WoL Think Thonkers
#1 Where is your Warrior of Light from? What was their home like growing up and what set them out on their journey?
Tumblr media
Tsuna was born sometime in 1545, 7 years before the fall of Doma. Once she was old enough, she often helped her mother in the shop due to her father being away on sea voyages more often than not.
Her mother was kind but strict-- guilty of imparting onto her child the ideals of her people who shunned the outside world, and avoided conflict at all cost. Tsuna grew up on her bedtime stories of the world beneath the waves, and of the Ruby Prince-- a half-Au Ra man who was born without scales. Their village in Yanxia was fond of her mother, and helped her raise her only child.
When Doma fell, and the Court was dissolved, its servants and the surrounding villagers were displaced or taken as conscripts.
Left without a mother, and her father missing, Tsuna was smuggled into Kugane by a family friend where she would be taken in by an Okiya inside the Sanjo Hanamachi as a perceived orphan. For thirteen years she trained as a maiko, and graduated at twenty.
She threw it all away after being asked to entertain a couple of Garlean soldiers from the embassy. Sometime during the evening, she received her first Echo-- flashing back to the day her mother was taken away. The same soldier who broke into their village home was sitting next to her.
She killed him in a crime of passion. The second life she took was self-defense. The crime forced her to flee or face persecution, (not to mention the political implications of a citizen of the neutral facing Kugane committing a crime against the embassy) and so she fled onto the first boat that would take her-- to Eorzea.

— "What the fuck." You started at the merman who wriggled around for space. His eyes looked at you in fear as he saw you, before a blush had spread across his face.
Up until 30 seconds ago, you had lived a normal life, well, except for the obscene amount of work you were stressed out with. So you hopped on the boat your parents had gifted you some years ago and sailed into the sea. The feel of the ocean breeze hitting your face was a familiar sensation to you.
This was because your parents were fishermen and loved to eat seafood, and naturally, you had gravitated towards seafood, but with prices these days and your never-ending workload, it didn't allow you to do anything without setting you back on your tight deadlines. Until today.
You had gotten a whole week of paid vacation because a coworker was threatening to bring them to court for a long list of harassment. So they gave the people who worked the most a one week paid vacation. Though, to her, it wasn't enough, so you're getting a paid vacation week while they are still going to get sued. Whatever, its their fault either way.
Anyways, how did you reel in a merman that shouldn't even exist? Frankly, you don't know either. You had accidentally started to daydream, which turned into you not realizing something was caught, so instinctively, you were able to reel in a merman.
"H-huuuumann?" His deep moss green eyes stared at up at you with interest whilst you nearly got blinded by the shimmering gleem of his scales that were scattered across his cheeks. He stopped his advancements towards you until it was difficult to hold up his neck to see you.
"Erm... sorry for catching you, I was daydreaming. I'll unhook the fish hook attached to you..." You apologized and went down to unhook him, only for him to pull down your pants and underwear down, making you fall on the bench below you and stuffing his face in your genitals.
"Hey! W-what are you doing?" You pushed his face away, to which he pouted to. He sat there for a while as you tried to push him off the boat, to no avail.
"I... Accceppt thhis marrriaage!" He excitedly said as he tugged on your pants to gently pull it off again, but you held on tightly to your pants.
"What marriage? I didn't propose to you?" You evaded from his pulling hands in confusion.
"Whennn youuu reeeeledd mmeee inn dummmyy!" He slurred his words once more. "Shtop! I waant too tasstte you firrst beeforrre you tassteeee mee!" He huffed before his nails turned into sharp claws that shreaded your pants, then pulled down your underwear again and happily stuffing his face and licking your crotch with his tongue that felt rough.
Once more, you tried to move away but only ended up moaning at the feeling. Your face was slightly hot as you looked away but was swiftly pulled back in for a kiss, tasting your own fluids.
"Ah... finally... now it's your turn, cutie pie. We have to go to my hometown to get married <3"
"WHAT!?!? Firstly, no! Secondly, i will drown!"
"... Who said you can say no? When you reeled me, it was akin to a marriage proposal. Also, that's why you suck my dick and kiss me <333"
"WHAT--"

Abandoned Mansion
Pairing: JJ Maybank x kook!reader
Warnings: fem!reader, slight mentions of abuse, "kidnapping", readers dad was pouge turned kook like kiaras, readers dad is an asshole, snarky jj, slight john b x reader, italics are flashbacks, 7.4k words
A/N: (spoilers-ish) i got the inso from season 3, where JJ saves Kie from Kitty Hawk but with a slight enemies to lovers feel. this is set before s1 even happens. hope you like it, and I'm posting a prompts list so you guys can request!
__________________________________________________________
JJ and John B were out of Figure 8, working their asses off for some cash. John B luckily was able to score working for the Cameron's doing boat maintenance, while JJ got stuck doing yard work for the Y/L/N's.
JJ hated most kooks out on this island, but he particularly didn't want to be here. Especially when the Y/L/N's daughter would come around. She was Kie's only kook friend, and Kie would always try to convince the pouges to letting her come around sometime but JJ's always been hellbent against it.
He wiped the sweat off his forehead with the back of his hand and continued mowing the lawn for the last stretch of grass.
"Hey, Maybank!" He heard your dad's voice call out to him. JJ sighed, turning off the motor before looking up to find him on the upper part of big fancy two story house.
"What can I do for ya, sir?"
The man didn't laugh at JJ's obviously fake greeting. "After you get done with the lawn, you're free to go. I gotta take Y/N to the Wreck."
JJ eagerly nodded, quickly turning the motor back on so he could get done as quickly as possible.
Once he had finished, the only thing left to do was put the lawn mower back into the Y/L/N's garage then head out. He thought, why would they even own a lawn mower if they'd never even think about touching it? God, he hated kooks -
"JJ, right?"
He swirled around, seeing Y/n stand in the doorway that connected the garage and the rest of the house. With a slight frown he answered, but turned back to his task of wrapping the cord together in a semi-neat fashion. "Uh, yeah."
Y/n pursed her lips, and rocked to the back of her heels. Her friend Kie always told her how much she loved the pouges, and how they'd all get along if they became friends. But she also knew how much pouges and kooks hated each other, not that she did at all. She thought the entire 'war' on the island was pointless and stupid.
"I'm Y/n." You continued to try to entice him in a conversation. "Kie's told me a lot about you and your friends."
He huffed and threw the cords next to the lawn mower. "Yeah well I haven't heard much about you. Now if you don't mind, I gotta get out of this hell."
She crossed her arms and didn't know what took over her as she followed him out of the garage and towards his bike he quickly hopped on. "I'm just trying to be nice, you can't even have a conversation with me?"
"I'm sorry this is the first time you're not getting your way, princess." He grinned, revving his engine once.
"Y/N! Come here now." Her dad yelled out, standing by their newest car a few feet away from them, narrowing his eyes at the scene of the pouge talking to his daughter.
Y/n looked to her dad and opened her mouth to give an excuse but was cut off by JJ revving his engine again. He wasted no time in staying on figure 8 any longer, and quickly drove out of their driveway and headed back to the cut.
"What were you doing with that pouge, Y/n?"
She scoffed under her breath, watching after the beautiful blonde boy who was almost out of her sight by now. She tucked her hair behind her ears, smacking her lips together and finally pulled herself to get into her dad's car. "Nothing.."
---
"I'm telling you Kie, I think you're wrong."
Kiara ignored her friend as she wiped down the counter at the front of the Wreck. Y/n just finished telling her about the interaction she just had with Kiara's quote on quote, "always a fun time best friend."
"He doesn't like kooks. It'll take some getting used to." She shrugged. Suddenly her head snapped up to look at her girl friend with wide eyes.
"What?" Y/n froze holding the chip she was about to eat close to her mouth but got completely freaked out by Kaira's spaz antics.
"Come to the chateau with me tonight."
"What?!" She practically screeched. Hanging out with the pouges seemed like the worst idea after how JJ and her so nicely got along earlier today. "I'm not doing that."
Kie smiled wide, not taking no for an answer. "You have to, come on. It'll be fun were going out on the HMS, and I know John B and Pope have been wanting to meet you forever." She saw Y/n still not budging. "JJ will be fine, I promise. If not, just ignore him that's what I do."
The two girls laughed, and Y/n squinted her eyes at her pretty best friend. "Okay, okay. I'll come."
"Great, John B is picking us up in 10 minutes."
"You knew I'd cave didn't you?"
"I knew no such thing."
-
The two girls walked onto the dock, seeing the HMS Pouge pull up to the side of the dock.
"You've got to be kidding me." JJ groaned, throwing his head back, looking at his two best friends with a hateful look. "Why is she coming?"
"Be nice, JJ." Pope spoke up, standing up as the boat got nearer to picking the two girls up.
"Hey, ladies." John B smiled, slowing the boat down next to them.
"Hi, boys." Kie called out, holding up a cooler no doubt filled with drinks and some of their favorite snacks.
Y/n smiled at the boys, "Hey, I'm Y/n."
Pope helped Kie in, while John B held his hand out for Y/n to take and come aboard. JJ sneered at the sight of it, because that's exactly what they needed. Another kook.
John B smiled, taking in all of Y/n's beauty. "So I've heard. I'm John B, this is Pope." He gestured to Pope who gave a small wave. "And that's JJ. Don't mind him."
Y/n chuckled seeing JJ's clear distaste of her being there. She took a seat next to Kie, who sat beside Pope now with JJ on the other side of him. John B got behind the wheel once again and took off towards the marsh where they all liked to hang out.
The four out of five got into some small talk while JJ pouted, lighting up a joint to take the edge off.
John B finally found a spot he deemed good enough and him and Pope lowered the anchor. "JJ, don't hog that." Kie reached out her hand with a pointed look, waiting for him to pass it to her.
He cocked his head to the side, looking at her before landing on the other girl with a glare. "Well, wouldn't want goody two shoes to get secondhand high, she might freak out and ruin the night."
Y/n sent a glare right back at him. "I've smoked before."
He gave her an unimpressed, "hmm." But reached over and passed it to Kie before he had both of them hating him for the rest of the night.
"Okay," John B clapped his hand, plopping down to sit close to Y/n. "What'd you girls bring?"
Y/n grabbed the cooler, opening the lid to show all the beer they packed. She took a couple out, handing one to John B and the other she extended out to JJ. Like a peace offering.
He stared at it, leaning forward with a hand outstretched. A smile started to form on her face, that is until he quickly reached into the cooler and got a different bottle for himself and left the one she held ignored. She moved her jaw to the side, trying to boil down the irritation he kept filling her with.
She sighed and leaned back into her seat next to John B, and twisted the cap open before taking a swig.
"Ignore him," John B whispered to her in her ear causing Y/n to smile. "He just needs some warming up to."
JJ swallowed the beer and thought it must've been the bitter alcohol that caused the sick feeling in his stomach as he saw you and John B practically all cuddled up together. So you think you can just come here and steal all his friends, no way was he letting that happen.
And unfortunately for him, you came around practically everyday that they all got together and became close to everyone but him. Unfortunately for you, his comments and attitude seemed to only worsen the longer you stuck around.
It's nearing towards the end of summer, and the pouges have brought you on so many different crazy adventures you've never experienced before. Like sneaking into private property, stealing alcohol, and just finally being free. It wasn't like your old, fake kook friends who only cared about where they were seen, what they were wearing and how much money they could spend. And that just wasn't you, and that's why once you met Kiara it was like having a first actual friend.
The two of you girls got closer, now that she wasn't having to separate her time with the pouges and you. She was the only one you confided in your attraction and crush on JJ.
"Do you think JJ hates me?" Y/n asked, brushing her hair and looking into her vanity mirror. Kie sat up from your bed, looking at the girl through the mirror.
"No. I just think it takes a long time to get through the walls he puts up. There's only three people JJ cares about, so just give it some time and he'll be your best friend."
Y/n only hummed, not impressed by the girl's answer. She kept looking at her hair in the mirror, and didn't see Kiara's interest peak and scoot closer.
"Why?" She asked Y/n, who only shrugged at the question. "Do you like JJ?"
"What?!" She snapped her head around to look at Kie, dropping her hairbrush on the ground. Kie smacked a hand over her mouth, trying to not let the gasp escape her mouth.
"No way! You so like him."
"No, nu-uh. I don't like JJ." She waved Kie off and turned back towards the mirror. She looked at her reflection with a frown, picking out any flaw she could in her mind. "I mean.. how could I like someone who doesn't even want me around?"
"Oh, girl.." Kie stood up and wrapped her arms around the girl who's sadness was coming off her in waves. "Trust me, he's lucky to even be near you."
You and Pope got along too, since you both were always focused in school and enjoyed reading. John B was your new best friend, you never had a bad time with him and he always made you feel welcomed.
You'd even have them come to some of your 'kook activities,' as JJ would say. But all it really was is that they got to hang out in your gigantic pool and hot tub when your parents weren't around, got to go to the country club without being immediately kicked out, and being gifted gifts.
That in it's entirety irked JJ, he didn't need your handouts and you weren't going to buy his friendship like you did the others.
But everyone else knew that you weren't doing that, just that you'd show your appreciation in small gifts like a book you and Pope had been talking about, or groceries for John B or even a matching bracelet with Kie.
Y/n parked beside the twinkie and began to grab the bags of groceries she had in her car from her trip to the store. She held 3 bags in one hand and a case of beer in the other. Y/n knocked on the from door, since she had no ways of opening it herself.
JJ ignored the knock and continued smoking on the couch. John B smacked the side of his head as he walked towards the front door. He opened it with a wide smile, "Y/n, hey!"
She giggled as he gave her big hug and took the three bags she was holding. "Hey, John B. I picked up some groceries on my way here since we've been eating everything here."
The two walked towards the kitchen to set everything down. JJ watched with a frown as John B threw an arm around her shoulder and gave a kiss to the side of her head. "Thank you, Y/n. I really appreciate it."
-
"Pope!" JJ heard your voice and the fast footsteps as you ran up to the pair of them who were in Pope's boat. They were making grocery runs out on figure 8. "Here, I forgot to give you this last night."
"Oh my god, thank you! Where'd you even find this, it wasn't even in Charleston." Pope wrapped his arms around the middle of her back and gave tight squeeze.
She laughed, "I'm not giving up my tricks."
"What were you guys doing last night?" JJ asked, crossing his arms as he watched Y/n's face change from happy to slightly worried.
"Oh, well I had Pope, John B and Kie come over last night. I figured you wouldn't want to come, plus they said you had a family thing - "
"Yeah." JJ huffed, feeling the bruises on his ribs. He went home and to just his luck his dad was awake and angry like usual. "Well, we have a job to do, so."
"Right." Y/n nodded and slowly backed away from their boat. "I'll see you guys later, then."
-
"Where'd you get that bracelet, Kie?" JJ asked as they were cleaning up around the chateau. This obviously wasn't anything JJ wanted to do, but it had been getting bad and Kie already scolded all of the guys for not doing anything for so long. John B and Pope were cleaning in other areas of the house, while they tackled the living room.
Kie smiled, "Y/n got me it. She has a matching blue one." She twisted it gently around her wrist, the turtle charm dangling and the green yarn designs effortlessly beautiful.
"Oh.. it's nice." He murmured, tossing an old red solo cup in the bag of trash they were filling up.
"I think she got you something too." Kie mentioned, trying to pry into how JJ was feeling. She knew you had a crush on him, but she knew how well JJ was at hiding how he felt. And that usually came out with him either making jokes or being rude.
"Really?" He asked without a beat. Kie's lips curved upwards, gotcha. On the counter he saw a photo of the five you that you took on your polaroid a few weeks ago, you all wore big smiles after a day on the boat. You and Kie posed next to each other, the three guys making goofy peace signs or sticking their tongues out behind them.
"Yeah, I think she mentioned some type of pocket knife or tool you needed for your bike."
He softly smiled, his eyes not leaving the picture just yet. He remembered telling everyone about how his bike broke down and that he lost his favorite pocket knife after a run in with some kooks in the twinkie about a week before that polaroid was taken. "I didn't think she'd remember that."
JJ snapped out of his thoughts when he heard the four of you bust out laughing. How could they be so okay with you coming in and ruining the dynamic of the group? He also hated how well you got along with just about anyone, he wanted to make sure that he'd be the exception if no one else was going to.
"What's so funny?" He grumbled, kicking an empty beer can before resting against the outside of the chateau where everyone was lounging at.
Their laughter quieted down and Y/n just kept her gaze on her feet once JJ entered their conversation. John B nudged her with his shoulder, still laughing as he looked at her shyness. "Little miss Y/L/N here took Topper down earlier on the beach."
His eyebrows raised, "What are you talking about?"
Pope excitedly began to tell the story, "Okay, so I headed over to figure 8 to pick Y/n up, right? And so when we were heading back to the HMS when Topper started yelling at me for being over there. A-and then he started coming at Y/n saying how she's a turned pouge and then - "
"Well, that's dumb." JJ started to laugh, thinking that's the reason why they'd be laughing. "Y/n's not a pouge."
Silence.
Y/n frowned, subconsciously slumping more in her seat from the awkwardness. "Dude," Pope sighed.
Kie looked at him pissed off, "What's your issue, JJ?" John B shook his head as he looked off into his backyard adding, "Don't you think she's earned that after what she's gone through and done with us?"
"No." JJ bluntly said not even sparing at the girl who sat in the chair. "She's a kook, she'll always be a kook."
Y/n rolled her eyes, looking down at her phone. It showed a few text messages from her parents that were sent to her hours ago, her mom saying, 'please come home soon,' and her dad's saying 'you know what we talked about. home now, last chance.'
"You know what, since I'm such a kook why don't I just leave?" She hopped out of her chair and faced JJ with a sour face. He didn't show his surprise of her stepping up to him, and just smiled.
"Great, I'll show you the door."
She scoffed, "God, JJ. You've made it so hard to be your friend, I give up you win. You won't have to deal with me crashing your fun anymore," she turned to the other three who wore worried expressions. "I'm sorry guys, but I have to go home. I'll call you." She turned away, giving JJ one more look before rushing off to hear car to head home in order to spare herself another fight with her father for being friends with pouges.
The last time she got into a fight with her parents, JJ was with her. It was weird for JJ to be there, because if anyone was going to represent who her friends were, Y/n would much rather have had Kie and Pope or John B be there. But JJ was the only one available, and didn't say no.
"You said I'd listen to you, and then you'd listen to me." Y/n reminded her dad as the two teenagers stepped inside and sat in the living room. She saw his pissed off face when she didn't come alone.
JJ gave him a head nod. This already wasn't going well. Y/n's dad had wanted to have a sit down about what she was doing wither her life, but they all knew it was going to be him telling her she couldn't hang around pouges so she brought back up to change his mind.
They'd been going back in forth until her dad had enough. "Listen, I think you've been led stray away, Y/n. And you JJ," He looked towards JJ, remember months ago when he first saw Y/n and JJ.
"Y/D/N.." Your mom warned, never really speaking until now which caused Y/n to roll her eyes. Her mom always let her dad take the reigns on anything and never thought for herself.
"No, no, no. Lets get this all out in the open." He walked towards JJ who had made his way into the open kitchen whereas the girls of the house still sat in the living room. "You need to understand that I do get it."
JJ faked a laugh, "Sure you do."
"You hear me? I do. I like you JJ, and I bet you're fucking fun to hang out with and go down to the break with because I was once just like you, bro. I didn't think that anything mattered, and that I could make any bullshit story and these stupid kooks would believe it. But then I learned about hard work, about what really mattered."
JJ kept his sights on the glossy, fancy marble table as her dad talked down to him.
"All I care about - all I care about.. is my daughter. That's it. And all I know, is that she was a lot better off before she met you and your friends."
"Dad, I was never better off." Y/n cried, getting up from the couch and walking over to the two of them.
"Yes you were." He interrupted his daughter. Y/n's mom walked over, scared to see what else would happen.
"I was never better off!" Y/n repeated with a stern voice. "I was miserable."
"Miserable? Look at your life now." He laughed at her. "No, no. NO!" He snapped at his wife who was trying to get him to stop. "These pouges, have ruined my daughters life." He spat out the word pouge as he looked at JJ like he was dirt.
JJ rolled his shoulders back, shifting his gaze to see Y/n's distraught form, and decided to take the heat. "Didn't mean any disrespect, Mr. Y/L/N. Y'all have a good day."
JJ walked backwards away from Y/n's dad, and made his way to his bike outside.
"What are you doing?" Y/n pleaded her father to stop, she knew JJ barely liked her as is and after this she knew he never would.
"I'm protecting my daughter! Everybody says it, he's just life his father. He's a liar and a thief."
"No, he's not!" Y/n yelled throwing her hands up in frustration. JJ, not yet outside, stopped to listen to what else the kooks had to say about him. "He's nothing like his dad. You don't know him, they're nothing alike."
JJ heard your footsteps come closer and quickly stepped out of the front door before you did. "Where are you going?" Your father yelled after you.
"I listened to you, y'all were supposed to listen to me.. it's not fair." Y/n kept walking away, leaving her parents yelling at her while she ran after JJ.
"JJ, I'm sorry." She breathed out, watching him only stare in front of him and not look at her. "I-I didn't know he was going to react like that. You didn't deserve that."
JJ already started his bike but still waited for Y/n. "It's whatever. I already know what they think of me." He waited until Y/n hopped on behind him, and wrapped her arms around him.
He looked behind her with a soft gaze, "You ready?"
Y/n's cheeks reddened by how close they were, and nodded with a shy smile. "Yeah."
"JJ!" "Dude, go talk to her!" "You're an idiot."
JJ waved them off and just took a seat in the chair you were just in. His mind was heavy with memories and thoughts swirling around. "What? You're telling me she understands what it's like to be a pouge? As if she has had to deal with the same things as us in her life?!"
John B picked up a random wadded up shirt he found near him and threw it at JJ's face. "Dude, do you know much shit she's had to deal with her parents over this summer because of us?"
"Yeah, her parents and mine were talking about wilderness camps. It took mine years in order to get there, but it took her's only a couple of months." Kie glared at the sun, hating how much their parents despised their friends.
JJ hesitated to speak, he did know how you were being affected by spending all her time on the cut with them. But still, a disappointed parent in exchange for being rich? He knew her parents were looking down on them anyways, and whose to say that Y/n wouldn't do the same eventually?
"And why do you hate Y/n so much anyways? She's just like Kie, she was a kook before too." Pope pointed out causing JJ's leg to start bouncing.
"It's not like that, god." He jumped from the chair and faced all of them. "Y'all don't see it like I do, okay? I see how she really is - "
"What, a good person? She's nothing like a kook, JJ and deep down you know that. She's always been there when any of us need anything, and stood up for us with Rafe and all of them so many times." Kie defended you, she's watched this go on for too long and she couldn't risk your guys' friendship over it.
JJ just shook his head, unable to wrap his head around what she was getting at. "Nah, you heard it for yourself she's going back to figure 8 while we stay here, because we have each other! She's not apart of that."
The three pouges looked at each other, it seemed more like he was trying to convince himself that he was right and to ignore anything they might've said. So they dropped it, I mean you did say that you'd call them later.
---
Y/n parked her car in the drive way with a huff. She's so exhausted over JJ. Throughout the four months she'd been hanging out with the pouges, she hoped that he'd give her a chance and they'd become at least cordial with each other. But she couldn't keep dealing with him, no matter how much she did like him or being friends with the pouges.
She wasn't necessarily thinking about stop being friends with everyone, but.. JJ was their friend first, and she wasn't going to make them choose between them that wouldn't be fair.
She stepped out of her car, and shut the door behind her. She noticed another van park on the other side of the street with the logo, 'Kitty Hawk' and a rainbow. A man stepped out of the car, keeping his trained eye on her.
"Hey, Y/n." She started walking towards the house and the strange man kept following her. "Hey, come back. I'm not going to hurt you. I just want to talk to you."
"Uh, no I'm okay." She said back to him. She hurried up the stairs to get to the front door, whispering to herself, "What the fuck."
She finally got to the top of the stairs and twisted the doorknob. Only it was locked. Y/n's heart dropped, looking back to see the creepy man still walking towards her. She yanked on the doorknob, pounding on the door. "Mom! Dad!"
The door opened, but it was another strange man wearing a shirt with the same logo from the car.
Y/n gasped taking a step back. "Who are you?"
"Look, this can go one of two ways." The man said, taking a couple steps toward her.
"No, no, no, no." Her heart was racing. She never thought her parents would really send her away. She couldn't believe this was happening to her.
"Y/n, I'm sorry." Her mom stepped into view, her dad behind her. "We're sending you away for a while. They say Kitty Hawk is the best."
Y/n took another step and knocked into the first man she saw. He held his arms out so she couldn't run away. "Wait, wai - "
"Okay?" Her mom asked, but it wasn't like Y/n was given a choice. "We just need to try this, okay? We're just trying to help you."
The two men started to grab her arms and lead her to the van. Y/n's breathing was ragged and looked at her parents with crazy wide eyes. She just kept repeating, "no, no, no." Hoping this wasn't actually happening. "Mom, no. Dad!"
She tried yanking her arms away from the men, even trying to hit them to get off her but they were much stronger. "No, I can't do this!"
"We are trying to help you." Her mom tried to reason with her, but even she knew this was insane. "This isn't forever."
"You can't send me to camp wilderness, kookoo's nest!" The men kept dragging her, even down the stairs as her parents followed.
"They're not gonna hurt you. They're good people. They're going to help you out, don't fight it." Her dad warned her, stopping his wife from going further down the stairs.
As the three went down the stairs, Y/n whipped her head around to look at her parents. Tears started streaming down her face, "But I said - I said I didn't want to go!" She reached out grabbing ahold of the fence in from of their house. The two men tried yanking her off but she wasn't going without a fight. "I don't want to! You can't do this!"
They finally pried her off the fence and continued carrying her out to the back of the van. "No!" She sobbed, as they kept leading her further away from her house. "Dad! Mom!" She screamed watching as they stood at the top of the stairs doing nothing from her being taken away.
The men threw her in the van and immediately shut the door so she couldn't try to escape. There was no door handle from the inside so she began to bang her fists on the window. Still screaming and crying for her mom and dad.
---
That "I'll call you later," never happened. The whole night it was complete radio silent on your end, no matter how many calls or texts they left you. They all just kinda figured you wanted your space.
It wasn't until the next day of not hearing anything that they were all starting to be concerned. Especially since they had all agreed to go surfing in the morning and then fishing and drinking.
It was about 10 in the morning and the four of them were all packed in the twinkie for the day ahead of them, the only thing missing was you.
"Has she said anything?" Pope asked the group, a small frown on his face.
John B and Kie shook their heads. "I wonder why." Kie snapped looking at JJ who had been more quiet than usual since you left.
He's been trapped in his thoughts, and the pouges had a point. He really was hating on you for no reason. Well, not no reason but not one he wanted to admit to anyone. At first, yeah strictly because you were a kook. And that was valid. Until it wasn't and you were actually a genuine person to be around. You were funny, smart, and beautiful. And JJ hated that.
"She's seriously coming again?"
"Yes, JJ. We all like her so she's invited."
"Does she even know how to surf? Or are you gonna teach her as an excuse to get near her?" JJ grimaced at the thought, if John B and Y/n were to get together then surely Pope will find the balls to ask out Kie and he'd be left out for sure.
"Yes, that's exactly my plan." John B pushed JJ out the doorway and headed out to the twinkie, he was only humoring him. Every other time JJ has hinted at John B liking Y/n he's denied it, but that hasn't changed anything so he might as well have fun with it.
Once the guys made it to the beach they met Pope, Kie and Y/n already there. Y/n laid on a towel soaking in the sun while Kie and Pope sat together talking and laughing.
"You guys ready?" John B called out, both him and JJ holding their boards. The other three jumped to their feet with excited "yeahs". "Oh and Y/n?" He called out with a sly grin, waiting till she got her attention to slap JJ on the back. "JJ here volunteered to help you out today, how nice is that?"
"Really?" Y/n's eyes widen in hopes he finally wanted to spend time with her. While JJ's mouth was dropped open as he looked at John B with killer eyes.
John B only smiled smug and gestured to answer Y/n. He knew JJ wasn't going to be that much of a dick to just say no now. JJ cleared his throat, scrunching his face as he scratched the back of his head. "Uh - uh yeah. I did tell John B that, didn't I?" He grumbled the last part ignoring Kie and Popes weird gazes at how he was acting.
They all headed out to the ocean with their boards, JJ and Y/n hanging back so he can try to teach her some basics. They paddled out a bit and off away from where the other three pouges were riding waves. Y/n sat straddling her board, as JJ sat on his next to her. "Okay so, you probably won't want to take on big waves right now. But if you're getting lessons from me, you'll be one of the best surfers out here in no time."
Y/n let out a belly laugh causing JJ to have a smile of his own. "Don't get too cocky now."
"Oh trust me, pretty girl. I got a reason to be cocky."
Y/n's breath got caught in her throat after hearing what JJ just called her, but he didn't seem to register what he even called her. She swallowed and wiped the whispy hair that escaped her braid out of her face. "I'm sure you do." She tried to tease him back, and it got a chuckle out of him before he stopped himself. What are you doing, he thought to himself, you're supposed to hate her. Even if she really is pretty.
He paddled a little closer and began with the teaching lesson. "Alright so all you need to do…"
"Give me the keys."
All of the pouges looked at JJ with shock. But JJ didn't falter just had his hand gesturing to John B for the keys. "JJ we should wait for- "
"Look, give me the keys right now. Her parents already hate me, and I kind of owe her."
John B's lips formed an 'O' and the other two looked at each other with small smiles. "Stop making that face." JJ shook his head, not even wanting to see the 'I knew it' looks Kie and Pope had on.
"Oh, you owe her, huh?" John B snickered, but dropped the car keys in JJ's awaiting hand.
JJ only jumped in the front seat and waisted no time in speeding to your house leaving the other three pouges at the chateau.
"I knew it!" Kie squealed, the other two boys nodding along. "That idiot so liked her all along."
JJ sped in the twinkie as fast as it could go to your house. On arrival he already noticed that your car was parked in the driveway so you had to be home. Just ignoring him for being the asshole he is. He also noticed your parents were sitting on the steps, like they were expecting someone.
He hopped out of the van and slammed the door behind him. He turned around to face your parents, your dad looking at him like he hated him. Granted, he did. "Howdy, y'all."
"JJ," Your father called out. "Don't even step on my property."
"Yeah, right." JJ sighed, looking around before back at them. "Well, you know why I'm here. To see Y/n, and well we were supposed to hear from her but we haven't yet. So I - "
"JJ, she's not here." Your mom said.
He looked over at your car still in the driveway. "Like I'm supposed to believe that. Okay, um, well then where is she?"
"Let's just say you're not going to see her for a long time, alright?"
JJ's heart dropped. No, they couldn't have.
"We sent her someplace where she can rebuild what you are your friends are ruining."
JJ's nostrils flared and his lips formed into a thin line. "You sent her to that wilderness camp?"
Y/n's dad nodded, with a proud look on his face. "Yes."
He let out a deep breath, his hands becoming a fist as he turned towards the van. "Y'know.." he snickered, shaking his head while he kicked at the ground. "Y'all are some real kooks."
Y/n's dad shot up from his seat, starting to run down the stairs. He wanted to pummel JJ for causing the tear in his relationship with his daughter. Y/n's mom stopped him from actually reaching the teenage boy though. "No, Y/M/N. These pouges are destroying my daughter's life!"
JJ yanked the driver door open, "Nah.. You gooned her. You gooned your own daughter."
"You gave us no choice, JJ! And I don't want to see you around my family again."
JJ stuck his head out the window already putting the car in reverse. "Don't worry, Y/D/N. You won't."
He floored it out of the driveway, creating tire marks in his wake. He then put the car in drive and headed towards Kitty Hawk to save you.
--
Your 24 hours at Kitty Hawk were horrible. When you arrived all the girls looked at you like you were the weird outcast, but you couldn't even care. All you could think about was getting the hell out of here.
They took your phone and you doubted anyone knew where you were, especially how you left the pouges. You just hoped that they'd figure out that this wasn't your choice and figure out some scheme to help break you out. If they still wanted to be your friend that is.
It was dark when JJ finally reached the cabin they placed you in. He went through the front office and hiding from security to get to you, but he finally did it.
He grabbed a credit card from his wallet to unlock the door, heavy breathing as the bandana he tied around his face covered his mouth and nose. He quietly opened the door, slipped in and closed it behind him.
There were about 20 bunk beds lined up on both sides on the cabin, so he crouched down and started trying to look for her. "Y/n," he whisper shouted trying to not wake up any other girls other than you. "Y/n.. Y/n."
A girl sat up and turned on her light, gasping when she saw a random man with a bandanna in their cabin. "What are you doing in here?"
His eyes were wide and instinctively raised his hands in surrender. "Hi, uh.. evening miss. Sorry, sorry uh." He slowly stood up as practically all the other girls woke up and focused their attention on him. "Shit."
He looked all around but still didn't see you, it was still dark in some areas of the cabin. "I know this looks bad - I come in peace. I-I'm just looking for someone.. I'm looking for - "
"Me?" Y/n was now sat on the edge of her bunk as she looked at JJ.
He slowly turned to where he heard your voice and froze when he saw you. You weren't hurt, thank god. "Y/n.."
She fought the tears that started to form in her eyes, and climbed down the bunk. She ran over to him and threw her arms around his neck and he tightly held her close to him. They both were breathing heavy in relief. He finally saved her, and she was finally saved.
She pulled away for a moment and looked from his left to right eye frantically. "But how did - how?"
He gave her a small laugh, "I know.. it's a long story. No time to explain though." He paused hearing her angelic laugh and allowing himself not to force himself to ignore it. "There's one thing though.. Y/n I just.. I just want to say I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything."
Y/n's eyes softened and nodded her head. She knew how JJ is with his emotions, and this was the biggest gesture he's ever made to show that he cares about her as a friend. But with what she's experience in the last two days; her fight with the pouges and her parents shipping her away.. She couldn't afford not to be honest with her feelings, it would kill her more.
"I like you." She said softly, emotion thick in her throat. She had a sad,  but genuine smile on her lips.
He sucked in a deep breath of air, not blinking as he registered what she told him. His heart started beating fast, and the urge to run away scratching at him faster.
"I like you too."
They both let out a breath looking at each other like they couldn't believe what the other was telling them. They both made themselves believe that there was no way the other could've liked them back for so long it was shocking to see that they were wrong.
Y/n took a step forward, his hand coming up to cradle her face. The two both looking at each other's eyes to make sure they really wanted to do this. Y/n's eyes fluttered close and JJ leaned in all the way to finally be able to kiss her.
The two of them held each other so gently but firm, to show all the tender and protection they could offer the other.
All the girls in the cabin started cheering loudly. After a second the couple parted with smiles, until they realized they were about to get caught if all the girls kept being loud. Without a word Y/n turned back to grab her bag of clothes while JJ shushed everyone in the cabin.
The two then ran for the cabin door, and headed to the forest where JJ had stashed the twinkie so he wouldn't get caught. They laughed once they successfully made it out of the Kitty Hawk property.
They stopped and caught their breath for a second, and Y/n took this time to turn and admire the boy. "Thank you."
He looked at her with a genuine smile and offered a shrug, reaching out to touch her fingers. "I'll always help my pouge when she's in distress."

- Kiara Carrera
you make a great pillow.
is that a hickey?
Pronouns: They/Them/Theirs, GN!Reader
Tumblr media
There was something calming about the Carrera Residence. Maybe it was the sound of the water gently sloshing around nearby, or the soft rumble of boats in the water, or maybe it was simply the complete and utter silence. Back home, in Tannyhill, catching a wink of sleep was difficult once someone woke up. Ward would start making phone calls and his loud voice would boom throughout the house, Rose's shrill voice would shriek through the hallways, Wheezie's neverending complaints and whines would begin from the second she woke up, Sarah and Rafe would thump around with heavy footsteps. With the Carrea's, however, Mike and Anna were incredibly mindful of their daughter's beauty sleep.
Sadly, Kiara hadn't inherited that caring trait.
"Wake up." Her hushed voice hit your ear, sluggish and still tired but loud enough to draw you from your slumber. "You gotta go, babe. Dad will kill you if he catches you here."
"Mm, I doubt it. Mike loves me." You still remembered the way Mike and Anna's faces brightened when Kiara brought you around to their place. You were sure they'd been praying day and night that her secret partner wasn't one of the troublemakers she called friends. A charming, good kid from Figure Eight had been exactly what they wanted for a future in-law.
"It's conditional." Kiara giggled.
"Oh, fuck you." You laughed softly and she slapped her palm over your mouth, the sting forcing your eyes to crack open and glare in her direction. Kiara snorted and pressed her lips into your shoulder to muffle her giggles, mouthing a silent apology against your skin before slowly peeling her hand back. She moved carefully, nose crinkling when her bed creaked loudly into the quiet air. You could hear the muffled sound of speaking downstairs, signaling her parents were up and about.
"You have to go now," Kiara whispered and tied up her mop of curls into an equally messy bun. She brushed a few curls out of her face and slipped out of bed, tiptoeing around her bedroom to collect the clothes scattered around the floor. Separating your things from hers, she wiggled on the pajamas she'd worn the previous day and motioned for you to hurry up. "You make a great pillow, by the way."
Climbing out of her bed, you began slipping your clothes back on. In the middle of tugging your pants up, you felt your phone slip out of the back pocket and clatter loudly onto the wooden floor. You and Kiara froze, staring at the phone wide-eyed as the sound downstairs briefly paused before resuming again. You scrambled to finish dressing and snatched the phone off the floor, the sounds of the stairs creaking and groaning prompting Kiara to shove you toward the window.
"I'll see you later?" You asked quietly, planting your hands on the windowsill and sticking your legs out. Kiara answered with a kiss and rapid nodding so with one last smile, you hopped down onto the grass below and nearly fell over when your knees threatened to give out. You held in a grunt and braced yourself against the wall, giving your body a minute to catch up.
"Hey, sweetheart," Anna's voice drifted through the open window and held your breath, hoping she hadn't caught on.
"Hey, Mom. What's up?" Kiara was horrible at pretending. You could hear the quivering and awkwardness in her voice.
"We're just finishing up breakfast downstairs. Go brush your teeth and join us." You exhaled a sigh of relief and pushed yourself off the wall, beginning to creep away toward the front gate when you heard Anna's next words and nearly laughed. "Kiara Carrera, is that a hickey?"

Life update 2024
Hey everyone! It’s been a while since I last wrote anything of substance here. How time flies! Happy new year, happy year of the dragon! I hope this one is kind and auspicious for you all.
I'll admit to falling off the art train terribly for most of 2023. I barely drew; a lot of things I posted were older pieces for projects I couldn't share at the time. I think I speak for most of us when I say it's not been a great time for art collectively; growing frustrations with social media and despair at the state of current global affairs leaves little room for creative inspiration. I know many artist friends of mine are in the same boat. There's little one can do except plod on and hope for better times ahead, I guess? I'll do my best regardless!
Having said that, I did have a major touch-grass-normie arc offline, and as wild as it was, I'm glad I invested time and energy into that area of my life. After the lockdown years of terminal-onlineness, it felt great to do things that were not related to fandom at all, to have new experiences, to make new friends, reconnect with old ones, see new things. It was funny and terrifying all at once. I truly felt like a shonen and shojo protagonist (we will not go into details of the love triangle situation, IYKYK!). There were ups and downs, sadness and laughter, but that's part of life. I'm grateful for all that's happened and am a better, wiser, more mature person because of it. This past year taught me it's not about categorizing life's happenings into a basic good/bad dichotomy, but more learning from each experience and acknowledging we are wiser and grateful for having weathered what's thrown our way. Character development!
The universe has a way of working things out... so at the end of 2023, I had the opportunity to travel for 3 months. After hopping around the East Coast, Milan, various bits of Japan and a beach break in sunny Egypt, I've returned home with a renewed vigor for living my best life again. It was a joy to hang out with various artist friends in person and meet some of you at ANYC. I'll cherish every second of my travels and hope we can meet again soon!
I did fall off the nerd bandwagon for a while, so I gotta get back into the various anime on air! I've been watching Magi in my own time... such a guilty pleasure, but so many things await, including catching up on JJK S2, BSD, and everything else. Just goes to show my deep love for adventure, friendship-fuelled stories keeps me going. No promises on what this year holds art wise, but I'll continue trying hard and sharing what I can, as well as the usual self-indulgent group projects.
Thanks as always for the kind support and for sticking around. This blog is 12 this year... crazy, huh? See you on the other side!

Previous part, Series masterlist

The silence was awkward, the tension between the two of you obvious. Kiara couldn’t wait to get off this damn truck.
Once the truck stopped at its destination, the three of you all hopped out. You looked around.
“Come on. My boats down here.” He said, you and Kiara followed him down to the dock.
“Make sure your shoes are off.” He said when he jumped in.
You and Kiara were still on the dock, hesitant.
“Okay, we should have enough juice to get us to Saint Lucia, no problem.”
“Hey, get in the boat.” He grunted out to Kiara and you, looking at you now.
“You’re not gonna pull anything if we get in?” You asked him, your arms crossed.
“No, I’m not gonna pull anything, okay? I’m trying to do you guys a solid here. You really wanna be back there with Singh or do you wanna be somewhere safe?”
Neither of you answered.
“Now can one of you please help me with the bowline?” He asked her.
You followed her into the boat, and you went over to the bowline. You began to undo the knot when Kiara tapped your shoulder.
“Let me do it.” Kiara whispered, glancing at Rafe and back to you.
“What? Okay…” you shrugged, ignoring it for now. You stood behind her as she went over.
“I can’t get it!” She yelled.
“What?” He asked, looking at her now.
“I need some help!”
“Goddamn, do I have to do everything?” He hopped down, over to the cleat
When he undid it, you didn’t see Kiara behind you now, she ran into you, pushing you off instead of Rafe.
Rafe looked at her, confused. Before he even had a chance, she was pushing him off as well.
You and Rafe fell down into the water, gasping for air. She shouted your name.
“Go, Kie! Go!” You motioned, the water splashing as your hands hit it.
“I’m sorry, y/n!”
“Kie! Hey! Kie, where are you going?” Rafe shouted.
“I’ve gotta help my friends!” She shouted back, driving the boat away from the two of you as Rafe shouted at her.
After his tantrum, you swam to the dock, your once white shirt now see through.
“Oh. My. God.” You grumbled, looking down at yourself, putting your arms over your chest.
Could this day seriously get any worse?
Rafe swam soon after, his fist clenched and his head pounding.
He looked you up and down, before walking away. You followed behind.
—————-
“Wait, where’s my sister?” Jj asked Kiara when he pulled away.
She grimaced, her face falling.
“Kie. Where is she?” His smile was gone now, his confusion and anxiety replacing it.
“I… we ran into Rafe. I didn’t trust him, but she was in my way… she’s alive. But…” Kiara admitted, looking shamefully at the ground.
“You mean she’s with that fucking psychopath right now?”
“I wanted to go back to her, Jj, I would have but… she told me to go.”
“We’re not leaving this island until we find her.”
—————
“This is exactly why I always fuckin’ say never trust them.” He mumbled mostly to himself.
“She doesn’t trust you, obviously.” You told him. Your arms were crossed over your body, trying to shield it.
“After I helped you both escape?”
“I can barely trust you.”
“Seriously? Are you still mad about-“
“Don’t even, Rafe.” You warned.
“I apologized, I’m sorry, I don’t know what else you want me to do!” He exclaimed.
“You’re an asshole.”
“I’m an asshole? I was gonna save your ass until she pushed us off-“
“I can’t believe I’m stuck with you again.” You told him, a small frown on your face as you walked off the dock.
He rolled his eyes at your complaining, turning to you suddenly and putting his hands on your shoulders, his eyes boring into yours. “I’m sorry. Okay? Now could you please, just bear with me for a second?”
“No.”
“I’m being serious, y/n. I’m your only hope at getting back to Kildare.” He pointed to himself, taking one hand off of you.
“I have a plan but you have to listen to me.” He continued. You sighed.
“Fine. But as soon as we get back-“
“You’ll never have to talk to me again.” He said. But the thought of it had him reeling. He would make you fall in love with him again, no matter what it would cost.
He took his hands off your shoulders. Looking behind you, he noticed a man staring at your wet shirt, your bra visible under it.
“You got a staring problem?” Rafe barked at him quickly, you turning around to the man now as well. The man quickly turned around, and Rafe shook his head.
“C’mon.” He told you. He ended up buying, or rather stealing a jacket for you, putting it over the cold, wet shirt you had on.
You both walked in silence through the island, Rafes hands shoved into his pockets.
He looked at a man, stopping in his tracks. You furrowed your eyebrows and Rafe just gave you that ‘trust me’ look.
“Hey, man.”
“Huh?”
“Sorry. Sorry to bother you. Um.. I have the perfect gift for your wife. It’s like a great price too.”
“Yeah?”
“So this, all through here is where all the tourists shop, but the real deal is like right back here.” He pointed to an alleyway, you quickly catching onto his idea.
“It’s a great local spot.” You chimed into the conversation, a small sweet smile on your face as you looked at the man.
“I don’t know..” he hesitated.
“Just trying to help you out.” Just real quick, you wanna..?”
“Okay.” He agreed, you followed him.
“It’s got like some of the best custom jewelry on the island. It’s incredible.” Rafe told the man, leading him to the alley.
“Uh, just right back here.” You followed them.
You held the man back, putting him in a chokehold against the wall.
“Do we have to?” You asked Rafe, looking at the petrified man and back at Rafe.
“It’s not that hard.” Rafe groaned, punching the man in the face, knocking him out. He cracked his knuckles, watching you set the man gently onto the ground.
Rafe grabbed his hat, and you dug into his pockets, grabbing his wallet.
“So sorry, so sorry.” You mumbled as if he could hear, walking away from the body.
“Where are we going now?” You asked Rafe.
He nodded to a boat in the distance.
“All right, all aboard to Guadeloupe.”
“How you doing, boss?” Rafe asked, you following behind.
“Good. How are you?”
“Living the dream. You got some sun since you took this photo, man.”
You handed the man your fake id, it checked out.
“Enjoy Guadeloupe.” He told the both of you. You gave the man a smile and walked next to Rafe.
“What the hell are we gonna do in Guadeloupe?”
——
“Fuck no, Rafe! He- he-“ you pointed to the man sitting outside.
“I know, I know what happened, but you gotta listen. This is the only place we have to go right now, and- and I can’t have either of you freaking out on each other- ‘aight?”
“I’m out of here, Rafe. I’m done with this shit.” You told him, turning around but he grabbed your wrist.
“You have nowhere to go. Please. It will only be for a little, then I can find you a way back to the outer banks.”
You groaned, looking at the man outside and back at Rafe.
“Fine. But is there like a phone I can borrow, because-“
“I’ll get you a phone. Just please, stay here for a little.”
Rafe went outside to Ward, Ward nodded over to you, standing inside, running a hand over your face.
“What’s she doing here?”
“Long story. I just- she has no where to go and-“
“Do you trust her?” Ward asked him suddenly.
Rafe furrowed his eyebrows.
“Do you trust her?”
“I- I don’t know- I-“
“Do you or do you not, Rafe?”
“I.. I do. She’s not gonna do anything, she has nowhere else to stay and it’s too dangerous here for her to. Please. Just let her stay.”
Ward sighed. “She can stay, but the second I see her try anything-“
“She won’t.”
They talked for a while, Rafe sitting down next to him.
“Theres something I need you to do for me right now, okay?”
“Name it.”
“I need you to go back to the Outer Banks. Kildare.”
“Why?” Rafe asked, swallowing a lump in his throat.
“There’s nothing there for us, not anymore. I need you to wrap everything up for me, all right? I need you to see the businesses, sell the rental properties.” He paused. “I need you to sell Tannyhill.”
Rafe spluttered, looking at Ward in disbelief. “Wait, we’re selling Tannyhill? Is that what you said?”
Ward looked to him, nodding. “Yeah.”
“W-why? What are you talking about?”
“It’s not our home anymore. This is. This is our home now.” He leaned back in the chair. “And it’s a clean slate. It’s a new beginning, a new path. And I need to take a bigger role, all right? You can forget about her.” He nodded to you again. “Can I count on you for that?”
Rafe hung his head down, looking at you from the window. You stared back at him.
He can do everything else, he’s just not too sure he can just forget you though.
“Of course, yes. Of course, dad.” He said, looking back at his father.
“Yeah, all right, good. Listen, I got some papers inside. I’m gonna bring them. We’re gonna go over them. Tell you what to do, and while you’re gone, I am going to be taking that cross and looking into it.” He stood up, Rafe standing as well now.
“We have that cross because of you. You got it for us, and you saved it. I just need you to be careful. You get in there, handle this business, drop her off, and you get back here safely. All right? You’re a Cameron. That still means something.”
When his dad went into the house, he gave you a small nod and smile. You just kept looking at Rafe through the window, and he stared right back.

“Always gotta show up where I am, huh?” Joel teased, eyes glittering with amusement. “So obsessed with me.”
Etho rolled his eyes, but there was a smile in his voice. “I was invited. You’re the one that followed me here.”
“I was invited too-”
“You were both invited, jeez,” Gem huffed as she emerged from her fishing hut. “Gosh, Scar was right, you two need to get a room.”
Etho blushed, cheeks pinking over the top of his mask, and it was so cute that she didn’t feel even a little bad about her jab.
“Come down to my storage room,” she said, heading down the stairs to her underwater storage area. She had just finished decorating, and she wanted to show it off – plus privacy was a perk.
“This is a nice room,” Joel said as he trailed in behind Etho. “You giving us a room?”
Etho groaned under his breath, rubbing his forehead and leaning against the glass separating them from the water.
Gem pretended to think it over for a moment. “I mean, if you guys want to fuck it out in here… as long as you don’t mind me watching.” She hopped up on a chest she’d forgotten, leaning back on her hands and swinging her legs. She allowed herself the guilty pleasure of enjoying Etho’s deepening blush. Even the tips of his ears turned red.
But Joel was blushing too, and there was something so charming about Joel when he was flustered. He talked a big game but underneath he was a softie. Plus Gem was very good friends with his wife – and knew just how hard the Etho obsession ran.
Not like Gem could fault him for it. She was better at being cool about it, but she was an Ethogirl, through and through.
“So, what d’you need, Gem?” Joel finally broke the silence, clearing his throat. “You didn’t bring us here to kill us, right?”
“No, no, I’m not red, yet,” she said, and now it was her turn to be nervous. “I, um... When you guys finished Double Life, Pearl told me a lot.”
Both men groaned.
“Blummin’ heck,” Joel muttered, and plonked himself down on the bottom stairs.
“In visceral detail, “Gem continued. “What the Boat Boys were like.”
“Is this some kind of intervention?” Etho asked, eyeing Joel accusingly.
“No,” Gem replied, raising her palms. “Though my offer still stands. No, I...” She took a deep breath and let out a shaky laugh. “I couldn’t stop thinking about it. You guys were just rotting my brain.”
Joel cocked a brow, his goofy grin returning, that feigned bravado. “Did you bring us here because you’re obsessed with us?”
Gem looked at the ceiling. “God,” she murmured. “Why’d it have to be Joel?”
“You tell me, princess,” he said with a wink, and Etho groaned again but Gem shivered at the nickname. She had to just spit it out.
“I have had a very particular fantasy in my head for a long time,” she began. “I thought about talking to you during Secret Life but everything was so chaotic and the tasks and stuff… but now we’re in a unique situation with Demise and...”
Etho was staring at her. This expression was no longer flustered. He looked intrigued. That was a good sign. Joel didn’t fill the silence with any snarking, which was a first.
“I suppose I have a request... if you’re interested, of course.”

Paul making Till choose a balloon (and Richard has another present)
Groningen 2023-07-07! by ig account suzannedvrs
i imagine it went something like this
"Till! Hey Till!!"
"Give me your hand Paul.."
"Look what i've got Till! Tadaaa...choose!"
"What? No."
"But you gotta, look, i brought a shark and a heart"
"Get out of the boat Paul" (drags Paul out by the collar)
(indistinct mumbling because of being dragged, hopping out and keeping balance all at the same time) "Look, you've gotta choose one!"
"Get moving, i've gotta help Olli out"
"Come on choose, shark, heart, shark, heart.."
"Paul!"
"Okay, here, have the heart"
"okay fine" (stuffs it under one arm while Paul walks away and Olli hops out)
(waiting...) "...must ask Flake to remind me why we needed *two* guitarists.."
"Till! Hey Till!"
"Not again.."
"Look what i've got Till! Tadaaa!" (proudly showing piece of lingerie)
"Oh for fuck's sake.. just get out!"
"Brought it especially for you...mwah" (kiss on the cheek at hopping out and walking off)
"No guitarists....that must be so peaceful..."

Glue (Part 3)
Summary: John B and JJ get Reader back but need to have a talk with her about some things they heard her say to Luke.
TW/CW: Routledge!Reader x JJ Maybank, more mentions of gun stuff, more angst.
Requested?: No
Word Count: 1,621
A/N: Part 1 Here || Part 2 Here || I'm honestly glad I only did this in three parts. Imo somewhere around 1,000 words is perfect for an imagine. I hope the ending isn't disappointing... Requests are Open! Much love to all!
Tumblr media
(Y/N)’s POV
The zip ties around my wrists are starting to hurt. I glare at his back, drilling into his spine, “Why don’t you just shoot me already? I’m dispensable.”
Luke shakes his head, “I’m not gonna fall for that darlin’.”
“You’re a real piece of work, you know? Your son is the smartest, kindest, most loyal person I know, and you treated him like he was worthless. Hell, you even made him believe it. I spent countless nights bandaging him up because of your shitty little tantrums. I saw him at his lowest and I still don’t deserve him. I don’t deserve his loyalty and kindness that he obviously didn’t get from his piece of shit father.”
Finally, Luke snaps. He makes his way to me and puts his gun under my chin, “You shut your mouth. That kid ain’t worth the dust under my boots.”
“I fucking dare you to say that again. If it keeps you away from him, I’ll gladly take a bullet because he deserves all the happiness and love in the world not the threat of his worthless, shitty, man child father looming over his head.”
He cocks the gun back. I grin, “Fucking do it. Put me out of my fucking misery. I spend every day watching as my friends and brother drift away. I spend every day wishing I was worth something, wishing I deserved the pity they show me. I know that’s all it is. They pity me. If I didn’t have them, I’d have no one and they feel sorry for me.” Suddenly, a loud bang sounds toward the front of the boat. Luke jerks his head toward the noise and then runs off. It’s quiet for a moment before there’s a tap at the window above me. I look up to see JJ lift the cracked window all the way open. He drops into the room, and I jump up, burying my face in his chest.
He kisses the top of my head and whispers, “I got you.” He pushes me away from him enough to pull out his pocketknife and cut off my ties. He helps me climb out of the window to my waiting brother and then hoists himself up to follow. No one says another word as we race to the Twinkie.
In the backseat, JJ starts looking me over. I wince as he grabs my shoulders. His eyes widen, “What? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to- “
“It’s okay,” I mumble, “Can you pop my shoulder back into place?”
JJ’s jaw clenches as he does what I asked before returning to looking me over. Having enough, I bury into his chest. He wraps his arms tight around me and kisses the top of my head again. Soon, John B is putting the Twinkie in park and getting out to check on me as well. He opens the side door but finds me refusing to leave JJ’s side. “Come on Little Bird, we gotta get you some bandaids,” John B say in attempts to coax me away from my safety net.
JJ lifts me up and hops out of the van to carry me into the Sheriff’s Office. Inside, Sarah, Kie, Pope, and Cleo jump up to greet us. JJ carries me to a chair and sets me down. He grabs a first aid kit from nearby before returning to clean and bandage me up. Shoop exits his office, “I told you two we’d handle it.”
“Well, if you hurry you might catch him before he wakes up and gets free of the chain,” John B declares.
Shoop clenches his jaw and motions to several officers, giving orders, before coming to squat in front of me. I feel JJ tense up beside me and place my hand on his arm. Shoop takes a deep breath, “You alright, kid?”
I look to JJ, “I am now.” Shoop nods and leaves us.
John B joins us, “We need to talk (Y/N), when you feel up for it.”
Sometime later when everyone’s gone to bed, I find myself sitting on the dock lost in thought. I hear footsteps behind me but don’t bother to look back. JJ takes a seat on my right, dropping his legs over the side of the wooden structure to swing them back and forth above the water. A glance over my shoulder alerts me to John B’s presence. He opted to lean against the banister to my left, staring out at the night sky.
It’s silent for a few moments before JJ takes a deep breath, “Listen, we uh… we heard what you said to Luke.”
Involuntarily, I cringe. That wasn’t meant for their ears. I meant every word I said but I only said it because I thought it’d never leave the room. I shrug, “It’s nothing.”
“It isn’t nothing (Y/N). You’re my little sister. Why didn’t you come to me?” John B responds, sounding hurt.
“I- I don’t know... I didn’t want to feel like a burden.”
“You’re never a burden to us (Y/N),” JJ says before glancing up at John B. “I think I speak for us both when I say that we’d do anything to make sure you’re safe and happy.”
I shrug again, not knowing what to say and feeling my nerves attempting to force me into my shell. John B squats down beside me and brushes hair out of my eyes, “You deserve the world. Anything you want, I’ll do my damndest to make sure you get it and I’m sure JJ would too. You’re the glue that holds us all together and I could never express how sorry I am that we made you feel less than that.” He kisses the top of my head, “If you ever feel like this again, please come to me come to me. If you don’t want to talk to me, talk to JJ. Just please let someone know so we can make it right.” I nod and taking a deep breathe he looks to JJ, “Maybe it’s about time, man.” He looks back at me and offers a small smile, “I love you Little Bird. Don’t ever forget that.”
I return his smile and nod, mumbling an “I love you,” in return.
He stands and pats my head gently, “I’m gonna go get some sleep. Don’t stay up too late.” I nod and watch him leave.
It’s silent for a few heartbeats before JJ clears his throat, “Did you really- Did you really mean everything you said? About me?”
I look over to him and he’s fidgeting with the rings on his fingers, “Of course I did J. Little does John B know that you’re the glue that holds the glue together.”
He chuckles a small bit and takes my hand in his, fiddling with my fingers now, “So you’re not mad at me?”
My brows scrunch together, “Why would I be mad at you?”
“Because you got taken on my watch by my father...” he trails off.
“You listen to me, and you listen well. I will never ever blame you for anything that that man does. You are not him and you never will be. Actually, you’re the exact opposite and I’d give anything to make sure you know that and don’t blame yourself.” He looks me in the eyes now, almost searching for something. I tilt my head at him, “What?”
“Will you pinky promise that we’ll stay best friends and I won’t lose you if I say what’s on my mind?” he ask, offering his pinky.
I take it in mine, “Of course, JJ. No matter what we always have each other.”
He takes a huge deep breath, “I love you (Y/N). I don’t mean as a friend. I mean I’m in love with you. I know I don’t deserve you and it’s probably going to be awkward now, but I can’t stand knowing you think so little of yourself when I think so highly of you. You’re insanely smart. You’re hilarious. You’re always there for everyone when we need you. You’re always there for me when I need you. I just can’t-” I interrupt him by kissing him. At first, he seems hesitant but quickly he relaxes. As cliche as it sounds, his lips fit perfectly in mine. I can’t believe I fought so hard to keep from doing this all this time. When we finally pull away for air, he grins “From now on, that’s how I want you to stop my rambling.”
I laugh softly and fully take his hand in mine, “I love you too, JJ. Like I said, I meant every word I said to Luke. You are without a doubt my favorite person on planet earth, and I want to make sure you know that.”
His grin gets even bigger, “So, does this mean you’ll be my girlfriend?”
I nod, “of course,” before kissing him again.
We sat there on that dock enjoying each other’s presence and our newfound mutual feelings for hours. We talked about all kinds of stuff and shared kisses under the moonlight.
JJ’s POV
As the sun peaks over the horizon, I look down to find (Y/N) curled into my side and fast asleep. I smile to myself and admire the way her hair brushes her face and how peaceful she looks. I never thought I’d see the day where I got to call her my girl. Happiness swells in my chest as I carefully scoop her into my arms and head for the house. She’s still sound asleep when I lay her on her bed and crawl in next to her, pulling her close and drifting off myself with a smile permanently plastered on my face.

CH 13- We Won, Right?
Prev
Ian and Sarah sprinted in the opposite direction, no longer concerned with the cargo hold. They needed to get out of there before a T-Rex with a grudge decided to make them supper.
Running. Why was it always running? They were back home, back on the mainland, where no dinosaurs were supposed to exist, and still they were running.
They watched helplessly as the T-Rex took off toward the city with no possible way to stop it.
Sarah turned to the group. “The animal’s dehydrated. First, it’ll go to a water source, then look for the next thing its body needs. All the containment equipment is here. We gotta get it to the dock. The boat might be seaworthy. I know what you’re gonna say. When we brought the baby to the trailer, it came. There’s no reason why it won’t do the same thing here.”
Ian protested throughout Sarah’s speech, but she talked over him.
“Ian, we have to. If not us, who?” Adelaide said.
Ian looked at her in shock. He didn’t expect them to team up on this one, but it looked like he was left with no other choice.
Seeing this in Ian’s face, Sarah turned to Ludlow, who sat on a ledge above them looking utterly dejected. “Where’s the infant?”
“In a secure facility,” Ludlow mumbled apathetically.
“Where’s the facility?”
And with that, they were off again, driving to go pick up a baby T-Rex. Adelaide watched in awe as the world passed them by. Not only was she seeing things she’d never seen before, but the way Ian could just…drive a car like that.
Adelaide didn’t take trips in the car often. She didn’t go places often. It never ceased to amaze her how Beans could operate something so big and complicated, and everyone just did it every day like it was nothing. All those rules, all that technical skill, all that coordination. She didn’t think much of most Beans, but she had to commend them on that one.
Adelaide knew Ian had to be breaking some kind of rules with how fast he was going though, and how he crashed through a gate that had big, red sign that said, STOP. That probably wasn’t allowed.
They kept going until they reached a familiar gateway. It was a little smaller than the original, but in all the ways that mattered, this stone arch was the exact same one they saw when they entered the original Jurassic Park.
Beyond that was a bunch of equipment, and the car came to a screeching halt, temporarily sending Adelaide to the bottom of the pocket.
The Beans wasted no time hopping out of the car and heading toward a cage. The baby T-Rex laid there in a pile of hay, and Adelaide couldn’t help but feel sorry for the creature. It didn’t ask for this. She had to consistently remind herself that they were doing the right thing here, even if it was terrifying.
Sarah hoisted the baby out of the cage and carried it to the car, Ian opening the door for her.
“When the adult sees us again with his baby, isn’t he going to be like, ‘You!’? There may be some uh, angry recognition there,” Ian suggested as he climbed into the car.
“Who knows? He may be just happy to see us,” Sarah countered.
“Hey! What the hell are you doing?” A rough, masculine voice shouted at them from nearby. All three of them turned to see two men pointing guns at them.
Adelaide’s heart stopped. Anything but guns. She’d rather sit down and have a conversation with these two unknown giants. Because not only would a gun obliterate her, it had the power to kill Ian and Sarah with just one bullet. As Adelaide admired Beans for some of their inventions, she really despised them for others.
Besides a faint increase in heart rate though, Ian seemed unbothered. “We’re taking the kid. If you really want to stop us, shoot us,” he said.
Adelaide’s eyes widened. “Oh my god, you’re going to get us killed,” she muttered. Most of the time, Ian’s cockiness was admirable, even entertaining. Now did not feel like the time.
The men held their guns steadfast. They didn’t even blink.
Before she could think about the consequences of what she was about to do, Adelaide shouted, “Hey, hey! Look at me!” She waved her arms and tried to draw as much attention as possible.
Stunned at the sight of such a small being, the men faltered. Their weapons dipped. Ian used the temporary distraction to gun it, slamming on the pedal and sending the car flying backward.
Only when the men were small dots in her vision did Adelaide let herself breathe, but their adventure wasn’t over yet. That probably wasn’t even the hardest part. Hopefully they wouldn't tell their friends about her, but she also suspected nobody would believe them if they tried.
Curious, she dragged herself out of the pocket and up Ian’s shoulder. It took a lot longer than usual with the wind and the jerky movements of the car and the fact that she couldn’t use her left hand.
“Della, not now,” Ian sighed, knowing he couldn’t take his eyes off the road to help her if she fell.
“I got it,” Adelaide insisted, annoyed that he just assumed she would fall.
Once she made it to his shoulder, she stared back at Sarah and the baby in the backseat with wide eyes. It was so little, relatively speaking, and it looked dazed beyond belief. It had the same yellow eyes as its parents, but its pupil was massive.
“Is it okay?” Adelaide asked Sarah.
Sarah looked between Adelaide and the infant. “Yeah, just drugged out.” Then, something caught the woman’s gaze from way up above. Adelaide turned around to follow her line of sight, and there stood the full adult T-Rex, rampaging through the city. That was easy.
Adelaide finally took stock of their surroundings. She wasn’t exactly sure what a city was supposed to look like, but it certainly wasn’t supposed to look like this. Cars littered the streets, some upside-down, some on fire. Glass windows lining shops and restaurants were all smashed in, the glass scattered everywhere. People screamed and ran in every direction. It was amazing how much destruction one animal could cause.
Adelaide thought back to Jurassic Park when another Tyrannosaur knocked Ian into the air and sent him crashing down onto a roof. She remembered how small she felt then. She was feeling something quite similar now. Even together, all these big and powerful Beans stood no chance against it.
“He won’t know we have it unless it makes some kind of sound!” Ian shouted as Sarah tried to wake the baby up. But the T-Rex trained its eyes right on them. It knew.
Ian took off again, leaving Adelaide clinging on for dear life. Still, she was incredibly fascinated by the infant, getting to see it up close. She watched it blink and breathe and wiggle around. It was almost…cute? It was hard to believe it would grow up to be such a giant, horrifying monster.
Eventually, the baby was awake enough to start wailing. It hurt Adelaide’s ears like all loud noises did, but it also hurt her heart. It was scared and alone. It just wanted its parents. She could relate to that.
They raced along for what felt like ages. At any moment, that dinosaur could close in and smash them to pieces. Ian kept looking to his right, trying to find a way through the blurry warehouses.
“Is there a way through?” Sarah shouted.
“God, there could be,” Ian said nervously. Without thinking much about it, he jerked the steering wheel to the right and plowed through one of the warehouse doors. Luckily, the doors gave way and they made it through without injury. Unluckily, the car didn’t fare so well. On the surface, its windshield was severely cracked and the car was covered in scratches. He was sure it was even worse underneath.
Adelaide screamed, but also made it through unscathed. She didn’t even have time to process what just happened before Ian was out of the car and headed toward Sarah and the dinosaur.
“Trade you?” he said to Sarah, and Adelaide knew what that meant. She also knew protesting was useless, but that didn’t mean she was happy about it.
Ian gently took the infant from Sarah, then rolled his shoulder forward for Adelaide to fall off. She screamed again, unprepared for the fall. It never got any easier, falling from heights like that. To Beans, the fall itself was only a couple inches, and it was only over a four foot, maybe five foot drop. Scaled to borrower size, she fell a couple feet over a one hundred foot drop. There was always someone there to catch her, but the brief moment of weightlessness always gave her a mild heart attack. She preferred to have her own two feet firmly planted on solid ground where she could control her environment. But she chose to exist with giants. This was the price she would have to pay.
Adelaide landed with an exhale in Sarah’s soft hands. She blinked a couple of times to regain her bearings and found herself looking up at Sarah’s face.
“I got you,” Sarah assured her, and Adelaide gulped. She did this before. She could do it again. She trusted Sarah.
They ran along toward the wrecked boat, Adelaide bouncing up and down in Sarah’s hand.
“Where’s the Rex? Is it behind us?” Sarah asked.
As if on cue, the dinosaur smashed through the warehouse walls, leaving behind a much larger hole than their car. The sudden noise scared all three of them, but they didn’t slow down.
“Holy shit!” Adelaide hollered, instinctively ducking down for cover. “Sarah!” she called.
“Yup, got it!” Sarah responded, placing Adelaide in her pocket as softly as she could manage while running.
The boat was in sight. Then they were on it. Then Ian was depositing the baby dinosaur in the cargo hold. Then they were running again. Running straight to the edge of the boat.
Adelaide waited for them to slow down or make a hard left turn, but it never came. She realized too late that the Beans fully intended to hop over the railing and fall to the water below to escape the adult T-Rex. It would probably (hopefully) be too distracted by its baby to take any interest in them, especially down in the water.
“ Waitwaitwaitwaitwaitwait !” Adelaide cried, but her voice was lost to the chaos around them.
Everyone was momentarily airborne, and then they crashed into the harbor.
Adelaide’s breath was knocked right out of her from the impact, and then she registered the cold. It was beyond freezing. She couldn’t feel anything - her toes, her fingers, her face. It was like she ceased to exist.
She probably would cease to exist momentarily if she didn’t find her way to the surface. The water was not only cold, but incredibly dark, too. Her air was running low, and it was only exacerbated by her panic. Adelaide flailed and flailed, gasping for breath that wouldn’t come. Water entered her lungs instead, which she instinctively coughed up along with the small amount of remaining air. Her grasp on consciousness was slipping fast.
As light as her body was, combined with all the flailing, Adelaide’s body found its way to the surface naturally. But the small, calm waves created by falling bodies may as well have been a tsunami to her.
Just when the lightheaded feeling threatened to overtake her, something large wrapped around her body and squeezed tight. It was probably someone’s hand. God, she hoped it was someone’s hand. It would be just her luck if a big sea creature came by to drag her down into the depths of the ocean.
Thankfully, she was right, because not seconds later her face found light and air. Adelaide didn’t even have time to struggle against the hand before it opened. Her body sprawled out across the palm as she coughed up all the remaining water in her lungs. It just kept going, more water kept coming out, and she still couldn’t find air. She thought surely she’d be able to breathe once she left the water, but only after a solid ten seconds of coughing was she able to take a meager breath.
After Ian was sure Adelaide was breathing, he swam toward the boat. He tried to keep her as stable as possible, but it wasn’t easy.
On her part, Adelaide felt like she was going to throw up from all the movement. She felt the waves overtake her body a couple times as Ian swam along, and each time she thought she might drown.  After what felt like forever but was probably less than a minute, Ian dragged himself up a ladder and out of the water.
Adelaide thought the ocean was cold. The air was infinitely worse. Her jacket was no match for the cool night air of San Francisco when she was dry, and now she was soaked to the bone. She curled up into a ball to try to preserve heat, but it felt useless. Her body was incapable of doing anything but shivering.
Ian tried to talk to Adelaide this whole time, but she couldn’t hear him over the sound of her own teeth chattering, so he  gave up for the time being. As long as she was breathing she’d be fine for a couple more minutes. He cupped her to his chest and followed Sarah up some stairs. Reaching the control panel, he wasted no time in smashing the button to close the cargo hold. Now all he could do was watch anxiously as Sarah readied the tranquilizer.
A helicopter flew by full of men with guns. There could only be one reason they were there - to kill the T-Rex.
Adelaide heard the commotion above and tried to peek out to see what was going on. Uncurling her body let the cold air back in though, and she started shivering more. Ian cupped her closer to his chest, absently shushing her but keeping his eyes trained on the Rex. There was nothing so important going on that she needed to see.
Adelaide didn’t fight it. Something in the back of her mind told her she was supposed to be miffed, but a larger part of her mind said, cold.
Being in such a small space next to a massive being that absolutely radiated heat helped a lot, but Ian was also soaking wet. His T-shirt felt cold and water dripped down his body and onto hers. What she wouldn’t give for a towel right now.
A final clang and the absence of dinosaur noises signaled to Adelaide that it was over.  “We won, right?” she called up to Ian. They had to have won.
Ian distractedly looked down at her, then laughed at her over-simplification of the situation. “Oh yeah, we won,” he said. He looked back at Sarah, then back to the enclosure. She successfully tranquilized the dinosaur just before the big cargo hold doors slammed shut. The T-Rex was going home, and so were they.
The ride back to Sarah’s place was quiet. Adelaide remained in place, still trying (unsuccessfully) to warm up her small body. Sarah and Ian were just too shell-shocked to say anything. What was there to say, anyway?
They promptly bypassed and ignored any security personnel who tried to stop them or ask questions. That could be an issue for later, but they were tired, cold, and wet. They wanted to go home.
The door slammed closed as they reentered. “We’re back!” Ian called out, and Kelly only gave them a brief glance and a wave. Then, seeing what they looked like, she did a double take.
“What happened?!” she asked, attention fully on the adults now.
“Oh, you know. Fought some bad guys. Saved some dinosaurs,” Ian shrugged, searching for a hook to hang the car keys on. Sarah snatched them from his hand and tossed them on the table.
“Great! So they’re headed back to the island?”
“You got it.”
For the first time in a while, Adelaide’s surroundings changed. Light filtered in and she whined when she was pulled away from the radiator that was Ian’s body.
She was placed on something mildly soft, which wasn’t half-bad. Then that soft thing wrapped around her body just a little too tight, pinning her arms and legs in place, and she was lifted into the air again.
Adelaide’s eyes whipped open and she violently wriggled in place, trying to free herself of the towel. Above her was Ian’s face.
“You gotta warm up, Della,” Ian said, holding the bundle against his chest and anticipating her protest .
Adelaide tried to stay calm as she spoke, but it felt like her confines were getting tighter by the second. Despite her efforts, her voice shook. “Ian, let me go. I’m seriously…I’m seriously going to freak out.”
“Okay, okay,” he said, setting her back down on the table and unwrapping her so that the towel only draped loosely over her body. “But don’t move. I’ll be right back.”
With that, Ian disappeared. Adelaide took a shaky breath and considered her options while she laid there. She wasn’t frozen anymore, but it still wasn’t warm, especially with the way her clothes still clung to her body. Impatient, she sat up, looking for a better way to dry off. After a bit of searching, her eyes fell on a heating vent down by the floor across the room. If the disturbance of the various objects around it was any indication, it looked to be on.
That settled it. Adelaide stood up, letting the towel fall to her feet. She pulled her hook out of her bag, which now reeked of old, wet clothes. That would have to be a later problem. She turned to latch her hook onto the edge of the table, but when she did so, she was faced with the torso of a human.
Adelaide jumped, but it was just Kelly. How did she not hear the girl coming? Looking around nervously, Adelaide noted that they were alone. Obviously she trusted Kelly, but without another adult nearby…
“I thought my dad said not to move,” Kelly said. There was fascination in her eyes. Now that they weren’t concerned with dinosaurs or running for their lives, Kelly marveled over how cool it was that there was a tiny person living with her dad.
“Well, your dad’s not the boss of me,” Adelaide said, hoping the girl wasn’t going to stop her, but Kelly only smirked in response. Something about the rebellion of it all or whatever.
It didn’t look like she was going anywhere though, so Adelaide was going to have to climb down with a giant studying her every move. It wasn’t like she’d never done that before, but she didn’t know Kelly super well, and it was hard to miss the way the girl emanated, ‘I want to hold you’.
Adelaide gulped, then swung herself over the edge. She gasped in pain when she tried to grab the thread with her left hand. With that hand out of commission, it was much harder to do anything, especially climb. She squeezed her legs tight to the thread and slowly let herself slide down, using her functional hand to steady herself. She should have asked for help, but it certainly wasn’t going to be Kelly, and she vaguely recalled instructions from Ian to stay put.
To Adelaide’s delight, Kelly stayed rooted in place, though it was a little too close, and she could physically feel the eyes tracking her every move. When she made it to the ground, she flicked her hook off the table and eyed the pink socked feet standing less than a foot away. Adelaide steeled herself, then ran toward the heating vent. It took far too long due to her stubborn insistence on sticking close to the walls and refusing to cross the center of the room. The center was where giants walked. The center was a no-go zone.
When Adelaide made it a decent distance, she felt a tremor shake the ground. Startled, she glanced up. Kelly was following her. A comment about 'backing off' was on the tip of her tongue, but that probably wasn't nice. She didn’t know what else to say though, so she didn’t say anything - just took a deep breath and kept moving, trying to ignore the earthquakes in the ground and the massive presence casting a shadow on her.
Adelaide made it to the vent without incident. Thankfully, she was right. It was blowing heat. She collapsed in front of it, thrilled to have some kind of warmth. The towel was fine enough, but the large fibers were scratchy and the moving, heated air would dry her off faster. And it felt so good .
Another longer tremor shook her into active perception and she rolled over to see Kelly laying on her stomach. The girl crossed her arms and rested her head on them, studying Adelaide.
“Can I help you?” Adelaide asked through gritted teeth.
“Nah,” Kelly shrugged.
“Okay…um…what are you doing?”
“Looking.”
“Right,” Adelaide said uncomfortably and a bit awkwardly. She turned back toward the vent, then noticed something along the wall.
Tucked in the corner was a small hole expertly concealed by dark molding. Even Adelaide hardly noticed it, and she liked to think she was quite perceptive. Pushing herself to her feet, she inched toward the hole.  It could just be a mouse hole. Or a bug hole. Or just worn due to age. Or…
Even stronger shaking in the ground alerted Adelaide, but when she turned around, it wasn’t Kelly. Kelly was looking back over her shoulder at Ian and Sarah who had just returned.
Ian looked at the empty towel, then at his feet. He didn’t need to panic just yet. He knew when he asked Adelaide to stay there that there was a fifty percent chance she’d listen.
Kelly shot to her feet, not wanting to give Adelaide’s position away. She liked to think they were conspiring. Against what, exactly? Maybe her dad? It didn’t matter, but she wanted to protect her new friend.
Adelaide scrambled back when Kelly was suddenly on her feet and infinitely taller. She blocked the borrower’s view of Ian, but she couldn’t imagine he was very happy.
“Where’s Adelaide?”
Kelly made a noise that kind of sounded like ‘idunno’.
Ian thought his daughter was responsible (for the most part) and very smart. He hated to consider that she might have picked Adelaide up and stuffed her away. “Kelly…”
“I’m down here,” Adelaide sighed. A long lost feeling crept over her - one that she quite enjoyed. She realized that she kind of missed sneaking around, that she missed being this mysterious, unpredictable being who didn’t have to let the giant know when she went anywhere. She really didn’t want to give away what she was doing and she desperately wanted to explore Sarah’s walls.
Ian took Kelly by the shoulders and lightly moved her out of the way. He approached Adelaide and knelt down when he got close. “Why?”
“The vent,” Adelaide explained. “Heat.” She saw he was completely dry again and felt a hint of jealousy.
Ian noticed the hole in the wall behind Adelaide. He reached past her to poke his finger into it. “What’s this?” he asked.
Adelaide stepped back out of respect for the sheer size of his hand as it soared over and next to her body. The feeling of being cornered might have played a part in it as well. “That’s what I’m about to find out…And get your finger out of there.” She didn’t want to hint that there might be other borrowers. That wouldn’t be fair to them if they did exist. It was kind of hard to hide, though.
Ian was going to protest. He really wanted to. But he was trying to keep Adelaide’s request to trust her in mind. It was getting increasingly difficult. “Why don’t we - why don’t we rest for a while…first. You’re still soaked.”
“Vent. Heat,” Adelaide repeated matter-of-factly.
“You’ll have…oodles and uh, oodles of time to explore later. I promise.”
Adelaide could see him fighting with himself in his head. Maybe she would go later while the Beans slept. She didn’t think Ian would poke around, but given his recent protective streak, she wouldn’t put it past him to hover while she ventured through the walls.  She also appreciated the effort he put in to not just tell her to stop. Reluctantly, but with a small smile on her face anyway, Adelaide gave in. “Fine.”
Without warning, Ian scooped her up and cupped her to his chest. Adelaide fell back into his palm, trying to stay off her injured hand. “Ian Malcolm!” she complained.
Ian plopped down on the couch with a towel, all of the exhaustion finally oozing out of his body. Adelaide rolled around, trying to get herself upright, then used his arm as a bridge to the arm of the couch. Sarah and Kelly shortly joined them and not long after, Ian and Sarah were fast asleep.
Neither Adelaide nor Kelly found themselves that tired. Kelly busied herself with watching the TV, but seeing it was about Jurassic Park and the incident in San Diego, Adelaide decided to tune it out while she dried herself off. And after a while, even Kelly had to succumb to the exhaustion in her bones. Her head gave one final bob as she nodded off.
Bored, Adelaide wandered over to the side table. She eyed the massive phone sitting on a receiver, and an idea came to her. Ian vaguely showed her how to use a phone after they came back from Isla Nublar, and she thought she remembered most of it. If not, she could probably figure it out. How hard could it be?
Adelaide kicked at the phone, but it didn’t budge. Then she leaned her back up against it, using her legs to push backward.
The phone gave way and clattered loudly to the table below. Adelaide fell with it, and pain spiked up her hand. Beyond that, she was fine. She rose to her feet and dusted herself off, glancing at the Beans to see if she’d woken them up. They slept on.
The phone emitted a prolonged noise, and Adelaide absently hoped she didn’t break it.
She dug a piece of paper out from the bottom of her bag. It was soggy and soft and dirty and she could barely read the writing, but it was there.
Slowly, Adelaide clambered up onto the phone itself. It wobbled under her feet and she had to stick her arms out to maintain her balance. Looking from the paper to the phone, she stomped on the corresponding numbers. Then it rang.
Maybe she shouldn’t have done this. Maybe she was being rash. What would she even say? She didn’t know how to hang up though, so at this point, it was happening.
After two and a half rings, the voice of Dr. Ellie Sattler spoke through the phone. “Hello?”

Is This The Love (That I'm Feelin'?) Bob Floyd X Loot (PART 4)
Tumblr media
Archive of Our Own // Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 - Part 4 - Part 5 - Part 6
Summary: Bob & Loot get in a boat. They have a talk!
Warnings: Curses, boners, fluff.
Word count: 3,559
‘He’s sweet and I’m seeing him again today.’ You were pacing the almost threadbare rug in your apartment, biting your thumb nail as the familiar calming voice on the other end of the line helped you through your panic.
‘I should tell him, he should know.’ Across the rug and back again, catching a glimpse of yourself in the mirror.
‘Then tell him, if he’s worth it, he’ll understand.’
You let your hand fall to your side, stepping toward your reflection. ‘I think…I hope he is. I mean, I think he will understand.’
‘From what you’ve told me I’m guessing he’s a good dude, I wanna date him.’
Huffing a laugh, you actually caught yourself smiling, just thinking of him, Bob, he was almost your Bob. Just one more thing, one more hurdle.
‘I wanna date him, I need that.’
‘You deserve it,’ your friend spoke clearly, knowing you fully deserved any happiness that you could cling on to.
‘We both do, huh?’
Sighs book-ended, a silence settling. ‘Go have fun. Call me, whatever happens.’
You promised before hanging up. Running your fingers through your hair, gripping your scalp and squeezing your eyes shut. In a few hours, you’ll see Bob. Everything would be cool, he was solid, despite the shyness that seemed to render him speechless at times.
It was hot as hell outside, the air con was rattling louder than a street-car, you needed to get the damn thing looked at. A notification popped up on the phone still in your hand.
Bob: I packed lunch, you just gotta bring yourself.
Excitement was creeping into your bones, replacing the worry that had stopped you getting a good nights sleep. Were you even a good person? Bob deserved the best. You wanted so desperately for that to be you.
Bob was waiting for you on the dock. You spotted him right away, his hand was shielding his eyes, looking out to sea. Khaki shorts and pristine white socks. The man looked put together, as always. You imagined his living space; a place for everything and everything in its place.
‘Hey, you!’
He turned quickly, as if he was surprised by you showing up. Cracking a big smile he waved awkwardly, ‘hey, you.’
Stepping up to him, only a couple of inches shorter, you reached up and pressed a kiss to his mouth. It lingered for a moment, until he made that ‘mmm’ sound. Big hands settled on your arms, fingers wrapping around you, holding fast.
At least you were alone, just two of you on the dock in the late afternoon sunshine, water sloshing softly against the side of the boat.
You don’t remember when your fingers had started tugging at the roots of his hair, or your other hand squeezing gently at his ribs.
Bob sighed, ‘you gotta stop squeezing me.’ Noses touching, eyes closed.
‘I’m ticklish,’ he admitted, grinning.
You wanted to pull away, tell him that you wanted to talk, but these kisses were so good, his touches were gentle but demanding. He must have felt the tension a little, he gave your lips a quick kiss and squinted at you. ‘All good, Loot?’
‘Yeah, all good, Bob.’ You couldn’t, not now.
Taking your hand, he lifted his heavy backpack and slung it over his shoulder. Though he was tall and slim, you could see he had that hidden strength, the type of strength when a man will lift something ridiculously heavy and not even flinch. No macho shit either. You really fucking hated that.
Bob threw his bag down into the boat with a loud thunk, grimacing when he realised there were bottles of beer in there. ‘Oops.’
You laughed, making him crack another smile that made you wanna jump his bones right there.
‘Hop in, m’lady.’ Bob held you steady as you stepped down safely. The boat jiggled and righted itself as Bob climbed in behind you.
‘Ok, off we go.’
Bob felt his cheeks aches from how much he was smiling, being out with you on the calm waters. There really was no need to go too far out, you could still see people milling about on the shore. That was just perfect. A bottle of beer was standing between your feet, both hands wrapped around your sandwich, you didn’t realise how hungry you were.
Neither of you had eaten today, both anxious for different reasons.
Bob had butterflies in his stomach, things were going so well that he though maybe tonight you could take it a little further. In Bob’s mind, that was you coming back to his and showing you his record collection, and most definitely staying the night so he could be big spoon and feel you sleep next to him.
He had bought eggs, just in case you liked eggs for breakfast.
‘What’re you doin’ later,’ he blurted, imagining his fingertips running across the top of your shirt, the small bit of cleavage on show for him. Coz it was for him.
‘I was hoping we could hang out, talk some.’ You gulped the last of the cold beer.
‘Sure we can, I’d like that. And next weekend?’ He pressed.
You raised a brow at him, just as you did the first night you’d come to talk to him at the party.
Before you could answer, Bob held out his hand to take yours, fingers intertwining across your lap. His thumb was gliding gently back and forth across the back of your hand.
The look in his eye had you melting, there was a chance you would leave your physical body and turn into water vapour that rises from the wooden fences in the morning sun, just like that memory of your child hood that would come back to you in flashes. You started. Making him almost pull his hand away until you gripped it a little harder than you meant. The look of pure hope and lust that had been on his face was eclipsed by concern.
‘Am I movin’ too fast?’ Bob whispered.
‘No, you’re not. Maybe a little slower than I’d like but I wanna enjoy this.’ You brought his hand to your lips, kissing each knuckle while he watched, his mouth slack. He near leaped across the gap between you and let his mouth find yours in a fevered, searing kiss. His tongue slipped past your lips, tasting the beer in your mouth.
‘Is this somewhere in the middle?’ Bob took a breath before attacking your mouth again, unwinding your entangled fingers, he placed his hands high on your ribs, bracketing your breasts. Both of you were twitching and trying to reposition yourselves to be closer, but how much of you could touch in this tiny, awkward row boat?
Shifting your butt off the ledge, you sank down into the belly of the boat, letting Bob climb over you. ‘Bob, you are so fucking sexy.’ You gasped, feeling his tongue on your neck, sucking softly down your throat, you could feel his mouth turn into a smile as he continued kissing down to the top of your breasts, his nose drew a line through your cleavage. A piece of hair fell loose, tickling your overheated skin. ‘Should I stop?’ Bob’s voice was muffled, his face pressed into the soft swell of your tits.
‘Hell no. And just for the record, I think you’re a gentleman.’
Bob’s hands moved achingly slow, you willed him to hurry up and start squeezing you, grind against you, anything, you’d take anything!
Your breathy moans were sending him to the edge, he could feel you writhing underneath him within the confines of the boat and you felt so damn good.
‘Loot, if you keep grinding against me I don’t think I can be gentlemanly much longer.’ He tasted the skin under your ear, tongue on your pulse.
You were pulling at his hair, fuck he’d cum in a minute if this didn’t stop.
He really didn’t wanna cum in his shorts like the desperate little teenager he’d been. It was so easy to bring him to the edge with some praise, he wanted to be good for you, honestly, he wanted to be the best version of himself for you.
‘These beer bottles are digging into my back. Do you think we could take this some place else?’
Bob nodded, breathing heavily, willing for the ache in his cock to subside. Somewhat glad that you had expressed discomfort, otherwise he would have been ok taking you right here, the thoughts of your warm heat around him, squeezing his cock, hands on his ass….he was almost there.
‘Fuck, ok, ok.’ Bob moved away from you, sitting back on his heels, watching you squirm around until you sat back on the ledge.
You could see the bulge at the front of his pants.
Bob’s face was flushed and he was looking anywhere but at you. Fuck, was he embarrassed.
‘Hey, I want you, I do.’
‘I know,’ he choked on an attempt to laugh. ‘Clearly I want you too. I think I….I think I always have. Since, you know, seeing you on base, a while back.’
‘I just didn’t think you’d ever see me.’
‘I most definitely did, I noticed those piercing blue eyes watching me every morning in the hallway.’
Bob put his hands on his knees, looking out across the water again. He didn’t want to look at you just yet. He wanted to be vulnerable and tell you exactly what he wanted, but what if you didn’t feel the same? In all honesty, Bob knew it would take him a lifetime to get over you, even after two and a half dates, he counted the making out in a the closet as a half date.
You could see he was still hard and you were aching to reach out and touch him, make him feel good. wanting to see his head thrown back in pleasure, mouth open and whining while you jerked him off.
‘Bob,’ your calm voice belied the fire in your soul.
Finally, he turned his face to look at you. ‘Let’s get back to shore.’
‘Are you finishing the date early? I’m sorry if I took it too far.’ Bob swallowed hard, feeling like he would cry if you never wanted to see him again.
‘Hell no. I would like to get back and get out of this heat. Coz you are looking like a tall, cold glass of water right now.’
Bob pursed his lips, trying and failing not to laugh. ‘Well, thank you.’
Neither of you took your eyes off each other while Bob rowed back, muscles easing and tensing as he pulled the oars through the water.
Neither of you spoke while he tied up the boat and you hopped up onto the dock with his backpack against your chest.
Nothing on this earth would burst this bubble of want between you right now. You had to have him, he was gonna be your Bob from this moment.
His quiet intensity mirrored yours.
‘Come on,’ he said eventually, holding out his hand. You took it, moving closer so your hips were touching while you walked.
‘Mine or yours?’ Bob squeezed your hand while you considered.
‘Mine.’ That was it then, the finality, he could always walk out if he didn’t like what you wanted to say.
Your air conditioning unit rattled to life while Bob took in your small living room. You had set up mood lights in nearly every free space but it was neat, tidy, girly. A fluffy cushion peeking out under a crochet blanket on the back of your armchair. Everything was set up for you, it was perfectly you.
There were a few framed photos on the wall next to him. One was you with your graduating class from the Navy. Most were who he presumed were your friends, no one looked like you; no family. Bob scratched his chin, curious.
‘Come sit by me,’ you laid your hand out on the cushion next to you.
Bob settled in, moving so you could fit in next to him. And you did, you moulded in to the parts of him you fit so nicely in to while he stroked your hair and kissed your forehead.
‘This is nice,’ he whispered sleepily. The heat of the day was catching up to you both.
‘Wanna go for a nap?’ You suggested, putting off ‘the talk’ for as long as you could.
Bob’s eyes were puffy, a lazy grin on his face while he nodded in agreement and let you lead him to your bedroom.
Bob kicked off his shoes while you crawled up toward the pillows, opening your arms out so he could join you.
‘Uhm, is this a pants off kinda nap?’ Bob fiddled with the waistband of his shorts.
‘Yeah, I think it’s a pants off kinda nap,’ you agreed, lifting your hips off the bed to pull off your own cut offs.
Bob shuffled out of his, revealing a tight pair of black boxer briefs, his bulge was mouth watering. You sneaked a quick look as he shifted closer to you on the bed. He didn’t have an erection but boy, just looking at that bulge you knew he had a monster between his legs.
After a moment of smiling and not saying anything at all, he inched closer, throwing his arm around you, kissing you gently. The heated passion had dissipated for now. There were long, sweet kisses and breathing in each other before his eyes closed and he drifted off to sleep, hands clasped.
You’d slept for maybe an hour before you jolted awake, Bob was still sleeping, his mouth open a little. Was it creepy to lay here and just look at him? In all surety you knew you wanted to do that for the rest of your life.
Sneaking from the bedroom you used the bathroom and checked your face, it was a little hot from the sun earlier but no damage done. You moisturised, brushed your hair and used some mouth wash before slipping back into bed next to Bob, who reached out for you immediately.
‘Where’d you go?’ His voice raspy with sleep.
‘Just to get pretty for you.’
‘You’re always pretty,’ he said, pressing his mouth into your neck. Lifting his head from the pillow suddenly, eyes wide. ‘I gotta pee real bad.’
You giggled as he hopped up, looking to you with panic in his eyes as you pointed to where your bathroom was.
He returned with relief on his face.
‘I hope you don’t mind I used some mouthwash.’ Bob bounced up onto the bed, full of the joys of spring, smiling down at you.
‘I wanna kiss you some more, if you’d allow it.’ You were both a little giggly, being here together, with less clothes.
‘I will allow it, Lieutenant Floyd.’
Bob melted into you, kissing you slowly at first, breathing heavily as your tongues started to move against each other. His hand was resting on your hip for a time, you felt him moving slowing down until he began palming at your ass. An exhale became a groan, a sound so sinful from you that he doubled down on his groping.
Lips messily finding someplace to land on exposed flesh, the symphony of your breaths was filling the small space around you. Like they were always meant to be heard that way.
‘Bob, stop.’ Your hand met his chest and pushed him, just slightly.
His stomach dropped. ‘Ok.’ It wasn’t what he wanted to hear, but he could wait, he didn’t want to force you into anything.
‘I need to tell you something,’ sitting up and wrapping your arms around your knees you waited for him to adjust himself and sit up, a crease between his eyebrows as he studied your face.
‘What is it? You can tell me anything?’
A whole host of things crossed his mind at that moment.
You’d never done it before, you wanted to wait til marriage, you didn’t like him that much, you never wanted to see him again.
The blood rushed around his head, mouth drying up as he heard you say it.
‘Bob… I’m married.’
How could that be? He’d never seen you with anyone, there was no ring, no man living here, no wedding photographs. No one on on base had even warned him.
You could see the shock wash over him, it broke your heart. He was clenching his jaw, his eyes darting around the room but looking at nothing at all. Absorbing that horrid piece of information you wished in that moment wasn’t true, that it was a bad joke.
‘You..’ he started, clamming up. ‘Why didn’t you tell me before…’ He wanted to say before I fell for you.
Why would you lead him on like this? You felt like the worst person in the world. He looked so fucking betrayed.
‘I’m legally married, I have to tell you that. But I’m not married for any other reason other than it was for convenience…protection.’
A look of understanding replaced the pinched concern, it dawned on him.
‘Your upbringing? The cult?
You just nodded.
He got up from the bed, the boner he’d been working on was long dead. There was nothing Loot could say right now to bring that back. Pacing, he ran his hand through his hair, across the stubble starting on his cheeks. Everything had been so perfect.
He’d thought you were the one, you were it for him. It was crumbling, the walls collapsing in on him.
‘Bob, I wanted to tell you from the get-go but you were so perfect, I didn’t want to spoil it, I didn’t want you to tell me no straight away.’
‘So you wanted to toy with me a bit?’ Bob narrowed his eyes, no one knew how quickly Bob could spit venom if someone started fucking with him.
‘Never. That was never my intention. It was a marriage to protect me when I left home. My family has a fucked up sense of ownership.’
‘So your husband owns you? Is he gonna burst though that front door and beat the hell outta me for fucking with his wife?’
His words stung. It was bound to happen, you’d hoped he’d understand right away. But he didn’t, who would?
‘It’s not like that, I will explain if you want to hear it.’
‘Fuck me,’ Bob felt the tears springing to his eyes, he’d let them fall, he needed them to. This hurt.
There was silence between you, the only sounds were the struggling whirs of the air conditioner in the next room and Bob trying to breathe. He was trying to calm himself; eyes squeezed shut, hands over his ears.
‘Do you wanna sit?’ Your voice was sad. So fucking sad, Bob thought. But he looked you like you were the last person in the world he would want to sit with. Like you just punched his grandma.
He held your gaze for a minute before grabbing his shorts from the floor.
Usually you were strong, you could keep yourself together out of pride, you never liked anyone seeing you vulnerable. So you bit the inside of your cheek and just watched him dress. His hair had come loose from your hands, it sat across his forehead, covering his ears when he finally relaxed his hands and turned to you.
‘I just need to think about this, Loot. I’m sorry.’
You nodded. He disappeared without a kiss or a touch or even a backwards glance.
Before you started to cry, you found your phone in your shorts and clicked call next to David’s name.
‘Well?’ He didn’t answer with a hello.
‘He freaked out a bit and left.’ Your shoulders slumped.
‘Oh sweetie, I’m sorry.’ He really did sound it.
You spent an hour on the phone, pacing, biting your nails. You hadn’t bothered putting your shorts back on. ‘I never date anyone on base, this is why! Now I have to go back to work on Monday and see him and he won’t look at me in the hallway like he always does. Fuck!’
David tried is best to be a good friend and listen, he even suggested you go find him and explain the situation, if he’d listen. You were both sure Bob would listen.
Just as you were going to find some new clothes to wear, there was a knock at the door.
David was playing out the whole scenario for you, what to say, when to pause for Bob’s reactions when you pulled open your front door.
‘Sorry David, I gotta go, Bob is standing on my front step with flowers.’
You blindly thumbed at the hang up button and blinked at Bob.
‘Sorry, I ran out.’ His hair was still a mess. You wanted to kiss him silly. ‘I’m hell-bent on loving you, please tell me what my chances are.’
His eyes were shining, he had cried, you could tell and you wanted him so bad because of it. Bob walked into the living room when you stepped aside to let him in.
‘Loot, you’re not wearing any pants.’ He chuckled despite the tightness in his chest.
That’s a good sign, you thought.

Gentle love prompts #41. Not letting them go when hugging
Hol Horse/reader (gender neutral reader)
You’re on Texas’s Galveston Island with Hol for a weekend getaway. He’s been showing you around the places he remembers fondly from his past visits: a bar near your hotel, a chocolate shop on the Strand, and his favorite fishing spot. Of course, you’ve spent some time on the beach, too. Now he’s driven you all the way to the east end of the island, past the bridge you’d driven over when you’d arrived.
“Here we are.” He says, pulling into a ferry loading lane.
“Where does the ferry go?” You ask, watching the cars ahead of you pull onto the ferry as you inch forward.
“Port Bolivar. Not much to see there. They’ve got a retired lighthouse and an old fort, but it’s more of a gateway to the rest of the peninsula.”
“Then why are we going there?”
“Just to ride the ferry. We’ll have to turn around and take the next one back too, unless you wanna see the park at the fort.” He says as your turn to board comes, and you pass over the loading ramp with a bump. “It’s nice, it’s free, and sometimes you can see dolphins.”
He pulls up until the reflective-vested workers gesture for him to stop. He turns the car off and pulls the parking brake, following the instructions on the signs scattered around the deck. Then he unbuckles his seat belt.
“Come on, we’re gettin’ out.” He hops out and you follow him, slipping between cars to the walkway near the side of the boat.
“We’re goin’ up to the front, you can see better there.”
“Isn’t the front on a boat called the prow or something?”
“Honey, I’m a cowboy, not a sailor.” He laughs as you come to stand near the chain keeping passengers away from the very front of the boat, which lowers into the loading and unloading ramp. There’s a good view from here, and the sea breeze on your face is nice.
There’s a small jolt as the ferry’s engines start up and it begins to pull away from the dock. You sway into Hol with the motion, looping your arm around his waist in a side hug and not letting go of him.
“It’s not gonna be that rough, you don’t need to hold on to me.” He says, and you smile at him with a wink.
“Maybe I want to.”
“No complaints here.” He grins and throws an arm across your shoulders. The stronger breeze of the boat’s forward motion and the spray from the sea splashing at the side near you are cooling. At the back of the boat, people are throwing scraps of food to noisy gulls. You watch pelicans floating on the water pass by, scanning for the dolphins Hol had said you might see.
The trip isn’t very long, maybe twenty minutes, so it doesn’t take long before you can see the other dock. Hol gives you a squeeze and lets you go.
“Let’s get back to the car. Gotta be ready to get off.”
You follow him back as the engines audibly slow down on approach. You buckle up again, and soon the front ramp has been lowered and the first cars are being waved off. When it’s your turn, Hol has to drive a little ways down the road to find a place to turn around. And then you’re back in the loading line to do it again.
You repeat the whole process from before, standing at the front of the boat again once you’re underway. You keep an eye out again for dolphins. You watch a bird dive and come up with a fish in its beak, and the wind picks up enough that Hol has to tie the strings of his hat in case it blows off his head, but you don’t see any dolphins. Not until-
“Over there.” Hol pulls you close to point at something a ways away from the boat. You look closely, and there they are: the dorsal fins and curved backs of dolphins jumping and playing at the surface. It looks like there are four or five of them, but it’s hard to count when you can’t see them all at one time.
You watch them until you can’t find them again. Maybe they’ve moved on, or maybe the boat has left them behind. Either way, the return trip comes to and end, and you’re soon back in the car driving away from the dock in the direction of your hotel.
“That was pretty cool.” You decide, watching the seawall pass by your window. “Thanks for showing me.
“Glad you liked it. Tomorrow we can try some of the museums around town. I’ve never been, myself.”
“Not much of a museum-goer in your youth?” You tease, and he shakes his head.
“I’m hardly a museum-goer now, but I think you’ll like ‘em.”
It’s sweet that he’s planned activities just for you. You’re looking forward to it.

"Shit.. shit shit shit no! Come on.." John B says as we slow to a stop, in the marsh still a ways away from land. I look up from where I had my head pressed to his back. I spent most of the drive back sobbing, and I just stopped, but apparently, there is no time to relax.
"Fuck. I sigh, hugging John B tighter for a moment.
"We've gotta swim." He says, turning to look back at me. I nod softly, and swing my leg over, steadying myself before jumping in, and John B follows behind me. We swim back to shore as fast as we can manage, and John B leads me to a property with a very colorful house. Lana Grubbs.
"Wait- John B." I stop him, placing my hand on his forearm and he turns, eyes read and chest heaving. He's angry- and who wouldn't be? I am too. "Here... I, uh... I found this. On the boat." I say, digging in my soaked shorts pocket and pulling out the watch, holding it out to him.
He stares down at my hand, slowly reaching out and taking it from me before turning it over in his palm. He nods softly and his lip quivers. Before I can think about it, I'm wrapping my arms around him in a hug. "I'm so sorry..." I say, feeling him squeezing me back.
"Thank you." He whispers, afraid that if he talks any louder he'll burst into tears.
After a few moments, we walk up to the door, and John B opens the screen door. We see Mrs. Grubbs standing there making tea. She looks up at us, saying nothing.
"I need to know." John B says.
*:・゚✧*:・゚
The whole walk home after our talk with Lana was silent- I tried to talk to John B more but he wasn't having it. We eventually return to The Chateau, where everyone else is waiting for us and prepping the pully system we made to remove the gold from the well. John B storms inside, shoving past anyone who gets in his way. He's furious- understandably. I decide not to say anything to everyone until he does- it is very much his story to tell. We all watch as he grabs the gun, and then we follow him out to JJ's bike, which he hops on as everyone bombards him with questions.
"John B, please, talk to us." I say, feeling tears on my cheeks again. I'm heartbroken for him.
"Ward knows about the gold. He killed my dad." He says, and everyone is shocked. Just then, John B speeds off, leaving me to pick up the pieces and fill in the blanks of the bomb he just dropped on everyone.
Instantly, everyone looks at me. "He's gonna kill Ward..." I mumble, still in shock after the events of the day.
"What happened, Snowy?" Pope asks me.
"It- it's a long story." I sigh, wiping under my eyes. "Ward wanted a cut if he could help us with legal crap with the gold, and then when John B realized he had killed Big John, Ward tried to kill us too. He shot a spear right at me. It missed by like an inch." I explain. "He literally tried to kill us."
"Holy shit- man, he's definitely going after Ward." JJ sighs, running his hand through his hair.
"I... I need to call Rafe. Like, right now." I say quietly, ignoring everyone as they talk about what to do next. "Kie, can I have your phone? Please?" I ask and she looks at me, seeming confused and obviously upset.
"No, we need to call the cops, you can't call your boyfriend right now." She says, pulling it out of her pocket as I grab it right out of her hands.
"He's Ward's son, Kie, he might be able to help- or do something, I need to tell him."
"You're not telling him anything." JJ shakes his head.
"I can't tell him his dad just tried to shoot me? It seems relevant to what we're going to do- maybe he can distract his dad or something so John B doesn't get to him first and kill him! It will buy us time- if nothing else." I say quickly, unsure if anything was even English.
"Guys, she's right. We need time- and I don't think we have any better ideas." Pope agrees with me.
"Thank you." I sigh, opening Kie's phone finally and stepping away to call Rafe.
It rings for what feels like an eternity before he picks up. "Hello?"
"Rafe? It's Snowy."
"Oh, hey, what can I do for you, baby? Why didn't you call with your phone?"
"Rafe, I-" I break down at this point. I don't know what to say, there was a moment this morning when I didn't ever think I would hear his voice again.
"What's the matter?" He asks, sounding worried.
"Where- where is your dad?" I ask, trying to pull it together.
"I- I don't know, why? Are you okay?"
"I need your help, okay? Can you help?" I ask him.
"Alright... Yeah, of course, anything. Where are you?" He asks as Kie runs up to me.
"We're taking the boat, and we're going to go there to see if we can find John B." She tells me and I nod, waving them off.
"I'm at the Chateau, but don't come here. Please, just see if you can find your dad okay? And don't tell him I talked to you. He can't know, okay?"
"Okay, yeah.." Rafe agrees hesitantly. "Please, tell me what happened. You're crying right now, something is wrong, so just let me come help you."
I shake my head a little as I sob into the phone. "Can you come to get me instead? Please? I changed my mind. My friends are leaving now, I don't want to be alone. Please." I sniffle.
"Alright, I'll be there in ten minutes, okay? Hold tight. I'll be right there." He says and I nod as if he can see me, and then he hangs up.
Rafe must have sped here, because he arrives much faster than he said, jumping out of the car and jogging up to me where I'm sitting on the porch.
"Snowy, hey, hey, are you hurt? What's happening?" He asks, pulling me into his arms as I stand up to greet him.
"I'm okay.." I say shakily.
"What happened?" He says, pulling away and grabbing my shoulders, looking me up and down to see if I'm injured at all.
"Nothing- I, nothing happened, I just need you here." I lie, my voice shaking as I hug him again and he sighs, resting his hand on the back of my head.
"What about my dad? Why were you asking about him?" He asks worriedly.
"I- uhm.." I should at least tell him some of the truth. "We think he killed Big John, and John B came home and stormed out with a gun, so I was worried he'd go after him." I explain.
"My dad? No. No, no, no, he didn't kill anyone, okay? I know he didn't do that." Rafe insists, and I nod a little as I look down.
"Look, I told you, and Kegs has told you, these Pogues are crazy, Snow- they're putting these insane ideas in your head, and, and, you can't keep listening to this. I'm sorry, but I can't watch them hurt you like this anymore, put you in danger over and over again, I just can't do that." He says, looking down at me, then running his hand through his messy hair. "Look, let's just go back to where I'm crashing, okay? Come and stay with me for a couple of days. Get your mind off this- you need a break from them."
I nod and he takes my hand, leading me back to his car and helping me in. "You're gonna be okay, alright? You're safe with me." Rafe says, leaning over and giving me a kiss on the cheek.
*:・゚✧*:・゚
Rafe takes me back to the house he's staying at, which I don't recognize at all. We decide to order some food, but I feel so sick about what happened that I can hardly eat. We're sitting at the dining table, and I'm just picking my food apart.
"Snowy, you need to eat that. Seriously." Rafe tells me, and I notice he's already done.
I sigh a little bit and push my hair back behind my ears. "I just don't feel hungry. I think it's stress."
"See? This is what those Pogues are doing to you. They're killing you, you need to eat." Rafe insists.
"I will." I agree, nodding softly. "Do you have any weed?" I ask him, leaning my elbow on the table.
"I, well, yeah, I do. Do you want some?" He asks, holding his thumb up over his shoulder, offering to go get it.
"Yeah, I think it would help." I grin, and he nods as he gets up and runs upstairs. I pull out Kie's phone and text my friends.
K: find jb?
P: yeah, he's fine. we're back at the chat.
JJ: where'd you go snowy white?
K: i'm with rafe at the place he's crashing at. everyone okay over there?
P: we're all fine, ward lives to see another sunset
JJ: bad news tho, gold is gone.
I sigh and put the phone back in my pocket. Of course, Ward got the gold. Just like that, our hopes were crushed. I guess we still have my plan B, but I don't actually think I have the heart to do that to Rafe.
Rafe comes back down the stairs, holding up a zip lock bag and his bong, shaking them a little as he speaks. "Let's go out on the deck?" He asks, and I nod, getting up and following him outside.
After being friends with JJ and John B for so long, my tolerance is pretty high, so it takes a little while for me to actually feel anything. The first time I ever smoked it was the three of us with Big John, and I'm not sure I've ever had so much fun. Kie was in her kook era, but at the time we didn't need her. I never felt out of place with them, especially with Big John there, who treated me like his own daughter. I miss him every day, it's hard for me to finally swallow the truth, that he is dead; even if I kind of already knew that.
I find myself giggling as I remember that day, out on the porch of the chat. I was coughing my lungs out, and Big John was rubbing my back. He really was so kind.
"Is it finally hitting?" Rafe asks, grinning at me as I look up at him, a smile still spread across my face.
"Yeah, sorta." I admit. "I was just thinking about the first time I ever smoked." I tell him and he laughs a little.
"Oh yeah? How did that go for you?"
"It was good. I mean, I thought I was dying for a bit, but it was still fun." I shrug. "Big John bought it for us after John B beat him at poker. He had the condition that we had to share it with him, so obviously we did, but he wasn't weird about it or anything."
"Big John?" Rafe asks, and it seems I've piqued his interest. "You were close with him, hey?"
"Yeah," I nod, looking down at my hands in my lap and my smile fades. "He was like a father to me. That sounds so stupid, but he really looked out for me. He cared for me when my parents were focused on Kegs and the twins, so pretty much always." I explain.
Rafe nods a little. "Yeah, I've been meaning to ask you about how you're doing, with that, uhm, that situation."
That's so sweet. "I'm good, you know. Up until this morning, I was doing fine." I say, not really wanting to think about what happened to him at the hands of this boy's father. Luckily, weed is my friend and the thought is quickly lost.
"Yeah, I couldn't imagine what you guys went through..." Rafe says, and it's pretty obvious he doesn't know what to say. "If I can help, you know, if I can do anything, tell me, alright?"
I smile at that. "Thank you, Rafe... You know I'd do anything for you, too."
"Yeah, so... So, so, do you mean anything?" He asks with a slight smirk and I nod, leaning closer to him a little.
"Anything," I whisper, my lips just inches from his now. He looks down at my lips and then back into my eyes before leaning in to kiss me.
It's a matter of seconds before it starts to get a bit more heated, and then he pulls away, holding my cheek.
"Anything?" Rafe asks again and I nod, biting my bottom lip. "Come with me." He says, getting up and grabbing my hand to help me up.
I follow him back inside, looking back at the stuff we left behind us on the deck as the door closes behind us. I know I shouldn't be okay with this- I remember what happened to me this morning, but I feel so disconnected from that fear in this moment, so I decide to let it go.
We get upstairs and he turns me around, grabbing my hips and kissing me as he slowly walks me back towards the bed. "So, I've kind of been having this dream, lately..." He mumbles into my lips as he pushes me back so I'm laying down, my legs hanging off the edge of the bed as he leans over me. I hum back against his lips, letting him know I'm listening.
"I just, I think you're so hot, and I really want to do this so just hear me out, okay?" He says, sounding almost nervous, which makes me hesitate. I don't think I'm about to do anything crazy the first time we sleep together. But of course, I'll hear him out.
"Yeah? What is it?" I ask, smiling at him as I play with his hair, both my arms wrapped around his neck.
"I want to do a line off you." He says, and I feel my eyes widen a little but I try not to freak out. He's supposed to be quitting coke.
"I, well..." I start, still trying to figure out how to word this without him thinking I'm shutting him down.
"Snowy, please, I'm trying to get clean I promise, I just- I've dreamt about this. Please, just one..." He pleads, kissing down my neck.
I sigh a little, my eyes fluttering closed. How could I say no? It's not like he's supposed to stop all at once anyways.
"Yeah, yeah. Of course..." I whisper, and he stops and looks up at me, a slight smile showing on his lips.
"You're amazing." He smiles, kissing me again for a few seconds before getting up, going over to his backpack in the corner, and pulling out a bag full of white powder and a credit card. I can't believe I'm about to let this happen, but I suppose it could be much worse.
He comes back over and kneels down in front of me as I look up at the ceiling. I don't want to watch. I feel his warm hands against the skin on my thighs, and I giggle as he places a few kisses on my skin before getting to work making his line. I focus on taking deep breaths while he does it, then goes back to kissing my thighs. I look down at him, sitting up a little and smiling at him.
"Fuck- I'm obsessed with you, Juliette." He mumbles, smiling as he climbs back on top of me and connects our lips again.

continuing to juggle wildfire and hl&s. first, a nice emotional tracey and jestiny bonding scene from wildfire chapter 18 (slight drug warning):
She scoffed. “There wasn’t exactly a shitton left for me to go back to in Portland,” she replied, shrugging her shoulders. “No family. No home. And I fucked up and brought the one friend I had here. To them.”
Jessie swallowed, fingers fidgeting with the bandage on her arm. She reached to lift the joint from its place between Tracey’s fingers, inhaling properly around it this time. Maybe she could use a hit. Anything to make her head feel lighter.
She coughed hard enough for her eyes to water, trying to assuage the dry sputter of her throat with a swallow of beer.
“Beer’s kinda watery,” she noted.
“You’d think that, when you’re used to drinking toxic sludge,” Tracey replied. “The beer you drink tastes like fucking shit, Jessie.”
“Your palate is so fuckin’ unrefined, it’s unreal.”
“Yours is like, honest to fucking god pathological. I think it’s the shit they teach you to look out for to spot serial killers.”
Jestiny shook with laughter, leaning forward to rest her forearms on her thighs and playfully crinkle her nose at Tracey. “Maybe I’d fit in good with the peggies,” she teased with a wriggle of her eyebrows. “Think they’d be impressed enough with my killing talents to make an exception and let me keep drinking the IPAs?”
Tracey’s smile fell.
Jestiny considered that possibly she hadn’t found Tracey’s joke that funny, either.
aaand a little bit from the story that actually matters. hl&s chapter 2:
“Now, if you’ll excuse us, Mrs. Drubman.” He pressed his right arm flat against his abdomen and bent at the waist in a half-bow that put his head near even with Adelaide’s cleavage, bringing his left hand to rest against the small of Jessie’s back. “As much as I’d love to stay and chat, I’m afraid I won’t have any chance of charming my date myself if I’m competing with you.”
He pressed his hand against Jessie’s back to guide her the remaining distance towards the boat — only to have the hand elbowed away, as if she’d once again forgotten they were supposed to be acting like a happy couple.
But before he could shoot her a proper glare in reminder she wrapped her arm around his to tug him along instead, nearly causing him to stumble off the dock from her clumsily effort to cover her slip up.
“I’ll leave you crazy kids to it, then,” Adelaide chimed with a parting wave. “Happy catchin’!”
As John climbed into the boat he caught in his periphery a manicured hand reaching out to grab to the grubby, calloused one dropping a tackle box and set of fishing poles over the side.
“And sugar,” he heard Adelaide whisper to the redhead she held back. “You gotta let me know if it winds up he puts out, alright?”
He could see Jessie’s look of earnest confusion reflected in the windshield.
“Uh, I guess,” she rasped in reply, even more conspicuous yet. “I mean, why wouldn’t he?”
“My dear,” John turned to cut in before the pair could whisper more gossip, holding out the palm of his hand in offering to receive Jessie’s and assist her in climbing into the boat.
She recoiled, looking at the hand as if it might as well have held a dead rat as she stepped to the side of it and hopped onto the boat.
Yes, this was certainly a mistake.

SOMETHING INFINITE • PART THREE J U S T W A N N A S E E Y O U
part three of something infinite – finally a day off and you’re all heading to the lake to fish and swim and drink and it feels like summer and fresh starts and you’re surprised to find you get one of your own | ( 3.3k, angst, tiny bit of fluff if you squint, enemies to lovers, steve x you, steve x reader – find the rest of the series and more here and find the series playlist on spotify here )
J U N E 1 9 8 7 🎶 never be ourselves, savannah conley
The sky was awake ages before you were, summer sun painting the clouds cotton candy pink and sunflower yellow. The sounds of crickets and frogs had faded and your eyes were still puffy and full of sleep when Jonathan shook your shoulder awake.
“C’mon, gotta get a good spot,” he gave you one of his soft, but playful Jonathan grins and you couldn’t help grinning yourself.
Finally you had a day off. Not that putting books away was anything hard, but as the sun fell through your open window you could feel the potential the day held. Everyone was going to the lake, the boys wanted to fish, and Eddie had promised beer and spliffs and you could already feel the sand between your toes.
When you fell into the back of the Wheeler’s station wagon next to Dustin your hair was still all messy sheets and morning, but nobody else looked any better and you couldn’t help laughing at the state of you all.
“What?” Dustin had asked, voice still scratchy from sleep, and you answered by roughing up his curls.
Nancy rolled the windows down as you bumped out of town into the woods, the air already warm and thick and fuzzy as it wrapped around you. Hop’s boat and fishing poles were up top of the station wagon and Eddie was trailing behind you in his van with Robin in tow. The trees and leaves and clouds flung shadows across the seat and your legs as you went and everything smelled like cedar, like moss and bonfires and summer and you closed your eyes for a minute.
This was nothing like Indianapolis. No climbing fire escapes at 1am, no paper bag bottles in back alleys, no running so fast from the cops you could hear your heartbeat in your ears. This was late nights eating dry Honeycomb from the box and whole cans of Pringles. A pile of tangled limbs in the back of Jonathan’s truck at the drive-in. Your skateboard wheels rough on the pavement like Max’s with Lucas and Dustin and Mike spinning bikes and spokes alongside you. This was lazy and slow and smooth like molasses. Easy, like breathing, and when you felt the car crunch into gravel off the pavement you opened your eyes again.
“First ones here!” Lucas’ squeal woke Max up and she slapped a hand against his chest.
“People are trying to sleep, genius,” she grumbled, head lolling back on the seat.
Mike and Will were busy pointing out all the best spots for fishing, Dustin peeking over the bench to get a better look as Nancy pulled off the road into the long grass. There was no gravel there, just dirt and molehills and wildflowers and when the car finally stopped next to the lake you thought you’d never heard something more quiet and alive in your life.
Mourning dove calls echoed through the birch trees, the buzz of cicadas just picking up, and the soft static of the lake lapping up the rocky shore chased off sleep better than any alarm could. How had your mom hidden this tiny treasure from you for so long? You felt the corners of your lips tug up into a smile.
“Nice, right?” you hadn’t realized Lucas had lifted the back hatch for you to get out. When he caught the look on your face he gave you a grin.
“Yeah,” you breathed, piling out of the car after Dustin, feet kicking dandelion seeds up into the breeze, long grass dancing around your knees as the sun lit the sky on fire.
It couldn’t have been any later than 9am, but you could already feel your skin all dewy in the warm, thick, summer air. Tangerine swimsuit ties peeked out from the waistband of your jean shorts and cut-off shirt, a spare of Jonathan’s sunglasses perched on your head, the very picture of June and July and August, and your smile grew.
“Day’s not gettin’ any longer!” Eddie hollered out his window. He pulled up next to the station wagon, the sounds of Black Sabbath setting the little spark in your chest alight.
“Eddie!” the boys were on him in an instant, their ever fearless Dungeon Master arriving at last. The heavy van door rolled open to loose Robin with a joint already tucked between her lips and she climbed out to stretch her lanky frame.
“God, this place is so pretty it’s almost gross,” she mumbled, sunglasses crooked on her nose. You huffed a laugh as she groaned, “Eds, I’m gonna need a beer.”
“Aye aye,” he quipped, scurrying around the back of the van for the cooler. He was clearly the only morning person of the group. You were about to offer a hand, but something, someone, caught your eye.
A pair of dirty, beat up Blazers, skin all golden and dotted with moles and freckles, eyes like honey and hair a riot – your stomach flipped over.
“Jesus, beer me too, too damn early.”
Steve hadn’t seen you yet, moving without hesitation for Eddie and the cooler, and for a split second you felt like you were back in middle school. Like you wanted to hide. Like you’d seen someone you weren’t sure of. Someone you didn’t want to talk to. But your morbid curiosity kept your feet planted and when he came back into view you quickly turned away, hoping he hadn’t seen you staring.
No luck.
“Morning, sunshine,” you could hear the grin on his lips. At least he hadn’t called you princess.
Pulling your bottom lip between your teeth you took in a breath, but Dustin saved you from the obligation of a response, “Whoa, you guys know each other?”
“Unfortunately,” you quipped recovering quickly, gaining a snicker from Lucas and Max as you turned back around. Steve gave you a look and you replied wordlessly with a sugary, sweet smile.
“Cute,” he snarked, lips twisting in a tiny scowl as Eddie shoved a beer into his hands.
“Boooooring,” Robin droned, giving Steve a shove as she walked past him and grabbed your hand, “Less talking, more swimming.”
It felt so strange watching Steve with everyone, how he made them laugh and smile. You’d expected them to have to get on him about being an ass, about his shitty comments and judging stares, but it didn’t happen. It was like everyone knew something about him that you didn’t. They all gave him the benefit of the doubt.
Their laughter and teasing coming so easily as they threw worms from the bait bucket at each other or splashed lake water into beer cans and stole sunglasses from atop their heads. And oh my god, the way he took care of the younger kids. Getting on them about sunscreen and telling Lucas to get a life jacket or Dustin that his walkie was too close to the water. Where was the sniping, scowling, mope of a boy you’d met a couple weeks ago?
As the sun crept higher in the sky, morning gave way to afternoon and you, Nancy and Robin found a spot to lay out next to the lake. The others were all clambering into Hop’s old boat and snippets of their bickering fell into your ears.
“Move over, Mike, Max is sitting next to me.”
“Just because she’s your girlfriend doesn’t mean you have to be on her.”
“I’m not on her.”
“Can we please go already?”
“Children. It’s too early for this shit,” Steve chided. A smirk tugged up at your lips when you opened your eyes, but it fell as you caught the boy pulling the soft white cotton of his t-shirt up and over his head and you swore you felt your heart drop out of your chest.
The muscles along his back tensed as he leaned over and gave the boat a shove off the sandy beach and into the water. A whole galaxy worth of freckled constellations scattered across the slope of his shoulders and even if you wanted to you didn’t think you could pull your eyes away from him.
“Helloooo, anyone home?” Robin waved a hand in front of your face and when you blinked her back into focus she was giving you the biggest shit-eating grin you’d ever seen.
“What?” you sniped, hastily snatching the spliff from between her fingers.
“Oh, nothing, just watching you be a creep.”
You frowned and took a drag, “I’m not a creep. That guy is grade A douchebag.”
Robin huffed a laugh and shook her head, “He definitely doesn’t make it easy.” But then Nancy chimed in.
“Steve’s…had a hard time,” she murmured, tone soft, expression almost nostalgic.
Oh, fell from your mouth and for a minute you felt bad, a thread of guilt snaking around your heart. You had your fair share of shit and people still gave you a chance despite your sass and sharp tongue, why weren’t you doing the same?
“I mean, don’t get me wrong, he can be a dingus,” Robin laughed her bright Robin laugh and grabbed the joint from you, taking a drag, “But he’s our dingus. He’ll come around, you’ll see.”
Turning away from the girls you glanced over to find Steve and Eddie throwing rocks into the lake, laughing like a couple of idiots, and you couldn’t help wondering if maybe you were wrong about him. You wished for a minute he’d tell you. Wished he’d sit close and let you look at him. Let you see what it was you were missing.
“You three are much too dry,” Eddie’s voice stilted your thoughts and you realized both boys had stopped what they were doing to make a beeline for the cozy little spot you all had set up.
“No. No way, Munson. We just lit this. Don’t even think about it,” Robin snarked through a smoky exhale, holding her hand up in protest.
“Think about what? This? Harrington, gimme a hand.”
The look on Nancy’s face was scary enough to make anyone wilt on the spot, but you and Robin were too easy. Eddie scooped Robin up from the ground as she tried to scramble away, flailing against him, “EDDIE MUNSON, PUT ME DOWN.”
“Sure thing, sweetheart!” Eddie walked them knee deep into the lake and then promptly fell over backwards with a splash, Robin screeching as they both hit the water.
A laugh nearly escaped you, but it stalled when you saw Steve coming at you with an intense commitment and you froze. “Oh-no-I don’t–”
“Sorry, captain’s orders,” he said simply and then he was wrapping his arms around your waist, lifting you from the ground with ease and tossing you over his shoulder. As he walked away Nancy shrugged at you guiltily. Sorry, she mouthed, but the grin on her face said she wasn’t.
Steve was so warm, like he held summer and the sun and firecrackers in his chest, and as your shirt rode up you felt his calloused fingers trailing along the soft curve of your hip. His touch was electric, crackling against your skin, and your breath hitched in your throat as he rumbled a laugh against you, “Not even gonna fight me? Doesn’t seem like you.”
His voice shook you back from where ever you’d gotten lost and you squirmed in his hold, cheeks burning bright red, “You can’t be serious, are you twelve??”
“Feels like it,” he shot back casually. His bare feet met the lake and he lengthened his steps as his legs pushed against the water til it lapped at his waist.
“Shit, far enough!” curses fell from your lips and he only laughed in return.
Flipping you around the front of him he gave you a boyish grin. You opened your mouth in protest, but the words died in your throat when your eyes met. Pupils blown from the weed. All burnt caramel and honey, flecks of gold swimming in hazel, bright and glassy in the summer sun.
“Plug your nose,” and just like that the moment was shattered as he pulled you tight to his chest, pushing you both off the sandy lake bottom and under the water.
You probably should’ve said something, should’ve told someone you’d never really been good at swimming cos no one ever bothered to show you, but how lame and stupid and silly and as your head went under the blue-green of the lake you felt Steve let go and you panicked.
Reaching out, your hands slipped against his chest, frantically searching for anything to hold onto, your breath shrinking in your throat. Dread was pulling at your stomach at the thought of him swimming away, but it was like he knew and in an instant he had a hold on you, lifting you to the surface.
“Whoa, hey, are you okay?” Steve blew water from his lips, pulling you up, arms tight and warm on your bare skin.
You sucked in a breath of air, chest heaving, and for a minute you wished someone would throw you back into the lake. Blinking water from your lashes you opened your eyes expecting him to lay into you, but he didn’t.
“Seriously, are you good?” he said again. Lifting a hand to your face his fingers gently pushed messy, wet hair out of your eyes, looking for you to tell him you were okay.
“Uh–yeah. Yes. Good.”
“Good,” he echoed, eyes still searching yours at the uncertainty in your voice.
“I–” the words stuck in your throat, but you heard Robin in the back of your mind, He’ll come around, you’ll see. “–I can’t swim,” you muttered, cheeks burning.
“Oh? Oh,” Steve looked at you in a way he hadn’t done before. You’d loosed honesty on him and he felt it. Water dripped off his nose and he pressed his hand gently on the small of your back. “Well…that’s okay. I–I won’t tell anyone,” and when he looked at you, you knew he meant it.
“Could you at least go out a little further if you’re gonna do that?” Eddie’s voice teased from the shore, barely room for lake water between the two of you and you both realized what it looked like.
“Shut up, Munson! There was a crayfish!” Steve hollered over your shoulder.
“Yeah, oookay.”
Robin slapped a hand against Eddie’s chest and shoved him toward the cooler for another beer, trying to give you a minute.
“Here,” Steve steadied his feet under him, arms still holding you tight as he swam you back to a place where you could touch. When his hands fell away you missed it, Steve and warm and summer, and the cold lake water trailed goosebumps across your skin. “Better, princess?”
There it was.
“You know I hate that,” and you shoved him, but it was soft and you didn’t really mean it and he knew it.
When he looked down at you he gave you a tiny, teasing grin, but it melted the longer he looked. And then he said something that surprised you. “Listen, I-I can be asshole, I’m sorry,” he didn’t shy away, keeping his eyes on yours, and returned your moment of trust.
“So don’t be,” and you were serious, but he laughed and the sound made your heart flutter against your ribcage.
“Workin’ on it,” he rubbed the back of his neck and you swore you saw nerves flicker in his eyes, but then he dropped his gaze and cleared his throat. “Eds, beer me! C’mon, lunch,” and he reached a hand out to flick your fingers before jogging back up to the others.
The rest of the day spun by in a blur of laughter and sunscreen and smoke as the sky blew out into pale pinks and lilacs and bachelor button blue. Everyone was full of the sandwiches Nancy threw together, no one caught any fish, and all you could do was think about what Steve had said.
I’m sorry.
He was softer to you after that, his teasing held less heat, and you were both smiling. A lot. Everyone noticed, but no one said anything and you were thankful for it. You wished you could all stay there in that moment forever, held in the hazy sunbeams that glittered off the turquoise of the lake, but the light was fleeting and soon it was time to leave.
Eddie threw his cooler in the back of the van and lazily passed the spliff he’d been smoking to Jonathan, “Robs, we gotta go soon. Stevie boy has to get back.”
“What? Steve. Don’t tell me you’re hanging out with Tommy?” Robin leaned up on her elbows and fixed the boy with a look he couldn’t see.
“And what if I am?” Steve’s voice was flat as he stretched out on his back with a ball cap over his face, fingers laced behind his head.
“Steve,” Nancy spoke up then, tone short. Eddie and Jonathan both suddenly found the joint they were sharing very interesting.
“What, mom,” Steve huffed a sigh and sat up, yanking his hat over damp hair, “It’s fine, it’s not like I’m gonna steal another car.”
Your stomach dropped. Stealing a car? Tommy? He had to have been one of the other boys that night at Hop’s place. Why was Steve still hanging out with him?
“Hah, hah. Real funny, Harrington. Seriously, Steve. Tommy’s not–”
“I’m kinda done talking about it, Robs, so–” Steve shoved himself off the ground, grabbing his shirt off the rocks, “–Munson, let’s go.”
“Yep, leaving,” Eddie didn’t want to get caught in the middle of it and wasted no time hopping into the driver’s seat, waving at Robin to hurry the hell up, “See you kids at the fair, right? Friday?”
“Wouldn’t miss it,” Jonathan agreed as he and Nancy tried to herd the kids into the station wagon.
“Hawkins’ Fourth of July is legendary,” Lucas chimed in.
Max rolled her eyes and pushed him into the car, “You’re sitting in the middle this time.”
“You too. Get in, Harrington,” Robin took a page from Max’s book, shoving Steve into the van and pulling the slider closed behind them.
“Alright, everyone say a prayer for Stevie!”
“Shut up, Munson.”
“No, no he needs it!”
“I don’t, I don’t need it,” Steve had shoved himself between the front seats to flip Eddie off, but as he hit the gas Steve fell back into the bench and they were off down the road.
“So, you can sit in the front this time. You know, if you wanna talk to Nance or whatever,” Jonathan said, thumbing over his shoulder.
Oh, fell out. If you wanted to talk to Nance? He gave you a small knowing smile and it made your cheeks flush pink as he walked back to pile in next to Dustin.
The radio crackled as you rolled down the road back home, all the windows open, summer air blowing your lake damp hair past your face. You could still feel Steve’s hold around your waist, that look he’d given you, I’m sorry.
“Listen, I know Steve can be hard,” Nance broke the silence, everyone else fast asleep. “We dated in high school and he just…” she drifted off, considering her words, “…he’s sweet, it’s just not easy for him at home.” She glanced over at you, giving you a half smile. She cared. It was more than obvious.
“I think it’s like that for a lot of people,” you said quietly, your own relationship with your parents less than easy.
“Well, just give him a chance. You know? He’s got a big heart, he just needs someone who isn’t going to break it.”
He just needs someone who isn’t gonna break it.
Would you break it? Wait, did you want it?
You rode in silence for the rest of the ride home, Journey’s After the Fall playing on the radio, your heart feeling a little less guarded, warmer, and wrapped in honey and burnt caramel.
Should've told you then I knew, should've told you right from the start, hey. But the words didn't come out right, so I'll tell you straight from my heart.
