Anyone else think short form social media based on algorithms designed to promote topics that create more engagement instead of more joy, the idea of fast fashion but conveyed through social media, and the fact you can monetize suffering and outrage better than ever has largely resulted in the death spiral of media literacy and the mass emergence of bad faith readings?

#I may be venting a lil but god it blows my mind #fyp is a blessing and a curse because i don't think ppl were ever meant to be subjected to this many ppl at once #god i took a bird site hiatus for weeks and now BARELY check it and it already feels like a hit #oughhhhh #even fandom spaces have hugely incorporated marketing and networking into them bc of cmms and sponsorship and building portfolio #which would be fine tbh if it weren't for the way socmed is designed #now it's like you can't support too many ppl or else you're shadow banned or you have to make yourself palatable and marketable #and websites with threads in which people will only read the first post before qrting because ratios are seen as five minutes of fame #features that permit beating an algorithm are locked behind a paywall that promises you money if you go viral #and what goes viral is usually incendiary content meant for those ratios or trends. whether for or against OP #even in hobbyist spaces the climate has changed so much due to the monetization and marketing and just. ugh #not to mention side accounts dedicated to gossip in this new priv account culture like...idk #if you have to make another account so you can make fun of a friend on main with selected priv friends it just doesn't sit well with me #and not every priv account does this but enough do and it makes me tired #unsolicited hate comments are still as bad as they used to be on ff dot net except now people openly are proud of it more #why do most socmed feel like passive aggressive sticky notes on high school lockers #there is so much more I could say about everything that has left me weary about the internet but I don't know the time or place #and I don't want anyone to think this is about them because it's a general statement. though if you are doing the more inflammatory things. #maybe rethink that. it's not good for anyone else and it's not good for you either #I keep coming back online to check on ppl and see art and I *know* it's draining for my health every time #but I feel a lot better now that i use socmed less overall. and that I try to focus on what makes me happy #it just sucks seeing so many people i care about endure absolutely wild struggles bc people online do not care. #I like rambling in my tags because this is the only place I ramble except my personal journal and to my wife

#textpost #I took AP art in high school and part of the portfolio project we needed to submit was to do like 8 pieces on a theme #that everyone had to do to test technical ability and understanding of the subjects #Then the other part was like 8 pieces that were entirely original in a medium of the artist's choice but they had to all tie together #So I drew a bunch of horrible monsters/demons looking miserable as all hell and for my tie-in essay on what the theme for them was #I wrote about how no matter how violent or gory or terrifying a monster is they can still feel loneliness and pain #I was really going through it back then lol #Anyway I got a 5 out of 4 on my portfolio. Still very proud of that. IIRC only one other guy in the class also got a 5 #4 of 4 was superb but 5 of 4 was like SSS rank flawless #It's a shame I don't have the essay anymore... I lost all my copies moving up and down the coast after high school.... #But I do still have my portfolio itself and all the art pieces

looking back at some of the art i did in high school. i am still so proud of what i made back then some of it was genuinely really good. i'm also a leetle bit pissed thinking abt the fact that i have yet to actually successfully monetize a single one of my creative endeavors

A Little Money Would Also Be Nice Sometimes. #esp cause i'm not good at anything else. music and art. two jobs that are famously shit paying #i remember our senior art show in high school too we had a whole reception and guests could buy prints or originals of student works #and not a single person bid on any of mine. not one! #and like on one hand i realize i was the only kid that year with a 3d portfolio rather than a 2d one and sculptures are harder to sell #but i also definitely had a few pieces that would be attractive to buy. but no one cared #no one ever cares. i'm only good for light amusement. i don't create anything of real worth. #i wanna talk about me #that tapestry is still the coolest fucking thing i've ever made though and i'll die mad about the fact that nobody wanted it #and it didn't win any awards. fucked up. i spent two months knitting that. fuckers

It’s college application season and I have no idea what to do or what’s going on where I want to go or anything ready and 👍 my life feels like it’s already over because of how unprepared I am for this

#i am. severely freaking out and I just want to cry #i don’t know what to do but I can’t take a gap year because then I’ll lose all the resources I’d have through the high school #and I don’t want to go to academic college and most art schools need a fucking portfolio and those take ages to make and I don’t have shit #and I’m gonna fucking end up like my mom. depressed and living a life she hates with a job she hates and having had to constantly scrounge - #-for minimum wage jobs her entire life for a shitty house that she couldn’t even afford to live in on her own #man I think I had the right idea when I was 14 and planning to kill myself after graduation it’d be so much easier #I’m fucking terrified and I don’t know what I’m fucking doing and nobody can actually help me #vent
