#I'm so gay for Aubrey Plaza
Queer Christmas movie recs
Breakfast with Scot (2007) An absolutely delightful feel-good movie about a retired NHL player and his partner reluctantly taking in an effeminate boy they are extremely not equipped to handle, and eventually becoming a family. One of my favorite movies of all time. Content notes: homophobia, sexism, mild violence, bullying, brief vomit, shitty parenting but I promise they learn their lesson.
The Christmas Setup (2020) The first gay Lifetime Christmas movie, and it's exactly what you'd expect based on that. Big-city attorney visits his hometown for Christmas, falls for his high school crush, saves the beloved local train station from demolition. There's a really sweet element of queer history involved, and Fran Drescher is great as the nosy matchmaking mom. Content notes: dead dad backstory, hilariously inaccurate depiction of computer algorithms.
Single All The Way (2021) Another home-for-the-holidays romcom with a nosy matchmaking family, this one with a fake-dating premise and a Black love interest. Jennifer Coolidge makes a good kooky aunt, and the main character's love of plants is very true to the queer experience. Content notes: infidelity (not committed by the main characters), looks like I didn't take notes on this one while I was watching so there might be more I'm not remembering but nothing too major.
Carol (2015) Oscarbait '50s period drama with Rooney Mara as a young saleswoman and Cate Blanchett as an older divorcee. I actually didn't love this one the first time I saw it, but last year I got an urge to watch it again and if you're in the mood for cinematic eyefucking it will come through for you on that front. It's a little bit of a downer, lots of homophobia and societal obstacles and ennui, but it's a very pretty film with a... maybe not happy, but at least cautiously optimistic ending. Content notes: homophobia, custody conflict, blackmail, mentions of infidelity.
Happiest Season (2020) I do recommend this movie BUT you gotta go into it with the right expectations. It was billed as a feel-good Christmas romance and it is not that! It's the coming-out story of a closeted lesbian (Mackenzie Davis) who treats her wonderful girlfriend (Kristen Stewart) like crap instead of telling her family they're dating, and you will come out of it screaming about how the wonderful girlfriend should have ended up with Aubrey Plaza's character (which, by the way, Aubrey Plaza wholeheartedly agrees with at 3:36 of this video). But it's well-made, it's really funny, there are a lot of good characters and good moments—it's worth watching as long as you know what you're getting into. Content notes: homophobia, bullying of an autistic-coded character, and honestly I think a lot of the shit Mackenzie Davis's character pulls counts as emotional abuse.
Tangerine (2015) A low-budget movie filmed entirely on iPhones, set in Los Angeles on Christmas Eve, centering around a day in the life of two trans sex workers of color. Rough and gritty, hysterically funny, a little dark at times but not tragic. Content notes: transphobia, lots of infidelity, racism/slurs, mild violence, drugs, one very brief scene involving the death of a pet (not shown).

Okay I know this post will gain absolutely zero traction but the more I think about it the more I want to cry about it??
slight spoilers for one of the character arcs in Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre ahead,,,
So I saw Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre in the cinema today. I was alone, it was reasonably full, the film technically only opened two days ago, and it's wider release isn't for another week, but I had time to kill and it was the only thing that piqued my interest. It sits in an interesting spot tonally, comparative, I'd say, to Netflix Exclusive Michael Bay movie 6 Underground, though to use a more recent marker I'd drop it somewhere near Bullet Train (though it's definitely much closer to 6 Underground). All this context to say that I went into this Jason Statham-lead espionage action movie with zero expectations and almost completely blind.
So please believe me when I say I was truly blindsided with joy to have canonical, casual queer representation in this Jason Statham-lead espionage action movie.
Maybe it's that I don't watch a lot of media now, but it's something I noticed while watching Glass Onion too, both with Benoit and Hugh Grant (ha, put a pin in that) and especially with the character of Peg, and it makes me a bit teary and excited when I think about it. There's something to be said for how far we've come, to the point that Casual Queer Rep is even possible. There's something about watching Peg get all flustered talking to Helen and knowing that it's because she has a crush, without it having to be flagged, spelled out, or otherwise othered by the film or its writing.
It's normalised.
Which I know shouldn't be a big deal, but right now, to me, it is. I didn't realise I could feel this way; to see a full character who just so happens to be gay, where the plot doesn't revolve around her being gay, but that part of her identity is still made clear?? I love Peg so much holy shit.
But Glass Onion is the second in a series that has established itself as a forerunner for casual diversity. Let me tell you about how Operation Fortune made me want to YELL in theatres.
It's the 8th of January, and it might be a bit early to call it, but Danny Francesco might be my favourite character of the year.
Is he perfect? God no, he's objectively not a great person; he's sleeping with his sister-in-law, he's a Hollywood diva, he's demanding, and he (spoilers, seriously) ends up engaged to a war criminal. Who happens to be the main antagonist. Who happens to be Hugh Grant. Danny is the light of my life, however, and I love him with my whole heart.
So in the beginning we're told that Danny turned down $10m because he didn't want to jump out of Greg (Hugh Grant)'s cake and sing Happy Birthday; whatever, I thought, Greg is a rich, eccentric with an obsession with celebrities, and Danny is the biggest star right now, I shouldn't read anything into it because Sometimes Rich People Just Do Things For Status Reasons. We're also told, and subsequently shown, Greg tries to take celebrity's partners/girlfriends. Cue Sarah (Aubrey Plaza) in a bright red dress that I will dream about for the next month.
Also, in the scene where Danny, Sarah, and Orson (Jason Statham) are joining the fancy party, there's some distinctly fruity vibes between the three of them, but I'm not here to push my Orson/Sarah/Danny polycule agenda, just know that I have one.
So obviously Greg is excited to see Danny, but later makes a Very Distinct Pass at Sarah, inviting both her and Danny to stay with him for the weekend, with an implied Wink Wink Nudge Nudge.
While they end up taking him up on that offer, Danny, who started the film having refused Greg's Rich Weirdo Request, and now having to spend time with him for the job, finds that he actually genuinely likes Greg, who appears to genuinely like him back, doting on him, even giving him gifts.
When Danny says to Sarah "(I'm paraphrasing, about Greg) he's really into you! If you don't take him up on his offer then I might!" my eyeballs were Out Of My Head. Like sure it sounds like a joke that would be written in to simply highlight Danny's materialism, a whole 'gay for pay' joke, something about his vanity, or even just an offhand joke that I might hear one of my straight friends who were super comfortable and confident in their sexuality say about their best friends, I was So primed for this to be something that the audience could laugh off or dismiss in hindsight. Like in my mind that solidified my headcanon of Danny as bi, but I was so used to queerbaiting and years of being told I was reading into things.
So as the plot continues, Danny's fondness for Greg goes on, turns into something incredibly genuine, and looking back, he clearly has a hero-worship crush on Greg by the end of the film.
The last shot we see of Danny and Greg is the pair of them getting into an elevator after Greg pulls a stone cold power move on the films secondary antagonists, which he had Danny assist with for flare after Danny asked specifically to stay with him for that event. In the elevator, Danny tells Greg that that was "the coolest thing he's ever seen someone do" and that's the last we physically see of them.
HOWEVER!! THE ICING!! THE CHERRY!!
At the very end of the film, one of the protagonists mentions how he's gone into the film industry, and the response he gets is;
"You better not be talking about Danny Francesco and his fiancee Greg Simmonds!"
an accurate depiction of me as the credits began to roll;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WE WIN THESE!!
BOTH DANNY AND GREG ARE CANONICALLY BI/PAN IN THIS JASON STATHAM-LEAD ESPIONAGE ACTION MOVIE IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 2023!! THEY BOTH LIVE UNTIL THE END!! THEY'RE ENGAGED!! THEY'RE BOTH ABSOLUTE DISASTERS!! THEY'RE BOTH FULL, ROUNDED CHARACTERS WHO HAPPEN TO BE QUEER!!
I get choked up thinking about it now, considering how quietly overwhelmed I felt in the theatre realising that Danny and Greg's comments and moments throughout the film weren't some elaborate joke, the dialogue that reminds me of my friends, the moments that felt true to my life as a queer person, they werent the setup for any kind of homophobic mixup, miscommunication, or microaggression; no, I finally, actually felt like I saw a part of myself, of my community represented in media.
Everyone in that movie is terrible in their own way, but Danny and Greg just happened to be terrible people who are also queer. Are they perfect representation? No! Thank fuck! I think we deserve more dumbass, disaster, unethical queers in media.
Even if I don't necessarily recommend this movie (it's pretty okay if you're a fan of the genre I suppose), I subjectively love it and especially it's characters, with my whole entire heart.
Danny Francesco is canonically a dumbass, bi disaster who fell for his sugar daddy, war criminal Hugh Grant. Good for him. It's what he deserves. 🥰🥰🥰

After waking up naked and hungover in the beds of countless men in college, I began to wonder if maybe I…wasn’t straight. (Reasonable!) I knew I loved women—dating them, having sex with them, connecting with them emotionally—so being gay didn’t seem right. So 12 years ago, while sitting in my sophomore dorm, I turned to the holder of all knowledge: Google. I searched for “bisexual man,” which didn’t reveal much beyond studies about gay/bisexual men and HIV, and an off-hand listicle arguing that male bisexuality was, in fact, real. (No kidding.) There wasn’t much else.
If you Google “bisexual man” today, you’ll find hundreds of articles pertaining to bisexuality. In fact, if you expand your search to just “bisexuality,” you’ll find thousands more. These articles aren’t just attempting to justify our existence; they discuss the nuances of bi identity—how to date as a bi person, how to come out as bi, how to know if you’re bi, and where to find a bi community.
There are also countless celebrities now proudly claiming bi or pansexual labels—Stephanie Beatriz, Willow Smith, Janelle Monae, and Aubrey Plaza, to name a few. For the love of God, Susan Sarandon just came out as bi. (Would I like to see more male celebrities coming out as bi? Yes, so I’m going to have to get famous myself.)
Media representation has also gotten stronger and more serious. We’re no longer depicted as morally dubious weirdos or the punch-lines of jokes. Instead, we're given complex bi characters in shows like Big Mouth, the new Gossip Girl, The Sandman, Sense8, Harley Quinn, and so many more. There was even a show called The Bisexual on Hulu in 2018.
In some arenas, we are in the heyday of bisexual visibility, and I, for one, am living. For the first time ever, women aren’t refusing to date me because I’m bisexual—they want to date me because I’m bisexual! But to be honest, I'm still not satisfied (even though I now get laid significantly more often—bless).
“Sadly, many people still believe that bisexuality doesn’t exist or that bisexuality is a character flaw—a wishy-washy failure to commit to one gender—rather than a commitment to embrace our whole selves," says Robyn Ochs, activist for bisexual visibility and editor of Bi Women Quarterly. “While we have made great strides, we are not yet visible enough. We still have very basic educational work to do.”
Of course, Ochs is right. We haven’t solved biphobia, and bi people still have the worst mental health outcomes of any sexuality by nearly every single metric, including higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts than both gay and straight folks, according to Current Sexual Health Reports. This is largely due to the double discrimination bi people face by not feeling welcomed or like part of either straight or gay communities, causing us to feel alone and isolated.
That aside, it's important to recognize that we are in (forgive me) unprecedented territory—where we can promote bi visibility while simultaneously moving beyond it, and where we can work to more directly address some of the issues plaguing our community. Visibility isn’t a cure-all. It’s just the first step in any movement, and yes, bi people are having a goddamn movement!
Visibility essentially says: Look, we’re real! You need to treat us with some damn respect. It also helps people realize they’re not alone, that they have a community. Given the aforementioned higher rates of mental health issues for bi people, community is essential. But seeing yourself on screen or reading about someone else’s experience doesn’t automatically transport you to a room full of bi people trying to make friends and find romantic partners. There is a large gap between bisexual visibility and bisexual community. Since I don’t think scientists are on the brink of discovering the key to human teleportation, we’re going to have to create and attend bi spaces ourselves in order to feel less alone. We, the bi people of the world, are going to have build bi communities.
“After visibility comes bi life,” Ian Lawrence-Tourinho, executive director of the American Institute of Bisexuality, says. “We’re not so easy to erase anymore, as much as some will try, there are just too many of us out in the open.”
Right now, bi communities are predominantly online. We have bisexual Reddit, bi Twitter, and my favorite, bisexual TikTok (or BiTok). Using hashtags, we can find and connect with other bi folks around the world, which is wonderful and how I’ve met many of my own bi friends. But it’s time for bi people to move away from the internet (and digital spaces) and actually exist in the real world. We need physical bi spaces.
We need bisexual bars! I want a queer place where I can bring my queer girlfriend and feel comfortable making out with her without gay men judging me for erroneously believing we’re a straight couple co-opting their space. (For what it’s worth, I get why gay men are protective of their spaces, but like, shit, where am I supposed to go? A straight bar? I’d rather die.)
We need bisexual sex clubs! At every queer sex party I’ve been to, I’ve only ever seen women hooking up with women, and men…also hooking up with women. Which, fine! But men should feel empowered to hook up with all genders—in raunchy positions, no less! I want a safe place where my boyfriend, girlfriend, theyfriend, and I can all go to town on each other. As it is now, it feels like sex clubs either cater to gay men exclusively or to a very straight clientele (e.g., men aren’t allowed down in the play section unless accompanied by a woman)—they are fundamentally not inclusive of bisexual folks.
Of course, we also need sober, non-sexual places for bi people. Hello, bisexual rock climbing meet-ups! Bisexual people are obsessed with rock climbing. Why? Unclear. Personally, I’m a grown-ass man who has better things to do than climb rocks, but I’m in the minority of bi folks. I’ve accepted that. So let’s give the bi people what they want!
Maybe you’re not a rock climbing bisexual, but instead, you’re a Dungeons and Dragons bisexual. (Don’t you dare make a “Why not both?” joke!) Why not D&D meet-ups where bi folks can bring everyone in their polycule and nerd the fuck out?
"LGBTQIA+ spaces are often dominated by gay people, in particular gay men,” Vaneet Mehta, author of the forthcoming book Bisexual Men Exist, says. “And while you’d hope that they would be more accepting of bisexuality, they often do not understand or support others in the [bi] community.”
So let's make our own damn spaces. Any bi person can work to create a safe bi space, even those who work traditional nine-to-five jobs. I know this, as I actually threw a massive sex party (over 170 attendees) in Brooklyn, New York called BISLUT. Since I hadn’t been to a sex club that felt genuinely bisexual for all genders, I threw a party for bi men and their admirers. At the risk of tooting my own horn, everyone has been and continues to be absolutely obsessed with it—not just because of the sex, though the sex was awesome, but because bi people were in a safe space surrounded by other bi folks where they could express their sexuality fully and be their most authentic selves.
“Like people of any sexuality, most bis want to have fun, meet each other, and have friends who ‘get’ them,” says Lawrence-Tourinho. “And let’s be honest, we want to have exciting, fulfilling sex and love lives.”
A loving, supportive, and fun bisexual community is what comes after bi visibility. Not only can this type of community improve mental health outcomes, but it can also encourage more bi folks to come out and embrace who they are. Countless studies have indicated how much better life can get once you embrace your sexuality, but there’s a caveat: Queer folks need to have friends, community, and support in coming out. If you lose your friends, your family and your home as a result, your mental health only deteriorates. Safe, physical spaces to foster community can be game-changers in helping bi people come out safely.
These spaces may even help decrease rates of homelessness in the bisexual community. For bi youth who get displaced or kicked out after coming out, safe spaces are essential for finding support.
Am I dreaming big here? Maybe. But why the hell not? By giving people the opportunity to be themselves, we might unknowingly raise the next President of the United States, or the next Lady Gaga, or the next bisexual icon.
Sign me up. My fellow bis: Let’s get to work.

9 (shit nine?) People you'd like to get to know better.
Thank you for the tag @domestikhighway58, let's see if I can figure out tumblr enough to complete this <3
Also, no way you watch call the midwife??? Ahhh, that's my favourite comfort show. I'm a whole season behind because life stuff got in the way but I can't wait for September/October to come around so I can sit and restart my weekly tradition (with my mum shh) of watching ctm in the run-up to Christmas
last song: After All by Cher
favorite color: Green or Blue
currently watching: Criminal Minds (slowly), The Mentalist (also slowly), The Sixth Commandment
last movie: Emily The Criminal not at all because I'm in love with Aubrey Plaza
currently reading: This list is too long to fit here because I am a slow af reader (thanks dyslexia) but a quick rundown of fanfics are: Hide and Seek, and Fortunate Fool by highway58. Rescue Dog by Jason_Silver and Star Power, and Homewrecker by goobzoop & darkbluedarkblue.
Non fanfic is also far too long to write but the book I picked up most recently to try to finish is Call Me By Your Name.
sweet/spicy/savory: Sweet all the way. I love spicy and savoury things too, but I'm much more fussy about those than I am sweet stuff!
relationship status: Single. And hopelessly in love with a friend.
current obsession: Besides Hotchreid? Uhhh.... Criminal Minds in general? Fic writing? I also really like baking, but that's not really a 'current' obsession, more a prolonged interets.
last thing i googled: do any zoos in america have honey badgers - for one little scene in a fic I was writing. Before that it was 'summer fruits pavlova recipe' because I have a shit ton of eggs to use haha.
currently working on: Fanfic wise I'm trying to finish Close Ain't Close Enough (a/b/o) and an untitled wip set at the end of the CM episode Psychodrama. Non fanfic - The Highway Code. Haha. Theory test revision takes all brain power at the moment.
zero pressure tags: @spencer-reids-adventures @hotchxreid @thefandomlesbian @starrr-dusttt @gay-in-a-jar @panevanbuckley

white lotus s2 finale rundown
(spoilers ahead)
in case you're wondering, here are the characters that survived the second season: Daphne and Cameron (the supposed scammers, played by Meghann Fahy and Theo James) Harper and Ethan Spiller (the couple on the rocks, played by Aubrey Plaza and Will Sharpe) Albie, Dominic and Bert Di Grasso (all of the men who were on some sort of heritage trip, played by Adam DiMarco, Michael Imperioli and F. Murray Abraham) Portia (Tanya's assistant, who gets whisked away to Sicily, played by Haley Lu Richardson) Jack (the supposed nephew of the head gay, played by Leo Woodall) Valentina, and the rest of the hotel staff (she's the director of this location, who is played by Sabrina Impacciatore) Lucia and Mia, my problematic faves (both of whom use their bodies to get what they want, and the only non guests involved, played by Simona Tabasco and Beatrice Grannó) presumably Greg, Tanya's husband who we met last season in Hawai'i (played by Jon Gries) although we don't have any confirmation of this fact
that means the dead characters are: Tanya McQuoid, Quentin, Didier and Niccoló (played by Jennifer Coolidge, Tom Hollander, Bruno Gouery [from Emily in Paris] and Stefano Gianino), putting the death toll at 4. it is not told whether or not Hugo or the captain of the boat survived, but I would personally doubt it, because they did seem significantly far out from the shore. in the end, I'm sure only mike white knows for sure.
now, let's talk about that season finale.
first off, I'm wondering if greg actually was planning something, or if tanya blew it out of proportion in some way. I guess we'll never know, although there were definitely some red flags, especially with the way that jack was acting.
let's talk about jack for a second. I'm so happy that he redeemed himself in my eyes, and let portia go and even gave her advice that probably saved her life. who knows what might've happened if portia went back to the hotel? I'm a jack fan at the end of this season, because the guy was just doing what he could with the cards he was dealt, but didn't want to actively hurt someone (because if tanya had gotten hurt, he would've been peripherally involved, but wouldn't have played a direct part in her demise)
the digrassos. I feel like they could've used some comeuppance, apart from albie. it sucks that dominic will probably just go back to what he's been doing, and that albie vouched for his dad. I feel like the fact that none of these men have been affected by their experiences is shown in the airport scene, where a young woman walks by and they all turn their heads to ogle her. I think it shows that this gross misogyny kind of runs in their family (because they kind of perpetuate it) and that it would be hard for them to change without serious introspection.
super happy for valentina. did mia use her? sure. but it was definitely mutually beneficial, and mia does say that she wants to help valentina find a lesbian, and even take her out to bars, so I foresee a prosperous future for valentina. also gotta say, small win for the gays because valentina wasn't killed at the end of this season.
isabella and rocco seem fine. I'm happy that Isabella was always so polite to valentina, and I think she genuinely wanted to be friends with her, so a good future for these two and hopefully they have a good life.
ethan nearly chokes cameron, and I am so unhappy that cameron lives at the end of the season. I think it would be cool to have a cameo from daphne next season, where she is ending her stay at a white lotus with her trainer and her sons, and we just assume that she killed cameron or something. I am happy for ethan and harper, but it seems like a bandaid on their situation, so I'm not sure what the future looks like for these couples. I do think their stories could have been wrapped up better, and I wonder if mike white found himself burdened by the inclusion of so many characters this season, because the ending did not seem as closed as season one.
lucia and mia are doing well, lucia has loads of money that she got after scamming albie, and mia has a job at the white lotus as a singer, so good for them. I could care less about albie, and as he says, that amount is a drop in the bucket for his father anyway. I also think it is legitimate karmic payment, that dominic will inadvertently help the lives of these two women after destroying the lives of the women in his family. I'm also happy that lucia and mia live, because I think there is a trend in media where promiscuous women are killed because of their promiscuity, so seeing them live was super endearing. especially since lucia says earlier in the season that she's worried that she will die because she's a prostitute, and prostitutes always die.
I'm kind of happy for portia, but I can't help but compare her to belinda. it feels kind of significant that one of these characters was a guest and the other an employee, and that one was white and the other was black, in terms of where they ended up. I do think the show could've paralleled their arcs better in this finale, and driven home the point that portia was coming from a point of privilege, and that's why she survived and got off relatively easy.
what was the point of including the story of the woman from the moors? who was that supposed to represent after the finale? my guess was tanya, but I don't think we'll get a follow up on her storyline, so the symbolism here doesn't really work. also, if it was tanya, the story is backwards, because she dies and the cheating spouse doesn't. is the point of the statues that this was the path one of the main couples was heading down, and then the statue breaking is a subversion, and their story won't end in tragedy? honestly, I have no idea.
I'm happy that tanya died. I was getting tired of her character, and I was scared that if she survived this season mike white would bring her back for season three, and I think the series will work better without through lines or continuing stories, and instead focuses on the only point of contact being the white lotus resorts.
I'm happy that the piano guy is gone. he wasn't that interesting, and I'm happy for mia.
greg, will we ever see him again? will we get a conclusion to his story?
it's really ironic that tanya ends up killing herself, because if greg was after her money, he's got it now. I would like to see greg get comeuppance, because I think he sucks.
just like greg, I feel like cameron didn't get his comeuppance, but I guess we might have to wait for another season to see if anything bad comes to him.
I feel kind of bad for the group of gays, but I also don't. I have mixed feelings about their group, and my thoughts about their ending are still developing. I do think that it's possible tanya overreacted and killed a bunch of people who didn't have completely nefarious intentions. this is another storyline that could've used a defter hand, because it feels incomplete.
I do think that it's weird that there is a kind of bury your gays going on with the show, considering that armond is the only death in season one (and we're shown that he's gay) and then we have two of the gays dying in this season. I doubt these are white's intentions, but it is kind of weird to look at this together, and I think the next season will cement the trends of the show.
final thoughts:
I would rate this season maybe a 6 or 6.5 out of 10. it was not as good as the first, however it was possibly more entertaining than the first. I think involving so many characters made it harder to have satisfying story beats for all of them, and loads of people online have pointed out that there is not a lot of interaction between the guests, or even that a lot of important plot points aren't taking place at the hotel. the first season seemed a lot more focused in its scope. I do believe that the show was intended to be a limited series, and I think it should have stayed that way, because I think it will only get worse as it goes on, when it could've ended on a high note last season. I'm down to watch the third season and see if mike white can redeem himself, and because there are a lot of technical aspects of the show that I enjoy, but I'm not eagerly anticipating it like I am other good shows like succession.
I do hope that mike white finds a way to tie up all of the loose ends of this season somehow, but I think all of the loose ends and dropped story beats really cheapened this season. it also makes me think that season one was lightning in a bottle that he will never be able to replicate.
anyway, a pretty disappointing follow up.

Happiest Season (2020)
Tumblr media
This movie opens with our central couple taking a chaotic tour of Candy Cane Lane. If you don't know what that is, this might not be the blog for you. Anyway, Abby (Kristen Stewart) is not very into Christmas, but her girlfriend Harper (Mackenzie Davis) is, so Harper is trying very hard to get Abby to love Christmas. Abby is just enjoying their evening together when Harper suggests that Abby goes home with her for Christmas. Abby doesn't have any family and has not yet met Harper's family, so it makes sense for them to do this now.
Abby has to find someone to pet sit for her, so she enlists her close friend John (Dan Levy). Abby is excited to be with a family for Christmas and what this means for their relationship, but then Harper tells Abby that she is not out to her parents, so naturally her parents think they're just roommates. Abby is less excited but still on board. More or less. Harper's mom Tipper (Mary Steenburgen) and dad Ted (Victor Garber) are very invested in his campaign to be mayor. Harper's sister Jane (Mary Holland) is chaotic and intense, but the family is mean to her basically constantly. Harper's other sister Sloane (Allison Brie) is preoccupied with her twin children and her specially curated gift basket company that her whole family doesn't take seriously even though she gave up being a lawyer to do it.
Things especially start to unravel when the family goes out to dinner and Tipper surprises Harper by inviting her high school boyfriend Connor (Jake McDorman) to dinner. Harper is mad, but she still doesn't tell her family why. Also at the restaurant is Harper's old "friend" from high school Riley (Aubrey Plaza) who is openly gay and very successful. Riley sees through the roommate charade immediately, and Abby doesn't feel the need to correct her, especially with how much Harper is doing to hide their relationship even though it’s hurting both of them.
This movie is really good. It's funny and heartfelt and the dichotomy of Harper's crazy family making it seem like being an orphan would be better versus Abby missing Christmas with her family and the whole holiday being kind of sad for her really helps you appreciate the good and the bad of your own Christmas traditions, whatever they may be. I expected some things to happen that didn't, and I'm glad they didn't. This was better than what I predicted anyway. Overall, 5 stars.

Who are some of your favorite tv/book/movie characters? And what is it about them that you love?
Oh jesus there are so many and I'm brain farting on all of them. I need to have a think...
Let's start with the obvious because he's who this tumblr is about.
My sweet baby boy Peter Parker (tasm version but all Peter Parker's are precious to me):
Tumblr media
Why? He's angsty, he loves to self flagellate, he blames the world's problems on himself, he's an introvert (now that I think about most of my fav characters are probably angsty introverts) he turns into a giddy nervous idiot around the girl he loves, he's sassy and cocky and stubborn and a bit of an ass at times, he's also a mushy little lover boy who simps hard for his ladies, he's a mommas boy (well...aunties boy), he mourns his losses hard and doesn't know how to get over them, he destroys personal relationships in misguided attempts to protect his loved ones, he's a perfect baby and can do no wrong and I love to turn him into a serial killing monster in my fics.
My second favorite sweet baby boy Spencer Reid:
Tumblr media
Why? He's another sad angsty introverted baby. I have a type. A gentle personality with an intense drive to protect his loved ones. Is self sacrificing. Would give up his life and safety in a second to save a stranger. He's a literal genius with an eidetic memory. Much like Peter Parker he would be an absolute simp for his ladies. He just wants someone to love him for himself and not have to watch his love get shot in the head in front of his eyes and traumatize him forever. Is that too much to ask for this poor angel?? Omg him and Peter really are a lot alike. So much trauma.
My favorite vampire hunter Guillermo de la Cruz:
Tumblr media
Why? I love that he started off being a timid pushover who's only dream was to become a vampire. Then he transforms in the most badass, gay, plus sized serial killer/vampire hunter. I'm pretty sure he's a sociopath. He's an evil bitch who looks like a sweet cherub in a grandpa cardigan. He has killed and will kill again to get what he wants. He will manipulate anyone and take control of his own life. I love him. I love that even though his morals are reprehensible, you still can't help but be on his side and root for his success in whatever nefarious scheme he has going on.
I should put this shit under a read more. I'm getting carried away and now I can't stop.
My heart and soul April Ludgate:
Tumblr media
Why? I would die for Aubrey Plaza. April is my favorite weirdo. She's a mean, harsh, scary, sarcastic bitch on the outside but a nervous, self doubting, awkward, loyal baby on the inside. She is a queen and deserves the world. And she adopted a three legged pitbull named Champion. She gave birth in full zombie make up. She's a Halloween loving freak. Her friends become her family. She's a ride or die kind of girl. She is perfection.
Yes I fell hard on the Munson train, sue me:
Tumblr media
Why? Why not? Look at him! He's lovely! He's an 80's outcast nerdy metal head who sells pot to his peers out of his lil lunch box. What a hero! People love to discuss his sexuality. To throw my hat into the mix, personally, I think he's pansexual. I think he would straight up fall in love with anyone who gives him an ounce of kindness and attention. He's a little dumb scaredy cat with a heart of gold and probably chain smokes himself to sleep every night. 10/10 would ride him deep into the night. He might of died young (in the dumbest way ever like the dumbass that he is) but he will always live on in the fics I create in my headspace as I go to bed each night.
okay last one
Michonne from the Walking Dead:
Tumblr media
Why? I would let her behead me with her katana without a second thought. She's the most bad ass bitch on that show (granted I haven't actually watched the show in forever, I stopped after Carl died, but I still adore those first handful of seasons). Like most of my other idiots on this list, Michonne is a quiet introvert who is fiercely loyal to people she considers family. She doesn't say much but when she does, it's important and you should fucking listen. She's intelligent, crafty, knows how to survive, and is stronger than any man on that show. What's not to love?

Twilight , happiest season, speak , camp x-ray adventure land
Yes! Thank you!
Twilight
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
Mmm, honestly I reject all of these categoriations, because I always enjoy it but I also objectively think it's not very good, haha. It's fun, and as a series I think it's brought a lot of joy to people, but it's never really been one for me? Which is kinda funny given I was definitely the target demographic when it initailly came out and my best friend was obsessed when we were in highschool.
Happiest Season
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
I actually watched this at the cinema when it came out and was surprised by the level of hate it got. Like is it good? No, but I didn't think it was that bad either. It's just a pretty run of the mill mediocre holiday movie, y'know? And the fact that it was gay just drew more critical attention to it than it would've if it was straight.
That said, I will say though that while I know everyone was all about Kristen Stewart's character leaving her fiancee for Aubrey Plaza's character, my controversial take is that the movie should've actually been Mackenzie Davis' character coming home after Kristen Stewart's character has dumped her and finding her ex's ex and having a fun, messy, antagonistic relationship with her that lets her process why the breakup happened before evolving into a sexy will-they-won't-they because I love mess and mutual exes finding each other, okay.
Speak
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
Ooo, I haven't seen this one! It looks interesting though. There are a few actors in it that I quite like. I do tend to be a little wary of movies that explore speech disability these days as it strikes a bit of a personal note, but at the same time I'm also interested to see how it's depicted, so I'll add it to my list!
Camp X-Ray
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
I haven't seen this one either! I'm starting to notice a pattern though, haha. ;-) This one doesn't really appeal to me, although I'm happy to be talked around? I'm just not really interested in films about Guantanamo Bay.
Adventureland
never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece
It's been a hot minute since I saw it, but I remember really enjoying it at the time!
Ask me about movies!

Wizards of the Coast revealing their first canonically autistic character for D&D (Asteria) has got me thinking about which of my past D&D characters are Autistic. And I think my conclusion is... All of them. Because I don't really know how to play them any other way.
I was only diagnosed last year. So have only made and played one character since then -Evelyn, who I have some art of on my page if you want to look (check the tags below). I only got to play her in a handful of sessions before that campaign and group came to an abrupt end (and I'm not ready to talk about that yet) but when I created Evelyn she was consciously and explicitly Autistic coded.
She was an investigator with a strong eye for detail, high perception and insight, worked best alone, an insomniac, bad habits and coping mechanisms... Lots of classic noir detective traits, but which were conscious reflections of personal traits of mine. And there's a long history of autisic and autistic coded detectives and sleuths in popular culture. I didn't play her long enough to flesh her out, but I was leaning into those tropes.
But even going back to my first character that I played years ago, Pruella (Proo) my fighter, there were definitely choices about the way I played her which were kind of autistic.
She was my first character, in my first D&D group, and I was very nervous about playing with new people, and role playing was something I was new to. So I played a socially awkward character. Over time I got more comfortable, so played her social awkwardness differently, but the characteristics fit
Proo was slow to pick up on social cues and expectations. She didn't recognise compliments that were given to her, or pick up on when she was flirted with. Once we were payed a reward by a prince, and I asked the DM how much I was given, and he asked me "are you going to stand and count it in front of the prince?" And yeah, of course I was! That's the most gold she'd held in her life, she wanted to know how much it was! Sometimes she may have come across as rude. I rationalised these things as being due to her living on the streets or under a bridge for half her life, and so not necessarily understanding social conventions, but I recognise those are also traits I chose because they are part of who I am. I feel out of place most places I go. I feel like a bit of a goblin trying to pass myself off as human (Proo is a half elf, but lived with 2 goblins, who were also social outcasts, under a bridge for a while)
Eleanor, my wizard, was definitely autistic, even if I didn't create her with that intention. Socially awkward, difficulty with crowds, special interests... From the start I described her as a dragon girl - the type of girl who would draw dragons in her note books, who might have had dragons on the front of her lunch box and her t-shirts at school, who loved any stories about dragons... I mean her best friend was a Kobold. Obsessed with dragons. Half way through the campaign I took the telepathic feat, and I rationalised that by saying she'd been able to read thoughts and talk to people with her mind the entire time, but didn't like doing it very often because it was too intimate and uncomfortable, a bit like prolonged eye contact. She also had the prodigy feat from the start, so had an extremely high arcana skill, and proficiency with alchemy. She dropped out of the Neverwinter Academy because she was bored and not allowed to study what interested her (and because fuck your wizard school). She was a nerd, as wizards tend to be, but in a very specific shambolic, clumsy, girl failure, disaster gay way.
Vanta is possibly my least Autistic coded character, because I tried to play her with a personality type different to mine. She's a sorcerer, so a high charisma character, and I am not a high charisma person. In practice this meant that I played her as quite aloof a lot of the time, and who spoke in quite a deadpan Aubrey Plaza-esque way, but could turn the charisma up if required. Vanta was a very focused character. She knew what she wanted, and had little interest in things that didn't further her goals. I think she was probably outwardly seen as un-empathetic, but she wasn't really, she just expressed it differently than most.
There was a time we were on a ship, and to protect ourselves during a storm we decided to tie ourselves to the ship so we weren't thrown overboard. Everyone got out their hempen rope and then I took out my silk rope - cue jokes about me being fancy. I said hemp rope was too rough on the skin. Cue some more jokes about it being a kink thing, etc... but you know, sensory issues, they're a thing! Vanta wore silk for the same reason!
Even when trying to play someone different to myself, the autistic traits are unavoidable, because it's all still coming from me. Obviously I'm using pretty broad strokes here, and limiting myself with the examples so as not to go on and on. But my conclusion is that it might not be possible for me to play characters who aren't at least a bit autistic. Also, getting diagnosed has allowed me to look back at these people I've created and still spend a lot of time thinking about, and notice new things about them. And I think that's pretty cool. (This post has been sat in my drafts for a while now and I forgot about it, so I'm just going to post it)

'HAPPIEST SEASON' FIRST LOOK
From People Magazine:
"Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis are about to make the holidays a lot funnier.
The Charlie's Angels and Twilight star, 30, and the Terminator: Dark Fate actress, 33, are starring in Happiest Season, a theatrical Christmas rom-com release that features a lesbian love story.
The movie, coming to theaters Nov. 25, was co-written and directed by Veep actress Clea DuVall, who says these types of holiday stories are long overdue.
"I'm a huge fan of Christmas movies, but I had never seen my story represented," says DuVall, 43, who starred as secret service agent Marjorie on Veep. "Happiest Season felt like a great opportunity to tell a universal story from a new perspective."
Stewart agrees. "I think I've wished to see a gay Christmas rom com my whole life," she tells PEOPLE. "I'm so happy and proud of Clea for bringing this into the world."
Stewart adds that the stress of being around family is something that everyone going home for the holidays can relate to, regardless of their sexuality. "I love when holiday movie makes you long for an idea of home, but also examines how hilarious and hard reality at home can be sometimes," she says.
Happiest Season follows the story of Abby (Stewart) who plans to propose to her girlfriend Harper while attending Harper's family holiday party, only to discover her girlfriend hasn't actually come out to her conservative parents yet.
The movie also stars Mary Steenburgen, Victor Garber, Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, Dan Levy—and the film's co-writer (and DuVall's fellow Veep costar) Mary Holland.
DuVall and Stewart both say the movie was incredibly fun to film. "Maybe I'm biased, but this was one of the most fun sets I have ever been on," DuVall says. "From the cast to the crew, everyone showed up each day with an excitement and energy that made every day a joy."
Stewart adds, "We couldn’t have had a better more loving pack of weirdos supporting each other on this one. Had an absolute blast.”

not exactly the one I'm writing but... Fear Street x Happiest Season AU would fit so well?? Sam as the misunderstood closeted lesbian in a toxic family, Deena "have they ever met a lesbian?!" Johnson, Kate as Aubrey Plaza being the actual best character, Simon as the gay best friend there to save the day, there's even a Peter...

FERVER YOU LIKE CRIMINAL MINDS!!! do you have any hot takes/opinions on it >:)
ur letting me talk about a tv show on my mcyt blog? for Free? ^_^ because Absolutely
rest is under a cut but i totally agree w tubbo in that i love spencer reid
s1-11 reid supremacy. idk what the prison arc is, never heard of it, i'm closing my eyes (they erased all of his neurodivergent traits post-prison and called it character development NO THANK YOU)
s2-7 prentiss my beloved <3 my wife actually . either she or reid is my fav character ^_^
prentiss becoming unit chief in s13 and beyond was a girlboss move but it ruined her characterization; morgan would've been so much more well-suited for the position
morgan and garcia should've ended up together... they were True Love
but fuck you homophobic cbs because you know who else were in love . morgan and reid :/
(but i'd never want their ship to be canon bc i KNOW cbs would ruin it... but it’s okay because their rs is plenty home of sexual in canon already — but honestly morcia or moreid supremacy)
no one in the bau is straight except maybe hotch, who is the token hettie (i will die by lesbian emily. she and jj or garcia should kiss maybe)
best seasons are s4-7 (but s/o to s11 for oddly being REALLY gay for some reason)
listen i know i said morgan & reid but alvez & reid also kinda hit different
maeve did NOT deserve to die like that.
the show handled the dilaudid arc in the most terrible way,,, they really just brushed that shit off 💀💀 (revelations itself was a captivating episode though)
sue sylvester jane lynch diana reid um
ALEX BLAKE IS A MILF 💥💥💳
the fuckignf religious allusions they had for reid, prentiss, and morgan drives me NUTS like how can i express that these characters are SO unintentionally geared toward gay people
i liked reid's s5 hair . talk to the hand
hotch was like. the team’s neglectful dad (but if you show that gif of reid tumbling into hotch’s arms at the end of the revelations episode, i WILL cry)
prentiss & reid’s wlw/mlm solidarity, sibling behavior, best friends status, whatever i'm in love with them,,, something about that particular kind of dynamic is sooo <33 there's a REASON i'm so in love with qnf it's the same type of beat
i'm in love aubrey plaza srs but holy shit i do not like cat adams .
ROSSI IS FUNNY i love that pasta-loving italian guy . like he's just there vibing and he's like, idk, old?
gideon is a different breed of human and the tone indicator for this is neutral
EMILY’S LAUREN ARC IS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE ARC EVER
my favorite episode EVER is minimal loss, though. it's so good it's SO good like the religious allusions, the spencer & emily interactions... i rewatch it all the time
