“Woah! Careful there!”

The way the boxes were stacked, the blonde couldn’t help but feel that they were about to tip over at any moment. Or, even worse, that the one carrying this stack would inevitably end up crashing into someone and that multiple people would end up getting hurt.

“Here, I’ve got it!”

As she said that, Falabella reached out, taking some of the boxes with relative ease. Of course, she made sure to give plenty of warning before actually taking the boxes in question, so the other wasn’t taken off-guard, and had time to react. But after a moment, she settled again, tilting her head a little bit.

“Is that better? You alright?”

"Are you... sure, that this'll work? That I can find her like this?" Uncertainty filled the kitsune's bones. To possibly throw it all away like this, to just... gamble it all, just to find one stupid girl she didn't even fucking LIKE anymore...

A masked man simply shrugged, pointing at the space where she had just came from--the astral, they called it? Read about it in books but... to think that she was actually there, if only for a second. "I don't fuckin' know, nobody's ever used magic like this before. Seriously, you think people just think about COMBINING SPELLS? Like it won't kill you or something." He stared at the space, the opening into that vast and terrifying space, "The most I can do for you is drop concentration before ten minutes. If it's her, then you get to talk to her, make some cool conversation before I drag you back. If it's not her, then hey! At least you're not dying in some weird fucked up place. That'd be awful."

The kitsune stared the man down, "Didn't you try to kill me in your fucked up tower?"

Eccentric as ever, the masked man waved it off. She swore she could see him smiling behind it, "Ah, what's in the past is in the past! We're buddies now, riiiight? Friends? Amigos!!!"

Her voice grew deeper, quieter, pained with regret, "As long as you're not trying more fucked up shit, I guess."

"GREAT!" He clapped his hands, then pushed the kitsune into the portal, muttering a quick spell before she fell in. "SEE YOU NEXT FALL!!!"

She landed, thankfully on her feet, next to... well, whatever it was, it was a fucking wreck. Blue and green wood scattered everywhere, along with the normal bramble wood and whatever else. Completely obliterated, no real chance of recovery unless you were really good at carpentry... of which, the kitsune was not. She could probably make something look like this, let alone build it.

And... next to the wreckage, stood a... a cat??? But... huh???

Aphe--eugh, just the name alone brought remorse into her heart--told her that... that cats were extinct. At least, in Amora, they were. Possibly even all of Low. So, what the hell? What was this... honestly kind of tiny, cat doing here? Or did Aphe just fuckin' lie?

Gods, she wouldn't put it past her. Seemed like everyone liked to lie and use the kitsune for their own gains. It's what Aphe did, it's what Lord Ry's doing, it's what--

"You just gonna stand there and watch, girlie?"

"GAH!" The kitsune couldn't help but exclaim, jumping back and spawning her severance blade--a blade made entirely, purely of shadow. But... she cringed, dropping it's form.

Stop using it, Alyssa, you'll end up like Miseri before long.

Shook her head. Coughed awkwardly. "Sorry. I didn't want to interrupt!" Luckily, her deception skills weren't half bad. She could practically lie out of any situation.

Yet, the cat didn't respond. She just... sat down. Then pat the spot next to her. Took the kitsune by surprise but, after a moment of consideration, she took the offer. Walked over, sat down, her three tails relaxing against the grassy floor.

The cat spoke up first, "Not 'ta get deep on a stranger, but I wanna ask somethin'."

"Shoot," she didn't miss a beat.

A sigh escaped the cat. She continued, "Ya ever miss it?"

...? "Miss, what, exactly?"

"The fun an' innocent times. The times where... nothin' really mattered, y'know? When ya could do anythin' ya wanted to an' nobody would bat an eye. When ya weren't saddled with responsibilities an' junk. When ya could just... Iunno. Have fun, I guess."

Fun?

Her expression hardened. Full of regret.

"I... I don't think I've ever had fun, not like you're describing.

"It's... not like I could. Nobody ever let me."

She noticed the cat's ear twitch, slightly. Same habit she had--small world. The feline turned her head only an inch towards her, "What--were ya just sheltered or somethin'?"

Sheltered.

She scoffed, "Guess you could say that. I... didn't really have friends growing up. Only had my Ma. And I guess I had fun with her, while I could, but everything else..." A pause, a sniffle, before she shut her eyes.

She continued, "Everyone in my village ignored the shit out of me. Didn't pay me any mind, felt like I was a fucking ghost or something. Didn't get a single friend to have any sort of ''fun'' with. All my life it was like that, staying in my room all locked up because nobody wanted to be around me.

"I can only have fun when I'm fighting. And it turns out I need to fight in order to save the fucking world or whatever, so that drags out any kind of fun I could get from it.

"Not to mention that I get fucking blood hungry whenever I get knocked down. Stand straight back up, and suddenly I need to kill whatever the hell's in front of me. Real fucking fun that is. Super fun!!!" She slammed a fist on the ground, tears flowing out of her eyes, "It's so much fun!!! What if me and Ehnd got into a stupid spat? And I started trying to fucking kill him? Am I just gonna end up like my fucking Ma? Am I gonna get just as bad as her and--"

She froze.

The cat's arms wrapped around the kitsune's.

"Gonna be real, girl--I got no idea what the foxtrot you're talkin' about.

"But it sounds like you're hurtin' real bad, 'specially if you're rantin' to a stranger like me.

"An' I can't do much about... whatever the hell you're goin' through, I really can't.

"But I can give ya a shoulder 'ta cry on, at least."

...

Tears welled in her eyes.

The first real hug she's gotten in a while.

One that wasn't from her fucked up mother.

One that didn't feel like obligation from a friend.

One that felt... so damn nice.

The waterworks came, hard. She hugged this strange green cat as tightly as she could. She sobbed, wailed, everything she could to let the pain out. To let her entire life's worth of pain out.

She felt so exhausted, doing all of this. Everything she's been through, every single primal she's fought, all the dangers she's tried to prevent, all of the pain she's trying to make up for.

She didn't want to do it anymore. She just wanted to be... normal.

But

What choice did she have?

Nobody else knew what she knew.

Nobody else could do what she can do.

If it had to be anybody, if it had to be.

Then she was the only one. The only one who could even try to save everything.

But Gods... she really didn't want to anymore.

"Alyssa," she offered her hand, a weak smile on her face, her muzzle stained with tears.

The cat smirked, taking her hand and firmly shaking it, "Carol."

A voice spoke in her head. ''ARE YOU DONE YET? IT'S BEEN LIKE SEVEN MINUTES, THE SPELL'S ABOUT TO WEAR OFF, AND I DON'T WANT THAT--'', cut off.

It spoke again. ''YOU DIDN'T HEAR THAT LAST BIT DID YOU? GREAT. WHY ISN'T THERE A BETTER WAY OF COMMUNICATING TO YOU OTHER--'', cut off, again.

Angrier this time, it spoke once more, ''JUST TELL ME IF YOU'RE LEAVING YET. GOD DAMN IT.''

For as smart as he is, the Grey Lord sure is a fucking idiot. Gods damn him.

"I should get going. Maybe we can talk later?" As if it were even possibly to see her again.

Yet, the cat seemed confident in this answer, grin wide as ever. " 'Course, 'Lyssie! Just lemme know--I'm always down 'ta talk!!!"

Her heart warmed at the prospect. She nodded, smiling. "Awesome! Then I'll... see you around?"

"See ya aroun'!!!"

Ready to leave, Gray Lord.

And with that, she disappeared in an instant.

The kitsune returned back to where she first stood, where the mask was. A smile wide on her face.

The man tilted his head, to show confusion, "Hey, how'd you get that extra tail?"

She jumped! Then, looked back at her backside.

Four. Four tails...!!!

Was it really possible...? Did she and the cat...?

She looked up at the man, with a smile as wide as the feline had, "I... I just made another friend!!!"
