Chimes at Midnight, or an EoY Ramble.
Tumblr media
(divider by @saradika - thank you so much for your incredible work)
Who can cling to a ramblin’ Rose?
Good question. But cling to me for a few moments, as I ramble my way through an end of year post - of sorts. Personal shenans ahead.
I have no great wisdom to impart. No life lessons, no affirmations, just reflections and observations after a year where my entry into this fandom brought me much joy, kindness, love, and strength - and, unfortunately, some upset, hurt, and pain, too.
But then, such is life, and while many of us use this space as an escape, the dynamics of just being human can’t help but filter through here, too.
I (and my 120k and counting words of fic - correction, my “ethical porn for nerdy types”) am here because of an alignment of events in early 2023. Here is my origin story:
I was stopped in my tracks one day by a friend’s Instagram story - or, specifically, by the twinkly-eyed, crinkly-eyed, smiley handsome man being interviewed in the video they’d shared. And something fired in my brain (bear in mind, a reaction like that is highly unusual for me).
Around the same time, my divorce process began. After a day of crying in my office and/or on the street, my sister sent me a message with some advice: You need something distracting and comforting. Watch The Mandalorian. You’ll like it.
(This is all her fault.)
I can only blame traumatised soon-to-be-divorcée brain for the fact that I didn’t quite immediately put the twinkly-eyed handsome smiling man together with the tin can dad with a voice like melted chocolate and an adorable green child that reminded me of my toddler niblings. Whoops.
Tumblr media
(Sorry, P. Divorcée brain!)
Long story short: it clicked, eventually, and with a hop, skip and a jump from “hey there, handsome” to “I love him a normal amount” via SNL, I ended up here.
People often compare Tumblr and fandoms to the purest form of childhood friendship. Oh, you have a Bluey backpack? I like Bluey too. Let’s be friends? And it’s a perfect analogy. It was a joy and a comfort to realise that, after a lifetime of feeling like I had to hide and be ashamed of the things and people who made me happy, there were other people just like me who didn’t feel shame, and who helped me realise this was…normal? And good? And, though this might seem like a contradiction in terms, healthy?
I rediscovered the pure joy of shared fangirling (gn). I read other people’s beautiful fics and, overcoming my fears and anxieties, rediscovered the person I’d been until I went to college and only wrote academically/professionally - the person who always made up little stories for herself, who tapped out “novels” on her mother’s 1970s portable typewriter, who never went anywhere without a copybook for writing and drawing her stories, who dreamed of being a writer. I started to write Visiting, and people actually read it.
And through that, and reading their words and talking/flailing in their DMs, I connected with people who in some cases became close friends. People who seemed to like me for me, for the me I was re-learning how to be after an incredibly traumatic period in my life. And that meant - and means - the world.
(Not all of those connections or friendships were sustained, and I still don’t really understand what happened to end them - in some cases, abruptly and without explanation. All I can do is remind myself that people need different things at different times, wish them well, and allow myself to miss them.)
Tumblr media
Gratitude sometimes gets a bad rap as a practice but it can be freeing and healing. So, putting aside the hurt and negative experiences and focusing on the good:
I am grateful for the affirming, kind, supportive relationships I’ve built through a mutual love of one (1) man.
I am grateful for the way my presence in this community, however marginal and irrelevant I might feel, is kept going through mutual support and silliness.
I am grateful for the opportunity to rediscover writing as creative practice and fun, rather than just something I have to do in my line of work (and which is bound up with anxiety in that respect).
I am grateful for the people who take the time not just to read but to respond to, share, and love on my work. (You’re amazing and I love you all!)
I am grateful for the people who showed and show me love even though they’ve never met me in person, and in myriad ways. (These ways include personalised birthday poems and fancams, sending me a copy of Esquire out of sheer kindness and surprising me - and my neighbour, who took in the package - with a talking Dinjamin figure. You all know who you are.)
I am grateful to my friend for her thirsty Instagram story and to my sister for her unwittingly consequential TV recommendation.
Tumblr media
And some general observations and reflections about my presence, experiences, and work here that I want to carry forward into 2024:
Popularity is definitely not a marker of quality.
You are entitled to have opinions and share them, even if they don’t follow the prevailing wind. Arguably, especially then.
Your feelings are valid.
Trust your gut.
It’s okay to want people to read and interact with your work, and to wonder why it doesn’t get picked up, no matter how many ‘write for you!’ posts you see from the Big Writers.
Speaking of which: if there’s room for everyone and everything, then there should be room for everyone and everything. Not just the chosen few and a handful of tropes.
Responsibility is a two-way street.
You’re worthy of love, kindness, and respect.
The love you take is equal to the love you make - or, in other words, give love and be receptive to it, whether in affirming messages, positive comments, or a simple flailing, excited reblog.
Carry your little light, however fragile, into the new year.
With love, Rose. (And my Ben, below - print by the incredibly talented Alyssa Gonzalez)

What I bought in 2023
this is the first in a series of posts in which i reflect on my 2023 from a financial perspective, using data from my financial journal.
initially i wanted to just list everything i paid for chronologically, but then i realized that data without analysis is not going to be much useful. so here is all i bought in 2024, divided in categories!
these are all unnecessary purchases (so no groceries, rent, etc).
material stuff
a kpop photocard. i’ve already talked about this, i think. there were a couple of months at the beginning of the year in which i desperately wanted to collect photocards of this particular kpop artist. i already had 2 but when i finally decided to buy this third one, i realized that i was quite underwhelmed. i do appreciate them and look at them from time to time but the itch to spend even more money on them disappeared. i’m glad i did buy it, though, because otherwise i would have spent months obsessively thinking about wanting to buy one. giving in once meant peace of mind afterward.
plastic reusable water bottle. kind of a fail. i would love to use it more, but i’d need to hand wash it (if i don’t want the water to taste like soap) and i just can’t be bothered. i’m sure i’ll use it while traveling. also, it was super cheap for a reason! the nozzle is too big and uncomfortable. oh well, you live and learn.
new passport photos. that was unfortunately necessary & they are horrible photos too. frustrating.
socks. i was on a trip and forgot to bring socks, so i had to buy some there.
jewelry box. got it secondhand on Vinted after much thought. i don’t have much of a jewelry collection (if any) but i’d like to. i also wanted to get rid of all the small boxes and condense everything in 1 place. which worked for a while, but then someone gifted me more boxes and i can’t get rid of those ones, so that was kind of a fail.
2 secondhand books. i seriously do not need more books (i own like 20 that i haven’t read yet) but i have already read & resold one book so i’m not bothered about it. my rules with book buying are: 1) only if it’s secondhand, 2) only one for every secondhand bookshop i visit, 3) only stuff from my TBR list (that’s a more flexible rule, though). i’d say that it pretty much worked.
1 manga volume. I've been collecting this series for years because i love the art but, i've come to realize, not so much the story. i've decided to not purchase the next volume and am debating whether to sell the whole series as well.
yarn. i bought yarn for a sweater, for socks (three times), and for a cardigan (and its pattern). all in all, i’m satisfied with this amount. knitting can get expensive but i only bought yarn for planned projects, used my stash for at least another small 5 projects and i don’t think i’ll have to buy sock yarn for a while! money wise, i only had one doubt. a friend who also crochets told me that the website i buy my garment yarn at is too expensive compared to others. i thought long and hard about it & finally remembered that my friend’s cheaper yarn is super itchy. which is fine for her, as she mostly crochets bags, but i don’t knit bags! i knit sweaters! i’m fine with my yarn being a bit pricier if it makes for a comfier sweater.
25 padded envelopes. i used them when i sell my stuff online. i bought them new but secondhand on Vinted for a good price.
gifts. i bought 1 gift for a birthday and 2 for graduations. at the end of the year i tried to be smart and knit 2 gifts, but then i had to pay for shipping anyway so it didn’t save me any money. still, you know. it’s gifts and it’s my friends and i won’t be cheap with them.
immaterial stuff & experiences
i ate out with friends 3 times this year. the other times we just met and sat on a bench and talked.
movie ticket for Barbie. my only cinema going experience this year. that’s depressing. i’d love to go more in 2024.
underground ticket. that one time i forgot my underground card. ugh.
subscription to one of the secondhand book-selling websites i use. it’s the only one i pay for and it’s only 2€ a year. basically, it allows you to list more than 50 books at a time. i have 63 right now, so i’ll have to pay again this year, but hopefully in 2024 i will sell enough books to get under 50 & not have to pay again in 2025 :D
a very small charity donation. i sold more books than usual that month and decided to contribute a little to (hopefully) make the world a better place. it felt really good and i would like to do it again in 2024. but i need to set some rules or i might end up donating all of my savings.
trips
i went on 3 trips this year.
i bought train tickets and meals while there. i didn’t have to pay  for accommodation as thankfully i went to visit friends and stayed at their houses. i also bought some souvenirs (in moderation!), like a fridge magnet and a christmas tree ornament.
in conclusion & plans for next year
well, damn. i spent way less than i thought or expected! there were even 2 months in which i actually spent 0€. which i’m sure felt great at the time, but i quickly forgot about it & thought i'd never accomplish something like that, ever. queue to feeling guilty over spending money.
my only true indulgencies were while i was on a trip. and i remember feeling quite guilty about spending money while there, as well.
but that’s why i save money: to buy expensive yarn and enjoy myself while traveling. so why should i feel guilty about doing exactly that?
basically, i want to spend a bit more money next year if it will make my life easier or happier, without feeling guilty. I've tried to do that during december already but finding the balance between overspending and being a Scrooge is going to be tough.

It's an end-of-the-year recap!!!! And what a year it has been! Thank you, @fellowshipofthefics, for putting together this wonderful recap list! Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the people who have supported me on my writing journey this past year. The Bagginshield fandom has been a haven filled with some of the kindest and most talented people I have had the pleasure of getting to know.
I look forward to another year with all of you.
Let's begin!
~~~~
What is something new you tried with your writing this year?
This was my first year as a fic writer, so everything was something new! I was really focused on building the "voice" of my writing, and I think I did that.
Did you participate in any fandom events?
Oh yes. I did the Thorin Spring Forge (TSF), Kinktober, and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Collaboration (THAUC). I also did about half a dozen drabble events and fotfics monthly events.
What's been your favorite project to work on?
There were not many, but I think for me my favorite was the TSF event. It was a big chance to produce my first ever long-format fic, and the reception it got was more than I could have imagined. You Should Be Safe With Me now sits as my highest kudo's fic.
What was the hardest project to work on?
Sparks & Gardens, for sure. The story is one I'm in love with, but bringing it to life in a way that does it justice can be a struggle sometimes. A struggle I enjoy, oddly enough.
Did you start any projects?
Too many.
Did you finish any projects?
I did! Happy Accidents is a completed Modern AU trilogy.
How many WIPS do you have now?
Four (two posted to AO3)
Share your favorite scene/line!
In chapter three of You Should Be Safe With Me, Thorin busts into Bard's house because he thinks harm is befalling Bilbo. I love how gentle and soft Thorin is when helping Bilbo in that scene.
Share your favorite story title!
I'm very fond of Not Yours To Touch. It took me forever to name that fic!
What does your writing system look like? (i.e. brainstorming, writing, editing - how do you do it?)
Usually, it starts with a scene I like or a general concept. Then, I daydream about it a little and determine if it's a one-shot idea or a long-format idea. One shot, I start writing and see where the idea takes me. Long format I start jotting down ideas in bullet form until I have a really rough outline. Then, I flesh that out until I have a plot. When I have a series of events in order, I want them to happen with maybe a few vague details I start writing. I pause and reread/ rough edit after every chapter and check that my continuity is still good. When it's all done, I ignore it for a few days and re-read it again, then edit. Then it's off to my lovely beta reader, who edits and tells me if something doesn't make sense. Once I get that stamp of approval, I post.
What's the best atmosphere for you to write?
Left alone and quiet
Any particular snacks or drinks while writing?
I'm a beverage girly. I have water, coffee, and some fruit near me at all times. I don't normally snack and write. Most of the time, if I'm writing, I've forgotten to eat.
Do you form playlists/soundtracks for your stories? Or even just for your "writing time"?
Playlist, not really. As I said above, I prefer absolute silence when I write. I do have Pinterest boards for all my WIP's, however.
What advice would you give to a new writer?
You're going to have to be bad at it before you become good at it. So be bad at it and enjoy the process.
What are some goals you have for 2024?
Finish Sparks and Gardens. Finish reputation be damned, and if I'm really lucky, debut my Biker Gang AU. But really just to have fun.
Last but not least, General stats
Words posted to AO3 this year: 191,187
Fics posted to AO3: 22 (all but one was Bagginshield)
Current active WIP's: 2
I can't wait to see what 2024 brings, and I couldn't have done this without you.
2023 End of year keyboard review
Tumblr media
Hi yalls!
So we're approaching the end of the year. Since then, more keyboards have entered the market and I've managed to build some of them. At the same time, group buy orders managed to arrive. I'm so happy that I've been able to expand my collection with these items.
Honourable mentions
Due to how expensive the keyboard hobby is, I couldn't grab everything that was released this year. At the same time, I had to sell some of the keebs that I used to own due to a variety of reasons.
For starters, the QK and Jris series have been super amazing for opening doors for high-quality budget options in the market. I own the QK75 and remade my first keyboard build and I swear to god the improvement is immaculate.
Next is Mode Designs. They have released a bunch of high-quality boards and boy howdy, I wish I could own them all. The Envoy was well-loved in the community and the release of the Loop is so cute. I wish I could grab my hands on it, but I'm satisfied with my Sonnet, which is still available to this day and now has new colour options.
Lastly, it's the established keyboard companies like Asus and Razer as they've released some hotswap keyboards. The one that caught my eye the most is the Azoth. I would trade in my old Corsaid K70 for that keyboard. If anyone is willing to do so, hit me up.
Now, here are my top 5 boards.
5. The Dreamscape build
Tumblr media
We all know how I've felt about this build. It took 2 years and it's finally here. I love this build for the soft aesthetic and I'm so glad I can finally use this keyboard. It's such a shame it took so long because there were times I was losing hope and was considering giving it a different build.
Specs:
Ikki Aurora x EPBT Dreamscape
EPBT Dreamscape
Gazzew Bobagums
Artisans from Namong and From Scratch
As for the use and feel, it's nice. A bit mushy cuz of the switches. But at least no one will get mad at me when I type during meetings because apparently, they can pick up my typing sounds. Its the ultimate dream silent keyboard.
I'm just happy this build is finally complete cuz omg, imagine if this went on to 2024. I would lose my sh*t.
4. Rama Thermal
Tumblr media
Getting used to the HHKB layout has been a challenge. Fortunately, I ended up getting used to it after a few months. I do miss my arrow keys but using function + WASD was a good alternative. I will admit that my productivity at work did slow down during the first few weeks.
Specs:
Thermal by RamaWorks
Osume Winterglow Eve
Clackbits
Artisans from Tulipclay
While Rama might have some controversies, it's actually a really nice board. Has a really unique look it, something that I'm after when I buy keyboards. However, after comparing it to other builds, it's not really great. The sound quality feels hollow (despite tape modding it), and the keycaps and switches sound output doesn't help at all so I ended up rebuilding it.
Right now, as of writing, I'm using temporary parts for a later build and it's going to take a while for me to find the right combo. I will update you once I made something worth showcasing a sound test. I am interested in trying out the Akko Penguin Silent Switches so hopefully a muted build is what this build needs.
If there is something I learned from this keyboard - DON'T BUY FROM RAMAWORKS.
3. The Nordic Build
The boards may look good but their reputation sunk so bad. I had to file a bank complaint just so they could reply and get this board shipped (mind you, it was a in-stock item).
Tumblr media
Originally, the keyboard that I wanted to use was the Loki65. But thanks to Mechs and Co, that was heavily delayed. I've always had eyes on the Fuji keyboard series since I started this hobby in 2021. So thanks to the Keebs For All Marketplace, someone was selling theirs for a good price and I got it.
Specs:
Fuji 65
EPBT Scandi
Hera Switches
Artisan from EzKeys
Aesthetics-wise, it looks pretty good. All the colours complement each other and I'm quite happy. The reason I wanted to make this build is that my favourite country is Iceland and I wanted to build a keyboard inspired by my trip there in 2019. The only flaw with this build is that the switches sound scratchy. But that's because I didn't lube them. Could be fixed if I do that.
I look forward to the day when the Loki65 gets shipped as I think my thoughts will change when it arrives.
2. The Tofu Build
Tumblr media
Believe it or not, this was the first keyboard I built this year and I'm quite happy with how it turned out. The reason why built this keyboard is because I was inspired by Magic The Gathering - Kamigawa Neon Dynasty and this build resembles that trading card set.
Specs:
Tofu 60 (the original)
PBT Fans Kabuki-Cho
Tecsee Ruby Switches
This keyboard is THOCKY. It's not as thocky compared to modern builds but it has that low-profile sound that was highly sought after during the pandemic. I can see why this was a beloved build back in the early days of the keyboard hobby.
While the Tofu has increased in price over the years, I believe it's a testament to how the hobby has changed. I'm glad to have a piece of keyboard history in my collection.
1. The Sonnet Build
Tumblr media
This has to be my newest go-to keyboard. From the looks, sound, and aesthetics, it was worth it. It took a while for me to figure out which keycaps to use since it originally had Osume Dusk. I think the greys from the Hooties are much better.
Specs:
Sonnet from Mode Designs
GMK Hooty
Popu Linears
Artisans from Hibi.MX and Geekkey
Using this board has that 5/5 experience. The sound is so satisfying, the feel is really nice. The artisans complement the board so well. And the fact that the Sonnet is a really good quality keyboard adds extra points. I highly recommend getting the Sonnet when you have the chance to do so.
2022 end-of-year fic review ✨
thanks to the wonderful @chispas-and-broken-bindings for tagging me! I know I've dropped out on fic writing this past 11 months but I was tagged and want to play :)
what's your ao3 account?
Vivilove
2. how many words did you write in total in 2022?
roughly 55k on ao3 (all but 900 of that was in January)
roughly 335k in original works (from February through December)
3. how many fics did you publish in 2022 // multi-chapter vs. one-shots?
three total - 2 multi-chapter (one was updates to an ongoing story) v 1 one-shot which I totally blame Christopher Catesby Harington and his sequel news for!
4. what was your longest-fic // shortest fic?
The one I wrote the most words on in 2022 was You Give Me Goosebumps. Started in early January and had it finished by month's end and it clocked in around 44k words. The shortest was We'll Say Hello Again at 900 words (again, I blame Kit)
5. what was your most popular // least popular?
The Farmer's Wife has by far the most kudos, subs, comments and bookmarks. I guess the one shot was least popular but I really appreciated all the lovely folks who popped into the comments to say hello when I posted it <3
6. what fic didn't perform as well as you thought it would?
I was happy with the response to all of them.
7. what fic performed way better than you thought it would?
Honestly, it became hard for me to predict the fandom's reaction to my stuff by the time I decided I needed a change. I was satisfied by how these three fics performed. I do remember having the most fun with the commenters on Goosebumps trying to solve the mystery :)
8. what was your favorite fic you wrote in 2022?
Goosebumps was the most fun to write as fics go but I've loved the books I've written since then more.
9. what was your favorite fic that somebody else wrote in 2022?
Now, this is why I really wanted to do this!! I'm totally cheating and talking about multiple fics. Sue me. I'm not reading nearly as much fic anymore but I love an excuse to talk about the ones I adored. So, in no particular order, my faves from last year were:
Take me out and Lounge act by @cellsshapedlikestars I'm picking on her but I loved both of these and also help me out of the shape I'm in which finished in '22 as well :)
Reach out with both hands by @thewolvescalledmehome Oof, I always love her wounded Jon.
And finally, everything by @kittykatknits !! I am so, so happy she returned to posting Jonsa this past year but want to give a extra loud shoutout to Race Car Driver Jon and the Most Awesome Sansa Ever in He's Going the Distance !!
(I have a thing for Sports Jon apparently with race car, football and baseball fics listed.)
10. tag your friends so they can play as well!
Tagging @kittykatknits @cellsshapedlikestars @thewolvescalledmehome @winterrose527 and @woodswit and anyone else who wants to do this.
Number of Works still in Progress (started anytime): 77
Mostly wrote in: February (8 works edited, 5 published)
Longest work completed or added to in 2023: The Ruby Falls (179,282)
Shortest work completed or added to in 2023: It's Fashion, Boss (357)
Top Genres: Sci-Fi (13 - just pinching out Fantasy at 12)
Top WIP(s): The Ruby Falls and Young Dagger, False Dream (previously named Alexis Dalliance vs the Evil of Titan)
Top OC(s): Aderyn, Mio (10 fics each)
Below the cut: Review of 2023's Plans, Work I'm proud of, Work that shows I'm still learning, Breakdown of 2023, Plans for 2024, ICYMI
➼ What were my writing plans for 2023?
❌ Post The Ruby Falls Nope. I'm closer, but still no cigar. I've edited 1.75 sections, bringing the total complete-&-almost-ready-to-post sections to 5/15.
✅ Finish stuff Yes! I completed 7 works this year which were started before 2023, the oldest of which was Tales of the Starbound - The Old-Timer's Tale from 2015.
❌ Post more 'For Posterity' items Nope. Forgot + no time + burn out/ no energy
❌ Study Romance? Nope. Forgot this was a goal TBH
❌ Read more Nope. Last year I read 10 books, this year I've only read 5 (not counting fanfics). I did try, but yeah. (My Storygraph if you're interested)
✅ IDK, everything beyond The Ruby Falls is flexible currently. Technically, this one is complete! 😅️
➼ Work I'm most proud of
Home That Our Feet May Leave, But Not Our Hearts (Starbound) This was an experiment in writing a time loop, and also changing tenses through a story. It may not have been 100% perfect, but I feel like I learnt a lot writing it and I'm really happy how it came out.
Greetings After a Long Departure (TESIV:Oblivion) I thought long and hard about how it must feel to touch the statue and gain the Blessing of Akatosh, and I'm pleased that the description really came off as well as it did.
➼ Work that shows I'm still learning
I think maybe I'm stuck in the 'taste vs ability' trough. Aside from the two above, and maybe Two Foxes (TESIV:Oblivion), I feel like there's been some je ne sais quoi missing from my writing this year. I joined Writeblr to learn and grow as a writer, so if anyone has any tips or ConCrit I'd love to hear it. I really don't want to plateau again.
➼ Breakdown of 2023
I traveled a lot this year. Denmark, Albania, Scotland, Denmark again, and off again to Denmark for Christmas. It's for sure been inspiring, but it's also been exhausting and hasn't left me much brain-space for writing. Not to mention that 2nd day of holiday in Scotland I got "bitten by a Haggis", and spent the next 3 months healing a hole in my shin, and I'm still recovering from that. With all the traveling, maybe this year should have been a 'feed the well' year instead of struggling to finish works I didn't have the energy for. Ah well.
That said, I did quite well with my PodFic project. 50 Fics were recorded and ~80 still remain.
➼ What are my writing plans for 2024?
IDK. The future is a foreign country (to paraphrase L. P. Hartley).
Continue hacking away at The Ruby Falls and whatever else catches my fancy.
Eat more red meat/ protein. Can't write if your brain doesn't function.
Figure out what je ne sais quoi missing from my writing.
Pick up abandoned projects. To whit, 'For Posterity' items and Podfics.
2022 End-of-Year Fic Review ✨
Thanks for the tag @cellsshapedlikestars. 💋 Ya’ll know the drill. Answers below the cut.
1. What’s your AO3 account?
GreenHikingBoots. I used to write my Jonsa stories as NorthernLady and my Dramione stories as DakotaDelacour.
2. How many words did you write in total in 2022? AO3 Statistics says about 140,000. But I have 1) an incomplete Dramione multi chapter that was around 40k words before I orphaned it 2) some fics I originally wrote and published in 2021, took down, reworked, and republished in 2022 and 3) a whole lot of words in Google Docs that aren’t ready to be published yet. So, yeah, take that number with a grain of salt. I’ve seen a handful of writers I really enjoy with way higher numbers and it’s a bit tempting to compare and get down on myself. But you know what? If 140,000 words is about right, that’s like two full young adult novels in a year. As a hobby! That I do not get paid for. That’s pretty awesome.
3. How many fics did you publish in 2022 // multi-chapter vs. one-shots?
21. Again, some of these were originally from 2021 but taken down, re-worked, and re-published. I’m not sure how to count the exact breakdown since I have a handful that are two or three parts (so technically multi-chapters) but the word counts are short enough to match some one-shots out there. Generally speaking, I have a lot more one-shots than multi-chapters. I think only one of my fics is longer than 25,000 ish words and more are under like, 6,000 ish. 4. What was your longest-fic // shortest fic? Longest: Inevitable. It’s the outline at about 72k ish words with one chapter left to go. Shortest: About Damn Time. It’s 921 words. That’s a Pretty Name is a close second with 971 words.
5. What was your most popular // least popular? Most Popular: Inevitable, which I think is to be expected because it’s the longest. A Boy in His Cups is my next most popular, the Jonsa one-shot I’ve had up the longest. Least Popular: That’s a Pretty Name
6. What fic didn't perform as well as you thought it would? So Mighty Love + Better Dreams (a two part series that’s about 25,000 words total) was originally part of one of those fic I published as NorthernLady, took down before completing, re-worked, and re-published this year. And the original version was pretty popular and considering it’s mostly the same fic (the major difference being I found a way to end it sooner), it was easy to assume it would perform similarly. But that wasn’t the case at all. I’m guessing people were turned off by the new “Ambiguous/Open Ending” tag? I’m not sure. This series isn’t one of the ones I’m super proud of since it relies heavily on the show plot and I’m more into the books these days. But!! The closing line to Better Dreams is one of the best damn things I’ve ever written and I kinda wish it wasn’t hiding in a fic most people don’t want to read. So there’s that. *shrugs*
7. What fic performed way better than you thought it would? I don’t know about *way* better, but I published Crossing the Threshold around the same time as several other one-shots, and I was surprised to see it beat out the others. I mean, it’s got a cute premise and I was excited to share it, but if I had to rank everything I posted from late September to early November, it probably wouldn’t even make the top half let alone the very top spot. Glad others like it, though.
8. What was your favorite fic you wrote in 2022? Goodness, this is a difficult question. I recently said in another post that A Boy in His Cups is probably the fic I’m most proud of. I’ll stand by that. It’s just got all the elements I love most about Jonsa fanfiction. But Wait and See and Maiden in a Tower are also very near and dear to my heart. I’ve gone back and read those two a handful of times. I try not to care too much about stats (I still care more than I’d like), so I guess what I really like about these three is that they make not caring about stats easy. Like, I love them for the pure fun of writing and would have been pleased with how they turned out even if no one ever saw them. What’s another way of wording it? Many of my other fics are more like an idea that I need to get out of my system so I can move on. Whereas these three fics make me go, “I want to crawl inside this fic and live there!!”
9. What was your favorite fic that somebody else wrote in 2022? Oh my! I’m pretty bad at keeping track of what I’ve read and even worse at remembering titles and who wrote what. Also, I read a lot of stuff after it’s been completed which means just because I read it in 2022 doesn’t mean it was written in 2022. But here are some authors I remember being in my bookmarks at different times throughout the year: thimbleful @justadram_a_dram honey_wheeler @vivilove-jonsa @woodswit @kingsansa @estherruth-jonsatrash @ode-to-an-inkwell @amymel86 Kit_Kat21 caesia @chispas-and-broken-bindings ganymede_elegy (@cellsshapedlikestars) (I try to read and love on other writers I see on Tumblr. Is that obvious by this list?) Also ganymede’s Lounge Act and Mating Game (still in progress) are probably the WIPs I followed most closely. I also have a special place in my heart for her fic The Ghost Inside since I was a beta reader for that. 10. Tag your friends so they can play as well!
Anyone in #9 who hasn’t already been tagged and/or anyone else who wants to play with us!
-x-x-x-x-x- Short descriptions of all my fics mentioned in this post: Inevitable - Modern AU - high school, fake dating trope, best friend’s sister/brother’s best friend That’s a Pretty Name - pre-canon romantic undertones, Sansa lectures Jon about courtesies Crossing the Threshold - Modern AU - high school, drunk confession of feelings About Damn Time - Modern AU - college; Sansa gets a gift from Jon on her birthday A Boy In His Cups - Jon I GoT reimagined; he already knows the truth about his parents Wait and See - Jon struggles to regain his memories after dying and being brought back to life Maiden in a Tower - another pre-canon romantic undertones, a kissing game in the godswood Mighty Love/Better Dreams - seasons 6 and 7 of the show but make it Jonsa
What I sold in 2023
this is the second in a series of posts in which i reflect on my 2023 from a financial perspective, using data from my financial journal.
i sell my secondhand books and clothes and miscellaneous objects online. i'm not a reseller, i do not purchase things to sell them online. this is all just stuff i have laying around the house.
this year i sold 18 books, 8 pieces of clothing and 5 miscellaneous objects. in total, 31 objects left my house AND i earned back 314€. yay!
what was successful
the lesson here is, once again, list everything you can! even stuff you think would never sell! i sold a bag that i wouldn't have paid 1€ for 5€! you never know who is going to scroll past your ad.
also, being on more than one website/app is very important! i am on 3 apps and 1 book-specific website. the most sales came from Vinted, but Vinted doesn't allow to sell everything. my biggest sale (roller skates for 80€) happened on a more local app that's not as well known.
my most successful months were january, october and december, when i sold 5 items each. otherwise, i usually sold 1 or 2 items per month. i don't know why those months in particular were so successful. my guess is that it was a mix of new university books time and gift-giving. i wonder if the pattern will repeat next year as well?
i have finally finished taking pictures of all the clothes i wanted to list. it was such a long process! but i did it!
what didn't work
in the name of being on as many apps as possible, i tried to branch off to Depop. i don't know how it is in other countries, but i only got spam and people trying to get me to click on links. not even 1 real person interacted with me! so i think i'll eliminate my profile and good riddance.
i also ventured on eBay, which is something i've been wanting to try for ages. i only listed 1 item just to see how it worked and it didn't lol. i guess i chose the wrong item and i should try again with something easier to sell. buying something to get a couple of more good reviews would be a good idea as well.
but mostly i need to go on the apps i already use and reupload some of the listings (especially the clothes) to give them more visibility.
plus, there are some listings that i took off for one reason or the other and never put up again because of laziness and that's not conducive to business, let me tell you.
2024 plans
currently, all the things i want to sell are in 2 drawers of my closet. i can't wait to have that space back! so i need to work harder on this payed decluttering.
i'm still proud of myself, because there were times when i thought "why am i doing this? why do i even bother? why don't i just throw everything in the trash and be done with it?" but the numbers speak for themselves, don't you think? and i can finally start to see the light at the end of the tunnel, thank God.
in the new year, i plan to keep experimenting with eBay and consolidate my presence on my current apps. also, i should start taking pictures of my shoes (dread).
🤫 2022 Self Evaluation 😉
Thanks for tagging me @neondiamond :)
Here goes:
1. Number of stories posted to AO3 this year: 3
2. Word count posted for the year: 131,794
3. Fandoms I wrote for: One Direction
4. Pairings: Larry
5. Story with the most:
Kudos: Lost & Found In Oblivion
Bookmarks: Lost & Found In Oblivion
Comments: Lost & Found In Oblivion
6. Work I’m most proud of (and why):
I don't think there's one that I am REALLY proud of... Maybe DDD since I edited it TOO MANY TIMES to count...
7. Work I’m least proud of (and why):
They are all babies, no shaming my babies.
8. Share or describe a favourite review you received:
All the comments from @marchessa and @greenblueish always make my day since they are so heartfelt and long.
9. A time when writing was really, really hard:
Until I hit up @iminthisstanshit I couldn't write a single word. It was so so hard for me to start and FINALLY in March or April, I found the best writting buddy and started from there :) I was in a writer's block for SO LONG UGH!
10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you:
Maybe that changing room scene in MH. Simply because I have always wanted to write changing room sex, especially with a mirror so it turned out nicely.
11. A favourite excerpt of your writing:
UMMMMMMM, alright... I'm gonna go with DDD since I was pretty clever for coming up with this:
“Hungry for knot?”
The alpha’s voice suited his image so well. The deep, borderline sensual octave made Louis shiver. It was laced with timbre and Louis couldn’t remember the last time someone had spoken with a voice like this to him. But wait… Did the alpha just ask him if he was “hungry for knot”?
“Excuse me?” The omega could feel a hot flush underneath his skin. Surely, he was imagining things as he continued to gape wordlessly at the stranger.
The alpha raised a brown paper bag emblazoned with the Burger King logo up to Louis’ eye level. “Says here, I have a delivery for HungryForKnot?” Green, green, green. Startling mossy, earthy grass, iridescent summer green. The beautiful green seemed to be sparkling as they locked with baby blues.
“Are you not HungryForKnot?” The alpha’s tone was definitely teasing now.
“I most certainly am not!” Louis spluttered. His cheeks were positively burning. He had to grip his doorframe to steady himself or else he might keel over in embarrassment.
“Oh.” The alpha lowered the bag, plump lips forming a slight pout. “Then I guess I got the wrong house?” He tilted his head adorably.
12. How did you grow as a writer this year:
DAMN where should I start? First of all, I discovered omega H and now all I wanna write is omega H to the point that I don't read any bottom Lou fics unless they are recced or from my mutuals... There you go, the BIGGEST change. Bottom H is so powerful.
13. How do you hope to grow next year:
Delve into bottom H and be good at it.
14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):
All the people in my dms :)
15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year:
Clothing shop? I would say cuz I'm into vintage clothes now so LAFIO clothing shop was a good idea.
16. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers:
If you only write bottom Lou, you are fucking missing out. Bottom H RULES!!!
17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year:
I have so so so many fics lined up, ready to go and ready to be written. We can only wait til January !!!
18. Tag some writers whose answers you’d like to read.
I think loads of people have been tagged already... Tagging @chai-hat-tea @flexible-racoon @beardyboyzx @cyantific @forthetherapyy @harryslonecurl :))
Dru's 2022 TES Fic Roundup
Quick Stats
Fics added to the WIP pile this year: 20 (that have actually made it to the pile; there're 5ish more bouncing around my brain) Fics completed this year: 13 Fics remaining on the WIP pile: 26 Total W/C this year for TES Fics: 82,465
Fic Popularity
I've measured this as an amalgamation between Tumblr Notes and AO3's Kudos. Most - Per Necessitatem Least - Join between Spiritus Alco Custodiat and Self-Indulgent AU.
Work I'm most proud of
A Restless Pillow (Begets No Rest) - I'm really happy with the flow of conversation and action in both parts of this, particularly:
"[T]here are different tastes I'd like to indulge-" The book hits Rowan hard on the chest.
And
The pestle is forcefully returned to the mortar. "Didn't realise Ferrum was gonna get so territorial."
Work that still shows I'm learning
I'm torn between Strawberry Fizz and Bring the Fire; Brave the Cold.
Strawberry Fizz shows me I'm not good at romance; and I guess this is something I need to decide if I want to develop, or if I'm happy writing mediocre romance in favour of platonic relationships.
Bring the Fire; Brave the Cold has taught me I shouldn't try writing while travelling. I started writing this on the way over to Denmark in Dec 2021, left it alone all the time I was out there, and tried to complete it on the way back, finally finishing it at the end of Jan 2022. I feel like it's disjointed and a bit messy -- coincidentally, a good descriptor for how I am when travelling.
Work I think should have gotten more love
I want to say the Self-Indulgent AU, but I'm fully aware of why it didn't - as it says on the tin, this was for me to indulge a stupid idea I'd had rattling around my brain for too long, and it needed to be out.
If I have to choose, then it's got to be Rowan Hunts. I'm pleased with how Rowan's bastardization arc is going, and I thought that had some quite clever and funny bits.
End of Year Review 2022
In many ways, I feel like this is the year that my practice truly began to take form. In previous years I was wandering, exploring, but aimless and didn’t haven’t any real direction. I knew that I wanted to pursue spirituality and magic with a genuine devotion and purpose, but I mostly I had no idea what for. I knew plenty about how magic and spirit work was done, but my practice was seriously congested by not knowing how it needed to work for me. I also suffered incredibly from apathy and inertia, as I have for the majority of my life. In terms of my craft it meant I couldn’t find anything that enflamed my passions enough for me to pursue it. I was also exhausted by academia which, towards the end, began to ruin my health. This was the context that I began the year with.
2022 had two very distinct halves for me. The first 6 months were the culmination of my final year at university, the last 6 months saw my entry into full time work and Buddhism.
Interestingly, at university I had plenty of time but little energy, while in full time work I now have little time but more energy. University drained me because there was never a point I could truly stop thinking about work, but with my job, once I left the workplace I was done with it for the day. I would say this greatly influenced my receptivity to the teachings of my gods and spirits, to have hours in the day that truly belonged to me.
Following a few quiet months after graduation and then some more to settle into my new job, I started to devotedly pursue Buddhist cultivation, which brought me a sense of stability and certainty that I hadn’t found in other traditions I tried to explore. However I also found that Buddhism was no freer of dogmatism than any other religion, even in its esoteric aspects.
There were solid reasons for its rules, however. One should not attempt to overrule the masters of a living tradition anymore than a layperson should show up at a scientific conference and start preaching to the experts. For me, the strength of Buddhism’s ability to provide a clear cosmology and framework for spiritual cultivation was also its weakness, as there is very little room for discussion on how things can be done on a macro level. The gods, spirits and teachers will liberate you, make you stronger and wiser, help you perform miracles – but they will do so on their terms, not yours*. This can sometimes feel suffocating and greatly stifling to personal self expression.
*To be honest, I see this even in the stories of seasoned practitioners of witchcraft – a path which emphasises personal freedom and subversion of authority. I think in any tradition led by gods and spirits, if you walk far enough, you will inevitably have to start compromising your wishes with their demands, entering pacts and oaths before you attain greater benefits. And sometimes you can find a balance, other times you will not.
Many times, I felt at odds with my teachers because there was a clear hierarchy, and I was both culturally and spiritually obliged to defer to my seniors. This is not an objection to spiritual authority – which plays a necessary niche within the spiritual ecology, even where it is flawed – only a reflection on my aversion to it.
In the midst of all this, a number of my familiars came forward to begin their work with me. They had been with me all my life and were carved from my own psyche, and we began to chip away at the mental obstacles that were keeping me from truly enjoying my life. One of these familiars was a personification of my Intuition.
As I progressed in my cultivation, I began to hear her with greater frequency, assisting me with more detailed and accurate divinations which were verified by my peers. She began to reveal to me a series of visions concerning magical spells, rituals and ingredients. I am still in the beginning stage of following her guidance, as she is very particular about the components of these workings. In tandem, I feel as though that I, on a deep and personal level, cannot or will not perform magic that is not approved by her first. Nonetheless, this is the first time that I feel I am truly pursuing my own brand of magic and it has given me the freedom of self-expression I have been looking for.
Currently, I am still in the meditative stages of acquiring further gnosis to flesh out my practice. I feel encouraged to dip back into Druidry to find more down-to-earth means of cultivation. There were certain Bardic practices that I didn’t enjoy or didn’t have the discipline for previously, but my Voice of Intuition has revealed new ways to engage with them in a way that aligns with my needs. Perhaps, once I follow through with these practices, she may tell me to progress to the Ovate stage. Not because it would teach me any new skills, but to reap the benefits of engaging with a community. I feel like we are playing the long game, planting seeds that will only bear fruit years down the line.
I should also mention that I feel like the Buddhas have been supporting me in the ways that I need, channeling their strength and inspiration according to my own disposition. There will always be issues and friction between human communities for one reason or another, but I can say that I have genuine faith in the gods of the Buddhist pantheon. There is no doubt in my mind that I am safe in their refuge, and that my cultivation is in good hands.
