Ntwewy au where neku wasn’t in the shadow realm for all that time he just went to college out of town. Comes back, immediately falls into the reapers game again. Coco still shot him tho.

twewy is peak because one of the minor background storylines is about these characters who are overworked/treated poorly by their supervisors and how you’ve got one of them protesting like ‘hey we deserve promotions! we deserve a healthy and rewarding work environment we’re not just corporate tools!’ but the job in question is reaping human souls

actually obsessed with neku and beat's neo dynamic of beat being fiercely protective of neku against the people who shot him to death and neku having to hold him by the collar and get him to back off. part bc it's just cute - remember when beat used to deny caring about anyone not named rhyme? we're far past those days. and part bc. the implication that neku just got used enough to being shot to death by the third time to not hold a grudge is killing me.

Love that part of the ntwewy secret reports that's like
Dear bullshit diary,
Joshua, who causes me ten thousand headaches a day, finally got off his ass to visit his disintegrating city to—of all things—offer moral support to Neku fucking Sakuraba. Joshua has never been a comforting presence to anyone, ever, in his life, and yet no matter how extensively I check the sensors I can find no evidence of psychic influence that would have caused Neku to stabilize at the fucking sight of him. This was the only action he took the entire ordeal. What the fuck. Clearly there's something wrong with the both of them.

yknow in the wake of neo. i'm choosing to believe beat's comment about how he could rob a bank and rhyme would still be there for him is half about her being supportive. half about her having potential for crime as well
like she's the one who gets the floor plans and takes out the security. the hacker who helps make the bank robbery possible

With regards to your Joshua and Komaeda post, I'd argue that there very much is a bigger bad. The game very much sets the Higher Plane up as this, to the point that every aspect of the UG is fashioned to their benefit, and they *do* decide what Joshua does, in the sense that the rules for Composers are put in place by them, including the ones that limit their interactions to the Producer and Conductor. NEO even has them flip out over Joshua's decision not to destroy the city and try to force him to do it anyway, because purifying cities is what Composers are supposed to do. Joshua's character is one who has the image of narrative control and who believes himself to have it but cannot do anything to escape the fate he's locked himself into aside from setting up his own erasure. There's supossed to be an irony to him taking his own life because he felt trapped and alone in the RG, only to trap and isolate himself further in a way he can do nothing about.
I get what you're getting at, but I'm not sure I agree here.
First, I'd like to point out that I feel like a lot of the higher plane pressure comes from NEO, and I was mostly talking in the context of the original. There, the long game and the decision on whether Shibuya should be erased or not are framed as entirely Joshua's decision. What really drives this home is Hanekoma's place in it - despite that he is of a higher rank than Joshua is, what can he do when he doesn't agree with the decision to erase Shibuya? He can scheme a lot, but that's it. There's no override mechanism. There is no one we meet in person in og TWEWY who can override Joshua's choice. That's what, to me, helps it feel like he has so goddamn much narrative agency. This IS his domain, and no one we see can change that.
(Also, do you mind if I ask for a source on there being a rule that limits his interactions down so much? Because I've been wondering about that regarding the og game's secret ending and Another Day - which is an AU but also one that canonically exists since that's where our Joshua teleported to after week 2. A universe where Joshua's still composer, but has a much more active social life in Shibuya. So it makes me...wonder. Because much as I love main timeline Joshua, he did seem sorta in a bout of extreme misanthropy.)
As for NEO, I...think framing the higher plane forcing him as him being trapped in powerlessness is doing the themes a bit of a disservice there. Obviously the higher plane's fuckery is really bad, but I'd like to point out it feels like it fits into the main theme of decisions with Rindo. Decisions are going to have consequences, but we can weather those and still move forward. The higher plane really not liking that Shibuya still stands is a...huge consequence. But it's one we can move past. We love Shibuya, and in the end, it can fight back its promised destruction, in part proving we were right to spare it in the first place.
(There's. Also that. I love him. Joshua not interfering for almost all of NEO is extremely within character. I'd like to point out w2d2 and him interfering with the mission to guarantee success...but not telling Neku about it until afterwards with the justification that who doesn't love suspense?)
Just. I get what you're getting at, but that's not really how I interpreted it.
