My theme was “how different kinds of loss affect people on a daily basis”

ap classes ranked by how badly they made me want to drop out

ap art history -- i was sobbing crying nightly trying to memorise 'tamati waka nene' to the tune of africa by shakira

ap us history -- it moved incredibly slowly at times and incredibly quickly over the interesting bits. tell me why we spent no time at the revolutionary war and spent three weeks talking about cold war economics

ap world history -- don't ask me about the ottomans if you want to see me happy and content

ap 2d art an design -- spent a month straight trying to scrape my portfolio together on college board. it kept deleting my progress. and each image took like 3 hours to format and load. so happy it was over. liked the drawing bit though

ap language -- very chill!! liked writing essays and reading the news. never got complexity but i resigned myself to it :(

ap European history -- honestly really fun. machiavelli is my bro. napoleon is my babygirl. leonardo da Vinci is gay

Hello!! Official introduction here!!

My name is Nort, I use he/they/she pronouns, I'm gonna begin my freshman year of college this fall. I've just ended two years in a row of AP portfolios (drawing then 2D design) and I post all of my art on my Instagram, @nortimer_

I'm here mostly just to avoid Instagram reels and also just immerse myself in the Tumblr experience ig?? Which sounds odd, but I grew up in so many fandoms that had massive communities on Tumblr and wanted so badly to be a part of it. So now I'm finally here. Yippee yahoo. I like reblogging art that I love but also just random garbage sometimes too :D

Some of my past fandoms are Pokemon, Warriors, Portal, FNAF, Undertale, Persy Jackson, and the DSMP (not anymore, but I was along for the ride LMAO)

Some of my current favorite things are Mob Psycho 100, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, FMA:B, my friend's Minecraft RP server, Akira 1988, Promare, Delicious in Dungeon, Warriors, and Pokemon Black and White (and the sequels)

this was an old AP portfolio piece at school that was meant to visually capture how a person experiencing de-realization or disassociation would "see" the world. the muted colors and empty or lifeless feeling of the drawing mimic's how one with those expiriences sees the world. muted, bland, flat, static or 2d.

Hi! I saw your AP art portfolio post and it looked really cool! Your arts awesome honestly.

I’m taking AP 2d art this year too but I don’t have the option to take the class, so I wanted to know how you decided on your sustained investigation? I was having a lot of trouble with it 😭 I really dunno how specific to make it or how broad, and whether picking something related to mental health is too repeated. I’ve also heard that picking stuff related too much to symbolism or too specific gets low scores? I really don’t know much honestly but I’ve tried researching (sorry for the long ask <3)

hello!! thank you, i worked very hard on it!

honestly i can’t really remember how i chose my sustained investigation exactly, but i do know that i wanted to go down a route that is more character-based. i chose monsters/fantasy in the modern world because it monsters are a topic i am very familiar with and i knew i would be able to have a lot of ideas for it. my personal takeaway from this aspect is to make sure you either know a lot about your SI topic, or it’s something you’re interested in learning and are willing to do a lot of research for it.

i would say don’t be too specific. you don’t want to limit yourself. you want to have enough wriggle room with your topic to explore the question in different ways! and you are right, heavy symbolism can be hard to pull off. that’s why i chose a simple and lighthearted topic. but you could go another route! one of my friends used her ap art portfolio to produce stuff for her own story and needed to come up with a topic, so her SI ended up having a pretty abstract question that was something like “how do characters cope with grief and find solace in each other.” she ended up getting a 4, which is a pretty good score!

overall, make sure your question can generate a lot of creative solutions. don’t worry about making it super serious. ap art isn’t about how “deep” or “symbolic” you can be, they want you to find ways to answer your sustained investigation question. my teacher told me one of his students did “stuff i hate” as their topic and got a great score! once you know not to limit yourself with silliness, you can honestly find ideas for topics anywhere. watch your favorite show. read a book. walk outside. look on pinterest boards. choose something you love and know you can make a strong question for.

i wish you the best of luck! this is a pretty brutal ap with a lot of time management. my final recommendation would be to at least make 12 full pieces out of the 15 images you’re required to upload. then use the last 3 to make progress slides. good luck! and if you have any more questions, my dms are always free :D
