In the early glow of the morning Sun Teddy drew closer to this yellow flower. It might have been the first orchid that Teddy ever found that wasn’t in a pot. Have you found an orchid outside of a supermarket aisle before? i.e in nature?

A Walk Under Moody Skies
Tumblr media
A fond look back at traipsing thru the Wicklow Mountains in Co Wicklow Ireland.
We were in Ireland late last year, and early on in our two weeks across the pond we had a chance to spend time with family down in County Wicklow just south of Dublin.
My wife and I spent a day exploring about the Wicklow Mountains between Glendalough and Lough Tay, and had a ton of fun out in nature doing so.
Let's go exploring, international edition.

Why did tourists keep coming as Rhodes and Maui burned? It’s about far more than denial
“While Rhodes burned, tourists kept flocking in. Homes were being turned to ash, thousands of holidaymakers were being evacuated, and still the visitors came. In the wake of the Hawaii wildfires, which have killed at least 115 people, the island of Maui experienced the same phenomenon …
“Why do we travel? Maui residents told media of their horror at seeing tourists ‘swimming in the same waters our people died in’. Surely, that level of compartmentalisation in dogged pursuit of a particular experience goes beyond the pursuit of ‘leisure’? That’s certainly the view of the anthropologist Dean MacCannell. His 1976 book The Tourist: A New Theory of the Leisure Class argues that in a post-industrial, increasingly secular world, travel occupies a ritualistic space. Modern western societies are defined by the ‘freedom’ they offer us – but, he writes, this is accompanied by feelings of fragmentation and alienation. Sightseeing in far-off locales is, MacCannell observes, ‘a way of attempting to overcome the discontinuity of modernity, of incorporating its fragments into a unified experience’ …
“Modern life is marked by its impossible and contradictory obsession with the ‘authentic’, as any lifestyle marketing bod will testify to. We see travel, rather than our everyday existence, as the portal to ‘finding ourselves’ …
“As the climate crisis intensifies, the moral aspect of travel becomes even harder to defend … We need a substantial and widespread shift in both understanding why we travel – beyond simply ‘for leisure’ – and unpicking our feelings of personal entitlement to the self-actualisation and connection we expect to find in far-flung places …
“This is why the tourists pile out of airports as acrid black smoke still chokes local countryside: service to the self. But shelving that self is the only way out – and perhaps would lead us back towards more collective forms of organising society that don’t require us to go on such quests in the first place. The problem is, that would require us to cut back, stay home more, forgo cheap travel in favour of pricier and slower overland international routes, or more local excursions. And when luxury has been repackaged as basic human need, who’s going to give that up?”

at the moment there are 3 young german children absolutely loving Ianto by our front door. they all came in and looked around with their parents, but Ianto was their main draw.
Having now had a dog in my museum for a few months, vs. not having a dog in any other museum I firmly believe that dogs add to the museum experience. so many of our guests - national and international are missing their dogs. so having ianto be so open to pets etc really helps them feel welcome. He loved on a little girl - maybe 8 months old - who loves puppies but whose own dog was too exuberant to get to spend time with her. he welcomed 2 older american ladies who initially just came to see him, but then loved their time in the museum as well!
so, new advocacy project: therapy dogs in museum entrances! (this is only three quarters of a joke).

Teddy dared to get close to these red flowers, taking a chance as they looked like they could be a Crown of Thorns. He was hopeful that in reality they were the thorn-less variety and wouldn’t poke his little nose as he tried to steal a sniff. Either they smelled great or he didn’t get poked because Teddy didn’t complain and instead had a smile on his lips.

Looking Towards Bray
Tumblr media
It was a long flight.
We were exhausted after 11 hours in the air on the way to Dublin Ireland, but we knew we had to stay up and awake until our proper local time bedtime. This is crucial if you want to get a leg up on preventing jet-lag.
We landed, picked up our rental car, and drove down to Wicklow where we were staying for a couple days, but there is no doubt we were exhausted as neither one of us slept much on the flight over from California. Because of this we knew we had to get active for a bit to find our second (maybe third?) wind. The family we were staying with recommended a section of the Cliff Walk that runs along the coast for a number of miles. It was a 10 minute walk from the house, and 25-30 minutes down to the harbor. With 15 minutes of wandering about down there and, the return trip to the house, we managed to get in about an hour and 20 minutes of quality wandering to get our blood flowing to wake us up a bit.
It worked.
We were able to stay up to about 11 or so local time so we could stave off the jet-lag at the start of two weeks in Ireland. On top of being a useful little wander that served a greater purpose than to simply see the sights, the golden hour conditions and the view looking north up the coast towards Bray was sublime. The conditions contributed to a certain sense of tranquility that really helped to ease the tension from the long flight over.
Let's go exploring, international edition.
