Why did tourists keep coming as Rhodes and Maui burned? It’s about far more than denial
“While Rhodes burned, tourists kept flocking in. Homes were being turned to ash, thousands of holidaymakers were being evacuated, and still the visitors came. In the wake of the Hawaii wildfires, which have killed at least 115 people, the island of Maui experienced the same phenomenon …
“Why do we travel? Maui residents told media of their horror at seeing tourists ‘swimming in the same waters our people died in’. Surely, that level of compartmentalisation in dogged pursuit of a particular experience goes beyond the pursuit of ‘leisure’? That’s certainly the view of the anthropologist Dean MacCannell. His 1976 book The Tourist: A New Theory of the Leisure Class argues that in a post-industrial, increasingly secular world, travel occupies a ritualistic space. Modern western societies are defined by the ‘freedom’ they offer us – but, he writes, this is accompanied by feelings of fragmentation and alienation. Sightseeing in far-off locales is, MacCannell observes, ‘a way of attempting to overcome the discontinuity of modernity, of incorporating its fragments into a unified experience’ …
“Modern life is marked by its impossible and contradictory obsession with the ‘authentic’, as any lifestyle marketing bod will testify to. We see travel, rather than our everyday existence, as the portal to ‘finding ourselves’ …
“As the climate crisis intensifies, the moral aspect of travel becomes even harder to defend … We need a substantial and widespread shift in both understanding why we travel – beyond simply ‘for leisure’ – and unpicking our feelings of personal entitlement to the self-actualisation and connection we expect to find in far-flung places …
“This is why the tourists pile out of airports as acrid black smoke still chokes local countryside: service to the self. But shelving that self is the only way out – and perhaps would lead us back towards more collective forms of organising society that don’t require us to go on such quests in the first place. The problem is, that would require us to cut back, stay home more, forgo cheap travel in favour of pricier and slower overland international routes, or more local excursions. And when luxury has been repackaged as basic human need, who’s going to give that up?”

Cheap flying
What is the best way to buy cheap airline tickets? Cutting back on your travel costs is certainly profitable, because it involves relatively large amounts, so every cut is extra hard. In other words: optimizing your travel budget. The most beautiful trips, already earned with savings elsewhere, in the most inexpensive way. That is double the win, but it is a matter of smart choice. Here are the tips.
Flash sales for cheap airline tickets
In technical terms it is called Flash sales. Dirt cheap tickets. You never actually see them in the newspaper and on TV and that's because everyone would think that those are the normal prices. And the airlines don't want that. They can be booked a few (two to seven) days before departure. So no early bird discount, but just filling up empty seats for a bargain price. The best way is to actively look for it yourself. Check the airline's website every few days. If you want to leave within now and three months, this is the cheapest way. Unfortunately, the tickets get even cheaper after the next round.
Limit your choice
There are so many sites and offers. It is better to search on a few good sites such as D-Reizen, Cheap tickets and a number of foreign sites and therefore the sites of the airlines. Compare them with each other and that's how you book your own candy trips. It's not free, but it can't get any cheaper.
Fly app
Most airlines these days have an app. With this you can check in, but also arrange a cheap upgrade of your flight. You can also keep an eye on the delays. You can also follow KLM on Facebook. There you will find even more interesting information.
Those last minutes are more expensive
Except for charter flights, most scheduled services are more expensive just before departure. The airlines collectively stop with the last minute offers in order to keep prices artificially high. Yet they want the chairs full, so look for those bargains, because they are there. About twelve days before departure, many prices are fixed or even very much more expensive (sometimes 250 euros more expensive). So in some places you can find cheap tickets and in other places you pay the main price just before departure. That is to serve the entire market: people who opt for comfort and have enough money or people who are forced to leave book the expensive flights just before departure and the currants forage for the Flash sales.
Fly on Tuesday
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are the cheapest days to fly. The weekend is expensive. We all want to leave for the weekend and the airlines know that. June, July, August and Christmas are the most expensive months because of the holidays and school holidays.
Booking costs of 60 euros on top of your ticket price
Does the price you see on your screen include or exclude booking costs? You hope inclusive, otherwise you just pay 50 to 70 euros extra in booking costs. The Dutch also charge the top prize for payments with credit cards. In the U.S. it's free, so book your trip smartly with an American travel agency. Ideal is completely ideal, because it is free.
You think that switching with the same airline will be cheaper... Wrong!
It is sometimes better to fly on with a reliable budget airline. Certainly outside of Europe: you can fly to Bangkok and continue there cheaper locally with, for example, a local airline like Easyjet (air Asia). Everything is more expensive in Europe. If you book through those cheaper oriental airlines, you can also take a look around Bangkok.
Luggage costs of 60 euros
Luggage costs can add up. The employees of some budget airlines even receive a premium if they 'caught' travelers with too many kilos of overweight. A kilo of excess weight in your luggage is already ten euros extra. Your hand luggage will also be checked extra.
Book cheap travel through foreign companies
If you really want to book a bit cheaper when you fly to the East, take a look at the sites of the United Emirates, Qatar and the like in the Middle East. Belgium is cheap if you can fly via Antwerp or Brussels with KLM and, for example, Joker.be.
Finally
It's still a good search. But once it's done, it becomes a sport to get from A to B so efficiently. Cheap flights exist and can seriously compete with train and car travel. The advantage is that you are there quickly. Handy if you have to return the same day. Travel lightly packed, then you pay nothing and you can go through all the gates in no time. Good trip.

Travel Smarter: How to Slash Your Airfare Costs in Half [40 Tested and approved Tricks and Hacks]
Are you tired of depressing yourself trying to figure out how to satisfy your wanderlust? You're not alone. Traveling on a budget is an art, and one of the most significant expenses is often the cost of flights. But fear not! In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore a myriad of tricks and tips to help you travel on half the price of tickets. By the end of this article, you'll be equipped with the knowledge to find great deals and explore the world without emptying your wallet. (Read to the end_100% _Worthy_applicable for every traveller)
1. Book in Advance
One of the simplest ways to save on airfare is to plan ahead. Airlines often offer cheaper fares for those who book well in advance. Aim to book your flights at least a few weeks or even months ahead of your departure date.
2. Be Flexible with Your Travel Dates
If your travel schedule allows, being flexible with your departure and return dates can lead to significant savings. Mid-week flights are often cheaper than weekend flights, and traveling during off-peak seasons can also yield lower prices.
3. Use Fare Comparison Websites
Utilize fare comparison websites and apps to your advantage. Platforms like Skyscanner, Kayak, and Google Flights allow you to compare prices across multiple airlines and booking platforms to find the best deal.
4. Sign Up for Fare Alerts
Many travel websites and airlines offer fare alert services. Sign up to receive notifications when the price of your desired route drops, allowing you to snag the best deal.
5. Consider Alternative Airports
Check if there are alternative airports near your destination. Flying to a nearby airport and using ground transportation can sometimes be more cost-effective than flying directly to your intended location.
6. Embrace Red-Eye Flights
Red-eye flights, which depart late at night and arrive in the early morning, are often cheaper. Plus, you can maximize your travel time by sleeping on the plane.
7. Travel Light
Avoid checked baggage fees by packing only what you need in a carry-on bag. This not only saves money but also time at the airport.
8. Utilize Airline Miles and Rewards
If you frequently travel, consider signing up for a frequent flyer program or credit card with travel rewards. Accumulating miles and points can lead to free or heavily discounted flights.
9. Be Patient and Persistent
Finding the best deals takes time and persistence. Don't settle for the first fare you see. Monitor prices over a period and strike when the cost is right.
10. Mix and Match Airlines
Sometimes, booking one-way flights on different airlines can be more affordable than a round-trip ticket with a single carrier.
11. Student and Youth Discounts
If you're a student or a young traveler, there are often special discounts available. Make sure to explore options like the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) and youth travel programs.
12. Join Travel Forums and Communities
Engage with travel enthusiasts on forums like TripAdvisor or Reddit's r/travel. You can gain valuable insights into deals, mistakes to avoid, and insider tips.
13. Wait for Sales and Promotions
Keep an eye out for airline sales and promotions. Airlines frequently offer discounts on specific routes or during holidays and special events.
14. Negotiate with Airlines
In some cases, you can negotiate with airlines directly, especially if you've found a better deal elsewhere. It never hurts to ask for a discount.
15. Use Loyalty Points
Check if your credit card or other loyalty programs offer opportunities to redeem points for flights or discounts.
16. Consider Nearby Cities
If your destination is in Europe, you may find it cheaper to fly to a major hub city and then take a budget airline or train to your final stop.
17. Clear Your Browser Cookies
Some believe that airlines may track your search history to increase prices. Clear your browser cookies or search in incognito mode to avoid this.
18. Be Open to Layovers
While direct flights are convenient, flights with layovers can be significantly cheaper. Use layovers as an opportunity to explore another city for a few hours.
19. Package Deals
Sometimes, booking a flight and accommodation together as a package can result in savings. Explore options from travel agencies and websites that offer package deals.
20. Embrace the Sharing Economy
Use services like economybookings for accommodations and Uber/Lyft for transportation to save on overall travel costs.
21. Hacker Fares
Hacker fares are combinations of one-way tickets from different airlines to create your own round-trip journey. They can sometimes be cheaper than traditional round-trip bookings.
22. Travel Off-Peak
Avoiding peak travel seasons can result in lower fares and more affordable accommodations. Be mindful of school holidays and major events at your destination.
23. Volunteer for Bump Compensation
In cases of overbooked flights, airlines often offer compensation to passengers who volunteer to take a later flight. This can include vouchers or even free tickets. In addition, (Sponsored) Compensair will compensate you for delayed, cancelled or denied flight 🛫 JOIN the Compensation program today and get compensations of up to 60%
24. Know Your Rights
Familiarize yourself with passenger rights and regulations. In some cases, you may be entitled to compensation for delays or cancellations.
25. Book Round-the-World Tickets
If you plan to visit multiple destinations, consider round-the-world tickets, which offer substantial savings compared to individual flights.
26. Explore Error Fares
Error fares occur when airlines or booking websites accidentally publish fares at a significantly lower price than intended. Websites like Secret Flying and Fly4Free specialize in finding and sharing these deals.
27. Consider Credit Card Rewards
Certain credit cards offer travel rewards, such as points or miles, that can be redeemed for flights or travel-related expenses. Research which credit cards align with your travel goals and apply for the one that suits you best.
28. Check for Military, Senior, and Group Discounts
If you're a member of the military, a senior citizen, or traveling as part of a group, inquire about any discounts available. Many airlines offer reduced fares for these categories.
29. Book Refundable Tickets Strategically
Refundable tickets are typically more expensive than non-refundable ones. However, if you anticipate potential changes in your travel plans, booking a refundable ticket might be cost-effective in the long run.
30. Learn to Use Airline Alliances
Major airlines are often part of global alliances, such as the Star Alliance or oneworld. Knowing how to leverage these alliances can lead to cost-effective multi-destination trips.
31. Use Miles and Points Strategically
Earning miles and points is just one part of the equation. Knowing how to use them strategically can maximize their value. Research sweet spots in airline award charts to get the most out of your miles.
32. Consider Hidden-City Ticketing
Hidden-city ticketing involves booking a flight with a layover in your actual destination city. This can sometimes be cheaper than booking a direct flight. However, it's essential to read the terms and conditions as it's often against airline policies.
33. Fly on Low-Cost Carriers
Low-cost carriers often offer significantly cheaper flights than traditional airlines. While they may not provide the same amenities, they are a cost-effective option for budget-conscious travelers.
34. Use Incognito Mode
To avoid dynamic pricing based on your search history, browse for flights in incognito or private browsing mode.
35. Negotiate Baggage Fees
When booking with budget airlines, baggage fees can add up. Negotiate or purchase baggage allowances in advance to save on additional charges at the airport.
36. Leverage Airline Vouchers
If you've been bumped from a flight, received a voucher, or encountered any issues during your journey, use these vouchers on future flights to reduce your costs.
37. Currency Exchange Savings
Sometimes, booking flights in a foreign currency can result in lower prices. Use exchange rate comparison websites to find the best deals.
38. Booking for Multiple Passengers
When booking for multiple passengers, airlines often group the fares. This can sometimes result in a higher price for all tickets. Try booking each passenger separately to potentially save money.
39. Avoid Travel Insurance from Airlines
While travel insurance is essential, purchasing it from airlines is often more expensive. Shop around for the best travel insurance deals.
40. Research Visa and Entry Requirements
Before booking international flights, check visa and entry requirements. Some destinations require a return ticket for entry. Make sure your travel plans align with these regulations.
Final Words: Mastering the Art of Budget Travel
Traveling on half the price of tickets isn't just a pipe dream; it's a reality if you're willing to put in the effort and follow these tips. As you plan your next adventure, remember that patience and flexibility are your best friends when it comes to finding the best deals. With the money saved on airfare, you'll have more to spend on experiences, accommodation, and making lifelong memories.

YOUR GUIDE TO HASSLE-FREE DOMESTIC FLIGHTS: TIPS AND TRICKS
Travelling by air can be an exciting and enjoyable experience, but it can also be a source of stress and anxiety, particularly if you are not familiar with the procedures and processes involved in domestic flights. To help ensure that your next domestic flight is hassle-free, here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind:
Tumblr media
Book your flight in advance: One of the most important things to keep in mind when planning a domestic flight is to book your tickets in advance. This will not only help you get the best deals but will also give you more time to prepare for your trip.
Check the baggage allowance: Before you pack your bags, it is important to check the baggage allowance for your flight. Most airlines have specific rules and restrictions on the size and weight of your luggage, and failing to comply with these can result in additional charges or delays.
Arrive early: It is always a good idea to arrive at the airport at least two hours before your scheduled departure time. This will give you enough time to check in, pass through security, and board your flight without feeling rushed or stressed.
Pack smart: Packing your bags for a domestic flight can be tricky, particularly if you have a lot of items to carry. To make things easier, try to pack only what you need and make sure to keep any essential items, such as medication or travel documents, in your carry-on bag.
Familiarize yourself with airport procedures: Before you travel, take some time to familiarize yourself with the procedures and processes involved in domestic flights. This includes things like check-in procedures, security requirements, and boarding procedures, which can vary depending on the airport and airline you are traveling with.
Stay connected: If you need to stay connected during your flight, consider investing in a portable Wi-Fi hotspot or purchasing a data plan from your airline. This will help you stay connected to your loved ones, work, or entertainment during your flight.
Relax and enjoy the flight: Finally, remember to relax and enjoy your flight. Domestic flights are a convenient and comfortable way to travel, and with a little preparation and planning, you can make sure that your next flight is hassle-free and enjoyable.

Athens travel guide number ONE
Nestled amidst the picturesque landscape of Greece, Athens stands as a living testament to the essence of civilization. Stepping onto its ancient streets is like stepping back in time, where every corner resonates with stories of gods, philosophers, and epic tales. The crown jewel of Athens, the Acropolis, reigns majestically over the city. The Parthenon, with its iconic columns and intricate details, is a beacon of ancient architectural brilliance that has weathered the sands of time.
But Athens isn't just a city trapped in the past – it's a dynamic blend of history and modernity. As you stroll through the historic Plaka neighborhood, you'll find yourself lost in its labyrinthine alleys adorned with bougainvillaeas, quaint cafes, and souvenir shops. The energy of Monastiraki's bustling markets is infectious, offering an array of treasures from antiques to local crafts.
For art enthusiasts, the city offers a treasure trove of museums. The National Archaeological Museum showcases an unparalleled collection of artifacts that span centuries, while the Benaki Museum presents Greek history in a captivating narrative. Contemporary art finds its home in neighborhoods like Metaxourgio, where street art and galleries reflect the city's ever-evolving creative pulse.
As the day draws to a close, Athens transforms. The city's vibrant nightlife comes alive in areas like Gazi and Psiri, where restaurants, bars, and clubs promise a memorable evening. Yet, the allure of Athens' beauty isn't limited to its urban realm. A short drive leads to the Athenian Riviera, where the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea lap against the coastline. The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, perched atop cliffs, offers a stunning panorama, especially at sunset.
youtube
In Athens, the past and present coalesce to create an experience that resonates deeply. The rich tapestry of its history, the warmth of its people, and the fusion of old and new make this city an enchanting destination that transcends time itself. Embark on a journey to Athens, and let its stories, flavors, and landscapes etch themselves into your heart forever.

So I did a little research on Azores and found this blog called Geeky Explorer by an Azorean named Bruno. A wealth of information, you should check it out.
What I learned is that Azores has a pretty temperate climate, never really getting colder than 10°C (50°F) in winter. Having said that, it does rain a lot, with the most rain falling November to February. It gradually tapers off month by month until the driest months (July, August) then gradually rains more and more each month as we head back into winter.
For people who love the beach and swimming in the ocean, the best time to go is August, as it's not only hot but the ocean is warmer by then. July and September are also excellent beach-going months.
I, however, hate the beach. Suntanning is boring and I can't swim, and I'm not a huge fan of sand getting into my everything. Plus wearing a bathing suit means I have to shave all the unmentionables.
Is there anything to do in Azores besides hang out at the beach, though? Turns out there is! There's whale watching! There are 10 species of whale and dolphin that are commonly sighted throughout the year, plus many more that could potentially be seen if you're really lucky. Some species hang around all year, but others only show up for a couple of months. Prime whale watching season is end of March until July.
Another thing to do in Azores is to soak in thermal baths. I love thermal baths. Thermal baths, being thermal, are best enjoyed when the weather is cooler (i.e. not July and August).
So it looks like I'm a shoulder season kind of gal.
As luck would have it, there are low-cost flights still available from Toronto to Ponta Delgada at the end of March. I'm going to hypothetically book a flight!
The cheapest flight actually makes a stop at Terceira, which is one of the other islands. There's a layover of over 5 hours, which makes the entire flight a whopping 12 hours long! So I thought, if the plane is stopping in Terceira anyway, why not just book a flight to Terceira and continue on to Ponta Delgada from there?
The flight leaves YYZ in the evening and arrives TER in the morning. So you just fall asleep on the plane and you're in Azores before you know it!

This flight departs Tuesday, March 28 and arrives Wednesday, March 29.

Look at this. The price of the ticket is actually only $96.50! The rest of the $341 is taxes and "charges".

You get one 23kg (50 lb) luggage and one 8kg (17 lb) carry-on included in the price.

I've pretend booked it ✌️ We're going to Azores, baby!
Maybe I should learn a bit of Portuguese before we leave 🤔
