spoilers for nimona (2023)

just watched the new nimona movie and it was fantastic! great children's movie, excellent animation and clean plot progression. but it's missing something: the subversive morality that i first experienced when reading nimona as a kid.

in the actual comic, nimona killed people. she was morally gray- she took that step into murder and atrocity. in the movie, she's a punk kid who likes to make (admittedly pretty scary) faces and joke around about death, but it doesn't seem like she's actually gotten around to the real murder part.

and you know what? i get it.

this movie isn't meant to be the book, and that's fine. it's a wholesome misunderstood hero story for kids and a non-controversial way to have positive queer representation without compromising the themes with characters that aren't 100% good and sweet and lovely. it's great for a mainstream audience.

here's the thing: it would've been so much more INTERESTING if nimona WAS the killer. i was expecting it as a plot twist the whole movie- nimona impersonating the director (who was, tbh, not a very interesting twist villain, especially with her lack of forshadowing and her very easy and quick admit to her crimes- you'd think such a high-ranking individual would know better than to confess her sins and then murder the direct descent of gloreth in her office)

nimona has been trying and trying to convince ballister to reform the system the whole movie, saying that he SHOULD be mad, the INSTITUTE is what's in the wrong, not JUST the director. they can't run away- they have to fight back! that would've been such good foreshadowing for her having orchestrated the whole thing, with her being clearly shown to be able to shift into other people.

i'm almost convinced that the writers initially planned for that as the plot progression and then edited it to make it more family-friendly.

so in an ideal world, here's what i think should've happened:

nimona actually does frame the director for the murder- but as revenge for experimenting on and torturing her, as in the book. ballister is pardoned by the public and by ambrosius, but then the director shows the video footage of nimona shapeshifting into her, and the consequent sword-swapping. in a nutshell, nimona uses ballister to kill the queen and tries to manipulate him to help the world change, for a place where she isn't tortured needlessly just for being different.

ballister, betrayed, fights with nimona (insert key weakness that she has told only him here) and she is captured. the director informs him of the experiments on nimona (while dismissing her as a heartless monster) and he is horrified. the director reveals her new plan to get rid of (non-existent) potential monsters in the city like nimona (witch-hunting, reference to eugenics, you get it). ballister and ambrosius free nimona, and they work together to stop the enby-murder laser or whatever, nimona sacrificing herself in the process (or does she...). the ending remains the same from there.

the unfortunate issue with queer media at the moment is that people need it to be pure- a depiction of a morally gray queer character right now might throw the whole theme into question. after all, if queer people aren't perfect, than they're dead. which is interesting, because that's kind of the theme of nimona, in a sense. a narrative about people who are different, and for that reason alone are unforgivable monsters.

queer and disabled folk (see attorney woo, a show i love, for a similar problem) aren't allowed to be flawed in media. if they're not paragons of humanity or supergeniuses, they can't be accepted. nd stevenson was one of the first authors i ever saw really subvert that in widely known media meant for teens.

real life people aren't going to be as forgiving as the movies make it look. i liked the old nimona because she reflected that- she was not a sinless matyr in the end- she gave into her rage and despair and let it warp her. did that make her a monster? no- it made her human. queer media is trying its best, but in the end the issue is the very inhumanity of perfection.

The possibilities of Sandalpunk

It's punk-o-clock again and today I wanna speak about that punkpunk genre, that might well be one of the most loosely defined: Sandalpunk. Really, trying to find something about this genre, I found that people do not agree about...

... if the genre at all is scifi, retrofuturist and/or fantasy and in how far

... what consistent themes of it should be

... what even the aesthetic is past "Ancient Rome/Greece"

... what kind of stories should be told in this genre

To put it differently: Sandalpunk right now is very much a title, but not a genre. Because there is absolutely no consistent anything within this "genre". But... I am gonna argue now, that it is kinda a waste, because there is a lot of potential there.

For those dipping into this blog for the fist time, let me quick go into the definition from Wikipedia on punk ideology, that I am going to use to assume that at least some of this should be present within a genre for it to be worthy of the punk-moniker:

[Punk Ideology] is primarily concerned with concepts such as mutual aid, against selling out, hierarchy, white supremacy, authoritarianism, anti-consumerism, anti-corporatism, anti-war, imperialism, conservatism, anti-globalization, gentrification, anti-racism, anti-sexism, class and classism, gender equality, racial equality, eugenics, animal rights, free-thought and non-conformity.

So, if I was trying to define Sandalpunk somehow, I would want to somehow bring that into it.

The other aspect the -punk genre have is, that they are somehow going into the scifi or fantasy genre, often doing a somewhat retrofuturist spin on things.

So, based on that we now have the three following ideas:

Based on the cultures of Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece

Anti-Hierarchical and Anti-Imperialist ideas

Retrofuturism, possibly with some fantasy elements

And I think we can actually get a working concept from this.

Because of course especially ancient Rome and to a lesser degree Ancient Greece were expansionist empires. Both cultures (though this is your scheduled reminder that due to the length of time these empires lasted the culture shifted) were very hierarchical, very classist and were very much about conformaty.

We still very much live in a Roman world, even though we usually do not think about it that way. But because of how Rome had colonized most of Europe before the Empire fell - and because of how it was Rome who went out and propagized Christianity, with the religion now inextricably linked with Roman culture to this day, being used to propagate Roman ideals to this day.

So, imagining a retrofuturist setting with Roman influence could actually mirror some real developments we see these days - just with less Christianity. And an added bonus is: The Romans already knew about steam power - they only in the real world had never figured out how to productively use it. (Mostly because slave labour was cheaper.)

And this could actually make for a super interesting set up for a genre.

Let me paint that picture for you:

It is 1300 AD, the Roman Empire has never fallen and has by now colonized all of Europe, with the exceptions of some parts in the far north, as well as most of North Africa and West Asia. The Roman Empire has since advanced their technology considerably, outmatching most of the rest of the world in technology. They have stern rules about the way people can and cannot live, their world being divided between the classes. However... There are some that do not want to accept the Roman rule, being willing to fight against it. Groups of people trying to keep alive their indigenous cultures, offering each other mutual aid, trying to survive under the thumb of the Empire.

I think there is a lot of potential there. Playing around with how the Roman Empire had influenced our world, making it more visible than it usually is. With a world that is familiar and yet isn't. The possibilities are endless. And of course we can have people rebelling against it.

And hey, maybe the Roman gods play a role in this world as well?

Right now Sandalpunk is not much more than a word. But that could be done with it. So... Maybe someone just gotta start writing this genre? For real, I mean. Rather than people just looking random things featuring mildly anarchronistic Roman things and go: "Oh! Sandalpunk!"

Hot cocoa and Helen with Efial from Cards Swords and Cups

"Aren't you tired of the establishment treating you like garbage just because you were not born in one of the 'cool' families? Aren't you tired of the constant -unjust- justification of literal eugenics? Don't you wish things could be better? Helen is her name. You would know that because of how infamous she's become at the campus. A reputation of a brute, crude mannerless woman who picks up fights with everyone she disagrees with, a punk. She does look pretty intimidating. You don't exactly disagree with what she is saying- she does have a point, you just don't really like the whole set up. Isn't she always a little... too extreme?

Efial is his name. He is a total John Doe. There is nothing noteworthy about him. Yet he stands besides Helen. Maybe things are more nuanced than rumours have them be.

They (society) hate girlbosses like us (Helen) win. So they damage their reputation to deligitimise their causes. Sure, Helen might come off as unfriendly and kind of scary, but she is far from that. From a fantasy setting where magic, a talent reserved for few people is secret from the common populace. And with most mages being extremely conservative, there's even discrimination amongst mage classes both in economic terms and lineage terms. There are many flaws in the mage society and so she decided that if no one will fight for a better one, she will take the first step, and kind of started a student movement and became the face of said movement despite her wishes. The demands are simple "if non-mage populations can still be victimised by misuse of magic, they should at least know what happened. Use magic for the betterment of all humanity, not just mages. End the blatant discrimination of non-noble mages in all mage associated institutions" and more alike. Efial, while initially recruited as a normal member, has quickly become Helen's right hand man. On top of that they are great friends. I am sure nothing bad awaits them down the line-

Lynn Compton— Wasn't he kind of athletic? If so he definitely has a workout playlist that's full of either really hyper-feminine music or 90s rock.

Ralph Spina— He loves music from the 60s-70s... Southern Nights by Glen Campbell is one of his favourite songs.

Eugene Roe— @chaosklutz helped with this one; Jazz. I could imagine him listening to Let's call the whole thing off by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.

Babe Heffron—Indie pop or Indie rock... Hes an avid listener of lovejoy. He also listens to Hozier from time to time.

Shifty Powers— Folk... He's from Virginia but if I remember correctly it's a rural area. He definitely likes John Denver and The Oh Hellos.

Joseph Liebgott— Klezmer the folk music of Ashki Jews!! Example; Dona Dona by Nikitov. On the other hand, I could see him listening to alternative/indie like Blur or haim.

Warren Muck— he listens to anything but he tends to favour the 80s. He loves Come On Eileen but also 500 miles? He'd play that whilst in the car with Penkala and Malarkey.

Alex Penkala— Don't ask me why but I think he'd listen to new wave. Think Duran Duran, Blondie, or B-52s. He might listen to the ramones from time to time.

David Webster— Whilst studying Webster has definitely chosen classical as his go to. He's a big fan of Saint-Saens and Tchaikovsky. However, when listening to music on the radio he prefers something a bit more quiet... His taste clashes with Toye and Guarnere. Though, I could see him trying to act as if listening to the smiths is really underrated. As if they're some underground band.

Edward Tipper— I think he likes 60s pink Floyd... Like See Emily Play Pink Floyd. He might also enjoy The Beatles or The Stone Roses. Like Rock that borders being pop.

I wish I could say, "I can't even spend a pride happy, can I?" But to do that, would to be lacking in acknowledging that pride is a riot for an ongoing issue, an issue that, much like iron crosses in the punk scene, our very own enemy has worked their way into ranks, and threatens to undo us entirely, because as it turns out, it's easier to fall back into hatred, than to walk forward in love.

It's just sickening to me how like, even within the people I meet offline, it feels like 60-70% of feminists and queer people don't just want the boot off their chest. They want THEIR boot on someone's chest. They dont want the oppressor out of power, they want to have his favor. They want their own ironed uniform, shined boots, lint-less authority cap.

People who come from families of oppressors who cannot imagine a happy world that doesn't denote a lesser sex, a lesser race, a lesser class, someone to work to the bone and put to death, someone to wave their pitchforks at.

Genuinely so many people who's perfect world is one of goverment overseen genocide, eugenics, people who speak of controlled, mass death as "cleansings". The person who is treated poorly and reacts with daydreams of "revenge" a revenge that will be carried out as a new regime. "I don't deserve to be raped... but some people do. I don't deserve to be put to death, but some people do. I don't deserve conversion, but some people do. I don't deserve to be treated so terrible, but someone must be. If someone isn't treated terrible, than how can I be at the top with my oppressor? To rise up is to pull someone down!"

It's why "who is and who isn't LGBT" discourse shows up EVERY YEAR. It's why "exclusionist" labels grow stronger every day. Why "trans men are seperate from cis men because they know ~female pains~" is such a common take. It's why "your queerness makes my queerness look bad!" Is so heavy the slightest bit of diversion from the norm even among queers is so intense and often.

Why can't you imagine a world without hate? Why is your utopia one of PUNISHMENT? Methinks you're probably suffocatingly unable to unlearn the white supremacy you were raised with. You were taught that to be the oppressor was to be thriving. But more than that, you were taught that being uncomfortable with unusual people meant they were wrong, and that if you can't understand someone's identity or experiences, than they are a danger.

There's a reason you eat up the very rhetoric that seeks to bury you, not leaving enough time between each place to wipe your mouth. Every year, trans women are sex pests to you, just with different reasoning. Every year, trans men are sexless butches, just with different reasons. Every year, lack of conformity in identity must be an attack, you've just found unconformance that doesn't apply to you now. Every year, someone makes you look bad to people who already want you dead, and you blame your own siblings for it instead. Every year, your craving for exclusionism and a unified "one experience" splits the community further and further.

Every year, you choose to show me that your perfect world is already alive, you just don't like the role you were stuck with. You teach me that if your pleas are answered, you would not advocate for us you left behind. Not only that, but you would join the attack and not think twice. There are people who may read this and still not understand this post is about them. The punishment hungry, the neverwrong, reaching out for a lack of communication, seeking to tell me "I don't understand you, we don't understand you, why won't you die? Don't make me kill you."

I wish I could say it's an exaggeration. But many of the people who say "just go offline" lack the realization, saying that from their own computer, just how many people outside of the internet as well, lack a truely queer mindset. The majority of the people I meet belive in the inherent morality of sex, that you are born as good or evil based on the genitals you grow. The majority of the people I meet treat even they/them pronouns with a reluctant smile, and requests to use them are met with passive aggressive treatment. The majority of the people I meet believe a trans person who does not perfectly emulate the standard of their gender is an embarrassment and "poor example." The majority of the even online queer community, finds me too queer and to be corrected by being beaten into line. The majority of the supposed allies are all to happy to hate me for my queerness.

Not everyone lives in queer heavy places, and still than, many of these queer people are not queer of mind at all, and are all to happy to be a straight homosexual. Never queer never gay, never a friend to the faggot or dyke or transsexual. "One of the good ones." An ally for now and a predator later. All too happy to play in on games of the transsexual predator and the homosexual molester.

Every year, a different queer identity is a threat to "the kids". You just can't let it die.

He dresses like that because he wants to be intimidating but approachable. He's a very sweet guy. Sweetheart is one of his favorite words. He's a dork but he will defend you with his life. He jabbers about music too fucking much. He wants to teach you how to play any instrument you're thinking about impulsively learning. Wants to go walk around the city, raid vending machines, walk around in a group with his friends - he hates being alone. But he likes protecting what he cares about.

Even if he isn't the quickest to fisticuffs. He just literally wants to be cool and also soft as shit.

And most punks! Are exactly that! They defend ppl, they're a community that's Different and Weird and have horrible representation as jackasses who will steal your girlfriend or call you slurs. When really they're very fluid in sexuality and in gender, and they took your girl because they literally treat her better /lh

Anyway, I just like that ppl make Eugene a dork. I make him a softy that will punch someone for you. That's also a dork.

Ok so i'm gonna be honest, I've been thinking about this question for a while and I legitimately have NO CLUE what Philoe's keepsake could be because her backstory is barely much more than an outline despite her being almost 2 years old

I don't think she'd have any specific powers 🤔

She most likely thought about it before but never went through with it because becoming a monster isn't exactly part of her bucketlist as of now

Philoe would probably listen to stuff like acoustic punk, Gideon's music tastes are a mess, he basically listens to everything except for what he doesn't like

OK SO I THOUGHT ABOUT IT FOR PHILOE IN THE PAST and her first appearance would probably be around the end of Sean's chapter and then she'd be pretty reoccurring from then on, but she'd be especially present during Early sleep and Charlie's chapter because she basically thinks that Eugene is an absolute fucking moron to prefer the underworld over his life cause they're around the same age and he's alive while she's dead, as for Gideon he'd most likely be a background character during the living part, i like the idea that if he were to be in the game you'd have the option to help him out, cause the guy tends to be really tired all the time

Philoe is around 1m54 (5'0 if i listen to google) and Gideon is around 1m60 (5'3) as a teen and 1m72 (5'7) as an adult

They've met before since Gideon tends to stray a bit from his body when he gets ejected out of it in order to find someone to help him, Philoe thinks he's a nice guy but maybe a bit too polite, Gideon is very polite around her cause he's scared of frustrating her

Philoe would probably just wish to be alive again if that was a possibility. I'm not exactly sure for Gideon tho I'd probably have to think about it 🤔

any sad thoughts about my favorite gays today?? i'm still in the same sad mood lol

been thinking a lot about Preserum!Steve and his gender identity and manhood. like I can recall a post talking about eugenics in the US in the 40s and how steve would have undoubtedly been a victim or could have been a victim of it.

Like you can just imagine it? (prewarning, I don't know a lot about eugenics in the 1930/40s)

Steve first time having to go to the hospital after his mom died? Bucky has to drag him down there because every home remedy they have tried hasn't worked. Steve hates the doctor's office, hate the looks everyone gives him. Bucky makes sure he gets into the office with a nurse, but can't stay he's got to get to work.

"Someone's gotta pay the rent, punk."

But Bucky doesn't get it. Doesn't understand what happens to people like Steve in a place like this. Between his record for getting into fights and poor health, Steve knows he isn't going to come out of this hospital visit whole. They are going to further make him some kind of freak.

So it takes a few days for him to come back to their apartment. Steve is paler, his eyes are not really focused on anything. He's not really sure how even made it back, he just knew he had to leave that hell. It was bad enough what they'd done to him, but he can't think to face Bucky now. Not when he is so other. He doesn't even know if his dick still works after the hack job they performed on.

The whole situation makes Steve angrier, he gets into more fights and makes him close himself off from society. He doesn't feel like a man anymore, not that he really felt like a whole man to begin with, but at least he had all the right parts before that fucked up operation. Steve doesn't know what he is anymore, if he could even call himself a He.

His confusion and rage only grow as his feelings for Bucky get muddled and the war efforts increase. He's not sure how, but Erskine believes in him, believes he will be what America needs to turn the tides of the war and win. Even with his deformities, with his otherness.

"What makes a good man comes from here."

And for a while, the big body, all muscles and capabilites helps Steve feel like the man the government has painted him out to be. The chorus girls think he is just swell for being so polite and gentlemenly. On stage and in the movies he is the picture of the perfect man, but on the inside he feels like he is dying because Steve Rogers knows that he isn't Captain America. He can never be that symbol the goverment has made him out to be because of what the goverment did to him.

When he's in Europe, when he is actually fighting, he can forget that he isn't a real man again for a while longer. He has a purpose, he has a goal and people who are depending on him. Steve can't think about his own problems after what happened to Bucky. He can't because it's not fair. Bucky was everything he'd ever wanted to be and have. He will do whatever it takes to make sure Bucky is made whole again even it means burying any feelings he has deep down.

After everything, it just makes sense for him to go down the Valkyrie. The one person Steve was living for is gone. The last thing he thinks about before the ship hits the water is that he hopes he can see Bucky again. That'll he get to open his eyes and they'll be in their apartment. It's summer and the sun shining and they are both whole.

I'm screaming this show is so good I can't even describe it fully.

Like on paper? Motorcycle guys who fight and are gay. Advance Bravely has that too- but AB is pulpy, romantic fluff with action-candy for lack of a better term, it's muscles and motorcycles and fights cause its hot and manly, it's romance cause it's romcomy, its a light time overall with only a few story beats of seriously heavy fight moments that are big in plot, of characters in pain figuring things out. Its fantastical in presentation, it's not realistic

Not Me... is a much bigger plot than a romcom slice of life. It's a mystery investigation, a character who wants to be good for society learning he was Wrong and learning from heartfelt new peers who are working hard to invoke change (and all their extended peers like grams ex and Eugene's dance companions and name's art). It's action to tell the story of bravery and fear and hard work, of goals and hopes and risk. It's the setting it is of punks at a garage because their life situations by definition are not the same as whites cushy nice house and sheltered upbringing, and their goals require the help of people people Gumpa who'd be willing to support their efforts and help them pursue them successfully and realistically. It's use of music isn't for the aesthetic as much as it's first for the story and moment being told. Like.

Back when I saw the original trailer a long while back Not Me didn't look like this yet, wasn't this fully well put together or realized yet. But now it is out and it's so lovingly well made and succeeding at exactly what it's trying to be. And it's something I've never seen before

her hair is still short and deep deep brown/black. she dyes a streak, usually blue or green but has done purple in the past.

if she wears makeup, it's usually dramatic. smokey shadow, jet black eyeliner, and deep/bold lip colours. she is willing to do "no makeup makeup looks" for work (to avoid being told she looks tired/sick) but they're the bane of her existence

she likes to have mostly low maintenance habits, and isn't too concerned with her looks (as long as he doesn't have to wear a dumb uniform), however she has a proclivity for getting her nails done as slightly impractical stilettos in her favourite dark colors or jewel tones.

keeps her hair short and/or tied back most of the time but she enjoys taking the time to do it fancy when she has an occasion (or just whenever).

she doesn't often bother with makeup but when she does she gravitates towards light-feeling products in pinks, soft browns, yellows, etc. Hates covering up her freckles but likes a soft, glowy blush. it's a challenge.

she keeps her nails short and natural but sometimes paints them, loves to do free-hand nail art. it always chips fast, she uses her hands a lot.
