The Treasure Pier Trio’s Favorite Songs

Rosie Gold - “Rosie” by Tom Waits

Rosie may be a woman of knowledge first and foremost, but she isn’t a woman without romance or sentiment. In fact, many of her favorite songs consist of classic love songs from the early and mid 20th century.

"Rosie" by Tom Waits is different from the others in that it was from the 1970's - much further ahead than what she normally aims for, yet it still managed to capture her heart in ways no other song has. The swaying guitar, delicate piano, and crooning vocals all play a part in this grand recipe for her perfect song. The cherry on top? The title literally has her name on it.

One of her greatest fantasies is for some wonderful man to be thoughtful enough to dedicate this song to her - perhaps even sing it as well. The only thing is if said man comes into her life and he does decide to sing it, he needs to make sure to remember that it's Tom Waits’s “Rosie” she likes and not Jackson Browne’s “Rosie”. She will surely give him the stinkeye if he messes that up.

Despite his deadpan sarcasm and tendency for frustration, Finn is the most chill and level-headed of the trio. When Bill or even Rosie start losing their heads, he is the one to bring them back to reality again.

When it comes to music, he prefers a slower tempo and a lot of bass, such as with the song featured here, “Lenny”. After a long exhausting day, there's nothing like putting this iconic guitar instrumental to help melt away any and all frustration.

He has often said that if he had proper fingers, he’d learn to play bass so he can master the backing track for this super chill tune he loves so much.

Much like how Finn is mistaken for being the hot-headed emotional one, Bill is mistaken for being the chill, relaxed one. In reality, Bill’s emotional landscape could not be any more antithetical. As a creature who likely suffers from some form of anxiety, every day is a test of raw nerve for Bill. It can sometimes get to where he can barely focus or even talk properly some days.

But with strong negative emotions, there are often strong positive emotions. And for him, no song perfectly describes how he feels in those times of long awaited euphoria quite like "Crash Into Me" by the Dave Matthews Band.

It starts out calmly enough, with uplifting guitar chords accompanied by minor brass and fiddle. Although the beginning is the most relaxed part, there is clearly some restraint, as if he's fighting to hold it all in, and slowly losing. Heavy percussion is present throughout, a fitting parallel for his heart pounding hard with excitement.

Fast forward a couple of verses, and all that build-up crescendos into a grand explosion of exhilaration in the form of soaring vocals, soulful saxophone, fleeting fiddle, and rib-rattling drums. Sweet release at last.

There's no doubt in the minds of those that know him that Bill feels deeply - sometimes too deeply for his own good. But the way he feels and expresses happiness, joy, and proves that it is by no means a bad thing. It's a feature - not a defect.
