People whose language is Sign have had to fight for acceptance from within the confines of a language that their opponents do not understand; they could not explain what they wanted until they got it. This has created an intense anger that subtends Deaf politics. The Deaf psychologist Neil Glickman has spoken of four stages of Deaf identity. People start out pretending to be hearing, with the discomfort of the only Jew in the country club or the only black family in the suburb. They progress to marginality, feeling they are not a part of either deaf or hearing life. Then they immerse themselves in Deaf culture, fall in love with it, and disparage hearing culture. Finally, they achieve a balanced view that there are strengths in both the deaf and the hearing experience.
Far From the Tree, Andrew Solomon. (2012)
The parallels here to other forms of identity adopted separately from parents, as this book focuses on generally, are incredibly vivid.
I have often idly thought that the intense sex repulsion you sometimes see in people who have newly found asexual communities after years or decades without the concept is part of a similar trajectory, for example. I also often see queer people more generally following this trajectory, and autistic people as well. This is a process for a lot of folks who find community only after a period of isolation among only people who don't share their own experiences.
It's something that should be, I think, gently handled with care and compassion by the communities receiving the person on a new journey to balance: let the person express their feelings and pain, like draining an abscess that has been full of pus for a long time, but make sure that the abscess is opened to the air and stays open so no new infections can fester while it heals. That is: gently keep the mind open if it tries to close around this new dichotomy of value, but don't be too startled or panicked about ugliness welling forth when the abscess is first breached. It will, with supportive care, drain and heal from the heart outwards as the angry irritation fades.

Do you know fics where Draco's charactersation is similar to Far from the Free? I dont mean similarities with the fics itself but Draco...I cant really explain it but he is "my" Draco; that perfect combination of still having an edge of rudness/snark/arrogance but also being devoted to Harry and providing for his family being a sexy swords ma- I mean Head Auror, just .../HIM/
Ahh anon, I feel you! I’d love to find a fic like FFTT, it’s on my top 3 and I adore it so much. Imo part of what makes it so special is this gorgeous unique Draco, his character growth and devotion to Harry are so very moving. I wish I could come up with similar fics for you but if it exists, I haven’t come across it yet 🥲
Imo Lettered writes a very compelling devoted Draco, two good examples are The Boy Who Only Lived Twice and By the Grace. I did a list with my favorite Dracos and would highlight Heal Thyself and What We Pretend We Can’t See, but personally I don’t think you can go wrong with anything written by astolat and blamebrampton. Oh, I also did a rec list for devoted Draco a couple days ago, in case you wanna check it out? I’d love to hear from my followers if they have any other recs!

Bound: Far from the Tree by aideomai

Oh man, what can I say about this fic? I love everything about it. I needed to have a bound copy of it. Did I take the tree theme a bit far? Maybe. Do I have any regrets? Only that I used a light color cloth for the cover. It ended up looking a little grubby. Oh, and metallic HTV can die a million deaths.
Otherwise, I'm thrilled with it. The endpapers? The ribbon? The chapter heading trees? So much thanks goes to the Renegade Bindery discord server.
Details: Fic: Far from the Tree by aideomai Fonts: Miller Display (body); Beloved Ornaments (section dividers); Serenity (everything else) Inside graphics came from pixabay, specifically this creator. Outside tree came from the Silhouette Design store. Endpapers came from the Craft Consortium Ink Drops - Ocean pad.

Far From the Tree
The arrival of Harry Potter’s children—snapped back in time, the children themselves guessed, twenty or so years—was the most interesting thing to happen at Hogwarts for years.
112,572 words / 315 pages
Fic by Aideomai
Back cover art by @bluebutter-art
Cover design by me
I’m so excited to share my finished bound copy of Far From the Tree by Aideomai! This will likely be the only copy since I have not been able to contact the author.
I really went back and forth with the overall design of this book, but in the end I let myself lean into the high fantasy vibes. This story is actually pretty fluffy, BUT there are swords and magic fights and spooky woods and so that’s the direction I took it!  The case is covered in midnight blue cloth and the design is finished in silver metal foiling. I foiled endpapers with copper foil using a design of trees, swords, and wands. Finally, I carried the front cover design throughout in the chapter headers.
The front of the dust jacket was designed by myself and the art on the back is from the amazing @bluebutter-art who was kind enough to allow me to use it!

chapter 2 is out!
fic synopsis:
"Stiles blanched. Next to him, he could hear Scott pull in a minuscule breath. Deaton was eyeing him carefully, and Stiles couldn't help but feel like the man knew exactly what was wrong. Somewhere in the depths of his mind, Stiles knew that to be true, and that the veterinarian was purposefully this cryptic just to test him. Sadist.
All Stiles could focus on, though, was that his mother was somehow involved, and that felt like a slap to the face. Nothing was making sense."
OR
After defeating the Nogitsune, Stiles is still having nightmares, and they're only getting worse. This, time he's worried it really could be the same dementia that claimed his mother. After all, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, does it? It's just not the tree he thinks it is.

Far from the tree by Aidomei.
With this book I learned how to paint faux leather. I used ochre tones and gilded the edges gold. I added a small title label but it doesn't convince me very much.

Top five non/disney crossover ships (I’ve gotten curious, and Bear in mind you’re allowed to choose people you’d like to see together, not just ones you’ve already seen)
Okay, I can't put these from favorite to least favorite, just in a random order, because my mind is weird and I can go on or off liking them with the breeze: The Boy and the Beast + Wolf Children: Ichirohiko/Ame. Because I like to think that Hosoda Mamoru's movies are set in their own dimension/multiverse, I have a soft spot that has grown for these two boys being incredibly stupid, but with the possibility of being incredibly loving, too. Leafie: A Hen into the Wild + Far From the Tree: Greenie/Marie. The animation is very similar and I have a soft spot for interspecies romance that doesn't have to be physical, just loving. Banjo the Woodpile Cat + Rock-a-Doodle: Banjo/Edmund. From what I can calculate, the films technically take place canonically within the same time period and, had Edmund not returned to human form in his trainwreck of a movie, it would have been nice for him to find another country cat that had experienced the Big City and didn't like it. Millennium Actress + Tokyo Godfathers: Ida Kyoji/Miyuki. Both of these young people grew up with and were friends with insanely eccentric people, and it feels right that they might get along as friends and they move along into something more once either one opened up about stories of their lives. The Last Unicorn + Fire & Ice: Prince Lir/Nekron. I have no excuses except the idea of Amelthea as a transmasc entered my mind once and immediately jumped over to the sociopath sonofabitch and how well Lir could probably handle him after living with Haggard for so long. If anything this repressed brat would probably be much easier.

The world is made more interesting by having every sort of person in it. That is a social vision. We should alleviate the suffering of each individual to the outer limits of our abilities. That is a humanist vision with medical overtones. Some think that without suffering the world would be boring; some, that without their own suffering the world would be boring. Life is enriched by difficulty; love is made more acute when it requires exertion. I used to think that the nature of the challenge was extremely important. In my last book, I wrote about how at some level I loved my depression because it had tested my mettle and made me into who I am. I now think I could have had the same enrichment from having a child with Down syndrome, or having cancer. It is not suffering that is precious, but the concentric pearlescence with which we contain it. The raw grit of anguish will never be in short supply. There is enough of it in the happiest life to serve these instructive purposes and there always will be. We are more sympathetic to Holocaust survivors than to malcontent children of privilege, but we all have our darkness, and the trick is making something exalted of it.
