Every day I think about The Acolyte as an audiobook narrated by Tatiana Maslany. Because she narrated the Hunger Games audiobooks and she just has the emotional range that Ailani’s story needs—

hey.
you have staying power in people’s lives. I’ll say it again: you have staying power in people’s lives.
you exist. you have a presence in your best friend’s life. you have impacted their life. you exist to them regardless of whether or not you’re in contact with them at this very second. in the course of their day, they will see things that can (and have) reminded them of you. they think about you. they miss you when you’re not there.
you’re not a nebulous creature that has no sway in another person’s life. no, my treasure, you are a person who is full of personality, light, love and interests shared in common with the people you most care about.
I know what you feel, but I promise you.
You matter, objectively, to the people who love you. They’re not going to forget about you. You are not disposable.

@ailani-reillata
i love tragedy.
i love when a story is sworn to end horribly, no happy endings. it’s fated to fail, and everyone within it will either be dead or go mad or lose everything they love and then some. if only orpheus hadn’t turned back. if only achilles would have listened to patroclus. if only romeo had received the second letter. if only they weren’t all doomed right from the start.
but they’d do it anyway, every single time. to continue to go on knowing something will end in pain is the epitome of love.
if we didn’t love so much, there would be no tragedy. if we don’t accept tragedy, there would be no love at all.

I’m never gonna stop talking about Sleeping Beauty now. After that first post, you’ve all got me talking about the symbolism and references, and now I can’t stop.
Because before she is cursed and removed from her parents and her home, Aurora receives two gifts. Beauty and song.
Specifically: Lips that shame the red, red rose, and Melody her whole life long.
In Begged and Borrowed Time, Ailani receives a deep red lip tattoo to honor her Mother. And later in life, Ailani learns something she calls “the song of the stars” (ancient Mandalorian celestial navigation) to honor her father. I’m just saying. She was born with the gift of beauty and song to honor her parents before she was taken away—

Ailani’s story is obviously based on my life experiences and cultural background, but her story is also shaped by media I love, and media that shaped me.
In this post, I want to talk about Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. I watched this movie as a kid, and the themes pop up regularly in Ailani’s tale. The art style, the music and the entire aesthetic just spoke to me, and really impacted my view on stories. Sleeping Beauty introduced me to tragedy, and therefore, it also gave me Ailani.
In this story, a young girl is born to a Queen. Despite the riches of her mother’s kingdom and the strength of her father, this young girl has been dead since the beginning. The narrative claims the child the moment she is born. In an attempt to save her from this terrible fate, the girl’s parents send her away to live with magical beings. These beings raise the girl to the best of their ability, but they fail to fully understand the young girl's needs, thus leaving her constantly yearning for more. More attention, more socialization, more meaning.
Shortly before her birthday, this young girl meets a young boy and instantly connects with him. They are both dreamers, trapped by their circumstances and longing for something more. They bond over their strange childhoods and lonely hearts. However, before they can truly know each other and fall in love, they are swept up into a world of magic and mystery—a world neither of them is prepared for. The boy fights to save the girl, but ultimately, she still falls victim to her fate. She has been doomed since the beginning.
And that’s the story of Begged and Borrowed Time— I mean Sleeping Beauty, I mean—

And don’t even get me started on the fact that Aurora is given a fake name to keep her safe when she lives with the fairies, and Ailani is given the last name Réillata when she lives with the Jedi, despite it being a made up political title chosen by her Mother.
Don’t even get me started bc then I’ll tell you that both Réillata and Briar Rose are mere shadows of their actual names and meanings. A rose is never as pretty as the Aurora of dawn and Réillata is nothing compared to the ancestral names Ailani never got to belong to—

Begged and Borrowed Time: The Acolyte
Oc Centric - Multichapter - 216k - Rated T
Summary: The Separatist Crisis has reached its peak. War looms throughout the galaxy, casting a dark, bloody shadow over the thinning ranks of the Jedi Order. The end of civilization has already started. This is the story of Jedi Acolyte Ailani Réillata. Her end has just begun.
A/N: Part One of Begged and Borrowed Time is finally complete!! Thank you so much for following me on this journey and supporting my creativity. There aren’t enough worlds in the universe to describe my gratitude. Your kindness and enthusiasm made this work possible, and I’m so so honored to share this entire fic with you all. It’s been two years in the making, and I’m so grateful to be here at the end. Your support and encouragement kept me creative and kept me going. Thank you so much, for everything.
Hopefully, we’ll all be able to enjoy “Part Two: The Wanderer” soon.
Thank you for everything,
Ivy

A very important distinction in Wolffe and Ailani’s relationship is that they both want comfort not betterment.
They don’t want to get better, they want to be reassured and comforted. Being better means acknowledging all the ways they are flawed and all the ways they were unmade by the war, and neither of them want to do that.
After the war especially, both of them are just so beaten down and exhausted. Ailani wants a guiding light and Wolffe wants to be needed. They both get what they want.
