Friday Night Shots - The Shelf of Shame
Friday Night Shots - The Shelf of Shame @gmtgames @Pandasaurusgame @HBuchanan2 @Volko26
Yes, I know it’s Saturday. But after a day of having a hole punched in our wall and then another day of long driving (which was great and I picked up a couple of awesome-looking games, but it was long), I wasn’t in the mood to write anything last night. The rum flowed better tonight, though this is still going to be a fairly short post compared to some of mine. So welcome back to the bar!…

Some musicians' cover songs reveal a plan for their careers as they decided to present some interesting tunes with their own versions of them. I agree, Laura Branigan probably didn't intend to do her own variants of so many compositions, yet her entire opus ended up being full of them. One of her biggest hits is this, well, ballad, I guess? I am not really sure how to see this tune, though I have the same problem with the original. They are both somehow an expression of the urban paranoia one can feel during the nights. However, we are never sure, on whether or not either Raf or Laura Branigan embrace this. While the entire piece remains an enigma we cannot answer for sure, Branigan infuses her edition with a certain determination Raf is afraid to show for … reasons?

Like Bjorn Ironside pretending to be dead and getting his coffin only to suppress attack, what’s the coolest battle/fight tactics in history?
I'm going to preface this with the fact that 1) There are too many to list here (or anywhere really) and 2) I'm limited to what I personally know.
That said, here are a few that spring to mind:
Richard III's last charge at the Battle of Bosworth Field. Not only did he get within a sword's length of killing Henry Tudor himself but Richard also killed Henry's standard-bearer, Sir William Brandon, AND unhorsed burly John Cheyne, his older brother's former standard-bearer. Not bad for a guy who would today qualify for the Special Olympics. (The Japanese equivalent would be Sanada Yukimura.)
Harold Godwinson marching his army 185 miles (or 298 km) in just four days to take the Norwegians by surprise at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. (Honorable mention goes to the soldier who got in a barrel and floated under the bridge to spear the Viking holding off the entire English army. Chevalier de Bayard, a real life knight in shining armor, later replicated this feat by holding off 200 Spanish knights single-handedly at the Battle of Garigliano.)
When the rebels started chanting "Henry Percy King" at the Battle of Shrewsbury, Henry IV shouted back "Henry Percy is dead." Needless to say, Henry Percy did not respond. (His eldest son, the future Henry V (or as Shakespeare names him in his youth, Prince Hal), took an arrow to the face in this same battle, which is why Henry V's portraits always depict him from his uninjured side.)
Hannibal crossing the Alps and whooping Rome's ass multiple times on its own turf. (There's a reason "Hannibal ad portas" became a saying. Also, Napoleon I later replicated this feat.)
At the Battle of Bremule, a Norman knight seized the reins of Louis the Fat's horse, shouting "the king is taken!" Louis' response? Hitting the guy with his mace and shouting "the king is not taken, neither at war, nor at chess!"
Alexander the Great turning the island city of Tyre into a peninsula.
Alexander Buchanan killing Thomas, Duke of Clarence at the Battle of Bauge and holding the dead duke's coronet aloft on his lance.
Thanks for the question, anon

( reposted from my main blog now that I have a descendants specific sideblog, with some characters that I forgot the first time! ) – I’m not recasting anyone from canon, just live action casting for Wicked World & Isle Of The Lost characters!  If I’ve forgotten anyone, or if there’s any interest in parent-casting, lmk because I had a lot of fun doing this!  Special shoutout to @humaudrey for helping me decide between a couple of options!
Feel free to use any of these ideas if they help you!  I’d appreciate credit but it’s not really necessary, but if you do use them please tag me or send me a link so that I can see what other people come up with!
I have my own collection of descendants characters ( part 1 / part 2 / desktop ) so some of my castings were based around my own collection of descendants kids (not reusing faces I used for mine & wanting them to work as siblings to some I’ve made) but without further ado, here we go!

Esther's by Brad and Alleson Buchanan

Play the game See other reviews of the game See the source code of the game
============= Synopsis
At Esther's cafe your adorable host Served cheese to the mice when they wanted toast! That won't bother Harold's robust appetite, But Janie insists that the order's not right.
============= Other Info
Esther's is a short Twine (Snowman) interactive game, submitted to the 2022 Edition of the IFComp. It ranked 17th overall. AFAIK this is also the first piece of IF from both these authors.
Status: Completed Genre: Slice of Life, Children's Book
CW: none listed. Note: Rodents
============= Playthrough
First Played: 3-Oct-2022* Last Played: 22-May-2023 Playtime: around 5min Rating: 5 /5 Thoughts: A delightful brunch, even if cut short.
*I had reviewed the game during the IFComp in the Author's section (which was hidden to the public). I forgot to keep track of the notes I gave though... You can find the OG review under the cut.
============= Review
The game follows a couple of rodent having brunch at the eponymous Esther's, a fake restaurant manned by Ester, a little girl, as they try their best to communicate with the girl about their meal wish: mimosa and avocado toast.
Spoilers ahead. It is recommended to play the game first. The review is based on my understanding/reading of the story.
Harrold and Jaime, a cute mice couple have a weekly tradition: going to Esther's on Saturdays to have brunch, ordering avocado toast and mimosa. However, Jaime is tired of Esther messing their order every time, only serving cheese for the two mice. Today's about to change.
Through a series of choices, forming a puzzle to circumvent the communication issues between the mice and Esther. The girl not speaking squeak, the mice have to find other ways to get what they ordered.
While this might sound like a hassle, there is no way to fail the game, since the choices railroad you into getting that mimosa and that avocado toast (and the pudding for dessert!). As an adult playing this, it might not feel as entertaining to get pushed down a path, but the target audience seems to be for young children. This is also made extra obvious with the large BACK option on the left corner of the page, that one can undo actions at will.
With that in mind, the game is a delight! It is simple enough, with a distinctive tone, an illusion of agency for the player, wonderful illustrations one could find in Potter's or Dahl's books, and a tight little bow wrapping the story at the end.
Further than the gorgeous illustration, the formatting of the game is very reminiscing of children's literature, with the type-print font and the page-like formatting, the characters' names coloured according to their design, the little avocado indicating a potential action. It is a well-thought out and executed short game.
There is an extra at the end of the game, with snippets of behind-the-scenes, with the constructions of the paths to the different illustration drafts. It truly is the cherry on top of a well constructed and delicious cake.
The only downside of this game is its shortness. 5 min gives just a taste of how lovely the characters are, but leave you wanting more. You know those two mice would get into more shenanigans, and you really want to read more of it when the game ends...
This is worthy of a Sequel, at least, or a collection of mini adventures (if the authors ever decide to do so...)
=======================
OG Review during the IFComp (where I over use the word delight)
Lil’ avocado :avocado: and an adorable kid. I know there are fluffy and cute IF games on the internet, but they seem to be hard to find. A lot of what I come across is very serious and dark. Esther’s is a delightful short piece where you try to help a couple of mouse have a nice brunch for once. It has a cute little puzzle, that ,while simple to solve, leaves you delightfully fulfilled by the end. Yes this game is very delightful and I will definitely overuse this word. The illustrations are very reminiscing of children’s book (the game is noted as being children’s litt), like the ones in Potter’s or Roald Dahl’s books. It fits the theme and tone so delightfully. Even the formatting of the text remind me of books I had when I was really small. My only complain is that the piece is too short. The story is compact and to the point. But I would love to go on more shenanigans with Harold and Janie. Is there a series of adventures with these two? I would play the heck out of 5min stories with those two. Overall, the game gave me warm feelings in my heart and leaving me wanting more.
Note: as a participant of the IFComp, I was sent a sheet of stickers with those illustrations too :P
Also found out I'm even on one of the author's website in the review list page, lol.
2022-10-03 Manonamora. I would play the heck out of 5min stories with those two.

🏳️‍🌈 Happy Pride 🏳️‍🌈 🎉
It took me forever to get this done because my stupid computer was acting up, but here it is.
I figured it would be nice to acknowledge official representation within The Sims franchise that isn't in The Sims 4.
I messed around with pose player for the first time and used a different reshade preset called 90s nostalgia.
Tumblr media
"Dylan's preference for wearing suits might be the scandal of the century, but she doesn't mind. Audrey desperately wants a child, and now science has made it possible. What impact will a child have on their lives?"
Say hello to the Shear family from The Sims 3 store world 'Roaring Heights'. The first openly same-sex couple in the franchise to date. We have Audrey on the left, Dylan on the right and little Charlie in the middle.
Tumblr media
"On the outside, Rita and Mark appear to be a happily married couple but they've both fallen in love with other people. Will they risk scandal or work to stay together?"
Another two pairs from roaring heights it seems. Rita and Mark, who are both sat on the couch, are married, but are in secret same-sex relationships with the people behind them. According to the wiki, Rita and Mark are based of of Daisy and Thomas Buchanan from The Great Gatsby.
Rita is also said to be a refrence to writer Vita Sackville-West, who was the lover of writer Virginia Woolf, who the sim behind Rita (Virginia Supine) is based on.
Mark is also said to be based on a British Politician named Harold Nicolson who was the husband of Vita Sackville-West. His lover behind him is called Michael Dandy, who is said to be based on the main character of The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby. In the novel, Jay is in love with Daisy Buchanan, who Rita is based on. Here, they appear to have put a twist on the original novel, and made his love interest the husband instead.
Here are a few more honorable mentions.
Tumblr media
"With the loss of his partner, Leonard Ryan hated the thought of having to sell his home. He looked for a roommate so they wouldn't have to move out of town. Now he has time to devote to his son and to his research."
Sorry for the terrible quality pictures, these where literally all I could find for this family. The Ryan family are from The Sims 3 for console, living in Moonlight Bay.
Leonard Ryan (left) recently lost his husband, Jeffrey Ryan (middle) and now lives with roommates who are also single dad's in 'The Single Dads household' with his adopted son Logan.
Technically this would make them the first openly same-sex couple in The Sims franchise since it came out before Roaring Heights (I looked it up) but the sims wiki seems confused about which couple is the first. Maybe the whole dead husband thing disqualifies them.
Tumblr media
Kiki Blunt (left) is a villain in The Urbz: Sims In The City (the best spinoff, fite me). It doesn't happen in the game, but in a comic called Urbz Comix, "Central Station", Kiki is in a relationship with a cage fighter named 'Anna Kissed' (right). In the comic, local bully Urangoo Mcbain, bursts into the tattoo parlor, and demands to be serviced, as he wants to become Anna Kissed's 'Dream Punk'. After an exhausting session, Urangoo attemps to leave without paying, but is stopped by being hoisted up by the nipples, by a magnetic machine. Later, Anna Kissed is told the story, who finds it amusing, and states that she already has her 'Dream Punk' and points to Kiki Blunt. See the last page of the comic below.
Tumblr media
Whew, that's all I could find.
I'm curious, how do you play the sims families I talked about?

MCU sword and sorcery au
This is a purely medieval setting like Narnia, the dragon prince or Warcraft. Mostly because I don’t want to clog up my modern fantasy/88 tag. Anyway. Let’s begin
The kingdom of California: oldest kingdom, technologically advanced and prosperous. Allied with Manhattan.
Anthony Stark. King
Virginia Stark. Queen.
Morgan Stark. Only child and heir
Peter Parker. Anthony’s ward and squire
Harley Keener. Anthony’s beneficiary and squire.
James Rhodes. Knight and Anthony’s best friend
Harold Hogan. Anthony’s bodyguard
May Hogan. Peter’s aunt and guardian. Virginia’s lady’s maid. Harold’s wife

Laura Barton. Queen
Cooper Barton. First born and heir
Lila Barton. Middle child.
Nathaniel Barton. Youngest child
Natasha Banner. Clinton’s adoptive sister. Captain of the army. Bruce’s wife
Wanda Rogers. Clinton’s ward and court mage. Stevens wife.
Pietro Maximoff. Clinton’s ward, Wanda’s twin brother and assistant.
Thomas Rogers. Wanda’s son. Inherited her magic. Steven’s stepson
William Rogers. Wanda’s son. Inherited her magic. Thomas’s twin brother. Steven’s stepson
Kate Bishop. Clinton’s ward and star archer.
Yelena Belova. Natasha’s long lost sister. Knight in training
Allies to the allied kingdoms: these people live on the border between California and Manhattan and have helped them both. Sometimes against their better judgment
Henry Pym. Inventor.
Janet Pym. Inventor. Henry’s wife
Scott Lang. Small time bandit. Ally to Steven Stark
Hope Lang. Inventor. Henry and Janet’s daughter. Scott’s second wife
James Paxton. Sheriff.
Margaret Paxton. James Paxton’s wife. Scott’s ex wife
Cassandra Lang. Scott and Maggie’s daughter
Stephen Strange. Healer. Sorcerer at Kamar-Taj.
Kingdom of Asgard and the Guardians: Asgard is a kingdom in the vast mountain ranges. The Guardians are a group of freelance mercenaries currently settled in the kingdom
Thor Odinson. King
Valkyrie Odinson. Queen
Loki Laufeyson. Frost Giant. Thor’s adoptive brother. And a constant pain in his side.
Sylvie Laufeydottir. Frost Giant. Loki’s literal other half and lover
Peter Quill. Half dark magus. Leader of the Guardians. Grew up as part of the marauding Ravagers before setting off on his own
Gamora Quill. Orc. Adoptive daughter of a warlord before she escaped. Fantastic warrior. Quill’s wife.
Drax. Troll. A great warrior and chieftain until his entire clan was wiped out. Now allied with Quill
Rocket. Used to be a regular human. But was cursed into the form of a sentient raccoon. Weapons expert
Groot. The spirit of a sentient tree. Rocket’s surrogate son
Mantis Quill. Half wood elf. Half dark magus. Peter Quill’s half sister. Drax’s adoptive daughter
Kraglin Obfonteri. Human. Quill’s adoptive brother in their old Ravagers clan
Nebula Obfenteri. Dark elf. Gamora’s adoptive sisters. Also escaped from Thanos a little while after her. Sees Anthony as a father figure. Kraglin’s wife.
The heretic hoard: criminals, murderers and villains working against the allied kingdoms
Thanos. Orc warlord. Kidnapped trained and abused Gamora and Nebula from a young age
Obadiah Stane. Anthony’s old regent. Uses his knowledge of the kingdom to help the hoard win
Quentin Beck. Dark magus. Anthonys former mage. Is the only one who’s ever come close to beating Parker in a fight.
Yon-Rogg. Carol’s former mentor who intentionally sabotaged her training to keep her under his thumb.
Agatha Harkness. Psychotic witch. Wanda’s nemesis.
Alexander Pearce. Former friend and ally of Nicholas Fury.
Mobius M Mobius. Loki and Sylvia’s former captor.
Eugene Thompson. Dark magus in training. Quentin’s protégé. Peter Parker’s old bully.

New to Me #boardgames - August 2022 @LookoutSpiele @gmtgames @RavensburgerNA @BGTables @BlueOrangeGames @Quinedgames @HBuchanan2
September has been a weird month. School has started again, so work has been busy. I just haven’t really felt up to writing anything, but I don’t usually let that get in the way of doing at least this post. However, things have just come up. Like suddenly being able to play a bunch of action games on my computer and thus spending time doing that instead of, you know, writing. I’ve picked up…

"Volunteer Farm Help Promised," Windsor Star. April 20, 1943. Page 5. -- Committee of 10 Named to Organize Army; Press for Aid by Conchies ---- Initial steps for the organizing of a large land emergency army of Windsor citizens willing to pledge part time farm service were taken at a meeting of delegates of 20 city organizations held in the Women's Division of National Selective Service last night.
PREDICTS MILK RATIONING The action followed addresses by representative farmers and canners who described the general situation as so serious that it needed immediate attention. One speaker, Albert L Bruner of Ruthven, told the meeting that a survey has shown the dairy problem to be such that he asserted that milk rationing by September could not be avoided.
The crop outlook was also stated to be most serious due to reluctance of farmers to plant larger crops than they feel might be harvested.
Called by the Windsor National Selective Service Advisory Committee, the meeting was presided over by La W. Wheelton, chairman. A committee of ten representing different Windsor groups was authorized to organize the land army and temporary headquar- ters for the registration of volunteers in the National Selective Service office.
Those appointed were Miss M Catherine Straith. representing the Local Council of Women: L. P. Laforet, for the war veterans: Fred Steele, labor: R. A. Clark, of the Canadian Industries Limited, industry; N. W. Harold, secretary of the YMCA, youth: Very Rev. Wilfrid J. Langlois, dean of Essex County, the churches, The chamber of commerce, city council, service clubs and retail merchants are also to be asked to name representatives.
UNHARVESTED CROPS "They do not want to spend a lo of money on planting unless they are assured of adequate help for harvesting." Charles O'Brien, of Roseland. member of the Essex County Farm Manpower Committee, said, telling of the farmers' position. "Many of them lost a lot of their crops last year be- cause they could not get help or machinery to do the work."
A charge that 462,000 bushels of soybeans alone went to waste in Kent and Essex counties last year because it couldn't be harvested was made by Mr. O'Brien. who gave figures published in a government issue of "The Canadian Coarse Grains Review" under his authority. In addition, he said, he had personal knowledge of many acres of hay and tomatoes rotting in fields because of lack of help.
"When food is so vitally needed by the United Nations we can not afford to allow that again next year," he said, urging preventive action. "Canned goods of some kinds are hard to get now because of those crop losses last year and it will be worse next winter," said H. E. Stokely, of Essex, chairman of the county farm manpower committee.
Mr. Stokely said farmers would face a crisis in harvest time if they did not get help. "We are asking them to plant more and to get them to do so we must give them assurance that we can find the help to do the harvesting." he said.
A recommendation that the committee press the government to speed up action on its decision to place conscientious objectors on farms was endorsed by the meeting after John Coghill, Kingsville tobacco grower, stated that the government had approved such action but the help was needed at once. "I put in a bid for two of these boys in February and haven't got them yet," he said. Under the plan approved, the con scientious objectors would be paid $25 per month and the rest of their wages paid would go to the Red Cross and other services.
FAVORS SOLDIER AID Mr. Wheelton suggested that a proposal to release some soldiers in army camps on a basis of three days military training and three days farm working might be practical. He said he didn't see why it wouldn't be useful for the area around such places as Chatham.
Alex Buchanan, veterans' representative, suggested the committee ask for special gasoline allowance for those assisting in the transportation of volunteer farm workers, Harry Lassaline, secretary of the chamber of commerce, read a list of proposals from his organization which called for the early setting up of a downtown recruiting office for farm volunteers, arrangements for transportation and organization of mobile farm units.
Other speakers included Harold Clark of Harrow, H. B. Taggart of Kingsville, A. B. Morgan of Belle River, B. Ormseth of Tecumseh, E. J. Parent of the C.I.O., and Kenneth Jordan, secretary of Windsor and district Boy Scouts, and Mrs. Cameron Montrose, president of the Local Council of Women, all of whom gave assurance of co-operation.

PFC Harold Buchanan and His Kairos Moments
PFC Harold Buchanan and His Kairos Moments
PFC Harold Buchanan was just 18 years old in 1943. He was on leave for three days to say goodbye to his friends and family in Missouri before being shipped out to WWII. As he drove down the narrow road, he spied something. (Tri-City Herald)
He parked his 1935 Chevy carefully at the edge of the road to make sure no one would hit his car.
“There was a valley, we called it a gully, kind of in a…
