The Matrix (1999)

If all movies belong somewhere on a spectrum between “Confrontational” and “Wish Fulfilment”, then The Matrix is so far on the side of power fantasies it circles back around to say something about the oppressive system that reality can be. Unmistakably 1999, extremely stylish and teeming with groundbreaking special effects, it's got dozens of quotable lines, moments, characters and action scenes. This is a movie everyone should see at least once.

Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) is a computer programmer who moonlights as the hacker “Neo”. When he encounters the legendary Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) online, he becomes privy to a dark secret about our world. Joining a small band of rebels and told by their leader Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) that he is the prophecyzed hero they’ve been waiting for, Neo might be the only one who can save humanity from the shackles of “The Matrix” and the hidden oppressors that have us all in an elaborate cage.

Today, The Matrix is the first part of a franchise that includes several sequels, an animated anthology film, video games, and more. You probably know the film’s big secret: although initially, the film looks like it’s taking place in 1999 New York, that's a lie. This story is set at an unknown point in the future in which humanity has been enslaved. After losing the war between man and machine, everyone alive is imprisoned in a virtual world, unaware that everything around them is nothing more than signals fed through their brains. Meanwhile, their real bodies are fed intravenously and the electrical currents and heat our bodies generate power our mechanical oppressors. Woah. There’s no way you would’ve seen that coming in 1999. Even today, it’s a great premise that opens up a world of insane possibilities the film is eager to engage with when it isn't putting its focus on the action.

You see, Neo, Trinity, Morpheus, Cypher (Joe Pantoliano) and the others know the truth - they’ve chosen the red pill and have had their eyes opened. They know the real world isn’t real at all. This allows them to “cheat” at reality. The mechanical ports in their skulls (a great bit of skin-crawling cyberpunk horror) allow them to instantly upload knowledge into their minds. One moment you’re a regular pale-faced keyboard operator. The next, you’re a superhero with an unparalelled mastery of every martial arts known to man. Is there a more fulfilling fantasy? Our heroes instantly stand out from a crowd thanks to their impossibly cool long leather coats and dark sunglasses. They effortlessly blow away their opponents with weapons they conjure out of thin air (one of the perks of living in a digital world is that you can hack it) and when the bullets run out, they pull off the kinds of punches and kicks only possible in a video game.

The Matrix excels at delivering entertaining sights and sounds, at showing the audience what it wants to see. Though unassuming, “Neo” is “the One”, a human prophesied to free humankind from the big machine that’s got us all living mundane lives. At one point or another (probably in our teenage years) we've all thought “I wish someone would tell me I'm special”. The Wachowskis have taken our deepest desires and made them physical. Neo and his brothers-in-arms look impossibly cool, they can do things no one else possibly could. They’ve woken up from the dream. Now, societal norms and rules they only followed out of obligation no longer apply. Even the laws of gravity start backing off. People dodge bullets. Their jumps, punches and kicks are shot in glorious stop-motion, allowing us to see how impossibly well-choreographed and ferocious they are. If, by the end of the movie, the hero doesn’t get the girl, I’ll eat my hat.

Perfectly embodying the oppressive simulated reality prison these rebels are fighting against is Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith. He’s the kind of bad guy you can never forget. He's not a man. He's literally part of the system; a program within the Matrix that’s allowed to bend the rules of physics so he can squash any rebellion. It’s clear the actor is having the time of his life with this character. He’s cartoonish in a way but it works because the whole film is exaggerated. It wouldn't have been enough for him to have been nasty; he needed to be larger than life and smug too.

It doesn’t take long for The Matrix to get going and once the energy starts to crackle, you get non-stop bolts of lightning directly into your eyes. Is the movie deep, or is it just a steady flow of would-be religious and philosophical themes? It doesn’t matter. The expertly choreographed action scenes and dazzling special effects keep things moving. In other circumstances, the characters (who range from well-developed to mere archetypes) would feel like tools used to segway us from one scene to the next but something about the entire package makes you believe this is everything the Wachowskis have always wanted to show, fully realized. It’s a dream come true, and you can’t wait to see what’s next. (On Blu-ray, January 1, 2022)

Random-Mailbox's Favorite Sailor Moon Fics - Week 16 - Christmas Part 2

When working on the stories to include in this week’s post, the list kept growing, and growing… and growing. And even though I try my best to not have giant posts, this one will be an exception. @riverlethe made an excellent suggestion of capping it at 12, to use “Twelve Days of Christmas” song as my loose cultural inspiration. So here is how we got to the final number.

This is another absolutely wonderful reveals story from @lyraterra but with a Holiday twist.

NOMU ! Katsuki Bakugo headcanons — ORIGIN

It' s not that detailed bc hard lol so any whump-related things , character death and torture have been only mentioned they are not descriptive . Also this au does not exactly follow through the original plot of the anime . It' s an alternative plot for it to fit and does not end up with the animes ending bc neo has yet to finish it lol .

So when Kat got kidnapped the heroes or the students couldn't rescue him. Instead he was accidentally killed during the raid because of trying to fight the villains and getting in front of a attacking hero. He bled out pretty much during the Kamino incident and when the LOV. Ended where they ended he was beyond recovering state.

Due to the potential and powerful quirk that Katsuki possesses as a villain and an asset he was instead brought to the lab. Now since AFO has been defeated, i think there could be a more artificial version of doing what he could. Like thinking more sci-fi type shit with a way of securing stolen quirks into something and then being able to give them as if they fuse into the body, bloodstream, DNA and mind.

But it's a lot more painful since it takes a lot of time and the character would need to be alive for it bc research. Also bc they want to make sure that he actually lives, even if it's barely so to see how it changes him.

Personally don't really like the do them like Kurogiri was done type of nomu when it comes to Nomu AUs lol so doing something different.

I think they could have someone with a revival quirk revive katsuki to a state he'd be alive enough to take care for a few weeks. So he just doesn't recollapse and die during the 'operation ' of exposing new quirks to his weak body. ( They still keep him weak and with quirk dampening collar bc they don't want him to try an escape any way possible lol. )

During the meek recovery time they give him which he is in agony and barely councious. The doctor, Kyudai, decides upon what he wishes to experiment with. Instead of going straight with how Kurogiri was made he ends up trying something more animalistic and shapeshifty, feral type ( iykyk ) even.

Having picked out the quirks from the storage of quirks he has to work with. It's been about three weeks and Kats still in pain but doing so much better than before at least. They've been starting the preparation of the operation already and he has no idea what's exactly going on.

So the only minus would be that he's stuck in a hospital bed, like literally restrained against it bc every now and then when staff came to check on him he would unapologetically trash around and try to attack them so they had to sedate him and made him rather delirious. They even muzzled him as well bc the man is loud and i mean L O U D even if heavily sedated.

He's most likely going to fight them every change and energy surge he gets even if sedated, he's stubborn and knows what's going on is very wrong even if he has no clue what's going on. So defiant smh giving the staff such a hard time /j .

Let's say bc of his fighting the staff he almost made his way to the skies again. His state was corrected tho, so the operation they had prepared him to undergo was successfull.

He was then caged up and locked away for four months before anything really happened. They monitored his state which was format for full two months. He kinda just fell into a coma for a sec.

But forcing him out if it with electric shocks as a experiment was successful. He awoke in pain and the first thing they got out of him was a blood curling scream of agony. His whole body welt like it was on fire and it went on for the rest of two months

His skin went from it's original colour to ashy black and had a weird soft leathery texture to it. His form changed to resemble a four legged snake, like an oriental dragon but not quite like it, with a black mane of dark cherry black hair with blond tips. ( Probs gonna end up drawing something resembling him lol )

His eyes went towards a orangish cherry tint and seemed rather flowy whispy-like like Kurogiris but more whispy.

His size if standing on his hind legs without tail would most likely be around 8'3-8'6 and with tail depending on the without tail measurements around 8'9-9'3 . Why I'm doing it this way ? Most likely because i wanna know how much he grows from first to 'final ' form. Aka when he grew first after the procedure and what he ended up being after settling in the new body. Y'know what I mean, right ?

After waking up it's more than evident that he has little to no idea who he had been before. Just waking up with amnesia and rolling with the pain and everything that most likely ended up with him being overstimulated and throwing a tantrum with bodies flying lol.

The quirks decided upon him were dragon , Shrink shift, Combust and his own original explosion quirk.

The Dragon obviously giving him dragonic form , shrink shift is about ones personal size shrinking and combust alight his mane and blood into a deep cherry red fire but not exactly to a explosive extention. And ofc his own explosions are just that explosions through his sweat ( although his quirk won't work properly bc he doesn't sweat anymore, but an alternative to that will be spoken later )

Testing is a pain in the ass and nursing everything together for him to be healed properly for it was even more. Live testing in which it was recorded for research with scientists + doctors present and having him test his abilities and new body finding and hitting the hard limits multiple times in a row.

It was basically torture for Kat. Since he had no recovery time in-between the testing and when got the time he was slow at it.

What they discovered was that from the dragon quirk the healing factory would only activate when he was on fire , but he had no resistance to his own fire which would end up hurting him more.

Just because the combust quirk worked it was risky to use, so with another add on he got a quirk that enchanted his recovery time and healing factory work giving him some but not much resistance towards the fire that the combustion quirk gave him.

Most of the quirks either malfunctioned together or gave him little to no resistance to the drawback of another quirk. Or it just ended up being really problematic quirk combo that was not suitable to be combined.

It was a shit show of upgrade and downgrade how the quirks worked and slowly Kat was becoming the most disasterous nomu they had ever created. He never lost his temper and was wildly unpredictable, they came to a conclusion of not being able to control him.

They assigned alot of people that worked under them to sedate him which with the healing factory increasing quirk did little to nothing because it fought the sedation very clearly. Many ended up dead trying to get him into a collar that would damped the quirks for a little while before they had him under control.

Although it was nothing to be surprised when he managed to escape his containment cell during the weekly remove-the-old-collar-and-put-a-new-one-on because he was fed up being in one or two places and he proceeded to wreck havoc in the laboratory where he was kept. He unleashed the pent up anger that ended up in a bloodlust and death of many workers.

After breaking out he finds himself in a forest, just besides an abandoned building site. The laboratory he was in being underground for more of safety reasons.

He discovers the other 'normal' nomus incubating in the abandoned building like it was seen during the start of Kamino incident. But at this point still in pain and pretty panicked he doesn't mind them bc they are dormant and just let's them be. Instead Kat finds himself roaming the site and puckering into buildings destroying them most likely.

A little delirious, fatigued and in pain he wanders off, trying to fly as much as he can which is not that much bc of fatigue. He does know how to do it, but he's still fatigued because of the testing.

He ends up collapsing somewhere in a shaded area with people that might have heard him. Most likely villains and vigilantes if the ring the abandoned site is is shady in the first place. They don't really do anything just kinda looks and if one of them is with the LOV. They might report about Kat being out. Literally.

So I completely botched Lyrthindor's quest and ended up having to kill Yurgir simply because I had no way to tell him how to break his contract with Raphael. I need to think how to headcanon this because Gale is the one who can speak with animals in my party so he spoke with the rat and made the deal with it.... Since Lyrthindor's the last Dark Justiciar that Yurgir needed to kill and he's scattered around the temple in the form of a swarm of rats that were now promised protection by Gale.... Ragnar probably just gave up to Astarion's wish to kill Yurgir, with how desperate Astarion was for Raphael's help. The Paladin in Ragnar still lives on.

I just stumbled upon a post that embodies a lot of the things I dislike about the “esoteric” community(ies) of Tumblr, those fake psychics and pseudo-neo-pagans and the like. A scam post. I’ll leave its link at the end of the post but before I want to do a quick breakdown of all that is wrong with it.

# The post is about conjuring a “spirit companion”. Okay, so far so good... oh wait it is not conjuring a “spirit companion”, it is creating one. Okay, it hasn’t been unheard of and... oh wait no. This is a post for somebody else to create for YOU a “custom-made” spirit companion. Now we’re going into the sus territory. If you believe in spirits, in spiritual companions, in a shamanist view of the world, you’d know that spirit companions are not “custom-made” things. It is not a product you can buy at a supermarket. Oh yes, because I didn’t mention you have to BUY the so-called spirit companion. But it isn’t in the title right yet, you have to go down a bit more to see that.

# Already the description of the spirit companion here shows that this person is preying on the feelings of loneliness of people. There is a big insistance on the spirit companion being a “friend” to the person buying it. Being a friend “through the ups and downs”, “holding your hand”, showing you “unconditional love”... This is not specific to this post, this is common for a LOT of so called “experts” around Tumblr, but it is still something I am deeply disturbed by. In real-life, in actual cultures, a “spirit companion” can fill different roles - one of the main ones being the role of a mentor or guide through the learning of one’s powers or explorations into the spirit world ; another being specifically way to channel one’s power, either by augmenting them or focusing them ; and it can also serve as a defensive entity protecting the one it is tied to. It has all sorts of ritualized, sacred, established roles... But when Tumblr hears “spirit companion” they understand a “companion that is a spirit”. People think that a spirit companion is just a spirit you conjure up to be your friend or you lover. This is because most of the people making these assertions basically prey on friendships fantasies and romantic dreams of people - but I never heard of a spirit companion in real belief systems, actual magic systems or historical cultures that is just there to be your friend or your lover.

# This idea of these “spirit companions” post preying on people’s desire for friendship or unfulfilled crushes is made explicit by how the supposed spirit companion can “be given any appearance you like”. I do not know everything about how spirit companions in every culture of the world - but from what I could gather and piece together, in traditions and religions 1) you do not choose the appearance of your spirit companion, it kind of imposes itself naturally or 2) the appearance of the spirit companion will be tied to something related to you (for example if you name mean something the spirit companion shape can reflect the literal meaning of the name). “Customization” of the “spirit companion” is just a glorified OC culture, and here the fact that the so called “seller” can create companions SHAPED LIKE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS just drives further how this is using people’s crushes or desires (everybody had a crush on an animated character at some point ; or wished at some point they lived in a fictional setting described in a movie, book or anime). The seller was however quite clever by adding a limit to their conjuring power: the companions can’t have the appearance of a “real-life person” or celebrity. It is a typical trick to make people believe in what you say - add limits, say “Now I can’t do everything”, because when someone offers you an unlimited thing, an unlimited power that can do anything, it always raises suspicion. By adding a limit, they make it more believable.

# You can choose to have the spirit companion... haunt you. Already ignoring the doubtful grammar and syntax of this passage (You can choose the spirit to be “haunted” - when the writer means “haunting”), haunting is usually NOT a good thing. And it is not something you can will or wish up, and... haunting is a thing for ghosts, and poltergeists, and demons not just... spirit companions. I wanted previously to make an incubus joke about the idea of spirit companions invoked to love you but seriously - invoking spirits to love you and haunt you, that’s some demonic shit X)

# Okay but more seriously, we reach the scam part. You have to pay. Of course you have to pay. Now, the person seems to be “fair” because they say “Pay whatever you want” ; they explicitely make it clear they don’t care about the amount of money sent. BUT “You have to leave a review”. Of course, it is good for business, advertisement and all that. When it isn’t just one person that you have to deal with, but one person surrounded by “satisfied” customers, a victim will fall much easier into it.

But keep in mind the “Pay anything you like” line. We’ll return to that later.

# Of course the customization of the spirit apparently doesn’t stop at the appearance - you can also choose the spirit’s “personality, likes and dislikes”... Again, beyond screaming “OC! OC! OC!”, I love how basically for these people “spirit” is just like clay. You know, you can mold them however you want, into whatever you want. Basically you are God. You give life to whatever you want. That’s it.

# Oh, and you must send to the person your name, your birth date AND a picture of yourself. Which is of course the SAFEST thing to do online - just send your real name with your real face to a random stranger on the Internet who is clearly craving for more money. WHAT COULD GO WRONG?

# The description of the spirit as “wonderful at helping you reach your goals while making you feel loved and cared for” sums up perfectly all I said above. This is a preying on people’s loneliness and using their own desire for friendship and romantic fantasies against them, by convincing them that their own imagination was made real by a third party.

# Remember the “you can pay anything you want, I don’t care” part of the post? Well if you look a bit under it - like a few dozen lines under it... “Minimum price is 40 dollars”. Because obviously “paying nothing under forty dollars” is THE SAME as “you can pay anything you like”. And the person even dares add, right after the forty dollar line “All I want is a review in return”. No my dear, clearly you want more than a review - you want forty dollars, and you are just lying.

hermit the frog—marina (this one’s kinda iffy but eehhh, it’s a flip flop of pov’s between hinata and komaeda, first, hinata knows that komaeda can outsmart him, and is always one step head of him in the trials and it still annoys him akskddgg then it switches to komaeda (at: “well i, went to the doctors believing…”) when he’s got the liars disease and wants hinata to stay but is unable to do so (ya know THAT scene) (fun fact: this part was inspired by an animatic) then some lead up to early chapter 4 and more homoerotic tension blah blah blah. like i said, this one’s a bit hard to fit in with the timeline but the animatic part is what stuck to me keeping it in)

bizzare love triangle—new order (hinata looking back on ch 1 komahina times and missing it “why can’t we be ourselves like we were yesterday?” he’s scared of what’s gonna happen between them down the line)

chapter 4

no strings attached (enemies to lovers)—backseat vagabond (it’s when they’ve entered the fun house and takes place some days before the 4th murder. literally just (one sided) hate smex LMAO….that leads to some reignited feelings from hinata…?)

i forgot that you exist—yonkagor (the investigation is underway and komaeda has just met up with hinata and nanami after the final dead room stuff. komaeda finds out everything and treats hinata like utter garbage, they break up without even being together in the first place <\3 brocken)

backstabber—kesha (“I THOUGHT WHAT WE HAD WAS SPECIAL!1!1!1” hinata feels betrayed again. he’s just like “wth man :(“ and komaeda is still a bitch ansndf)

fan behaviour—issac dunbar (komaeda’s just like “oh you hate me? cute <3” (condescending) and basically just talks down to him that now the “tables have turned” because komaeda used to look up to hinata and the others and basically saw himself as a loser and now THEY’RE all the losers lmao)

woke up—olivia olson, zuzu (hinata grows a pair and is basically just like “you know what, screw you you’re so annoying and literally no one likes you lol stfu” also candy kingdom=hope philosophy or whatever bajsjdfg)

wishful drinking—tessa violet (komaeda character song, after the 4th trial, he knows he’s separated from the group now more than ever (visually i see him in his cottage, poison bottle in his hand, whilst intense staring commences) and he starts to set up for the beginning of the end…..)

chapter 5

smile—ukuletea (this is specifically during the free time event with komaeda at the military base, or lack there of, because if you try to talk to him, komaeda says something along the lines of “don’t worry about me, go talk with one of the others” with a smile on his face (hence “carry on by, i’ll see you off with a smile) it’s meant to be the final ‘normal’ encounter you have with him before what comes after. i imagine that just somehow, someway, komaeda still couldn’t let go of those lingering feelings for hinata, but knows he can’t go back to the way things were, so he’s instead pushing hinata even more away :()

冬のはなし (Fuyu no hanashi)—given (komahina duet, both are looking at their broken relationship, what they’ve lost, they’re both finding difficulty to move on and forget what happened between them, it’s meant to be a sad but bittersweet moment of clinging onto a small piece of hope that each one will still have some longing feeling there)

i just want to be the one you love—cryst (for this one i imagine that komaeda is listening to this on a record player in his cottage (don’t question it LMAO) more longing and loss for a love he can never have,,, ;()

oh ana—thquib, gumi (komaeda is conflicted :// he wants to become the ultimate hope by getting rid of the others (the remnants of despair) but he also hates having to find out this information because of what it means (from his perspective anyways). komaeda still clings onto his deep love for hinata even despite being the personification of his near opposing worldview, and is desperate for hinata to help him out of his turmoil)

bang!—ajr (now with his extremely antagonistic persona, komaeda explodes the lobby and threatens to blow up the rest of the island unless the traitor reveals themself)

crossing the line—mandy moore and eden espinosa (komahina duet, hinata says that komaeda has finally gone too far and begs for him to stop what he is doing, which komaeda refutes saying he will do anything it takes to see his plans be fulfilled, even if that means the others will see him as a complete monster for it)

nothing left to lose—jeremy jordan and eden espinosa (komahina duetttt, literally just a reiteration of same thing that’s explained in the song above (i TOLD you i like to insert as many songs as possible to convey the agenda LOL))

ready as i’ll ever be—tangled cast (another kmhn duet, hinata and the gang go to search for the hidden bombs komaeda has planted on the island, while komaeda goes to set up in the warehouse, both are preparing themselves for whatever may come next)

killer—the ready set (komaeda finally decides to let go of his feelings for hinata, as he will soon no longer be alive to still have them)

time is running out—muse (hinata is still searching for the bombs, and feels backed into a corner by komaeda’s actions, he feels komaeda has complete control in this situation, but is still somehow despite it all intrigued by him. it’s like it’s a car crash you can’t look away from )

again—crusher-p (komaeda’s lament pt 1, with a side of self torment and depreciation, he internally regrets how far he went with his antagonistic behaviour but it’s too late to go back)

eventually—tame impala (komaeda’s lament pt 2, with a side of regret and mourning, he truely believes that this is the only way out of this situation, and with that small lingering attachment of his feelings towards hinata, komaeda internally apologises for all the pain he has caused his one-sided (?) love, knowing his death will hopefully be the last time he gives hinata any grief, that he will eventually move on from komaeda,,,,)

sweet hibiscus tea—penelope scott (komaeda’s lament pt 3 with a side of dissasociation and questioning of what is reality (see: “the artificial way the sunlight bounces off the waxy leaves”) before the door opens to his demise)

arms tonite—mother mother (“i died in you armsssss” *cue dramatic komaeda dying in hinata’s arms scene*. it’s kinda like komaeda talking from beyond the grave, lol)

stuff is way—they might be giants (okay so that infamous makoto and junko animatic of the same song but replace those two with kmhn and the events that have happened over the course of the jabberwock killing school trip up til now. if you haven’t watched it pls do it’s so good)

karma—crusher-p (hinata has just been completely and utterly crushed by what has happened now. kinda like a stages of grief thing (he’s on denial and anger ansjddf) he thinks komaeda’s luck has finally failed him and got the karma that was coming to him: (a reference to the aforementioned wolf in sheep’s clothing)(but shhhh, he knows nothing yet)

all eyes on me—or3o (the chapter 5 trial, hinata basically just reflecting on komaeda’s actions, how he controlled and took centre stage during almost every previous trial and now it’s his turn to uncover the menacing truth komaeda left behind for him (salty salty aksndnfgg))

hidden in the sand—tally hall (after the chapter 5 trial, hinata mourns in his cottage once more and looks back on the time he and komaeda spent together during the prologue because those are good memories for him :,))

chapter 6

something changed—creepP (the epilogue to chapter 5 leading into the final chapter, when hinata and the remaining survivors are beginning to sense this island may not be what they’ve believed this whole time, with friends they’ve mourned suddenly appearing before them, their return to hopes peak, surrounded by glitched walls, unexpected jumps from room to room, and mangas outlining moments and events they can’t seem to remember,, in addition to monokuma’s strange behaviour, it’s easy to see that something isn’t quite right,,,,)

haze—tessa violet (inspired by another animatic of the same song, it’s hinata centric and centred around his feelings and thoughts as kamukura coming into light, and the subsequential transformation, featuring some tiny kmhn crumbs)

help me—or3o (chapter 6 trial, hinata’s pov. a final reflection of all that has occurred in the now world, also the official hinata was kamukura reveal. the inner voices of nanami and kamukura in addition to the help from the other survivors, pushing his determination to take down alter ego junko and create his own future (yeah these last few songs aren’t really kmhn centric but like. komaeda being unalivan’t doesn’t help with that ajsjdfgh))

white space—omori (ahhh this is just them getting out of the neo world, with the final walls crumbling and the venture into the unknown future ahead of them)

strange sight—kt tunstall (IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE!!! to me this is like The komahina song Ever. this is once the survivors have woken up, and their comatose classmates have miraculously woken up, all except for one. hinata goes into the room with all the pods to set up the world destroyer program for komaeda, but before he does that, he looks down at the occupied pod, reflects once again on this boy, no not boy, man, this enigma, the fact that this is the one singular person in his life that has never been more interesting and confusing to him, and yet he still wants to understand him, understand him even more, wake him up so he can at last get closer to him the way he wished when they first met on that beach in the neo world>>>>>)

danganronpa 2.5 (komaeda and the world destroyer)

bitter choco decoration—syudou ((also known as: komaeda’s analysis hour) (komaeda’s perspective of his life and what he sees around him,,, komaeda has always wanted to help others instead of be helped, he tries not to hurt the ones he cares about,, he smiles and laughs with practiced ease, even if it means it’s at his own expense,,, after all, why should his classmates worry about him? he aims to praise and worship, telling them what they want to hear even if he doesn’t believe it himself because they display so much potential, so much hope, they don’t deserve to be upset or dragged down by his burdens . he will insert himself as a background character into each of their lives, and shut down his own significance in process)

i hate it here—quinn (komaeda’s artificial world,,, throughout living within the program, komaeda begins to slightly change his perspective of himself, he feels as though his luck is a complete waste of a talent and he’s becoming something he never wished to be, just another face in the crowd. rather, if he were in a more ideal world, talent wouldn’t matter much to him, his good luck rather helped those he cared about and the bad luck was instead given to himself, and he would maybe even have friends (even though they may be somewhat reluctant))

miss wanna die—jubyphonic (i see this as komaeda with the world destroyer, someone who feels somewhat familiar to him for a reason he can’t yet sustain, killing his friends and ruining his ‘perfect world’. when he meets world destroyer, komaeda knows it’s there for a specific reason, for some reason he senses and flashes back to a specific and stubborn presence continuously reaching out for him that for some reason feels that komaeda can’t continue to be in this coping mechanism world he has created for the rest of his sleeping life (i wonder who that is ajsjdfg). he realises that this is a dream he’s been living in and wishes to wake up and return to reality

flaws—bastille (hinata takes at look at his and komaeda’s flaws: komaeda’s being his luck, something he’s always had to live with, how it’s affected him, affected others and how he’s never hidden the fact that he believed his luck to be a burden to him. meanwhile hinata’s flaw was his feeling towards talent, his lack there of and how that ultimately led him to forever changing his life, he hated his flaws so much that he wanted to bury them as deep as possible, so others wouldn’t see how easily they were able to control his emotions. and now, after all they’ve been through, they are able to live with the flaws they have and use them to better understand each other)

our life—fat bard (some time after hope arc, hinata’s pov, the remnants of despair are now living on the island that was once an artificial nightmare. despite the tragedy, jabberwock almost looks to be returning into a peaceful paradise again. things have begun to change: structures being rebuilt, the sky returning blue with time, crimes slowly being forgiven and bonds being formed (wink wink nudge nudge). days and months come and go, the remnants have made peace that they will be potentially spending the rest of their lives here.

sunkissed—khai dreams (peaceful jabberwock dayze, komaeda’s pov. the feelings of his crush that he first had on the very same island from forever ago have returned tenfold, hinata has gotten closer to him and there’s a feeling of reciprocation there, but he’s to scared to confess to hinata just yet, he’s pining :()

walk but in the garden—llusion, mxmtoon (moar peaceful jabberwock dayze. hinata’s pov. him spending time with komaeda doing mundane things, hanging out and having fun despite being isolated from the rest of the world. they’ve managed to find their own peace here :))

SHIKIII <3 my good friend shiki

first impression - my god you can really tell this game was made in the 2000's by this outfit alone impression now - a wonderfully complex and flawed character who is an absolute delight to watch grow and embrace her issues. her story is so unapologetic - jealousy is an ugly thing, but she's able to confront it and better herself. I adore her and the game does such a good job with attaching both you and Neku to her. favorite moment - her "reunion" with Neku in Neo where he can see her but she can't see him - but she knows he's there regardless. it got me good when I first played. idea for a story - I'd looove to see more details of what she's up to between the original twewy and the sequel!! working through her grief over Neku, working with Eri on starting up Gatto Nero - plus adjusting to living again after being dead is always a fun trope. unpopular opinion - admittedly I haven't delved too deep into the twewy fandom so I'm not sure what's popular lol but. I really wish we could've seen more of her in Neo. I know not Every OG character can play a major role but for being one of the poster characters of the original, she really doesn't get much, especially compared to Beat. favorite relationship - this isn't even a question for me - her and Neku just make me want to blow up if I think too long about them. have yall seen the anime scene of them meeting up at Hachiko in the Realground?? Neku's face?? love at first sight. literally. i'm sick favorite headcanon - good god have you ever seen a more transgender character. transfemme shiki is so canon to me

Also!!!! This is your prompt to gush about your fave characters. Like in any if your current interests!!!

... You. All of you. You are going to be the death of me.

Trigger warning: this post will discuss topics like how to kill a person in more detail. It also mentions guns and death. If you feel uncomfortable about any of that, please, refrain from interacting for your own safety.

So, one of the things I find interesting about Tenma is that he is, essentially, a doctor. A doctor who is making an attempt on a person's life.

Having that in mind, you would think that a professional in the healthcare field such as himself would be knowledgeable on human anatomy. Specially on the vital parts that could instantaneously kill you.

This is further proved in a manga exclusive scene, where he threatens to murder a neo-nazist — who, mind you, was the first who attempted to injure Tenma — with a ballpoint pen.

Chapter 26.

I still wish that they had included this scene in the anime. I think about it every now and then... It felt genuinely satisfactory that, while Tenma did not kill the person he was threatening, he got back at him by kicking him out of the place that they were in. This also brings a more intimidating demeanor to our kind doctor.

And, another unrelated note: sometimes, I even wonder... with this scene and his knowledge by themselves, why does he think it's a necessity to learn how to use a gun? Anything can be a weapon, if you are creative enough. Is it to use the same weapon that Johan utilized to execute Adolf Junkers when he first appeared to Tenma as an adult? Does it hold any symbolic meaning that I still haven't figured it out? I do not know.

But, I am digressing...

Sometimes, he will reference Hugo's teachings when aiming. “When you shoot a person twice, the likelihood of killing them is rapidly increased.” However... as a doctor — and specially as a neurosurgeon — he is aware that he should aim for the head. This way, you can have a pretty much guaranteed death, with few chances of your victim surviving.

In most cases, Tenma will simply impose a threat to the others while pointing his gun — sometimes, even doing so in an individual's head, showing that he is aware of what could happen to them. But, I would be lying to you if I said that he never pulled the trigger (as difficult of a decision that was).

However, in these exceptions, he has treated their wounds afterwards. You can also see that when he does shoot the others, he intentionally refrains from aiming to their vital parts.

He simply cannot stand the sight of seeing someone hurt without any aid — regardless of how bad they may seem.

This is pointed out by someone he shot.

Chapter 140.

He just can't kill someone. Despite being so knowledgeable on his field about death, his immediate reaction after making such an attempt is healing them. He just doesn't have the malice of leaving someone to bleed to death (or making them quickly perish).

Tenma knows that when he aims to Johan's head, it will be over. The doctor won't be able to heal him. Despite being a genius, even he encountered himself through a difficult period trying to save the antagonist's life when he was a child. Who can guarantee that he is going to be able to do that again? But, he knows how dangerous Johan has been, and that he should not be kept alive.

Concluding: Tenma has everything to become a frightening killer thanks to his profession. He just requires some training (and, perhaps, he should also learn how to keep a low profile while being on the run). He could be able to effortlessly kill someone. But, he will not do that. He cannot do that. As a doctor, he cannot stand the sight of seeing someone hurt. He chooses to see the good in everyone. To him, all lives warrant the right to have a treatment — even those who tried to hurt him.

The World Ends with Witches by AyaAya, AU based off the anime halloween promo art, Shiki is a witch who is trying to seek the help of a certain vampire for a wish. Accompanied by Rhyme the shape-shifting cat, she opens a witchcraft shop in Shibuya and stumbles upon a certain 'Apple Jerk' who might lead her closer to her current objective. Meanwhile, a certain nun tasked a former pirate to hunt down witches. Much like Sanctuary, this is more of a gen adventure fic focusing on lots of characters at once with neshiki sprinkled on the side.

Wishes and Curses by UncertainLuna, Modern Fairytale AU After making a deal with a certain old woman, Shiki had to figure out how to spend the next seven days living inside her best friend's body, soon after, she meets a cat who can talk, looks like another boy her age also had made a deal with the same old hag and had to spend the next seven days as a cat instead. If TWEWW focuses on a lot of characters at once, then this fic primarily focuses on Neku and Shiki and pretty much revolves around them.

Starstruck by UncertainLuna, AU. Neku is a P.I. tasked to investigate a stalker case surrounding the popular idol, Eri of Reaper Entertainment, whose actual identity is Shiki Misaki. Soon he finds himself helping her for far more than just her initial issue; namely finding a way to break her out of her agency's mistreatment.

Reaper's Prey by Elenya, reaper Neku AU, Shiki is just an ordinary shopkeeper trying to get by, a certain regular at her shop however, begins to catch her eye, why does he only buy pins everytime? What kind of job he actually has? Things get interesting when the mystery guy suddenly asks her out on a date. At the same time it happens, something seems to be... a bit off with Shibuya. Not many chapters out yet, but I already really like the concept and how it's going so far.

A New Life by UncertainLuna, after the events of Neo, Neku discovers that life in the RG had continued on as if he had never died, as his timeline was replaced by the one where he got to live a normal life after the Long Game, this includes having actually dated Shiki earlier and sharing an apartment with her. That said, their universe might be replaced, but their memories did not, and they both had to scramble to adjust to their new life where everyone in Shibuya think they've been together for a long time.

As for oneshots:

School Days by El_Tofu_San, revolves around Neku and Shiki's time at school after the original game. Fluff, lots of it.

A Tail of Love by PetildaFan, Shiki finds an injured merman at the shore, she tries to help him out, unfortunately, he's not really the easiest person to get along with.

Red Marks by El_Tofu_San, shameless fluff. Shiki decides to try on make up by a certain someone's suggestion to get ready for a dinner party. Neku also just happens to be there when it happens, what could possibly go wrong? Nothing, maybe.

The Bright Side of The Moon by AmuletMisty, Hagoromo AU. Local fisherman Neku finds a robe, a very beautiful robe, while out on a night stroll. After taking it home with him, he meets the owner of said robe, a celestial maiden, who demands him to return it to her. But he refuses. Of course, there's no way the maiden would let him off the hook that easily.

my CURRENT personal ranking of devilman content in terms of my preferences... subject to change if/when i consume more content

original 1972 manga (PLEASE LOOK AT ALL THE RYO MOMENTS. MIKI "THE HANDS" MAKIMURA. ZENNON AND SATAN INTERACTION. [ZENNON IS CONCERNED ABOUT HIS DEMONS!! INSTEAD OF DISREGARDING THEIR LIVES!!] SATAN MONOLOGUE IS ALSO STELLAR)

2. 1987 OVAs (PLEASE LOOK AT ALL THE RYO MOMENTS #2. THE ENGLISH DUB IS HILARIOUS AND SO BAD THAT IT'S GOOD. SILENE GIRLBOSS MOMENTS)

3. cb chara (i love how Silene and Kaim get more character development. a very light and funny series)

4. cyborg 009 vs devilman (still watching this actually)

5. amon apocalypse (designs are STELLAR, plot is not faithful to the manga. admittedly i only watched like 10 minutes of this)

6. crybaby (i don't like how Silene is rewritten to be hypersexual AND ALSO raped by Akira at all (ooc for Akira imo), i wish Miki had more moments to be an absolute badass as in the manga, and i hate crybaby Ryo's design oh my god why are you doing that to him WHY ARE YOU REMOVING ALL HIS NEURODIVERGENT ANGELBOY SWAGGER) (i love Jenny's design though she looks the coolest here) (also this particular adaptation was much more uncomfortable to watch for me relative to the ones above but that is likely the point given that the director said at one point that crybaby is meant to resemble what he figures Go Nagai would've done for the manga in the 70s, if i am not mistaken?)

7. devilman lady (only read the last 2 chapters and i hated it to begin with and all the summaries of the other chapters i hear. its only redeeming qualities is Michael's existence and how Satan and Akira get to team up at the end)

and where do i put that really weird spinoff demon king on here? it contradicts other lore that go nagai made!!

i am verrrrry slowly getting through the manga now :} and I apologize bc this message is probably going to get long akjdsjsh I tried to be coherent somewhat I prommy

yeah, even being newer to this series I could feel the difference in characterization between the manga compliant and non-compliant portions. and for the most part the anime only is REALLY bad 💀💀 the ghost episode was such a slog to get through I totally understand why my roomie showed me this season last. but at the same time there’s some bits I really enjoyed??

Again, still working on the manga, so maybe some of my complaints will be addressed later. I dunno if this makes sense but in a lot of the non manga portions of season one Sebastian felt like he had more ,, character to him?? I don’t know the right word. But like, him yoinking ciel when ciel was in danger, despite that going DIRECTLY against orders was interesting to me. And then ciel getting angry at him when detective guy died protecting ciel bc Sebastian didn’t do anything was a cool bit as well (though detective death had like zero impact they tried REALLY hard to make us care but it was so rushed). Sebastian also just felt like he had more snark in general. I feel like in the other bits I watched he was more just another extension of ciel and just does whatever ciel says without question. whereas in the anime bits the whole the like, nature of the contract is brought up more and bc of that we get to see a little more into Sebastian’s character and how he really feels?? I don’t know if that makes sense sorry 😭 I liked (for the most part) the characterization he got though

Also I loved how many more supernatural entities the anime got. Like there’s more than one demon, there’s ghosts (even though the episode SUCKS), angels, a hellhound, whatever the hell might be going on with Lau- I was shocked when my rookie said that there’s like, nothing other than Sebastian and the reapers in the manga itself (though she also hasn’t caught up fully so???). Hannah was fun in the time she lasted and I’m weirdly interested on the triplets. Why did they seem to be serving Hannah in that one flashback sequence? Is there a demon hierarchy? What’s it like? Also- how do demons come to be?? At the end of two ciel becomes one via Hannah’s contract with alois in his body so like??!? Can demons just do that to anyone anytime or what? (Also, Can demons make contracts with beings other than humans? Can demons die? PLEASE I NEED LORE).

Im a sucker for Angel themed villains also so I was kinda excited for that in s1 but.. it was. meh. It certainly doesn’t help that the male form of the Angel looks EXACTLY like one of my fav characters from another franchise, Namely Joshua from (neo) world ends with you, who coincidentally is also an Angel. like that’s just a character I already like but written worse and much more annoying and I don’t like him at all actually. No Ronnie this season which :’) my roomie told me ahead of time but I miss him still. wish we had more reaper lore though. Why is will so opposed to over time. What does he even DO when he’s not working. do reapers have like.. anything to do outside their jobs? Do they even get paid? why did grelle’s chainsaw get stopped by a coat getting caught in it I thought that stuff could slice through anything (same for Ronnie’s lawnmower thing during that one time in his intro in 2- like guys ur scythes are kinda ass if they break this easy. undertaker had the right idea keeping a basic design 😭) WHY DOESNT EVERYONE HAVE A LITTLE GLASSES CHAIN THINGY LIKE GRELLE? Ronnie lost his glasses At one pint I’m pretty sure will lost his glasses at another guys just get the. Stupid chain pls yall rely on ur eyesight it’s so much more convenient to have that thingy so ur glasses don’t get lost. grelle girlbossing here she has the right idea cmon man

(sorry I fuckinh love the reapers head full so many thoughts on them SPEAAKING OF-) the books that wrote peoples lives as they were happening was such a dumb anime only inclusion. We paused the episode for like 20 minutes JUST to complain about it- it’s an ultimately stupid choice (the library is sick though just make it a film library) that feels like it was made purely for the stupid death bookmark thing- which also was a stupid idea because that’s way too OP and it was made to fix the DUMBEST possible problem the writers could’ve written. A locked room?? Really?? That’s the barrier we need to overcome? didn’t they TELEPORT TO THE LIBRARY OR SMTH I am going insane I hate the books so much. the film aesthetic is so much better the books are confusing and stupid I am glad they’re not canon. If it was a like, they used to use books but then film was invented thats be neat. It’s funny to imagine the reapers going digital as time progresses but the books being used at the same time as the cinematic record pisses me off SO MUCH

undertaker reveal was funny though. like. obv doesn’t live up to book of Atlantic but the writers didn’t even try to make it hype they just made it a heehoo silly and I think it was for the best, it was a good moment.

The writers were trying to squeeze in condensed versions of greater arcs and important moments where they could and I think for the most part they did ok. the doll guy was clearly just a Walmart book of circus and then undertaker reveal.. like it was fine. Them killing off Lau was .. odd. I don’t get that. That whole arc was confusing. I do not understand the butterfly thing- is that in the manga too? it perplexed me and my roommate didn’t seem to get what was going on either

ack. I’ve more thoughts on this probably I just can’t remember em rn. overall I liked the anime I think but I can’t wait to read the manga- sorry for the rambling I hope it’s fine sjdhshshsh

i completely agree w you on your opinions of the anime and the different characters that originate from it. i hATEEEEE ASHHHH!!! SM. grelles characterization in jack the ripper was very nice, right? she was her usual simpful self, but she also was such a powerful maniac(and i love her for that <3). after that shes almost purely comic relief. they make her so weak(when she couldve most likely won against undertaker in bota if sebastIAN FOCUSED ON HIS GOAL INSTEAD OF SHOWING OFF). she barely does anything to contribute to the legit lore of the anime.

i can assure you, theres more non-human entities than demons and reapers in the manga. book of the atlantic happened, right? they had the bizarre dolls in there. i wouldnt consider them human.

im glad you love the reapers! id love to see you join the reaper side of tumblr. i adore them and their found family theyre so goofy. as for the glasses chain thing, i do agree it would be more convenient, but i like grelle bein a little more unique <3
