Chapter 11-- chapter 13
When taken back into the blimp with the remaining contestants, you’re told to just rest up until the next part of the exam comes in. With that you walk around and explore around until you catch the two young ones, Killua and Gon. You watch as they joke around and sit next to one another, looking out the window before them. Listening to their conversation and when Killua tells Gon that his parents are assassins and the destiny that was mapped out for him. You could see the look of shock and confusion over take young Gon when Killua describes wanting to get rid of his parents.. Hearing Killua speak so enthusiastically about the bounty the world might have on his parents.
Oh how you remember your own thoughts of your parents when you were his age, Oh how you wanted to get rid of them yourself. Sometimes it was all you could dream about. As always your thoughts come to a stop when you feel a presence behind you, though they tried to conceal it, you can already tell the familiar Aura behind you.
“ Hello Gittarackur.”
“Hello.”
You turn around to face the pierced man with not much of a smile to give, “ Stalking me i see.”
As always he is a man with few words, not much to share or say, but will always provide you with his presence. You turn back to face the two boys and that’s when you sense another person in the room, the chairman… What does he want with them? Slowly you pull out your small hair pin, in case you must attack the chairman, wanting to make sure Killua and his friend that he has made are safe at all costs. But to your surprise the chairman invites them to a game and if they win, they’ll be hunters on the spot. With that the boys walk away with him getting ready to play.
“ Why do you wish to protect those boys?” Gittarackur speaks from behind you.
“ It’s none of your business.” you glare at the man and begin to walk away, but he follows right behind you.
“ But I can tell, you would give up your spot if it meant protecting them, foolish of you. If they cannot fight for themselves they aren't worth saving.”
“ don’t tell me you're threatened by those two.”
“ Not at the very least.”
I laugh at his response and walk to your sleeping area, you notice that many men sit around the floor and look at the both of you in what looks like possible fear.
“ All of you get up and leave.” I command them, but they all look at you as if you’re joking. With a small huff I pull out your pin once again and just before you're gonna aim for someone, Gittarackur stops you.
I look at Gittarackur as to why he stopped you, but he had already pulled out his own needle and aimed it at all of the individuals in the room.
“ Leave the room now and don’t come back.” he instructs in a very firm tone. A tone I’m all too familiar with..
“ I could have done it myself.”
“ I’m Well aware Noa.”
“ Then you should have let me.”
“ I wouldn’t have been a gentleman.”
I let out a scoff at that comment and make your way to one end of the room and sit down. And begin removing all the pins from my hair. And massage any parts of my body that ache.
“ So Gittarackur, do tell me, do your needles change your appearance?”
“ No.”
“ Lies,
“ Maybe so, maybe not.”
“ So tell me Gittarackur, what is it that you do for a living, or why do you need a hunter's license?”
“ For work.”
“What work is that?”
“ None of your business”
“ But here’s the thing Gittarackur, you’re in my presence so I’ll ask again, what work is that?”
“ a mission.”
“ Gittarackur save you and I both the trouble and elaborate before I make you against your will. I look at him like im giving him a warning, and then turn back to examining my nails. Hmm they need some filing.
“ I’m what one would consider an assassin.”
“Hm really? I haven't seen your work, you must suck at it then.”
“ No, I just don't leave a mess behind.”
“Who said i leave a mess behind?”
“ Considering you and Hisoka get along rather well, it says alot about your style i suppose.”
“ He is an interesting one, but you’re friends with him, thus the same conclusion can be said about you.”
“ I don’t like any types of mess.”
“ i know you don’t.”
“ What?”
“ nothing Gittarackur, we should get some sleep.”
I go ahead and stretch my body before laying on my back and shutting my eyes in hopes to get some rest. But I don't hear Gittarackur shift or make a single sound.
“ Gittarackur you should rest, you’ll need it.”
“I don’t need it.”
“ We all need it, just because you were trained to not need it as often, doesn't mean your body doesn't require it. Now don’t be stupid and get some rest, besides if you’re really an assassin you would have been trained on the tunnel sound, you do know what that is right?”
With that Gittarackur huffs, “ Yes I know what that is, I just like to be alert.”
“ Just say you suck at the basic skills of assassination, obviously you haven't mastered that skill.”
“ I wouldn’t speak of things you don’t know about.”
“ Well Gittarackur, I know a lot more than you think. So keep your advice for yourself and don't speak of things that you yourself don’t know about.”
With that i listen for Gittarackur to speak another word, but he doesn’t as usual. You lay in complete silence and feel as the atmosphere becomes ever so familiar. So tense, yet so calm.. So strong, yet comforting. You know this Aura, you know it all too well.. It was sometimes the only aura that would calm you. Like the arms you can be held in, the hands that would move through your hair. You knew it all too well.
I slowly begin to even out my breath and heart beat until I know that Gittarackur will think I'm sleeping. It was when I heard the slight sound of something. Though to most people they wouldn’t have heard it, I can hear the  sound of a needle being dislodged from the skin. That was when I heard a small hum of satisfaction, and a few pops of one’s neck.. And a silent whisper of “ killua you’re such a pain.”
That was all I needed to know, to know that the Aura, the needles and way of speaking was that of the one I knew the most. With a small smile to myself, and decide that it’s time to have a little fun.
“ Gittarackur” I speak out, knowing i did startle him as i hear him jab the needle right back to it’s old spot.
“ Why are you up!” he speaks up.
“ I heard Hisoka in the distance, he’s about to come in.”
“ I didn’t hear anything, what games are you playing at?”
“ I’m not playing any games, I hear his heart rhythm in the distance… just like i hear yours… and just like i heard you pull that needle out, i heard it. Thus you lied and i was right. It does change your appearance.”
“Go to bed.”
“ So tell me, do you change the way you look because you’re just terrible to look at, thus this look is better than how you actually look like..  Or are you spying on someone?”
“ What are you getting at? Just spit it out.” he huffs
“I’m just saying Gittarackur, that you’re a mystery to me is all. And don’t worry, i didn’t see how you look. I respect you enough to give you your privacy… But you can tell me.. Are you hideous too look like without your disguise?”
“ I said go to bed.” He instructs me
“Fine.” i bite back
“ Good”
“Good”
“ Goodnight.”
“Goodnight Gittarackur.”

Roommates
Illumi/Gittarackur x Reader
Hisoka x Reader platonic
~•~•~•~•~•~•~••~•~•~•~•~
Third POV
You had met Hisoka at the last Hunter exam. You didn't pass that year and blame him partially. You called him out on his psycho behavior pretending to be an examiner since he kept killing fellow participants. The two of you got in a fight, and then....you were both disqualified. Ever since then he had some how grew fond of you, something about "finding another equal" whatever that meant. You couldn't complain though, being his friend wasn't all that bad and it helped to have a strong ally even if he was peculiar.
You arrived to the waiting area for the first phase and searched for Hisoka immediately, he informed you that he would be here again as you were traveling over. You quickly found him, I mean he stuck out like a sore thumb with his vibrant hair. "Hisoka!" you waved at him to get his attention from across the room. Some people stared but you didn't mind, although there was one even more peculiar looking guy standing next to him who was looking between you two. He was the same height as Hisoka but had spiked purple hair in a Mohawk style but also partially bald on the sides. He wore an array of green and had yellow pins sticking out of his chest and long slender face. You grimaced at the sight of the pins but made your way over. As you approached Hisoka smirked at both of you. "Who's your new buddy?" You asked him prompting him to introduce you.
The man reached his hand out to shake your hand in a shaken and rustic motion, like he was a tin man needing oil. "I'm Ill-Gittarackur" you were confused by the change in wording but brushed it off because his voice was also very strange, it was very shaken and almost robotic.
"Nice to meet you Gittarackur. My name is [Y/N]" you smiled brightly at him despite Hisoka giggling at the interaction.
~~~~~~~~~~~
The first phase started and you all went your separate ways. In fact you all decided to keep your distance from one another for majority of the game, until the trick tower.
You all had finished so early, Hisoka first, then Gittarackur, then yourself. When you had finished you saw them playing cards together, so you obviously sat down and joined them to kill time.
"Agh I can't do this anymore" you said frustrated throwing your cards in the air. The whole 70 plus hours to complete the trick tower was agony for you considering it took you about 10 hours at most.
"Why don't we play a different game?" Hisoka suggested creepily.
You thought about it for a moment "Depends on the game.." you said hesitantly.
Hisoka suggested a harmless game of truth or dare. You played rock paper scissors to decide you would go first. Since you won you prompted Hisoka, "Truth or Dare" you asked him.
"Dare of course" you racked your brain for an adequate dare for him....
"I dare you to restrain your bloodlust next phase when you peak" he glared at you as you smirked. You did NOT want a repeat of last year and this was the best way to ensure that didn't happen.
"Fine" he said begrudgingly "but only for an hour tops"
"Deal" you said as the two of you shook on it, "your turn" you prompted for Hisoka to ask someone else truth or dare.
He picked Gittarackur. He hesitated a bit in his answer but ended up picking truth. It seemed like Hisoka had already had a question in mind because he prompted Gittarackur immediately "What do you think of [Y/N]?"
You were a bit taken aback by his question for Gittarackur. I mean the two of you had just met?
"I...think....she's....intriguing..and...
quite....attractive" the words were broken but you could still sense the shyness behind them. You blushed a bit but quickly shook it off.
"Well ahem-" you coughed awkwardly as you stood up to walk away "this was fun but I'm going to go see what that ninja dude and other contestants are up too, see if they're a threat"
You quickly made your exit unsure of what to make of the situation 'So much for a harmless game...that was interesting' you thought to yourself
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was finally the end of the third phase. So long Trick Tower!!
You all were taken to an all old stationed ship. The two I front of you wre an older woman and an older man, they looked like grandparents. Apparently the Hunter Association was giving us 3 days to rest before the next phase officially started. 'Suspicious' you thought.
They said that they ran a hotel and thrift store. Since their hotel rooms were astronomically expensive they prompted contestants to trade treasure for their room instead of money. So, monkey do as monkey told-we all spent the day scavenging for some type of treasure in the surrounding ocean filled with sunken ships.
Majority of the contestants traded for a room no problem, well almost no problem.....they forced everyone to share rooms.
"Please I'm begging you I can't sleep in this room" you tried asking the old lady manager of the hotel to switch your room but she refused.
"I'm sorry there's nothing I can do maybe you can switch with someone else?" She suggested sweetly but useless for you.
You groaned and were ready to start cussing out an old lady when Tonpa walked by "I'll switch with you!" He said eagerly. You were about to to question him since you weren't necessarily fond of Tonpa the Rookie Crusher, but decided you'd take your chances.
"Deal" you exchanged keys and immediately headed for your new room.
Once at the door you realized that his roommate could've been much worse than yours....but then again what's worse than snakes? You held your breath as you unlocked the door hoping to find a normal roommate on the other side. To your surprised it was Gittarackur.
You sighed in relief although Gittarackur looked at you with a confused look. "What happened to the chubby man?" He asked.
"I'm guessing the needles got to him" you laughed, pointing at your face in reference to the pins sticking out of his. "I switched with him because my roommate filled the room with snakes. And I do not do snakes. Im glad you're my new roommate though!"
There was a semi-uncomfortable silence between you two upon noticing that there was only one bed in the room despite the two of you being assigned to it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As the sun set the two of you got ready for bed. Your routine was normal...Gittarackur on the other hand was odd. You didn't mean to see what you did, but the door was open slightly so you couldn't help but peak in.
While in the bathroom preparing for bed Gittarackur had taken the pins out of his face. The pins must've morphed his face because without them....well he was kind of beautiful. His face was much more petite and paler in color too, his eyes dark and sunken. Most different was his hair, that atrocious hair style turned into beautiful long black hair that seemed silky and soft to touch. You didn't even notice you were staring so intently until you accidentally dropped your brush 'shit' you thought to yourself.
Gittarackur immediately turned his head towards you "Shit" he said out loud.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Gittarackur or Illumi, as you've found out explained everything to you. He was there under cover to monitor and prevent someone from becoming a Hunter.
"I'm guessing that someone is your little brother, Killua is it?" You asked nonchalantly as he looked at you a bit surprised "It doesn't take a genius to know you're related, you're a family of famous assassins"
"Well yes....but you can't tell anyone, only Hisoka knows" you hummed in response.
"Fine with me, I won't get in your way"
There was another silence between the two of you, although this time it wasn't as awkward as before. "So tell me froggy did you really meant what you said earlier?"
"Froggy?" He asked confused again
"Yeah froggy, you were a little sore on the eyes but now you're transformed into your normal Prince looking self. Froggy"
He laughed at your comparison "So what I'm hearing if you think I'm a handsome Prince"
You grew a little embarrassed with a light dust of pink of your cheeks "Hey I asked you a question first"
"You mean when I said your were intriguing and attractive and you walked away? Yes, I did"
You smiled at him sheepishly, "yeah that, I'm sorry about that. To be honest I still wasn't really sure about how I felt about you, but now I think I understand you better. At least I know the real you now"
He nodded, understanding your point of view.
~~~~~~~~~~
The two of you stayed up late enjoying each others company and continued talking about yourself and really everything you could think of.
It was a mix of you enjoying the conversation and trying to prolong the inevitable.....sharing the bed. But it was past 3am and you both needed the rest wether you liked it or not.
"Okay, so I guess I'll take the right side and you take the left?" You prompted trying to rip off the metaphorical band-aid.
"Are you sure you wouldn't be more comfortable if I slept on the floor?" Illumi asked softly
"No no" you insisted "I can't let you do that, this place is old and disgusting"
After a bit more insisting you both climbed into the bed making sure there was a significant gap between you two as you both layed in the bed face up on your backs.
"Well goodnight!" You said a bit loudly as you turned over to face away from him.
'Just sleep [Y/N] sleep. Don't think about his froggy Prince face being on the pillow beside you'
~~~~~~~~~
Illumi POV
[Y/N] fell asleep rather quickly, she must've been really tired despite acting like she didn't need the rest. Since I'm a trained assassin I wasn't really tired so I instead just watched her as she peacefully slept.
'She's so pretty. If I'm a frog, does that make her the princess?'
She turned in her sleep to face me, our faces now inches apart. I studied her face like it would be a test in the next phase. Her eyelashes long yet dainty. Her [H/C] hair that perfectly fell around her face and onto the pillow. Her skin that looked clear like glass yet soft like a cloud.
"Take a picture it will last longer" a voice disrupted my fantasy. Hisoka.
"What are you doing here?" I snapped a bit at him for invading my privacy, our privacy.
"Relax relax I'm just checking on how my match is working" Of course he prompted this somehow, Hisoka loved to play many roles: pervert, examiner, now match maker.
"Get out" I said in a deadpanned tone. Luckily he obliged and left out the window from where he most likely snuck in.
I thought about getting up to lock the window to prevent having another unwelcome visit, but [Y/N] moved again in her sleep. Only this time she wrapped her arms around my torso and rested her head on my chest
'Well now I'm stuck here'
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Original POV
The next morning you found yourself sleeping on a much more comfort pillow than the night before. 'Is this pillow moving' you asked yourself 'shit'
You lifted up your head to find yourself snuggling Illumi who was looking at you softly. "Good morning" he said.
"Shit I'm so sorry-" you started to apologize and move off him but he wrapped his arm around you forcing you to stay.
"Don't be, I didn't mind" he rested his hand on your head and started playing with your hair slightly, calling you down.
"Illumi" you said softly wanting, needing to close the gap between you. You looked down at his lips, and he did the same. Your eyes both flickered closed as the gap grew smaller and smaller. When...SNAP - FLASH.
The two of you jumped apart immediately startled by the intrusion.
Hisoka had somehow managed to make his way back into your room. "Hisoka what the hell?!" You yelled at him while throwing your pillow at him.
Of course he dodged it with ease, "you'll thank me later" he said holding up the now printed Polaroid of the two one you almost kissing.
"You little shit!" You immediately jumped out of the bed and began chasing him out of the room and into to the hallway.
Before you fully chased him through the door you ran back to the end of the bed "We are not done here," you looked at Illumi still shocked in the bed "I will be back to continue this" you finished before running back out to the hall yelling for Hisoka.
Illumi sat in bed still processing the chain of events as you ran after the mischievous clown
Illumi x Reader x ??????
Part 12
part 11
part 13
warning: illumi is a LITTLE mean, mostly because he’s trying to push his feelings for you away!! Also slightly suggestive, mention of panty stealing, Leorio is a pervert(as per usual)
Tumblr media
“I’ll teach you, for a price.”
(Name) raises an eyebrow at the man in front of her, who she knows as Gittarackur, but is actually the disguised Illumi.
“Yeah, and what you want as payment?”
The man lifts a hand to stroke his chin. “Two options.”
(Name) leaned against the tree, waiting for him to continue.
“You can pay me back with your… body.”
She jumped, her face heating up. “W-what? My-“
He raised a hand to stop her, shaking his head. “Not in that way. You will owe me a favor, which I may need your future skill to complete.”
She relaxed a bit, sliding down to sit on the ground. “Okay. And the other option?”
He smiled, crouching down in front of her to pull out a picture, one that she had dropped.
“You tell me who the people in this picture are.”
Her eyes widened, and she reached out to snatch the picture back, a hint of anger in her eyes. “Give that back.”
He shook his finger, tutting softly. “Not until your training is over.”
She grabbed his arm, her eyes wide. “That picture is very important to me, please give it back!”
Illumi paused, not liking the shaking that had entered her voice. Was she about to cry? And why was he getting anxious at the thought of her tears.
“…”
He scoffed and let the picture drop to the ground, seeing her snatch it away and hold it to her chest before he turned away, a frown on his face.
“… it’s a picture of me and someone I care about. I don’t remember much about him, but I wanna see him again someday.”
She brings the picture to her lips to kiss the boys face, smiling at his blurred features. Illumi stiffens at this.
“You really care about that person, huh?”
She nods. “He was my first real friend. I hope he’s doing okay, I know he had a rough life, but he’s strong. And was really cute!”
She giggled to herself, stuffing the picture into her bag. Illumi was glad that he was facing the other way, or she would see his disguise trembling, a blush erupting on his cheeks.
“… I’m sure he’s fine. Probably misses you too.”
He calmed himself before turning and offered her his hand.
“Tonight will be your only rest time, so find somewhere to sleep. We’ll start your training in the morning.”
And with that, he was gone. The only thing he left behind was a nostalgic girl that he now knew to be his childhood friend.
When he was far enough away, Illumi’s disguise completely came undone, and the long haired man could only hold his chest as his heart threatened to break through his ribs.
She missed him. Him! She had held onto that picture for over 10 years, searching for HIM! He let out a shaky breath, using a nearby tree to support himself.
“Look what you do to me, (Name). Can’t even stand up straight…”
He calmed down just enough to remember her words more clearly. She had mentioned that she didn’t rennet much about him. Was that just her memory being shoddy, or amnesia? Questions for later, right now he could barely think about her without melting.
“My, my, seems you got the conformation you needed.”
Hisoka shuffled his cards, not even glancing up to look at Illumi’s flushed expression. He could tell by Illumi’s aura that he was beyond flustered, and was there to revel in this new side of him.
“Yes… she is the girl from my childhood. A person that was very important to me…”
Hisoka glanced up, a smirk pulling at his lips. “Was?”
Illumi nodded, folding his arms across his broad chest, steadying his breathing. “Was. I won’t have myself falling for her all over again. The first time it was… agonizing when I realized she was gone. Plus I’m way too busy to play around, I’m not a child anymore.”
Hisoka hummed. ‘Oh poor ‘Lumi, doesn’t even understand he’s still in love with her. Oh well, just makes it more interesting for me.’
“So, what do you plan on doing with her then? You’re going to teach her to be a hunter, correct?”
The black haired assassin mulled over this, brushing his hair to the side.
“Yes. I can sense potential in her. I may…”
A small smile spread across his lips, a smile devoid of good intentions.
“… borrow her after the exam.”
——————
(Name) did her best to create a rudimentary shelter before the sun dipped below the trees. When she finished, she crawled in and lied down, using a pile of leaves as her pillow.
She thought back to earlier, gripping her photo so tight it wrinkled.
‘How did he get this? I’ll have to be much more careful in the future. Someone could use this picture to hurt my old friend…’
She curled up, her eyelids growing heavier by the second.
“Goodnight Gon, Killua, Kurapika, Leorio, and Gittarackur. Wherever you are…”
——————
(Name) awoke when the feeling of water surrounded her, she tried to breath, but stopped when her mouth filled with liquid.
She breached the surface of the water, gasping for breath. (Name) took a moment to breath before she checked her surroundings, seeing Illumi standing on the bank of the stream she had been tossed in. He had an amused smirk on his lips.
“I came to wake you up and you didn’t budge. I pulled you out of your mediocre shelter, nothing. If I can carry you to a stream and toss you into water before you wake up…”
He grabs her sleeve, pulling her up onto the bank with ease.
“We have a problem.”
(Name) pushed him away, coughing up water. She gestured to her soaked clothes, her brows furrowing.
“Okay, cool, but now my clothes are absolutely soaked. What am I supposed to do?”
He shrugged, looking her up and down. “You could just train in your underwear. Don’t worry, I’m not attracted to girls like you.”
He winced at his own comment, but she didn’t seem to care.
“Huh, okay then.” She scoffed and pulled at the hem of her shirt, just enough to expose her pink bra.
He jumped back, his head turning to look in the opposite direction quicker than he would have liked.
“Vulgar girl, I would’ve hoped you’d change in privacy, considering you have an extra set of clothes.”
He tried to ignore the urge to look, biting his lip. She just huffed, throwing her shirt on the ground and waking past him to her shelter.
“You’re blushing an awful lot for someone that ain’t attracted to girl like me, Gittarackur.”
He growled, folding his arms as he waited for her to change.
“Anyone would blush when a woman starts disrobing in front of them. You feel comfortable getting naked in front of men?”
She laughed, exiting her shelter wearing her shorts from the first day and a sports bra. He could feel his pants tighten at the sight, telling himself he’d address THAT later.
“No, only the men I’m not attracted to.”
She stuck her tongue out at him, stretching out her legs.
“Let’s get started, yeah?”
——————
Illumi’s training was tough, partly because training to be a hunter was tough, but also because he wanted to let out a bit of pent up energy.
He was no stranger to seeing half naked women, often being an assassin meant women trying to seduce you into not killing them. This never worked, as Illumi didn’t have much of a libido.
(Name), however, was testing his patience.
The way she bent to watch the fish be picked up by birds and practiced catching them by jumping into the air, causing her breasts to bounce was driving Illumi crazy. She seemed almost unaware of her effect on him, leaning against him during her breaks to offer him food or a drink.
Her scent mixed with the sweat of her hard work was mind numbing. He wondered how he was able to keep himself in check when she loosely lifted the hem of her bra to complain about the heat, fanning herself.
“I’m heading out. Keep practicing, watch how the bird waits to catch the fish and practice the moves I taught you.”
He runs off, hissing at the hardness between his legs.
(Name) watches him go, a bit confused at his hasty departure. “Alright, see you tomorrow.”
——————
By the time Illumi arrived to wake (Name) up, she had already rose and gotten dressed, this time in a t-shirt and shorts. Illumi sighed in relief, glad he wouldn’t have to deal with his “little problem” again after their session.
He would have stayed relieved if he didn’t see her clothes from the last day drying on a string next to her shelter, including a pair of panties with a strawberry pattern.
“(Name).”
He gripped her shoulder, staring down at her intensely. She just lifted an eyebrow. “Yes?”
“Why… why are you drying your underwear out in plain view?”
(Name) just shrugged, pushing his hand off her shoulder. “Why not? I need clothes to wear, since YOU got them all soaked yesterday.”
His eye twitched. She wasn’t exactly wrong but…
“There are dangerous men taking this exam, (Name). I seem to remember you saying that Hisoka would be into strange things. What do you think his reaction would be, seeing your little strawberry panties waving in the wind?”
(Name) blinked, then covered her mouth.
“Oh god, he would get WAY too excited. Do you think he’d steal them? They’re my favorite pair!!”
Illumi glared at the girl, raising a hand to rub his temple. “Men are capable of much more than stealing your underwear, girl.”
She tilted her head at this. “Capable of what exactly?”
He dropped his hand, sliding it to her chin.
“Want me to show you?”
“…”
“…”
“…”
Illumi pulled his hand away, covering his lower face to hide his blush. He was losing control, the power this girl held over him was concerning. He could feel himself throbbing at the thought of touching her, kissing her, bending her over and-
“Are you done being creepy and ready to see my progress?”
She tapped her foot impatiently, a light blush also apparent on her cheeks. He cleared his throat and nodded.
“Yes. Go ahead.”
—————
It took (Name) two days to master the act of hunting, which impressed Illumi immensely. She was proud of herself, jumping up and down excitedly.
“Ahh, thank you for training me Gittarackur!”
Illumi tensed at her arms wrapping around him, giving him a tight squeeze. He wanted to pull away, but his arms hound themselves wrapped around her waste, his head lowering to smell her hair.
“You’re welcome. I have no other reason to be here, so I just leave. I still have to k- find my target.”
He retracted his arms and pushed her off, earning a huff in return. Illumi held back a chuckle.
“You helped me before even you found your target? You’re such a nice guy!”
Illumi paused, turning quickly to grab her by the shoulders.
“You have no idea the kind of man I am. Don’t trust people so willingly, (Name). You’ll only get hurt.”
He squeezed her shoulders before he let go and scurried away. She frowned and yelled after him.
“A BAD MAN WOULDN’T BE SO GENTLE, GITTARACKUR!”
Illumi ignored her, speeding up.
—————
(Name) left her temporary home to explore, having a bit more confidence in her abilities. Illumi had sparred with her relentlessly, and she rubbed her bruised bottom. He’d sent her falling onto her butt so many times you would of though she’d broke her tailbone.
“Man, where is everyone hiding?”
(Name) perked up when she heard Illumi’s voice in the distance, immediately following it.
“I haven’t seen anyone for the past two days.”
(Name) appeared, waving excitedly.
“Leorio, I’m so glad to see you!”
She jumped into his arms, squeezing him tightly. He gasped, his hands hovering around her hips.
“Oh, (Name), you scared me! How you’ve been holding up?”
“Meh, okay I guess. One of the applicants trained me in the “art of hunting.” He’s moody, but I think he’s actually a nice guy under all that doom and gloom!”
Leorio relaxes, his hands finally resting on her hips. “He? (Name) be careful, men don’t just help a girl for no reason.”
“But you and Kurapika have helped me plenty, and I know you two don’t have any ulterior motives… unless…”
She playfully hit his shoulder. “You’ve been using me for my canteen haven’t you?”
He sighed, playing along by holding up his hands in defeat. “You got me. This has all been an elaborate plan to steal your pink water canteen.”
They looked at each other for a moment before bursting into laughter. (Name) pinched his cheek, her eyes sparkling.
“See, now that wasn’t so hard to admit, huh?”
The moment was ruined when the bush next to them rattled. Leorio stood, pushing (Name) behind him and wielding his knife. She pulled out her own dagger, her eyebrows furrowed.
“Who goes there?”
“Oh, hold on!”
Tonpa left the bush, holding his hands up to show he wasn’t armed. (Name) frowned, folding her arms across her chest.
“It’s just me!”
“Tonpa! Don’t tell me your target is…”
Leorio and (Name) tensed, pointing their weapons at him.
“Hey, wait a second! Just calm down you two! Neither of you are my target.”
“Prove it.”
Tonpa reached into his back pocket, pulling out a card with the number 191 on it. The two relaxed.
“Good think I didn’t throw it away. Fighting people who aren’t my target is a waste of time and energy.”
(Name) looped her arm around Leorio’s, glaring at the man. Tonpa caught this and began to back up, pointing at her.
“Wait don’t tell me that I’m your target?!”
“Unfortunately you’re not.” Leorio replied. (Name) shook her head to signal he wasn’t her target either. Leorio held up the card that held the number of his target.
“Number 246. Ponzu, huh?”
“Huh? You know who this is?”
“You didn’t already know?”
(Name) giggled, poking Leorio’s cheek. “You shouldn’t let him know he has an advantage over you, Leorio.”
“Uh, er, well… I wouldn’t put it that way. I just didn’t have a chance to find out…”
Tonpa grinned. “Heh. Want me to fill you in?”
“What?”
“Your target’s appearance, weapons, special abilities, and weaknesses.”
Leorio let him continue, thinking it over.
“I have one condition.”
The two were surprised to hear a wet gurgling sound come from Tonpa’s stomach. (Name) made a disgusted face, stepping back.
“I think I ate some bad fruit.”
“Bad fruit…”
“To be honest, I can barely stand… you want to become a doctor right? Do you have any medicine one you?”
He groaned, holding his stomach as he trembled. (Name) gagged, retreating behind Leorio. He approached Tonpa, holding out his briefcase.
“Wait, don’t soil yourself. I have all kinds of anti-diarrheal and stomach medicine.”
“Oh, thank you so much!”
Tonpa reached out for the briefcase, his hands brushing against it. Leorio pulled it back, scowling.
“First tell me what you know.”
“F-fine.”
(Name) didn’t pay much attention to their conversation, only picking up that the woman she’d met before was named Ponzu.
Leorio instructed Tonpa to step back before he opened his briefcase, which he did quickly.
As soon as the briefcase clicked open, someone descended from the trees and attempted to wack Leorio in the head with a large stick. He barely dodged, the contents of his bag spilling out…
Including his badge number!
“Leorio!”
(Name) launched forward, but before she could grab the badge it was stolen by a monkey. (Name) was so surprised by the monkey that she fell backwards into Leorio.
The two hurriedly stood, (Name) embarrassed apologizing as they did. Leorio paid her no mind, his anger increasing by the second.
“You two are working together!?”
“Exactly so. I didn’t need your medicine. I have my own, and I might as well confess that you actually are my target.”
Tonpa swallowed his medicine, a cocky smile on his face.
“What about the card you just showed me?”
“That’s my target.”
The man with the monkey waved, winking in (Name)’s direction. “This is tonpas, we switched cards. And these…”
He reached into his pocket, pulling out a pair of strawberry panties.
“Are yours, right?”
(Name)’s face erupted in a combination of embarrassment and anger. “Hey, those are my favorite pair!”
Leorio just gawked at the man, his jaw nearly hitting the ground.
“Can I uh… have th-“
(Name) elbowed him in the stomach, and he shut up.
“There you have it!”
He laughed, which only enraged Leorio further.
“Damn you! I’ll make you pay!!”
“Uh-oh!”
He began to chase Tonpa. (Name) glanced between tonpa and the man with the monkey, deciding to follow after Leorio.
“Hold up, I’m gonna kill you!”
“Hey now, I’m not the one with your tag and her underwear!”
“Shut up!”
Tonpa laughed, keeping a good distance between them. “You still haven’t learned your lesson, rookie? It’s your own fault for letting us trick you! Besides, working in teams during the Hunter Exam is common sense!”
“I agree with the latter, but I cannot accept the former.”
Kurapika appears on the path. Tonpa doesn’t have time to stop at the pace he was going, and Kurapika kicks him.
“You shouldn’t be tricking people, in the first place!”
“Kurapika!”
(Name) embraced him, her eyes welling up with tears. She couldn’t get any words out, just blubbers. He pats her head, and looks to Leorio.
“You two wanna team up?”
—————
“Oh dear.”
Kurapika holds a hand over his mouth as they explain their situation. His cheeks flush when (Name) tells him what happened with her.
“What degenerates. How did they even get them? Are you…”
He barely stops himself from asking if they had been taken straight off of her. She was wearing shorts after all, that would be near impossible.
“Probably stole them while I was hanging them out to dry. My favorite pair, with the cute strawberries!”
She started to cry again, shaking Leorio. “What if they get away and keep them?! What am I supposed to do without my lucky pair!! Ugh Gittarackur was right!”
The two exchanged a look. “We’ll get your uh.. undergarments back, (Name).”
Leorio ruffles her hair, which calms her a little.
——————
(Name) waits at an old log, kicking her feet. The two had promised to retrieve her underwear, and she promised to cook dinner.
The two returned an hour later, Leorio with his tag in one hand, and her neatly folded panties in the other. Kurapika was polite enough to not look, instead turning his head when Leorio offered her the pair of panties.
“Oh thank you so much! Ah, my favorite pair!”
She held them up, spinning in a circle before stuffing them into her bag. “I’ve gotta out these on later. Guess they’re only safe when they’re on my-“
“Ahem! Anyways…”
Kurapika stopped her mid sentence, avoiding her gaze. “We have the tags for #16 and #118 as well.”
“So Kurapika, Tonpa was your target? You saved me back there!”
“No need to thank me. I didn’t want Tonpa to notice me, so I stayed hidden while you were jumped from behind. Well that was because there’d be no point teaming up with you if you couldn’t withstand that attack. I suppose that you barely qualified.”
“You really are full of yourself…”
(Name) pointed to herself. “Did I qualify?”
Kurapika smiled, shaking his head. “I didn’t need to test you, I already planned on teaming up with you from the beginning.”
Leorio frowned and (Name) gasped, pulling Kurapika into a hug and ruffling his hair.
“Aren’t you a little charmer?”
“He’s rude that’s what he is!”
Leorio huffed. “Well, I can’t deny that it’s easier to work as a team. Let’s stick together for the remaining four days.”
(Name) released the now flustered Kurapika, putting her hands on her hips.
“Yeah, let’s.”
The three chatted for a bit, discussing their targets and the tags they now had.
“Wait, (Name), who’s your target?”
Leorio glanced at her, only slightly suspicious. She sighed and reached into her shirt, pulling the blank card out to show them.
“I have no target, and I’m not being hunted. I’m the one who drew the blank card.”
—————
Illumi had been watching over the interaction from a distance. Once (Name) had gotten her stolen underwear back, he left.
He didn’t like that another man had held her panties in his hands, but there wasn’t much her could do about it… yet. It was almost night time and he had long since gravely wounded his target, only needing to capture his tag.
Illumi took one last look at (Name) before he was gone.
————
The group of three traverse through the forest, (Name) stopping to pick up herbs and mushrooms she’d need to make dinner.
They all slide down a cliff, (Name) complaining about their nonchalant behavior.
“Do all boys just enjoy getting dirty? I just washed these.”
She groaned, dusting the dirt off of the back of her shorts.
“You can just wash them again later. You can wear my tunic if you need to.” Kurapika offered like the gentleman he was.
“Thanks, but that would barely cover me. I’m not exactly the smallest girl, but any girl with hips would pop out of that.”
Leorio put a hand on Kurapika’s shoulder. “Let her borrow your tunic.”
The younger man pulled away from his grasp. “Did you not hear her, it would barely cover her.”
“That’s the poi-“
Kurapika smacked him over the head with his weapon. “Pervert.”
Leorio huffed. “So I’ve figured out who my target is, but how am I supposed to find her on this huge island? Isn’t walking around aimlessly a waste of energy?”
“Constantly whining and being a pervert would be an even bigger waste of energy.”
“You already have six points, so you’re finished. But if I don’t find my target…”
The three stopped in their tracks, Kurapika gasping. Down the path and causally leaned against a tree was none other than Hisoka.
“Hey.”
He held up a card nonchalantly. The two men stiffened, standing in front of (Name) protectively. Kurapika barely noticed her slowly raise her hand to grasp her hurt wrist, trembling.
“Imagine meeting you here…”
Leorio laughed humorlessly. “I keep running into people I don’t want to encounter.”
“You see, I need two more points. Could you give me your tags?”
“What was that! Screw that, I’m not gonna-“
“Leorio!”
Kurapika cut his eyes to (Name), and Leorio did the same. She was shaking, struggling to control her breathing. It was very obvious that Hisoka scared her, and it wasn’t just because he had a frightening presence. Something had happened between the two.
“You said that you only needed two points, correct? Which implies we are not your targets, correct?”
“I’m the one asking questions here. Will you give me your tags or not?”
He held a card to his lips, his eyes trained on (Name). The two men inches closer, blocking her from view.
“That depends. We currently have five tags. Mine, my target’s, Leorio’s, (Name)’s, and a tag only worth a single point to us. Of these, only two could be the number of your target. Mine, or the tag only worth a single point.”
“Correct. Neither of those is my target. So?”
“That’s leaves the other two tags. If you’re willing to take the tag worth only one point to us and leave, you can have it. But I will not let you have mine or (Name)’s, and the same goes for the other two.”
The two of them throw down their respective bags, readying themselves for battle. (Name) drew her dagger.
“If you insist on taking them by force, you’ll have to fight me!”
Both Kurapika and Leorio raised their weapons, the three men having a stare down. (Name) attempted to join them, but before she could move from behind them the two blocked her with their arms.
“Stay back.” Kurapika whispered. Hisoka’s eyes narrowed, taking in the sight of the three with wicked glee. He covered his face with his hand, laughing into it.
“Mmm….”
He pulled his hand down to glance at them. “Out of curiosity, what is your number?”
“#404.” Kurapika answered, frowning.
Hisoka glared at them for a bit longer, almost like he was savoring the moment. “Alright. You have a deal. I’ll only take the one tag.”
Kurapika nodded. He crouched down to grab his bag, fishing the badge out and placing it in the hollow part of a tree.
“I’ll leave it here.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll be standing here for a while.”
Before the three can leave, he stops them with a smirk.
“Girl, stay here for a moment.”
Leorio and Kurapika began to protest, but (Name) stops them. “It’s alright. I don’t want to anger or… excite him with my refusal.”
“You two, walk away a bit. Don’t worry, I don’t plan on killing her or anything. Just need to.. pass on a message.”
The two glanced at her as they walked away, Kurapika’s hand forming into a fist.
“What do you need to tell me?”
(Name) stand a good 5 feet away, her dagger still out and ready for use. Hisoka steps towards, and she takes a step back.
“Relax, I’m not gonna hurt you again. I really do have a message for you, from your little friend.”
(Name) perks up at this, breaking the distance between them. “You mean it? A message from-“
Hisoka puts a finger over her lips, smirking as she winced in disgust. “You surround yourself with such dangerous men, (Name). Be careful who you say his name around.”
She nodded hesitantly and he pulled his finger away, licking it.
“He said to meet him in York New, September 1st.”
Her heart started beating against her chest, and she gripped the fabric of her shirt. “I’m so glad he’s okay…”
‘Although he could have just texted me instead of getting the creepy clown to play messenger…’
Nonetheless, (Name) shook Hisoka’s hand, smiling up at him. “Thank you so much, I didn’t know you were this nice!”
After that she ran away, chasing after Leorio and Kurapika.
Hisoka watched her go, staring down at his hand for a moment before clenching his fist.
“I’m starting to understand why those two are so… interested in her.”
——————
(Name) made a simple soup for dinner, eating and drinking water from the stream as the two fussed over her.
“What did he tell you, did he hurt you?”
“Why the hell did you grab his hand, he could’ve crushed your windpipe with ease!”
(Name) leaned back against her leaf pillow, stretching out her legs. “I’m fine, aren’t I? And he didn’t tell me anything that you two would need to know.”
She wasn’t sure if she should tell them. After all, her friend wasn’t exactly a… great person. She was okay with that, but she knew others wouldn’t be so lenient.
“We’re just worried, (Name). You seem to have a knack for getting yourself into trouble with dangerous men.”
Kurapika didn’t know how right he was. (Name) pouted, snuggling up under their new shelter.
“I can handle myself… most of the time… I promise if what he told me was bad I would have told you by now.”
“Yeah? Well how about you tell us why you were shaking so badly when he looked at you?”
(Name) was silent at this, looking down at her wrist that had turned purple over the last few days. Leorio didn’t miss this.
“He’s the one that did that to you, isn’t he? That bastard… I’ll kill him!”
(Name) reached out to pull at his sleeve, shaking her head.
“Don’t. He’s too strong for any of us to beat. He… made me promise not to say anything. I agreed, for… your sake.”
She gestured to the two, before releasing Leorio’s sleeve.
The three fell into silence, and (Name) soon fell asleep. Kurapika took of his tunic and covered her with it, brushing the hair out of her face.
“She did that… to protect us?”
Leorio shook his head, gripping his blade.
“We’ll have to return the favor.”
—————
Four days had passed since they saw Hisoka, with nothing to show for it.
“Wanna head back to the starting point?”
“Huh?”
(Name) stopped, placing her canteen back in her bag after they’d all had a sip. Leorio continued.
“It’s possible that people have already finished.”
“No, we won’t be able to find anyone there. This phase is unique because you have a chance to recover your tag if you lose it. On the other hand, you might have six points in tags right now, but that doesn’t guarantee you’ll have them when the phase ends. You can’t finish it quickly.”
“I see.” Leorio grunts out, rubbing his aching legs.
“But it’s worth a shot. Only one day remains, people who already have six points will be inclined to wait near the goal. I would do the same.”
(Name) nods, jumping over the roots of a tree.
“Okay, let’s go!”
————
“Well? Anyone there?”
The three stare out at the place where they first disembarked. “No. No one that can easily be spotted.”
“Damn.”
“Perhaps we should split up to search after we decide on a place to reconvene.” Kurapika and Leorio sigh, (Name) raising an eyebrow at the suggestion. Had they forgotten that there was a Killer Clown on the loose?
“It’ll go faster with four people!”
“Huh?”
The three startle, quickly swiveling around to see Gon jump from a tree.
“Gon!”
“I guess we all had the same idea. I’ve been watching from up above, and a number of people are nearby.”
(Name) jumped up and tackled him in a hug, petting his head. “Gon!! You’re safe!”
“I see, we should search from above.”
Gon wiggled out of her grasp and Kurapika shook his head.
“We can’t, it’s only possible if you have eyes as sharp as Gon’s.”
(Name) agreed, looking at the tree with dismay. “And I don’t think I can climb a tree, not after what happened last time.”
“Last time? What happened last t-“
“Gon!”
Said boy perked up. “Yes?”
“Do you have the tags you need?”
His expression soured a bit. “Yeah, I guess.”
“Damn, so I’m the only one without enough points.”
“Who’s your target?”
Leorio handed Gon his card. “#246, a woman named Ponzu. I heard she used chemical weapons. Gon, did you see any women when you were up there?”
He shakes his head. “None besides (Name).”
“I see…”
Kurapika placed a hand on Leorio’s shoulder. “We can assume that there are four possibilities. She’s I. Good shape and still has her tag. She’s in good shape, but she lost her tag. She’s out of action, but she still has her tag. She’s out of action, and she doesn’t have her tag.”
“Is it really likely that she’d still have her tag if she’s out of action?”
“If she were caught in a sudden accident, or if she were defeated after hiding the tag. If she died after conceiving her tag, we won’t be able to find it.”
“Sounding gloomier by the second.” Leorio whined.
“Hey, do you know anything else about Ponzu? Does she wear a special perfume like (Name)?” Gon asked. (Name) sniffed herself, but all she could smell was soil and sweat. Kurapika gasped.
“Oh, that’s right! Gon can follow her scent!”
“But she might not wear perfume.”
“He can smell the chemicals she uses. She’s known for using drugs, right? Some of them must have strong scents. Well, Gon?”
Gon nodded. “Okay, I’ll give it a shot! That’s why I’m here.”
—————
The group of four travelled under the shade of trees and through hills of grass, Gon inhaling the air as they went.
By sunset, Gon sniffed out a cave where they stopped in front of. Leorio peered at the cave, giving Gon a nod.
“Is she in there, Gon?”
“Yep, definitely.”
“What do you want to do, Leorio?”
“I’m going inside.”
They all looked at him as he picked up a stick and began to approach the cave. “You guys wait here.”
He walked in, tapping the walls as he did. He threw his stick into the dark to test for a reaction.
“I’ll head inside. Don’t renter until I give you the okay.”
“30 minutes.”
“Huh?”
“If we don’t hear anything from you after 30 minutes, we’re coming in.”
Leorio denied Kurapika’s demand with a shake of his head.
“Unacceptable. If that happens, you guys should return to the start.”
“I can’t do that. Since we teamed up, I won’t abandon you now.”
(name) nodded, in agreement with Kurapika. “I still owe you from getting my… lucky pair back for me.”
She winked, causing a blush to erupt on his face.
“Then I quit the team. You don’t owe me anything. It’s selfish, considering all the help you’ve given me, but I’ll do this alone.”
Gon frowned. “No.”
Leorio ran back. “What did you say?!”
“We’re staying here no matter what! Still got a problem?”
He watched the threes faces, all of them looking at him with stubborn eyes. He sighed and pulled out his knife, tossing his briefcase to gon.
“Do whatever you like. Hold onto that for me.”
The three smiled between themselves.
———————
“-and then he bit me, like actually bit me! I was afraid he might be rabid so I ran away.”
“(Name), you attract the strangest people.”
(Name) had begun to tell them about her meeting her mysterious friend, although she kept his name and occupation secret. Kurapika rubbed his temple.
“Yeah, he is pretty strange, but cute in a way. He really liked the rose syrup I made so I mail him some every month. His address changes for work often but…”
She paused, biting her lip. “Sorry, I’m rambling. It’s just…”
“Nervous about Leorio taking so long?” Kurapika asked, a smile pulling at his lips. She nodded.
“It’s been nearly 30 minutes.”
“Kurapika, Gon, (Name)!”
The three shoot up at the sound of Leorio’s shouting.
“Don’t come in!”
The three run forward, Kurapika pushing (Name) back. “You stay here. Don’t move!”
With that, (Name) is alone again. She kicked the sandy ground, her lips forming into her another pout.
“Stupid boys and their stupid chivalry.” She crossed her arms, deciding to gather ingredients for dinner to pass the time. If they weren’t out in an hour, she’d go in.
—————
(Name) was lucky enough to find a nest full of eggs, so she boiled them and made a simple salad to go with it. It wasn’t much, but would fill their bellies enough to get through the night.
She stared at the entrance to the cave as the eggs boiled. She noticed smoke starting to pool out.
“Smoke? Oh god I hope they didn’t-“
(Name) quieted when she heard the d sound of shoes slapping against the cave floor. She gasped when she saw Gon carring the boys, plus Ponzu out of the cave.
“Holy- Gon how strong are you!?”
He let out a great before inhaling loudly. “Strong enough!”
—————
The boys explained what happened over dinner. Gon seemed particularly excited, his stomach growling loudly.
“Thanks for preparing dinner, (Name)!”
She patted his head, putting two one of her eggs onto his plate. “No problem. Here, take one of mine. Young boys need to eat!”
He didn’t argue, only gulping it down and grinning. After dinner the four gathered together to sleep, (Name) telling them stories about her mysterious friend, who they were beginning to wonder the motive of.
“(Name), I think that guy might be in l-“
Kurapika smacked Leorio across the head.
“Goodnight, let’s all get some rest before the big day tomorrow.”
Onii-Chan (x child reader)
⭐️Chapter 12: Ending the 4th Phase 💧
Tumblr media
(Venus/AmethystEmpire, I Love this so much asdidsdfdfs T~T ❤❤❤❤ )
Y/n was being carried by Illumi as she was napping. After finding Hisoka, Illumi had left the female in the hands of Hisoka, while he went to bury himself underground til the phase ended.
Y/n started to slowly wake up, rubbing her eyes she noticed that Hisoka was sitting in his spot with butterflies.
"Pretty butterflies..." She mumbled as she rubbed her eyes.
"You're awake~ How did you sleep my sweet little fox~" Hisoka looked in the direction of the waking female.
"Good..." After a few minutes of waking herself up fully. She started to chase the butterflies around, which were nearby Hisoka, he watched her with a smile on his face. Y/n was trying her best to catch a butterfly.
"Come here Mr butterfly! Let me catch you!" She said as she tried to grab the fragile insect.
Hisoka soon stood up. "I'll be back my sweet fox~ Don't go anywhere." Hisoka headed off as the female nodded her head. She soon heard moving bushes and looked to see Gon was quickly moving to follow Hisoka.
"Gon-Oniisan?" She tilted her head as a butterfly landed on her nose. She looked at her nose and took the red butterfly off her nose and let it sit on her finger.
"Hello Mr butterfly, my name is Y/n." She smiled at the creature that was resting on her finger. She had noticed that Foxy was sittin against the tree, where Hisoka was sitting. She noticed a few stitching in the stomach of Foxy, along with her pin '406' in the lap of the fox plush and a few other pins that Foxy was sitting on.
"Illu-Oniisan fixed you!" She smiled as she picked up foxy, as the butterfly fluttered off her finger.
"Foxy come." She said as the fox was surrounded by smoke as it appeared in front of her, and was double the size of the small girl.
"Sit!" Foxy sat in front of the small girl as she stood on her tippy toes and  pets the fox's head.
"You deserve headpats too!" She giggled as she petted the fox.
~~~~~~
"Where is Onii-chan..." Y/n pouted as she was laying down with Foxy, and her head was on his back, as she was looking at the stars.
"Hisoka-Onii-Chan Lied to me!" She huffed and sat up. She looked at Foxy, who was sleeping, while his ears were up, listening to their surroundings. As she was about to get off, Foxy rolled and laid on top of the small child.
"Foxy! Get off!" She whined and tried to wiggle out from under him. Foxy growled softly as he didn't move, making the girl huff.
"I know I promised to Onii-chan to stay here, but he is taking too long!"
She said and was still trying to get Foxy off her, but he wasn't budging since he was more than double the size of her, a lot stronger strength wise and heavier than her.
As this continued until Y/n was too tired and fell asleep
~~~~~~~~
Soon as Y/n heard a horn sound and a voice.
"The fourth Phase Of the exam has just ended. Will the applicants please return to the starting point at once. You will be given an hour of extra time to get to the boat. If you do not return, you will fail the exam"
"Onii-chan lied... Let's go foxy." Y/n huffed as Foxy got off the female and changed into his plush form. Y/n held it close as she jumped to find Illumi coming out of a hole, he started to place the needles back into his face, changing into his disguise.
"Lets go." Illumi said and picked the female up so they could get going.
"Thank you Illu-Oniisan for fixing Foxy!" She smiled happily at him as they continued to go.
~~~~~~
"Now, we will check the tags of everyone here!"  The lady, who was on the ship, spoke out to everyone there. Illumi had put the female down and she went to Killua to say hello, as she was ignoring her Oniisan for lying to her.
As everyone showed their tags she wrote down the names.
"#44 Hisoka, #53 Pokkle, # 99 Killua,#406 Y/n, #301 Gittarackur, #191 Bodoro, #294 Hanzo" The woman said as she wrote it down. "So only 7 applicants passed."
Y/n felt worried for Gon, Kurapika and Leorio, wondering where they were.
"Oh?" The woman looked up to see the 3 that Y/n was thinking about
"Gon-Oniisan!" Y/n yelled to the male getting his attention. "Kura-Oniisan! Leo-oniisan!" Gon grinned at the female and waved at her, while Kurapika and Leorio smiled at her.
"Just arrived at the last second." The female smiled "#404 Kurapika, #403 Leorio, #405 Gon. 10 applicants have passed to the final phase."
Y/n cheers as she saw all her friends were here.

Reunited
Part 11
Illumi x Reader
Part 10
Part 12
The next to enter had been Gerreta, applicant #384. Illumi didn’t seem to care that much, and (Name) was already fast asleep.
Illumi startled slightly when he felt the weight of something on his shoulder. He turned, seeing (Name) had leaned against him, her face peaceful. It seemed he was a more comfortable alternative to leaning on the wall.
He took his job as her pillow seriously, staying still as he could to not disturb her peace. Soon after, Illumi follows her lead and drifted off to sleep.
————
(Name) awoke to the sound of something large rolling across the floor. Illumi had stirred just a moment before her and was already moving to stand up. She did the same, following him to a metal shelf containing plates of food.
“There are bathrooms down this hall, you have 30 minutes to complete your meals and relive yourselves.”
(Name) gasped, grabbing Illumi’s arm.
“YIPPEE, there’s bathrooms! I won’t have to pee in front of everyone!”
He watched as she ran into the hallway, bursting into the bathroom.
“What a crude girl you have, Illumi.”
Illumi’s attention was drawn away from (Name) by Hisoka’s presence next to him. He frowned, crossing his arms. “She’s not “my girl”, Hisoka, and the way she talks has no bearing on her usefulness to me.”
Hisoka laughed heartily, clapping him on the back. Illumi sent him a warning look, pulling away from him.
“Oh don’t be shy, Lulu. I can tell you have some kind of feelings for that girl. Why else would you help her this much in the exam?”
Illumi sighed, pushing back his purple hair. It was hard to keep his disguise up when he became stressed.
“I just need her for information, that’s all. Once the exam is over I’ll interrogate her, then kill her if I need to. I don’t need her distracting me from my goals.”
Illumi’s actions told a different story. Hisoka had noticed the way he looked at her, the way his touch was gentle and careful. He knew Illumi wouldn’t be able to hurt (Name), but…
“Oh Lulu, don’t you worry about that. I can take some stress off of you and kill her n-“
Illumi’s bloodlust rose to such an extent that Hisoka paused, a grin growing across his face. He’d never seen Illumi this angry, especially not over another person.
“You forget your place. You are not to touch her, understand? I won’t hesitate to end your life right here and now if you can’t follow that simple rule.”
Illumi’s disguise trembled slightly, threatening to come undone. Hisoka huffed, but backed off.
“You’re so tense, Lulu. I already know not to interfere.”
He shrugged, turned away from the angered man and walked away. Almost on cue, (Name) walked out of the bathroom, giving a relieved sigh.
“Ahh, that’s better. I’m-“
She froze, a shiver running down her spine. Illumi’s bloodlust had gone down significantly once Hisoka had backed off, but it was still potent enough for (Name) to detect.
“Hey, Gittarackur, you alright? I don’t mean to assume but you feel off…”
Illumi stared at her for a moment. He thought about what Hisoka had said. Maybe killing her would make him feel better, help him focus.
She tilted her head, taking a step forward. Illumi had decided, he had to kill her now. He reached his hand towards her with the intent to crush her skull-
Without a word, she leaned into his touch, smiling up at him without a care in the word.
She trusted him. Trusted that those hands of his that had killed thousands wouldn’t hurt her. Her cheek was warm and soft, a sharp contrast to his calloused palms.
“You have such gentle hands, Gittarackur.”
Illumi’s heart thumped in his chest, his hand beginning to tremble.
No, (Name), you can’t look at him with those sweet eyes while he contemplated ending your life. You shouldn’t sigh in contentment against his palm that was meant to kill.
But she did. She caressed the back of his hand with her delicate fingers, a smile never leaving her lips.
Illumi pulled his hand away and rushed off, leaving her standing there confused. (Name) looked down at her hand, wondering why she felt so safe in his grasp.
“It feels so… familiar.
——————
(Name) had tried several times to join back up with Gittarackur, each attempt ending with him sprinting to the other side of the room. She gave up after the 5th time, sliding onto the floor next by herself.
She spent the rest of the time pouting to herself, only getting up to use the restroom, eat, and stretch. The time on the clock ticked away, until there was only a minute left.
The group of four she’d been separated from still hadn’t shown up, and she worried that they wouldn’t get there in time. She wondered if she’d be able to continue alone after she’d received so much physical and emotional support.
A door started to slide up, catching her attention.
“Kurapika, applicant #404, is the twentieth-first to pass. Killua, applicant #99, is the twenty-second to pass. Gon, applicant #405, is the twenty-third to pass.”
The three stepped out, seeming to relax a bit with their entry.
“My butt hurts! I didn’t expect a slide for the easy and short path.”
(Name) hung her head, not seeing Leorio. ‘Only three of them?’
“That was really close!” Gon exclaimed, looking up at Kurapika. The older boy nodded, tenderly rubbing his hands.
“My hands are covered in blisters.”
“Same here!”
(Name) jumped up at the sound of Leorio’s voice, a smile spreading across her face. Leorio and Tonpa pushed at each other, trying to get through the door first. (Name) rushed over, spreading her arms wide.
“My boys!”
The four turned just in time for her to pull them into her arms for a group hug, squeezing them tight.
“(Name), you passed!”
Kurapika tried to hide the blush spreading across his face from her being so close to him, though Leorio did nothing to hide his happiness, instead he hugged her back with all his might.
“Of course, I actually came in third place!”
Killua and Gon gasped, grinning.
“Third place?! You some kind of superhuman?” Gon asked, his eyes wide with wonder. (Name) giggled, ruffling his hair.
“Nah, I barely made it. Just glad I had a partner to help me.”
Kurapika relaxed under her touch, leaning his head against her shoulder.
“Glad you made it out safe. I’m exhausted.” Kurapika said with a yawn. (Name) caressed his head gently, feeling the weight of all four boys slowly lean against her until she fell backwards.
“H-hey! You guys really are tired.”
Illumi watches this exchange from a distance, quietly seething at the two men’s relaxed nature around (name). Was he more jealous of them touching you, or how comfortable they were showing their affection?
——————
“The third phase of the exam is over! 26 have passed, one has died.”
(Name) helped the four stand, and shouldered her book bag. The exit slid open, revealing the sun was up.
The twenty five appliance applicants who have passed the exams third phase exit the trick tower, one by one for a long awaited breath of fresh air.
Outside a man with a purple Mohawk and glasses stands, (Name) thinking he looks kind of cute for a second before absentmindedly holding onto Kurapika’s hand.
“Ladies and gentlemen, congratulations on having escaped Trick Tower. Only the Fourth Phase and the Final Phase remain.”
He points behind him, a grin playing on his lips.
“The Fourth Phase will take place over there on Zevil Island. Let us proceed.”
He snaps his fingers and a man rolls out a table like object.
“I will need you to draw lots.”
The crowd gives out confused noises, (Name) using her free hand to scratch the back of her head sheepishly.
“For what?”
(Name) recognized the man as Pokkle, #287. The man with the purple Mohawk grinned.
“To determine who will hunt and who will be hunted. In here are twenty four cards. In other words, your ID numbers are on the cards. Now, I need to each to draw a card, in the order by which you exited the tower. Will the first person come forward?”
Hisoka strode forward, drawing his card. Next was Illumi, who shoved his hand in and pulled out his card roughly.
Next was (Name), who’s stride forward to the box caught the attention of a few people. They hadn’t expected such a weak girl to have gotten third place.
“Hey, killua.”
“Huh?”
“He said something about hunting and being hunted. Does that mean we’ll be fighting each other?”
“Yeah, probably.”
He glanced over at (Name), wondering if she’d be able to survive this phase. Killua bit the inside of his cheek, walking away to retrieve his card.
—————
“Everyone’s taken a card? Then, remove the seal on your cards.”
Everyone did as told, quickly removing the seal. For almost every applicant, there was a number on the back of the card.
“The card indicates your target.”
A shocked silence took over the crowd as they all covered their badges.
“The box has recorded which card each of you drew. This means that you’re free to dispose of the cards if you wish. The objective is to steal your target’s ID tag.”
One of three brothers sighed out in relief. “Oh, so we don’t need to kill each other.”
“Naturally, you’re free to use any method you choose to steal ID tags, including killing your target and taking the tag off the corpse.”
“That sounds like the fastest way.”
“Listen carefully. Your targets ID tag is worth three points. Your own ID is also worth three points. All other ID tags are worth one point. You need six points to advance to the Final Phase. So while on Zevil Island, you must gather enough ID tags to total six points. That is the conduction for clearing the Hunter Exam’s Fourth Phase.”
He looks to the group, his grin widening.
“One more thing. Since one of the contestants died, we have an uneven number. One of the applicants here has a blank card.”
Everyone looked around, confused.
“The person with the blank card gets a free pass. They have no need to worry about stealing a badge. The only thing they need to do is keep theirs and stay alive.”
A few people mumble about the unfairness of the situation, but the man is quick to quell their anger.
“However, if they lose their badge, they are out of the game. The person with the blank card’s badge is worth…”
He pauses for effect.
“6 points.”
(Name) gulps, looking down at her blank card. She shoves it into her bra, hoping having it on her person would keep it safe.
“The person with the blank card is required to keep it on them. That is all.”
—————
“We’d like to thank everyone on board for their excellent work during the Hunter Exam’s third phase. I will serve as your guide. My name is Khara! It will take two hours for this boat to reach Zevil Island. All twenty-five applicants remaining here are automatically qualified to take next year’s exam! So if you fail this year, don’t feel bad! Please try again next year…”
She stopped her speech once she realized no one was listening.
Killua and gon had lain their heads on (Name)’s lap to nap once the boat had set sail. She absentmindedly stroked their hair, allowing Kurapika to lean against her shoulder again.
“The battle has begun.”
Kurapika crossed his arms and rested his eyes, sighing contentedly.
“Yeah, everyone’s removed their ID tags, and hid them.”
Leorio tried not to pout. He had attempted to lie on (Name)’s lap as well, but had been pushed off by the two boys. Kurapika called him a pervert even after (Name) said she didn’t mind.
“Well, you’re free to do as you like, for the next two hours.”
Leorio peeked over at Kurapika, chewing on his lip nervously.
“Speaking hypothetically… if you happened to be my target, I wouldn’t show any mercy.”
“Naturally. If you happened to be my target, I would say the same.”
Leorio jumped.
“Am I your target??”
Kurapika chuckled, the vibration from his chest making (Name) stir from her nap.
“I was speaking hypothetically.”
“Oh, right.”
“Don’t worry, you are not my target.”
“I-I see. And you aren’t my target!”
Leorio’s gaze drifted to (Name). “Speaking of targets… am I yours?”
(Name) rubbed the sleep from her eyes, shaking her head. “None of you four are my target.”
About an hour into the trip, Gon and Killua awoke from their nap. They stretched lazily, sprawling out along the floor. (Name) pulled out some mints from her bag, offering it to the two.
“Ooo, thanks (Name)!” Gon exclaimed, savoring the flavor. Killua popped the mint into his mouth, slowly rising from his place on her lap.
“Come on Gon, let’s go explore the boat.”
(Name) stood up, brushing off her skirt. “I’ll come with!”
———————
The three sat together, (Name) on one side of killua and gon on the other. The three had eaten several mints by then.
“Gon, what number did you draw?”
“How about you?”
“Secret.”
(Name) lifted an eyebrow at this exchange, poking Killua’s cheek. He let out a laugh, swatting her hand away.
“Don’t worry, neither of you are my target.”
Gon smiled, agreeing. “Neither if you are my target either.”
They two turned to look at (Name). She held up her hands and shook her head. “None of you four are my target.”
The three sat in silence for a moment, before killua broke it.
“Wanna show each other our numbers at the same time?”
Gon and (Name) nodded.
“Ready and!”
The three showed each other their cards, the two gasping at (Name)’s.
“You got the blank card… and Gon… seriously?”
(Name) cringed, pulling her card back. “Ew, Hisoka.”
“You have really bad luck, gon.”
“You think so?”
They laugh, tucking away their cards. Gon looks around the boat, then back to Killua. “Who’s #199?”
Killua shrugged. “You don’t know either? I’d didn’t bother to memorize everyone’s numbers. After the initial explanation, I started checking tags but everyone had already removed them. That’s so lame…”
(Name) reached over to hold onto Gon’s hand, Killua having stopped mid sentence. He was trembling.
“Gon?”
He startled, surprised at (Name)’s hand griping his. “What?”
“Are you happy or scared?” Killua asks, (Name) giving him a questioning look.
“Both, I guess. In a straight-up fight, I wouldn’t stand a chance. But if I only need to steal his IS tag, then I have a shot.”
“Yeah.”
“Right now, I might actually have a chance, that scares me a little, but I think it’s worth it.”
Killua smiles, standing up. “I see. Well, let’s do our best.”
He stops before he leaves, turning back to the two.
“Make sure you survive, Gon, (Name).”
They both nod. “You too!”
—————-
The ship had arrived, the woman from before placing a thick wooden board for everyone to walk across.
“Thanks for your patience, everyone. We’ve finally arrived at Zevil Island! Now, please disembark in the order by which you cleared the Third Phase. After each person disembarks, we’ll wait two minutes before the next person’s turn.”
Killua huffed, crossing his arms behind his head. “(Name), you’ll have so much time to hide. Not fair.” He stuck his tongue out at her, and she did the same.
“I’m not gonna hide, I’m gonna brawl!”
“Yeah sure.”
The two stared at each other before bursting into laughter. The woman from before, Khara, continued her speech.
“After each person disembarks, we’ll wait two minutes before the next person’s turn.”
“That means we’ll be waiting in here quite a while.” Killua groaned.
“You will stay on this island for exactly one week. During this time, you must amass your six points of ID tags and return here. All right then, the first person may start!”
Hisoka stepped off the boat, the group watching him warily. (Name) rubbed her wrist carefully, giving him her meanest glare.
“I understand. Those who disembark earlier hold the advantage.” Kurapika remarked, his eye drifting to (Name) as she stepped forward after Illumi left the boat.
“Yeah. They can hide and monitor their targets movements.”
“Two minutes have passed, the third person may start.”
(Name) gave her group one last hug, promising to survive before she left. She could feel the ninja from before, Hanzo glaring down at her, but decided to ignore him for now.
She ran out into the trees, using them as coverage from the prying eyes of her fellow applicants. The first thing she needed to do was scout out the area and find fresh water.
The island was large, stretching far beyond her like of sight. There were multiple streams dotting across the landscape, full of fish. There were also several fruit trees and various wild game running amok.
If it was a waiting game she had to play, she’d play it.
(Name) sat herself under a tree, unloading her backpack onto the ground. She didn’t have much left, just her empty canteens, some mints, her fire starter, her assassin grade blade, and a basic first aid kit.
“Not much, but I can work with it.”
She look down at her badge, biting her lip. “Where am I gonna hide you?”
—————
Illumi observed (Name) from a comfortable distance, a bit impressed with her hiding place for her badge. He certainly wouldn’t have thought to check there.
When he made she sure she was alone, he left his hiding spot, making sure to step on a twig to alert her to his presence.
She startled, hand on her knife inside her backpack. He held his hands up in surrender, chuckling at her response. “Just me.”
(Name) stayed still for a moment before relaxing and releasing her blade. She closed her backpack for good measure, shouldering the ever lighter pack with a huff.
“Nearly scared me to death. How you holding out, Gittarackur?”
He shrugged, his body twitching. (Name) leaned against the the tree she’d been sitting under, the canteens in her back rattling noisily.
“You’ll need to be a lot more careful. Bad people take this exam, could cost you your life.”
Illumi had one reason to be here with her right now, and that was getting her off this island alive. He was still wary of her strange power over him, so he kept a reasonable distance.
“More careful? I thought I was doing okay.”
(Name) crossed her arms defiantly, her lip poking out. He scoffed, pointing to the ground.
“Footprints lead right to you. And you’re noisy, rattling around with that backpack. I could hear you from a mile away.”
For emphasis he pointed to their left, where an applicant crouched down in the brush to watch the two. (Name) gasped and stepped away from the tree. Once being spotted, the man ran off.
“He’s been following you for an hour now and you didn’t even notice him.”
She tried to think about every step she had taken. When was the moment she started being hunted? Was it when she was surveying that stream to the north? Or could it have been when she was distracted by those pretty red butterflies?
She needed to get her head in the game. It didn’t matter how clever her hiding spot for her badge was. She could be killed, this wasn’t just a test, this was a hunt!
(Name) peered at Illumi, a hopeful smile on her face. “Well, you wanna teach me how to be a hunter.”
Illumi nodded.
“I will, for a price.”
—————
In another part of the world, a man sips on a cup of tea with rose syrup mixed in for flavor. He looks at his phone, contemplating what he should text back.
“Hmph. Stupid Hisoka. Never responds on time.”
He types back a simple response, a ghost of a smile on his lips.
‘Tell her I’ll be in York New, September 1st.’
For a moment he considers texting her the message himself. She’d given him her number after all.
“That girl… taking the exam without telling. Stupid.”
He huffs, leaning back against his bed. Even through his anger at her doing something so dangerous, he feels… weirdly proud. His heart swells thinking about seeing her again.
“I’ll see you soon, (Name).”

Part 10
Illumi x Reader
Part 9
Part 11
Tumblr media
Dawn breaks, as the airship carrying (Name) and her friends approaches its destination. The Third Phase of the Hunter Exam is about to begin.
(Name) startles awake when she hears an announcement play over the speakers.
“I apologize for the long wait. The airship will soon arrive at its destination.”
The girl rises from her place on the floor, watching the other woman do the same out of the corner of her eye.
(Name) stretches lightly and heads to the bathroom to get a quick shower before they land.
—————
The applicants gather on top of a large pillar, looking around in confusion.
“What is this?”
“There’s nothing here.”
(Name) joins her group, checking over her bag as she does.
“Ahem.”
Everyone turns to give Beans their full attention.
“Everyone, the exams Third Phase will begin here, at the top of trick tower.” Beans smiles. A man tilts his head, looking at Beans in confusion.
“Trick Tower?”
“To pass this phase, you must reach the tower’s base alive. The time limit is seventy-two hours. With that, we will now begin the Third Phase. I pray for your success!”
“No way.” Leorio whispers. (Name) begins to stretch her limbs to limber up.
The crowd disperses to check out their surroundings. (Name) attempts to do so as well, but before she can get more than ten feet away, she falls into a trap door.
The other four in her group remain unaware of her absence for around 5 minutes, until Gon’s eyes scan the area around them.
“Where did (Name) go?”
—————
“Ouch…”
(Name) stood slowly, rubbing her hurt wrist gently. She’d landed on it when she fell, and although Leorio had bandaged it and given her an ice pack, it still ached.
She was in a plain room, the only visible detail being a circular table holding several bracelets. On the wall behind the table was a sign.
“The five of you must follow the will of the majority to reach the goal.” (Name) read aloud. She let out a cry when the roof of the room opened up and another person fell in.
Though saying they fell in wasn’t accurate, the man landed perfectly. (Name) felt a twinge of jealousy at his safe landing. Her throbbing wrist was a constant reminder of her less than graceful tumble.
The man in question was the disguised Illumi, who (Name) recognized as Gittarackur. She studied how he surveyed the room with a careful eye, his gaze only faltering when it landed on her.
“Hello, I’m (Name). You’re Gittarackur, right?”
“… yes.”
Illumi’s eyes didn’t leave her figure, noticing her pained expression. His eyes softened ever so slightly when she leaned towards him, holding out her good hand. He shook it firmly, trying his best to be gentle.
“It’s nice to meet you, Gittarackur. I hope we can work together to get out of here.”
For a moment Illumi wondered if she was this kind to everyone. The way she smiled her pretty smile and shook his hand so delicately… did she do that with every person she met?
His thoughts were interrupted by the loud growl of his stomach. He had trouble sleeping last night and had slept in, which was unusual for him. Because of that, he hadn’t been able to eat breakfast. If his mother was here, she would scold him.
“Oh, did you eat breakfast? It was really good! I stuffed some extra bacon and toast into my bag. Want some?”
He felt something in his chest flutter. Her concern for him seemed to cause a reaction, what that was exactly he didn’t know. He could only nod quietly and watch her unpack the toast and bacon she had wrapped in aluminum foil.
Illumi had seen her packing the extra provisions before, so he decided to trust that she hadn’t poisoned. He was decent at reading peoples character, and (Name) didn’t seem like the type to poison him.
Once the food was in his hands, he devoured it like a starving dog, forgetting his manners. (Name) began packing her bag back up as he did.
—————
The two sat in silence as three other people fell into the room, one after the other. The first was a short man, second a tall one, a third a scrawny one. None of them seemed too interested in team work, so (Name) stuck by Illumi. Once the last person had fallen in, they all put on the bracelets and began the phase.
The group made their way through several doors, deciding which way to go each time. They mostly chose the same answers, besides when there was an option for left or right.
(Name) kept a close eye on “Gittarackur”, who she felt oddly connected with. She wasn’t quite sure why, but he felt like the best choice of a companion while she was separated from her group.
After one last answer, the group arrived at labyrinth like structure. The walls were 20 feet tall, and covered in vines. It smelled like decay, almost causing (Name) to vomit up her breakfast. She steeled herself, leaning against the doorway for support.
“So, this is our trial.”
The short man squatted down and began stretching his legs out, a confident smirk on his face. “I’ll just climb to the top and walk right out of here. See ya, losers!”
Before anyone could stop him, he climbed up the walls using the vines. (Name) marveled at his climbing ability, clapping as he easily reached the top.
“Wow, that’s amazing! He-“
She felt someone’s hands cover her eyes. (Name) almost wish they had covered her ears too, because the sound of screaming was almost worse than what she would have seen.
Illumi watched as the man was sliced in half by the talons of a harpy like beast. The harpy let out a satisfied screech as she began to tear into the flesh of the man, the sound of skin ripping and blood splashing the rock walls of the labyrinth echoing through the halls.
Once the harpy had eaten its full, it carried the remains off, perhaps to feed its young. Illumi waited until it was out of sight to pull his hands away from (Name)’s eyes. He bristled when he spotted big tears falling from her eyes and rolling down her cheeks.
Her hands shook as she turned to look at him, her eyes wide with fear. “Will that happen to me?”
Illumi felt the world around him pause. He wondered why he felt the need to comfort her right now, why her trembling hands and watery eyes made him so angry and so…
“No. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
That was that. He grabbed her hand and they continued through the labyrinth. He made sure to keep her on the opposite side the man had been devoured on.
——————
They’d been walking for about 4 hours when (Name) asked for a break. The group of four sat down, (Name) passing out drinks and food to everyone. Only Illumi noticed how small her own portion was. Another feeling washed over him. He was beginning to think this girl was more trouble than she was worth.
“Gittarackur!”
(Name) leaned towards him, whispering into his ear. Illumi jumped, having her so close that he could smell her strawberry lilac perfume made him… uneasy? Again he couldn’t place the feeling. She grabbed his hand, setting something in the palm of his hand.
“Shh, I only have this one left. Don’t tell the others.”
When he opened up his palm to peer in, he saw a shiny piece of butterscotch candy. The wrapping crinkled when he moved it, causing (Name) to frantically look around and press a finger to her lips.
He held back the urge to roll his eyes, opening it quietly then placing it on his tongue. (Name) perked up, her eyes observing his face fit a reaction that never came. Her lips formed a pout and she crossed her arms.
“Do you like it?”
She tried her best not to look disappointed when he shrugged. Illumi took a bit of pleasure in the way she huffed and packed her bag, finding it cute.
“It’s good.”
(Name) stopped at his words. She peered up from her bag to see him smiling, albeit a bit of a creepy smile. Nonetheless she smiled back, zipping her bag and placing it on her back.
While the two had been busy, the tall man had vanished. The last man, who neither of them had spoken to, seemed somewhat… suspicious. Illumi decided to keep a closer eye on him than before.
Another two hours passed on in silence, only occasionally interrupted by the sound of (Name) tripping over vines. Illumi had applied over 5 of (Name)’s bandaids to her slowly growing collection of scrapes.
“Can’t you be more careful? Didn’t anyone teach you to watch where you walk?” Illumi asked, applying the sixth Hello Kitty bandage to her knee. (Name) whined lightly, pulling her knees to her chest to pout.
“I am! It’s just…”
She looks away, her eyes on the vines.
“It’s like the vines are reaching out to grab me.”
Illumi stops, blinking slowly before reaching out and grabbing her ankle. (Name) starts to question him when he pulls her up by her leg, looking at her ankle questioningly.
“H-hey! Put me down!”
(Name) wiggled, trying to escape his ironclad grip to no avail. She instead chose to focus on keeping her skirt down. Even though she was wearing shorts underneath, it was still embarrassing to have a stranger holding her up by her ankles like she were a vegetable.
Illumi stared at her ankle, a theory forming in his mind. Her ankles were red, as if they had rope burn. He was sure if it now.
“The vines… are alive.”
He let her go, focusing on the scrawny man from before.
“What happened with you and the other man?”
The scrawny man started laughing, tears welling up in his eyes. “That man was my BROTHER. We came here to do the Hunter Exam together, hoping to pass so we could get some good paying jobs. But…”
He punched the wall, his fist breaking upon impact. “Those damn vines. While you two were having a relaxing picnic, my brother and I decided to sneak away to get out before you. Makes it easier to get through the phase when you have less competition right?”
He laughed humorlessly, biting his trembling lip. “My brother goes ahead of me to make sure it’s safe. He’s always been like that, my big brother. Always there for me, always protecting me…”
The man sighs, dropping his broken hand.
“Not this time. When he didn’t come back I went to get him, and what did I see? These fucking vines had encased him. Twisting him up like a pretzel, begging me to just kill him.”
(Name) held her hand over her mouth, waiting patiently for him to continue.
“And I did. How could I ignore my brother’s pain? I’ve helped him put sick animals out of misery, I’d be a hypocrite to let my own brother suffer like that.”
Illumi stood in front of (Name) protectively, waiting.
“Is that it?”
The man rolled his eyes, letting out a haughty laugh.
“Oh no no, of course not. The vines, they attached themselves to me. They’re alive, a network of living organisms. My brother is in there, and he’s hungry.”
He pulled out a hatchet, twirling it expertly.
“So I’m gonna feed you to them. Your blood will keep my brothers consciousness alive.”
The man gripped the handle of his hatchet, his broken hand cracking under the pressure.
(Name) closed her eyes, and when she opened them the man was dead on the floor. Illumi wiped blood off of the killing needle, his face neutral.
“Those vines cause hallucinations when they’re cut. He must of cut some when enacting his mercy killing. Vines must of made him think his brother was still alive and needed to feed.”
He began walking again, this time making sure to stay in the middle of the path to avoid the reaching vines. (Name) followed close behind.
She tried not to think about how easily her companion had taken a life, instead deciding to focus on the exam.
——————
The two reached the end of the labyrinth without much fuss. (Name) leaned against the now vine-less wall and sighed out in relief.
“When this exam is over I am going to sleep all day long.” she whined out, rubbing at her aching wrist.
(Name) and Illumi exit through a stone door, a voice saying they were 2nd(Illumi) and 3rd(Name) to complete the exam. It had taken them a total of 12 hours and 2 minutes.
Once they had entered the room, Illumi turned to see Hisoka sitting on the stone floor, leaning against the wall.
“I figured you’d already crossed the finish line.”
Hisoka only grinned, his eyes flitting to (Name) for just a second before another door opened.
“ALL RIGHT! I’m the first to fini-“
“Hanzo, applicant #294, is the fourth to pass!”
“Huh?”
Hanzo glances around the room, his gaze passing over each applicant before he cries out.
“No!! I don’t believe this! I came in fourth…”
(Name) laughed nervously, scooting behind Illumi to avoid Hisoka’s prying eyes. Illumi noticed this, looking between the two suspiciously.
“Let’s rest. We’ll have to wait around 60 hours for the other applicants to finish.” Illumi said, sitting down on the dusty floor. (Name) huffed, plopping down beside him with a pout on her lips.
“What if I have to pee? This sucks.”
Illumi tilted his head. “You can just go to a corner, I guess.”
(Name) groaned, covering her anguished expression with her hands. “Gittarackur, I am NOT going to pee in front of a bunch of guys, especially Hisoka. I feel like he would be into that.”
She whispered the last part into Illumi’s ear, looking over at Hisoka warily. Illumi raised an eyebrow, a smile pulling at his lips. He didn’t respond to her statement, only leaning against the wall and closing his eyes.

Illumi x Reader
PART 3
pt. 2
pt. 4
Illumi, disguised at Gittarackur, kept his distance from the group he was watching, making sure to avert his gaze as often as possible to not cause suspicion.
He had his eye on a single member of the group, a girl with the same aura of someone he lost long ago.
30 Minutes Earlier
As the room began to fill, Illumi made sure to watch every single person of interest that came in. Eventually he got bored of this, sensing no potential with his nen, he decided to instead watch over his brother.
After doing that for a bit, he again became bored. Unknown to most, Illumi wasn’t the best at keeping on task when it wasn’t necessary. The test would be easy enough to pass so he didn’t see a need to scout out every single contestant, after all not a single one of them seemed as capable as him or Hisoka.
His dark eyes scanned the crowd one last time, taking in his surroundings. The elevator had just dropped off its last batch of contestants. He decided he could at least check them out.
Illumi slid down from his perch on the wall. As he got closer to the group he froze, gripping his needles so tightly they nearly snapped.
Smiling and laughing with the group was a girl that made his heart stop. She offered out snacks to the young boy accompanying her, which he took instantly with a thanks.
“Good thing we didn’t drink that juice. I don’t think I could handle getting sick from expired juice while completing the exam..” the girl said, ruffling the boys hair. “Thanks, Gon.”
Illumi watched from the shadows. The girl zipped up her bag, dropping a picture. She didn’t seem to notice and ran off to catch up with her group.
Illumi swooped in, picking up the picture and returning to his spot. He unfolded the photo and inspected it.
‘It’s…’
His eyes widened ever so slightly, gripping the photo so tightly it crinkled.
The photo showed two young teens, leaning against each other to get into frame. Although their faces were a bit blurry, he recognized it instantly.
He took in a breath to calm his accelerated heartbeat. He couldn’t be completely sure it was her until he heard her name.
Illumi tucked the picture into his pocket. ‘I can use this as an excuse to talk to her later…’ he thought, having calmed down significantly. He couldn’t rush things. It had been nearly 10 years since they’d last met, if he approached her now in his disguise he’d scare her away.
Even if it wasn’t her, she still may know where to find (Name), given she had that picture.
Illumi sighed, stepping from the shadows and staring at the girl. He tried to reason why he should even care if it WAS her. After the incident he hadn’t even tried to track her down, so why try now?
‘If for nothing else, to satisfy my curiosity. Then we can go out separate ways.’
He nodded to himself, deeming that a good enough reason.
Current Time
(Name) let out a groan, her forehead covered in sweat. “We’ve been running for 20 minutes, how much longer?”
Leorio didn’t answer. He couldn’t, he was having enough trouble keeping his breath and didn’t want to waste it on talking.
“I’m not sure. Try to pace yourself. You’re carrying a pretty heavy backpack, I’m surprised you’ve been able to get this far.” Kurapika replied.
(Name) wondered for a moment if he was implying he didn’t expect her to do well because she wasn’t skinny or because of the backpack, but she decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.
“Uh huh… well if anyone wants to lighten my load, I’ve got some water to drink.”
The two boys perked up.
“Yes please,” the answered in unison. (Name) wanted to laugh, but kept it in. She handed out a canteen for them to both sip on. Gon took a big drink, handed it back, a little embarrassed.
“Sorry Miss (Name), I drank the rest.” He lowered his head.
(Name) smiled and patted his head. “Don’t worry Gon, I’ve got two other canteens. You just helped lighten my backpack! Thank you very much.”
Gon lifted his head back up and grinned.
Another 30 minutes of running had passed. The four had separated a bit, with Kurapika being the closest to the front. (Name) stayed relatively close to Gon, and Leorio was in front of them.
(Name)’s attention was brought back to the exam when she heard Leorio shouting.
“Hey, wait up kid!!”
He seemed to be yelling at a kid around Gon’s age with spiky white hair. She couldn’t see his face.
“Hmm?” The boy hummed in response .
“You should show the Hunter Exam some respect!”
“What do you mean?”
Leorio huffed, shaking his fist.
“Why are you using a skateboard? That’s cheating!”
“Why?”
(Name) and Gon looked at each other in confusion.
“Why… this is an endurance test!”
“No it isn’t!”
Everyone’s attention was on Gon now.
“The examiner only told us to follow him.”
(Name nodded in agreement. “Also you shouldn’t be picking on a little kid, let him skate if he wants.”
“Whose side are you two on!?”
The white haired boy tilted his head and slowed his skateboard to be beside the two.
“How old are you?”
“I’m 12!”
He hummed.
‘Hmm… he’s the same age as me…’
The boy jumped off his skateboard and caught it in his hand.
“Guess I’ll run too!”
“Wow! That was cool!”
He seemed to be suppressing a smile.
“I’m Killua.”
“I’m Gon, and this is (Name)!”
The three talked for a bit, (Name) giving the two some water as they did. She could tell Killua was a bit shy and not very trusting. She made sure to drink some of the water first to show it was safe, which he seemed to appreciate.
After a while, Gon stopped. The other two followed suit, turning to see Leorio doubled over. He had dropped his suitcase and seemed to be struggling to breath.
(Name) started to walk towards him but Gon put his hand up and shook his head.
Leorio continued to struggle to breath, the other contestants having already ran far beyond them, even (Name), as compassionate as she was, began to worry.
“Hey, forget him. Let’s go.” Killua said, having lost his patience.
Gon said nothing, not moving an inch.
Leorio coughed, then grit his teeth.
“Screw this…”
He launched back into a sprint, leaving the three behind in his dust.
“I’m gonna become a Hunter!!”
He screamed.
“DAMN IT ALL!!!”
Gon and (Name) looked on, grinning. Gon cast his fishing pole and grabbed Leorios suitcase.
“SO cool!” Killua said, staring at Gon. (Name) giggled, and stretched before beginning to run.
The two followed behind her like two little duckings.
“Promise I can try that later?”
“Only if I can try your skateboard!!”
30 mins later
They had reached the 80 Kilometer mark, and it seemed like their Examiner had picked up the pace. They were all running on stairs now, trying to be careful not to trip.
“This guys insane, he’s prancing up the stairs as if they’re not even there.” One of the contestants complained.
Back with (Name)’s group, the two boys were beginning to look a bit bored. Killua’s eyes lit up.
“Hey Gon, you wanna race to see who finished first?” He asked, his cat like smile spreading across his face.
Gon looked to (Name) for approval. She waved her hand, in their direction.
“Go on, I’ll be fine. Just be careful and come back to me if you need anything.”
“Okay. The loser has to buy the other’s dinner!” Gon announced.
“You’re on!”
With that the two raced off, leaving (Name) to her thoughts.
After another 10 minutes, (Name) managed to catch up to Leorio and Kurapika, who were in the middle of a conversation.
“That’s why I will capture the Phantom Troupe, to avenge my clan. I can still hear their eyes crying out in anguish.”
(Name) kept quiet. She could hear the anguish in Kurapikas words. She knew what it was like to lose people, so she made a mental note to talk to him later. This path of revenge he was seeing may lead him down a path of despair.
“If I get my Hunter’s License I can get jobs in the black market and find information on them.”
“But you’ll have to swallow your pride and become the kind of Hunter you despise.”
Leorio replied, cutting his eyes at the boy.
“Kurapika…” (Name) said softly, finally catching up to run by his side. The boy looked over to her, putting on a weak smile.
“I’m alright. The blow to my pride is nothing measured against the suffering my clan endured.”
(Name) but her lip. She decided to drop the subject and instead offered more water to the two, who took it instantly. They were all exhausted beyond relief.
“You know, I don’t think we would have made it this far without you.” Kurapika said as he handed back the canteen.
“For once I agree. Having you here watching over us has helped.”
Leorio have her a thumbs up. (Name) tried to hide her embarrassed face as she sipped her water.
“I have no noble cause.”
“Huh?” (Name) and Kurapika said in unison.
“I’m just after money.”
“Don’t lie!” Kurapika exclaimed
“I’m not lying!”
“You really believe you can buy everything with money?”
“You’re right! For the right price, you can buy not only treasures, but dreams, hearts, and even peoples lives!”
(Name) winced, looking at Leorio in shock.
“You can’t be serious Leorio…”
“Take that back!” Kurapika yelled.
“If you’re insulting the Kurt’s, I won’t forgive you.”
“Why? I’m telling the truth. If I’d had money, my friend wouldn’t have died!”
A silence fell over the group.
“Was he sick?” Kurapika asked, his tone much gentler.
“It was a treatable disease… the problem was the operation costs a fortune. I was naive! I thought I could become a doctor.”
(Name) but her lip, trying to hold back tears.
“I wanted to cure kids who have the same disease, and be able to tell them it was free of charge! The I could tell the parents too. That was my dream…”
Leorio grunted, turning his head to face the wall.
“What a joke. Turns out that to become a doctor, you need even more money! Got it? The world RUNS on money. So I want money!”
(Name) stopped in her tracks, nearly tripping down the stairs. The two managed to grab both her hands and straighten her just in time.
“(Name), are you…”
Tears ran down her cheeks. She looked at the two before pulling them into a hug. They both stiffened, before replacing and hugging her back.
“What’s that for?” Leorio asked, his cheeks flushed.
“You both seemed like you needed it.”
She released them and raced off, leaving the two to stare at the odd girl.
“She was crying… for our sake.” Kurapika muttered, picking up the pace.
“See you, Kurapika.”
“Catch you later, old timer.”
Killua and Gon had caught up to the pair and were about to pass (Name) as well.
“I’m not old! I’m a teenager, just like you guys!”
The other 4 all turned to look at him in shock.
“How are you younger than me!?” (Name) exclaimed. Leorio blinked.
“Wait, (Name), how old are you!?”
“22!”
“WHAT!?”
“NO WAY!”
20 minutes later
(Name) finally reached the end of the tunnel, coming into the light and immediately collapsing to gulp in air. She was approached by Gon and Killua, who informed her they’d been the first to reach the exit.
“Is this the Second Phase?” asked (Name) between breaths.
“No, Mr. Satotz said we still have a way to go.”
(Name) hummed her response, pulling a handkerchief from her backpack to wipe away the sweat and grime that had collected on her face. Once she cleaned herself up, she poured out the contents of her bag.
In it was a pack of gum, some granola bars, 2 empty canteens, and one still full. That was her food and she after water supply so far. The rest was a change of clothes, her dagger, a small first aid kit, and a fire starter.
“You sure came prepared.”
(Name) nodded as killua crouched beside her, opening her pack of gum and taking a piece.
“Yeah, I used to go hiking and camping with my family. And my childhood friend was very… serious when it came to it. He never got to come with us, but told me it was essential to be prepared. I wasn’t sure what tasks we’d have to do so I packed pretty light.”
She smiled, gently caressing the sheath covering her dagger. Killua squinted, trying to get a better look at the blade but (Name) packed it away.
“You boys want to have a picnic?”
The three had a small snack, breaking up two different flavored granola bars and splitting them amongst each other. (Name) my bed on her portion as they awaited their comrades arrival.
Leorio was the first to appear, collapsing with his head resting on (Name)’s lap. She waited for him to catch his breath before pushing him off with enough force for him to roll a few feet away.
“You should just lay on ladies, Leorio.” Gon said, his head leaning against (Name)’s shoulder.
“I really don’t want to hear that from you.”
(Name) tried not to laugh, but ended up chuckling. Killua watched the scene as he chewed on his gum, blowing a big bubble.
Kurapika was next to arrive. He waved to the group and sat next to (Name), taking the canteen she offered and dosing the rest.
“Sorry (Name), it’s empty.”
(Name) shrugged. “Well, they say it’s best to hydrate instead of hoarding water when you’re stranded. They say a lot of people lost in desert are found dead with lots of water still left.”
“That’s… interesting, (Name).”
The group watched the girl with interest. She wasn’t any ordinary woman. It seemed she was quite educated on things pertaining to survival.
“I’ve heard of that too! You’re so smart Miss (Name)!” Gon exclaimed.
(Name) waved her hand.
“No no, I just know enough to survive. My family was homeless for a bit when I was a teen so I learned to toughen myself up!!”
She patted her flexed arm. (Name) wasn’t really muscular, but she seemed proud of herself. Leorio nodded.
“So you’re a mountain girl like Gon?”
This caused (Name) to deflate quite a bit, shriveling up into a husk. Kurapika elbowed Leorio.
“Yeah… I’m not super strong or anything but I know some stuff. I promise I…”
She stopped herself.
“You won’t what?” asked Killua, who had been silently listening.
“I… I promise I’ll work hard. I’ll pull my weight, so please don’t leave me. I won’t be a burden at all, I swear. I just… this is the first time I’ve made some friends in a long time and…”
She paused, turning her head away.
“Are you… crying?”
“No!! Just got something in my eye is all!”
Leorio grabbed Killua’s cheeks and pulled them. “Now look what you’ve done, you’ve gone and gotten (Name) upset!”
“I don’t think he’s the only one.” Kurapika muttered, brushing his hair behind his ear. He leaned down and held (Name)’s hand.
“Listen, I don’t think a single one of us would have made it if it wasn’t for you. You’ve shared with us, and cheered us on even though we just met. We won’t abandon someone with such a kind soul so easily.”
He gave her a kind smile, which (Name) returned. It was a weak smile, but one none the less.
“Thank you, Kurapika. Sorry, I can be a crybaby.” She apologized, standing and brushing off her skirt.
“No, I understand. No one will judge you for crying. After all, being scared to lose friends is something that makes you human.”
(Name) nods. She throws her backpack on and gives them a winner smile.
“Well, let’s get closer to the front. Time to see what’s going on.”
The group disappears from sight, getting closer to the front of the crowd. Illumi watches on in disgust, his nails digging into his palms so hard they begin to bleed.
He couldn’t tell why he was so angry. Just watching these people be so familiar with you brought out a rage in him so potent it caused the plants around him to wither.
“My my, I see someone’s feeling jealous.”
Hisoka appears at Illumi’s side, his eyes focused on Illumi’s face. The assassins glare is enough to make hisoka moan.
“Jealous? I don’t feel such things as trivial as jealousy. Now if you want to keep your head, keep an eye on that girl. I can’t get closer because of Killua.”
“Touchy touchy! Of course illumi, darling.”
Hisoka slinks off, thinking to himself.
‘My, this is interesting. Never thought Illumi would be capable of jealousy. Let’s see how I can bring out the best outcome for this situation.’
He licks his lips.

Betrothed Ch. 9 - Illumi Zoldyck x Reader
Epilogue: Beauty and the Beast
Summary: Leaving the Zoldyck estate to search for your husband, what will await you once you find him?
Warnings: Angst, Violence.
Words: ~2500
Tumblr media
Story Masterlist
A/N: The plot is connected to the “Phantom Rogue” movie. In case you haven’t watched it yet (no spoilers don’t worry): The antagonist of the movie uses Nen to create puppets taking after real persons, which even possess their personaliy and memories.
All I ever wanted All I ever needed Is here in my arms Words are very Unnecessary They can only do harm
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
People tend to say you should be careful what you wish for. Apparently they were right.
At least it worked...somehow.
The last thing you knew was that you had sneaked into Alluka’s cell, wanting to free her just as much as you wanted to find Illumi. Of course her parents weren’t really fond of the idea, so you waited for an opportune moment and asked for Nanika to appear before the family could realize and act against it.
Your wish was pure and without any ill intend - so there would be no consequences.
“Please: Bring me to Illumi. I need to save him!”
So she did as she was told.
You found yourself having been teleported to an unknown place, at bright day even though it was night at the Zoldyck estate. That means you’d be at least on the other side of the world, gladly far enough away for them to quickly try and retrieve Alluka.
All you could make up in between miles of nature was an old building, almost like a chapel.
And in front of it stood Illumi.
“These eyes are strange” he thought out aloud, taking in his environment. “Everything looks so bright.”
Tumblr media
“Illu-nii-!” You put a finger in front of Alluka’s lips, signalizing her to stay quiet. Gladly you had appeared in somewhat of an hiding, so no one had noticed you up until now.
Something was off. That thing was surely not Illumi - even if it painfully appeared so.
“Gon!” a blonde girl shoutet in visible distress, “Hang in there! Gon!”
And then it dawned to you: A Nen ability.
Cloning? But why and how? It should be impossible to make such a perfect image of another person, which even seems to think and act on it’s own.
“Give gon his eyes back!” Killua demanded, but got shut down by the clone through a proper kick in his guts. “I can’t do that, Kill.”
You were too late to stop the poor Killua from running away, instead of chasing him deciding to follow the spitting image of your husband - but he had detected you earlier than you anticipated.
“Weird...” he spoke with the voice you had missed so much, staring at you with an empty glare. “You don’t look different.”
A surprised “Huh?” was all you managed to get out at his weird assumption, defendingly standing in front of Alluka.
“Those eyes make everything shine so bright. But you look just as always” the clone statet, almost as if amazed by your sheer appearance.
“You’ve always shined to me, Y/N.”
And like that, he was gone.
There wasn’t much time to think about it, since the screams of that unfamiliar girl got you down to earth again.
“Please, Gon!” she encouraged him as he tried to leave after she wrapped a bandage around his empty eyeholes. “Don’t-”
But he was already gone, chasing Killua to god knows where.
“What the hell...” you mumbled, still holding Alluka firmly in your arms.
Now the girl, which appeared like a puppet as well given a second look, turned to both of you. “Just...who are you? And where did you came from?”
“Long story.” Your answer was short, not wanting to tell anyone about Alluka’s powers. “But I’m a friend of those children. And...I need to find the man from earlier.”
“That was just one of Omokage’s puppets” she explained, pointing towards the direction Gon and Killua ran off to. “I can explain anything on the way. But we need to find them!”
It was already night when you found those two, because even with your superhuman speed you still had a child to take care off.
Seemingly, the two had resolved whatever internal trouble they were having, and much to your surprise Leorio and Kurapika had joined them as well.
“You guys...”
“Y/N?!” All of them went into a defensive position, ready to fight you in case you were a puppet as well. You weren’t mad, though. It was the only plausible reason for them to have magically appeared in here.
“Killu-nii!” Alluka cheered, approaching her brother as fast as her small legs could carry her. You wanted to prevent a reunion like that, but well...
Of course the boy broke out in tears as he remembered his sister he was forced to forget about all those years, the weight of his guilt crushing down on him once again. “I’m so sorry, Alluka...I think I was still under Illu-nii’s influence.”
Your lip began to tremble at his words, having to bite it so they wouldn’t notice that you were about to cry.
“Y/N? Is everything alright?” Damn. Of course they noticed the shift in your aura.
“Come to think of it...” Gon said, unusual sharp intellect considering his usual, blunt nature. “How come you accompany Killua’s sister? Doesn’t that mean you would’ve broken in Kurokoo mountain and fight all the Zoldycks for it?”
“I...uh-”
“Wait a second!” Good for Killua that he regains his cool so fast after having been emotional, but you wish it weren’t like that. “Isn’t that my great-grandmother’s ring? Did you stole it?!”
“Wha- no! Of course not!”
That wasn’t his greatest concern: Did you know about Alluka’s powers, and wanted to have them for yourself? Was that the reason? But how could you ever just invade the Zoldyck property and take what’s theirs without dying at their hands?
None of it made sense, no matter how much he racket his brain around the matter.
“Illu-nii gave it to Y/N for their wedding! Isn’t that cute?”
Everyone’s breath hitched at Alluka’s innocent words, and you could feel even those whose eyes were stolen widen in shock.
Before you could even defend yourself, Killua had tackled you down before sharpening his fingernails and pressing them against your neck, drawing blood.
“Why...?” Kurapika spoke the word that went through everyone’s minds, followed by Killua’s disappointed whisper “Traitor....”
“Because I love Illumi. That’s all.”
The boy then grabbed your shirt, shaking you as if to wake you up from a deep trance. “Love? LOVE?!? You know my brother, damn it!”
“Yeah!” Leorio joined the scolding. “You know very well what he forced Killua to do all those years, and that he tried to kill Gon!”
“I know very well what he’s capable of.” Against all resistance by your friends, you still remained calm and cheerful. “But he’s my husband, and I’ll fight for him until my dying breath.”
You’ve never seen Killua so furious and hurt in your life, and you could understand him:
The man responsible for all of his pain - and someone he considered a friend to fall in love with and defend him.
“Don’t give me that bullshit...” he growled as he let go off of you, tears of anger collecting in the rim of his eyes. “He obviously turned Y/N into a needleman!”
The only one to remain silent was Gon, knowing that he shouldn’t intervene until Killua was done having his rage.
Since the truth was simple, yet hard to accept for someone who had suffered under Illumi’s influence for that long.
“Don’t bully Y/N!” Alluka suddenly  blurted out, softly punching her brother’s back.
Killua then refrained from interrogating you any further, turning around to hug his sister once again. You knew the anger he let out was not just against you or your husband, but also out of wdisappointment in himself.
“I’m so sorry, Alluka...I should’ve saved you. Instead, I tried to leave my past behind and also left you alone!”
Alluka was a smart girl, at least emotionally - her mind worked different than the other Zoldycks. She gently put her hand on her brother’s hair, consoling him even though she never really understood how severe the situation at hand was:
“It’s okay! I was’t alone!” she cheered, smiling all innocent from one ear to another. “Big brother Illumi played with me all the time, together with Y/N! We had such fun!”
You smiled gently at the naive girl, knowing everyone would believe her to speak the truth. Picking her up and on your shoulders as she always wanted you to do, you waited for everyone to just process her statement.
“Alluka has spent almost every day at home with us” you proudly declared, as if you were actually her parent. “He’s a bit reserved, of course, but he loves her very much!”
“...that’s so fucked up” Leorio declared as he thought back to the creepy Gittarackur.
Killua was at loss for words, only managing to get out a consensual nod at Leorio.
“Hey!” you snickered mischievously, rumpling up his hair. “I’m your sister in law now. A little more respect!”
“Anyway” Kurapika interrupted, “Where’s Pretz?”
Seems like changing the topic was easier for the group than to keep thinking about that almost impossible constellation.
“She’s a puppet” Gon revealed as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, just for you to confirm his thesis.
“And you let Illumi steal your eyes just to follow the nen connected to them?” Giving him a head-butt, you added. “Still the idiot.”
That wasn’t fully true: Those kids sure grew since the last time you’ve met them at the Hunter Exam.
You couldn’t help but laugh at the situation, feeling like a stone was falling off your chest just by being with them.
“I’m glad to meet you again. I’ve missed you so much, guys!”
Leorio had volunteered to take care of Alluka, so she wouldn’t get dragged into the fight, while the others of you headed for Okogame’s hideout.
It was a giant church, so old that it was on the verge of breaking down.
Fitting place for a showdown, you thought.
“You don’t understand the beauty of my art!” was Okogame’s answer as Kurapika demanded for him to set his dead friend free.
“See?” he yelled dramatically as he revealed his puppets. “Pairo’s beauty together with Kurapika’s passionate eyes.”
To be honest, that wouldn’t revoke a reaction inside of you as your mind was always wandering off.
But then, he revealed his other creation.
“And Illumi’s madness, together with Gon’s pure eyes.”
“...”
Tumblr media
“Still the damsel in distress, I see.” God, even his voice was just like him. “I thought I’ve teached you better than that, Y/N.”
“Here he comes” Gon stated the obviously, but you had something to tell Killua.
"This isn’t completely him” you whispered as the puppet slowly approached you. “I can sense it: He isn’t nearly as strong as the real deal. And do you know what? He’s influenced by our memories of Illumi. They shape this puppet. That’s why he’s so scary to you, do you understand? That’s just how you depicture your brother.”
Killua knew what you really wanted to say: As you were now, you could easily end this - but Killua needed to defeat his fears himself.
The puppet came to a halt in front of his younger brother.
“Emotions are obsolete.” Ironically, it seemed that the puppet couldn’t avert his gaze from you, only making you crave your husband more. “Don’t value any of those pathetic commitments.”
“T-That’s wrong.” You were so proud of Killua, because even though he was almost frozen in place out of fear he was able to talk back to his brother. “I made friends, and it’s a great feeling.”
“You’re being silly, Kill” he declared as he pointed at you. “Do you see Y/N over there? I tried it myself. And guess what: They betrayed me. Ran away from me, scared. And now I’m all alone again.
Ouch. Even the puppet was hurt by your actions back then.
“But killing is something we can always do. It gives us power, makes us feel alive. Fear is the only reliable way of controling someone. We don’t need friends. We can manipulate people. Otherwise they will only hurt and betray you. So if they disobey: Kill them.”
“S-Shut up!” both you and Killua shoutet in unison.
Tumblr media
“Kill me, then” he whispered into Killua’s ear, “Come on. Prove that I’m wrong.”
So that’s the monster Killua saw in Illumi all those years...
“Lumi...” you couldn’t help but sob, “I didn’t want to let you down...”
“Don’t interfere” the puppet spoke, throwing several needles at you at once. “I don’t have any business with you anymore. This is a family matter.”
“I like the outfit!” you laughed it off, avoiding the needles as if it was nothing. “Feels just like sparring back then!”
Tumblr media
“You’ve always been too careless, Y/N. Because I had a soft spot for you. But I’m not going easy on you now - my order is to leave none of you alive.
A few needles pinned you to the wall, making you realize you weren’t fully concentrated.
You didn’t want to fight your husband, even though that’s not really him, so you were unknowingly holding back.
“We knew it would eventually end that way” the puppet spoke, the dark void in his eyes reminding you of the Illumi you got to know before your marriage. “Even though I’m almost sad about it.”
Your head fell in defeat, too hurt to see the love of your life suffering for so long. May as well let him hurt you a bit, to punish yourself and feel what he felt.
“I’m so sorry, Lumi.” Your answer and lack of struggle actually made him taken aback for a second, until the mission that Okogame’s nen imprinted on the puppet forced him to continue.
“Hey!” Killua yelled as he kicked another set of needles out of his hand, “We are your enemies! You said it yourself!”
Of course they had their own intentions: Getting back Kurapika’s eyes, save Pretz, overcome the trauma Illumi had put on Killua...
But you were thankful that your friends tried to avoid you having to end Illumi’s life, even if only in a metaphorical sense.
The real fight didn’t even take a whole minute, with Gon and Killua only taking a few hits until they pierced the puppet’s heart with unified strenght.
Immediately, you rushed to his side, caughting the stiff body before it hit the ground.
“Why do you stay with me, Y/N...?”
You grabbed his hand, feeling honest compassion for the artifical being as you cried out “Because you’re being loved. By me, and Alluka and even Killua! I’ll find the real you, and save you no matter what!”
“I see...” The puppet robotically touched your cheek, movements not really different from the real Illumi at the beginning from your relationship. “Maybe I was wrong about trust after all.”
A small smile played on his face as your lips hesistantly touched, while you simultaneously pressed a knife inside of him to end it all.
“Rest now” you said what Illumi had always told you when you were upset. Okogame’s curse couldn’t force his will onto the puppet now that he wasn’t able to get up ever again.
And Illumi collected the last bit of strenght as his body slowly dissolved into nen.
At least in the end he wasn’t alone - until death does you part.
“I guess dying through your hands doesn’t feel all that bad.”
