More Flight of Icarus thoughts, specifically about Paige Warner.

TLDR. She deserves better than what the fandom gave her.

God she was treated so bad by the fandom.

This woman has her Grandma die, she comes home to clean a hoarder home which is really messed up and can take a huge toll on your mental health. She found dead cats in the home! She has a dream job that barely acknowledges her and even says that guys try and date her just to try and get signed.

She shows up to the Hideout, just to hear some music to get her mind off of everything going on and runs into a cute boy who's music she likes. She's attracted to him and he feels far more real than any of the plastic people in LA. They flirt a little and she goes back to the Hideout to see him again.

The cute boy shows up again, saying he wants to see her. She is so excited until he just wants what every other guy wants; to be signed. But shit, his music is good and maybe they can help each other out.

Paige sets up the studio, pays out of pocket for a demo ($300 in 1984, is $840 in 2024 money) and works her ass off to try and help. It's a long shot, her boss is picky and hates most things. But Paige sees in Eddie what we ALL see. She believes in him.

By some stroke of luck, her boss loves the demo. This is HUGE. She used her own time and funds and stuck her neck out for Eddie and sacrificed everything to make this happen.

She tells him, he finally makes a move and kisses her. Things are great for a few weeks. She's gonna get a promotion, he's gonna get signed and they're gonna live together in L.A. She likes him. He likes her. Her family likes him.

He drops her off at the airport. In a few days things are gonna work out.

A few days pass. She gets a call from Eddie thinking that he missed her or that he wanted to just hear from her.

No. Once again, Eddie bursts her bubble and he's in jail. It's early, she's not awake yet. She asks what did he do because what the fuck? The audition is in a few days. This is a BIG DEAL. Like, she could probably get super fucked over because real agents from a huge record lable are about to get blown off because this guy she put everything into decided to do something stupid right now and land himself in jail. Could her job really trust her after this??

Anyone would be pissed.

Remember, she has no context of what we know about Eddie. She only knows what little he gave her, and he hid a LOT about who he was to try and be who he thought he should be

She STILL bails him out of jail.

And yeah, I am jealous that Paige had Eddie even for a while. But that doesn't negate that she was treated badly by the fandom for the crime of being a girl who was interested in Eddie. Any of us would have done the exact same thing to do something for Eddie.

You're really into this one particular superhero specifically, you've collected tons of comics issues about him, you know all the lore. Sometimes you even bring an issue or two to work with you, to read at your lunch break, and daydream about how cool it would be to be a superhero like your favourite blorbo. And then, one day, at work, as you're going around and doing your job, you have an accident and some stuff explodes. You actually get kind of caught in the blast! But fortunately you're not hurt, so you just clean up the mess and go about your day, no big deal. And then weird stuff starts happening and you gradually put together that the accident at work gave you superpowers. Not only that but the exact same superpowers as your blorbo. You immediately decide that the only correct thing to do with this development is, in fact, to promptly become a superhero. And then you name your superhero alter-ego after your blorbo

well i guess today is the day

firstly Interstellar, dressed in leather, drinking bitter boy is so obviously referring to Alex and there is no denying it (thank you to @uhbasicallyjustmilex for bringing this to my attention!) which is why I think, despite the next part being a bit of a stretch, that there is a possibility!

but my theory is that You're my top 100 shows is possibly an inside joke between Miles and Alex (I physically cannot provide context or proof but I just have a feeling about it) especially since the title is literally: Killing the joke.

Since we all know that something went down during 2018 when they were both distant and both released albums with very much "break up" undertones (Coup De Grace + Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino) listening to the two albums side by side has me feeling like they are communicating with each other through some lyrics

For example: (i'm aware that i'm reaching very far with this one)

Wrong Side of Life - Oh how I feel, I feel you don't love me no more

The Ultracheese - But I haven't stopped loving you once

With Killing the Joke, the chorus is Miles reflecting on what they used to have and unable to stop himself from desperately trying to get it back but ultimately feeling defeated as he follows the line with Why do I always have to go killing the joke.

Despite this absolutely ripping my heart to pieces, I do think that in the end things managed to get patched up between them as among the heart-wrenching lyrics, glimpses of longing for one another are definitely present throughout many songs and as the last lines on each ending tracks are very hopeful and indicates that they still have undeniable feelings for each other.

this whole theory is probably a sign that i need to go outside and stop spending all my time analysing milex coded lyrics but i would like to hear if anyone understands where i'm coming from/has anything to add!
