Once upon a Time... or is it Once a Year?
Once upon a Time… or is it Once a Year?
For the parents and recipients of First Holy Communion, I’m certain it feels like a “Once upon a Time” experience donned in white suits and dresses carrying heirloom rosary beads to their photo shoot prior to Church. For me, as the owner of The Camera’s Eye, it’s a smiled upon once-a-year tradition. Sister Anne Quigley of the Church of Epiphany contacts me faithfully, all pun intended, to…

[EN] That was about 4 years ago. Alexander was going to communion. I had to check the date because in my head it was no more than 2 years ago. But indeed, he's now a big boy, as tall as me. And back then, still such a little one.

what’s your favorite coptic tradition/custom?
first thing that comes to mind is the coptic kiss. i cant find footage of it online and dont really know where to look so i'll do my best to describe it: basically you hold hands with another person such that one of your hands is between both of theirs and one of theirs is between both of yours (think of this emoji 🙏) and then you both draw your hands back (keeping them closed, so you caress each others' hands as you draw back), and then press your hands to your lips and kiss them where they had been touching the other person's. it always seemed so sweet to me.
second of all our communion bread is SOMETHING ELSE. it's not there little wafers like i hear people have in the west? we have those big round fluffy discs of bread that taste oh so heavenly. photo:
Tumblr media
hand for scale. it has coptic writing pressed to the dough (you can faintly see it in the photo) but it usually becomes illegible by the time it bakes lol. they give us one each during communion, and if you want more you can buy on your way out! it's sooo yummy.
if i think of more i'll come back to this post!

Finally completed my collection of Vampire Chronicles A. Knopf hardbacks! I’m not even halfway through reading them but I knew after buying TVL that I wanted the whole set. Even if they’re not all true first editions, I think they’re by far the most beautiful versions of these books and they’re a joy to read. I’ve also included a photo of the gorgeous crochet Lestat book jacket my partner made me which will protect these books as I continue to read them!
The breakdown:
- Interview with the Vampire 1976, 40th Anniversary Edition, 36th printing.
- The Vampire Lestat 1985, 39th printing.
- Queen of the Damned 1988, First Edition.
- Tale of the Body Thief 1992, First Edition.
- Memnoch the Devil 1995, 9th printing.
- Pandora 1998, third printing.

tw: grief, mild self harm.
ao'nung reacts to his first day home without spider
~~~
There were a lot of firsts ao’nung had feared going through without spider; the first family meal without him, the first family sleep pile without him, the first communion with the ancestors without him, the first return of the tulkun without him. He knew those would hurt, but he could prepare for those, even if only a little.
He didn’t expect walking into the family pod to be one of those things. He didn’t expect something so seemingly trivial to rip his out his heart and spit it out in front of him. He didn’t predict himself breaking down into inconsolable tears right where he stood.
Everything was just how it had been the day they left for battle. Spider always tieded up his bedroll after breakfast, but everything happened so quickly that he never went back. Spiders roll was still next to his own, in between him and tsireya; most kids grew out of sleeping together by their age, but spider needed so much attention, deserved it, and the siblings were not shy about giving him what he craved. There was a kelp blanket still strewn out on the floor, he had weaved it himself, it was big enough for the three of them, and it was soft with wear.
He remembered that night. Spider had slept against his chest, they stayed up late into the night talking, so late that even tsireya, the gossiper, was telling them to shut up. Spider had been excited to train the next morning; dad was going to teach them a new spear technique, mom was going to rebraid his hair over lunch, and then diplomacy lessons from both parents over dinner. Spider had just found his place within the clan, his heart had settled, and he no longer felt like he was out of place; he no longer felt like he didn’t belong within his family’s lives. The next day was supposed to be fun, they were supposed to be together, spider was supposed to be happy, not end up dead by the next eclipse.
They went to sleep with smiles on their faces, ao’nung holding his baby brother close, one hand extending past him to hold onto his sister's arm. He found comfort in being together more than he ever had before, and he wished he knew that would be the last time the 3 of them would be together; if he had, he would have talked to spider all night, he would have held his siblings closer, he would have done something. But he didn’t know, so he kicked his sister’s leg harder than he should have when she told him to be quiet. He called spider a kiss-ass for liking diplomacy lessons, and he didn’t kiss his sibling's forehead’s like he did most nights. Things so little in the moment were now ripping through his mind like a hot blade.
He had sunk to the floor at the doorway, barely made it a few steps in before his grief got the best of him, but now he was pulling himself along the woven floor to gather the blanket up in his arms. This was one of the first things spider made when he joined the family, it was something he made for his family, and it was one of the last things he touched before their lives were irrevocably ruined. It remained untainted by war and smoke and blood, it was the one thing he could depend on.
Then he looked past the bedrolls, finding spider’s pack pushed up against the wall like always. He had left it in the hurry. In it, he found some pieces of unfinished jewelry (spider never liked having still hands, so he carried unfinished projects with him), a simple wooden blade (it was from his dad, he never explained its importance, but he never went without it for long), shells from the tidal pools (he had collected them with mother and tsireya), flat stones (for tossing with ao’nung and his friends), dog tags (he said they were special to sky people warriors, he had both of his mama’s and his dad’s), and one other thing that broke ao’nung’s heart. He found a waterproof case full of photos. Within them, there were photos of him and his brother, of their whole family, past and present, blood or not. But the photo with the most wear, despite it having to be only a few months old, was a photo of spider and ao’nung. He’s pretty sure kiri and tsireya had taken it; it was the boys laid out on the beach, clearly having just finished training with each other, their spears thrown in the sand behind them, and their face’s all sweaty. They were smiling, ao’nung on his back, spider draped on top of him. Tsmukan. It was the first time spider called him brother. He’d said it with the biggest smile on his face; he was proud to be his brother, had his sister’s record the moment, burned into a piece of paper so he could hold it, all the time by the looks of it.
What he once found endearing, spider's infatuation with family, keepsakes, things of that nature, were now slowly killing his already wounded heart. He knew about all that stuff, had seen it all before. For Eywa’s sake, half of the photos with him in were ‘selfies’ or whatever spider called it. He knew about all of it, yet it hurt now, it hurt because it was all he had left of him.
He eventually pulled himself up, clutching the pack to his chest, to sit against the wall, blanket at his side. All he could do was cry; he couldn’t move on, spider had planted so deeply within his chest, and now he felt empty and raw. It had only been a few months, but they had become inseparable, life seemed unimaginable without him. Spider was supposed to be eyktanay, leading underneath him, they were supposed to be together, to see the end of the war, lead their people back to prosper together.
it wasn't fair. it wasn't fair. it wasn't fair. IT WASN'T FAIR.
why? why did he have to be stripped of his brother, why did spider have to have his life cut short, why did everything have to be ruined, by him and his fucking people. first he makes spiders life hell, cold and alone, then he leaves him with those monster's for months, leaves him to get sick and almost die. now this, letting spider take a bullet for his ass, the great Toruk Makto, dreamwalker turned olo'eyktan? it was such bullshit, it was fucking bullshit and it. wasn't. fucking. fair.
fuck Jake.
he felt a sort of frenzy fill him, sending him flying across the pod to punch the nearest support beam, nearly busting his knuckles when  he did so. the pain only lasted a second before it started to dull the pain in his chest, in his eyes as salty tears soaked into his skin, his head as it began to pound with his screams. so he kept punching, till blood ran down his arm and his hand felt numb.
and then be looked at the post at hand, and Eywa he was lucky it was made of good wood, cause if it hadn't, ao'nung might have lost it.
spiders name was carved there, amongst his and his sisters.
it's where they marked their heights. spider had been so eager to join in, even though he didn't have much height left to fill. he said Jake marked his other kids height back in their old hut, but never his. ao'nung had dad mark his height, would have done it himself with great pride, but he knew spider needed their dad to do it.
suddenly the rage left, that cold emptiness returned, he traced his fingers over spiders name over and over, the carved line in the wood now soaked in his blood. he was so small.
he fell asleep their, tracing the lines, ignoring the throbbing pain in his hand. when he woke he felt the blanket around his shoulders and felt his hands had been wrapped. he was in spiders pallet, and his mother was sitting next to him, singing spiders songchord; all the happy memories looped over and over again. he didn't open his eyes, he just wanted to stay in this little bubble of time where he could just barely convince himself his brother was a sleep next to him, their mother singing to them after a long day of training. eventually she stopped, she began talking to someone, his father maybe.
she was talking about fish and spirits. "spider is with him, the glowfish are a sign Tonowari, they have been circling him all night."
oh.
he shifted lazily, wanting to keep up the act of sleep, but turned to face the cracks between the webbing, finding he was in fact being circled by a school of glowfish.
part of him eased, part of him ached; spider was with him, but not with him.
before he could even attempt to stifle his tears, his mama was hold him, taking him up into her arms, hushing him gently. his dad joined her, hugging them both. they didn't speak, didn't need to, they just wept in silence until they grew tired again, tsireya coming back from her turn watching spider (it was kiri's turn now, if he remembered correctly), joining their huddle.
yet another thing that felt empty without spider. he was so small yet he filled the gaping hole in the pile.
they slept that night, played by the reminder that spider's body was only a few pods over, but comforted by the soft glow of the schooling fish below them. spider wasn't gone, not completely, and ine day they would be able to find peace in that, but for now, they slept in one another's arms, missing their baby with every ounce of themselves.
Earlier today, Pope Francis declared that 21 Coptic Orthodox Christians, who were beheaded by Islamic militants in Libya in 2015, would be added to the Roman Martyrology. Francis made the announcement during an audience with Pope Tawadros II, the leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. The “21 Coptic New Martyrs of Libya,” as they are called, were martyred on February 15, 2015. Less than a week later, they were declared saints in the Coptic Orthodox Church by Pope Tawadros. The Copts celebrate their feast on the anniversary of their death, February 15, and it appears that this will also be their feast day on the Roman calendar.
The world was shocked in February 2015, when a 5-minute video was uploaded to the internet by ISIS militants. The video showed the 21 kidnapped men in orange jumpsuits being beheaded on a beach near the Libyan city of Sirte. 20 of these martyrs were Egyptian Copts who had gone to Libya to do construction work. The last member of the group, Matthew Ayariga, was a fellow worker from Ghana. It is said that he told the executioners, “Their God is my God. I will go with them.” There has been some question over whether he was already Christian or whether the witness of his 20 coworkers led to his conversion, but nevertheless, his Christian witness and solidarity are inspiring. It was reported that as they died, they chanted hymns and prayed aloud.
The deaths of these men as Christian martyrs is undeniable. The extraordinary photos of Blessed Miguel Pro, a Catholic priest who was executed by the Mexican government in 1927 during the Cristero War — taken just moments before the he was shot by the firing squad — are perhaps the only other photographic images recording a Christian martyrdom as it happened. And yet the recognition of the 21 martyrs as Catholic saints is unprecedented for several reasons.
The primary reason, of course, is that the Coptic Orthodox Church is not in full communion with Rome. The Copts are Oriental Orthodox (as opposed to Eastern Orthodox), because they split from the other Christian churches in the year 451 at the Council of Chalcedon due to differences over the nature of Christ. They are also referred to as “Non-Chalcedonian Orthodox Churches.” This means that they recognize the first three ecumenical councils, whereas the Eastern Orthodox recognize seven, and the Catholic Church recognizes 21 ecumenical councils.
After more than 15 centuries, our hope of reunion may seem remote. After all these years, the two Churches have independently developed their own traditions, theologies, forms of worship, and prayers. Yet some things have remained the same. Both Churches have maintained apostolic succession and the sacraments: Pope Francis is the successor of St. Peter and Pope Tawadros is the successor of St. Mark. In recent decades, the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Coptic Orthodox Church has become closer. For example, in 2017, Popes Francis and Tawadros made a joint statement indicating mutual acceptance of the validity of baptism in both Churches.
Pope Francis has praised the Martyrs of Libya many times, and today he recalled our shared baptism, as well as the blood of martyrs that enriches the Church. He said, “These martyrs were baptized not only in the water and Spirit, but also in blood, a blood that is the seed of unity for all of Christ’s followers.” In the past, the pope has discussed how we must realize that we, the baptized, have much more in common than what divides us. This shared recognition of sainthood between the two Churches is a significant step towards Christian unity.
This sets a new precedent. In 1964, when the Ugandan Martyrs were canonized by Pope Paul VI, St. Charles Lwanga and the other 21 Catholics among his companions were declared saints. The 23 Anglicans who were martyred alongside them were mentioned briefly in the pope’s homily, when he said, “And we do not wish to forget, the others who, belonging to the Anglican confession, met death for the name of Christ.”
Another reason why today’s announcement is unique was that Pope Francis did this by an official act. The Roman Martyrology is the official list of saints officially recognized by the Latin Church. Many Eastern Catholic Churches have their own processes for canonizing saints according to their traditions. Historically, when groups of Eastern Catholics have come into full communion with Rome, they will bring along their saints and prayers and traditions. Many of these saints aren’t officially canonized by Rome, and they are usually only venerated in their own tradition. By inscribing the names of these martyrs in the Roman Martyrology, Pope Francis has made it clear that these martyrs are to be venerated by Roman Catholics as saints.
Finally, in declaring them saints today, Pope Francis sidestepped the typical canonization process. They are saints, without having passed through the usual stages of Servant of God, Venerable, and Blessed. This “skipping” of steps is commonly referred to as “equipollent canonization.” Essentially, when a pope declares someone a saint by an official act, that person is recognized as a saint in the Church. This is not the first time Francis has moved a case along in this way. For example, when he canonized Popes John XXIII and John Paul II in 2014, he waived the requirement of a second miracle for John XXIII so that the two popes would be canonized on the same day. In 2013, he elevated the Jesuit Peter Faber, whose status had lingered at “Blessed” since 1872.
Perhaps the most interesting case is that of St. Gregory of Narek, an Armenian monk venerated as a saint in the Armenian Catholic Church and the Armenian Apostolic Church. Unexpectedly, Pope Francis named him the 36th Doctor of the Church in 2015. Living from in the mid-10th century through the early 11th, St. Gregory lived at a time when the Armenian Church was not in communion with Rome. After several failed attempts at reunion, the Armenian Catholic Church was officially recognized as an Eastern Catholic Church in 1742. Interestingly, the Armenian Catholic eparchy of Buenos Aires (established in 1989 by Pope John Paul II) is called the Eparchy of Saint Gregory of Narek. Perhaps this is how Pope Francis became familiar with the saint.
We Christians are blessed with a wide variety of saints from all sorts of backgrounds. They help make up the beautiful tapestry of the people of God — praying for us, interceding for us, and inspiring us. This is something worth celebrating.
21 Coptic New Martyrs of Libya, Pray for Us!
Get to Know Me Tag
Tagged by the feisty @lurkingshan, thanks Shan!
Do you make your bed?
Kinda. After my divorce, I bought lovely new bedding and happily made my bed every morning for like a year. Then I got lazy. I sorta half-ass it, where I fluff my pillows and pull up sheets and straighten the blankets and bed spread, but it's not photo-worthy or anything.
What’s your favorite number?
3. I like triads and trinities. In fact, I named my first dog Trinity. And I had three children!
What is your job?
I’m an author. I have 4 non-fiction books published under my given name and 15 fiction books published under a pseudonym. Many of my books were best sellers. Despite this fact, it is not enough to pay the bills. So I supplement my income with speaking engagements, teaching classes, and running a handful of websites, one of which is a wholesale distribution platform for artisanal imported foods. Basically, I'm self-employed and keep myself busy doing anything that interests me.
If you could go back to school, would you?
No. While I love learning and don't mind taking the occasional class to be introduced to a cool skill (like making stained glass!), I absolutely refuse to do any more higher education than I already have. I was sorta super nerdy at school because of an eidetic memory, so I collected degrees in Biblical Studies, Philosophy, Greek, Linguistics, and Russian Literature before I finally realized I didn't want to be a perpetual student.
Can you parallel park?
Nope. I learned how to do it to get my Driver's License over 30 years ago and have literally never had to use the skill since.
A job you had that would surprise people?
Hmmm. My job-jobs were all pre-children so people are surprised when they find out I ever had any since my last one was decades ago. But I didn't just have a few, I had a LOT of jobs because I finished school early and had to pay for my entire university education myself because of poor parents, and I think that's the most surprising thing. I was a waitress (14-16), a shop clerk (16-18), an acquisitions librarian's assistant (18-19), a bank teller (20), a digital librarian for a major software development company (20-21), a language tutor (18-21), an adjunct professor (22-24), a houseparent in a boy's home (24), and a cog in the county tax assessor's office (24-26). I also volunteered as a translator for Doctor's Without Borders and as a suicide prevention counselor for LGBTQ youth. At 26, I had my first child and became self-employed.
Do you think aliens are real?
Possibly, but I struggle to believe humans have ever interacted with any.
Can you drive a manual car?
Yes!
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Cop shows. I agree ACAB, but I love love LOVE the testosterone-fueled fantasy world of shows like Hawaii Five 0.
Tattoos?
None. I didn't want any at first because all the tattoos I'd seen on old people didn't age well thanks to saggy skin, wrinkles, etc. Now I kinda wish I'd had at least one.
Favorite color?
Dark azure.
Favorite type of music?
I LOVE IT ALL. If you live long enough, you discover awesome music in every genre. Like, I thought I hated heavy metal, but then I discovered the album Pale Communion by Opeth a decade ago and loved literally every single song!
Do you like puzzles?
Yes, but I don't make the time to do them.
Any phobias?
Heights. Absolutely terrifying.
Favorite childhood sport?
Cross country! I ran on my varsity team in HS and continued it through college.
Do you talk to yourself?
No. I am so quiet. On the weeks I don't have custody of my kids, I have sometimes had weeks where I work exclusively from home and don't interact with another human person beyond text messages and emails. When I finally speak out loud for the first time in days, the sound of my voice is jarring and unfamiliar.
What movies do you adore?
About Time. The Royal Tenenbaums. Shawshank Redemption.
Coffee or tea?
Coffee! I used to be more of a snob about it, but I recently fell in love with Korean instant coffees and THEY ARE SO GOOD. HOLY SHIZNITS.
First thing you wanted to be growing up?
A teacher in a foreign country.
I haven't been keeping track of who tagged who, so I'd like to tag @absolutebl @juneviews @twig-tea @sorry-bonebag @stefanyd @waitmyturtles @disaster-j @cooloddball @spicyvampire and @norahastuff If you'd like to play and I didn't tag you, please do!! Be sure to tag me so I can read your post.
it's largely common knowledge that the themes in House (1977) were in part influenced by Nobuhiko Obayashi's experience losing all of his childhood friends in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but something in particular that stands out to me wrt this is how the isolation fostered by the house itself postwar is what largely compels Auntie to attack Gorgeous and her friends. the transition from war to peaceful postwar Japan is illustrated before we see any actual surreality, the horror and loss largely regarded as this far-away cinematic before-time by the girls. their carefree amusement carries over to when they visit Auntie's estate; this disconnected environment that the film frames as a fantasy-like artifact of this bygone era. the generational disconnect is made palpable. Auntie's fiance died in the war and the house meant for the two of them became a monument to her failure to reconcile with this reality (theres a very good critique here of marriage as an institution that likely wasnt intended lol). the beauty of the house at first glance occupies the same realm as Gorgeous' photos and memories of her deceased mother. cold dead inertia draped in the illusion of life.
it's for this reason that Gorgeous is likely drawn to visit her in the first place. her father taking on a new wife is a betrayal of the memory of her late mother, and in trying to preserve the sameness of her family in the face of this change, she seeks communion with her mother through her aunt. she wants to go back, but there is nothing to go back to. the house as a reflection of Auntie's trauma turns the inability to press forward into the face of death itself. the mirror scene kind of plays with this brilliantly through it's distortion of her reflection: Gorgeous is presented with two images: one where she is young and beautiful forever as a bloodthirsty undead demon within the house, and one where she grows old and dies, faceless and forgotten (presumably like Auntie's fiancee). both are death but one will feel like survival. Auntie and Gorgeous become less distinguishable as the film goes on, and during my initial viewing i assumed that Gorgeous was possessed for the latter part of the film. when i think about it longer though, it makes more sense that ok yeah there is some possession here, but Gorgeous is also embracing the same spiritual fixation that consumed her aunt, and that what becomes of her friends is what she wanted in her heart.
is that restaurant photo the only reason people started this rumour about Justin Kirk being Marisu? because it's kind of weird to me.. was there anything else? First of all in that restaurant photo that person does not look like Justin to me at all... and also why would he even be there? we are still on "Interview with the vampire" storyline in season 2 so 99% Marius would not be in the show or filming yet at all... and yes I know they can sprinkle in stuff from other books but i don't think they would bring in character like Marius and introduce him in "IWTV" season for one or two shots only... and he would be already so close with the cast he's going out with them?
All of this is such reaching lol and it makes no sense...
Mhhh. I have to disagree.
It does make sense, and I believe that it is far from reaching given the leaked posters etc. 🤷🏽‍♀️
And yes, there was more. So let's recap, shall we? :))
I think there was this post a while back, that kicked the rumor off. Somewhere there was more, wrt him mentioning that if the show gets it's seasons he would come back in season 4 and 5, I talked about it here, but seem to have not tagged it (sorry). There were various posters from Prague mentioning him (or his name):
Tumblr media
And then there was this blurry photo I reblogged earlier, and to me that does look like him in makeup.
*shrugs*
We will see.
He definitely has the range and the props to do Marius justice, and I do think he would be a fantastic one - he does carry that arrogant patrician air if he wants to, totally apart from his acting skills, which are immense.
Now, wrt to your question as to why he would be there....
Marius has been mentioned already in season ONE. In book canon Armand being able to stand the sun but Louis cannot places us in a very specific time frame. Armand is on the phone to someone (not using his mind gift), one of Marius' paintings hangs in the apartment and the "prime minister", a title Marius has in the later books, has been mentioned. We know they are taking from Prince Lestat and Blood Communion at the very least.
Marius is, as his maker, a big part of Armand's backstory, and we know that some of the flashbacks in season two will be to the 1790s... so they have to be from Armand's POV.
Marius also had a big part in the backstory Lestat has already mentioned, with Those Who Must Be Kept. Depending on what that groan in Dubai basement is... he might be very close, actually.
The show does not follow the books, at least not too closely, apart from reaching the emotional story points and using the beautiful prose and the emotional... carnage. They are taking from other books already, Rolin Jones has held 6? 7? books up to the camera to indicate what they're using.
Tumblr media
The show being called "Interview with the vampire" is imho a concession to the "Vampire Chronicles" being too close to "Vampire Diaries"... and of course honoring the format, but it does not mean they are restricting themselves to the content of the first book, in fact they have already said that they used things from The Vampire Lestat and The Vampire Armand for the second season, because the content needed to be expanded.
All that has been mentioned in interviews again and again, and so it is very far from reaching imho, to expect Marius to show up.
And, I mean... I go out with my clients at work, too? Especially if you know that you will work with them again that's something that's actually a good idea. I've done that very often myself.
(Also… Assad and Sam did that too? 😅)
