#Is this how you tag on tumblr seriously I dunno

Not to be rude or derailing your answer to the ask about the scorched earth post, but I do think quite genuinely that the site is becoming more openly hostile to its userbase, or at the very least its disabled userbase. While I’m not a fan of mobbing people’s personal blogs in targeted harassment campaigns, I think some people are also ignoring that staff blatantly said in a recent post that epileptic users would need to pay for ad-free to have their safety assured

I kind of don’t think that’s being ethical or user friendly, to me that sounds like they’re refusing to meet basic accessibility requests and answering with ‘pay us money to be safe’. Strobing and flashing ads aren’t just eyestraining, they can legitimately lead to serious injuries for epileptic folk, and telling people with epilepsy to just pay up or get lost is kinda… I dunno… disgusting?

So it looks like in a livestream (not on a post so far as I've been able to see) either photomatt or zingring made a glib and inappropriate response to an epileptic user asking about flashing ads and suggested that maybe they needed to pay for ad-free.

That's bad, I don't like it, and if it was supposed to be a joke it was a shitty one.

Zingring, tumblr's COO addressed that comment in a post where she said:

Buying ad-free (or gifting ad-free to someone else) is always an option, but that is not the solution (and of course, some folks simply can’t afford it). Sorry that it sounded dismissive in the session! That was not my intent.

I still think that's inappropriate (it's not that ad free isn't *the* solution, ad free shouldn't be *a* solution to accessibility), but it looks like Zingring has addressed this issue multiple times.

She got tagged in this post listing ways that tumblr could improve accessibility for photosensitive users and seems to have pretty consistently followed up; she has explained that there are rules against flashing ads that are sometimes violated by the advertisers and asks people to please report ads that break those rules so those advertisers can be blocked, has noted that there is apparently a "stop all autoplay" option in the works behind the scenes. She does also seem to take it seriously when users reach out with complaints about accessibility issues and seems to be willing to explore options.

Looking through that blog, this does not seem to be a site that is hostile to users with accessibility issues so much as, like everything else that's wrong around here, it is ridiculously understaffed so every project that someone wants to have as a priority is a project that someone else needs put on the backburner.

However, to very gently push back: how much of what you're experiencing as hostility from tumblr is actual hostility and how much of it is seeing posts like this, which suggests that tumblr is removing accessibility features because the lightbox didn't have double-tap-to-zoom on mobile for some users for a short while, claims that the blocking/flagging issue is a false flag against trans women, shared the inaccurate fearmongering post about tumblr live's ToS, and also claimed that tumblr "allowed" flashing ads that violated the in-place rules that tumblr has for advertising?

(this kind of goes with the 'nobody understands the ToS' but also nobody understands ads; tumblr does not have enough staff to look over the ads that go on their site every day, no social media company does, they rely on advertiser agreements as a sort of enhanced honor system and reports from users if the advertisers don't hold up their end of the bargain; the only way around this for any site that uses ads is to not have ads and that post is explicitly saying don't pay for tumblr because they are doing ads wrong - either they have to run ads and some bad ones are going to slip through and users will have to report them or tumblr will have to be 100% paid by the users or tumblr will go away. If you see ads that are unsafe for photosensitive users on *any* website you should report them to the site because the site almost certainly doesn't know that there's an advertiser violating the ad ToS unless someone tells them)

Generally speaking, I am actually *not* seeing worsening accessibility features, I'm seeing improvements compared to where we were five years ago - alt text on images is now built-in and devs are working hard on making tumblr more compatible with screen readers (as noted in the changes blog regularly); tumblr itself started offering different dashboard themes for users after years of complaints about contrast levels and readability; the "tiktok/twitterified" desktop dash view that everyone hates is supposed to be more readable on wider screens.

Compare this post in October of 2022 when Changes celebrated adding animations for posting (and told users those could only be disabled at an OS or browser level) with this post from July 2023 when they rolled back a feature because of an unexpected use case that could cause problems for photosensitive users.

These aren't things that I'd expect to see from a company that didn't care about accessibility, or that was openly hostile to questions around making the site more accessible.

I don't disagree with you that the comment from the stream about buying ad free was inappropriate; it absolutely was and it must have made photosensitive users feel like shit. But in the three months since that comment tumblr has been very responsive about getting flashing ads removed as soon as possible and seems to be working on more permanent fixes. I think this may be an instance of able-bodied people not realizing how shitty and dehumanizing their joke was (and it was) and taking the steps to do better.

If you don't think they're doing better, I probably can't convince you. I certainly don't think that tumblr is perfect about accessibility and I think that users need to continue pushing for improved user control of how the site displays and interacts with various devices. But compared to the kind of responses users complaints got from staff in 2018? I feel like things have improved a lot.

Like I said: normally I would just remove odd, uncomfortable, or even outright rude messages without making a whole thing of it. I curate my own online experience and I try my best to live by that rule.

However, I've now gotten multiple unsolicited DMs over the course of a couple of months expressing the exact same sentiment (and nearly word-for-word as this ask, so I highly suspect I already know who you are). I have duly ignored or glossed over them hoping that the person/people would take the hint to simply stop engaging with the same message over and over again. But an anon ask is my last straw, I guess.

So if you are the same person as in my DMs, I'm finally giving you a response (and if you're not the same person – which I highly doubt – then I'm speaking to both of you).

Firstly, I want to say that I am sorry that your worldview is so limited that this is your stance and feelings on gay/queer ship content for Sebastian and Ominis.

Next, I ask that you please:

Don't make your homophobia anyone else's issue but your own. Don't come into DMs/ask inboxes/comments to make your discomfort with the content I create my problem. I don't know what you hoped to accomplish by sending this message but it's unlikely that you'll find the same feelings or sympathy from the person who is actively creating queer/sebinis content.

Curate your own online experience. Once again, do not make your content consumption anyone else's problem but your own. The "unfollow" button is there. Tumblr has a tag filtering system and I try to tag my art and content as accurately as possible. If you do not like something/it makes you uncomfortable, then do not continue to consume it. And if you still decide to stick around for whatever reason, then please keep your thoughts/opinions on this matter to yourself because I can promise that I don't actually care why you would continue to be here and looking at my art if it makes you unhappy.

Widen your worldview and try to reframe your perspective. Consider that Sebastian x Ominis is just as canon as Sebastian x f!MC or Ominis x f!MC. As much as we like to ship our various MCs with the canon characters, MC never actually amounts to canonically being confirmed as anything but being just friends with everyone. Using the "they are just best friends" / "why can't they just be portrayed only as friends" could literally be applied to just about any other non-canon/non-confirmed ship between friends regardless of gender. If even one of them, Ominis or Sebastian, was portrayed as cis female in canon, I would suspect that you would better "understand" why a ship between these two "friends" may exist. Then also consider a cis male MC; it's possible you may suddenly reframe all the interactions between Ominis x m!MC or Sebastian x m!MC in your head to be "totally platonic/friendly". Your issue is certainly not with their canon relationship vs. fandom portrayal (but I think we both know that).

Educate yourself. Go outside and meet and talk to people, I dunno. It is 2024 my dude. I don't even know how you're on Tumblr – the most queer-friendly social media site – with those kind of narrowed views and stigma.

I would like to finish by saying: I don't wish you the best. What I do wish is for you to learn, grow, and be better than this.

And also please stop sending me messages of this nature, because the next ask or DM I get like this, we're moving on to blocking at this point. And if your purpose was to get me to stop, I can tell you that these messages have only fueled the explicit sebinis smut maker in me. 😤

2. the specific contents of theories isn't the only thing that makes them conspiratorial. it's about the way they're argued.

Actually, I am thinking of One Specific Event from about a year and a half ago that was treated as people "spoiling the party" when in fact it was an example of good faith engagement with a seriously worded discussion post.* Maybe you missed that, and it's not like it's a super common occurrence. But in hindsight, I don't find it surprising given the climate here.

*I can provide more details on this specific thing in DMs if someone is curious. I don't wanna hash it out on main, especially since I was only peripherally involved.

4. This isn't about whether tumblr is your space to have fandom fun – I do assume that. It's about whether someone is making arguments in jest or if they mean them seriously. Both of these things might be fun to someone (but maybe I could have worded that point better in the original tags).

5. No, no fake kids, and this fandom isn't plagued by a central figure who's to blame for all the "bad stuff". Plus, it's "decentralized", so no singular entity is controlling some super specific narrative. This definitely keeps the space in check. That's part of it though: it's all very sociological, which makes my issue difficult to address because most single posts aren't a problem in of themselves, but there's a tangible vibe to the whole thing. That's also why I want to tread lightly here; I know a lot of it is a joke, but it's hard to tell what isn't. Like, yeah, I've been passive-aggressive lately, but I've also been watching this for a long time. And I regularly see things I perceive as a strawman against my position as well as absolutist rhetoric, which reads just as much as picking a fight as any of my recent posts do. If you talk about there only being "one explanation" for something, what is that, other than putting forward your theory as true? Is it really Not Serious? Every time? Even when the post is presented in a serious way, with sources and evidence? People on this site talk about what they expect Mark Lewisohn to include in his Definitely Trying To Be Serious And Factful biography series. Those demands are never serious? And I don't want to just ruin people's fun for no reason! But I also have a hard time dismissing every single thing that Sounds Kind Of Serious as Probably A Joke (and I do do it, pretty regularly) And I semi-often see people doing things that set off my alarm bells, even when they are not proclaiming Stella McCartney to be a lifelong actress. (reminder that several people on here freaked about the For Paul tapes story being semi-debunked last November; like actively scorned people who were trying to figure out how that story came about and where it originated. That's not normal, sorry to say! And, funnily enough, about a year ago, there was a blog on here pushing a very very very esotheric version of McLennon [and even trying to monetize it] and while most people dismissed them for the kook they were, they splashed onto the tumblr scene in an identical way [saying something that amounted to: "how dare you imply this apocryphal Paul McCartney quote might be fake?"] –––– so my question is: is it not that serious? I Don't Know You Tell Me!)

6. This is @ me mostly, I guess. I just feel like this space has become more and more of a monoculture. Shipping is the default angle with which everything is approached. If John and Paul write songs that are maybe not about each other that's not often seen as worth diving into. (See: Beautiful Boy tinhatting). I actually want to try and change this; get more diverse content on this site, but I guess I assume it's not welcome, which is on me, really. I have slides explaining my specific reading of Double Fantasy (yes, seriously) and there isn't really much stopping me from posting them, outside the fact that most people on here seem to have a very different relationship to the songs from the album than I do, so I assume they won't care. But y'know, I'll try to just Make More Content and see what that does. (For the record I know that sounds whiny. And I do seriously want to do better on that front)

No. Somehow we decided Yassified Mrs. Tweedy from Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget has real dom energy and her next conquest would be El Pollero himself, Gus Fring - if only he wasn't gay! El Pollero is Mrs. Tweedy's impossible dream! In fact, once he finds out about the chicken collars, he might try to seduce "what's-his-nuts, in the chicken suit" away from her. "Mr. Tweedy II," I ad-libbed, (It's Dr. Fry but I had to look it up.) "has it never occurred to you to to sell these happiness collars to people?" And then, in a goofier voice, "But they're chicken collars, they're to make chickens happy..."

And the spouse says, "I don't know how to make people happy!"

After some discussion, I admitted, "The one I really wanna do is Bartleby the Scrivener as a Seinfeld episode... And maybe in the B-plot Kramer does The Tell-Tale Heart."

"Wait, is Kramer the killer or the victim?"

"The killer? I dunno, we need him for the next episode..."

Anyway, we decided Kramer gets a Furby and he's taking it everywhere and Newman's real annoyed with it, but he needs to sneak into Kramer's room while he's sleeping and steal it without setting it off. A cursory internet search suggests that Furbies and Seinfeld did share a brief moment on this planet, so this would've been one of the last episodes, perhaps a lost finale. ...In which case I would be free to kill whoever I like!

But, okay. I'm done with my next six-pack and I'm not going to publish it until I can illustrate. My eyes are putting me on indefinite hiatus. But I can write! So, if I get real bored... And I'm not saying I will, 'cos I got a lot of eye exercises to do and ATM they get me real tired and useless. But IF I get real bored, and if this poll strays across your dash, and you decide to care, do you wanna see:

Grunge

I'm usually chill when I use English, but I kinda messed up this time… Sorry about that.

So, this post is basically a translation of the Korean post you can find in this link.

Initially, I was all calm and composed while translating, but in the end, I couldn't keep it together.

If Urasawa offed Grimmer in the story because their chemistry was just too good to handle? Maybe Urasawa didn't know what to do with them. Like, imagine if everything got resolved and Grimmer survived; they'd totally grab that beer they promised each other, right? And they'd probably realize how similar their pasts and issues are, becoming BFFs in no time with a "You too? Same here." kinda vibe.

So what would be next for them? Runge would ditch the BKA and tag along with Grimmer on his globetrotting adventures, right? Picture Grimmer, slinging a huge bag over his shoulder, turning to Runge (who's rocking some comfy casual wear instead of his usual suit) and asking, "You ready?"

This could've been the ultimate queer ending, so I can't help but suspect that Urasawa was like, "Nope, can't let that happen," and had Grimmer bite the dust. I've been ranting about this to my fellow Monster-loving friends since last year, and now that we're halfway through 2023, I'm still going strong, even translating this into English and posting it on Tumblr. It's just… my heart is so heavy…

I kinda feel like Urasawa is way too into preserving the hetero norm and the whole family thing, which rubs me the wrong way… Sure, it was nice to see Runge regain his humanity and reconnect with his daughter, but taking Grimmer away from him was just cruel. What's so wrong with Heinrich Runge starting fresh with another man? It's like Runge's boyfriend got stolen by the Creator himself… snatched away as soon as they met… How am I supposed to deal with that? I know, of course, that there's a reason why Grimmer was died, and I know that it's the same reason why Johan's real name wasn't revealed… But still, that's not enough…

My inner overinvested otaku is seriously losing its mind over this.

But seriously, if Grimmer had lived and been with Runge, he might've actually gotten his name back… I have no doubt Runge would've played a huge part in helping Grimmer find his true name…

And can I talk about how hilarious it is that Runge was one of the people begging Vardemann to prove Grimmer's innocence in Another Monster? It makes sense for Tenma and Suk, but Runge too? Is it funny or just… I dunno, when I read that part, I couldn't help but think that Runge had some low-key love for Grimmer and held out hope for him. Why else would he care so much about someone he only knew for a day or two?

As someone kinda similar to Runge (which sounds weird, I know), I'm pretty sure he fell hard for Grimmer at first sight. Runge might've seemed chill around Grimmer in Ruhenheim, but deep down, he was shook and amazed. Like, "There's actually someone like this out there?" But it wouldn't have been easy for Runge to acknowledge those feelings, and he might not even have realized it. So he played it cool and treated Grimmer like usual, all the while being super drawn to him. Basically, Runge fell head over heels for Grimmer right away and found a glimmer of hope. If I had to put that hope into words, it'd be: Maybe with this person, I could discover something totally different from everything I've experienced so far.

Yeah, that's the kind of faint yet powerful hope…

But the cold, uncaring Creator… that heartless Creator ripped Grimmer away from Runge…

I mean, honestly, you can just bop on through my masterlist, so much of it is fluff and happy endings. I don't think there's any one that's like the happiest.

I have gotten but one anon hate. They didn't specify what they were hating on, but I got it after I posted these graveyard sex headcanons so I think it was probably about that.

My process is such that this just doesn't work for me. So even when I'm doing multi chapter fics, they're already finished when I start posting them. So anything I don't finish or ever go back to will only be sitting in my files on my computer and no one will know about it but me...

I like to think I'm pretty good at dialogue? I dunno, it's hard to judge myself. Ask me when I'm in the middle of it and I'll tell you there are no strengths lol.

Right, um. Hi, I post literally whatever comes to mind, which is mostly random polls and thoughts on stuff. I do post thoughts and bad art about stuff, but not usually. Call me minute, I guess that works. I go by she/her.

To be 100 percent clear, no racism, sexism, queerphobia, extremism, etc. I support LGBTQ+ communities, all that fun stuff. Also, no sexual crap on here, please. If you're into that, okay, just don't be on here because I'm not. (Seriously, do NOT interact at ALL if that kinda stuff is what’s on your blog, please and thank you.)

I'm essentially fine with whatever you believe in, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone physically, mentally or emotionally. If you're shoving your opinion down my or someone else's throat, get out please.

Okay, moving on, I dunno how to do this, so bear with me here.

why is general eduction such a thing.

seriously, I was forced through a bunch of this stuff in high school already. I'm really tired of having to learn a bunch of random trivia when I'm already dead set on going into mathematics academia. I mean, like, one of my gen eds was on roman culture and it's nice and all that I know some half-remembered trivia about ancient rome now but I would have preferred to have spent that time learning some model theory or something

I mean seriously [most american colleges] what purpose does making every single one of your students have to bRoAdEn ThEiR hOrIzOnS serve? I get that a lot of students might not know what they want to do and might want to shop around but it really sucks to be someone who knows what you want to do dragged around through all this random stuff you don't care about, and there should really be a process by which students like this can, like, opt out somehow if they demonstrate they have good reason.

Nota bene: I'm taking a literary analysis course to satisfy a writing requirement. I'm not going to write literary analysis papers when I do the things I had to satisfy this requirement to be allowed into (ie, trying to get a master's); it's literally irrelevant to what I'm doing. Do you know how much I, a mathematics student, need to be able to analyze poetry in order to do mathematics??? I've read Winning Ways, and even THAT doesn't require you to bust out your tinfoil hat to synthesize complete bs extract subtly hidden metaphor from deep in the subtext.

Social media is so stressful especially when you accidentally find out someone you've not really interacts with (other than commenting on their fics on another site) blocked you and you're like 97% sure it's just because you post waaaay too much but also of course I'm going to overthink things.

It's amazingly useful but also, it only affects your user experience and nothing else!

Like seriously, let's say you don't want to consume a person's content cause they, create AI art for example (using this example cause it's common-ish and I've been open in the past of my opinion about AI art), but they're content gets re-blogged by other users who you do enjoy, a mute button would make it so you didn't see that content and you could just forget about the whole thing? Especially cause tagging is inconsistent and understandably so because fast-re-blogs keep the site alive.

I dunno, I just think sites need more options for users to control their experience.

something i appreciate about this site is how often i see friends, mutuals and strangers salivating over the most Some Guy looking people i’ve ever seen. i think it’s actually good for your psyche to see people carnally desire people that you would not even think twice about. it’s good for the self esteem, a good reminder that for every random ass person on the world there is a subset of people that wants to do unspeakable things to them

I'll admit I was so confused during the scene where Demiurge was fighting to get Tuare on his farm having not read the LNs or Manga and forced to go right into the show. Chaos in the Woods

back from my unintentional break! this fic has better grammar, so maybe y'all might like this better + im supposed to get my ao3 invite on 09/10/11 so you might find my fics there soon

Desc: The Wellmet trio have a chaotic day in the woods.

It was a hot day in the woods. Conn, Embre, and Rowan decided to visit the woods near Wellmet. Benet and Kernn tagged along to make sure they were safe.

They were doing the typical stuff such as rambling on about whatever crossed their minds. Then Rowan jokingly dared him.

"Conn, eat this leaf. She handed him a leaf that had fallen off one of the trees nearby.

"Sure." Conn ate the leaf without any hesitation. "Tastes better than palace food." He calmly informed them.

"YOU ACTUALLY ATE IT?" Rowan exclaimed.

"Yeah?"

"Cousin, what made you think that was a good idea?" Embre sarcastically asked him.

"Well," Conn started, "she did tell me to eat one!"

"That was a joke! I didn't actually want you to eat it like it was the most delicious thing you ever ate!" She slightly scolded him.

There was a rustling coming from behind them. Benet came from the tall trees that were surrounding them.

"What's going on here?" Benet questioned them. He eyed all of them, attempting to identify the culprit of squabbling so noisily.

"Nothing," Rowan answered for the others, "just talking." She glared at Embre and Conn, and they both stayed quiet.

"Alright guys, clearly we have to be quieter, so they don't hear us and come to check on us again. Understand?" Rowan lectured them.

"Yes, Lady Rowan." Embre teased her.

"Stop that!" She irritably told him. Her cheeks brightened with a soft red glow.

All while this was happening, Conn thought about how good of friends the two have become, so quickly too.

"So, Conn, do want more leaves?" She asked, half joking when she said it.

"Why not?"

They started to look for different species of trees, so Conn could at least have some variety in his new leaf-snack.

Conn spotted something in the grass. It seemed to be a wrapper of sorts. He decided to call Rowan and Embre.

"Look what I found!" He held it the air as they came towards him. As they came closer and closer, they could feel curiosity bubbling inside of them.

"What's that supposed to be?" Embre asked him.

"I dunno, I'll read it now." He brought it closer to his eyes. It read 'TROJAN', in white text on a blue background. He turned it on its side. His eyes instantly snapped to a white box filled with text. '…prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS…' Oh. Now he knew what it was. A condom wrapper. It's not like he knew what one looked, it was just obvious what it was now.

"What is it?" Rowan asked Conn, not yet aware of what it was.

"It's a condom wrapper Ro." Conn told her, unsure of both her and Embre's reaction, and if they'll be upset or not.

"Let me see that." Rowan took the wrapper out of his hands and began to inspect it for herself. After noticing the same thing Conn did, she gave it back.

"So, it is a condom wrapper." Rowan concluded for herself. At last, it was Embre's turn to look at it. No one except for Conn. But now that Rowan had seen it, it would be rude to not show it to him.

"Hm. What should we do with it?" Embre wondered out loud. It was a good question, to be honest. What were they supposed to do, throw it away like it was nothing? Conn then blurted out something absurd.

"Hear me out," he sighed, expecting a negative reaction, "Let's find someone and ask if its theirs." He closed his mouth, ready for whatever was going to happen.

"No! That's a horrid idea! What if people think it's ours?" Rowan exclaimed, very obviously disagreeing with Conn.

"I doubt that people would think young people would use protection." He honestly told her.

"Still!" It's too weird and suspicious to do a thing like that!" She retorted, visibly getting upset.

"What's that?" Conn said. The rustling came back. Benet or Kernn had to be coming because of how loud they were. Conn hid the wrapper under his arm so no one could see it."

Kernn came this time, looking somewhat tired. "What are you doing?" She asked them, using a tone that sounded like she was saying a sentence.

"We're just," Conn took a quick pause to come up with something, "having a fun game of truth or dare!" He said, feeling a bitter taste in his mouth from lying.

"I'll be watching you." She spoke, having some more edge in her voice. She left them be and returned to Benet.

"Okay, we really have to quiet down, or they're going to catch us again." Rowan told them. There was no use in her words however, since they both got the hint as soon as Kernn came to check on them.

"So now what?" Conn wondered out loud. It was in their heads too. Now, they were back on square one.

"Why don't we just let it blow in the air?" Embre suggested to them.

"That's a good idea to me." Conn said, shortly before he released the hidden wrapper from under his arm.

It soon blew in the air as if it was a candy wrapper of some sort, until it was no longer visible. The sun had lowered quite a bit.

"Imagine if some kid found that." Embre cackled.

"We do not need to think about that." Rowan told him, chuckling lightly under her breath.

The rustling started again. This time, both Benet and Kernn came to see them.

"We're leaving. It's getting dark." Benet grumbled. They came with them and went to the edge of the forest, back into Wellmet. Kernn and Benet were successfully hiding their smirks the whole way there
