Lemon Frozen Yoghurt

After spending a week in the French Capital of Lemons --and not a day went by without each of us having something lemon-y, from fresh citronnade to desserts, cocktails and the complimentary (often generous!) glass of Limoncello we were brought as digestif after dinner!-- we returned with our suitcase full of Citron de Menton delicacies. Notably, a delicious Lemon Marmalade, delightfully sharp, with that hint of sweetness characteristic of the Menton lemon, and very little sugar; absolutely delectable on morning toasts. It also makes a delightfully refreshing Lemon Frozen Yoghurt! Happy Thursday!

Ingredients (serves 2):

1 cup thick Greek Yoghurt

1 heaped tablespoon Menton Lemon Marmalade (Confiture de Citron de Menton)

2 teaspoons Limoncello

In a small bowl, spoon Greek Yoghurt and Lemon Marmalade. Give a good, energetic stir until well-combined. Gradually stir in Limoncello, mixing well.

Place bowl in the freezer, at least a couple of hours for a soft-serve sort of texture, longer if you want firmer scoops.

Serve Lemon Frozen Yoghurt with Lavender and Vanilla Biscuits.

As someone with ADHD/ who struggles with depression, I often lose the fight to eat healthy and resign to eating microwave chicken nuggets

BUT

Smoothies! I am on such a smoothie kick! they are sweet and delicious and easily pre-prepped! I can buy the fresh fruit, divide it up into jars, stick it in the freezer and not have to worry about it going bad! it is wonderful. I have even started immediately pouring the excess smoothie from the blender in ice trays so that I can have an infinite smoothie. If you get the hang of them, they're pretty much one texture always, and are easy to fix up and alter as needed.

I also work at a coffeeshop so I have all I can eat of free overripe bananas, which are terrible for eating as is but are sweet and freeze quite wonderfully. Forget banana bread, make a smoooooothie.

Mango slaps. Any fruit that you think is gonna go bad before you eat it can always be washed, chopped, and added to the freezer.

Weird as hell things I've tried recently and have worked for smoothies:

spinach (as long as it's less than 1/4 of the total fruit/vegg mix and paired with an overpowering fruit

a Raw egg! No joke, if you whisk the egg with a fork with about a table spoon of Lemon Juice or white wine vinegar, the acid pasteurizes it and chemically cooks the egg, making it completely safe to add to the smoothie. I recommend lemon juice and I promise it won't taste like anything. Egg whites are what they make meringue out of! It's good protein.

Vitamins! Egg shells (as long as they've been baked) and ground very very fine make a really good calcium powder. Use sparingly and blend extra well. If you don't want to go to the trouble, you can always dissolve some daily vitamin pills in warm water and toss that mixture into the smoothie. It's a really easy way to ensure you're taking your vitamins!

unsalted butter or heavy cream are all really good options for adding a thicker mouthfeel without changing the flavor. A dash of olive oil does the same thing! Don't be afraid to experiment.

BIG fan of honey and cocoa powder, especially in a mostly banana smoothie. Matcha powder is also really good.

AVOCADO!!! also any squash like pumpkin Would NOT recommend zucchini unfortunately

Homemade sodas and sweet drinks are incredibly common based on home recipes passed down through the generations.

In Fallout new Vegas, and in Fallout 4 you can make drinks such as Nuka-Cola.

Filtering water and making it drinkable will be a big priority wherever you go. But making it palatable will also be a big goal.

Local settlements will probably mix sweeteners like syrup, juices, or even honey to mix it in the water.

Tea will be very popular too with all kinds of local teas made from local plants, sweetened with local sweeteners, and traded or even sold to each other.

Tea has the advantage of being boiled, filtered, and flavored making it a popular drink with massive variants between region to region and even settlement to settlement.

Brahmin milk will have a lot of nutrients and apparently good for treating radiation so odds are its also used as a medicine and a big part of a lot of diets.

Some rare drinks may still be possible but take a lot of work such as coffee, and ice cream.

Coffee needs specific growth and a lot of space to grow. So maybe it'll grow in small quantities.

There's ways to make ice cream without machines but it takes a lot of salt, ice, and milk. So you'd have to be very wealthy or very well located to have it

Shaved ice with simple syrups and fruits may make good treats in areas where there's a lot of ice

I fully agree with all of this! Not including it was probably a bit of an oversight on my part, but this is exactly the kind of extrapolation and worldbuilding I was aiming for.

Soda was invented in the mid 1800s, so I don't think it's beyond the realm of possibility for people to have reinvented soft drinks. Originally, the water was taken from springs that were naturally carbonated and today, we can do it at home with compressed CO2. Even if the drinks aren't carbonated, I totally believe and agree with the idea that they're making sweet drinks.

I was going to mention in the original post and forgot, but lemons? Those things totally still exist. Citrus is too much of a botanical freak not to have survived. It might not be lemons (or limes, or oranges) as we know them, but they are OUT THERE and that means lemonade is real.

Tea is canon within the realm of fallout because you can brew several different varieties in 76. Also, hot drinks are comforting, especially in the winter and I think it's totally reasonable to think that new brews have popped up with the addition Coffee grows in Mexico at a similar latitude to Florida and parts of the southern united states, so I think you could claim that certain strains have been cultivated and grown in those areas, though it might be rare and extremely expensive.

Making ice cream is a pretty popular thing for kids to do -- put some rock salt and ice in a bag with cream, sugar, and vanilla, and shake it until it freezes. On the coast, salt is probably pretty abundant, even if it's time consuming to harvest, but vanilla is probably one spice that nobody has access to in the wasteland.

Ice houses and cold cellars are probably pretty common in the wasteland, so ice could be available all year round. Plus, refrigeration is useful in the process of preserving foods rather than canning or bottling.

I think it's important to keep in mind that people are smart, and just because the bombs dropped, we didn't revert back to the stone age. The knowledge of canning, bottling, making jams and preserves, cold storage, curing meat, making cheese -- all that knowledge is old. Just because modern technology makes it easier doesn't mean people couldn't do it two hundred years ago. If the knowledge is lost, logic and human ingenuity will rediscover it eventually.

Llet merengada is one of the three most popular summer drinks in the Catalan Countries, after orxata and granissat. It's a cold drink made of sugared milk aromatized with lemon and cinnamon.

You can buy it in any ice cream shop (gelateria) or orxateria, but it's also easy to make at home, so here's the recipe!

Ingredients:

500 ml of milk

1 lemon's peel

1 cinnamon stick

75 g (=5 spoonfuls) of sugar (you can use more or less, depending on how sweet you like it)

2 egg whites

Cinnamon powder

Preparation:

Pour the milk in a pot at medium heat, add sugar, the cinnamon stick and the lemon peel (try to use only the yellow part, leaving out the white part, because the white is sour).

Before it starts boiling, move the pot out of the heat and let it infuse and cool down for at least 15 minutes.

Strain the milk through a sieve and cool it in the fridge.

If you want the simplified version, skip to step number 5. To follow the full recipe, once the milk is completely cold, freeze it. In order to obtain the desired texture, once it starts crystallizing, quickly blend it in the blender, then repeat this same process at least twice with an interval of about 2 hours.

Beat the egg whites to stiff peaks, then add two spoonfulls of sugar. (To be able to do this well, the eggs should be at room temperature).

Add the egg whites to the icy milk and sprinkle cinnamon powder on top. Serve it immediately. When you drink it, it should be cold, and it's alright if there's a little bit of frozen pieces (shaved-ice style) floating around but it shouldn't be frozen.

Variations: you do other flavours. You can add a few drops of coffee or change the cinnamon and lemon for others like orange and clove or cardamom and ginger.

Coffee varies in popularity among the Provinces, but almost everyone enjoys a good strong cup of bean juice (and it tastes much better than stamina potions)!

Altmer

Coffee isn't the favoured drink of most High Elves, but it is enjoyed in small amounts around Summerset. The most popular way of drinking coffee there is a simple espresso, served in small cups for sipping alongside small cakes and biscuits in the afternoon. While some complain that espresso is too strong and bitter for their tastes, a good brew is smooth, rich, and flavourful, with notes of vanilla and fruits.

Argonians

Black Marsh is one of Tamriel's foremost producers of coffee due to the rich soil and warm climate that makes growing coffee relatively easy compared to other Provinces. Egg coffee sounds bizarre, but this Argonian take on the cappuccino is one of the best ways to drink coffee in my opinion! A strong brew, sweetened with sugar, is topped with firm, whipped sweetened egg whites and served piping hot. Simply stir the egg into the coffee before it has time to set, and you have all the benefits of a milky coffee without the milk.

Bosmer

Believe it or not, the Bosmer have found a way to make delicious coffee that's Green Pact compliant! While it sounds unsavoury, Wood Elves in Valenwood pick out undigested coffee beans from the dung of civet cats, who eat wild coffee fruits. The beans are washed thoroughly and roasted, with the civet cat's digestive system purportedly aiding in the fermentation of the bean, giving the resulting brew a rich and robust flavour. This 'luwak' coffee has become so famous that it's become a pricey export to other parts of Tamriel.

Bretons

Cream and coffee go hand in hand in High Rock, generally with a couple of sugar cubes or flavoured syrups or caramel for a rich beverage. Using cream instead of milk helps to ease the bitterness of Breton coffee, which is unfortunately made by boiling coffee grounds. As any coffee aficionado knows, boiling your coffee makes it rather sour and unpleasant, making the cream and syrups a must.

Dunmer

Of the races, the Dark Elves are probably the least enthusiastic about coffee as it is not native to Morrowind. However, coffee culture from around Tamriel has made the beverage more popular among the younger generations of urban Dunmer, who infuse their beans with marshmerrow during the roasting process. Served black in tall cups with a pinch of marshmerrow sugar, this simple drink is unique in flavour due to its sweet, candy-like aroma. For those with a taste for the exotic, add a splash of guar milk.

Imperials

In Cyrodiil, coffee is usually drunk with milk. Cappuccinos, made by topping coffee with frothed steamed milk are particularly popular, not least due to the fancy art that can be made by pouring the coffee into the milk in intricate patterns. While in itself it's not a particularly remarkable beverage, it's an Imperial staple that's enjoyed from the Colovian Highlands to Blackwood by young and old.

Khajiit

The Khajiit are famous for their drip coffees, in which coffee grounds are placed in small metal filters that slowly drip into a small cup, halfway filled with moon sugar-sweetened condensed milk. The resulting brew is very strong, very sweet, and bound to wake you up after the first sip.

Nords

Coffee is not particularly popular in Skyrim, but it's served as plainly as it gets: strong and black, and sometimes with a spoonful of sugar. However, what it's served with is unique to the Province. Coffee cheese, which is a slightly chewy and porous cheese, is dipped into the coffee and nibbled on as you sip your brew. I know it sounds weird, but give it a try and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Orcs

Orcish coffee is always served with copious amounts of sugar and echatere milk. This simple drink is especially favoured by Wrothgarian echatere herders, who keep their energy levels up by sipping on this beverage throughout the day from echatere-skin flasks.

Redguards

Coffee is widely grown in the Bantha, making the drink a native Hammerfell staple. Whether it's served black, with sugar, or goat milk, coffee is often infused with spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and even chili. Another popular way of drinking coffee the Redguard way is the amusingly-named 'dirty chai': a strong double espresso mixed with equal amounts of spicy chai and frothy goat milk, and served with sweet pastries and biscuits as an accompaniment.
