Right, so originally I didn't even start re-watching this video bc of James Somerton but bc I wanted to watch the iilluminaughtii part of it again (she's still making videos btw. the comments are turned off). I actually remember seeing the thumbnail for them *a lot* on my recommended but I clicked on one once and didn't even make it to the end because well. It did feel like she was reading me the newspaper lol. I really hate that kind of monotone voice so many Youtubers use now, like they're reciting you the information at the back of a cereal box. It's the auditory equivalent of watching paint dry to me.

I hate it when [morbid special interest] comes up in conversation because there are so many misconceptions surrounding it and I always want to correct people but it's such a weird thing to be so knowledgeable about 💀

wait i'm curious what you mean about the dogs series being propagandistic? :0 i watched the series aages ago and i can't remember it being like that . gonna have to rewatch ahha
Propagandistic is not the correct word. Exploitative is what I should have said. I haven't watched episode 1 since November 2018 when it came out and I don't intend to rewatch but this is what I wrote about it at the time:
Well it's set up from the get go to manipulate. The music, the slow pacing, the select pieces of audio you hear from each person. I felt some of the situations were probably completely fake or set up, like some of the groaning, the sister getting agitated and leaving. These could have been real, but they also were done juuuust right. It's all intense close ups all the time, very narrow depth of field which is a stylistic choice specifically to tug the emotions. Also I felt there was no actual story to the episode. What happened? The girl has epilepsy, she got a dog – end of story. They didn't really go anywhere with it.
As an aside, I was very weirded out by the service dog trainers. Why did they have a group therapy session as an opener? Do you seriously have to go there and say into a microphone your name and your disability? And "protect the bond"???
Actually thinking on it more the story thing really bothers me. There was no resolution. We didn’t find out if the service dog did anything. We didn’t find out of the sister felt OK. We didn’t find out if the girl felt better. There was nothing at all really. It's almost what I would consider inspiration/disability porn.
Now, I know it's the nature of documentary to be exploitative and to use film techniques to heighten drama. I get it, but I also hate it. I’m only OK with it in certain circumstances. I both love documentary and also hate the way most documentaries are edited. The child featured had no way to consent to this.
The dog grooming episode used the same techniques but that’s totally different – the stakes are lower. And to use the melodrama around the Japanese women and their dogs, or the grooming competition – that worked. It heightened drama from a small thing in an entertaining way. The technique also worked better on the Territorio de Zaguates episode because it’s the point of documentary to look at these things, the questionable conditions of the dogs and the decisions made by the sanctuary. I will say though, again this episode was very shallow and did not give much detail about the situation at all nor really explore the difficult parts of the story.
Overall the cinematic quality of the documentary series Dogs is good, but the content is generally quite shallow at best and potentially harmful at worst. I have watched half of it, but I can only stomach so much in one go. I may get the to rest of it one day.
