Rochi: there are literally 19 fics for this ship, all but 3 written by the same person, and the characters have never even been mentioned in the same sentence, let alone met. neither of them have any lines, we don't know what one looks like and we only know he exists because of like 2 fact files you can find scattered around the game. but holy shit if the dynamic ive deluded myself into thinking they have isnt DELECTABLE

The whole idea was because people realized Boba and Cal are about the same age and Boba is a bounty hunter and Cal is someone who would probably be wanted by a bunch of people

Friday Fic Recs

It's ship time! Specifically some Jango Fett/Obi-Wan Kenobi fics. As is usual for me I've kept to fics without active Jedi-bashing. With that out of the way, these are all Jangobi canon-adjacent AU one shots with less than 5k words.

Mandalorians are Selkies AU! Mandalorians are Selkies AU! I loved this one so much! Jango is a delight and I love the domesticity! Obi-Wan stays a Jedi! I absolutely love that Jango winds up Jedi-adjacent. I don't think I've seen it much if at all outside this fic and honestly, after reading this, I think it should happen more. They seem so genuinely happy and at peace by the end I love it!

In a galaxy where you crave whatever your soulmate eats, Obi-Wan has long gotten accustomed to the taste of spicy food. Soulmates AU! This one is really cute! I enjoyed the little detective work Obi-Wan does to find Jango. Jango's hatred of shig is fun and their first meeting is delightful. It made me smile!

Canon Divergence AU! Obi-Wan's padawanship didn't work out but he's still a Jedi. He's on Mandalore teaching and winds up having a one night stand with the parent of one of his students. This one is so much fun! I absolutely adore Jango's squad of wingmen trying their best to get Jango and Obi-Wan to go out on an actual date. The concept amuses me and the execution amuses me more. Boba is a delight! This is a really sweet fic!

"Are they fighting again?"

She scratched her neck with her nails, as if pondering the question. Then with a terribly fake expression of horror, she shuddered.

"Worse, they are kissing."

Cal Kestis and why people say he's a "flat" character

Alright so.... months? ago I mentioned to @ironhoshi I had thoughts on Cal's character development in Fallen Order and I meant to share then in an original post instead of response.

So a lot of people, gamers in particular, tend to comment that they did not care for Cal as a protagonist because he came across as "flat" to them. A sentiment I don't agree with but I can kind of see how other people got there being a long time gamer myself.

I think this "Flat Cal" feeling is a result of expectations vs. reality people had for Jedi Fallen Order. Particularly when it comes to Power Fantasies and Survivor Fantasies.

Videogames often play into the Power Fantasy trope, especially Dark Souls- like games as JFO was marketed. The appeal of starting off weak and vulnerable and through time, effort, and skill turning into a powerful badass. Cal certainly does start off weak and grows into more power but the game's narrative as well as Cal's character development only briefly play into it.

When you consider it, Cal beats very few of the narrative Big Bads by himself. Merrin helps him with Malicos, the Shyyyo Bird with Ninth Sister, Cere initially rescues him Second Sister | Trilla, Vader kills Trilla, and Cere and Cal work together in the end to escape Vader. Aside from Ninth Sister, there aren't many narrative beats highlighting Cal's rising power in a way that leans into the Power Fantasy trope.

Notably, even the Ninth Sister scene gets dismantled from the Power Fantasy trope. Cal brags about how he defeated the Ninth Sister. Yet instead of praise for taking down a difficult opponent, Cere cautions Cal. She's happy he is growing stronger and more confident in himself but she cautions him against arrogance. A warning Cal later acknowledges as right of Cere to make. Cal learns to embrace humility instead of arrogance or overconfidence. His swagger is tempered. He defeats the illusion of Master Tapal not by fighting but by accepting the past.

Honestly, JFO pretty much dismantles the Power Fantasy trope.

Another trope people expected of JFO was a Survivor Fantasy (which I find very ironic now that the JFO sequel has been titled Survivor). In particular, a Lone Survivor Power Fantasy. The type of trope you see in the Lara Croft reboot and the zombie post apocalyspe horror genre (such as Last of Us and The Walking Dead). The idea of a character starting off weak and isolated and is forced to grow stronger and "harden" themselves so that rise above all the adversity trying to kill them (nature or man or even society).

Again, there's definitely a similar basis for this trope in JFO. Cal is one of a few survivors from Order 66, a survivor that is targeted and hunted. A perfect set up for the trope. Except JFO chooses to explore Trauma Recovery instead. JFO is a story of healing both the self and community. It's why Cal starts off brash and threantening to cut down Merrin to handing over his lightsaber to her and Merrin choosing to aide Cal as a result. It's why seeing all the damage on Kashyyyk pains Cal and how the planet hasn't been completely ravaged gives Cal hope. It's why Cal's flashback to his master result in him moving forward instead of letting the past define him. It's why Cere and Cal go through a bumpy mentor-and-mentee relationship resulting in both of them finding the willpower to stand up and fight for what's right. Why the fight against Vader ends with Cere on the brink of giving into the dark side of the Force again and Cal reminding her she has a choice. JFO is about trauma recovery and the importance of community in that recovery process. That one does not need to and should not do things alone.

In a sense JFO is also dismantling the the Lone Survivor Trope the same way it dismantles the Power Fantasy. Of course this dismantling of tropes instead of playing into them, as many videogames do, results in people feeling disatisfied. Gameplay and premise wise, the basis is there but it isn't explored narratively. So Cal comes across as flat because his character didn't develop the way people expected him to.

In reality, Cal's character development and growth is explored through acts of kindness, empathy, and forgiveness. It's about ending self-isolation, running and hiding from your problems, in order to heal and move forward. Cal's story in JFO is about picking himself up and then offering a hand to the next downed person he sees because it's easier to get up with help.

Cal isn't flat. He simply isn't a typical videogame protagonist.

MOST HITS: very unsurprising but also still surprising because I never thought it would get that big but it's my fic from every height I’d fall I’d call a DC|Batfam fic with fucked up time wibbly wobbly reincarnation and slow build

MOST KUDOS: VERY surprising because i basically never check my stats page and didnt notice this fic sneak itself that high (except yknow. every height) but its bathroom break or a statistically unlikely number of kids stacked into a bathroom which is my DC|Batkids comedy crack fic and a take on the Wayne GalaTM trope

MOST COMMENTS: ... huh well I do get a decent amount of comments tbh but this one did surprise me a lot. it's (after every height) i’ll scream, but you won’t hear - ‘forget me not’  which is the third part in a series featuring an amnesiac Witcher AU - as in yes most of the characters forgot Jaskier the Bard has ever existed. it is VERY angst and mind the tags but i have since abandoned the series, though the first part can be read without reading the series if you dont mind a sad ending

MOST BOOKMARKS: in first... AFTER every height and bathroom break are at the moment two fics tied at 149 bookmarks the first one is in wonderment, at you and yours which is a Witcher fic with Geralt/Jaskier, 6k words of smut and strength kink the second is dragonology a DC|Batfam fic where Tim after getting injured and his body going "nope ive had enough" finds out that he's actually a dragon shifter

MOST WORDS: i don't think i can actually get around explicitly mentioning every height here since it is my longest fic and getting longer with atm 60k, second in line is we'll all be the weak and the weary sometime a rare pair Witcher fic with Regis/Roche - yes the vampire Regis and yes Vernon Roche of the Blue Stripes from TW2 and TW3, it's got 17k and is a short developing relationship fic and with the best meet ugly ive written so far

LEAST WORDS: .................................. do I. do I have to. really? ughhhhhh okay I'll link it if ONLY for baby Cas who was very proud of it - anyway comfort a Yuri on Ice fluff Yuuri/Viktor piece that I wrote when I was like. what? 16? pls keep that in mind if you do read it but my advice is. don't xDDD

You see this a lot in Star Wars now, especially fics with mandalorian in it. It's established that Mando'a is very gender neutral. And so, when writing interactions with mandalorians, gender information would never be conveyed except deliberately. And so it is often given out in introductions.

What is often missed is that gender information does not need to be conveyed at all. It's superfluous information. For a language to have no gender markers in ordinary speech is for the culture of the language to not put significance in gender itself.

A mandalorian speaking to another mandalorian would not have bothered to find out or convey gender information, because it is about as relevant as knowing that the other has curly hair under their helmet or conveying their own hair color. It might be necessary in some context, like medical information. It would make more sense if it is treated like medical information. You don't need to know.

And jedi would never make that mistake. Jedi are raised to be as diplomatic and sensitive to various cultures in the galaxy. They might have gender according to their personal culture. But even as jedi to jedi interaction might run the full gamut of all the genders in the galaxy, they would know that it holds no importance to a mandalorian.

It would have only been,

“Jaster Mereel,”

“Jedi Knight Feemor,”

Because one side is agender, and the other side will always be incredibly respectful of the cultures they interact with.

Jaster Mereel would not have given a single thought about what the gender of the person he's talking to. Jedi Knight Feemor would have adjusted to match.
