Read the new GollanczFest sample book excerpt of the Devils and it seems promising! It will be interesting to see if Diaz is a main POV or not, I really like him but I wouldn't be surprised if his little accident at the end is actually quite a big accident and the POV switches after that 😆. I'd like to think he makes it to his meeting, though.
I love the title of Part 1: Worst. Princess. Ever.
The only names we know so far are Diaz & Alex. Both seem like quite common names (though probably in-keeping with the reimagined medieval setting?), so it'll be interesting to see if that will be the case for the rest of the cast. Bearing in mind the title of Part 1, I think maybe there's some conscious anachronism happening, though? Need more data!
Am I going to massively overhype this book despite all my best efforts, like how I did with TWOC? Almost definitely. But I am excited!!

I am a few days late with this post because, well, I totally forgot about it. However, I am pleased to report that October was a fantastic reading month for me! I struggled a little in September, but was able to turn things around this past month. So pleased!
Take a look at what I read and hauled in the month of October.
  Books I read
Angel Mage by Garth Nix (review)
Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson (review)
The Sharp Edge of a Snowflake by Sif Sigmarsdóttir
Blood of Assassins by RJ Barker
The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson
One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus
Thornhill by Pam Smy
The ABC Murders by Agatha Christie
Binti by Nnedi Okorafor
The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie Rubenhold
Murder in Mesopotamia by Agatha Christie
Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham
Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman
So I read 13 books in October, which is kind of amazing. Most of my reading success is due to audiobooks, which saved me. I also think that switching to some crime books rather than just reading fantasy helped as well! The top book of the month was definitely The Five, which is an amazing nonfiction book that you all should pick up!
  Books I bought
War Girls by Tochi Onyebuchi
Binti: The Complete Trilogy by Nnedi Okorafor
A Song for a New Day by Sarah Pinsker
The Thing Itself by Adam Roberts
We Are the Dead by Mike Shackle
I bought all of these during Gollanczfest. I choose to blame Gollancz for my book shopping this month! Otherwise, I wouldn’t have bought a single book in October.
  Book post
Realm of Ash by Tasha Suri
The Pursuit of William Abbey by Claire North
The Unspoken Name by A. K. Larkwood
Warrior of the Altaii by Robert Jordan
The Infinite Noise by Lauren Shippen
Gamechanger by L. X. Bennett
The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White
The Sky Weaver by Kristen Ciccarelli
I was blessed by the book post gods this month and received some absolutely amazing books! A huge shout out to Tor Books, who sent the majority of these books including Warrior of the Altaii, one of my most anticipated reads for the year! The book I’m looking forward to most, however, is definitely Realm of Ash!
That’s it for this month, guys. What did you read in October? Did you pick up any amazing new books? Let me know!
More than doubling September's reading results! Monthly Reading Wrap-Up: October 2019 #bookblogger I am a few days late with this post because, well, I totally forgot about it. However, I am pleased to report that October was a fantastic reading month for me!

Opportunities missed
Opportunities missed at #GollanczFest, or how I wished I'd said hello to @joannechocolat, @tomlloydwrites, @ak_benedict, @cadigan and others
As I may have mentioned, I spent the day on Saturday at the rather splendid GollanczFest, at Foyles bookshop in London. There was a selection of splendid authors taking part in a variety of fascinating, funny, informative panels across the day, with the opportunity to get books signed in the morning and afternoon. A splendid time was had by all, but at the end of the day (well, more the following…

Fantasy Review | The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
Fantasy Review | The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
I’ve had Locke Lamora on my shelf since it was first published. I asked for it, I got it, and I never read it. It has sat there, as desperate and dutiful as only an unread book can be, and I have ignored it in favour of other things for far too long. So, with the opportunity to attend GollanczFest with many SFF authors in attendance including Locke Lamora’s author Scott Lynch, I decided it was…

ULLA!
And so, September is upon us and there is STUFF! that I am doing. First up is the fabulous Gollancz Festival  which once again sees this mighty award nominated event invade a big ol’ bookshop to fill it with AWESOME!
This year, Gollanczfest is taking place on 17th and 18th Sept at Foyles Bookshop, Charing Cross Road, London, and The Pheonix Artist Club. I’ll be joining an all singing and dancing cast of authors to entertain you. Yes YOU!
You can find the entire lowdown by clicking right...HERE! but this is what little ol’ me is doing on the Saturday:
The Writer's Day - Morning
Saturday 17th September 2016 10am – 1pm
The Phoenix Artist Club, 1 Phoenix St, London WC2H 8BU
Join science fiction and fantasy publisher Gollancz, in the cosy Phoenix Artist Club (just across the road from Foyles, Charing Cross Road) for a morning of workshops and talks focused on the mechanics and skills needed by the modern writer.
The session includes a fascinating insight into the life of the agent from top literary agent, Juliet Mushens, a speed-workshopping session where small groups of attendees will benefit from a series of 15 minute sessions with different authors to discuss the business of being a writer; and a panel discussion on expanded universes, forgotten realms and future histories. The session will run from 10:00 until 1pm, and will be followed by a signing. Space is very limited!
Authors in attendance include Ben Aaronovitch, Ezekiel Boone, Edward Cox, Stephen Deas, Joanne Harris, Alex Lamb, Tom Lloyd, Miles Cameron, Simon Morden, Christopher Priest, Al Robertson and Jon Wallace.
Now that’s SAUCY! And then in the afternoon I’ll be on a panel with the cool kids:
Panel 4. Does Anyone Need a Wee?
Ben Aaronovitch, Ed Cox, Joanne Harris and Scott Lynch will be discussing the logistics in fantasy.
And lastly, on the Sunday, there’ll be a series of author ‘in conversation’ panels. I’m very happy and excited to say that I’ll be in conversation with one of my favourite people and writers:
Sunday 18th September 2016 10am – 1pm
Come and join esteemed science fiction and fantasy publisher Gollancz for a morning of insightful and engaging discussions between authors. This ticket grants all holders access to four morning discussions in the Foyles auditorium including:
Panel 1. Joe Abercrombie, Tom Lloyd and Scott Lynch in conversation
Panel 2. Ben Aaronovitch in conversation with Elizabeth Bear
Panel 3. Stephen Baxter in conversation with Alastair Reynolds
Panel 4. Joanne Harris in conversation with Ed Cox
There are other events that I’m attending in September, but I’ll blog more about those later. For now, this is all about Gollanczfest. It really is an inclusive celebration of readers, writers, editors and bookshops and Sci-Fi and Fantasy, and has so much goodness that I can barely contain myself! So, if you’re like me and can’t wait, click HERE for a reminder of what Gollanczfest all about.
See you on the 17th!

Happy Friday! I can’t believe that we’re nearly at the end of October. Halloween is coming up, I’ve got bookish plans for the weekend, and I’ve been reading up a storm! This week, I’ve managed to read the same number of books as I did in the month of September. Crazy, huh?
Sci-fi and fantasy haven’t been on the agenda much, but I’ve been tearing through some great books anyway.
  Books I read
One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus
Thornhill by Pam Smy
The ABC Murders by Agatha Christie
Binti by Nnedi Okorafor
The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie Rubenhold
I read five books this week, two of which were audiobooks (I’ve gone a little audiobook mad this month). I enjoyed all of these books, but the strongest was definitely The Five, while the weakest was The ABC Murders. I’m a little behind on reviews (what else is new?) but you’ll see reviews of all these books soon!
  Books I bought
War Girls by Tochi Onyebuchi
Binti: The Complete Trilogy by Nnedi Okorafor
A Song for a New Day by Sarah Pinsker
The Thing Itself by Adam Roberts
We Are the Dead by Mike Shackle
You know, I was doing so well with not buying books. I hadn’t bought anything in about a month when suddenly, GollanczFest happened. This was an event held by the publisher at Foyles and various authors did panels and talked about their books and writing experiences. Foyles also happens to be close to Forbidden Planet, so that happened too.
Oops.
  Book post
Realm of Ash by Tasha Suri
The Pursuit of William Abbey by Claire North
The Unspoken Name by A. K. Larkwood
Warrior of the Altaii by Robert Jordan
The Infinite Noise by Lauren Shippen
Gamechanger by L. X. Bennett
The book post gods have smiled upon me this week! I was fortunate enough to receive some amazing packages from Orbit and Tor Books! The books I’m most excited for are Realm of Ash (I may have shrieked when I opened it) and Warrior of the Altaii! I also cannot wait to read The Unspoken Name, which I requested. The others arrived unsolicited and I am looking forward to learning more about them!

That’s it for this week, folks! What did you get up to this week? Read anything good? Get any new books? Let me know!
Blasting through books (thank you, Audible). Weekly Wrap-Up: 25 October 2019 #bookblogger Happy Friday! I can’t believe that we’re nearly at the end of October. Halloween is coming up, I’ve got bookish plans for the weekend, and I’ve been reading up a storm!

A moment
A moment at the train station. A random musing.
I’m not entirely sure where this exact moment fits, but it’s one that I don’t want to lose in the hurly-burly of life. Regular book-related shenanigans will recommence shortly. I was heading back from GollanczFest at the weekend, and for reasons best known to the train operators, my train went from St Pancras rather than King’s Cross. I found myself with some time to kill, so was wandering…
