chance encounters with Lackadaisy characters except Freckle and Ivy)
Went to an underground gambling ring with the Cleric, her God is one of gambling so she kept cheating
The workers started to realize she was cheating, so in order to make a quick get away, Rocky loudly announced she was having a baby.
Satyr Cleric was clearly not pregnant but I rolled a Nat20 and got away with it.
Now they won't go back to the casino out of embarrassment (well her's not Rocky)
Later on he somehow, SLAYED A DRAGON. Like he got the killing blow. He kept a fang as keepsake and got a dagger made out of it.
Made friends with a Fae Prince who's just as chaotic as him. His name is Jasper
Helped Treants and as a reward they gave him 10 gallons of Treant Maple Syrup. Currently has 4 gallons left
Set up a daycare deal with a swamp witch named Zamboni (Don't worry he's not the babysitter)
So he's wanted in one city that's not actually a city it's more of a group traveling merchant shops/ships on the ocean. That's where he got his ear nicked in this world
He decided to sneak back on... in drag. DESPITE HAVING DESGUISE SELF
His love interest Astrid gave him a black ball gown to wear and her first mate gave him a blonde wig. Our Warlock did his make up that looked like a 6 yr old experimenting with a makeup set.
I had to roll for every interaction he did. When I rolled a 2 he tripped and ripped the dress down the back. The wig fell off as he tumbled
They immediately recognize him and he went sprinting back to the ship he came on in his underwear and boots.
What he did to be wanted was "accidentally?" set fire to a boat that turned out to have fireworks.
I think this is when his love interest caught feelings bc she's usually stoic but was cackling at this
He ate rocks with harpies
He melted a man's face off for threatening his friends (and his sweetheart) during a pirate battle
During the pirate battle Astrid gave a man four butt cheeks
And a gods damn Turtle Dragon showed up wanting to kill the fighting ships but Rocky knowing the spell Tongues was able to talk it out with her and she destroyed the pirate ship
(Here's where special interests start to show)
They helped Iplier Fischbach King of the Court of Finaf, received a Mr Hippo Magnet as a token
Cooked with Undyne and Papyrus from Undertale (surprise it caught fire)
Had to climb a gi huge fuck tree as he was the only one with claws. Paragliding down with a giant feather that he could barely lift

but... hes basically a camp here and there oc so im makin it official
hes like...kinda a counselor i guess? official supervisor of the creativity cabin
(hes also pretty much ambrose bassford he/him classics. but. s okay i still love him /j)
uhh heres my old art of him that made me remember he existed
Tumblr media
not super sure if i like the new drawing more. but. it exists so
julian richardson
he/him (ftm)
counselor of creativity cabin
aroaceflux
he wears the silly oversized letterman cuz...um...his mom got it for him and he likes it (shhh not me making up lore on the spot to justify my silly character design whims)
boots for hiking bc summer camp or something
idk if chnt actually has counselor uniforms that theyre sposed to wear or something but hed either wear the camp polo or just like. a graphic tee
(also when he was a mismag oc it was also an unsleeping city crossover and i think he was vox phantasma of. idk wherever he lives.) so...um some kind of like dream prophecies ig

LU MLP au (part 1)
Is this cringe? Probably.
Do I care? Nope.
Do I also do whatever the hell I want? ABSOLUTELY! I know technically speaking, all of these boys should be alicorns due to Divine Intervention, but... that's boring and I want diversity! Lol
Disclaimer: I haven't drawn horses since I was like 7 years old so these drawings probably suck and I'm not even sorry about it, I just wanted to draw ponies lol
Cutiemarks will be covered in a separate post since that gets a bit complicated. This post will cover Hyrule, Legend, and Wild.
HYRULE
Yarrowtrek - Pegasus
It would probably make sense for Hyrule to be an earth pony, but being a pegasus would make it a lot easier for him to get around (and also get lost). His nickname is quite literally traveler, so I figured being a pegasus would work quite well since, y'know, he likes to go places.
Hyrule does still possess magic despite not being a unicorn. When he casts a spell, it takes a lot more energy than it would for a unicorn - and much more concentration as well.
As for his name, yarrow is a herb often used to heal cuts and other lacerations, and trek is just very fitting. Lmao.
Tumblr media
LEGEND
Trinket Thief - Unicorn
I'm not explaining why Legend is a unicorn. I promise I will explain the green magic aura thing at some point.
Due to my inability to draw bracelets on a horse, I have simply opted to give him those horseshoes. He's slaying.
As for his name, this man lives to steal all the magical trinkets. He just didn't expect to be stealing them from dungeons at the young age of like, ten or something lol
Tumblr media
WILD
Wildberry - Alicorn (but it's complicated)
For someone whose entire personality is hating Wild (/j) I sure do manage to give him a lot more content than the rest
Originally, Wild was a pegasus before he died. The shrine of resurrection was initially created by mighty unicorn sages, but it was never adequately tested. After his one-hundred-year sleep in the shrine, he was regenerated, but doing so infused him with unicorn magic. However, the shrine did not have the ability to heal one of his wings due to the damage from the guardian blast, leaving him grounded. Furthermore, the shrine changed his magic aura from green to light blue, making him an exception. So while he is technically an alicorn, he is unable to fly. Maybe one day Flora or Purah can make him a suitable prosthetic.
His hair is dyed the colors of the champions, + an extra one for Zelda. He just likes to feel like they're with him and be able to remember them, even if their spirits were freed, y'know?
Originally Wild was gonna be named Wildflower, but that was more fitting for his Zelda. Instead, it got changed to Wildberry, due to his love for cooking.
Tumblr media
Other characters will be covered in future posts

Blood of the Light
Blood of the Light https://ift.tt/hxzEVbT by DarkCloud190 Hermione is the Princess of Nyxarria. A kingdom that worships the Goddess Nyx that is enshrouded in perpetual night. Draco is the King of Hecatea. A kingdom that worships the Goddess Hecate that is a stream of endless labyrinthine pathways. Magic is a gift from the Gods. With each royal family being shown great favor. Both would love nothing more than to see the other dead. But it a world of Gods, magic, and deceit - nothing is as it seems. _____________________ “Show the proper respect to your King,” he hissed. Hermione laughed demurely, fluttering her lashes. Fierce determination settled into her gaze that locked with Draco Malfoy’s. “You are not my anything,” she hissed. Something ticked in his jaw, anger laced with a restrained sort of – amusement. Barely noticeable, he tilted his head to Blaise. The dull bite of his wand was replaced with the sharp point of his blade, nicking the skin enough that a small trickle of blood dripped down her throat. “What do you think, Princess?” Hermione dipped into a low curtsy, exaggerating the motion but refusing to lower her head. With embers burning behind the golden hues, she hissed softly, “Your Majesty.” Words: 5044, Chapters: 1/40, Language: English Fandoms: Harry Potter - J. K. Ten Books To Know Me
Rules: 10 (non-ancient) books for people to get to know you better, or that you just really like.
Thanks @littledreamling for the tag! I wrote SO MUCH here hahaha. (And I snuck in a couple of series because c'mon we have to talk about complete stories in some cases, not just single books!)
Song in the Silence by Elizabeth Kerner. I read this the first time as a teenager and I saw so much of myself in Lanen. I loved that she's got such a maturity, still a young naive farmgirl in a lot of ways but experienced enough that she could have taken over running a decent-sized business if she'd stayed home. Confident enough that she could strike out into the world on her own, humble enough to find every new experience delightful or at least educational instead of humiliating. I looked back on this story a lot when I was realizing I was on the ace spectrum, because Lanen went into her big epic love story expecting to never have a physical aspect to it and choosing it wholeheartedly nonetheless.
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. Okay, the movie maybe more than the book, but mostly because I couldn't get my hands on the book for a number of years and the movie was readily available. I wanted to be a unicorn as a child, but since I couldn't transform into a one-horned horse, all I could do was follow the guidelines the movie set out. Such as "standing perfectly still". I practiced that. Sitting at my desk in the classroom. Standing in the lunch line. On the bus. It wasn't until after college, sitting around a conference room with my new co-workers, that I realized it makes people really uncomfortable if you just sit like a statue. I had to re-learn how to fidget.
A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Another case of me shaping my personality around a book character. Sara taught me that you didn't need to be royal or rich to treat people with kindness. The 1995 movie gave it a different ending and I can never decide which one I like best. I just love that I get to experience the story both ways.
Dragonsong by Anne McCaffrey. This is the book that officially introduced me to fantasy as a genre, instead of just trolling the library for books that sounded like they had magic in them. It's also very focused on music, which only made me love it more, and there's a scene that happens with Menolly that mirrored something I experienced in real life, so that was magical.
The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis. Yeah it's a religious metaphor. No I don't care. I read the series at a time when I needed something to believe in, and actually I was convinced that something was not the Christian God I'd been raised with. Puddleglum the marshwiggle taught me some important things about having faith (and that it didn't have to mean just faith in some nebulous god, though that was alright if it did…it could also mean faith in myself, faith in my friends, faith that the sun will rise tomorrow).
The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. I picked up the first book and read "the Aiel came over the Dragonwall in a flood" and a shiver went down my spine and I went to the book store and bought it with the little pocket money I had at the time. I dropped the series for a while in college when I didn't have access to new books, then picked it up again after meeting the author and being charmed by his kind personality. I have made so many amazing friends, both online and IRL, thanks to this series and it's a blessing to have a strong online community that's always there for me.
House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas. I swear, I was just looking for a romantasy book with a strong female lead and a bunch of sexy dudes and it turned into the most delightful set of characters with the most wholesome and heartbreaking ending. (I mean, the romance was good too but HOLY HELL the rest of the book!)
A Wrinkle in Time by by Madeleine L'Engle. The main character shares my name, how could I not love it? I also relate a lot to her…she's smart but that doesn't necessarily make her more mature than any other kid her age, she's akward, and she has a younger brother who she adores but he keeps showing her up LOL. Also probably my introduction to sci-fi, though I didn't know the term for it until years later.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. If you run in sci-fi circles, it's one of those things you either give in and read, or you pick up the references organically, because you will hear about it A LOT. I have fond memories of taking it on a road trip and reading it out loud to my friend while she drove…I'm not an entertainer but it's impossible NOT to read this book to someone without being entertaining. It was such a blast. Good, off-the-wall sci-fi fun.
The Wayfarers by Becky Chambers. Sci-fi can be tricky for me, but I picked up the first book and fell in love with the characters before I even knew what was happening. The books are only loosely connected, set in the same universe but with a mostly new cast each time, which is something that would normally really turn me off but something about these is just magical. Found family at its finest.
If you actually read all of this, you are my hero.

Total Reading Goal: 50
Just to be kind to my future self when she looks at this at the end of the year: remember that we were pregnant, had a baby, had to look for a new job, and had to move. We just didn't have time. Maybe we will next year.
Also I will admit I've been binge reading some of Tiffany Roberts' work here and there.

Ok this year's reading challenge was completely and utterly slashed. I got overly enthusiastic and just went all over the place. I enjoyed reading when I could, especially after having a baby. February through May was difficult for me as I was in a lot of pain and just wanted to sleep on the last few months of pregnancy. I cried a lot. After I gave birth, reading helped me slowly heal my new found scattered and tired mom brain. I started off slow and after August when I started working again, I came back with a vengeance.

The Best American Science Fiction & Fantasy 2022 edited by Rebecca Roanhorse (guest) & John Joseph Adams
Tumblr media
4 out of 5 stars.
This is a collection of twenty of the best science fiction and fantasy short stories published in North America during 2021 as selected by guest editor Rebecca Roanhorse, author of "Black Sun", among other books.
A Netgalley ARC provided courtesy of HarperCollins, the scheduled publication date is November 1, 2022.
Contents:
"10 Steps to a Whole New You" by Tonya Liburd "The Pizza Boy" by Meg Elison "If the Martians Have Magic" by P. Djeli Clark "Delete Your First Memory for Free" by Kel Colman "The Red Mother" by Elizabeth Bear "The Cold Calculations" by Aimee Ogden "The Captain and the Quartermaster" by C. L. Clark "Broad Dutty Water: A Sunken Story" by Nalo Hopkinson "I Was a Teenage Space Jockey" by Stephen Graham Jones "Let All the Children Boogie" by Sam J. Miller "Skinder's Veil" by Kelly Link "The Algorithm Will See You Now" by Justin C. Key "The Cloud Lake Unicorn" by Karen Russel "Proof by Induction" by Jose Pablo Iriarte "Colors of the Immortal Palette" by Caroline M. Yoachim "The Future Library" by Peng Shepherd "L'Esprit de L'Escalier" by Catherynne M. Valente "Tripping Through Time" by Rich Larson "The Frankly Impossible Weight of Han" by Maria Dong "Root Rot" by Fargo Tbakhi
A fantastic collection of stories with varying degrees of fantasy and science fiction woven within. The collection, in my opinion, tends to lean more towards fantasy or a mixture of the two rather than pure SF. A couple even have subtle touches of horror elements.
The main focus of all the stories is people, not hardware, not technology, and not magic, although all three do enter into the kickoff of many of the stories. People, as all really good SF and Fantasy should center on, their emotions, their reactions to what is happening, and their interpersonal relationships to others. Some of these stories touched me deeply, one made me cry, and all made me think.
In all honesty, I couldn't pick a favorite. In various ways they all had something important to say, many of them falling under the increasingly popular and widespread environmental science fiction subcategory. Would I recommend this collection and to whom? Yes, most definitely I would to all readers who like thought provoking fiction, no love or even experience with SFF required.

The Blizzard: Chapter 6
[Author's note: So, warning!~ There's death and violence, as well as Pokemon and Sonic the Hedgehog references. Furthermore, Dasher and Glimmer are not my original characters, nor is the event canon to the author's story. Please check out the story here to get the gist of what the characters are (although their segments are scattered) (Use google please I can't get the link to work!) https://archiveofourown.org/works/46657225/chapters/117504355]
My stuffed animals' POV
"Mooooooooooooooom!" Maleficent the Dragon shouted. "Great-Grandma sent us a story!"
"YAAAY! She's finally letting us read her stories!" Fennekin the Fox yelped.
"What? Let me see that." Charlotte the Tiger snatched the pages. "It's only one chapter!"
"No fair!" Jenny the Dog shouted.
"What's that note?" Conrad the Dragon pointed to the slip of paper.
T the Tiger swiped it before Drow could burn it. Spooky looked confused. "What's going on?" Spooky asked.
T read the note. "Dear children, you have been granted a late St. Patrick's Day present. Remember to be good and no leprechauns will pinch you! Love, A.M."
"What does - WAAIIT a minute. Are we supposed to read this?" Matcha guessed.
"If we are supposed to read it, then let's read the story!" Charlotte cheered.
"YAY!!!" Maleficent shouts. T sighed.
"Then let's get to it."
December 12
Emerald's POV
Emerald hissed through her teeth, the numbing her current anger  at her friend. It was her birthday, for the love of  Arceus! How did that unicorn possibly forget that today was his friend's birthday?! The argument he had wasn't even an argument at all! It was his excuse to go off and use his ill-used royal power to gain more magical and achieve immortality.
Emerald felt herself changing, but she didn't care. Ice shimmered in the air, practically BEGGING to be used as a weapon.
She grabbed those shards as the maid came in.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I'm sorry, EMERALD'S EVOLVING?" Mango asked as her sister dragged her into the security room/office.
"Yeah, and she's making ice." Kiui said.
"Well, I'm glad I'm a Mercat." Mango muttered.
Hikari burst into the room, saying, "I'm sorry, I just got the text and ran as fast as I could to see -"
"It's fiiiine. You're just in time to see our cousin's final form!" Kiui said, pulling up camera footage. Pft, kittens.
"What is she doing?" Mango wondered.
"Take a look, but don't look at the maid." Kiui warned.
"Why not?" Mango asked. Hikari took a look at the feed and gasped.
"She froze the maid!"
"What the - HOLY SALMON!"
Panic ensues as Kiui sighed, shaking her head in annoyance.
"Will you two stop panicking for five minutes? If Emerald's evolving like this, then she's becoming one of those Frosters." Sylvia barked on her end of the call. A glare was directed at the screen. "Okay, fine, one of the ice-type Pokemon. Happy?"
Mango mumbled an apology, while Hikari hissed, "How are you so calm about this? Emerald j-just - I don't know, encased a maid in ice!"
"I'm scared too, but I wanna see where this is going," Sylvia replied. "And your apology is accepted, Mango."
"If you ask me, I think little Emerald here is going to execute the rulers of that empire." Scylla piped up.
Merlina asked, "Why would you think that?"
"Because I did that, too."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emerald looked deeply into her ice statue's eyes, muttering, "Interesting." She strode into the hallway. "Now where's Dasher?" Her heels clicked as she stepped through room after room in the castle, even freezing the palace staff as she passed by.
At this point, no one would recognize Emerald as who she was before. Her eyes and hair were colored in different shades of icy blue, unlike the brown hair and eyes she had only several moments before. It was only a short period of time before almost a third of the castle was covered in ice, the temperatures were dropping every five seconds, and a huge blizzard was covering the city outside in ice and snow.
"Halt! Who are you, and what business do you have with the AAA -"  A guard was frozen near the dining room.
Emerald stepped into the room. "That was too easy. The fools are definitely planning something." She hissed angrily. Emerald was seething with rage, ready to go outside and worsen the snowstorm outside. For one, yī would not mess with an angry woman such as Emerald, but another wouldn't care.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"What did you mean by you did it too, Scylla?" Mango asked cautiously.
"Yeah, did you pull that off?" Kiui demanded, her cat ears pointing upwards in excitement.
"Kiui Banana Mochisolar, are you actually asking if our former clan leader pulled off whatever stunt Emerald  is doing?" Hikari sternly asked.
"Well, yeah! I wanna see if Cousin Emerald has a fighting chance!"
"What a town." Sylvia said sarcastically.
"Oh my - WHAT IN THE NAME OF ARCEUS IS -"
"While Merlina starts to rant, NO, I did not really pull it off, someone else did it for me." Scylla eventually replied as Merlina stared rambling about grounding her daughter for the next month.
Hikari gave a warning look to Kiui as she looked at the video. "Good news - or bad, I don't know - Emerald just froze half of the castle staff and the guards."
"Well, that explains why Merlina wants to ground her daughter." Sylvia remarked.
"I'm sooo going to tell everyone we meet how Emerald froze the castle." Kiui said in a smart-alec tone.
"Same, but it's going to be behind her -"
"OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!" Both children shouted, watching as Emerald chained the two rulers to the wall.
"They're dead...They're gonna be dead..." Mango stared at what was happening.
Kiui asked, "Can someone call an ambulance for those mother fluffers?"
"On it!"
"Don't encourage them, Scylla."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally. She found them. Now they are going to pay.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"AAAAMAAARIIIS!" Hikari shouted. "Your granddaughter is about to execute some royalty!"
"Suddenly, I miss going on a mission." Amaris yawned. Heh, werewolves. "What is this about someone -" She stopped as she saw the footage, dropping her cup of hot chocolate. "What in the name of Dark Gaia -"
"What's happening up there?" Helena shouted from downstairs.
"Nothing, hun. Just don't come up here." Amaris replied.
"Too late." Helena appeared in her spider form. "You know me better than that, dear. Now - HOLY GARCIA, HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?!"
"Evolution and anger, right here." Kiui said, donning sunglasses from out of nowhere.
"And ignore Aunt Merlina, she's mad at Cousin Emerald -"
"Demetria, actually. You missed the part where she changed her name."
"DANG IT!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Let us go! We'll give you whatever you want, just please don't hurt us!" Glimmer and Dasher continuously begged.
Emerald - no, Demetria - had held icicles against the skin of the unicorns' chins. Demetria smirked. "Do you know why we're at a standstill right now?"
"Obviously not, so I'll explain. You may have known me by the name Emerald, but I go by Demetria now. You have wronged me in many ways -"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mango and Kiui were eating popcorn as they watched intently, muttering to each other.
"What punishment do you think Demetria will give Dasher and Glimmer?" Kiui asked Mango.
Mango replied, "Well, knowing Demetria and how she's been using her powers, she could be planning a brutal and ice-cold death."
Kiui paled. "Then I'm glad that I'm not those two and I'm over here, otherwise I'd be screwed for life."
(P.S.: Spoiler Alert: Oh, Kiui, you were very, very, VERY wrong to be glad that you weren't there, because after this incident, Demetria does accidentally freeze people.)
Amaris finished processing what was going on as she finally muttered, "Holy crap, she's a powerful cyrokinetic."
Helena nudged Amaris, chuckling as she said, "Of course, dear. It just means Demetria is more powerful than others."
Merlina muttered, "That's not a good thing, especially for right now."
Sylvia said, "Well, that sucks for me, because I CAN FEEL MY NIECE'S ANGER FROM HERE!"
"OOOF, THAT SUCKS!" Kiui shouted, owning up to her title as the Annoying sister, earning herself a light slap from Hikari and a glare from Mango.
Hikari scolded, "Kiui Banana Mochisolar, you know better than that!"
The young Mercat grumbled, "I'm sorryyy."
"Your apology is accepted." Sylvia replied.
Scylla said, "Sorry to interrupt, but Demetria is done with her evil villain speech."
"HOLY -"
"ARCEUS, GIVE ME STRENGTH -"
"WOOHOO! -"
"LET'S GOO!"
"HECK YOU, SCYLLA -"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"And now, you shall be punished." Demetria finished, an evil glint in her eyes. Glimmer was the first to break the chains, creating a shield around the two unicorns.
"Save your energy, PESTS," Demetria growled. "You're only going to exhaust yourself." She used a large boost of energy to speed into and breaking the shield.
Hence causing her to pass out and create her downfall.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"NOOOOOOOOO!" Merlina, Mango, and Kiui shouted.
"Demetria, you HAD TO DO THAT -"
"To be fair, she just manifested -"
"I've got her." Scylla said, cutting off her connection to the call.
"Oooh boy. They're gonna be in a lot of trouble when they get back." Sylvia muttered as chaos ensues.
"That's it?" Maleficent shouted as her father checked for the other pages.
"Yeah, that seems to be it," Charlotte confirmed. "Now, where's Grandma?"
"Did you all enjoy the story? I worked vey hard on it." Creator said, leaning against the bedroom door.
"Yeah, and we want more! Where's the next chapter?" T said, raising a metaphorical eyebrow at her mother.
Creator broke into a nervous sweat. "Well, uh, you see -"
"Where is it, Creator?" Drow growled.
"IDON'THAVETHENEXTCHAPTERIT'SBEINGWRITTENBYYYYYYE!!!"

sanji is . arguably the most human of all the straw hats.. which is interesting bc he is also the only one who was supposed to be inhuman. ofc i think theyre all very human but sanji has the most moments where i can relate to him. the sanuso fic i was reading yesterday... he was so full of shame... and they wrote him hiding behind his hair.. and i felt so intensely SEEN by that. like oh my god he is ME i do all these things.. i find that my comfort characters are usually... ones who suffer a lot. i love suffering. in media.
SHREK SCREENSHOT..
"I WANT TO PUT THE SANJI FEEDING MICE AND THE CREW IS CONFUSED SCENE IN A FIC SO BAD BUT I HAVE WRITERS BLOCK ATM 😭" i will write it for u
"sanji vs. minnie mouse his hardest battle yet" oh my god........ ur mind...... wow...... genius...... crackship time (have u seen . oh wait ur not into jjk.. ok have u seen frollo x goofy... its insane...)

Tumblr media Tumblr media

IM TRYING MY BEST
Tumblr media
sharing my veteran knowledge
3 WAY QPR IS PERFECT
trace heatfist the magic man. skeazy magician and fuckboy
ace is VERY likeable idk a single person who doesnt like him. even my non one piece friend likes him but i think shes weak to his freckles
i trade memes like pokemon cards. i look forward to this symbiotic relationship
arent unicorns the national animal of scotland…(or ireland maybe…) THAT WOULD MAKE ME THINK THEYRE REAL
I COULD ONLY BEAT SOME GAMES a lot i didnt but usually bc i got out of the rhythm of playing them and left them unfinished. when i was younger i made my older brother play the hard parts for me a lot LMAO. ALSO DO YOU WANT MY FLIGHT RISING DRAGONS. IDK WHAT TO DO WITH THEM ALL MAN I DONT PLAY ANYMORE
i love that sanji is arguably the most emotional of the group (aside from franky or chopper, but for them its just played for laughs) and that overemotional/low self esteem part is exactly what makes him so relatable. i actually really appreciate that oda gave that trait to a male character. sanji cries a lot and is overemotional and kind of hysteric sometimes jdvbvfjdk so im glad they didnt make it like nami or robin who was like that stereotype. GOD I REALLY CONVERTED U TO SANJI TOWN DIDNT I. SORRY WE’RE ALL HERE BECAUSE WE HAVE LOW SELF ESTEEM AND PROJECT ONTO THE WEIRDO
*FROLLO X GOOFY????*
I HATE ADMITTING THAT I THINK HE’S HOT BC HE DOESNT DESERVE IT. BUT I DO. I THINK SANJI IS HOT. I DO. UNFORTUNATELY. in that maroon wano suit…ODA WHO TOLD YOU TO DO THAT!!!!!!!
and yes law too…listen. i have a big heart, ready to love, [possessed by sanji]
the little scarf/ascot is the gayest part
“"HE ALSO LOOKS SO SO PATHETIC 😭 SOPPING WET CAT OF A MAN" i LOVE how pathetic he looks. i like pathetic people so much.. like why are u like that.. making me pity u.. only in media tho never in real life 🙏🙏” exactly…PATHETIC FICTIONAL MEN GO HARD
I LOVE THE DOG ZORO SCREENSHOT HE LOOKS LIKE HES GONNA BITE SOMEBODY
AND USOPP KDSJNKJ I USE THAT ONE SO MUCH
i agree i like almost all of chopper’s other forms better than when hes a little baby 😭

Xanadu landscapes, beyond what's complex.
Xylophone rivers melodies in the air fly,
Planet of harmony, where music's flair.
 Chorus:
Oh, alphabet planets, oh so grand,
A vibrant cosmos, hand in hand.
With colors and shapes, they come alive,
Let's explore, let our imaginations thrive!
 Verse 25:
Planet in the shape of the letter Y,
Yellow big sunflowers, stretching up high.
Yonder mountains with snow on top, touching the sky,
Planet of sunshine, where happiness lies.
 Verse 26:
Planet in the shape of the letter Z,
Zephyr warm sweet smell, flying gently with ease.
Zen gardens, with rounded stones, - tranquil and serene,
Planet of peace, where harmony convene.
 Outro:
From A to Z, our adventure complete,
In a universe of wonder, where dreams can't be beat.
So let's repeat exploring, with hearts open wide,
Colorful planets, where imagination can't hide!

On So-Called "Feminist" Writers
So Sarah J. Maas is considered a feminist writer, huh?
Yeah, and I'm sure Andrea Dworkin was really a pro-sex-work/pro-trans feminist in disguise.
Tumblr media
For those who don't get sarcasm, here's a hint: Dworkin wasn't. SJM isn't a feminist, and Stephanie Meyer is really a man *snark*. Yes, I'm being an asshole, but the thing those three have in common is that they've pushed forth and promoted toxic femininity, and essentially set women back—Dworkin in particular.
I've already ranted about Andrea Dworkin being the prototypical man-hating feminist, so I'll leave that alone for this post.
I know I missed the SJM hate-train by a few years. I think had I found out about Rowan earlier when I was still trying to work on Silent Shadow back in 2013, I would have jumped on that bandwagon then.
Or probably not—there's a greater likelihood that I would have ignored it since after graduating in 2010, I could never find the time to work on Silent Shadow like I wanted. I was too focused on leveling up my coding skills and nurturing the beginnings of a now fruitful long-term relationship. In fact, it was in 2013 that I decided to lay Silent Shadow to rest—a decision that I realized earlier this year was a bad one and might have saved my mental health by giving me a creative outlet other than writing code.
Sarah J. Maas has what I've started to call the Anne McCaffrey syndrome—creating powerful women but nerfing them by needing men to complete their lives and save them—sorry to both ladies, relationships are two-way streets. Sometimes the man does the saving, sometimes the woman.
Basically, it's nerfing strong women by using their relationships. It's lazy writing and it's an unrealistic trope that should have died out years ago.
As much as I loved the Talent series and the Dragonriders of Pern, those were the first books on the chopping block when I had to lighten my treasure trove of books for the move. The concepts presented in both series were nice enough for 15-year-old me, but had worn flat by the time I was in my late 20s.
As far as protag likability, looking back on it, I think Anne McCaffrey suffered in that area as well. I didn't like how Lessa seemed argumentative at times for no reason, or Anghariad's (yes, another character named Rowan) "fit throwing" (the opening of Lady in the Tower—from Get Off the Unicorn).
Actually, the other thing that bugged me about Lessa was her relationship with F'lar—something I didn't catch when I was 15 but made me go "hold up" when I was in my late 20s.
The only female Anne McCaffrey protagonist I like—and she may not have been written by McCaffrey, but by Elizabeth Moon (who actually has military experience and you can definitely see it in the book)—and that was Sassinak.
Side-note: Sassinak struck me as a woman that could easily stand next to Kirk, Picard, or Sisko if she were in the Star Trek universe.
The biggest problem with Stephanie Meyer was promoting a relationship that by even the standards of the day when the books were published, was considered toxic and abusive—scratch that, that dynamic was considered toxic twenty years before Twilight came out.
The biggest problem I have with authors that are considered "feminist" like Maas is that they continue to push shitty gender stereotypes at a time when we as a society need to grow beyond what defines a woman's place or a man's place.
Comparing Sarah J. Maas with another YA author—Mercedes Lackey—who actually writes about strong women and doesn't nerf them in lazy ways. I ended up loving her books—at first, it was her almost scientific approach to the magical system of Velgarth. Then it became the introduction of gay characters at a time when there were very few in the media.
What Lackey did with Valdemar was basically take the good parts of America and put it in a fantasy setting where you have an incorruptible group of people who protect those good parts.
It's not a surprise that despite her short-comings, Mercedes Lackey has been an author that has stuck with me well into adulthood. Though honestly, Glen Cook and his approach to fantasy with The Black Company runs a very close second.

Soo I made a portrait of myself with the Wizarding World Portrait Maker. So under the cut, there will be an About Me: Hogwarts Edition. Note: I do not actually have freckles I forgot to remove the freckles when making my portrait. But the more I look at it the more I kinda like it
About Me: Hogwarts Edition
Name: Victoria Ademi
Date of birth: March 25th, 1995 Zodiac sign: Aries (Pig in the Chinese Zodiac)
House: Ravenclaw
Pureblood or Muggleborn: Muggleborn Wand: Laurelwood with a unicorn core 11 ¾" and quite bendy flexibility
Patronus: Dolphin
Magical pet: A Niffler named J-Seph (after J-Seph from the co-ed K-pop group KARD)
My best spell(s): Alohomora, Wingardium Leviosa, Revelio, Lumos, Nox, and Expelliarmus
The best potion maker Ravenclaw house had in a while.
Despite it being illegal she has a Niffler as a magical pet.
Loves to talk about muggle stuff with her pureblood wizard friends despite them being confused.
Especially about k-pop. I even put some songs on my phone. Some of my fellow Ravenclaws actually like it,
Knows facts about random things, like how the woodpecker's tongue is so long that it wraps around its skull.
Despite being afraid of heights I would definitely try out as a seeker for the Ravenclaw quidditch team
Would most definitely fall off the broom five minutes in
My favorite magical treats are chocolate frogs. acid pops and Bertie Botts Every Flavor Bean
