The benefits of mindfulness in the criminal justice system
Introduction
Mindfulness is a relatively new concept in the criminal justice system, but it has been gaining traction in recent years. It is a way of using meditation and other mental exercises to increase focus and awareness of one's thoughts, feelings, and environment. It can help reduce stress, anxiety, and even aggression. Mindfulness has been used in prisons, courts, and police departments in an effort to reduce recidivism rates, improve the mental health of inmates, and create a more peaceful atmosphere in the criminal justice system.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is a practice of being present in the moment and aware of one's thoughts, feelings, and environment. It is based on the idea that by being present and aware, one can gain clarity, reduce stress, and cultivate a sense of calm. Mindfulness is usually practiced through meditation, breathing exercises, and other mental exercises. It has become increasingly popular in the criminal justice system as a way to reduce recidivism rates, improve the mental health of inmates, and create a more peaceful atmosphere.
Benefits of Mindfulness
The benefits of mindfulness in the criminal justice system are numerous. It can help reduce stress and anxiety in inmates, as well as increase their focus and awareness. Mindfulness can also help inmates learn to cope with difficult emotions, such as anger and fear, in a healthy way.
Mindfulness can also help reduce recidivism rates. Studies have found that inmates who practice mindfulness are less likely to reoffend than those who do not. This is likely due to the fact that mindfulness can help inmates develop a greater sense of self-awareness and self-control, which can lead to better decision-making.
In addition, mindfulness can help create a more peaceful atmosphere in the criminal justice system. By reducing stress, anxiety, and aggression, mindfulness can help create an environment that is more conducive to rehabilitation and healing.
Mindfulness in Practice
Mindfulness is being practiced in prisons, courts, and police departments across the country. In prisons, mindfulness practices are typically incorporated into group therapy sessions and individual counseling sessions. In courts, mindfulness can be used to help reduce stress and anxiety in those who are waiting for their case to be heard. In police departments, mindfulness can be used to help officers manage stress and stay focused on their duties.
Conclusion
Mindfulness has become increasingly popular in the criminal justice system in recent years. The benefits of mindfulness in the criminal justice system are numerous, and its practice is becoming more widespread as its effectiveness is realized.

Nature & Wellbeing
Nature And Wellbeing
Nature is good for our wellbeing in terms of both our physical and mental health and there are lots of studies that have been carried out which support this. It has been proven that there is a strong connection between health and exposure to nature. And even if you don’t live in the countryside, parks and open spaces have been key elements of towns and cities for many years. It’s true that being surrounded by trees and plants can make us feel better and can make us more creative and productive.
 The Wildlife Trusts Campaign
The Wildlife Trusts for example developed a mass engagement campaign, named 30 Days Wild where people were asked to engage with nature every day for a month. Amazingly 12,400 people signed up online with an estimated 18,500 taking part overall, resulting in an approximately 300,000 engagements with nature by participants. Samples of those taking part were found to have sustained increases in happiness, health, connection to nature and pro-nature behaviours.
 Benefits Of Nature
 ·         Better air quality
·         Reduction in cortisol (the stress hormone)
·         More physical activity
·         Reduced stress levels and decreased anxiety
·         Water and air purification
·         Vitamin D
·         Regulate melatonin level
·         Slower, deeper breathing
·         Regulate serotonin levels
Feel Less Stressed And Sleep Better
Natural green spaces with trees will reduce air pollution and provide shade and are perfect places to go to unwind. Plants and flowers have a very therapeutic effect on our health and wellbeing and can elevate our moods and make us feel happier and decrease anxiety. It has been found that if you spend 20-30 minutes per day in nature you will experience a drop in cortisol, which is otherwise know as the ‘stress hormone’. Vitamin D is also known to improve blood flow and lower blood pressure and can promote bone and dental health. The right amount of melatonin can ensure that you are able to get a good night’s sleep, so that you wake up refreshed and rejuvenated.
 Inside Spaces
Indoor spaces including offices, restaurants, hotels and your home can be made to feel more welcoming with the introduction of plants, trees and flowers. However, there are some environments where it is impossible to have the real thing including places that are too cold/hot or too light/dark and here the benefits of colour and greenery can be still appreciated with the introduction of artificial plants, which again can boost our mood, make us feel more relaxed and less anxious. It is true that faux plants cannot clean the air as real plants, which can rid the air of toxins and improve humidity levels but there are certainly benefits and a case for artificial plants.
 Conclusion
You could say that mingling with nature is getting away from it all and leads to a reduction in stress levels and rejuvenation of your mind and body. Time spent outdoors whether it’s 10 minutes walking in a city park or a few hours in the countryside does make us happier and healthier. Synthetic nature can also be good for our wellbeing and it is certainly better than no nature.

It's #bellletstalkday How many of us remember being told by our kindergarten teacher to "put on our listening ears ?" Is it not true? Listening is one of the earliest and powerful forms of communication we are gifted with. Sadly , it's one of the skills used at the least. We are often distracted by our own thoughts, external noises and everything else going around us . But more than ever , these are the times we need to support our community in becoming better listeners . This reminds me of a beautiful point my mom used to share often " Courage is what takes to stand up and speak and Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen". Taking our agenda out of the picture and allowing ourselves to actively involve in a conversation with a person respecting their emotions , beliefs , thoughts and opinion will help us to practice humility , courage , empathy to name a few .. Not just today , but everyday could we do few moments of active listening ? #bellletstalk day - an effort to raise awareness and fighting the stigma surrounding mental illness in Canada . #improvementalhealth #helpinneed #isolated #uplifteachother #mindfulness #weneedthis #listen #letstalkmentalhealth #jointhecause (at Greater Toronto Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKmJZ85DhGN/?igshid=1xbh19y599e4k
