“Oh, baby, look at this!” Rooster called out to you over several racks of clothing, holding up quite possibly the ugliest sundress you had ever seen in your life. It looked like a cross between a tablecloth and a mumu your grandmother would wear. “Just what you were looking for!” he grinned, waving it in the air proudly.
You covered your mouth as you laughed, not wanting to offend anyone in the store who may be seriously considering that horrifying ensemble.
For the past couple hours, you and Rooster had been perusing clothing rack after clothing rack at the mall, doing some last minute shopping in preparation for your honeymoon. Your wedding was just over two weeks away, and you were leaving for Hawaii the day after. You were hoping to pick up some new bathing suits and dresses that you could pack for the special occasion.
Over time, however, the shopping excursion had devolved into a silly little game between you and your fiance. Instead of seeking out serious items, the two of you had made it your mission to pick out the ugliest, most ridiculous articles of clothing you could find for each other. The dress Rooster was currently holding up had to be the worst by far.
“I don’t know, babe,” you replied, biting back another burst of laughter. “I don’t want to go making everyone else on the island jealous. Might attract too much attention, you know?” you teased.
Rooster grinned at that, putting the dress back on the rack and walking over to where you stood, wrapping an arm around your waist and pressing a kiss to the edge of your jawline, just under your ear. “You could be wearing a potato sack and you’d still attract attention, honey,” he murmured with a wink.
You flushed pleasantly at that, grinning. As you flipped through the shirts on the rack in front of you, you couldn’t help but laugh when you happened upon a truly heinous Hawaiian shirt, decorated with flowers and the creepiest looking fish you had ever seen.
“Need another or do you think you’re covered?” you joked, holding it up for Rooster to inspect.
“It hurts me that you would even think of putting this thing in the same league as my collection,” Rooster replied, feigning woundedness as he put a hand over his heart.
“Oh, I’m very sorry,” you grinned, standing on tiptoes to press a kiss to his cheek.
“I’ll forgive you this once,” Rooster chuckled, slipping an arm around your shoulders as the two of you began wandering towards the swimsuit section of the department store. Though you were having a winter wedding, thankfully swimsuits were a year-round commodity in California.
“That one just has your name written all over it, baby,” Rooster whispered against your ear, pointing to a mannequin wearing a lime green mesh bikini with massive, tacky silver rings hanging off the waistband.
“Oh, yeah, definitely,” you nodded with a straight face, as if seriously considering it. “It would definitely be a good insurance policy. The sharks and stingrays will stay clear of us so long as I’m in that eyesore,” you added with a grin and a playful nudge to his side.
“Just looking out for you, baby girl,” Rooster laughed, stepping over to a rack that held a wide array of colorful bathing suits.
“Don’t worry, babe, I’ll find something perfect for you,” you told him, walking over to the men’s section. You sifted through several different fairly standard designs until your eyes alighted on the single greatest thing you had ever seen in your life. “Babe, I’ve got one!” you called out, snatching it up and hurrying over to where your fiance was standing. “Ta da!” you announced, holding it up.
Rooster nearly fell over from laughing, a few of the sales clerks shooting you both strange looks as the two of you descended into a fit of hysterical laughter.
“What? You don’t like it?” you managed to get out between giggles, smiling at the look of lighthearted humor on his face.
“I mean, how could I not?” Rooster asked, taking the swimsuit, if it could even be called that, from your hands and holding it up to his waist. That only made the two of you laugh harder.
It was the tiniest speedo you had ever seen. Not only that, but it was also stamped in a leopard print design, making it truly one of the most horrifying bathing suits either of you had ever beheld.
“I don’t know, babe, I think it would look good on you,” you said, quirking a playful brow. “Sure you don’t want to try it on?”
“Hmm,” Rooster considered for a moment, then turned a mischievous smile on you. “How about we agree that I’ll try this on if you try this on,” he said, snatching up the tiniest bikini you had ever seen in your life. You were pretty sure you had seen dental floss thicker than the strings holding that thing together.
“Oh, yeah?” you asked, raising your eyebrows at him.
He leaned in closer, pressing a soft kiss to your ear before whispering, “I’ve heard they’ve got pretty big dressing rooms.” He laughed as your cheeks turned red and added, “I love that blush of yours, baby.”
“Hmm, I’d say you’ve got yourself a deal,” you smiled, snatching the tiny bikini out of his hands and burying it underneath the other clothing you intended to try on. You snatched the speedo up as well and added it to the pile.
“Remind me to come shopping with you more often,” Rooster grinned, the both of you laughing like fools as you made your way to the dressing room.

This Is How Tourists Are Destroying Coral reefs In Hawai`i

The millions of tourists who flock to the shores of Hawaii every year are wreaking havoc on its natural environment -- especially the coral reefs, which are at risk all over the world, a new study said.
The most popular coral reefs on the Hawaiian islands are likely being degraded by the very visitors they attract, according to a study published Monday in Nature Sustainability.
Researchers from Princeton University combed through more than 250,000 geotagged Instagram posts from 2018 to 2021 by tourists visiting Hawaiian reefs and compared them with flyover maps of live coral cover. They then used artificial intelligence to analyze reef map images at about a 2-meter resolution, or about 6.5 feet, and 16-meter, or 52.5-feet, depth, according to the study.
Bing Lin, a PhD candidate in science, technology and environmental policy at Princeton University's School of Public and International Affairs and the lead author of the study, got the idea to use social media for the research after doing fieldwork in Hawaii in 2021 and realizing that one of the first things people do when they visit a site is to take a photo and post it to Instagram, he told ABC News.
"They take pictures of the beaches, and they post on social media," he said. "Instagram is by far the main platform through which social media presence is documented, and so I came up with the idea of using Instagram to get a sense of a large-scale representation of where people are distributed in Hawaii."
The scientists found that the accessible sites with more live coral cover were visited more often, but that at the popular sites, coral covers were more degraded compared to those at less popular sites, the paper states.
"We were able to find that coral reefs not only played a really significant role in attracting tourism, but also that the tourism subsequently seemed to suppress live coral coverage at the sites in which tourism was most concentrated," Lin said.
While tourism is mostly concentrated on the shoreline, with lots of activity on the beach, many tourists end up on excursions in which they venture further into the ocean for snorkeling or scuba diving, Lin said.
Using keywords included in captions and hashtags, such as "#scubadiving," Lin was also able to determine a certain degree of interaction with the reefs. Corals tended to thrive farther out into the water, where there are less people, Lin said.
The degradation can happen in the form of diver contact, when divers intentionally or accidentally come in contact with the reefs, as well as elevated pollution in areas that tourists frequent, Lin said.
Places in Oahu in Honolulu County, such as Waikiki Beach, Waimea Bay, Lanikai Beach and Shark's Cove, were among the biggest spots for degraded reefs, Lin said.
Areas on the Big Island were also among the sites with the most degraded coral, he added.
Coral reefs are vulnerable all over the world due to ocean water warming and pollution.
A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2021 found that coral reefs could stop growing in 10 years unless greenhouse gases are significantly reduced.
Coral bleaching, a process that occurs when water is too warm and the algae the corals expel from their tissues cause them to turn completely white, is inundating reefs all over the world, including the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
In addition to their biodiversity and beauty, coral reefs serve as vital ecosystems, nurture fisheries and protect coasts....

“While Rhodes burned, tourists kept flocking in. Homes were being turned to ash, thousands of holidaymakers were being evacuated, and still the visitors came. In the wake of the Hawaii wildfires, which have killed at least 115 people, the island of Maui experienced the same phenomenon …
“Why do we travel? Maui residents told media of their horror at seeing tourists ‘swimming in the same waters our people died in’. Surely, that level of compartmentalisation in dogged pursuit of a particular experience goes beyond the pursuit of ‘leisure’? That’s certainly the view of the anthropologist Dean MacCannell. His 1976 book The Tourist: A New Theory of the Leisure Class argues that in a post-industrial, increasingly secular world, travel occupies a ritualistic space. Modern western societies are defined by the ‘freedom’ they offer us – but, he writes, this is accompanied by feelings of fragmentation and alienation. Sightseeing in far-off locales is, MacCannell observes, ‘a way of attempting to overcome the discontinuity of modernity, of incorporating its fragments into a unified experience’ …
“Modern life is marked by its impossible and contradictory obsession with the ‘authentic’, as any lifestyle marketing bod will testify to. We see travel, rather than our everyday existence, as the portal to ‘finding ourselves’ …
“As the climate crisis intensifies, the moral aspect of travel becomes even harder to defend … We need a substantial and widespread shift in both understanding why we travel – beyond simply ‘for leisure’ – and unpicking our feelings of personal entitlement to the self-actualisation and connection we expect to find in far-flung places …

But shelving that self is the only way out – and perhaps would lead us back towards more collective forms of organising society that don’t require us to go on such quests in the first place. The problem is, that would require us to cut back, stay home more, forgo cheap travel in favour of pricier and slower overland international routes, or more local excursions. And when luxury has been repackaged as basic human need, who’s going to give that up?”

So as you may have seen in my last post I spent some time on Skull Island, or at least as close and I’d care to be. Ripping off Taking a page out of @astoundingbeyondbelief ’s own Hawaii excursion I visited the Kualoa Ranch during my vacation. It’s an incredible place up along the north shore of O’ahu, and once you’re there you really feel like you’ve been transported to a lush and ancient place!!
There’s tons of movies and shows filmed there, the most relevant to this blog being Godzilla ’98 (which is incorrectly listed on their films board as Godzilla 2000 unless I’m mistaken and that was also filmed here), Kong: Skull Island, Mighty Joe Young, and the Jurassic Park/World movies. They even suggest that parts of Godzilla ‘14 was filmed there, but I couldn’t find any reference to it in the tour.
On the bus tour itself we drove through the valley and saw the filled-in footprints from G’98! I had hoped we would stop in them to stand in the footprints but that wasn’t on our tour. On the other hand we did stop in a field with a bunch of bone props from Kong: Skull Island. Most of them were well preserved, including the elder Kong and triceratops skull scene in the mass grave scene. Super cool!!
There were plenty other locations from film & tv, but the ones here were easily the highlight. If you find yourself in Honolulu sometime in the near future, definitely check it out! Well worth the admission to see the incredible signs and stand amongst kaiju movie history!!

Byodo-In Temple is a stunning replica of the Byodo-In Temple in Japan. The temple is quite beautiful and peaceful and is open to visitors of all faiths. It is a wonderful place to spend an hour or two, depending on your level of interest. The complex contains meditation areas and gardens. There are also restrooms at the back of the gift shop.
Another must-see attraction at the Byodo-In Temple is the Sacred Bell, or bon-shu. The bell is a replica of the original one found at Uji Byodo-In Temple. The distinctive tone of the bon-sho is believed to purify the mind of evil spirits.
Visitors to Oahu should not miss this Buddhist temple. Located just a 30-minute drive from Honolulu, this temple is among the top attractions on the island. The temple is located in a quiet valley and offers a peaceful atmosphere.

Recently, Crush returned to the Kona coast region of Hawaii- the place of his birth. Crush, who made the trip several weeks before his confrontation with Doink at WrestleMania IX, said he needed to recapture the brightness and excitement of his youth in order to give him direction for his future. Crush recounted his memories of the Kona coast for this publication. As a kid, Crush said he spent most of his free time on the beaches, where he often basked in the sun and informed tourists about Kona's natural history.
During his youth, Crush added, he would sail along the Kona coast and engage in free-diving, in which he would submerge himself below the water without any supplementary oxygen support. This requires an incredible amount of stamina and lung capacity. Often, he said, he would dive deep into the depths and not resurface for a while. In fact, Crush said, he can hold his breath for more than a minute when he delves into deeper waters.
He still enjoys free-diving. He said he's made many dives, some of which have taken him about 100 feet below the water's surface. Few men, even skilled free-divers, can accomplish an 80-foot free dive, let alone a 100-foot excursion. In addition to his free-diving skills, Crush enjoys rock diving, a dangerous sport in which people risk life and limb diving from high jagged rocks. When he was a youngster, he would dive off 30-foot rock cliffs and forage for shellfish and Urchins in the crystal clear waters. Now, he sald, he has made leaps from 60- and even 70-foot ledges and does so with amazing ease.
Crush also returned to Hawaii to ease his tensions. As a Federation superstar, Crush must travel the world and engage in brutal combat many times during the course of a week. When he returned to the Kona coast, he said he needed to completely unwind. Akaka Falls, Crush added, is a quintessential place to do so. This waterfall is breathtaking, rivaling the beauty of Angel Falls in South America. When problems occur, Crush continued, he retreats to his home island and spends time at Akaka Falls. The water and the magnificence of the tropical forest seem to fill his life with a sense of purpose, which he said he needed prior to his matchup with Doink the clown earlier In the month at WrestleMania IX.
