if i listen really closely i can hear the quiet snoozy breathing of the sweet black cat who now lives in my room! oh, now she is purring.

(contains minor mention of the study of death/dead bodies, but also cat pictures, classical music, and minor spoilers for the end of the most recent season of star trek: strange new worlds)

reading more victoria goddard (blackcurrant fool is somehow *even* *more* for medievalist academics, they visit fantasy university and then the main character saves the day through the power of his dissertation research for crying out loud), some assorted libby holds from jenny odell and amitav ghosh, some kj charles inspired by the medieval mlm romance i finished a few weeks ago (which was great but i was so taken with the idea of posting a whole historical assessment that i scared myself out of talking about it, so maybe next time).

but the book that's been the biggest presence in my life lately has been the audio book version of mary roach's stiff: the curious lives of human cadavers, which i picked up because it had a little Moment back when it came out and i remember thinking that an approachable, sympathetic look at this kind of medical history would be fascinating. and it is! it is just as full of interesting information and humorous, humanizing turns of phrase as you'd like! roach doesn't hesitate to ask, like, intense questions of the people she interviews, nor does she ignore or downplay various gruesome topics, but the audiobook narrator has a hint of a southern accent and gets the mix of tones of voice (from ironic to earnest and back) really nicely. and also, sometimes i'm glad i'm listening to it as an audio book so i don't have to consciously continue turning pages, it'll keep playing even if i stop listening or need to disengage, because there's no shortage of actually quite challenging material. not for the faint of heart, but also, i can't regret reading it.

watching the new season of ghosts from the bbc! the second season of ofmd of course, both because it was fun and because i had to out of self-defense; uhhhh what else this month has been so long and also so fast! the musical episode of strange new worlds which was GREAT. how good were some of those songs!! like on their own, i would listen to nyota and christine and la'an's songs-- reminded me of the mix CD a friend made me for a birthday one year that mixed, like, barenaked ladies with some songs from the buffy musical episode. then the finale of this season which (minor spoilers here) i found actually so compelling, like, i've been mildly ehh about a lot of the gorn stuff (not la'an, but the concept of the gorn always feels very old-school scifi and the more serious they try to play it, the worse that effect usually) but then the monster design and movement when they finally appear on screen? excellent.

though to be entirely honest, the thing i've come back to and watched/listened to most consistently has been the new series of dimension 20, burrow's end. i managed to tune in as a campaign was starting, and actually more or less keep up! huge for me. the bear in ep 2 was all-to-close to some of the body horror i'd just been reading about with stiff, so this month has been 'so you'd like to get better about dealing with body horror?' for me in a way. unintentionally. i think i am appreciating this series more than i would have if i hadn't read and enjoyed watership down a few years back, but the added edge of, like, for-real magic from the d&d elements makes it even more fun. i love the new (to me) players, i love seeing the old ones in their new roles, i love that while the conceit seems to be 'humans are like eldritch horrors to woodland creatures' on the surface, there's also clearly something (or things?) else going on.

listening checking in on my spotify daylist lately to see what moods i've been assigned (soul-crushing once, which was wild to see as a genre, but goblincore also so. whatever i guess!) paper writing lockdown included more autoheart, more yws gwynedd, and like a 24-hour lockdown on @lessthansix's 'deferring panic' playlist, from which i share the following track as a thank-you:

playing tuned into dnd as a virtual player tonight so that i could stay home and supervise the NEW BABY aka this little (large) black dumpling of a cat who i cannot quite believe is my very own. playing such classics as 'ribbon on a string' and 'this is a ball that makes food come out when you play with it, ooooooh' and 'i hope my eyes feel normal again after i stop putting my face directly on you so much and i have not somehow developed an allergy to cat dander in the six weeks since we last had a cat come visit'. playing the classic game, 'so you think you can be responsible for another life form! and are you willing to risk an increase in your experience for loss in order to gain an increase in your experience of love?' (also while we're here: why is naming the hardest part of any endeavor. naming wifi networks, naming pokemon, and now this, a real live creature! who i want to treat with love and also humor, while showing wit and personality at the same time. hell.)

making fixed up a sweater my housemate was going to get rid of. i am not, habitually, a fibercrafter (though not for want of opportunity or, even, interest sometimes), but this made me want to find other easy and quick things to do with yarn.

working on writing a paper for my first ever 30-min conference presentation, which is also going to be the first time i submit a paper ahead of time for someone (a professor i do not usually work with, but whose work and career and writing i admire) to read and give real comments on. this is fine. i am simultaneously trying to use this as an opportunity to squish an entire chapter's worth of notes and observations and ideas into a single presentation, and trying to not do that. but i want her take on all of it! i also...do need to write all of it. but getting a chance to slow down and take a bit of extra time with it was also very welcome. gave a guest lecture this week on a subject only vaguely related to my own work, which required a lot of extra reading (not even to know what to say, but just to be confident that i wasn't missing anything massive), and also did organize my department's halloween party, so. it's been a busy last ten days, and i'm excited to wrap some of this up.

A THING.

It's a story that I wrote on another website, one that I hope you'll never find, and that, dear friends, is the edited version of it. Before actually publishing it I'd like to get feedback on it pretty please ? Thank youuuu.

Moments like this were Chan's favorite moments; to be able to see and witness happiness, and not only from his members but also from the staff - most of the time welcoming and kind. See a smile on thousand of people's faces, hundreds or even dozens; it was heartwarming. It was the reason why the Australian was glad to be given this opportunity. In all honesty, he was practically bouncing on his feet when his manager mentioned a collaboration or a kind of interview with BuzzFeed Celeb. He was no stranger to this name - or agency, having watched some popular videos with the latest trending artists. So you can imagine that being here, in those studios, in front of those cameras, was practically a dream come true.

"Thank you for having us today!" he bowed to the cameras, his members following along and thanking properly the person who made this possible. He bent down, knees on the floor, and caught the black puppy who was zooming past him excitedly, ready to annoy his brother, just like he did during the entirety of the shooting. "We enjoyed every second of it, and those cute little guys were really sweet."

He couldn't help but baby talk to the small creature in his hands. The mere thought that the small dog was fitting in his hand was making him giggle and hold him closer, kissing the top of his furry head as 'Maniac' was wriggling in his arms, unable to stay still for more tan a few seconds. It made Chan realize how small they were. Humans and animals were alike, at a point of their life, they all have been small, young, passionate and eager to discover the world. It was more than just an interview; it was a refreshing day, a day which made him remember his youth and the importance of passion, the worth of life. He did not need a puppy to remember that, but it did help.

"You don't have to thank us. We should be the one thanking you for agreeing to come here today." a member of the staff answered, one who was holding a clipboard - her name is Bea, if Chan remembers correctly. She was a tad woman, hard-looking with short hair and piercing eyes, her arms tick with muscles and her shoulder broad with what Chan knew was back muscles - she was working out, he was quite sure about this fact, even if it meant nothing, he just liked being observant. But despite her rough exterior - as some might call it, her heart seemed as soft and warm as anyone. She watched with heart eyes the puppies stumbling on their own feet, playfully biting one another as the remaining kids were still sat on the ground, playing with them. "Those cute guys are shelter dogs. It's nice to see them enjoy themselves out of their cage."

"Really?" Jisung said out loud as he was cuddling a very relaxed brown puppy, Minho sitting next to him as he was stroking the baby's pink belly. It is not because he is known as the 'cat butler' that he doesn't like dogs. In fact, the dancer was suffering during the entirety of the interview. He tried really hard to lure the puppies: toys, baby talk, knocking on the floor. He failed - totally. So being able to pet one eventually was a great achievement - bonus point for petting him next to Jisung.

The latter was whining, pouty lips on full display at the mention of the shelter they were housed at - an expression that Minho quite enjoyed if not for the fact that it was out of sadness, Jisung was cute, he couldn't help himself but chuckle. The mere thought of them being stuck in cages all day long, without the assurance that they will be adopted was painful. As a dog owner and an animal lover it was basically a knife to his chest. "I want to adopt him."

If anyone noticed what he said, none of them mentioned it, they instead kept on playing with the small creatures, chuckling at the young man's words. Bea kept on talking to Chan - whose puppy escaped by jumping off his arms dramatically a few seconds ago, and the others were to far engross with the puppies to care about what impulsive thoughts was said out loud by Jisung - then again it wasn't unusual for Jisung to speak his mind out loud when no one was expecting it. 

"Look Minho, isn't he cute?"

"Yeah." Minho wanted to say so much more. But he did not, he just watched his Donsaeng with fond eyes - tell him that and you might end up in the air fryer, his stare was intense - not that Jisung noticed anyway, far too engrossed for the brown puppy between his hands. He really was cute, wasn't he ?

"Y'all are fine with playing with them a bit more, we have to gather our equipments and clear out the studio."

Chan did not need to be ask twice. Why would he leave a place that made him and his boys happy when he could stay there a bit more, watching joy, happiness, cross his member's features. Even if they had a tight schedule, how could he say no to stay a few more minutes in what seemed to be the first safe space since the beginning of their tour? He was great like that. Or maybe selfish, who knows.

"Cutie. You want go home with me? Hm? Meet Bbama?" Jisung's voice was far too high to be considered 'manly', but who cares? He was in a safe haven, where no one but himself would judge him for who he was, or what he said. It was great, it was exhilarating, being there with the person he cared about so much. He was himself. And if the way that the puppy was chewing on his perfectly styled hair was a sign, he loved him. "What a cutie..." he cooed, not even a once of shame, even if Minho was snorting next to him, amused by his involuntary aegyos.

Jeongin, who was seemingly squeaking a toy, trying to lure a puppy, raised his head to look at the couple siting a few meters away from him and smiled. They were so obvious, it was painful. Actually, not far from them, another member of BuzzFeed's staff  was looking at them, a frown on his face. The situation was weird. The stare was intense, and if Jeogin could prevent an altercation or a scandal - some members of the staff had big mouths, he witnessed it more than once - he would do his best to avoid it before calling for his leader. "Bbama will think you cheated on him."

"Nah." Jisung eventually said, his inclination towards the youngest leading him farther from Minho. He smiled, a beautiful heart shape that made the Maknae's heart miss a bit - he was used to it, Jisung was cute and handsome. "Bbama's gonna be a big bro, he'll be fine." 

"Did you know dogs could be jealous?" Hyunjin piped up, eventually raising his head towards the duo and their adopted son - who made himself at home, wiggling his but to fit between Han's legs as the latter was taking off his collar, thinking about how uncomfortable this might have been for him. He, himself, in a few minutes, had become an adoptive father, his partner being Felix. After minutes, and empty promises of treats that the dogs would never even smell, they managed to snatch - or kidnap, the other brown puppy, who was now lazily chewing on Felix's shoes.

The youngest Australian's doe eyes widened comically, his gaze flickering towards Hyunjin side profile before going back to the puppy on his legs. "Seriously?" 

Hyunjin hummed, watching with tired eyes the brown puppy leaving tooth marks on Felix's shoes as the latter was only giggling and taking pictures - thanks to Seungmin, who retrieved and brought them their phone. "The stylists are gonna be mad..." he whispered, mostly to himself. But it did not went past the rapper's good earring, who frowned at the mere thought of upsetting the people who worked hard to give him this outfit.

Felix kindly and softly grabbed the puppy, taking him away from his new favourite toy with a sight. He wasn't upset. Scratch that, he was a bit upset, at himself though. He was careless and fooling around with things that wasn't his. He watched with longing eyes the puppy run toward Changbin - who was apparently playing wrestling with Maniac. Chan's eyes, who watched the scene unfold before his eyes, quickly glanced at Hyunjin. Another day, months ago, maybe even weeks, Hyunjin would have told Felix to not worry about such insignificant things, that he would buy new shoes to replace the one who were damaged, just in order to see the Australian's bright smile lit up the room. But he remained silent, avoiding to look at the blonde boy, his eyes and resolve wavering each passing minutes.

But as he was about to speak, to reassure Felix that everything would be fine, to reassure Hyunjin that he was not to blame for unconsciously hurtful demeanor, the loud and cheering voice of Bea cut him off.

"There you are!"

Chan's back was facing the person Bea was talking to so he could not exactly  gauge the situation. He was not imagining the worse, he just liked to be prepared when interacting with someone - Seungmin once called him a 'control freak', he was one to talk.

Bea seemed to have engaged in a conversation with the addition to the scene, her voice far more low and her sentences less sharp and fast. He turned around, the urge to put a face to this soft and quite deep yet feminine voice, far too strong. And he was met with a woman. An average young woman - he wasn't one to judge someone by their looks, he just likes to associate the right words to the right things, or in this case, person. She was by no mean blessed with a beauty that glued his eyes to her face, her outfits wasn't stylish, provocative, or such things, and her facial features were not some that he could stare at for hours. Yet, her eyes - tired eyes, despite not being enticing, were quite endearing. Big eyes, the shape a mix between round and almond. It definitely was the features that complimented her the most - alongside her lower lips, but it would be weird to admit that he looked at her lips.

During his quiet and discreet observation, he managed to catch onto a few words that were exchanged between the two women. Nothing valuable or worth eavesdropping, so he gave them privacy and lowered his gaze towards his boys.

"You can't adopt him."

"Why not?" the whiny voice of Jisung broke echoed in the almost empty studio and, for a second, he cringed, not realizing how loud he was.

"Excuse me..?" The voice Chan's heard a minute ago had shifted to an almost whisper, stuttering, as if transported by the breeze and vanishing in the air. If it wasn't for the emptiness of the studio, no one would have heard it. But they did, and she winced as eight pair of eyes focused on her, seemingly backing away from them. They waited eagerly, silent - for once, looking as realization was hitting her, the tip of her ears turning a shade of grey. She couldn't help but feel like she had interrupted something, even if she did have the right to be there.

She mustered a few words she could come up with in her head, but not even one left her parted lips. She was frozen on the spot, freaking out, her heart was doing back flip and the adrenalin pumping in her veins was making her hands shake. She never knew she'd meet her idols that way, and never thought about the fact that she would freak out, quite literally.

'Miroh' sniffed the air, his wet nose turning towards the young woman, and in a few seconds, too fast for Jisung to process what was happening, he was wriggling like a worm and throwing high-kick at his face. Not wanting him to hurt himself in the panic, Jisung let go of him and watched him skip towards the woman who was standing in a corner of the room, where the cameras once have been. 

Her grimacing face suddenly lighten up like Christmas light and a wide smile appeared on it as she crouched down, hands stretching toward the little being who was waddling before her. "Bébé !"

All tension had left her body, her hands were no longer shaking as she scooped him up into her embrace, getting up from the floor. Her chuckles was kept to the lowest volume, but the mere expression on her face was enough to convey her joy at whoever would look carefully.

The small puppy seemed to hold the kind of power which could make her talk, as she eventually briefly lifted her gaze from him to look at a bewildered Jisung and said, "He's not a shelter dog." As if her words weren't enough, the little dog showered her with affection and wet kisses, one that she gladly accepted - a bit self-conscious at the way they were looking at her getting her face flooded with dog slaver. Yet, she pursued, hiding her face behind the only thing that could hide her at the moment. "He's my puppy."

Embarrassment. It was the only emotion that kept him breathing at the moment. It was during one of those moments that Jisung blamed himself for being too Jisung. For being too chatty, too comfortable around others.

He got up from the floor as if it was burning, legs wobbly and unsteady, hand shaking with anxiousness. It wasn't as if it was the reaction she wanted to elicit from him, he just couldn't help it. The impression of overstepping. But he knew he did not. And it upset him even more. Like a loop. "I'm sorry, I didn't know he had an owner!" Just like she did seconds ago, he stuttered some imperceptible excuses, not daring to meet her gaze - not that he could, she was intently looking at the floor, it was far more interesting than her idols. The latter got up from the floor, te strong urge to put Jisung in a warm hug to ease the thoughts they knew were swarming in his head. Minho was standing close to him, his eyes drilling holes in the back of his head and his arm brushing against the younger one 's.

If the way he apologized in Korean disturbed her, she did not say a thing and instead look up from the oh! so interesting floor to look at his small and blushing face. She knew that look. The way he was fiddling with his fingers, avoiding her gaze - and everyone's as a matter of fact. She was like that too, it was like looking at her reflection, except that he was Han Jisung. She did not want him to feel bad over something that silly, just like she would, so she answered just as quickly, "It's fine!"

It was Stray kids turned to be surprise by the words she spoke. It was Korean - with a thick accent of something else that wasn't English. None of them uttered a word though, not wanting to ask questions to a complete stranger, not even knowing if it was the only word she knew in their native language.

At that, Jisung abruptly raised his head, eyebrows disappearing behind his bang as his eyes closed on the woman's one.

Jisung had once been a rebel. He spoke his mind like nothing or no one could prevent him from doing it, carried himself like he owned the place and made friends and enemies alike with an ease that was almost enviable. He grew up, kept a bit of that attitude, mixed it with the new Han Jisung so that he would become who he is today. An ace, one of the best rapper of the industry, a dancer that could dance with ease, a singer whose voice was praised, a composer who never lacked of new ideas for his band's future song. But nowhere along the road he thought that him, of all people, of all Stray Kids, he would feel that way - he expected that from Felix, to be honest. He never thought that he would believe in love at first sight.

I will NEVER FORGET how I was like “Damn they are trending uh? … let’s see what they got?”, I clicked on the following link and THAT WAS IT FOR ME.

though I became obsessed with that particular performance of ON, which brought me to check out ON KINETIC MANIFESTO, and got me to add ON as a favorite song on spotify, which I listened to everyday as I went to work. I still couldn't imagine the me of today. 

I then decided to listen to the whole of “Map of the Soul 7” and not gonna lie, I would have the following songs on repeat, every day:

It even got to a point where I would listen to only Filter on repeat 😬😬😬 … Mind you I still didn’t know who any of the members were by that point. Eventually I decided to take a look at the members and I started and ended with the leader 😂. We seemed to have so many things in common: English not being our first language, love for anything intellectual, reading, etc. I couldn’t get past RM. So it was MoTS + RM for me. But nothing serious yet, life still proceeded as normal.

Full into COVID, I had the worst sleeping pattern still do, but that is a different story. So I just so happened to be awake when on August 21, 2020 Dynamite premiered. I had no idea what a comeback was, or anything associated, I just watched as the seconds counted down and then watched this colour video: I WAS SHOOK 😂😂😂. I also remember very clearly that I made my very first BTS gif out of that video, which was Tae at the very end not sure where the gif I made is now but the scene was the following:

So then I got into Tae, I was like “Who is this Cali-looking handsome thing?”. In the same fashion, through reactions, music videos, interviews, RUN BTS, etc, I started being obssessed with each member at a time, for different weeks at a time 😂😂😂. Eventually having to admit that, even though given the chance I'd marry Kim Seokjin 😂😂😂, I actually loved all of them.

As life kept going on, I had a whole series of firsts (photoshoots, reactions, RUN etc) but it took me up to some time in January 2021 to realise that I indeed hadn’t spent a single day of my life since February 25, 2020 without consuming any BTS related content. OF ANY KIND AND WILLINGLY. From that realisation I then happily dove into the rabbit hole, but also came up an amazing journey of mental health recovery:

Because I can feel getting sappy, and in all honesty I want keep enjoying my ARMY birthday with a smile on my face, I’ll stop here. I guess in a way I need to thank Jimmy Fallon uh 😂😂😂?

The big story of the 300th Bugle episode AO (after Oliver) should be that it's Ahir Shah's debut, but I'm 7 minutes into it and Hari Kondabolu is already stealing the show. For anyone who doesn't know, Hari Kondabolu is an American comedian who became a Bugle regular I think because John Oliver must have recommended him, as I cannot imagine him crossing paths with Andy otherwise. His role on the podcast is to be sardonic about politics and baffled about Andy Zaltzman, and it's frequently gold (he also has several very funny comedy albums on Bandcamp, if anyone's interested in that).

He hasn't been on The Bugle in a while, and I'd forgotten that sometimes he likes to come on UK comedy podcasts and talk shit about the entire UK comedy industry. He did this in much more detail on the Comedian's Comedian podcast, I found his episode a fascinating exploration of UK vs US comedy. In that episode Hari did express admiration for various UK comedians and for their work ethic as a group, it was a nuanced conversation about pros and cons on both sides and made a great interview. That, however, is less funny than Hari just turning up on a podcast with 2 English comedians and shit talking their entire life's work, as he's done within the first seven minutes of this Bugle episode.

Andy Zaltzman: So, you two shared a flat in Edinburgh in 2011?

Hari Kondabolu: Yes, yes. Ahir was a fetus at the time. He was still in the womb, yet somehow finishing up at Cambridge. And I was a 28/29-year-old comic, hungry, excited for the future, thinking there was a career for me in the UK and beyond. And, no. No, not so much.

Andy Zaltzman: So, Ahir, are you going to Edinburgh this year?

Ahir Shah: I'm going back to the Fringe. I'm going to do a fortnight of the show I did last year.

Andy Zaltzman: Well that sounds like quite a long show. Is this the edited down version of it?

Ahir Shah: Yeah, it's like one of those Mark Watson things that takes absolutely fucking ages.

Hari Kondabolu: Has anyone ever made money at that festival? My understanding of how your system in the UK works is that you spend two weeks to a month in Edinburgh, and you lose all your money, and you owe your management company all the money for putting up the show, and then you spend a good chunk of the year paying them back. It seems like it only works because you have good social services that allow you to survive somehow.

Andy Zaltzman: That's a charmingly nostalgic view of the state of British social services, to be honest.

Ahir Shah: Yeah. The Edinburgh Festival, brought to you by the NHS.

Andy Zaltzman: Well, you know, it's just good for creativity. Most great figures from the creative arts through history were stung into action by needing to earn money. So that's the way the Edinburgh Festival works, clearly, is it makes people hungry in that regard.

Hari Kondabolu: I really do love watching a bunch of half-finished hours of comedy that should have probably taken a year or two more to be polished and perfect, but of course the drive for having a new hour every year is so important. And then making the full hour of comedy brilliant, and then not recording it, and sharing it with the world. Therefore no one has ever really seen it other than a few people in your own country. It's a brilliant strategy.

Andy Zaltzman: It's a great strategy, yeah.

Ahir Shah: I'm feeling really intensely patriotic at the moment, after all of these - it's like, you leave our festival alone, okay? You visited one time. You visited one time. It doesn't even count.

Hari Kondabolu: I did visit one time.

Andy Zaltzman: Well maybe we should take up the New York system of just doing the same seven minutes for twenty-five years, and ending up bitter at why fame has passed you by.

I fully agree about everything you said, especially the Brian/Gale, Justin/Randy thing. I wish they did more interviews of some kind because hearing them talk about anything, not just qaf, is so interesting and it’s very cool to hear their thoughts about whatever they want to discuss. Which is why I especially loved that Gale interview out of the box, even though I believe back then it was taken down because it was accidentally posted or something. Anyway, I love that interview so much and rewatch it way too many times. But it’s so intriguing to hear his thoughts and just his answers about everything, especially the stuff concerning lgbt community and just overall life outside the qaf show, (which btw I remember being horrified when he talked about fans interrupting his date.) I think that's the best Gale interview to hear his full acting journey and snippets of his life, is just fascinating it really draws you in to hear him talk even if you weren't a fan of qaf. Gosh that was so mortifying I cannot believe there are people out there even now, who think just because they see an actor on their television screens that grants them access to them in real life and how they cannot distinguish between the actor and the acting persona, and speculation on their sexuality. It's hideous behaviour. No wonder he and Randy were fiercely private they had a rough time of it, but had each other to lean on for support I suppose.

I massively mourn the lack of Gale/Randy joint interviews I needed to see their quirky dynamic in full flow, how could you deny me universe? :(

Oh how I wish Gale did more mainstream television work, though he seems to be a true theatre kid at heart because I'd love to see him on my screen again. I even put myself through watching that terrible gay murder mystery film last year where he basically played a budget version of Brian Kinney (why gale why? it was the money) to be fair he was barely in it so I was grateful.

On the English version of the Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker DVD that I have, it has 3 pieces of bonus content; a studio tour, some production art that you can flip through, and “Backstage Pass”, which is a series of interviews with different devs about DA & Dawn of the Seeker. the length of the Backstage portion on the DVD that I have is ~14 mins. I found on YouTube however a video which is described by the uploader as an upload of part of the Backstage stuff from the DVD that is ~15.5 mins long and clearly incomplete as when it ends it cuts off as the title card of the next interview portion flashes onscreen. that video’s description says that there’s ~40 minutes of extra content, and it seems to be the case as parts of the video contain content from these interviews that aren’t on my copy of the DVD. anyone know what’s going on here? was there 2 editions of the DVD or something and 2 different cuts/versions of the Backstage stuff, one longer than the other? 🤔

Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas Masterpost (Toe/Jaylor)

Before dating (May 2008)

We start with the Taylor lookalike

In May 2008 the Jonas Brothers are filming their music video for Burnin’ Up [x]. Joe’s love interest in it is played by a blonde girl who looks quite a bit (and she’s also styled) like Taylor Swift, for reference, this is the music video that has Selena Gomez as Nick Jonas’ love interest.

As far as we know they hadn’t even met so we don’t know exactly what this was supposed to mean, maybe Joe had a crush on Taylor or maybe it’s a coincidence.

We do know that Nick and Selena were dating when this was filmed and that by the time the MV was released (July 4th, 2008) Joe and Taylor were officially dating.

Toe is alive! (July 2008 – September 2008)

On Tour

Fans claim to have seen Taylor around the tour in early July, which matches with Taylor’s lyrics in "Last Kiss".

On July 14th, Taylor and The Jonas Brothers perform “Should’ve Said No”[x] from her debut album, and this performance now forever exists in their 3D movie (a classic), a cute fact is that some fans have said that Taylor tripped when she first came out, so they had to repeat it for the movie.

On July 20th Joe flies to Wyoming to watch Taylor opening up for Rascal Flatts, and they flew back and she was spotted at the Omaha show.

She’s seen in a couple shows more and she joins the stage again for their Madison Square Garden shows in August [x]. They sing “Even now just looking at you feels wrong”.

They’re together but they’re not together.

For more context, we must remember that Taylor was a very new artist from a small label and The Jonas were pretty much at their peak and Disney’s biggest act, and they were managed like crazy and could never even think about being seen with someone in a romantic way. Any rumors were denied so fast, and Disney did the absolute most to keep it secret. So according to everyone they were just good friends, at the time both Taylor and Selena were annoyed by all the secrecy.

Now back to the timeline:

Taylor is backstage of the tour A LOT for the next couple of weeks right next to the other not-girlfriends Selena and Danielle.

She films a cameo for the “Love Is on Its Way” [x] video for the concert in New York. She was said to be only interested in hanging out with Joe and they were seen hugging *gasp* I know it doesn’t seem like much now but back then this was the hottest gossip and again the Jonas were not supposed to breathe near any human of the opposite gender.

Taylor and the Jonas were staying at the same hotel a bunch of rumors ensued, but I will not talk about the whole Olympics and Toe locking themselves in a room at midnight thing. If it’s real, we really needed to touch some grass and stop staying outside of people's rooms all night.

On August 17th Joe goes to Ryan Seacrest's show and denied that Taylor is his girlfriend in the best way a corporation like Disney can train you to deny something that’s true. Saying Taylor is “a great girl and I think anybody would be lucky to date her. I think anybody would love to go on a date with her.”

And Taylor tells People Magazine “He’s an amazing guy and anybody would be lucky to be dating him” Cinematic parallels.

Taylor is spotted in the back (in a mirror) of one of the Jonas youtube videos [x]. Basically, we all knew they were together.

The Central Park date (August 28th)

Now if you were a fan of either the Jonas Brothers, Selena, or Taylor you know this next part and it the iconic triple date of Central Park.

Again, this is kind of famous at this point and Selena has been quoted saying how awful it was because the boys were not allowed to be seen with them so they all went to Central Park (Selena’s first time in Central Park) and Taylor and Selena walked about 20 feet of distance from the guys so nobody would think they were together but we all already knew because it wasn’t like they were that good at hiding it and there are pictures of them together that night (the clownery of it all).

These backstage tour adventures are the reason Taylor and Selena are friends today and in Selena’s own words the best thing to come out of those relationships.

VMAs (September 2008)

With how many pictures of them together that night [x] [x] [x] exist you would think they had gone together as a couple but no just two besties! The 2008 VMAs are so the show where Russell Brand mocks the Jonas Brothers and their purity rings and Taylor publicly defends them.

Toe seems happy for the rest of September but as we know now the end is near.

The Break-Up (October 2008)

Social Media was different back then and Taylor did what every teen girl with a broken heart did in 2008 and she went to myspace with an edited post to make a statement about the Toe current situation.

Post-Breakup

The 27 seconds Joe Jonas will regret for the rest of his life.

Taylor went on Ellen and I don’t even think I need to say much this interview is THAT iconic she sat on that couch and told the world exactly how Joe had broken her heart in the following two quotes:

“There’s one that’s about that guy, but…that guy’s not in my life anymore unfortunately. That guy…that’s an ouch.”

“I’m not even gonna be able to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18…it was like 27 seconds, that’s got to be a record.” [x]

She also went on Ryan Seacrest’s and when asked about the perfect guy she saw an opportunity and took it, saying “I used to always say sense of humor, but I think that it’s important to have the same kind of sense of humor. I have a really dry, sarcastic sense of humor and if somebody doesn’t think that my sense of humor is funny, then that’s not something that is good. Um, so sometimes you know, that can be a wrong match. If they’re not allowed to go in public with me, that’s sort of an issue too.” [x]

Bonus the amazing youtube video Taylor posted with Joe’s Camp Rock doll and how he comes with his own phone to break up with other dolls [x]. Taylor eventually went full out and cited Camilla Belle (then girlfriend of Joe) as the reason for the breakup. And you know someone at Disney’s PR office wanted to die when this was going down.

So finally, Joe was forced to acknowledge the whole situation with a Myspace post:

"I never cheated on a girlfriend. It might make someone feel better to assume or imply I have been unfaithful, but it is simply not true. Maybe there were reasons for a breakup. Maybe the heart moved on. Perhaps feelings changed. I am truly saddened that anything would potentially cause you to think less of me. For those who have expressed concern over the "27 second” phone call. I called to discuss feelings with the other person. Those feelings were obviously not well received. I did not end the conversation. Someone else did. Phone calls can only last as long as the person on the other end of the line is willing to talk. “

Forever & Always

Now this song is known as THE Toe song and it was born out of the end of the relationship when she felt Joe was getting distant, but she couldn’t do anything to help it, it was made really late into the production of Fearless so she had to rush to finish it in time (so no other breakup songs are about Joe in the original album).

In the 2009 Grammy's Taylor and Miley (insert The Ex-Girlfriends Club Theory here) performed Fifteen (obviously not about Joe) and the Jonas were in the audience. I believe this is probably around the time Taylor writes Mr. Perfectly Fine and You All Over Me, which we know get to have thanks to Fearless (Taylor’s Version) 13 years later.

In November of 2009, she also goes to SNL and mocks Joe in her monologue. To make things even more dramatic and very awkward The Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, and Taylor Swift spent NYE together watching the ball drop on TV and this was probably not how they wanted to start their years. [x] [x] [x] and a video [x]

Now let’s discussed some of the songs that came out at the time. The Jonas response to Forever & Always was Much Better. Nick described it as a song that was very personal to Joe and Joe went on to say that it was based on his very interesting year. They also at some point wanted to pretend the song was about their love for their fans but come on. Joe also changed the lyrics from ‘superstar’ to ‘country star’ and later changed it to ‘movie stars’ when he broke up with Camilla who is the ‘Much Better’ girl from the song.

She’s spoken about her regret for this song since then and hasn’t played it in years and Camilla seems to be ok we never forgiving her for it [x] [x]. Arriving at the Federal building and pulling in to the underground car park, I showed my credentials to the guard, who opened the gate to let me in. I found a park, pulled in and sat there for a minute. My watch said 9:18. Finished my coffee, put the empty cup back in to the cup holder and headed for the lift.

This is a completely different building to the one that I work in, so it was a little tricky trying to navigate my way around. On the phone, Agent Hotchner had said 'Sixth floor, right from the elevator and down the hall', so that's where I headed.

Arriving on the sixth floor, I looked at my watch, 9:20, perfect. I headed down the hall, coming to a glass door that had "Behavioural Analysis Unit Quantico" written in a big circle on the front. The excitement rushing through me was barely supressable as I pushed through the doors.

I was met by a beautiful, petite blonde lady, whose smile was contagious and welcoming.

"Hi there, you must me y/n, for the interview. I'm Jennifer, but everyone calls me JJ. Hotch's office is right this way." She turned, and I followed.

She was so sweet showing me around the bullpen and surrounding rooms. We walked along an elevated path around the bullpen, desks in a cluster right in the middle of it all. We reached a door, 'Specialist Supervisory Agent Hotchner' written on the name badge stuck to the door. JJ knocked on the door,

"Come in." Called a deep stern voice from the other side of the door.

JJ opened the door, introduced me to 'Hotch', gave me a smile and left.

"Please sit." he motioned to the chair on the opposite side of the desk from him, his head never lifting from the file in his hands. His shoulders broad, covered a dark blue almost black blazer, his short black, gelled out of his face. He finally looked up as I sat, his face every bit as serious as his voice.

"Why did you apply to transfer for the BAU?" the question very serious, with just a hint of curiosity.

"I want to know what goes on inside people's minds when they decide they're going to commit the crimes that they do. It is always on my mind, why do people do the things they do? I want to understand better. Understand others better, while becoming a better, more confident version of myself." I had to restrain myself from rambling, not wanting to ruin the interview.

"You graduated Highschool at 14, you've got BA's in psychology, physiology and criminology. PHD's in mathematics, chemistry and Neuroscience - obtained recently." he looked up from the piece of paper in his hand, "you've worked hard to be where you're at. Keep working hard like that and we won't have any problems." The way his eyes were string at me, was intimidating to say the least.

"Yes Sir." I confirmed. He stood up, putting his hand out toward me, I stood and took his hand in mine, shaking it firmly.

"The transfer has already been done. We have meetings every morning at ten sharp, in the conference room. If you've nowhere better to be today, I'd like to get started right away." He more so told me rather than asked.

"Of course. I came ready." He seemed pleased by this. He walked around the desk and toward the door, looking back briefly to make sure I was following and I didn't miss a beat.

He walked me in to a the room adjacent his own, sat me at the round table and left. I checked my watch 9:50. I breathed out quite deeply, almost in relief as a smile briefed my lips. I pushed myself so hard to be here, I was so excited to finally be here.

Soon enough, the room was filling with people who took their own seats, Around the table. I watched as JJ walked in, giving me the 'thumbs up' gesture with a smile on her face. She came over to me, asking how everything went, telling me she out in a good word because I reminded her of someone from the team.

I hadn't even realised that the room had filled until I heard a familiar voice come from behind me,

"I knew our paths would cross again," Derek called, looking straight at me with the biggest smirk on his face, "and I was right." He finished, sitting down with a wink.

"Derek! You can't be telling me that you already know our newest member before she's even started!" A heavier blonde lady called out, swimming almost jealous that her co worker had a lady friend.

"Its not like that, mama," he waved her down, "Spencer and I met her while on our coffee run this morning." I looked over and recognised those brown curls from the coffee shop.

"Spencer?" I questioned, looking at him.

"Dr. Spencer Reid." he looked straight at me as he spoke, confirming he was Reid AND Spencer and also a doctor. I nodded in understanding, satisfied that JJ's words to Hotch about me reminding her of someone was THIS someone.

I was introduced to the rest of the team, Penelope Garcia being the jealous sounding lady from just before, she's actually so sweet and full is sass. Emily Prentiss, another beautiful lady with shoulder length black hair, dark brown eyes and almost perfect porcelain coloured skin. Rossi, an older Italian man, whose manner was composed and parental.

Hotch, as I've been introduced to him by others, told us that we had a case. Between Hotch and JJ, it was clear that my first day was going to be interesting.

11 - The 100th episode for so many reasons, the nostalgic lookback at previous characters, Klaroline finally getting it on, a Mebekah reunion and lots of Katherine 👑

12 - He is your first love, I intend to be your last 💖 Klaroline was all kinds of epic and how poetic is it that she wound up being his last love💔

13 - Caroline singing at her mothers funeral 💔

14 - Elena, I know she went through alot but who didn't in the TVDverse, she was the victim and stayed within that role from beginning to end and god was she depressing to watch. She was also largely hypocritical with her judgements over things she too was guilty off 🙄 the fact I loathe her and love Katherine shows the incredible acting range of Nina Dobrev though 💖

15 - Stefan, he is like Angel with the Angelus edge, id say the male elena but that would be harsh as he didnt piss me off nearly as much 😂 he was alright I suppose I just didnt care for him that much, if he died early I'd have been like meh! I couldnt buy evil stefan either instead it made me cringe which is weird because Paul Wesley plays unhinged so well in Tell me a story...oh and also Stefan killed Enzo, not once but twice and he can only blame the humanity switch for one of those kills 😡

16 - i did ship Delena till they got together and lost all their magic, i never shipped Stelena but they did suit each other better than Delena or the very ill advised Steroline which should have stayed a friendship! Bonnie and Jeremy made absolute no sense and had zero chemistry so on those grounds id say those two or Steroline, Steroline itches me up the wrong way the most tbf.

17 - Elena and Caroline, Caroline was the better friend hands down for both Bonnie and Elena but Elena always seemed harsher to Caroline and yet couldnt handle it when Caroline gave her tough love back especially over Delena which tbh Caroline was right....IMO anyways.

18 - I cannot say Candice, Nina, Kat or Claire are anything but amazing actresses so I would never say any of them...maybe the actress who played Liv Parker, she was always kind of one note to me although not terrible but nowhere near as good as the others....I could probably later think of someone else but for now I'll go with her.

19 - Zach Roerig, a typical answer from fans I've noticed but he was just so blah for 8 full seasons I totally get why Im not alone here...also so far him and Steven McQueen are the only ones from TVD to appear in Legacies...Jeremy's cameo i didnt mind, Matts however...like when is he going to die and stay dead already? Sorry matt fans 😂

20 - A good chunk of episodes in season 7, didnt like Elena but didn't like TVD without Elena...would've loved the actress to stay on and either play another role or make Katherine come back preferably 🤩

21 - Most of them I started liking then hating, or hating to liking then back to hating 😂 I dont think I hated anyone from beginning then loved them by the end so ill just give a love to hate, Alaric...I liked him in early seasons but thought he came to a natural end when he died...from 6 onwards after he came back he lost any appeal and felt like he was just there to have another dead ex, then to cockblock Steroline which tbf was a good deed but still didnt revive him 🤣 and I full out despise him in Legacies but I'll dig deeper into that come a Legacies themed version of this challenge 😂

22 - Damon wins hands down here, loved him in the pilot, love turned to like as the show went on and then Delena happened and completely destroyed his chracter, Bamon gave him a much needed revival but Elena soon dragged him down once more...his live for her was obsessive to me, unhealthy and toxic and he couldnt cope without it. BAMON would've fixed all this IMO

23 - Okay stick with me here as this one has multiple answers for me...I'd have rathered Caroline or Bonnie as the main character alongside the salvatores than Elena so thats answer one. Answer two would be I'd have loved Katherine to have been the mainstay doppelganger instead of Elena. Answer three would be more flashbacks of Lexi and her life away from the Salvatores would have been interesting. Last answer, Rebekah should have been in more episodes both on this and TO but I'll probs get more into that when I do TO.

24 - The romances, the vampires, the villains and the aesthetic of Mystic Falls 😍 if you follow my other pages you know obsessed im obsessed with the supernatural genre 🥰

25 - Too much time centred around Delena and Stelena, which I know was the main story of this show their love triangle but it didnt have to be...

27 - Heres one so this post isnt all bashing poor Elena 🤣 i love when Elena and Stefan wind up drinking in that bar together having a good time as friends...honestly wouldnt habe minded more scenes centered on this friendship.

28 - Klaroline getting together in the woods and/or the Klaroline moment in the last episode where he donates money to the boarding school...tbh any Klaroline moment 💖

29 - Liz's death and funeral, my heart breaks for Caroline everytime and Damon too, loved Liz and Damon's friendship 💔

30 - Almost all Lily Salvatore scenes, the worst mother alongside Esther Mikaelson....their deaths make me so happy every single time and I will never apologise for that 🤣

Thanks for talking to me and understanding and everything nice you said. I think Folklore is a great first step to this kind of songwriting. I dont know if that's something she wants right now or for the next album. A lot of people say they want a Folklore part 2 but she never does the same thing twice. In the future, I think she could write an amazing musical..either with an album of hers that's a full story eventually or an awesome jukebox musical. She worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber so I can dream lol. Do you think a full album with a somewhat connected story would be successful tho? Also What do you think about some people saying that something is off with Taylor? They were saying this cuz she didnt say anything about Biden winning the election. yeah i think a musical written by her would be amazing! andrew lloyd webber actually said himself that she could write a great musical so we can hope! i think that kind of album would be maybe less commercially successful (especially in the era of streaming and people listening to individual songs more than albums as a whole) but she’s definitely at the stage in her career where she can go a bit more out there creatively without necessarily worrying about sucess.

honestly i’m not worried about taylor either, she’s said herself she’s enjoying having a more private life and it’s healthy sometimes to take some time being less active on social media. she’s still popping up with various little videos for different awards/events so it’s not like she’s gone into full hiding. i have no idea what the capitol one easter eggs are hinting at but knowing taylor i’m sure it’s something!

i really liked the interview, it was nice to get a bit more insight into the process that led to folklore and just like where she’s at now! i read rebecca in the summer and loved it so i recommend, i think as far as classics go it’s pretty easily readable and doesn’t feel really outdated (and i love that taylor also read it in lockdown!). writing the topline means she wrote the lyrics whereas aaron dessner wrote the music, so he would send her an instrumental and she’d add the lyrics on top (i think with jack it’s usually a bit more collaborative in terms of lyrics/production but i’m not sure if that’s the same with folklore). i think she probably did it as a way to sort of experiment with a different type of genre and sort of try a different way of writing. i know that it was the same with cruel summer, where jack and st vincent wrote the track then taylor wrote the lyrics/melody on top. that sounds like such a good concept! i think it would be cool for her to revisit the fairytale type vibes from some of her earlier songs from like a more grown up perspective.

hi i’m back! yes i hope things start turning around for Armie next year. i’ve been a fan of his for a while. something that i’ve noticed is that when it comes to sexual assault allegations in the me too era, former cast & crew members from past projects have their own stories of how the perpetrator behaved poorly. the people that Armie has worked and crossed paths with in the industry have only spoken highly of him. Josh Duhamel replaced him in a movie and seemed apologetic! towards Armie and said he was a great guy. Dakota Johnson faced criticism for defending him. There are often people who defend those who have committed sexual assault, however, no one who personally knew Armie - other than his wife who he is divorcing - believed these claims. It’s also interesting that his wife cites their date of separation later than he does. 10 years gives her more money if i’m not mistaken. i hope the divorce stuff is settled soon so he can then take official legal steps to prove these allegations false. he has the best lawyers so fingers crossed. i can talk so much about this! anyways, i’m SO excited for death on the nile. Armie and Gal are going to be great.

i'm in the same boat! i've also been a fan of his for a while now. at least, before CMBYN came out, which i know is how he gained a lot of the fans he has now. i became a fan with the man from uncle & the social network, though i did watch both movies a few years after they initially came out. he did a great job in both and, to me, seemed like a really nice guy behind-the-scenes as well.

yeah, you have a point there. i don't remember hearing josh duhamel's comments but i believe i did see dakota johnson's, 'cause i vaguely remember her getting backlash for defending him. or seeming to, at least. i don't think it's really a defense to say that you personally had a good experience with someone. i mean, it does seem like you're taking a side, but it's more like saying, "oh, i'm surprised by the accusations".

i definitely have been curious to know what some of armie's celeb friends think about the whole situation. speaking of CMBYN, i know timothee chalamet answered a question about him for an interview recently. his answer was vague but i think it was telling that he'd take the question at all bc i believe in interviews, the questions tend to be approved ahead of time. so obviously he wanted to address the situation even without openly showing his support for armie.

but i'm glad it seems like even his non-famous friends don't believe the claims either. i'm still surprised how quickly people online were to believe them when those instagram DM screencaps could have easily been photoshopped. like, it's one thing with the ansel elgort stuff bc people were sharing photos of their screens with text exchanges and such so those seem more real, but the armie stuff? i mean, it's not just bc of how wild the allegations are. photoshop is really good now. you know how easily we fall for fake tweet or headline screenshots?

oh of course his wife would cite the separation later if it gets her more money. i feel she's kinda at the center of all this bc it's obviously her gain if armie's empire comes crashing down. she'd win more in the divorce, not just monetarily but regarding custody of the kids too.

yeah, i guess both trials can't really go on at the same time, can they? the divorce and the allegation stuff, i mean. or at least it'd be too much of a headache if they did. i'd like the divorce done soon too, but i wonder if elizabeth will use the allegation situation in the divorce to, as i implied, argue for more money or full custody of the kids. (at least it seems pretty clear now that armie's time in therapy or rehab or whatever sort of help he got for his substance issues was only for a few months so she can't still hold that over his head.)

In my version, the show diverges shortly after Lucy is manipulated into confessing her feelings for Mina, both to Mina herself and to her parents. Her parents react horribly to what Lucy confesses about her feelings for women, and have her committed to the facility run by Mina’s father.

Dr. Murray is kind, and progressive for his time. After the requisite intake interview, he determines that Lucy isn’t mad at all. When Mina comes to him, panicked upon finding out what had happened to her friend, he tells her that Lucy’s feelings are as natural as the love between a man and a woman. It is not an illness, or a psychosis.

(As an aside, Dr. Murray remarks how brave Lucy must have been to confess the truth to her family-- or anyone, for that matter, given how averse society is to anything that is different. At that, Mina starts to feel badly at how she’d reacted.)

Despite nothing being wrong with her, Dr. Murray lets her remain in his facility, where she is treated well and Mina visits everyday. They start to rebuild their friendship, and heal from their recent rift, but Lucy’s family starts getting impatient when little progress is made. Despite Dr. Murray’s warnings that her parents likely will not accept her homosexuality, Lucy refuses to pretend otherwise, refuses to conform. Bolstered by what Lady Jayne had said to her/made her feel, and with Mina’s renewed faith in her, she staunchly refuses to get married asap as her father demands.

Dr. Murray tries to explain to Lucy’s parents, but they refuse to believe their daughter is healthy. After a time, when they realize Mina has been visiting so often, they wonder whether Lucy’s friendship with Mina is what “corrupted” her. They remove Lucy from the Murrays’ care and admit her to another, less savory institution.

The new facility is cold, and dark-- visiting hours are shorter, and farther between. Mina tries to visit as often as she can, but she’s often restricted from doing so-- according to the people who turn her away, Lucy is often ill, or has refused visitors herself, or lost privileges for reasons unknown.

The few times Mina does get to visit her, Lucy seems less and less like herself. She loses her vivacity, and says very little. She grows pale and withdrawn, and during their final visit, Lucy breaks down and confesses her fear of remaining in that facility even one more day, begs for Mina’s help. Mina vows to act, even as the orderlies come to end their visit early.

Mina immediately goes to Jonathan for help. She shares everything, from the change in Lucy to the way the asylum has restricted their visitation, to the bruises she’s noticed on Lucy’s wrists and the orderly she recognized who used to work for her father (and was fired for being too rough with the patients). Jonathan listens to it all, and then takes Mina by the hand and tells her there’s nothing they can do.

Lucy is unmarried, he reminds her, and as such her care is at the discretion of her family.

Horrified by his lack of compassion, Mina runs to Alexander. He wastes no time in taking action-- Mina almost has to run to catch up as he returns with her to the asylum to break Lucy out that night. They find her, drugged and with a new bruise staining her cheek. Ignoring the protests of the nurses, then the orderlies, and then the head administrator, Alexander has his man Renfield scoop Lucy up and carry her to their carriage.

They install Lucy in one of the many spare rooms in Alexander’s home, and Mina stays with her as she recovers. When Jonathan comes to find Mina, she sends him away. His lack of compassion that afternoon has made her seriously reconsider their engagement, and for now, her priority is Lucy. She will contact him when she is ready.

Though Lucy’s health returns, her spirit remains tempered by her ordeal. She doesn’t speak much, about anything, though she is gracious and grateful for Mina’s and Alexander’s help. When Lucy’s father learns what happens and comes looking for Lucy, Alexander heads him off at the door. Lucy clings to Mina and listens as her father’s bellow carries down the corridor: Lucy is no longer welcome in their home. The Westenras have no daughter.

Eventually Lady Jayne learns what happened. She calls on Lucy, both out of guilt and in genuine concern. To her surprise, when Lucy harbors no anger for Jayne’s role in what happened to her. Lucy instead speaks at length for the first time, and confesses that while she knows Jayne manipulated her for reasons she can’t discern, Lucy is still grateful to her.

Whatever Jayne’s reasons for manipulating Lucy that day, their time together helped Lucy come to terms with who she was. She had plenty of chances to earn her freedom-- she could have denounced her nature, claimed to have been mistaken, gone home and married her current suitor posthaste. But because Jayne had validated her feelings for Mina, shown her the life she could have, and what true happiness might look like, Lucy remained true to herself and refused to be shackled to a life of being nothing more than a man’s wife.

Jayne regrets her part in what happened. But as Lucy speaks, calm and determined and resolute in the choices she made for herself, Jayne sees a spark of something familiar. She offers to teach Lucy how to live independently, how to fight, and live without answering to any man.

Lucy agrees, without hesitation.

She leaves with Jayne that afternoon, and goes to stay with her. As Mina tries to reconcile her failing engagement with Harker and address the strange attraction she feels for Alexander, Lucy learns the way of the hunter. Somewhere between throwing her first punch and holding her first crossbow, the fog of trauma lifts, and in its wake Lucy finds a deep, abiding anger. It lends her an aggression that makes her a quick study, and the moment Jayne treats her as a capable student (and not just as a pretty face, as everyone else in her life has ever done), Lucy begins to flourish.

The next time she and Mina meet, Mina instantly notices the change in her. Lucy has never been demure, but she now carries herself with a new self-assuredness, no longer reaching for the world but letting it to come to her. Her smiles come less easy now, but her charm still oozes from her, in the way she carries herself, in her confidence, and the way she speaks expecting to be heard. Most notably changed is the sharp gleam in her eye, just spoiling for a fight.

And fight she does. She shadows Jayne on her nightly prowls, first as an observer and then an active participant. They make a good team, and before long they are nearly equals, close friends and sometimes lovers (though never romantic partners). One night, however, one of their vampiric opponents throws Lucy off-kilter-- the orderly who had once worked for Mina’s father, turned only a short time ago. He gets away in the moment of Lucy’s hesitation, but it gives them the unexpected chance to follow him back to his lair…

Which turns out to be the very asylum Mina had helped Lucy escape. The place is crawling with vamps, mingling with innocent patients. With the help of other hunters, they clear out the place, sneaking the human patients out to the safety of Dr. Murray’s facility, while sealing the inhuman occupants inside. They torch the entire building, and Lucy watches with Lady Jayne at her side as vampires scream and perish within.

They don’t save everyone. Some of the recent turns had been patients-- people Lucy had met during her brief stay. While she would hesitate to call them friends, they were victims, and Lucy’s empathy extends to them readily. She resents that they were so vulnerable, that no one noticed that evil had taken hold in that building long before the vampires came. Anger coils inside her, hot and volatile.

The Hunters officially accept Lucy into their ranks that night, and share what their true purpose had been, when they allied with the Order of the Dragon centuries ago. So with a belly full of righteous anger and the full might of her fellow Hunters at her disposal, Lucy Westenra sets her sights on Dracula.

A/N: This was my first blush story arc, and having spent time tidying it up for blog purposes, I’m now wondering whether the asylum bit is necessary. I mean, it’s certainly not outside the realm of historical realism, but I’m asking myself whether another lesbian being treated poorly is the story we need to see, so that part is open to change. 

The important part is that instead of Jayne being a horrendous bitch and then dying, she takes baby-lesbian Lucy under her wing and teaches her to spit in the face of contemporary convention by being a kick ass Huntress. It also brings Lucy back into the Dracula arc again, on her own terms.
