supernatural 😔 (self explanatory) (gave me brainworms at 13 AND at 20)

black sails. show of all time. a story is true a story is untrue. wough 😵‍💫 have never been able to fully rewatch this show
the oa. watched this in april 2020 and SOBBED for 2 straight hours after finishing the second season because it was cancelled. its SO good and SO sexy (the house in s2 that eats people. my god....) and SO beautiful. forever mad it got cancelled because the cliffhanger makes me so crazy (i simply love when actors play themselves in things). jason isaacs
murdoch mysteries. well this show is not good (and is somehow still running) but i was Obsessed with it in middle/high school which has to count for something
dispatches from elsewhere. this show made me so crazy i genuinely believed the characters were going to walk out of my television screen and into real life. v funny and v heartfelt and also richard e grant is there to monologue at the camera
taskmaster. its fun! i love watching comedians fail to do tasks. shoutout to the guy on youtube who's uploading the new seasons :) also the new zealand and australian versions are v good
halt and catch fire. i watched this while i was quarantining in a hotel for 2 weeks and joe macmillan is the character of all time. keot yelling HE'S A PERSON at my laptop screen because he's real to me

IMPORTANT! PLEASE SIGNAL BOOST!
For anyone in New York City, you have to be very careful! There are reports of a dangerous man by the name of Arthur Lester roaming the streets. He may introduce himself as Will Henley or Peter Yang. He will not look you in the eye and may begin arguing with himself under his breath. This man is dangerous, he has admitted to at least seven murders!
🎶 jazzenthusiast04 Follow
This is just fearmongering. You left out the very important context that he was being threatened by a serial killer at the time! He was saying whatever he could to get out of it. Do your own research before you share misinformation like this smh
#disappointed in everyone who blindly shared this #the truth is easily found #if he had actually committed those murders, the detective on the case would have arrested him! #just take one minute to think before you post

same thing of how ppl are so cringy about Arthur being a soft bany who picks flowers and journals and someone fucking says his rough personality is an act? THE FUCK YOU MEAN IT'S AN ACT, HE'S AN FUCKING KILLER 😭 Not only that, you can pick flowers as John in rdr1 and rdr2 too i fucking don't get them lmao there is literally a side mission in rdr1 to pick flowers for some dude
plus, they always praise Arthur for being an gentleman or something but ignores how John is so too. Him literally saving a barn for a woman, being so loyal and devoted to his wife, in an mission in rdr undead nightmare he comforted a woman who had a bad panic attack (hugging her, giving her a chair and shit), defended Eva in rdr1 as well. He always tried to help and did, people ignore this shit. Even good things he does, Arthur gets the credit for everything.
Arthur fans are exhausting most of the times, i'm sorry.
ALL of the gang members are killers and thieves. That's one of the points that the game tries to show us. That's why it's shocking when someone as hilarious and down to Earth as Sean jokes around with someone one second and then brutally murders them the next. It's why Hosea is dangerous, too. That's why there are questions about redemption to begin with. The rough personality is not an act. Why would Hosea and Dutch both call him a brute so often? Why would they repeatedly ask him to slow down or act like a gentleman -something Grimshaw also encourages. That's all three parental figures. If Arthur was perfectly soft and gentle, he wouldn't need these reminders from his 'parents'. That's why it's charming when Arthur IS soft because it's two sides to the same coin. It's complexity and hidden depths and that's beautiful! That's what I like to see in characters! Arthur is the enforcer of the gang for a reason. He's somewhat the boogie man because of how intimidating he is and how he is NOT afraid to rough people up. Was it an act to rough up Mr. Downes? Was it an act to rough up any of the people Strauss sends him after? If Arthur didn't have any problems, why would he need redemption? Arthur himself admits that he had some issues and that he actively wants to change. Again, that's the point of the game. Same with John, if he was perfect, there would be no need for redemption there either. As for the flowers, yes. John even says, "Come here, you little beauty" or something similar to that. Yes,you're totally right about picking flowers for someone's wife being a mission. John is such a gentleman in rdr 1, that Bonnie thinks it's an act because she's not used to men being so genteel, especially a man like John Marston. She says it adds to his mystery. Both men are gentlemen. I'm not sure why that's hard for people to see.
I love Arthur, I do, but I agree that some of his fans make it hard not to feels sour towards Arthur. (Who did nothing wrong.)

Gonna start listening to Malevolent tonight
Tumblr media
episode one is coming up
What I know going into this:
There's a guy called Arthur with a guy in his head
The voice is new
The voice isn't human
The voice lived in a book
Something something murder maybe? And like, right away, somebody dies too
Profanity? 🤔
There is an interactive element to this, in which apparently a bunch of people got to vote on what happened next. As someone coming into it now, who can't change anything about what's happened, I get to judge these people's thought processes instead.
My face if their decisions intrigue me:
Tumblr media
My face if they do not:
Tumblr media
What I am blindly guessing:
Voice likes murder, Arthur is not as into it
Arthur has an office job or something? Something where he sits a lot
Arthur would like this voice to not be in his head
The voice would also like to not be in Arthur's head
What I am guessing after using this as a hint:
Tumblr media
Mystery show
Arthur does sit a lot
Magic mystery
Arkham = either Asylum or Horror 🤔
Arthur brings the Dark World to him instead of going to it
Whatever happens in this, it could've all been avoided if this guy slept in that morning, and that knowledge will haunt this guy until the last episode
Update: and here's a link to the full thread so no one has to dig through the reblogs 💖

So "Doctor Faustus" already being out by the time Dream came by in 1589, is...uh, possibly a bit fudged for the sake of the story in Sandman, but I'm thinking about Hob canonically calling bisexual legend Kit Marlowe a great playwright, and the fact that Doctor Faustus is literally about a handsome demon seducing a more or less normal guy into selling his soul in exchange for an extraordinary life, including temporary immortality during the agreed 24-year span (including a scene where Faustus survives a murder attempt and holds his own severed head in a scene that I'm sure made Hob fuckin' blanche wondering if his secret had gotten out).
And I'm also thinking about how there's a strong running theme in "Faustus" of Mephistophilis steering Faust away from getting married. There is no Marguerite (Faust's wife in other versions) in Marlowe's version of the story which is really interesting. Especially because there's a rather strong whiff of jealousy (especially with Arthur Darvill's performance) around Mephistophilis urging Faust away from marriage, saying he'll bring him fine courtesans, or even (eventually) Helen of Troy instead, but definitely don't get married.
And I'm also thinking about my (and others') emerging fanon that Hob had his own written-or-unwritten fanfic of Faust x Mephistophilis that was heavily based on his own fantasies around his dark and mysterious stranger who gave him immortality. ("This could be us, but you keep fuckin' leaving after 5 minutes...") and a thought occurred to me.
So it's really weird that Hob just happens to get married within a few years, at most, of his 1589 meeting with Dream.
Now, my main assumption around this, Watsonian/in-universe, is that Hob wanted to demonstrate success to his stranger. So within a few years of the 1589 meeting, he looked at the date and went, "Oh shit, if I really wanted to show off I should get married and have an heir on the way, that's the true mark of success in my era!" (Which, of course, Dream is spectacularly unimpressed by and/or projecting his own miseries onto Hob's inevitable despair once they die.)
But now I'm thinking about "Doctor Faustus" and also kind of wondering... timeline fudging aside where he could have conceivably seen the play (or some early version of it while Marlowe was writing it) and if that could lend to a slightly alternative reading of why Hob was in a rush to get married before his meeting with his stranger?
Either:
My tall dark and possibly-not-the-Devil-then-again- the Devil-could-just-LIE stranger is coming. Faustus in "Doctor Faustus" passed up on a chance to possibly have his soul saved by not being married. So it might be a good idea to be married just in case, y'know, for the sake of my soul and so I'm not tempted by being single.
(The more Dreamling-shippy one) My tall dark and handsome stranger can't possibly be interested in me. In fact, it's kind of pining and pathetic to still be nominally single when he comes by, especially after 200 years. Talk about desperate. Maybe it's better if I'm married, that way I don't look desperate and it's not like he'd ever be interested, right? But if he does seem annoyed that I'm married, I will have definitely learned something.
Only for Dream to peace out of there almost immediately upon meeting happily-married-Hob.
Now, do I think canonically that Hob was sort of testing the waters by getting married? Not especially cuz it's an ass-backwards way to go about it, if it was a consideration at all, I'd see it as more hedging to the tune of not looking desperate, rather than trying to make Dream jealous or anything.
But I would bet (or at least put in a fanfic) that Hob added the fact that Dream did not seem especially enthused about his marriage into his little mental list of "Maybe? But surely not. But maybe?" as it emerged around, say, 1789 along with all the other later evidence of possible interest.

Kurt's Diary - Thoughts and Theories
(Including crack theory Naib didn't kill Murro)
1) Emily's (first aid kit?)
Tumblr media
2) Wu Chang's umbrella is still here, and NE is making sure we know this. That means either Jose did leave but didn't bring the umbrella with him, or he didn't leave
Tumblr media
If he did win, was he put into another game like Emma and Murro (Emma's letter did mention her being with others her 2nd time around)?
Orpheus did say he "treasured" the opportunity to include Jose in his experiments, which could mean he'd want to use him as long as he could?
* Michiko's mask is still here too.
3) The "guy" Murro would rather "freeze to death" than encounter can't be the Hullabaloo group (Murro the only survivor). Likely Naib, who's chasing Murro based on Naib's 1st letter (only other possible option is the manor owner)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4) HA! I WAS RIGHT! THERE WAS SOMETHING SECRET ABOUT THE FROG AND ITS GOLD BALL! (I'm sorry, I've been focused on that stupid thing since I first joined IDV and saw the diaries.) Question now is what it does... (secret exit?)
Tumblr media
We know the gold ball was in Murro's room based on William's diary before he returned it to the statue. Maybe Murro knew its secret. But for what purpose? Did Murro hide something there, like how he used apple juice to write secret pages in his diary? Or something else?
5) Pretty sure the "explorer" isn't literally Kurt here. The one who "refused to trust his allies" and was "brutally slain by a wild beast" should be Murro, based on Murro's diary page Kurt finds, and Kurt may assume Bane killed Murro for now and thus Bane is the "beast"
Tumblr media
Though considering the other letters, Naib is another option, but Kurt should have no reason to know that (if Naib did indeed kill Murro), so at least in this context Kurt says "wild best" to refer to Bane.
Tumblr media
I've always had 2nd thoughts/doubts about the idea Naib wants to kill Murro. We know Naib works for Arthur Russel, who we know is a detective. Arthur is currently the one investigating both the Hullabaloo tragedy and Lakeside Village.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We know Arthur cares about his investigators as he pulls them out of the investigation when he believes a "crime syndicate" is involved with Lakeside. We haven't seen anything yet that implies Arthur also has his men do assassinations though...
Tumblr media
Not saying that can't be the truth but I want more info before jumping to any conclusions, despite whatever the manor owner says, especially as we know even the manor owner isn't all-knowing (like with the people who only leave puddles behind, or Naib managing to disappear).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's hard for me to say, but it is possible there were multiple sets of footprints belonging to more than 1 person, aka maybe Naib's was 1 of them (if not Bane's, if Bane only stays in his cabin in the forest).
Seem to be maybe 4 sets of footprints
1 set
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2nd set
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3rd set
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4th set
Tumblr media
But if Naib can disappear from the manor owner's sight, maybe he can also help other people to disappear too? If Arthur wanted to find the culprit of the Hullabaloo deaths and they discovered someone else from the circus had survived, they may have wanted to find him to help solve the mystery of the circus murders, which could be why Naib went after Murro as we saw in his 1st letter.
As an investigator, a new witness could be the key to solving the whole mystery (maybe that's just me as someone who reads/watches/plays too much detective stuff)
Naib obviously knows how to be stealthy/sneaky considering he has to do the same for himself to hide from the authorities, since Naib is a deserter, and desertion is a serious offense.
Murro's smart too considering the sort of invisible ink he uses.
So I think it's possible...
Maybe a good question to ask is “Why”? Why would Naib want to kill Murro? Mike is friendly with Murro, who Mike helped fake his death for, so he’s not the reason. And Naib isn’t just a brainless killer, since he deserted after refusing to kill his comrades, so he’d need a reason.
I guess you could say he might if he was paid to do so, but who’d ask to kill Murro? I doubt there are too many people that know too much about him enough to either hate him or have a reason to kill the person Bernard labeled as a “wild child” for his circus.
Different note, but the hole is gone in Servais' diary, but the boars are now in that same area that 1 set of footprints led to. It's also where Naib leaves the dead boar, which has a section of it torn open.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still no idea what might've been inside.
Too many questions...
6) Info about Kurt's 2nd letter
Tumblr media
"tree cave" = Murro's room
William and Kurt were awake in the evening due to the "awful weather". Nothing about sounds of "wild beasts"
Kurt thought they should do more than sit in their rooms, which is why he had Will help gather Naib and Murro. This was when Kurt went to look for Murro, found Murro not in his room + door locked, then went outside, where he saw footsteps, a (freshly dug?) hole, and Bane. He didn't see a "corpse", any heads being "bit off", or it being dragged off
Last thing Kurt says is to ask Naib to look at his new "work" based on his "experiences". This may be, at least in part, related to the work "Kurt Frank's Travels" from Kurt's 4th letter that he writes to Blackett Publications to get published. But nothing, at least from this yet, about telling Naib about seeing "a wild beast dragging his corpse into the shrubs. It bit off his head". Doesn't mean he didn't tell Naib this, but based on how much of the previous stuff was true, it's at least doubtful this is the full truth

Clone high season 2 episode concepts that would've actually been fun/cool
Abe tries to get into "real magic" to impress Joan by hanging out with Aleister Crowley and Arthur Conan Doyle. Jokes about people being too into Harry Potter being lame, jokes about paranormal teen shows a la Sabrina, etc.
Ronald Reagan and Nixon gets JFK into presidential themed crypto
Mean Girls episode parody about the Salem Witch trials or Bloody Queen Mary. They write themselves.
Episode where the main cast keep finding dead bodies, basically tripping over them, parody of teen murder mysteries, twist ending that the bodies are all failed/early clones (like the clone equivalent of a stillbirth. there was no murder)
Yellow Jackets Parody episode. the bus is out of gas or something and they're stuck in a large parking lot but act like they're in the woods.
Traveling championship episode. Debate team has to compete against high school where all the students are robots programmed to behave like the greatest scientists/leaders of all time
Trans episode parody. Abe realizes he isn't aligned with the modern republican party anymore and is therefore a Democrat, treated as a self-aware bad analogy maybe to the point of other characters finding it tasteless/annoying/Abe looking for attention
Cyberbullying episode parody, bonus points if it's gossip girl
Secret cousin/twin parody episode --- obvious starting point would be like. Anastasia because of how many people famously claimed to be her.
Supernatural teen romance parody episode. Abe tries to become a vampire with like Edgar Allen Poe or someone to impress Joan.
"Save the community center" episode --- This could be a great Harriet focused episode about like a bake sale or something to fund the arts but everyone is over exaggerating the stakes and the drama of being/not being a good baker. "My grandmother used to bake these cookies for me.....until she DIED" "My mother baked these cookies for me everyday I was in the hospital after falling out of that helicopter and they gave me the strength to survive" "I can't bake....my mom was always too busy with her business to teach me....." etc.
Big Mouth/Sex Ed parody episode. I think it would be really funny if THIS had been their technology episode, like getting a computer virus is treated like getting a STD and the cast talk about browsing the internet like it's casual sex, etc.
parody of those tasteless episodes about how like bullying leads to school shootings. Have like Abe or Joan or someone try to reach out to Napoleon or someone because they eat alone at lunch and because they think it's silly and mean everyone is afraid of them but then they are just like a violent maniac already. the solution is to get rid of him.
this might sound dumb but remember that one episode of jimmy neutron where jimmy was banned from the science fair for being too smart and killing the morale of any other student interested in participating? What if Clone High did that but as like a parody of anti-trans sports legislation. All the cloned scientists are banned from the science fair because it's an unfair advantage. All the Politian clones are banned from debate club, etc.
Social media/parasocial relationships parody episode where like JFK and Abe become obsessed with one another's online accounts not knowing it's them, despite Joan repeatedly telling them this, it becomes completely unhealthy but then whenever they do hang out together face-to-face they hate it and decide the parasocial relationship was better actually.
PRANK YOUTUBE/TIKTOK PARODY EPISODE ABOUT DB COOPER AND HOUDINI COME ON COME ON COME ON THIS ONE IS SO FUCKING OBVIOUS

One Hell of a Love (Book 2) Chapter Thirteen
Sebastian Michaelis x Demon! Reader
Chapter Thirteen: One Hell of a Newcomer
Summary: A mysterious stranger appears in the Phantomhive Manor.
“—And so, we would like to look through everyone’s rooms and luggage,” said Arthur after explaining to all of the guests and servants the need to search their belongings for the key. “The ladies may check one another’s things, so you won’t have to worry about us men looking through them. What do you say?”
            “Very well,” said Irene.
“Do what you want,” huffed Woodley.
            “Go right ahead!” chirped Lau.
At least there was no fighting this time, thought (Y/N).
l
However, in the end, even going through everyone’s belongings brought nothing forward. The strangest thing to be found was a vial of red liquid in Irene’s vanity box, but after the revelation that she was twelve years older than Grimsby, (Y/N) knew it was simply an anti-aging concoction. That being said, (Y/N) had found it entertaining how nervous Mey-Rin had gotten after the discussion of Carmilla the vampire.
Now, the group had reconvened. The storm still pelted the windows; the sky was as gloomy and dismal as the group’s mood at having discovered nothing.
“So in the end, it was nowhere to be found,” said Arthur, sighing.
“At this point, we can only assume that Sebastian had already hidden it elsewhere,” said Ciel.
“Or that he threw it out the window,” pointed out Lau in one of his rare moments of serious insight. “I mean, a key’s a small thing, so if it were swept away or buried because of this storm, we’d have no hope of finding it.”
“Excuse me!” Finny stood up straight. “I’ll go look for it outside!”
“I will go look outside as well, I will!” said Mey-Rin. They both cared about Sebastian.
Ciel’s eyes widened in surprise. “While it’s true that finding it would give us a hint or two about the murderer, there’s no need to go out of your way to—”
“I-I want to get to the bottom of this!” said Finny. “I’m not very smart, so I can’t find the killer by thinking it through like you, Young Master! But I could find a key! If that key will help you solve the case even a little, I’d like to try finding it!”
He was so passionate that even (Y/N) found it endearing.
Finny and Mey-Rin turned and bolted out the door.
“Hey, you guys!” Baldroy quickly turned and bowed to the group. “Sorry, excuse us!” He ran out after them.
(Y/N) smiled softly. If there was one thing they did like about humans, it was their heart. Their hearts burned brightly, and for all the vermin and worms out there, there were also the ones that were strong and pushed through adversity without succumbing to the worst of their instincts.
Tanaka bowed to the group. “I shall ensure their safety. Mx. (Y/N), if you would look after the guests in my brief absence.”
“Yes, sir,” said (Y/N). And then Tanaka left.
“Say,” said Grimsby in the silence that followed. “Sitting here in utter silence is stifling in itself. How about we play a game of cards or something? I brought along  adeck of cards, so I’ll go to my room and get it.”
And then of there are the humans that continue on when things don’t directly affect them and ignore the issues around them, thought (Y/N).
“Please wait,” said Arthur. “If you’re going, we should all go.”
“But I’ll be right back,” said Grimsby.
“As long as we do not know who is behind these murderers, the soundest course of action is to move as a group to avoid having any more victims,” said Arthur.
Very astute. (Y/N) concealed a catlike smirk. After all, if they wanted to pick off the group, they’d strike each time one was alone. Of course, (Y/N) could just tear through them all before they could defend themselves, but sometimes a hunt was entertaining.
“True, that’s best if one of us is the guilty party,” said Lau. “If it is one of us, that is.”
“What do you mean?” asked Grimsby.
“There’s nothing to it! I meant exactly what I just said,” said Lau.
“If the murderer isn’t here among us, where are you saying he is?” asked Grey.
“For instance, he arrived before the storm and is hiding outside…something like that?” wondered Irene nervously.
“Even so, would it not be impossible for him to enter a locked room or come in out of the storm to wander about the manor without leaving footprints?” remarked Ciel.
“What if there exists a fourteenth person who can make the impossible possible?” said Lau.
“Rubbish! That could never be!” said Woodley.
“Never, you say?” said Lau. He smiled in amusement. “In this world, it’s absolutes like ‘never’ that can never be. If someone who negates that absolute is lurking in this castle and is waiting for the ideal moment in which to target out lives, he may already be closer than we think. The fourteenth guest who ought not to exist…”
“Hmph.” Woodley scoffed, but even he was disconcerted by the idea. “There’ sno way such a fantastical person can—”
‘Young Master!” shouted Baldroy as he, Mey-Rin, Finny, and Tanaka barged into the room.
“We’ve caught someone dodgy!” said Finny, holding a rope.
“Hey, get in here, you!” said Baldroy, and Finny pulled a man bound in rope into the tearoom.
(Y/N) smothered a chuckle. In a mask and simpler suit, he was unrecognizable, but (Y/N) knew his aura by heart, it was engraved with love. This was Sebastian.
The guests’ eyes widened as Lau’s prediction came true. Someone had managed to get to the manor.
“Wai—so there really was someone else?!” cried Grey, undoubtedly the most surprised since he had been committing murder already, so he didn’t think there could be another person. “Where on Earth was he hiding—?”
“You are…” Ciel recognized his butler, undoubtedly by design.
“So that means, he is the killer?!” cried Woodley.
Lau chuckled darkly and stood. “I never for a moment imagined that the fourteenth guest would himself come calling. I too am just a teensy bit taken aback.” He smiled suddenly. “So who are you?”
(Y/N) deadpanned. I really shouldn’t have expected much seriousness from him. I need to learn my lesson.
Ciel cried, “You’re back to that again?!”
“Are you asking for my name?” said Sebastian, even altering his voice.
“Long time no see, eh, Jeremy?” said Ciel.
Oh, compared to Sebastian that is an unfortunate name, thought (Y/N).
“Lord Earl, do you know this old man?” said Lau brightly.
“Old man?” muttered Sebastian, and (Y/N) smirked at him.
“Uh, yes, I do,” half-lied Ciel. “This is Vicar Jeremy Rathbone. He is a popular advisor at the local church and something of a celebrity.”
Oh, and he works for a church. What fun for Sebastian the demon, thought (Y/N), greatly entertained.
Sebastian smiled. “Please just call me plain old Jeremy.”
            “You are a…vicar?” asked Arthur.
“How can you expect me to believe a suspicious fellow like him?!” cried Woodley. “Only the fourteenth person, who has no alibi to speak of, could’ve committed the murders! Any way you slice it, it’s got to be him!”
“The logic of yours is truly nonsensical, Mr. Woodley,” said Sebastian, smirking.
(Y/N) couldn’t help a sharp grin. Sebastian was going to have fun with this role.
“How do you know my name?!” demanded Woodley.
“Oh, it’s quite obvious from the rings adorning your fingers,” said Sebastian. “Large diamonds of that size are mined in South Africa, and the unique round brilliant-cut of those diamonds is possible only with the latest polisher recently developed by the Woodley company. I have also heard that Daniel Anderson, a London jeweler, was aggressively promoting them to society ladies as the rarest of gems, still not widely available on the market, you see. Thus, if among the guests at Earl Phantomhive’s dinner party, there is one individual wearing such rare rings, he is most likely to be the president of the Woodley company. You, Mr. Woodley. Was I wrong?”
Intelligence is so attractive, thought (Y/N). They could add that to the long list of why they loved Sebastian. (Y/N) loved all of him, his essence, his heart, his strength, his power, his mind, his body and all that it could do...All it could do with them if Sebastian would just let them close enough. (Y/N) would show him that no human could ever equal them.
Arthur spoke up. “That aside, how in the world did you…rather, since when? And why are you here?”
“Dear me. Questions, questions,” said Sebastian. “You there.” He looked at Baldroy. “Open my bag, if you would.”
Baldroy opened the bag to find an owl.
“That is Mr. Sebastian’s owl, that is!” said Mey-Rin excitedly. “I-Is it dead, is it?”
“No, it was acting up, so I tranquilized it for a brief spell. It will wake up momentarily,” said Sebastian. He pointed to the leg. “Please do take a look at the letter around its leg.”
Ciel opened it, and a small irk mark appeared for a moment. (Y/N) had a suspicion Sebastian hadn’t bothered to actually writer anything to keep Ciel on his toes a little. It was exactly the type of petty revenge Sebastian would use to needle his master after going through all the trouble for him.
“Young Master! Whatever does Mr. Sebastian write?” asked Mey-Rin anxiously.
There was a pause while Ciel came up with a story. “It appears that he sent this letter to Jeremy anticipating that he himself would eventually be killed.”
“Oh, no, Mr. Sebastian…” said Mey-Rin.
“But that paper alone isn’t proof enough that he’s not the killer!” argued Grimsby. “I mean, if he managed to come here from outside of the manor, he could’ve committed last night’s murders too, right?!”
“Proving my innocence is quite simple,” said Sebastian. “Look in my coat pocket.”
(Y/N) reached into his pocket, and they were unimpressed by the wink Sebastian sent them conspiratorially. “It’s a ticket, dated from yesterday, March the twelfth, for The Lady of the Lake at the Lyceum Theatre.”
“The Lady of the Lake is indeed being performed at London’s Lyceum now,” said Irene, confirming that aspect of the story.
“Yes, last night, I went to the Lyceum Theatre in London,” said Sebastian. “The performance ended well past ten at night. Even if I’d caught a hansom cab and slipped the driver a sovereign to rush over here, it would have taken over two hours to reach this manor. Moreover, the streets are a veritable quagmire of mud, what with all the rain, so it would have taken nearly twice as long as usual.”
“You came by hansom in this downpour?” said Irene.
“I bet the river’s overflowin’ its banks with the storm, so there’s no way a cab coulda made it over the bridge,” said Baldroy.
“Of course there are any number of ways to get here. On foot, by swimming…though to be fair, they are none of them ways I would recommend to average folk,” said Sebastian. “There are as many means to an end as there are stars in the sky. However, the fact remains that there exists but one truth.”
Poor Sebastian. (Y/N) watched him, entertained. He has to go so far to not lie outright. He is as tricky as the fae.
“Since you were in London last night, you could not have been involved with the murders,” said Arthur. “Is this the truth of which you speak?”
“Leave it to the masterly novelist to help me save my breath,” said Sebastian.
            Arthur blinked. “What?”
“It’s a simple feat to tell a person’s occupation and such from their clothing and habits,” said Sebastian. “First, you have a large writer’s callus on the middle finger of your right hand, and its shape differs from that of those who draw or paint…in other words, it goes to show just how much you write. Next, that blue smudge on your sleeve. This can happen when laundering fabric to which ink has adhered. And lastly…you have made a habit of noting on your cuffs with pencil story ideas as they strike you so you do not forget.” Sebastian glanced down Arthur’s cuff. “Pearl…India…secret room…sign. Only a writer would do something like that, hm?”
“Amazing, you’re like Dr. Bell, who was once my professor,” said Arthur.
“Observing human beings is my hobby, you see,” said Sebastian. “Well, now that I’ve relieved you of any suspicions towards toward me, would you untie me at once? It seems this manor is bursting with the fragrance of a heady mystery that will relieve my tedium.”
(Y/N) pulled a knife from their skirts and cut him free. They smiled at him, sharp. “Please, dear Jeremy, sit.”
“Thank you.” Sebestian bowed and kissed (Y/N)’s hand in greeting. Then, he sat, and the group explained the entire situation to him.
“—And that covers everything which took place from the time of the first murder until the butler who summoned you was killed,” said Arthur.
“I see. I find it all very curious indeed,” said Sebastian. “May I examine the corpses first? They will speak to me of the bare facts most elegantly.
Arthur nodded. “Very well. Let us make for the wine cellar below.”
            “Stop!” said Sebastian sternly.
            “Eh?” asked Arthur.
“Please carry each body to a separate room,” said Sebastian.
“May I ask why?” said Arthur.
“Even the various scents of a case may yield clues. If the corpses are laid out together, their individual smells will mingle and contaminate,” said Sebastian. “And in a wine cellar, the scent of wine is especially strong. So would you be kind enough to lend us three rooms, Earl Phantomhive?”
“Alright,” said Ciel, standing. “Finny, Baldroy, move the bodies.”
“Yes, sir,” they said, hurrying off to prepare the rooms.
As the servants left and the guests murmured to one another, (Y/N) smirked at Sebastian. Barely moving their lips, they spoke. “Excellent cover.”
“Before you are too amused, know that I’ll need you to cause a distraction,” said Sebastian, similarly throwing his voice before stepping out of the room to “follow the servants” (really go back under the cloth himself to pose as his corpse).
            “Work, work, work,” sighed (Y/N).
l
“Young Master, we’re done relocating the bodies,” said Baldroy a few minutes later.
“Right then.” Sebastian clapped his hands. “Shall we take a closer look at the corpses in the order they were murdered?”
“So it would be Lord Siemens first, yes?” said Arthur.
“I’m coming with you, too!” chirped Grey.
“This way,” said (Y/N), leading the group. “The corpses of Simens, Phelps, and Sebastian have been set out in order,” they explained as they led the way to a hall.
“Much obliged, my dear,” said Sebastian. He couldn't help but allow himself a moment of affection. He needed (Y/N) to know that he felt for them more than he could any other being in existence.
(Y/N) glanced at Sebastian, surprised by the term of affection. It wasn’t strictly necessary for his acting, so they hadn’t expected it. It wasn’t…terrible, though. They rather liked it. What else would he call them if they were more than just friends?
Sebastian walked into the room with Siemens’s body. “Hm…” He knelt. “He has but one external injury, the wound to his chest. Stabbed once with a sharp blade, I would say.” He pulled out Siemens’s pocket watch. “This man was none too pleasant when he was drunk, was he?”
“What makes you say that?” said Grey.
“Oh, it was quite clear the minute I saw this,” said Sebastian. “Here we have a very expensive-looking pocket watch, but there are numerous scratches around the key wind. Only a terrible bore or a drunkard would do such a thing, don’t you agree? And this pungent odor of alcohol is proof that he was drinking spirits of considerable strength right up till the moment of his death…Oh?”
“What is it?” remarked (Y/N), letting Sebastian show off.
“I detect an ever-so-slight scent of the sea…” said Sebastian.
“The sea?” said Arthur. Grey’s eyes darkened for a moment.
“Ah, Professor, would you happen to carry a handkerchief?” said Sebastian.
“Ah, yes,” said Arthur. “Here you are.”
Sebastian took it and stuffed it into Siemens’s mouth.
“Hey, now, just a—!” Arthur deflated as his handkerchief was rendered unusable.
“Hm…” Sebastian examined it. “Thank you so very much.” He handed it back. “Now! Mr. Phelps is next, I do believe?”
He crossed into the next room, and Arthur pointed at the body.
“The manner of his death alone differed from that of the other two,” he said. “I think it likely that he was injected with a poison via the puncture wounds on his neck. At the time of his death, the only entrance to the room was locked, created a perfect locked room scenario.”
“I see,” said Sebastian, examining the marks on Phelps’s neck. “May I take a look at the room in which he met his end?” For a moment, his eyes met (Y/N)’s, and they took it as a cue. (Y/N) suspected he needed a moment to switch Phelps’s body to where his own body should be to keep up appearances.
“Let me show you,” said (Y/N), leading the way and pulling Ciel, Arthur, and Grey’s attention as they headed up the stairs.
“Vicar Jeremy’s powers of observation are quite extraordinary, so he might notice something we missed in there,” remarked Arthur.
“Hm?” Grey happened to turn on the stairs and found no one behind him. He huffed. “That old man isn’t with us?”
            “Jeremy?” called Ciel.
“Right behind you!” said Sebastian, appearing on the stairs below. “I apologize for making you wait. Come, let’s be off.”
            He managed it, thought (Y/N).
“This is why I can’t stand old men,” complained Grey as they entered Ciel’s room.
Sebastian examined the entire bedroom carefully before nodding his head somberly. “It would appear there exist multiple villains in this case.”
            The humans’ eyes widened.
“So that’s how it is after all,” said Ciel.
“Catching Lord Siemens’s killer will be simple enough, but catching Mr. Phelps’s killer will be rather difficult work,” said Sebastian. “And securing the latter ought to be our first priority to prevent any more loss of life.”
It’s a snake, decided (Y/N), privately betting on it. Sebastian would never allow a threat any bigger than an animal come near Ciel in his own home.
“Anyhow, no persons will be able to set out of the manor in this storm,” said Sebastian.
“What are you talking about?” asked Arthur.
“There are two conditions which must be met in order for us to capture Phelps’s killer,” said Sebastian. “The first is to wait for nightfall, the second is…your cooperation, Earl Phantomhive.”
            “My cooperation?” asked Ciel.
“Yes, yours,” said Sebastian. “Let us discuss all the details this evening.”
“So now it’s the butler’s turn, right? Let’s go back,” said Grey.
(Y/N) and Sebastian’s eyes met. (Y/N) knew they’d have to make a little distraction for Sebastian to “investigate” his death without the others seeing his body.
They walked into the room with “Sebastian’s” body, and Sebastian knelt by it.
“If I recall, I’d heard that the butler was stabbed to death after being bludgeoned,” said Sebastian. “I do beg your pardon, my good man.”
Of course he compliments himself, thought (Y/N), nose twitching.
Sebastian lifted the corner of the cloth to reveal the arm of the body, and (Y/N) took their cue. “Oh!” They cried out, lifting a hand to their head and stumbling as if feint.
“O-Oh!” said Arthur, genuinely worried. “What’s wrong? Are you quite well?” Everyone’s attention turned to (Y/N).
“Forgive me…” they said, playing up the tremble of their voice. “To see my friend’s body yet again…it’s so terrible…”
            “Are you alright?” said Arthur.
“Perhaps a break, if you’d like,” said Ciel, keeping the distraction up.
Behind them, Sebastian finished his “examination” of the body. “The butler was killed most simply,” he declared, and everyone turned back to him.
“Ah, perfect!” said Grey. “It’ll be dinnertime before long! I’m famiiiished! I wonder what’s on the menu today?”
“I’m not sure. Shall I inquire with the servants?” said Ciel as they exited the room.
“Nah. Don’t bother,” said Grey. “I’ll look forward to the surprise. I’m heading back first.”
He’s going to double back and ensure Sebastian’s corpse is really Sebastian’s corpse. (Y/N)’s nose twitched. Grey truly was frustrating.
“Well, now, shall we return to?” said Sebastian. “(Y/N) and I need to see the evening’s preparations so do go on ahead.”
“Yes,” said Arthur and Ciel, turning and leaving.
            “You’ve got Grey?” said (Y/N).
“Yes,” said Sebastian. “Start the preparations for dinner.”
“Yes, ‘Jeremy,’ ” said (Y/N) with a smirk.

I’ve seen some people getting really angry at The Boys for excluding Mina because “they think she’s frail.” I think this is a mischaracterization of their motives. Here’s how Van Helsing explains his reasoning:
“It is not good that she run a risk so great. We men are determined—nay, are we not pledged?—to destroy this monster; but it is no part for a woman. Even if she be not harmed, her heart may fail her in so much and so many horrors; and hereafter she may suffer—both in waking, from her nerves, and in sleep, from her dreams. And, besides, she is young woman and not so long married; there may be other things to think of some time, if not now.”
Van Helsing isn’t saying she’s too weak. He’s saying he’s afraid to risk her. It’s classic Victorian chivalry: annoying and sexist, yes, but not (in this case) based on thinking she’s too WEAK.
This is a really dangerous thing they’re going to do. It’s dangerous for all of them, not just for Mina, and he’s afraid of her getting hurt. It was considered extremely dishonorable for a man to put a woman in danger. Even in 20th century murder mysteries (Sayers, Marsh) you see male detectives being upset when their evidence points to a female murderer because they don’t want to be the reason even that a GUILTY woman hangs for her crime! Remember how important masculine honor is to men in this period: When Van Helsing asks Arthur to trust him blindly, Arthur actually mentions his honor before even his religion! (”if it be anything in which my honour as a gentleman or my faith as a Christian is concerned, I cannot make such a promise.”)
It’s not just physical danger they’re afraid of exposing her to, but psychological danger. None of them was at all surprised that Jonathan had mental health problems after his run-in with Dracula (and honestly, knowing something about PTSD myself, while it’s true that realizing it was all real could have helped him a LOT, it would likely NOT have produced this entire recuperation we’re seeing in this story). A lot of people have pointed out that the getting upset and hysterical thing happens to men just as much (if not more) than women in this story, so I think it’s even doubtful that they’re worried that Mina will be MORE affected because she’s a woman: they’re just acknowledging that even if she doesn’t get hurt physically, she could be hurt psychologically, which would also make them feel awful.
Added to this at the end is a mention of the fact that Mina may be pregnant: if putting a woman in danger is dishonorable, putting a pregnant woman in danger is unthinkable. (Remember that even today, most of us go out of our way to protect pregnant women in a way that we do with few other populations.) And if she’s not pregnant now, she’s still likely to have children later, and Victorians believed that mental stress in the mother could have real physical effects on children. (This... actually is true, just not in the way the Victorians thought it worked!) So they would be endangering, not only Mina, but her potential unborn children. (Remember that this is also a period that does not have widespread access to contraceptives, so everybody would be assuming that Mina probably IS going to have kids at some point, because she’s married and IS having unprotected sex.)
So basically, it’s not that they think Mina is weak or frail. It’s that they feel it is their duty according to social customs to not allow a woman to be harmed physically or psychologically, or to allow her potential unborn children to be harmed. It’s not that women are in a special box marked “Weak and frail”, it’s that women are in a special box marked “PROTECT AT ALL COSTS”.
Is this kind of chivalry now recognized as a hindrance to women’s freedom and ability to participate in society as equals to men? Yep. But it’s not QUITE the same thing as “They think she’s weak!”
Also, iirc, the fact that they’ve excluded her is going to come back to bite them on the asses anyway, so it’s possible Stoker is actually going to use this to Make a Point about not excluding women from things.

A Great Detective's Beginning
I think I've said before that Sherlock Holmes is a character I greatly admire. Ever since reading about his adventures in a huge omnibus collection of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's work, I wanted to emulate the great detective in all things with a doctor companion by my side. The art of observation was something I attempted to train my younger self in by studying the fingers of a stranger or the scuffs on their shoes for just a hint of what it might tell me about their life.
Unfortunately, it's not every day one stumbles on a murder. Second, it's not like many a policeman would allow a random civilian to take part in their investigations. Life, it seems, is unlike the world of my many stories. A shame, really. I feel like I would have been an excellent sidekick to the great Sherlock Holmes.
Since my childhood dream is but an impossibility, playing as Sherlock Holmes in a series of video games has become the next best thing for someone like me.
Tumblr media
Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One released in 2021 and was developed by Frogwares, a video game developer headquartered in Ukraine. Over the years, I've played many a game that they've churned out. While the quality is middling at best - given the studio straddles the line of indie developer and triple-A studio - there is something endearing about their games that keep me coming back for more. Jankiness be damned!
Chapter One is set in Sherlock's younger years before he meets his erstwhile companion, Dr John Watson. While the game demonstrates that Sherlock has always had a special talent for deduction, there is an uncertainty to the character that we meet as he ponders the best way to utilise the truth. For example, one of the latter cases involved handing over incriminating evidence of a leading political leader of Cordona to better the lives of all African refugees. True, Sherlock could publish the information and see another corrupt politician fall, but doing so would not serve to benefit many an individual. Nor would it see restitution to the victim.
But I'm getting ahead of myself.
Chapter One centres on Sherlock visitng the island of Cordona, a fictional island that feels like it borrows elements from Cyprus and Malta's history. Our not-quite-great detective arrives to visit his mother's, Violet Holmes, grave. Upon immediately disembarking, he is embroiled in one mystery of another sparked by a challenge from his companion, Jon.
The Jon that stars in Chapter One is no doctor, however. Rather, he is Sherlock's imaginary friend. Because of this, Frogwares is able to incorporate their janky gameplay for narrative purposes, such as the teleporting John Watson from the good old days, the vanishing and clipping of Jon as he fades in and out of existence, or the fact that he is able to walk up walls.
He's not real to the people of Cordona and is a figment of Sherlock's imagination.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This plays into the story of the game as well, culminating in a showdown as Sherlock reckons with a traumatic event from the past. While I didn't like the choices that eventuated - agreeing with many people on Reddit that the logic Sherlock incorporated in his assessment of what had happened to his mother when he was ten was a little harsh - I did very much being given the opportunity to take a peek at a Sherlock before the one many of us fans see in his first novel appearance: A Study in Scarlet.
From a gameplay perspective, Chapter One incorporated many elements from the previous games including the mind palace and the connecting of clues to make deductions. Though 221b Baker Street didn't exist, Sherlock was able to make use of the archives in the city of Cordona and seemingly carried a box of chemicals with him to deduce whatever strange fluid he stumbled upon. This streamlined a lot of the gameplay from older games and also made sense from a story narrative.
My main issue, of course, was failing to take into consideration elements of the environment or character writing/ behaviour when making my deductions to certain cases and allowing my own biases to shine through. For example, the very first case. I very much wanted it to be the prone-to-anger partner, who acted like a rich entitled arsehole.
Alas, it was the poor spirit medium.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The other cases didn't have such clear cut culprits, with many open to interpretation. Fortunately, there were three major side quests that were able to fill the void left open by the need to have a very obvious antagonist - leading up to Sherlock wowing them with his deductive prowess before breaking down.
This added additional flavour to the island of Cordona, even as it worried me that so many murders or accidental manslaughter could be happening in and around the island.
Still, as a mystery nut, I very much appreciated how much of these cases Frogwares scattered throughout the game and probably would have preferred some more if I'm being perfectly honest.
Then, of course, there were the combat elements Frogwares included in their game. While previous titles didn't have as much action sequences beyond a few quick-time action button presses, here, Sherlock was facing off against various thugs. Most of these involved stunning them by shooting at weakpoints (such as their hat or a molotov cocktail strapped to their back) before rushing forward to knock them out.
While these encounters added a little spice to the usual 'go here' and 'search for clues' aspect of the game, these elements did also become quite repetitive due to how little these elements changed from encounter to encounter.
Overall, I enjoyed my time with Chapter One much more than I did Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong solely because of how open the game world was and how much it tickled the itch I had to deduct the events of what happened. While I appreciated Jon's commentary of my greatness, I was also aggrieved when certain things I did, which felt logical at the time, were gated by how the game wished for Sherlock to proceed with a certain clue or piece of information.
In the end, though Chapter One still made me feel like I knew what I was doing. And honestly, that's probably the only real way to make a consulting detective of a modern-day 30 year-old woman who grew up reading tales of Victorian England and obsessing over the BBC version of Sherlock in the year of 2010, starring the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

warnings: swearing
I rubbed my forehead as I took another sip from my cup, draining it in one go. The noise of another cup being put down made me look up. Jim stood there with a case file under one arm, cup of coffee in his hand and a smile on his face.
“late night? Or early morning?” He asked, pressing a kiss to my head as he moved to sit next to me. I rubbed my eyes and grabbed his hand, tilting it to catch a look at his watch.
“Both I think.” I said, letting go of his hand. Jim chuckled and leaned over to flip through the file in front of me. “Maybe I should head to bed.” I said, rubbing my face before leaning into Jim.
“want me to join you?” He asked, pulling back to look at me. I shrugged. “Yeah I’ll come with. I can read a file in bed. It’s fine.”
“you’re commissioner. You can do what you want.” I yawned as I stood up. Jim took my hand as he walked with me back to our bedroom. I climbed into bed and he waited until I was comfortable before climbing in next to me. I moved over to lay on his chest while jim wrapped his arm around me, file laying open on his lap.
“I’ll wake you in a couple hours.” I groaned as I turned my head into his chest to block out the light. “You need to eat. I’ll make you something. Don’t worry about it.” I nodded and let myself drift off. When I woke up later, my face was turned into a pillow and Jim was walking in with a tray of food. “Afternoon sleepy head.” He teased, setting down the tray and leaning in to kiss me.
“thought you said it would only be a couple hours.” I grumbled, brushing the hair out of my face as I looked over the tray. Jim smiled as he brought it closer. “You didn’t need to make this much food.”
“thought you deserved it.” Jim shrugged. “After pulling an all nighter like you did.” I nodded as I started to eat. “That file? What’s it on?” I swallowed my mouth full and smiled at him.
“case study. Thought I’d take a look at some of the older cold cases.” Jim nodded. “It’s some of the older joker murders.”
“I thought we solved all of those.” Jim’s said as he stole a piece of toast off the tray.
“the Arthur fleck ones.” I said, covering my mouth while I ate. “The original joker.” Jim rolled his eyes and I laughed. “Yeah I know. It also takes me across the Wayne murders and i thought i was seeing something there. Maybe some way to tie them to him and actually make them stick this time.” I shrugged while Jim looked impressed with me. “I’ll have to look again but I’m thinking now that I’ve slept and ate, maybe there wasn’t really something there at all.”
“well if anyone can find it, it’s you.” Jim assured me. “I’d be happy to help if you need it.” I nodded as we continued to eat. “Any other plans for the rest of the day?”
“depends. What do you have in mind?” I asked. “I might be able to be persuaded to put the file on hold.” Jim leaned over and kissed me deeply, one hand on my cheek.
“I can think of a few things.” He said, pulling back slightly as I trailed after him.
“you drive a hard bargain commissioner.” I teased him. “But I think I’m in agreement.” Pulling him back with me as I laid back, I kissed him just as deeply.

Hitman/RWBY crossover: "Agent 47, tonight you will be visiting Schnee Manor to deal with four priority targets. There names are Arthur Watts, Hazel Reinhardt, Tyrian Callows, and Cinder Fall.
"Arthur Watts is a disgraced Atlesian Scientist, presumed to have perished in the disastrous 'Paladin Incident' many years ago. However, we recently uncovered that he wrote the computer virus that allowed Ms. Fall to hijack the Vytal Festival broadcast, and our sources indicate he will be personally meeting with Jacques Schnee during tonight's gala.
"Hazel Reinhardt is the only surviving family member of the late Huntress in Training, Gretchel Reinhardt. He blamed Ozpin for her death, and has been murdering Huntsmen and Huntresses across the globe in an attempt to destroy the system that took his sister from him. That might seem contradictory, but he appears to be acting under the direction of Watts' benefactor.
"I'm sure you're aware of Tyrian Callows. The most infamous serial killer to ever plague the continent of Anima. He mysteriously vanished in a Grimm attack while being transported to prison, but it would appear as though the Grimm were actually rescuing him, under the direction of Arthur's and Hazel's leader.
"Cinder Fall is somewhere in the vicinity. The mastermind behind the attacks on Beacon and Haven Academies. Or at least, that's what she wants us to think. In actuality, she's taking orders from a higher power.
"This is Salem. The agent who sent us this photo perished, and he wasn't even the one to take it. She cannot die. If you see her, RUN! She can control the Grimm, and she turned Ms. Fall into something that isn't entirely human, granting the young woman abilities beyond your imagination. She is not a target. Avoid her at all costs. In a worst case scenario, take off her head. That should keep her busy for a few seconds.
"This jellyfish-like Grimm is called a Seer. Salem uses them to communicate with her subordinates, and coordinate her Grimm minions from a distance. Only take it out if it is the only way to prevent Salem from seeing you, as Salem WILL notice if one of them dies.
"Your mission? You need to kill all four of her known direct subordinates. Her goal is the complete erasure of our species, and I can imagine you understand why we don't want that.
"Good luck, Agent 47, the fate of Remnant is in your hands."
HELL YEAH

You shimmered like an angel, sang like one too, but those who saw your face never lived to tell the tale.
Every soldier you treated died peacefully in his sleep.
You sat at their bedside and ensured that they didn’t die alone. You sang them into eternal sleep and came back every night.
Thomas can hear your sweet and soothing voice as you walk to where he and his brothers are. Most of them had been only mildly injured from the tunnel collapse, but Tommy was the only one whom the doctors and other nurses lied to about his prognosis.
Something was wrong, something they thought could go away on its own, but isn’t.
When he sees your face, he knows he is dying.
“Are you comfortable, Thomas?” you ask as you fluff his pillow and then moves to light his last cigarette.
“Better now that you are here.” He said thinking why not.
You were a beauty, blonde hair, warm blue eyes and an innocent look about you.
You sang good, but it wasn’t something to brag about. You were Irish or sounded like someone’s imitation of an Irish woman.
And tonight you would sing him to hell where he belonged.
In a neat little town they call Belfast
Apprentice to a trade I was bound
And many's an hour's sweet happiness
Have I spent in this neat little town.
A sad misfortune came over me
Which caused me to stray from the land
Far away from my friends and relations
Betrayed by the black velvet band.
He falls asleep and for the first time in years he doesn’t hear the shovels.
The next morning Thomas woke up screaming bloody murder.
He had dreamt of you, of meeting you in the Garrison where you were a barmaid.
Your name had been Grace and you had been a spy sent to fuck him over and his family, the two of you had fallen in love despite it all, and he had killed you.
He had killed you because he had started a feud with the Changrettas and gotten into some fucked up mess with some Russian Aristocrats.
In his fright he had not noticed his mysterious malady had resolved itself and even jumped out of his bed like it had burned him.
“Some dream you had, eh ,Tommy?” Arthur asks and hands him water in a dented tin cup.
“Yeah, fucking dream I had.” He drinks and grounds himself by focusing on the metal taste of the cold water.
---
Somewhere in Ireland, Grace Helen Burgess falls asleep and never wakes up. All that is known is that a middle aged maid who sang as she cleaned tucked her into bed and sang her the lullaby her mother used to sing to her before she died.
“She would have died anyways, poor thing, but at least Tommy will not have to suffer in this second chance you bought him.” The sweet singing woman tells Polly Gray as they tidy up the betting shop.

Ranking All Books by Holly Jackson
Since I've read all of Holly's books, I'm going to rank them! Disclaimer: This is my opinion. If we don't have the same opinion, then respect that. Let's go!
Warning: this may contain spoilers for all books published by Holly Jackson. If you don't want to be spoiled, then scroll away.
6. Killjoy (2021)
Tumblr media
I found this story cute! Very fun and fast-paced. I loved seeing how it all started and loved seeing the friend group's dynamic again. I just found this to not be the best out of all of Holly's books (granted this is a novella, but it's not my fave). Also, too much Ant Lowe in my opinion. I would have preferred more Jamie Reynolds. Also, I personally think Connor and Zach should've kissed but oh well.
Overall, fun book! If you wanna go back to where it all started, then this novella is worth it.
5. Five Survive (2022)
Tumblr media
Guys... I have a reason why this book is ranked so low. I'm going to start by saying that I did not hate this book. I found the story intriguing and was engaged once the action started. For her first standalone, this book was really good and exceeded my expectations. My main problem with this book was that I found that I could care less about the characters. Personally, I found Red Kenny to be a weak protagonist in comparison to Pip and Bel and, not to mention how I could care less about Red and Arthur. Red and Arthur are cute, but honestly, I could care less if they got together or not.
Again, I don't hate this book. For Holly's first standalone, it was really good. However, I found that I didn't really care for any of the characters.
Overall, good book! Wish I connected more to the characters because the premise is incredible.
4. Good Girl, Bad Blood (2020)
Tumblr media
All books in the AGGGTM series are five star reads in my opinion, but I find this the weakest book in the trilogy. Honestly, I love this book with my whole heart. Coming from being Connor Reynolds's biggest fan, I love how much he appeared in this book and how he aided in finding Jamie.
I think this book suffers from what I've dubbed "Sequel Slump" - meaning that the first book is so good that the sequel "slumps" in comparison. In this case, A Good Girl's Guide to Murder is so good that this book just "slumps" in comparison, and I think it's because it takes a while for the mystery to officially begin, since we're taken through a quick recap over the previous book's events and then the memorial.
Also, I personally think that Connor and Zach should've kissed. Connor going to Zach's house to play Fortnite after the memorial? Very fruity to me (joking... or am I?)
Overall, love this book. Wish it got more recognition in the fandom.
3. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (2019)
Tumblr media
LOVE THIS BOOK. This book is fast-paced, thrilling and mysterious. It has a healthy dose of mystery and romance, along with characters I truly felt interested in. Pip's an amazing protagonist who fought hard to prove Sal innocent and find the real killer under the guise of her EPQ, all as she got the guy (Ravi Singh) in the end.
I loved that this book kept me guessing until the very end. I was suspecting everyone (Max, Jason, Naomi, Elliot, etc) and was genuinely surprised finding out Elliot killed Sal. Holly had written him to be such a likeable person that I couldn't believe he would kill Sal just so he could frame him as Andie's killer. AND BECCA? Never would've guessed it. Holly Jackson knows how to write compelling thrillers and I love that for her.
My only real complaint is again, Zach and Connor should've kissed. Connor honey I get that you liked Pip, but Zach Chen is literally right there. You boys are soulmates and I pray that the show recognises that (along with LauCara).
Overall, AMAZING BOOK. Deserves all the hype!
2. As Good as Dead (2021)
Tumblr media
AHHHHH I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH. THIS BOOK IS HOW YOU END A TRILOGY GUYS. From the beginning, I was hooked by the mystery of Pip's stalker. This book broke my heart with Andie's email - poor girl was so scared of her father and died trying to escape him. I really like how this book doesn't give Andie a full redemption arc, rather it explains her actions. It really humanises Andie - a girl who grew up in a toxic environment and died trying to save herself and her sister.
My heart shattered when Pip broke up with Ravi. AND HIS SUGGESTION WAS TO MARRY SO THEY COULD GET SPOUSAL PRIVILEDGE??? RAVI FUCKING SINGH WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME???
The ending? EVIL. FUCKING EVILLLL BUT I LOVE HOLLY EITHER WAY. In my heart, I believe Pip got back together with him and they married. They also got another golden retriever in my mind after they got married.
Only complaint was WHERE WAS ZACH CHEN? CONNOR AND HIM SHOULD'VE KISSED WTF. Not to mention Lauren and Cara... Love my girl Steph though. Hoping that Lauren and Cara are a thing in the show though since we don't know much about Steph.
Overall, BEST BOOK IN THE TRILOGY GUYS.
The Reappearance of Rachel Price (2024)
Tumblr media
HOLY FUCKING SHIT.
THIS BOOK... I WILL ONLY SAY ONE WORD: BRILLIANT.
When Holly Jackson said that this book was her favourite, I can see why it is. While I struggled to get into it from the beginning, once I read past 100 pages, I was hooked. Bel Price is such a complex protagonist that I could find myself relating to. All the characters were just so complex and you truly don't know who's lying until the very end, when we find out (spoiler alert) that Charlie (Bel's dad) had ordered his father to kill Rachel.
Not to mention how insane the sibling plotline was??? I NEVER WOULD HAVE SUSPECTED THAT CARTER WAS RACHEL'S BIOLOGICAL DAUGHTER. My heart broke when Rachel spoke about how Patrick took Carter away from her when Carter was only two weeks old. The Price family are truly disgusting - Rachel, Bel and Carter deserved so much better.
Also, I preferred the romance between Ash and Bel over Arthur and Red. Ash is such a fun character and I was genuinely sad when him and Bel weren't endgame. I believe that one day, in the near future, they reunite and get together officially.
Overall, LOVE THIS BOOK. If you haven't picked this up yet, then do so now!
