YA contemporary that follows two estranged Nigerian cousins at an elite UK boarding school

one is an aspiring photographer who gets her polaroids stolen and distributed around school exposing students’ secrets - and is blamed for it

the other is in with the popular girls, and tries to ignore the personal sacrifices she’s making to fit in - namely her 'friend' whose makeup is a little too close to Blackfishing

both try to investigate who is behind it so they can get their life back on track, but they’ll have to work together to solve it

At an elite boarding school in the English countryside, Nigerian cousins Iyanu and Kitan are thrown into the middle of a schoolwide conspiracy when everyone’s juicy relationship secrets are released, Burn Book style, the week before the annual Valentine’s Day Ball.

This book’s vibe is a retelling of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream mixed with Dear White People which I actually really liked! A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays (I named my cat Hermia!!) and I loved how the author wove in issues that teens deal with nowadays such as blackfishing, bullying, peer pressure, sexual identity, cultural identity, etc. I buddy read this book with @bookswithjaybraggs and it was fun to chat with her about the mystery in this book, and speculate ‘who did it?’ This book was a fun, cute YA mystery with a side of romance that imparted knowledge about how to navigate tough situations.

If my mom sees a significant amount of blood she gets lightheaded, and has fainted on some occasions. Once it happened when we were kids, I wasn't there to witness it but I heard the story from my dad. Basically my brothers, around 7 or 8 at the time, were playing outside while my mom was making their lunch, and she accidentally cut her finger. It wasn't anything serious, but it drew a fair bit of blood and she passed out. My dad saw this and rushed over, but he didn't really know what to do so he just sort of started slapping her to wake her up (not recommended, but he had no idea and panicked)

At that exact moment my brothers both came in from playing, and all they saw was our mom unconscious on the floor and our dad slapping her. So, like, without even saying a word to each other they both just INSTANTLY start whaling on him, like, full blown attack mode to defend our mom. Which obviously didn't help the situation, but she did wake up and everything was fine.

Now our dad says that he's actually really glad they attacked him over what they thought was going on, because it means he raised good boys. And I still think that's true, they're very good boys.

#i think about this story sometimes like yeah I'm proud of them for that too actually. good job baby brothers #they're not babies anymore of course they're turning 20 next year which is crazy #but they're still the type of people who'd do something if they saw something of this sort happen for sure #respectful of women and everyone else too. they're good guys #I'm glad I ended up with them living in my house against my will for like 14 years #anyway i have no idea where i was for all this but my best guess is probably a friends house given the time period #i was always at my besties house lol #i hope she's doing well too actually. haven't spoken in forever... #bestie from greek elementary school... if you're out there... let's get muffins and fanta at the bakery across the street again someday 💜☮️

had a fucking hilarious dream that tumblr replaced the "block" function with the far funnier "glock" function, which did the exact same thing except whenever anyone blocked you a random bullet hole, like a png of a bullet hole, would appear on your blog. discourse blogs were unreadable bc you'd go to the page and the sheer amount of bullet hole pngs stacked over the blogs obscured everything. I woke myself up laughing
