Spiral Studio's Burning Godzilla Statue - Deluxe Edition

The weather in the DMV (DC, MD, and VA) swings like a pendulum. Bright and sunny one hour, and the next, we're hit with rain followed by more swings in weather. This was a pain to shoot as it started drizzling when we assembled him. We, and I say we because this isn't a one-person setup, tried the following evening again to get some shots in as the sun went down. I got some great photos with the light-up features on full display (hoping they all worked without issue) and with the help of a 100 ft extension cord. Eventually, I got all the images I needed. The pictures speak for themselves.

My only drawback with this release is that the largest of the two boxes was too tight of a fit for the styrofoam casing. No matter what, we could only remove the statue by cutting the box open, which never happens, but it did this time. I was disappointed, considering their Spiral King Ghidorah DX was packaged immaculately with zero issues removing and repackaging him afterward. I don't know if that was just an isolated incident with me or if this has happened to other collectors.

That aside, the Burning DX is beautiful and a highlight of 2023, collecting-wise. We're only in May, but this has taken the lead in my Kaiju Collectable of the Year.

Props to Awesome Collector and Kaiju Live for bringing this titan home!

* Thankful for keeping the raging gulls away from his dorsal plates while he swims. Will wait for the moment when you banish the Monarch from his eyes.

Mothra/Mosura

* She likes your activity and perseverance. You're eager to learn anything and everything that Mothra is amused about. But your short temper . . .

* It's not that Mothra is annoyed, she's worried about you. After all, the argument gets out of control at some point.

Your impatience may be misplaced somewhere, and the Titan tries to calm you down so that there are no unnecessary problems.

* Your irritability frightens her.

Even though it's several thousand times bigger than you.

* Sometimes he presses you to his fur, hoping that you will calm down and stop driving anger to the whole world.

* Tries not to glow too much at the sight of you. Since there was a moment where you accidentally ordered her to turn off her flashlight out of annoyance, to which Mothra choked.

* Ichi is proud of your anger at other creatures. He likes the way you command them.

Ni has the same relationship to you as Ichi, but is only watching for fun.

San is a little disturbed by your behavior, believing you to resemble his brother Ichi.

*Sometimes they deliberately bring you into conflict (mostly Ni) to laugh at your face.

Although, in the absence of an instinct for self-preservation, you give them a savory response, to which the Titan begins to retreat.

* Humans and other Kaiju find both of you insufferable. Godzilla is even willing to ask people to take you away from there, as Ghidorah's yells from another argument can be heard even in his nest.

King kong

* You didn't look like Jia. Jia is calm and understanding, and you are like a tomboy, irritated about everything. He still thinks about how his little human friend made friends with you.

* Jia introduced you as a good person, but with a strong character that you just have to accept. Kong had expected anything but this. Although he appreciated the ability to command others. You'd be good at managing your own tribe, if you had one. But given the Skullsaurs that are on the run all over the island from you, humans would have joined them themselves. Your aggression was out of bounds.

* Kong sometimes worries about your recklessness. You're not someone who sits still like Jia. You're always going somewhere. And he doesn't understand what you need. And Jia, who is used to all this, just says to calm down.

* Kong has never been in conflict with you. He tries to stay on the edge of patience.

The truth is trying..

He likes that enthusiasm, but please stop. Otherwise, he'll put you in this flying object that people use.

Why is the DGA not striking? Are their working conditions that much better?

That's a great question! The short answer is no, their working conditions aren't much better. Their supposedly "historic" 2023 deal isn't very good, especially around AI protections. They just have leadership that isn't interested in striking.

Some history: During the most recent writers' strike in 2007-08, the directors' guild negotiated a deal that many saw as undercutting the WGA strike. Similar things happened in earlier strikes: the DGA takes a deal while the WGA puts their necks out to strike for a better contract. So this happening again in 2023 wasn't surprising to anyone in the industry!

Now, while the WGA and SAG-AFTRA are on strike, the directors can... twiddle their thumbs? Or hopefully join their sister unions on the picket lines even though their leadership will be twiddling their thumbs?

At least the memes are good.

Not gonna ask you about ghidzilla, I respect that.

But I wanna hear some thoughts on Rodorah, if you want.

I never care for it but boy!! with Rodorah it was just Abuse, abuse, abuse. Rodan feel ending up the fandom punchball at some point. Most of the time at least.

I was planning on making a whole rant abt this dunno if I will cuz I have testing today n I am TIRED and I no no wanna… buuuut.

Rodorah is a decently good ship on paper, it can be interesting and geniunely great if anyone bothers to portray it correctly, spoiler! no one does that.

Every single time I see anything Rodorah related it’s literally just Ghidorah harassing Rodan and Rodan cannot do ANYTHING about it because of the physical and emotional (?) power imbalance, r Ghidorah constantly oversteps Rodan’s boundaries and the writer does nothing to address that Ghidorah’s relationship with Rodan is toxic. I’m all for toxic yaoi, but this is just EUGHHHHH. It’s literally the Slave x Master trope is THATS disgusting. Now if their relationship was something that started off toxic, the writer addressed Ghidorah’s issues and they were properly dealt with, I would be fine with it, but NO ONE DOES THAT. It was always, “Ghidorah harasses Rodan until he gets what he wants, Rodan is a crybaby about it waa” OOO AAA STFU FUCK. It’s something that geniunely pisses me off.

ESPECIALLY when they make it seem like Rodan cannot defend himself and make him a “Bitch” I HATE BITCH RODAN. Rodan is strong in his own way, he handled himself pretty well against Ghidorah and Mothra, and while he lost both battles he still picked up a damn good fight. Rodan is still a strong kaiju and seeing him get reduced to being a “bitch” gets on my actually fucking nerves, and this is the most frequent with fucking RODORAH. Where Rodan is seen as nothing but a bottom bitch who can’t fight back.

When the scientist approached you looking beyond frightened, you understood what the day was going to be like in an instant. Ghidorah, your mate, was In A Mood. A pretty violent one considering the storm outside. You heave a great sigh and finish putting your jewelry on as the bravest of the three scientist began to babble.

You weren't really listening to him, rather, you were cursing the stupid rule Ghidorah put into place. No less than six pieces of precious stones and metals on you at all times. never mind the sounds grated your nerves, the hair pins gave you headaches, and the earrings made your ears itch. You knew better than to challenge him though, especially at a time like this, you'd already been the cause of his irritation today.

You didn't want to have breakfast with him. After last night, pushing you into his pull 'accidentally' and ruining your favorite clothes, you didn't feel like seeing him. But duty called, and sometimes, duty meant that you made up faster than you were ready to.

Without saying a word to the blubbering, faceless idiot trying to appeal to your endless mercy, you float out of the room towards the roaring of the dragon that called you mate.

He was in the dining hall, obviously, thrashing about, gnashing those big pearly whites. "That's enough," You say calmly, and he instantly stills. Kevin, the sweetest head, immediately lowers towards you, he's quickly pushed out of the way by Ni, the most aggressive of the trio. Ichi was going to join in but you were still so mad about last night you snapped, "Enough!" the heads quiet down and look at you.

Had you been any other human, you would've been dragon feed by now, but you were Ghidorah's mate, his heart, his soul, you had certain liberties. "I'm at my wit's end," You begin, "Every time I buy something nice, or do something for myself, you ruin it. I won't have it anymore." He makes a sound that seems apologetic, but you aren't so sure. "I mean it," You tell him wanting to drive the point home, "You don't treat the person you love this way, you don't make them mad just to laugh at them. It's cruel." He's looking properly chastised now. "I won't tolerate your behavior anymore, you're a king, an adult, and my love, start acting like it." You hold eye contact with each head until they look away.

Eventually all the heads nod in understanding. "Thank you," You say, relieved it all went so well. At any moment he could decide you're more trouble than you worth and kill you, but for now, at least, you had some power. Kevin moves in for a kiss but you turn away from him and sit at the table. He looks hurt, as did the other two, but you'd make it up to them later. You did love them after all.

Just a thought: maybe the reason Godzilla was acting so uncharacteristically aggressive in GxK was because he is literally millions of years old, and the whole timeline of the Monsterverse basically took place over the span of ten years or so. Which, to him, probably feels like a few minutes.

So within the span of a few kaiju-minutes, he:

> had to fight his species' natural predators which very nearly turned him into a host for their eggs and overrun the world

> faced off against his ancient nemesis frozen in Antarctica, who ended up nearly killing him *twice* and almost ended all life on earth

> saw Mothra get killed right before his eyes, and even if he knows she can reincarnate she still doesn't reappear for quite a long time while all the current mayhem is happening

> was forced to deal with a Great Ape (a member of a species responsible for his own kind's extinction) being taken off Skull Island and brought into his territory while at the same time Ghidorah's telepathic signal had suddenly come back, then getting beat to within an inch of his life by a technologically superior machine *specifically* designed to kill him

> has to deal with the other titans constantly usurping his power while he tries to keep the peace by any means necessary with Scylla being the last straw

> detects the return of even more Great Apes awakening a dangerous power all the way from the Hollow Earth and is forced to prepare himself by stockpiling on energy and Tiamat wasn't giving up her stash without a fight

> Kong suddenly returning to the surface world, while Godzilla is preparing for a Great Ape invasion, and Godzilla has no context about Kong's intentions or if he has anything to do with the signals coming from the Hollow Earth

So yeah, I don't think I can really blame him for acting so vicious in GxK. Dude's had a very stressful time in such a relatively short timescale, as is clear by him *always* just trying to get back to sleep any chance he gets. We all saw the whole "tired old man" vibe he had back in 2014, and while he's become more action-oriented since then he is ultimately just desperate for a much-needed break he just can't get. And given Skar King and his previous actions, it's understandable he doesn't trust Kong right away. He takes the threat the Great Apes pose *very seriously*, and he has no idea if Kong had anything to do with it. He got a threatening signal from them from the Hollow Earth and suddenly one of them comes out of the Hollow Earth and directly challenges him? What else was he going to assume?

At the very least, he's open to some reasonable talking-to from Mothra. After she arrives to clear things up, he never again after shows any hostility to Kong because "hey, if Mothra trusts him, then I have every reason to do so as well, even if I personally don't like him."

And maybe he's finally calmed down because he's just glad to see her again. :3

Now this makes perfect sense because if maintaining balance is basically his job, he's going through the equivalent of the most draining and stressful full-time week at work imaginable with barely a moment to breathe. I've had to work the entire Christmas weekend at my job, and if that happened to me again I'd be just as pissed as Godzilla was.

Kaiju Week in Review (September 3-9, 2023)

I was a bit nervous about GAMERA -Rebirth-; the animation looked dodgy and Netflix has a shaky track record with kaiju shows. I'm pleased to report this is the best entry in the genre that they've put their name on. Good characters, great action (brutal as always), and actual episodic storytelling that effortlessly weaves in elements from the Showa films beyond all the returning kaiju. Watch it immediately.

Tie-ins abound for GAMERA -Rebirth-: a two-part novelization, a manga adaptation, and a prequel manga that sheds some light on [UNBELIEVABLY MASSIVE SPOILERS]. That prequel manga (GAMERA -Rebirth- code thyrsos) is being published online for free in both Japanese and English. You can read the first chapter here.

In unofficial translation news, English subtitles for GAMERA.1999 (1999) and yokaipedia (2022) are now available. The former is Hideaki Anno's making-of documentary for Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris; the latter is a fun, child-friendly fantasy from Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki with a big ol' centipede-dragon at the end. (It's also maybe the first Japanese kaiju film I've ever seen with a major Black character.) I haven't gotten to GAMERA.1999 yet, though from scrubbing through it, it seems like a lot of dialogue was just ignored by the translator. Shame, as that's one I've wanted for a long time.

We have a teaser for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, as well as a premiere date for the first two (out of ten) episodes: November 17. (I am being showered with Media for my 30th birthday.) The big news from this trailer is that John Goodman is reprising his role as Bill Randa from Kong: Skull Island. I assume that's going to be through flashbacks and old recordings only, since he was eaten by a Skullcrawler in that one. We also catch glimpses of two new creatures, a dragon and a crab from what I can tell. The latter looks to be fighting a Mother Longlegs.

Fandango and AMC have added mostly-empty listings for Godzilla 2000 on November 1. Fathom Events screened Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla on November 3 last year; despite randomly showing Tokyo SOS back in March, I gather they're making a tradition out of Godzilla Day. Note that the listed runtime is longer than the film itself. Predictions for the program: another message from Keiji Ota, the 2022 Godzilla vs. Gigan short, and the Japanese version of G2K. Interesting that they're running the last Toho Godzilla film to receive a wide release in the U.S. exactly a month before Godzilla Minus One has a wide release of its own here.

Gamera isn't a meta-defining Godzilla Battle Line unit... but he's Gamera in a Godzilla game, so I've been using him in every match since I unlocked him. He's gearing towards demolishing flying units, with fireballs that deal more damage against them and knock them back. A pity that he's arriving well after those units were at their most dominant.

Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #3 still isn't giving me much to write home about, but the kaiju cult creeping to the forefront intrigues. Also cool to see Ebirah in a starring role.

Marubeni, one of Japan's biggest general trading companies, put out a bizarre commercial featuring samurai, zombies, a meteor, and a refurbished GMK King Ghidorah. The ad now has English subtitles, and you can watch a Ghidorah-centric behind-the-scenes video here.

I cannot believe I have more Cleopatra Entertainment fuckery to report on with regards to their Shin Ultraman releases, but they're truly trying to take the "Worst Film Company of 2023" title from the members of the AMPTP. Their third attempt at a barebones disc is starting to reach customers... but the ones who already received the initial replacement disc are being told no more will be sent. @starestream is trying to figure out if they'll be selling the third edition on their site, since it seems buying it anywhere else is a gamble. (Physically, the third edition looks almost the same as the first two, set apart only by the "SUBTITLED" text on the disc.) Either way, it's another blow to a movie that truly doesn't deserve this.
