Can someone tell me if the Eureka fandom is dead? Cause I'm on my third rerun and I desperately need fluff. (Just finished rewatching Founders Day)
Please, someone, anybody out there, I need to rant about how perfect Jo and Zane are!

the girl who waited (episode) is pure existential horror, tempered by the tragedy of the passage of time.
jaded amy. old amy, battle-worn amy, embittered amy, weathered amy. cold hardened unrecognising eyes. thirty six years. thirty six years in a containment facility alone. solitary confinement. facing grim reality with nothing but your wits, nothing but the faintest hope of some semi-mythical men from a distant past coming to rescue you, princess in the tower a second time. not this time. you forge weapons. you fight. you force yourself to forget. and then out of the blue, that bloody, bloody distinctive shade of blue, comes his voice, cheery as ever, spouting technobabble, cracking puns, all with that sickening babytalk – wibbly-wobbly bibbety bobbity boop. promised you a dream and gave you hell, hell, hell again, your beloved's death, your beloved's death, traps, paradoxes, a daughter, a daughter who was never there, a daughter who was never yours to raise, a childhood best friend that you'd never met, a life you never got to live. he dropped out of the sky and burnt up your world over and over and over, displaying something like a true exhilaration, something like amusement while he's doing it. and now when there's nothing left, no stars to explore (they're all flaming balls of dead matter) no planets to discover (they're crawling with dread and disease and pollution and war) his carefree tone cuts through the stillness announcing – we've come to save you, little girl. it's only been a blip for us, a glitch, an oopsie, locked on a bit too late, sorry rory.
these men brought you to purgatory and left you there. and now one of them's back (wearing the other's voice on his eyes, the omnipresent voice of your cruel god) your husband from the life before, unchanged, un-aged, same as you last saw him. you haven't been touched by another living soul in thirty six years and he's grabbing your arm.
who are these men, now strangers to you both, one frozen in youth, another ancient? here, the other one: on the screen, ever unchanging, ever friendly, that knowing gaze. they both promised you a universe, then allowed it to narrow to the size of a cage. you're not plastic like your dear "husband" had been all those millenia he spent "waiting". you're not a mysterious transtemporal entity. you're alive, you're human, so much more human than these aliens standing in front of you now, and you've felt every moment, every agonising moment, every hour, every year of your indefinite sentence. isolated. alone
that glowing gadget in your hand? it's a probe. sonic probe. because in a world with no wonder left, we refer to objects by their proper names.

So I've now watched all of Eureka and a good portion of Warehouse 13 and Sanctuary. Sanctuary and WH13 are both "collect the things" shows, while WH13 and Eureka both share that "twee 50s small town science" nostalgia. Eureka is probably the show with the most novel premise, as "collect the magical things" is an extremely well-worn path of genre show. It also has the big benefit of Joe Morton and Salli Richardson-Whitfield (and to a lesser extent, Matt Frewer) noticeably raising the acting water levels. This drives the writing in certain relationship drama focus directions. WH13 has both the most confident execution and the best cast chemistry. This makes it the easiest watch from moment to moment, as it can always just fall back on the warmth of the character interactions. (I actually find it less enjoyable when it gets into its serious season arc parts.) Both Eureka and WH13 seem to have stronger studio backing, as they snag quite a few guest stars above their expected "Canada Genre Show" levels. But Sanctuary is the only one of the three that comes close to Prestige TV. Whereas Eureka and WH13's writers collectively only had a couple of genre veterans (meaning that most of the writers hadn't done much genre or TV at all before their shows), Sanctuary's room is anchored by people who were on the Stargate franchise first (for years). They already got the obvious premises out of their system, worked out the kinks of writing genre TV. So Sanctuary is full of real high concept episodes, executed far earlier in their episode count than the other shows. The show's slightly more serious tone also plays a role in the prestige feel of the execution. The staff on this show knows what's been done already, and want to go further and push the envelope of what this kind of genre show can do. Most of Tumblr seems to now have a kneejerk reaction against Moffat-era Dr. Who, but this is a positive comparison I'm making to describe my sense of Sanctuary's ambition and novelty (while still remaining within an episodic genre show purview, unlike the wholly Prestige cases like The Oa, Black Mirror, etc.). An era where you remember the episodes by their genre content or structural setup, rather than by whatever moments are relevant to fandom-brain continuity. In Eureka and WH13, character and relationship comes first, sometimes to the point of feeling like the plotting is just an obligation to get over with. In Sanctuary, the plotting and premise exploration is clearly what comes first.

Favorite TV show?
I really like The Expanse while it was going, so for recent shows it'd probably be that.
Including even non-recent shows... I'm not sure, there's too many. Warehouse 13 is a contender, though it's been a long time since I've rewatched it.
The TV franchise i most consistently liked was probably star trek (yeah yeah I'm a nerd I know), partly because it brings up good childhood memories and partly because space cool
There's a ton of other series I could shout out but I'm sure I'd miss some so I think it's best to leave some mystery...
(Supplimental: as for anime, Saiki K is fantastic (the season 1 dub being my favorite), and I haven't watched enough other stuff to really know my preferences in that space. Mandatory honorable mention to Beastars, which was coincidentally also how I found out that my sibling is also a furry)

WIP Questions Tag
Rules : Answer as many (or as few) of the questions about your WIP as you can.
Tagged by @drawnecromancy! Read their answers for Le Prix du Sang here.
1. What was the first part of your WIP that you created?
Apophenia was originally a short story called "Dysthanasia" I wrote for an event on Ao3. Now Dysthanasia is the name of the series overall, and the story's a novel-length rough draft in the process of being rewritten.
2. If your story was a TV show, what would the intro song be?
Something short, instrumental, and spooky but with a touch of whimsy. Gotta have that little spark of fun or it'd wind up taking itself too seriously.
3. Who are your favourite character(s) and why?
I'm in love with all of them, but I have to stand by my protagonist, Isaac. He's a squishy human nerd, with no supernatural powers to speak of, but through being resourceful and more than a little lucky manages to survive awful situations. A lot of his characterization has to do with principles and compassion, but not quite in the soft or naive way readers might expect. His enemies repeatedly try to buy or break him, punishing him every time he does what he feels is right, but Isaac remains defiant, refusing to become jaded or take the easy way out. Is he destined to become a martyr? A monster? Stay tuned.
4. What other pieces of media could share a fan base with your WIP?
I'd hope The Vampire Chronicles fans would get into it. Maybe The Witcher fans, as far as characters relying on each other in an unjust world goes? Possibly readers of Octavia Butler, whose work I enjoy. I guess anyone who likes fictional organizations and the paranormal might see the appeal.
5. What has been your biggest struggle while writing your WIP?
Juggling all the backstory and worldbuilding that influences the characters and plot. So much happens before the actual story even starts. The death of Isaac's family. Renato becoming a bloodborn and his eroding loyalty to his sire. A cataclysm that reshaped the map. I'm doing my best to make these come through the text without hitting the reader with a wall of exposition.
6. Are there any animals in your story?
Living and undead! There's Renato's beloved goldfish, Tesoro. The elk, coyote, and bear Motley transforms into. Likewise the species of sharks that some of the good people of Eureka, Nevada can turn into. Or the livestock they raise, mainly sheep, goats, and chickens.
7. How do your characters get around?
Electric cars, horses, trains, or by turning into a much quicker animal.
8. What part of your WIP are you working on right now?
I think I'm almost halfway through the outline for the rewrite? Isaac is getting to know the supernatural locals of America's friendliest town on its loneliest road, and they him.
9. What aspects of your WIP do you think will draw people in?
Renato being a hot vampire, and there being different factions to identify with will probably lure some in. Hopefully they decide to stay for the characters, emotional arcs, and end of the world too.
Dysthanasia Taglist (Sign up or ask to be +/-): @thecyrulik @thatndginger @sunset-a-story @space-writes @scoundrelwithboba (feel free to consider this a tag for the game itself too)
Additionally @izzyspussy @wintherlywords @authoralexharvey @chauceryfairytales @autumnalwalker @revenantlore @captain-kraken @angsty-prompt-hole
Blank questions beneath the cut
1. What was the first part of your WIP that you created?
2. If your story was a TV show, what would the intro song be?
3. Who are your favourite character(s) and why?
4. What other pieces of media could share a fan base with your WIP?
5. What has been your biggest struggle while writing your WIP?
6. Are there any animals in your story?
7. How do your characters get around?

See, Dresden Files would be fucking GREAT if it didn't suck so badly!
Tumblr media
Like this is such a fun and jaunty intersection of stupidass nonsense with the barest hint of a genuinely funny joke that feels so incredibly homey to me, who sort of grew up on shoes like Eureka, Warehouse 13, Firefly, Haven, Being Human, Into the Badlands, and yes, Supernatural.
It's a damn shame that Dresden Files is brought down so low by the noir-style sexism. It could easily be dismissed as a deliberate choice by the author to make Dresden more of a loser, but I'm not really willing to give him that benefit of the doubt, because even when he seems to be deliberately playing with the concept, he flattens women out to "scary and tough cop!" Or "sexy and smart reporter! (who the protagonist has a lot of sex with!)" And seems uninterested in doing any more work on that front.
I almost want to cut Butcher slack on this, because he doesn't actually seem to be interested in doing much work on any characters at all! Harry himself is flat as hell, and a classic example of the awkward conflict between the author's desire to write a relatable everyman and a mysterious badass.
But I can't cut that slack. It's still abysmal. It takes a bit of stamina to read these otherwise-simple books because you just have to make yourself laugh at how fucking bad the writing gets.
And if you don't have that nostalgia for mediocre TV shows that I do, then... well, I can't offer advice any better than "give up".
There being like 40 books in this series leaves some space for optimism that Butcher may pick up on his writing flaws and actually write characters instead of pre-women's-suffrage caricatures that basically consist of planks of wood distinguished by their capacity to apply lipstick. But I probably won't read that far. Likely gonna call it quits after book 2.

THE ATLAS COMPLEX SPOILERS
ik it’s hinted that he’s alive when james wessex sees platinum blond but i still get irrationally angry every time i think about callum nova’s potential death. he wanted to die of high cholesterol not stupidly being shot by tristan’s dad because he stupidly made a deal he wasn’t even going to go through with.
if ur gonna let callum think all those happy eureka! thoughts right before his “death” and then end up killing him, it’s not bittersweet, it doesn’t fulfill his character arc, it’s just lazy writing. olivie blake wanted her readers to be upset, to immortalize her series with “oh what a great series” but this is NOT the poppy war or six of crows. bc those books had enough of the characters’ actions and fast paced plot to keep the reader engaged and it made the deaths kinda worth it. callum’s death wasn’t worth it.
and then she writes a cheap way out, one that blake hopes to keep people talking about her book more, one that gives her an easy way out if she gets accused of burying the gays (which she does THREE times in the series). she adds the platinum blond to the security camera and she hopes her book will live on with a #ambiguous! just like iwwv did.
i just don’t understand if 1) that was her plan all along in which case it was a terrible idea or 2) she got heavily influenced by social media and the fact that the TV show is in the works (which ugh reading the book it’s so obvious she was thinking about the show the whole time)
and also it sucks that she never told us what callum/tristan did in book 1 when tristan said “i see u” and callum let him in??? idk if she even knows what happened herself tbh

"your top 15 favourite tv shows can say a lot about your personality!"
Thank you so much for the tag @morkofday 🥰
How could I rank my top shows? They all mean so much to me and are all from different times in my life and from different genres... I can't compare Gilmore Girls to Moonlight Chicken! So without a rating here we go!
Gilmore Girls
Tumblr media
The show I watch to feel cozy and comfy! Most of the times I do a rewatch of my favorite episodes in autumn/winter and just enjoy Stars Hollow and all the quirky characters. And I am a huge fan of Lorelei... not her love life, but she is a strong and independet woman and I love that.
Moonlight Chicken
Tumblr media
What can I say? I love EarthMix and GeminiFourth! And the story was more of a family drama and something different than the usual GmmTV stuff. The story of letting go of the past and starting a new future, which is scary with all its obstacles, really captured me and I still think of it from time to time.
Pushing Daisies
Tumblr media
I love this bitter-sweet story of the unlucky pie baker and the love of his life never been able to touch each other but love each other nevertheless. The criminal cases were interesting and I enjoyed the colorful scenery, but nothing could top my love for Lee Pace. This man...
Unknown
Tumblr media
My new favorite show. I loved it from beginning to end. And I don't want to let go of them. The hurt is still too fresh to talk about them 😭 Their story was so well written and the actors were so good in portraying the characters and their inner monologues and thoughts and I love it so much!
Love for Love's Sake
Tumblr media
The one show I will never be able to get over. The feelings I felt after it ended were not normal! I was heartbroken! This series means so much to me and Myungha will be forever one of my favorite characters ever! The story is unique and beautiful and so deep! Damn, that is such a good show!
It's okay to not be okay
Tumblr media
This show that broke me on so many levels. The amount of tears I shed! It was really a journey and I loved the characters and their growth.
Queer as Folk
Tumblr media
I was obsessed with this show and him, Brian Kinney! The topics they showed were, and still are, so important and relevant. It is not just some gay men fucking, but different stories about the community and their problems, fears, breakthroughs and their every day life. And Debbie will be forever this iconic mother figure for all of them and for us too.
The Untamed
Tumblr media
I don't know how many shows broke me, but this one... this one hurt so good! It is such a masterpiece of a series. What is good and what is evil and aren't there multiple ways to get to the same goal? There is so much love in this series and so much pain. At its peak I cried for 15 minutes straight... One of my all time favorites, but I couldn't rewatch it yet. The pain is still too real. I convinced my best friend to watch it and now she is mad at me and can't go on with it, because the same scene broke her too and now she is afraid of more pain to come. I understand her so well!
A Breeze of love
Tumblr media
Most of the times there is this one show a year that blows me away and I can't get a grip in life afterwards. This year is somehow different as there are already two shows that had this effect on me, but for 2023 it was this here. It is such a simple story and there was nothing special about their story, but I adored it to the max and I rewatched it multiple times. I can't really tell why I love it so much, I just do.
Eureka
Tumblr media
This is one of the shows that can easily play in the background when I am doing other things, because I know it by heart. The amount of times I rewatched that is not normal and even though I don't really like the last season that much, the first three are hilarious and just so good!
Friends
Tumblr media
And another one I know by heart and could rewatch all the time. This show feels safe and there are so many memories connected here. I watched it after a bad breakup to give me some comfort or when I had a huge fight with my best friend, those friends were there for me. And even now I watch a few episodes when I feel down, because they can lift me up so easily.
Once Again
Tumblr media
Aaaand we have another one that broke me! Hurray! Guess I love cozy and comforting shows and those which totally destroy me. Great for me! This one had me sobbing during the whole last two episodes. I have my problems with time travelling, and I don't say it was a good execution here, but I just don't care, because the story is unique and special and I love it.
Be My Favorite
Tumblr media
The one that broke me and healed me withing hours. The beginning might be a little bit cringy, but it easily became one of my favorite shows out there. It feels so good to see the character growth and all the love that comes within. I still think about them very fondly.
A Tale Of Thousand Stars
Tumblr media
This back hug alone made it one of my favorite shows of all times. But for real, this started my EarthMix-love and I am still not over them. The story is beautiful and the scenery is stunning and the pining is perfect and I have so many emotions about them and this show!
Star Trek - The Next Generation
Tumblr media
Since I can remember I am a little trekkie, but only TNG. I love the cast and their adventures. I had a huge crush on Wesley when I was a kid. I watched his episodes so many times, it would be embarrassing, but that was what little Josi's heart wanted... Favorite character is by far Q. All of his episodes are hilarious and brilliant!
It was really difficult to break it down to only 15, because I love TV shows and there are some that I wish I could have put up here, but the rules are the rules.
I am as always lost who did this and who did not, so feel free to ignore me, if you don't want to or already did it! I am tagging @wen-kexing-apologist @pose4photoml @twig-tea and @troubled-mind

Having Big Realizations today that are literally changing the way I look at media and it's because of this post:
Tumblr media
I've been looking at Doctor Who wrong, I think. I grew up on it. It's been in my life with alarming consistency since I was 2, because that's when Rose was on for the first time, so I have this picture of what Doctor Who is "supposed" to be that's intrinsically tied to the Eccleston/Tennant era of the show.
I've been watching Classic Who, of course. I started on the Pertwee era and have been working through, and it's fun! I can look at it and see the connections between it and Modern Who, even if there are differences. But I wasn't just raised on TV that was on, I watched a lot of Farscape and Mystery Science Theater and TOS/TNG, which means I'm used to the style.
Then there are the Whittaker seasons, and I feel totally disconnected from them. Everything is sweeping and cinematic and doesn't really feel like the shows of the past.
But it feels like other shows that are on today.
I grew up on a standard of TV that was "things that feel like Warehouse 13, Eureka, and Lost". Things that feel like the Eccleston/Tennant era. And I'm familiar with and like other shows from the 3-7 era, MASH and TNG and probably other things, where the camera angles and story structure are Like That.
Doctor Who today has definitely suffered some Disneyfication, but that's because everything has suffered Disneyfication. Marvel movies and media have influenced everything to an astounding degree, but that's no different from things that have happened in the past!
1-2 are Twilight Zone and Hitchcock Presents
3-4 are TOS and Bond and MASH
5-7 are Quantum Leap and Red Dwarf
9-10 are Lost and Warehouse 13 and Eureka
11-12 are early Marvel and The Good Place and Black Mirror
and 13-15 are what's popular now, Our Flag Means Death and Good Omens and Stranger Things and everything else that has been thoroughly influenced by Disney and Marvel's deathgrip on media.
That's not a bad thing, and it took until now for me to realize that.
Doctor Who would not still be on if it didn't adapt and change. It has to adapt, has to regenerate, has to change the way it's presented. And fuck it, I'm going to dig in and enjoy it by the standards of media today, not by the standards of my nostalgia.

Ace, what is some underrated whump in your opinion? Thank you for all of your gorgeous gifs!
Oh okay do you mean like specific whumpy scenes/shows I think are underrated or like tropes? I'm gonna answer both how about that lol. Also thank you!! i'm so glad you like them!
Okay so some tropes I love but I think are totally underrated are :
A good lip quiver when the whumpee is trying not to cry
The aftermath of a near drowning. So often a character nearly drowns and then they're fine. Where are my chest infections and secondary drownings and coughing and all that comes with inhaling a shit ton of water
checking a whumpees fever by placing the back of your hand against their forehead
historical whump!!! of any era!! But i'd love to see more of like post Industrial Revolution whump (so after like 1840)
plane crashes
being ostracized from a group can make for great emotional whump
royalty whump
whumpees who get aggressive during recovery
FAMILIAL OR PLATONIC WHUMP RELATIONSHIPS
incompetent caretakers. just caretakers who have no fucking clue what they're doing but you know they try
being impaled ut it's gone through and trapped the whumpeed to the wall or ground or something
sleepy!! sleepy whump is the best and so underrated
Riley Poole (National Treasure), Jack Carter (Eureka), Will Gorski (Sense8), Dwight Enys (Poldark), Mon El (Supergirl), Pete Lattimer (Warehouse 13), Fergus Fraser (Outlander), Jack Robinson (Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries), Michael Westen (Burn Notice), and August Booth (Once Upon a Time) are underrated whumpees. I am in desperate need for more whump fanfics of these characters.
As for tv shows: Eureka is highly underrated whump show. I wish more people watched this show. Not only is there great whump for a bunch of characters (Jack is always getting whumped tbh) but the potential and fic ideas are GREAT.
Forever is also a whumpy show that is severely underrated! I mean that dude literally dies nearly every episode. The whump is amazing and I need content even though this show has been over for ages now.
Legend of the Seeker is also highly underrated as a whumpy tv show. I miss it so much.
And can we talk about period dramas because they got some good whump too.
