ok other than Groose, who would be the top ten characters you would add to Hyrule Warriors? And while you’re at it, is there anyone you wish was in Age of Calamity that didn’t make it?
Alright:
1. Groose
2. Rusl
3. Ashei
4. Linebeck (obviously 💀)
5. Byrne
6. Nabooru
7. Wolf Link (HE COULD WORK!!)
8. Vaati
9. Saria
10. Malo. Why not. I want to kill monsters with a baby
And a character I would like to see in AOC… hm… well I did mention Astor being playable. I would also like Kass lol. Idk why, he’d be a lovely addition.

So like… you have Vaati in your au, right? Is he an antagonist and if so at what point does he start problems?
ok...so I finally get to talk abt this
a while back when I was still in the early stages of my comic I got myself thinking about the story and how I'll write the antagonists, Malice King, Kohga, and Vaati. However the more I thought about it I realized that I had more story for Malice King and Kohga than for Vaati. It was tricky for me to think of a role Vaati would do, all ideas I had fit much better for Malice King or for Kohga.
Ultimately I decided to scrap Vaati out of my au WHICH IS A SHAME love that little mous but I feel like it was already too much going one having 3 antagonists in my story. I don't have the talent to write three bad guys at once, and realizing Vaati got the short end of the stick when thinking up of ideas I ultimately decided it was best to scrap them out of my au
Im so sorry Vaati Nation </3

Ok ok so I got a chance to sort out my thoughts this update in server but ohhhh this update was DELICIOUS this conflict is sooooo good
See, this is sort of the fall out of all these various secrets starting to be dragged into the light. Before, they were left alone out of sensitivity. But now they're being discovered, and because of the already strained tensions, things aren't necessarily going well.
I LOVE the attention to detail with these reactions to the crystal. So, now, to really understand what's happening, the big thing to consider is what the Twilight Crystal is. It's, ultimately, a form of dark magic, ableit a strange offshoot of it.
Now, consider that its some form of strange dark magic that is stopping Twilight from being healed magically for reasons yet unclear. The reactions this is garnering are very interesting
One, they're excessively worried about anything related to any kind of dark magic. Understandable, when combined with their past involvements with this kind of thing.
Two, because this is new and not making sense, they're thinking back on their own experiences with strange and terrible dark magics. All of their past encounters are forefront in their mind, so when confronted with yet another instance of dark magic, they try and apply their knowledge to it.
So, in summary, this is what's happening with the main three in this update
Four who firsthand has seen what can happen when people mess with magic they shouldn't. His first thought is of Vaati, the Minish turned demon by a dark artifact. He knows that even people who weren't necessarily bad can turn bad when under something's influence, and now he's concerned about what that could do to Twilight.
Wind who tends to believe the best in people, so he doesn't agree with Four's assessment of corruption. What he is familiar though with is mind control/possession. He's thinking of Bellum, who forced him to fight a friend. What if this crystal allows a conduit for something to do that to Twilight?
Legend, who is the only one out of the Chain aside from Twilight who has firsthand experience with this curse. He knows what it does, how it works, what if feels like to be under its influence. After all, it happened to him too, as we're all very aware. He's also aware that the darkness can be purged by the full powered Master Sword. He's trying to express this to the others, but the high emotions of the moment...
I just really like the application of their experiences in the past to how they're percieving the current situation. What has up until now mostly been a boon (a variety of knowledge aiding in unique ways to combat enemies and help each other) has turned into a point of conflict, as they each feel their perspective is important and grate on each other as they feel as though the others aren't listening.
And, of course, as Sky said, those of the Hero's Spirit aren't a patient sort, and don't like sitting around doing nothing when someone is in need of help.
All very good. Shoutout to Jojo for the writing here

12.
Mmm don't think I've shared this HC here before: Zelda I Zelda is about the same age as Link, but Zelda II Zelda is 10-20 years older (and for the avoidance of doubt: NOT romantically involved with Link). This comes down to the fact that of all the things AoL!Link (or Hyrule) could have used his wish on, Impa told him to awaken Zelda. Not to save the land, not to stop the Cult of Ganon, just to wake a legendary princess from long, long ago from her magical slumber. And maybe I'm reading into a simplistic Sleeping Beauty-ish plot a bit too much, but there must have been a reason for that, right? Preferably a reason beyond "16-year-old Link marries the 16-year old Zelda who literally just woke up, thus becoming King of Hyrule and fixing everything somehow".
So no: let's instead say that sleeping beauty Zelda, as the rightful successor of the king before her (which is I think canon? Or at least implied?) is the last great ruler of Hyrule who happens to be a tactical genius and received the power/knowledge to control the Palace Guardians that the king before her created. Or something along those lines. Give her some agency. And some life experience. Also that ending scene can be a totally platonic hug if you want it to be. There, I said it.
(Obvious disclaimer: ship and let ship, it's ok if your HC is different to mine.)
13.
ZORA. They're the coolest Zelda race imo. Especially the N64 Majora's Mask version. Swimming would be so much more fun if you could do graceful dolphin dives and also produce magical electricity, then pause to play underwater bone guitar while laying eggs and presumably not having periods. Fish life for me.
14.
Gonna be honest: I'm a fake fan who loves LU fanon (and LoZ canon) way more than the actual comic. But from what I recall, I don't think they've actually fought anything that's talked back yet? That'd be fun.
Not that fights with unintelligent monsters are bad per se, but the Zelda series has a lot of talkative baddies. Ganondorf, obviously, but also Ghirahim, Master Kohga, Veran, Onox, Vaati, Vire, Yuga, Blind, Zant, King Bulblin, Twinrova and more. Volga, Wizzro and Cia from Hyrule Warriors. Sohga from Age of Calamity. And all the sassy Nightmares from Link's Awakening, of course. Hell, wheel out the Moblin King and his cronies.
Idk. If the queer-coded monster isn't snapping out clever quips while they transform into a giant blobby turtle and/or bumblebee, what is even the point?
Thanks for the ask!! 💜

LU Headcanon’s Part 2: Electric Boogaloo
THE EDGY BOOOOOYY
[Legend it’s Legend’s turn]
Would rather saw off his legs than wear pants
Could and would probably slap Hylia if given the chance
These are my headcanons so therefore I make the rules and so I say he is 100% engaged to Ravio
Legend is an insomniac, and has gone a total of 71 hours and 42 minutes without crashing before
Is absolute besties with Hilda and Styla, despite one being from another country and the other being from an alternate dimension, it doesn’t stop him
“Bureaucracy will never beat a shift iron rod to the kneecaps.”
Agender icon [He/She/It]
!!Hyrule!!A baby!!
Can’t read, and therefore can’t read a map [hence getting lost at any given point] because he was never taught how
“Yes, ma’am/sir!”
Wouldn’t often go into large towns in his Hyrule, and is often overwhelmed and scared of large crowds, so when they go to another or go to a town in their current one, will cling to Legend’s arm like a baby koala
“There are young and innocent ears in the room, and by that I mean Roolie.” “Gah?!”
I’m pretty sure it’s LoZ canon that he would be blood-relatives with Legend so I’m gonna make him and Legend have similar mannerisms and faces [Hyrule has a more rounded/babyish face and button nose, while Legend has sharper eyes and flat yet tall nose]
They have the same confused and pouting expressions
Even more broke™
Snorts when he laughs
Twirls a lock of hair on his neck when nervous
It’s fucking WIMDY
Wind’s Hylian is based on Polynesian [Mainly Samoan, Tokelauan, and Tuvaluan]
“I lived on a WARSHIP-“ ok I’ll stop
The absolute BEST BIG BROTHER in the W O R L D
Uses the word fuck like a comma
Probably a medium
Misses Linebeck :[[
Has a thing with large birds, things like seagulls and small birds he has no problem, but if there any larger than half his size he’ll lock up, and will always make sure it’s where he can see it
Has to keep a notebook of EVERYTHING after Phantom Hourglass, cause he still isn’t entirely sure if the journey actually happened or if it was just one big hallucination caused by the Ghost Ship
Wind and Tetra’s love language is beating the shit outta one another
The OG problem child
Loves Sun so fucking much he cannot even stand it
Princess Peach lips mf
Is a narcoleptic
Has trouble breathing on the surface, it’s hardly ever too serious unless he seriously overexerts himself but there will pretty much always be a slight wheeze to his breathing
Is mostly stressed about leaving Sun not just cause he misses her, but because he doesn’t know what could happen if he’s not there, especially since last time he WASN’T she was taken
!!Him and Groose are now besties!!
Good for him good for him
Little to no reaction during a switch
Weather is both his best friend and mortal enemy
The scariest when angry
Will cry at the drop of a hat and doesn’t know what to do about it
“No one will know the violence it took to become this gentle.”
FINALLY ON BRAND
Is very careful about not stepping on small things
Is pretty fuckin’ sick of Vaati at this point
“It’s funny when short people threaten me, like what are you gonna do?” “Say goodbye to your kneecaps asshole”
Thought of this when I first read the manga when I was like 13
So I often draw/write Four like a fusion from Steven Universe
No I don’t take constructive criticism
“This is who we are, this is who I am.”
Did he exist before the blade split him? Yes. But when he merged for the first time afterwards was he basically a new person? Also yes.
I rest my case
Misses Shadow :[[[[[[
Has a tooth gap!!
!!Has rainbow colored eyes!!
A whopping 4’10”
Puppy eyes work on him really well, it doesn’t matter who is making them, he will cave pretty much upon contact if you give him puppy eyes
G e n d e r
Alright I’m done for now

i would love to hear the minish cap bad ending thoughts
Ok ok ok
I don't know how much you know about Minish Cap's bad ending, so I'll just give a bunch of context. Basically, Zelda's turned into a statue and Vaati is draining her life force to become more powerful. But uh oh, that'll kill her so Links gotta get to the top of the tower before the third chime of a bell. Problem is, he's gotta fight a lot of enemies, including one black and two red darknuts (the hardest fricken enemies in the game oh my gosh dude). The bad ending can happen when you take too long to beat these darknuts. It doesn't have much to it, it just shows you this screen and then game over
Tumblr media
However, the idea of a bad ending is just too good to leave to that! So let's say Link gets there just barely too late and the third bell rings right as he gets to the roof. Vaati's already incredibly difficult boss fight gets even harder when he's got the power of totally-not-the-triforce on his side. Link manages to scrape by, and once he kills Vaati once and for all, the magic wish granting cap that Ezlo made is left behind.
Link wants to use it to save Zelda, but Ezlo explains that it can't perform miracles like bringing people back to life (in the actual ending it does just that, but that's because Zelda is the one using it and she's got the triforce to augment it's power). The castle is left in shambles, and Ezlo restores it with the power of the hat before he has to return to the minish village.
Zelda's statue gets moved up to the roof of the castle. It's where she lost her life, but it's also where she can watch over everyone with her forever unblinking eyes. The townsfolk leave presents at her feet like you would at a grave. The shoemaker leaves her a pair of pegasus boots, fresh bread is left from the bakery, and the children she went to school with leave kinestones by her side. One particular gift stands out above the rest though. A shield, peculiar in is smallness but clearly well used. It's the one from the beginning of the game, the one that failed to protect her from this fate in the first place.
Aaaaanyways, if you guys want some extra angst, listen to Tree on the Hill from the Percy Jackson Musical with this in mind and cry with me lol

Linked Universe Soul Eater AU
i coouuullld work on the long linked universe fic i have been slowly chipping away at
but instead ive decided to type of the lu soul eater au ive had cooking in my brain since i first got covid. it is the nature of all humankind (me) to have soul eater au/headcanons for all things i like. lu is no different. please feel free to talk to me about this im obsessed with it
sky: he is a meister. at first, it was him a sun against the world (meaning, in class at dwma). sun is a shield weapon, and while that made fighting-styles need to get creative, they always managed. however, during an adventure, they find a student named fi, a sword-weapon, and she joins them as sky’s sword. so now he’s like a full, cool knight. during that adventure, however, Something Happens, and the kishin Demise they were fighting traps fi in her sword form. it’s horribly tragic, and sky and sun can feel her getting quieter and quieter as time goes on. they don’t know how to stop it, and its scary. they also team up with groose, whose two weapons (his friends in the game) are gun/cannons. i just feel like groose deserves a gun.
four: he is one guy, a meister. (i was tempted to make him his split brothers pretending to be twins and not four of them, and theyre all weapons tho) but really, its four. he went on his first adventure with a much older weapon (the minish cap enzlo) as a mentor, but at the end enzlo basically said ‘its time for me to retire.’ four then moved to death city to figure himself out, and immediately got wrapped up in a witch’s plan, vaati, who wanted to figure out what makes meister and weapon souls tick. he kidnapped four and broke his soul into pieces. at first, four thought it was only four pieces, but eventually realized vaati ripped a piece of him out and infused it with some black blood, and poof! out comes shadow, a weapon. (kinda like crona, but separate body). the soul fuck-up also, temporarily, split four into four people (because. idk. magic. and soul eater bc. let me have this ok.) and while at the end, four fused back into himself, shadow stayed separate, though he can hop into four’s shadow at will. four then goes back to death academy, and tries to hide shadow as best he can. the deku tree finds out, of course, but lets him keep it a secret. they pretend like all that happened was he got turned into a weapon, and so shadow hides because theyre all scared of people hating him for being the pure essence of black blood (when the chain finds out, its obviously all sympathy and love and a little “holy shit thats awesome”)
shadow mostly turns into a scythe, because thats what vaati wanted in a weapon (he took the term “death scythe” too literally), but he can sometimes turn into a glaive/staff that holds pseudo-elemental attacks, and him and four are working on him holding that form more bc hit makes him more comfortable. four also cant split anymore, but the four pieces of himself are still separate. sometimes they work together smoothly, but sometimes its a cacophony of noise and yelling and migraines.
also due to his... i hesitate to call it adventure. but due to everything four is very good at reading souls. he figures out twilight and midna’s whole deal right away, and pieces together warrior’s fairly quickly. he can tell legend and wild have more forms than they send to show off, and can read hryule’s soul better than hryule can for himself (and learns things about hyrule that he doesnt even know about himself.) but four is a good kid and keeps this all to himself (and yet, still doesnt tell the others about himself. bc hes scared of them being freaked out)
time: he and his wife, malon, are a badass duo, honestly. malon is a death scythe, though her real form is a huge, sickass claymore. they live on campus, and spend most of their time tending to the garden and outdoor parts of campus. they occasionally go on missions, but try not to because they went through enough as youth (taking on a full-fledged kishinn(majora and the fierce deity stuff) and absorbing part of its soul into your body to stop it will make you a little tired of fighting, and that was only their second adventure). time, however, cant stop himself from bonding with and wanting to protect all these new students, and it doesnt help the hero worship a lot of them have towards him.
as for times past, he was dropped off on the academy’s doorstep as a baby, and raised by the deku tree himself. when he was old enough to begin classes, he was a little... out of touch with people his own age because of this, and some folks were pretty mean to him. and then he met malon, and had the biggest case of puppy love/crush possible (but he couldnt figure out his own feelings). they teamed up for a while, got far in their schooling, saved the world. the normal stuff a student does there. that first adventure took it out of him though, so he just kinda... disappeared for a while without telling anyone. malon got pissed, of course, but not fully at him, more at... the world for not being better about helping everyone after these horrible adventures. she goes after him, finds him fighting a kishin by himself, no weapon, mostly a soul-battle, and helps him finish the fight. he’s now missing an eye, has half a kishin in him, and she expects him to be even more broody and awkward, but hes just so happy to see her. (he doesnt confess then, though). they go back together, take a little time to rest and heal, graduate, malon becomes a death scythe, and only then does time confess. malon gives him a “i was waiting for you to be ready :)” and theyre very, very happy. or, as happy as you can be in this world.
legend: he is a weapon, and he can transform into tons of different weapons, like wild, but while wild’s are more... traditional weapons, legends can turn into a sword, a shield, and the most random weapons one can conceive of (meaning, the cooler more flashy ones you see in soul eater, and also his massive amounts of tools in lu). this poor kid has gone on so many missions, mostly entirely by himself, as his own mesiter, basically. he fought with ravio for a while, when they met, because they were soul-compatible, but ravio quickly decided being a meister wasn’t for him. they still room together in death city (also may rename this deku city if i rename the school to deku weapon and meister academy. even if it is funny to have the happy big tree’s city named death city). legend was on his own for a while in school, until he met hyrule
hyrule: he is a meister. he never found a weapon he was compatible with, and instead carried around just a regular sword while scraping through his classes (other students were like, is this allowed??? but death (the deku tree, bc i think its funny to make the deku tree death in this au) was like ‘lmao he’s managing to complete all the missions we send him on, so why not.’) hyrule and legend are eventually on a mission together, and in a jam, hyrule is like ‘please let me try to fight with you’ and legend is like ‘fucking fine. you burn your hands bc i’m not compatible with anyone, thats not my problem.’ and then it works and they kick fucking ass together, tho hyrule struggles to use legend in any form other than sword, and legend hates being in sword-form (bc past trauma he refuses to talk about until it messes with their compatibility. they have a little character arc and hyrule trains using legend in other forms and legend is more comfortable in sword form. and yes the trauma is marin-related. when he partnered with ravio, he never went into sword form)
hyrule is also good at soul resonance and attacks and stuff (like maka and stein). he just has no real training on it bc where he grew up, all the weapons stuff and soul stuff was seen as taboo, so even as he’s actively learning about it all in his classes and knows his kind of abilities are seen as cool and useful, he doesnt want to tell people. (legend eventually finds out and helps him find someone to teach him about it. that someone is time. hyrule quickly becomes super good at it all)
twilight: while not a witch, he is the child of a witch and a human. he was abandoned in a village as a baby, and they raised him communally as their own (though, of course, rusl takes him in the most) he doesnt have any magical powers, but when a witch (zant) came to his village and cursed everyone, he managed to survive by just being cursed into his wolf-form. he had never trained to use a weapon, but quickly meets midna (zant’s half-sister. shes technically a witch, but shes also a weapon. shes a very very weak witch in terms of magic.) on his journey. what follows his basically what youd expect, but he never loses midna companionship in this au. the two of them go to death city and enroll in classes and begin training. only time and the deku tree/death know about his wolf form, which he keeps hidden due to the prejudice again witches in the school. when he first meets wild, who has no memories and is so confused with the world, he just got back from a mission. he immediately latches onto him and helps him figure things out.
also midna turns into these cool as gauntlet/gloves things. with them, twi can hookshot (launch one and the fist goes out and retracts), punch so so good, and charge up for Shadow Blast things for ranged attacks.
warriors: He is actually a weapon, though he hides this from literally everyone. before he came to death academy (which im considering renaming Deku Academy, bc the deku tree is death in this au), he was guilted into being the weapon for a girl named cia. her sister always suspected something was off, but lana never spoke up bc her sister was always there when she tried. eventually, he learned that cia was helping a kishin and was going to try to feed him human souls so they could be powerful (and together) forever, and he got the FUCK outta there. he told himself he would never turn into a weapon again, and he met athena (his zelda. i like that name better for her bc shes literally the goddess of wisdom and warfare), a rapier weapon who could also turn into a bow. (yes i like when the weapons turn into things. its cool also also lets me keep more sword imagery while still giving the boys different weapon options) he teams up with her and they fight, and no one suspects wars is also a weapon bc of how good he is at disguising his soul (he’s only good with his own tho, he can’t read others for shit).
wind: a meister. he grew up in a coastal town, training with some older weapon and meister duos but never really focusing too much on it, until a bird-witch kidnaps his sister. he teams up with his childhood friend, tetra, to get her back. tetra doesnt know shes a weapon at this point (i dont remember if thats how that works in soul eater but shh my au my rules) until she discovers that during the mission. she can turn into a hammer, which functions (obviously) like a hammer, but also as a hookshot (the top flings off, turns sharp, and then retracts), or the sides of the head of the hammer open and suck/blow wind very powerfully (like the gust jar). they get his sister back and wind and terta are like “that was fucking awesome wanna do that forever?” and then they go to death city to go to school.
wild: he is a weapon, like tsubaki, and can turn into basically any weapon he chooses. his zelda, flora, is his meister. they first met when wild first showed that ability to his parents, and wilds family brought him to flora’s father so she could be his meister. this is the past, because i want it to be. so flora’s dad is rich and pays his family for him to be flora’s weapon. wilds family isnt malicious about it, theyre just struggling to get by. they technically give wild a choice in it and ask him if he’s okay, but wild is young and knows this is how he can help his family, so he doesnt really see “no” as an option. he figures he can rise up in station here (tho this is only 100 years before everything else, so the world isnt too “social classes are you stay where you were born unless you become a knight and we still have noblemen and stuff,” but it’s still there. its actually fading, which is why flora’s dad is so intent on her being a good and powerful meister, and why he’s picking a weapon from a lower social class at all (its also bc wilds ability is rare)).
so wild is raised side by side with flora, who hates him like in canon (meaning she doesn’t hate him, just hates how easy it is for him to access his different forms and he he goes along with his lot in life. she just wants to go to school and be her own person, but her dad wants her to be a world-famous meister). hes still not treated super well (he’s not floras equal in the eyes of her father), but he can go visit his family on their days off from training and stuff. eventually, they go on a mission to stop a well-known kishin. flora is extremely good at soul stuff, and basically locks him in place when he mortally wounds wild. wild is taken away by their battle companion impa and her meister, to Death Academy (where they had gone to study occasionally, but still mostly stayed with flora’s father and his private tutors), where he is put into stasis and sleeps for a hundred years. flora and the kishin, known as Calamity, are locked away as the soul-battle rages in in their minds. one hundred years later, wild wakes up with no memories but a voice calling out to his soul. he trains, on his own, because no meister can hold onto him, and goes out on his own to get flora back. he fights by himself with only parts of his body transformed, gets flora, and takes her back to the school, where the two of them rest. now they get to acclimatize to life 100 years in the future. flora struggles because she should be sad- her dad is long gone, wild doesnt fully remember her, everything is different, but at least she can study like she always wanted to.
she still wields wild like a badass, though wild tends to take missions on his own without telling her so they pass the fighting-oriented classed while flora focuses on her studies. she notices only half the time (not for a want of trying tho, wild is just really sneaky)
as of now, i dont have any real... plot with these. just everyones backstories and stuff. but i love the idea of the deku tree making time and malon take all these students on a field trip, which quickly spirals into a whole adventure.

Kinktober 2023 Day 3: Exhibitionism
My friend @elufire and I are the ones pioneering the Vaati x Reader tag, and honestly, I’m OK with that XD I’m a firm believer that he’s a perv and love to portray that in writing, so expect a lot of that this month as well!
💖 Many thanks to @flightlessangelwings for the prompt list! 💖
Tumblr media
Ship: Vaati x F!Reader
Word count: 112
Applicable Tags: Exhibitionism, Voyeurism, Vaati Being A Little Shit, Pet Names, Reader is a Hylian, Teasing, POV Second Person
Tumblr media
You walked through Hyrule Town with Vaati, holding his hand as you made your way around various merchants. “That dress looks lovely on you today, my dear.” He comments, squeezing your hand. “However, it would be a real shame if the weather turned sour.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, a strong gust of wind blew past you, sending the skirt of your dress flying upwards, exposing your panties. “Vaati!” you hissed, hurrying to cover yourself.
“I’m getting tired of milling around these boring civilians.” He slyly gestures to the library in the northernmost part of town. “How about we have some fun and see how quiet you can be?”

Ok seriously, I love Equestrian Wind Mage by Lord Siravant so so so much like omigosh it's so well written and I can't stop re-reading it and and and–
Many times I've tried drawing this interspecies couple and many times I have failed. So have a sketch at least
Goddamn I just wish my skills would be better so I could draw more fanart of the fic ahhhhhhh
The only thing I think the fic misses is a proper family time with these three
(raw emotions)
Like I remember when Season 3 of the fic aired and that chapter omg I cried poor Vaati my baby
EWM just inspires me to this very day

Minish Cap Manga Rant. I have... feelings
k first I want to set the stage. This is Minish Cap we are talking about. Minish Cap, the beautiful game with beautiful, charming characters, and a really cute and interesting premise. You've got Link, Link's grandpa (he's got an actual grandpa in this game! so cute!) Zelda, the Minish, the Sky Tribe, not to mention Ezlo (who I think they did a pretty ok job with actually) and Vaati! This is the origin story of Vaati! Vaati was actually a Minish! How cool is that???
rest of rant below the cut:
This is also Akira Himekawa we're talking about. When I first read the Himekawa mangas, I read them all back to back, having gotten a giant pack of them for my birthday. Guess which one I read first. Ducking Four Swords. Needless to say I was floored. Shocked. Hooked. Bamboozled. I loved that book. Um, it set my expectations high. Guess which one I read next. (it was actually Link to the Past, but for the purpose of dramatic irony,) IT WAS MINISH CAP. Needless to say, I felt robbed. Bamboozled(derogatory) Shocked. And frankly bored. I remember the first thing I thought after I finished the manga was "wow. They managed to make Minish Cap boring. Impressive" Anyway, let's go through the manga so I can tell you exactly why I am oh so very pissed.
First off, it opens with EXPOSITION. *imagine me rolling my eyes very hard right here* It is at the very beginning, and it is about the Picori, and its not very long, so I will excuse it. It's got some pretty cute art behind it, and I managed to get through it.
But the thing is, right after the exposition bit, we get to Link and his grandpappy and they immediately bring up the Picori. They could have just covered the whole exposition thing here! In dialogue! The exposition was completely unnecessary!
Anyway, after that, we learn the tiniest bit about Link. We learn he wants to 'test his skills', to prove himself. (at the martial arts tournament he was too inexperienced to participate in lmao) Almost immediately after, we meet Zelda. We learn that she and Link have been friends for a while (and that Zelda emotionally manipulates Link into doing whatever she wants 😳) They go off to see the Picori festival together. Now its been nine pages and I feel like I know nothing about Link. (or Zelda. But she's not important cause she gets zapped in like, two pages, so pssh) What is his goal in life? He says he wants to prove himself, but to who? His grandfather already seems proud of him. What are his weaknesses? (other than Zelda's tears lmao) this is basic stuff! To compare this to Four Swords once again, In literally five pages, I see Four Sword Link's motivation and hubris all on full display. I can feel the motivation his character has already! He's full of energy and plot potential, ready to kick off his journey of self discovery and maturation. Where the hell is Minish Cap Link going? Please tell me.
Anyway, Vaati blasts the thing open and poofs away after turning Zelds to stone. Now this would be great motivation for Link, if we got to see him and Zelda bond a bit more. At the moment, his words just sound like what any good citizen of Hyrule would say if their princess was turned to stone. Ok we're moving on from Link's underdeveloped character cause I'm already bored.
NOW FOR THE BEST PART OF THE ENIRE MANGA. We get Link alone, walking in the woods, being his charming self. I always chuckle aloud, when Link screams about not being able to see the Picori with 'these jaded eyes' fearing he's already lost his child-like innocence, I always do, no matter where I am. AND in this same section, we are introduced to the wonderful Ezlo. Ahhh they make such a great pair in this manga honestly. I love Ezlo being this prideful weird uncle type who shows Link the ropes. And he is just as prideful and sarcastic as his cap partner. Honestly they have great vibes together. And I don't really have any complaints about his section. It's some cute fluff that I kind of enjoy.
Here and there we just splashes of the interpersonal drama that I crave. We sometimes get hints that Ezlo is hiding something, we occasionally get hints of what Ezlo thinks of Link. But for the most part, there's very little conflict. And thats why this section starts to get tiring. But for now, this is the most enjoyable part of the manga. They collect the water element quickly with the help of very charming picori. And they help an old smith picori regain his spark and passion for smithing. And it's really sweet, but it lacks anything to do with Link. Like, that's cute and all, but literally anyone could have helped the smith picori out. What did it have to do with Link? What did that add to Link's story?
And now. We are halfway through the manga. And here it begins. AAAHHHHH I HATE THIS PART UGHASHDFSGH *i am clawing, biting and foaming at the mouth* They head toward the library, picori size, and run into a cat which they run away from and then get caught by a little girl (who they literally stab with a sword to let them go (why am I saying them, this is literally all Link's doing)) and then they meet baby chicks and then LINK LOOKS UP A GIRLS SKIRT??? after which they meet a dog and then they finally get to the library and wow its so big and look at this library picori can this one picori lives in a book and he's writing a book and he takes forever to tell them what they need to do and- I DONT CARE OH MY GODDDD.
This goes on for pages and it's been ages since we've gotten even a smidgeon of character development. I barely even see Link and Ezlo's awesome personalties i was talking about! Things are just happening to them! I get that it's supposed to be exploring what life might be like if you were only two inches tall, and I might find this entertaining if was invested in the characters, but I'm simply not. Like, (and yes, comparing it to the four swords manga again) what if the colors were shrunk down to minish size and did all these things? I WOULD EAT THAT UP IN A HEARTBEAT. And I know the four swords manga had two whole novels to flesh out their characters, but it also stands to reason that they had four main characters, and minish cap has half that number, 2, Link and Ezlo) The story did not do a good job of making me care about these characters at the beginning and is now suffering from it. I now want to throw the manga at the wall.
I revive from my stupor when the boring book picori mentions that he recognizes Ezlo's name and voice. Ezlo acts very upset at this and pulls Link away, furthering the narrative that he's hiding something from Link. And when they make it to the temple of droplets, he accidentally, vaguely compares Link to Vaati. And Link was like, who are you talking about? See, now that's interesting! Literally everything that came before and is to come is not.
Now the mayfly fairy in the temple of droplets is cool and fine and all. I really enjoyed this segment. Now, here comes Vaati to screw things up. And- oh wow, I nearly forgot about Vaati. Huh, oh my gosh I know literally nothing about this character. huh. We are more than halfway through this story and I feel like I know nothing about the antagonist. That. Is. Not. Good.
Anyway, here it is revealed that Ezlo used to be Vaati's master! Yes! Good! Angst! and- and they're talking about the light force and exposition crap again. It's over. hhhhhhhhhh ANYWAY he curses the mayfly fairy and its sad.
Now Ezlo tells Link all about how Vaati stole a magic cap of his and betrayed him, cursing him to take the form of a cap himself. Cool! Exposition that matters cause these are characters we kind of care about!
Now they need the wind element which is in the sky oh noooooo- They run into this guy who give them a bunch of kin stones and tells them to go to King Gustaf's grave. There they meet Gustaf's ghost and he tells them how to get to the wind place. They get there and no one is there and they meet these flying monster things that they ride and- Getting bored yet? That's cause it is boring. Anyway, we finally meet the wind tribe people and
IT'S MORE DUCKING EXPOSITION ABOUT CHARACTERS WE DON'T CARE ABOUT.
At this point in the manga where I always reach my breaking point. It's always here. We are slogging through a history lesson about King Gustaf when the drama between Ezlo and Vaati hasn't been fully explored yet and I know nothing about the personality or motivations of the main antagonist. WHY. I FEEL LIKE I AM PLAYING A VIDEO GAME READING THIS MAGNA. IF I WANTED TO PLAY MINISH CAP, I WOULD'VE BOUGHT THE GAME. Mind you Link has not progressed in his personal journey to... wait what was that again?
Ok so now he has all the elements and the fixed picori sword which is now the Four Sword (!!!) They return to Hyrule Castle to find the elemental sanctuary and the King doesn't know where it is?? Sus. Yeah he turns out to be Vaati. Hmmm shapeshifting into he form of Hyrule royalty to make advantage of someone hmmm I wonder where I've seen that before... (im kidding, of course. Vaati disguising himself as the king is in the original game) ANYWAY MORE EXPOSITION YAYAYAYAAY
Zelda has the light force. Vaati freezes the whole castle and then tries to draw the Light force out of Zelda while Link kinda struggles to get over to where he is. He succeeds and now Vaati has the light force. He transformed into this awesome 'Vaati Reborn' thing and looks super sick. But he keeps leveling up and eventually is overcome with power to the point where he turns into a monster. And this is really cool! He lusted for power, but not for the consequences that came with it! (would've been nice if this was set up beforehand, but whatever) Anyway he beats Vaati and frees Zelda. yay
The cursed is lifted on both Ezlo and Vaati and they return to their minish forms.
And here, finally, we get Vaati's motivation. WHY? WHAT?? WE GET THE VILLAIN'S MOTIVATION AFTER HE HAS BEEN BEATEN?? WHY?? Anyway, it's really cute, he thought he could never be good enough for Ezlo, and so wanted limitless power so he could prove himself. They state that true power comes from strength of character, which is why Link was able to beat Vaati (where was that strength of character when Link tried to look up a girl's skirt earlier??) Okay?? Nice sentiment but I wish this was set up earlier??? Link encourages Vaati to keep training harder and not to look for shortcuts. ...ok. So basically Link won cause he worked rlly hard to get all the McGuffins. Nice.
And after a heartfelt goodbye from Ezlo and a tearful one from Link, the story ends. It's really sweet there at the end, seeing the two characters who actually had personalties show off their wonderful chemistry one last time before they depart. Makes me smile.
AND FINALLY IT'S OVER. I'm sorry that was so long, but hopefully now you see my point about underdeveloped characters, wasted time and wasted potential. Thank you for coming to my Youtube Analysis video.

Ok ok ok I’m feeling confident again so i’m gonna post some of the theories I have on miscellaneous things in the manga as well as stuff adapted to my own AU hopefully this is coherent enough to read:
MY THEORY ON SHADOW LINK’S ORIGINS
(Includes timeline shenanigans because of course lolol)
Ganon has made plenty of sentient creatures/people to work for him (such as Ghirahim in Skyward Sword) and having it work relatively well for his evildoing and whatnot. When he reincarnated in Four Swords, he allied with Vaati and tried the strategy again using the dark mirror’s magic. Maybe he found a flaw in his previous design (Ghirahim) and decided to try and improve it, by drawing inspiration from the current Hero himself (Link, before the split). He created Shadow, a dark-traited, magical being with sentience and free will. Unfortunately for Ganon, the downside of sentient beings working for you is they they have a mind of their own. Shadow turned against Ganon and Vaati after he fell in love with Vio (and also learned what normal relationships are supposed to be like), causing him to break the dark mirror (temporarily, because in my AU the mirror was later fixed) and take Vaati down with him.
So, when Ganon resurrected again in future Eras/games, he learned that ‘sentience = bad’. (The following info only makes sense with my personal AU timeline placement, with FSA right before Ocarina of time)
He made another being to do his bidding once again, but he learned from his mistake of giving his henchmen free will and made Dark Link instead. Dark Link was made in response to the past “”failures”” of Shadow, which is why Dark Link does not have free will or even the ability to speak! Unlike Shadow, Dark Link is not a person, it is basically just a clump of dark magic twisted into a shape that resembles one. It does not think, it is not alive. Shadow and Dark Link definitely look similar and have similar origins, but they are DIFFERENT. BECAUSE I SAID SO.
Also, Darks will resemble their counterpart Hero 1:1 exactly, whereas Shadow is a different person to the Four Heroes in essentially every way possible including his appearance. He looks different, because he is.
TL:DR, Ganon made Shadow, quickly realised that making sentient henchmen is kind of not useful for evildoing, so later on he made Dark Link instead in future eras/games.

Ok I just finished the manga myself and Link saying his head is cold in an attempt to get Ezlo to stay, only to be given a new hat in return… man that just hurts. Though I love Link’s little jab at Ezlo when he tells Vaati he can relate
Yessss the end of the manga is the best part. Honestly makes me teary-eyed for no reason

Oh?
I've been basically thrown into the deep end with this as I barely know anything tbh, but I'm ok with you babbling about it!
-🔨
You have given us too much power /hj
oooh ok so if you want the basic stuff for the main link and his general adventures; you've got this
there's also this, which is more or less a fact sheet of the colours
and blue! for specifics!
Tumblr media
this super-duper zoomed in drawing is the very first of him. personality wise, he's a mashup of warriors, four, and legend—generally speaking, of course. during the time of his 2nd adventure, he's effectively wearing not lu hero of legend clothes but in blue
from now on I'm referencing the 2nd adventure
so... they split. maybe not the worst thing that's happened in their lives but damn if it isn't up there. Blue is the first to react to the situation and runs off before the others can say anything—for all he knows, he's the original link and the others are illusions. He thought he was the one to run off with the ocarina but that was not the case and eventually he had to return to the others, through time travel or simply finding them (it ended up being the former, since the other 3 had traveled to the swamp by this point). There's a huge argument, involving Blue running off for the second time—which lead him to a ranch—red shutting herself down and being generally emotionless for a good while, green questioning their abilities as a leader, and vio haphazardly taking the position as co-leader because they're still on a time limit and they don't exactly have time to argue.
Amends are made after they've been separated for around a day and a half and the quintet travel a similar path as you'd take in MM. Red and green find themselves happier in town and help the citizens there, and the cooler tones dungeon crawl up until the end of Snowhead. They try totem time to pass the great bay fence, but theyr just. So short. Blue comments that there's a ranch nearby and maybe they could find a horse, so they're off once more.
yada yada horse great bay (vio loved it, blue despised it)
all four of them travel to the land of the dead, ikana. this is where they get three moon pearls—the moon gates are found where the fountain is at the bottom of the well and at the base and peak of the tower in town.
dw!ikana is a healthy, thriving nation with many people. The citizens are friendly and it's basically Hyrule outside of Hyrule, with a slightly more... ecstatic population. They have to travel back and forth to get two songs—The elegy of emptiness and the rhapsody of life. The elegy does as MMs does, and the rhapsody brings hope and peace to sorrowed souls, not in the same way as the song of healing works, but close.
They open the moon gate at the base of the tower, and something similar to this comes in:
Tumblr media
accounting for.. basically knowing the lore better; the moon gates are activated, not the moon pearls used to change worlds alone, and vaatis "sending them away" is basically him snatching and throwing all of them into the gate, then sealing the front enough that they can't reenter from the top.
Puzzles vs enemy's is another dw parallel thing :]
and that's about it for Blues whole story! Vaati isn't actually sealed in the fs (trying to find an excuse to bring the colours back whenever we want? nooooo shhhh/j) so the colours can come back anytime. whew
