The Incredible Hulk (1968) #247

#ok I’m only here for Betty #I’m surprised to see her call the Hulk ‘a poor creature who means no harm’#she has been in the book very much since she separated from Glenn and then left her father to try to learn independence #but I think her overall portrayal has veered towards that she has positive (it at times complicated) feelings about Bruce #and with that a begrudging consideration for the Hulk #and I don’t remember what would have happened before she got mostly written out of the book #that would have made her have such a positive and uncomplicated view of the Hulk #because ‘a poor creature who means no harm’ is pretty strong language #also it’s striking that she’s having this confrontation with Glenn and is essentially getting the last word between the two of them #because this isn’t really different from the conflict she’s been having with her father #other than that that’s normally based around how could he do [x] to the Hulk when he knows that Bruce is a part of him #and here she’s just talking about the Hulk and not bringing Bruce up #but confrontations with her father never go this well for Betty #also the fact that she says ‘I won’t even dignify that with an answer’ when Glenn accuses her of still having feelings for Bruce #please I want them to get back together it’s been long enough #I think it would be really interesting #as an aside if Betty’s had feeling for Bruce during her entire marriage with Glenn that that’s kind of Glenn’s fault #I will never drop how the two of them got married during a brief period of time when it was believed that Bruce was dead #and when Glenn learned that Bruce was alive he conspired with General Ross to keep Betty from finding out #to buy Ross time to try to actually kill him #because they both realized that if Betty learned Bruce was still alive she might leave Glenn for him #like Glenn tricked Betty into not getting their marriage annulled during their honeymoon #and then is all upset that their marriage failed and they got a divorce #marvel #betty ross #glenn talbot #fred sloan #rick jones #my posts #comic panels

Edit since a lot of people seem confused - your "real" name is the name that you want to be referred to in real life. It doesn't have to be your legal name. So if you're trans and you have a different name to whats on your birth certificate, even if not many people call you by the name, it still counts as your real name.

Serial Killer!Ghost but he isn't actually the killer he's just awkward as hell, and has weird hobbies. You're convinced that this huge butcher that stares everyone down and has the most unsettling aura in the world is the serial killer that the police are trying to track down, I mean... look at him. dichotomous plants are so weird man. like they’re not even weird it’s the becoming the dichotomous that’s weird. i went to a talk once about a population of strawberries that were accidentally slowly becoming dichotomous and they didn’t even have sex chromosomes, like they had like a bunch of genes across a bunch of chromosomes that did a little bit of sex but not a lot and it added up to one whole sex kind of but not enough that they had all collectively decided to be one sex or the other, so there was still like, a sizable chunk of the population that was producing flowers of both sexes. like they were microdosing it. taking the sex genes for a spin in the strawberry patch

So I've been thinking lately about how Mithrun is Kabru's dark mirror (more on that another time- it needs its own post), and I thought it interesting that one of their parallels is that they were both cared for by Milsiril, but in opposite directions. She took Kabru in as her foster after he was orphaned and tried to convince him not to become an adventurer. On the flip side, she helped rehabilitate Mithrun specifically so that he could rejoin the Canaries.

And I kept wondering: why?

For Kabru, obviously she loves him a whole lot- despite any other shortcomings in their relationship, I do believe that.

So I get why she tries to convince him not to go dungeoning, and, failing that, at least prepares him as thoroughly as she can.

But why help Mithrun? She used to hate Mithrun, but after realizing what a secretly twisted person he was, she actually thought of him more positively (oh, Milsiril). So it wasn't as if she held the kind of grudge that might motivate her to make his already-depleted life even more miserable by sending him back to the dungeons. And it wasn't that she felt bad for him either, since she didn't visit Mithrun for the first ~20 years of his recovery.

The Adventurer's Bible says that Utaya was the impetus for Mithrun returning to the Canaries, but Milsiril is the one who made the trip to see him and tell him about it.

Why would Milsiril work so hard to get her old coworker back into fighting fit? Why encourage him to return to such a dangerous lifestyle, when she was the one who chose not to mercy-kill him?

That last panel is such a crazy thing to hint at and then never elaborate on. Without it we could have just thought that Milsiril wanted the Canaries' work to continue without her, even if it seemed out of character. I think some people even assume she's just a natural caretaker as a foster mom and handwave it to include nursing Mithrun too. What could Milsiril's suspicious motives be? What does she gain from Mithrun joining the Canaries that isn't an altruistic desire to see dungeons safely sealed? Feeling a sense of responsibility for the work she left behind isn't an ulterior motive.

My theory is: Milsiril, knowing that Mithrun was empty save for the burning desire to face the demon again, wound him up like a clockwork doll and pointed him back at the dungeons.

Hoping that he'd eliminate the biggest threat to Kabru's life, before it was too late for him.
