Patience
Chained Memories AU
(Day 3 of Monkie Destiny Challenge Prompt Month Oct. 2023)
Wordcount: 1.1k
Summary: She’s everything he used to be: reckless, impulsive, impatient. The Huntsman grants him this one task; he’s asked to train her to become the future of this kingdom. She doesn’t listen to him. Doesn’t think straight when she’s in danger. And despite every bone in his body telling him to leave her, Sun Wukong won’t give up on her.
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯
“She’s your responsibility.”
Erlang’s voice is nature masked in a hollow tune. It never rises in anger, never lowers even in sorrow. He held the young dragon by the scruff, piloting her around as if she were nothing but a sheet of paper to hand in to the right official. They caught her sneaking into the armory, sword and shield on either hand after the doors slammed opened and the room filled with guards—she was handed to Sun Wukong afterwards, bruised and covered in soot.
Erlang’s voice does not allow room for discussion, Sun Wukong knows this by heart. He spent every day of his life getting accustomed to every change in tone, every opening for a discussion, he knows when the Elder Sage’s word is final and when Wukong should remember his place. He does not argue, doesn’t raise his voice, simply accepts his handed task with a neutral smile.
“I hate this,” she snaps, voice full of hurt and vile. She stays on the floor, chest heaving with large puffs of air, eyes unfocused and looking anywhere but him. The guandao she’d chosen is shattered to pieces and Wukong reaches for it calmly, stringing it together with chains of gold and ichor. She huffs louder this time, “I know how to fight already.”
“Your version of fighting, kid, is swinging your sword around like nothing and then wondering why you got bruises.” He stays beside her. Even when she tries to swat his tail away—he stays.
Doesn’t quite know why yet.
She’s nothing like him. She’s reckless and loud. He finds her staring at the portraits and paintings of the palace halls, eyeing each detail with a careful eye, and when he asks what she’s looking for she answers with confidence. She’s looking for their weaknesses. She’s found them—recites them back to him as they walk back to the gardens, and he stays quiet for the most part. Now, he looks at her. Really looks at her and he doesn’t know how to describe her in full.
Or, in a way, he knows who she reminds him of. And that thought alone is uncomfortable.
She’s mid-complaint when he drops the dull end of the weapon against her forehead. “Shush,” he chastises, purposefully bringing his voice to a deeper tone. “To channel your inner strength, child, you have to learn one of man’s greatest challenges of all—”
“How to kill a monkey in less than five moves?” Xiaojiao grins, tilting her head towards him.
“No, how dare you,” Wukong sniffs. He smacks her with the guandao again, just as gentle, and then drags her into a sitting position. He stands beside her before crossing his legs mid-air, his cloud forming comfortably under him. She groans, attempting to cross her legs just the same with more force than necessary. “You’re going to master the art of taking in everything at once while concentrating on one thing.”
“That’s so unnecessary.”
“It’s patience.”
“So unnecessary.”
“What has patience taught you?” Xiaojiao adds, turning her nose up at him. She doesn’t mean it. He’s used to her—well, to say he’s used to her is… difficult, at best. She’s with him everyday at the same hour. They stay in the mortal realm because Heaven forbid the girl is allowed near the peach gardens again. This garden is meant to be a replica. It smells of apricots and peacherines, not the same smell as the original fruits, but it would have to do. Xiaojiao rubs her middle finger and thumb together, staring up at the tree branches, eyes watching its movements as it sways with a small breeze.
She snaps her fingers and a smile forms on her lips when the lowest fruit, unripe and hard, starts to fall from its perch. She opens her hand, ready to catch it—and Wukong slaps it away, the stone fruit smacking loudly against the trunk of the nearest tree, and ignores the loud, unfiltered groan of frustration she lets out.
“Seriously Wukong!” she snaps, pushing the palm of her hands into her eyes, frustration seething out of her mouth in the form of steam.
“What?” Wukong muses, nonchalant. “It was unripe. You were going to eat raw fruit. Checkmate. Sit properly.”
“All fruit is raw,” Xiaojiao spits with a muffled whine, straightening her back. She grunts when Wukong smacks her shoulders with his tail, forcing her to sit in a more proper position. She scowls and he ignores it, lifting a finger up mockingly.
“But it wouldn’t be raw if you had the patience to cook it and prepare it into a nice meal.”
She doesn’t say anything for a moment and he refuses to open his eyes. The words felt wrong from the moment he opened his lips and he does not need the added scoff of laughter she gives him in return. He reaches out blindly and shushes her, gently running his hand down her face.
“You don’t make any sense, master,” Xiaojiao sniffs, finally closing her eyes and breathing out slowly.
“I’m just trying to teach you a lesson,” Wukong murmurs. “Think of it this way: if you rush into things you’ll end up tasting rot and tar on your tongue instead of honey and nectar. Why? Because while you’re busy bashing your way through Heaven’s guards and the scholars and even the yao that attack villages and run around in rampage—you destroy everything in your path. Too impatient to think of a way to save the village without burning it down in the process.”
He lowers his cloud until he’s able to bump his shoulder against Xiaojiao softly. “Do you understand? I don’t want you to destroy anything; I want you to save everything.”
Xiaojiao inhales deeply. Her mouth opens, a light sigh escaping her lungs, and she opens her eyes, now a vibrant hint of red in the center of her irises, her smile wide and full of fangs. “That’s lame,” she beams, and quickly gets up, snatching the guandao from beside Wukong and aims for the fruit that’s furthest from her.
She throws the weapon and catches it when it falls down, several fruit falling from their perches, one of them narrowly avoiding Wukong’s leg. She grabs it and takes a large bite out of it, humming with delight at how sweet it is.
Wukong smiles, a tired exhale leaving him. “What am I going to do with you?” he murmurs softly.

I started playing the second danganrompa game and the trial part where you have to match the beat is the hardest for me to do because I suck at rhythm.
(why do I love monokuma better then anyone else in the game?..)
