Definitely likely changing the way that this is set to have it be a character list like the other BFCD Masterlists, but for today, this all I got for the girlies. To be fair, it might need to be like the Monsters ones. Or, I might do a separate one that's characters later. Idk.

LGBTQ+ Disabled Characters Showdown Round 1, Wave 4, Poll 9
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A character being totally canon LGBTQ+ and disabled was not required to be in this competition. Please check qualifications and propaganda before asking why a character is included.
Check out the other polls in this wave and prior here.
Julian Bashir-Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Qualifications:
Disability: Along with being generally awkward with conversation and not knowing how to talk to people, a part of his backstory is that he was “underperforming” in school so his parents got him illegally genetically enhanced to “fix” him (in the show this is treated as a horrible fucked-up thing that they did LGBTQ+: He has a relationship with another male character on the show that everybody behind-the-scenes (except the homophobic producer) treated as canonically romantic. The homophobic producer had to tell the writers to stop putting Bashir and Garak in scenes together because they got along too well and he didn’t want the audience to think they were a couple. The non-homophobic producer said in a documentary looking back on DS9 that one of his biggest regrets about the show is not making the relationship actually canon.
He was canonically intellectually disabled as a child, which his parents attempted to "correct" with illegal gene editing. This eliminated his intellectual disability, but he displays many many autistic traits still (socially awkward, infodumps, hyperempathetic, echolalia, blunt). This lends itself to the popular interpretation that the gene editing couldn't "correct" his autism, but it did change exactly which autistic traits he had. One of his closest onscreen relationships is with Elim Garak, a relationship that both actors have since said is romantic in nature, and Andy Robinson (Garak's actor) has explicitly said he played Garak as being attracted to Bashir. There is also some possible evidence of Julian being trans; in one episode, he says this of a situation in which he had to transfer a fetus from one of his friends into another due to an emergency (paraphrased): "The fetus was in distress, and the only available candidates were Major Kira... and me." This line potentially implies he is capable of carrying a fetus. Furthermore, he canonically has a name that his parents used to call him that he refuses to answer to now (Jules). In-universe, this is due to him finding out about his genetic engineering, but it is very transgender of him.
Propaganda:
He uses all of his free time to role play historical events with his best friend - He intentionally got one question wrong on his finals so that he wouldn’t be valedictorian - On like 5 separate occasions he gets invited to medical conferences then kidnapped on the way - Season 2 episode 22 “The Wire”
He is so awesome. Very autistic, very interesting character. He's an extremely caring doctor, to the point he once stayed on a plague-ridden planet with no futuristic tech, mixing medicine by hand for weeks in an attempt to cure the populace. Which he succeeds at, by the way!! He also, after finding a rogue group of former enemy soldiers who have managed to kick their dependence on the drug used by the enemy government to control them, Julian agrees to try to formulate a way for all of the soldiers to be free of their dependence. He only fails due to interference. Also, when Garak is suffering withdrawal from a brain implant, he stays by his bedside for days on end, caring for him, and even going to the heart of hostile territory to ask the head of the Space KGB how he can cure him. And that's not all! In addition to being a very dedicated (if often unethical) doctor, he is also a space tennis player! He has a tendency to put his foot in his mouth immediately upon meeting anyone new, and not just because of his canonical foot fetish! I'm not joking about that. It is canon.
The qualifications and propaganda paragraphs correspond, @convenient-plot-device is the second submitter.
Frankie Stein-Monster High
Qualifications:
Frankie has always had detachable limbs, that sometimes are useful and other times bothersome. Frankie has also often been hcd as some kind of queer. In G3 of Monster High, they now additionally to their detachable limbs, have a prosthetic leg. And Frankie is now canonically nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. As well as apparently having something romantic going on with Cleo (idk i don't keep up with the cartoon) (but any relationship would be queer for them, as they are nb, lol)
Propaganda:
I love Frankie. I love Monster High. I have loved it since G1. And I do like a lot of the changes (although very much not all) that they made with G3. Especially Frankie. Having them be femme presenting nb is awesome. And also having a prosthetic leg!! I love this

Group C, Round 2, Poll 4:
Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut
Kai Winn
politician/religious leader who among other things orchestrated an assassination of a competitor and worked with the guy who colonized her planet to release her gods' evil counterparts
Vriska Serket
It’s Vriska baby!
it's vriska
not only manipulates people the traditional way but also literally has mind control powers.
she manipulates her disabled friend constantly and is the reason why hes disabled in the first place. she is constantly telling lies and half truths to make sure she has all the cards in every possible situation. she does basically everything by herself and turns on others if they dont follow her lead and dies multiple times in her struggle for the spotlight, her one true goal. she has an eyepatch and a robot arm. she gets all the women. ALL OF THEM!!!!!!!!
shes girlbosses her way into SOOOOOOOO MANY other competitions AND WON!!!!!!!! and like okay yea, she mostly won bc some of them were rigged but also shes just like that lol shes got a whole lotta lucky 8r8ks >:::;)

STAR TREK MASTERPOST
hi my name is liz and i'm watching the entirety of star trek in release order, so this post was SIGH inevitable. i will edit with updates it as i make more
FANFIC
Gambler's Knife - AOS, Spirk, 22k. Twelve years after Tarsus IV and three months after dying to realign the warp core and save his ship, Jim Kirk seems to have a new lease on life: he's been resurrected, started pursuing a tentative new relationship with Spock, and has an entire five-year mission ahead of him. That is, until the attempted murder of an old friend forces him to divert the Enterprise away from her intended course and towards Planet Q. After a chance encounter on the planet's surface, new secrets about Jim's time on Tarsus IV come to light—secrets that threaten to destroy everyone he fought to protect, and the new life he's finally achieved. Some things you carry with you wherever you go.
SKIP/WATCH LIST
as i watch star trek, i am making an incredibly detailed spreadsheet which aims to guide new people into what to watch...or what not to watch. this list includes every single movie and tv series (including the animated ones), multiple watch orders (release order vs chronological order), runtimes, content warnings, and indicators on which characters feature in which episodes + indicators on which episodes are important for continuity. the only catch is i am updating it as i go, so it's a verrry slow work in progress. i've also still got a few blanks in the tos bit.
currently the only tumblr post with a link is this one, but i'll make a better post once i've finished going back and filling in the blanks on the tos section.
SPOCKANALIA DIGITIZATION
@maulthots and i are working on digitizing all 5 volumes of SPOCKANALIA - retyping text, cleaning up images, and adding alt text. they'll be added here as we complete them.
Volume 1
EPISODE REWRITES
sometimes star trek makes me crazy and i wanna fix it, but i don't have the time or patience to rewrite it in fic form so we get tumblr posts instead. they are in the order that i did them. right now there are only a few but i want to do like a thousand

I just watched Deep Space Nine’s season 2 episode, Paradise. There really are some ways where Janeway and Sisko are alike, their response to Alixus’cult community would be similar but I feel like Janeway would be a hell of a lot angrier. Alixus is the exact opposite of Janeway, that clash of wills would have burned a lot hotter, IMO. (Red head vs stubborn red head with charisma).
Janeway would hate just giving up technology, hell she would hate even the idea of giving up. It’s anathema to Janeway. She was almost in the same position where she was stranded in a planet with Chakotay with no possibility of return. But Janeway just stubbornly worked to find a cure.
Also, I felt that community cult were too forgiving of Alixus.
If she wanted to start her own amish community, she could have had asked for volunteers and not strand people who had no idea what they were signing up for.

TREKMATCH! # 802 - DS9's "Broken Link" vs 1965's The Battle of Algiers
THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS aka LA BATTAGLIA DI ALGERI aka MA'RAKAT AL-JAZĀ'IR (Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, lost to A Man and a Woman)
The French are being real jerks and oppressing the Algerian people they've invaded so some average Algerian Joes decide to fight back using non-traditional methods. Well sure the people in power don't like those methods but Algeria liberated itself with em (spoilers)!
GRADE: B+
STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE - "Broken Link"
Odo starts to get real sick so they take him to the Founders' Planet so he can go on a surprise trial. Meanwhile Garak attempts genocide and gets six months in space jail. Seems like a light sentence?
GRADE: C+
Victory to Algiers, so things are tied up 401-401!
That's it for Deep Space Nine, which goes a disappointing 82-82 against movies, breaking even!

Living on Deep Space Nine means not seeing your on-world or spacefaring friends and relatives grow and change.
You leave for a week, a month, a year at a time, and you come back and there are new stories, someone is married, there’s wrinkles around your father’s eyes, your sister’s room is spattered with unfamiliar pillows, the mountain moba trees blossomed while you were away, salam grass spread to the west pasture, the old pet died, there’s a replicator in the kitchen now, the temple has a new Vedek and they finished the series on Horran’s prophecies, your old prayer group is going through Zocal’s third, a mature confidence has usurped the anxiety in your cousin, her stride longer than you remember, the rock arrangement you made as a child finally succumbed to the wind, and when did it happen? When did it all happen?

More Stewjon GG
Context: post one, post two Helped along by @atagotiak, @kestrel-cat
I just love the idea that, for various reasons relating to Qui-Gon's recovery period, Anakin still ends up as Obi-Wan's padawan but it's like. They do their jobs, technically. Anakin gets good grades. They don't start any wars.
But.
"We're working with Skywalker and Kenobi." "Oh hells."
Hey, another idea: they have enough money to free Shimi because Anakin fixes the broken hyperdrive so they don’t need a new one to get off-planet now.
Padmé and Handmaidens: That’s wonderful. But. We’re traveling with a hyperdrive built by a nine-year-old. Is this safe? Qui-Gon, who spent the last decade with a spark and who’s not getting too many warnings from the Force: It’ll be fine. Don’t worry about it.
(Ten years later, Padme cites Anakin's "passion for learning" as one of the things she loves about him.)
Obi-Wan: My focus is biology. His is mechanics. Now we just need a chemistry spark and we'll be unstoppable! Qui-Gon: And that would be a bad thing that we should not be aspiring to, right? Obi-Wan: ... Qui-Gon: Right, Padawan? Obi-Wan: Yes, Master. That would be... bad... and is not something to aspire to.
There's a heavily-fortified lab space in the temple for Spark Jedi.
At one point a particularly annoying Initiate (let's go with Bruck) whines and asks why Obi-Wan gets a Personal Lab.
And it's like "Do You Know Why The Entire Stewjon System Is Under Lockdown, Child???"
I just... god, I really like the idea of some Initiates/Padawans getting jealous of Obi-Wan having a private laboratory and then it's just like "Okay, here's a slideshow about Stewjon. Do you see this shit? Obi-Wan having a private lab is a SAFETY MEASURE."
"Why can't I borrow Obi-Wan's lab? He's not even going to be on planet for the next year!" "Remember that presentation about Stewjoni sparks that I've made you sit through eight fucking times?"
You don’t want to be in the same lab as him when he decides that the Vulptex from Crait would be so much better if they had poisonous fur-crystals.
Tumblr media
Much like Obi-Wan frantically taking college-level mechanics courses to keep up with baby Anakin in many fics, Qui-Gon takes extensive biology and medical courses that had previously been outside his wheelhouse.
He's up to date on his zoology and botany and animal husbandry and veterinary studies, thank goodness. He understands what you need to take care of many animals and breed plants and stuff. But anything beyond like, a how to fix a broken bone or whatever is probably beyond him. And that was fine! He’s not a vet!
BUT
Qui-Gon's just like "Well, at least I have SOME basic understanding of the topic, time to learn enough that I can keep my padawan from doing something excruciatingly stupid in the middle of a fugue."
Sparkykin vs battle droids will definitely result in several "I could do better than that when I was nine and working with literal SCRAP!"
[Cue angry mutterings while wrist-deep in a battle droid]
Coruscant year/day length matches Stewjon because a spark from thousands of years ago thought it would be more sensible if they matched the galactic standard. Or they decided they were going to make Coruscant match them.
Hey, so. If things go similar enough that Palps tries to get to Anakin through Padmé pregnancy visions and stuff. Gosh, having a mad biologist on hand sure is handy, eh? Even if Anakin is unsure what it means for his own future with the order he’s pretty sure Obi-Wan could help here. Could turn into mpreg Anakin. Could turn into Tubes. Many options!
Dooku… did get Qui-Gon updates on Obi-Wan after he left the order but did not know about the sparkiness for whatever reason. Maybe Qui mentioned he’s a bright, good-natured child who’s saberwork is promising and he’s into science but didn’t mention how into science.
Dooku goes to torture Obi-Wan at Geonosis but WHOOPS that lovely young man just broke restraints and is LECTURING YOU on the efficacy of your torture devices, really, the soldering is just dreadful.
Canon Obi doesn’t have much spark energy, but that brainworm scene, man, so sparky. Also he’s not great at the whole self-preservation thing.
One friend (@creepingthroughthistidalwave) commented on my “What’s a Spark” post with “laying it out like that really makes the Spark-DarkSide connection and the tone difference between the settings clear” which... yeah.
That's why Qui-Gon's "He's a sparky Force-Sensitive you really wanna leave him unsupervised?" argument works so well.
The spark is less morality destroying than the dark side. But... there’s def some parallels there. That said, the less morality destroying has to take into account you don't really get a choice in the spark. The dark side is a choice, the spark is a neurotype, it’s just a neurotype that makes it a lot easier to Fall to the dark, the way something like ADHD can make it easier to suffer from addiction.
Force sensitive sparks probably do have a higher rate of falling than average just because forbidden knowledge and all that, too. Not that it matters for this specific case.
Spark nature also has going in and out of tunnel vision mode built in. Darkside is much less cyclical, months or years at a time instead of a few hours of hyperfocus.
You can def get a darkside fugue but it’s still. Different. Though a sparky darkside fugue is a terrifying prospect to consider. I feel like there's been at least a few Dark Spark Force-Users and that's why the Council folds as quickly as possible.
Anyway, Anakin and Obi-Wan with the fucking... The vibe from that one panel.

Old Trek vs. New Trek
Many discussions revolve around the topic how “New Trek“ like Picard, Discovery and other shows destroy Gene Roddenberry’s vision of Star Trek. According to the group of fans who only see the “old Trek“ as real Trek, new shows are too “woke“ or not interesting enough with long story arcs instead of new stories in each episode like in TNG. Strangely enough these groups who claim that for example “Discovery” is too boring on the other hand complain about Discovery’s crew constantly being engaged in battles. In their opinion the main aim of Starfleet was to research space. But the research on board of the Discovery, mainly their alternative propulsion system (the “Spore Drive“) , is dismissed and regarded as illogical. But how different is new Trek really?
1) New Trek is too “woke“
In Star Trek “Discovery” we have an openly gay couple. Yes it is the first openly gay couple on Star Trek. Their relationship is interwoven into the story without being pushy. There are the occasional “personal“ scenes but these are very decent, mostly just showing deep conversations between the couple or the occasional kiss.
On the other hand we had Jadzia Dax in “Deep Space Nine”. Although the situation with Jadzia was a bit different, we had an entire episode focusing on Jadzia’s feelings for her symbionts‘ former host’s wife. We saw them kissing and admitting their feelings for each other. Also we had a lot of scenes in “Deep Space Nine” that implied certain sexual activities between characters for example Worf and Jadzia or Quark and Grilka being in sickbay after spending the night together. Or Quark getting his ears massaged which is a kind of sexual stimulation.
Another topic which seems to be a problem for some people is the non-binary character Adira Tal. Adira is a human with a Trill-symbiont, who does not feel comfortable with being seen and referred to as a certain gender. In this case I must refer to Jadzia again. Jadzia is also a trill. She shares memories and experiences with her symbiont’s former hosts. While she sees herself as a female she doesn’t sees herself as a single being. She is the product of all those personalities, experiences and memories. She once has been mother and father, as she says herself . Therefore she acknowledges that there is also a male part in her. And in “The Next Generation“ Data let Lal, his “daughter“, chose her gender instead of making the decision for her.
2) “New Trek“ with its story arcs is boring
Fans of the old shows continue to claim that the new shows are boring. As one of the reasons they mention the long story arcs the newer shows use. In their opinion it is more interesting to have each episode a new story and also new planets and species. That is Trek supposed to be in their eyes. But “Discovery” and “Picard” aren’t the only and definitely not the first shows to use long story arcs. Here I have to mention again the great show ”Deep Space Nine“. Not only do we have a multi-season storyline. No, the show finale consists of a number of episodes, each of them ending with a cliffhanger and obviously building one large finale.
3) The crew of Discovery is engaged in too many battles while the other series concentrate more on exploring new worlds and making contact with unknown species
The Discovery is originally a science vessel. They work on an alternative propulsion system, the “spore drive“. But certain events pull the ship and its crew into fights like for example the war with the Klingons or the battles with Control or the Emerald Chain. This is not unfamiliar to those watching other series in the Franchise. The crew of the Enterprise is numerous times involved in such situations. Some times their ship is under attack other times they find themselves in hostile situations on the planets they are currently exploring. And “Deep Space Nine“ has multiple seasons dealing with the war against the Dominion or other tight situations.
4)The different appearance of the Klingons
The Klingons in Star Trek “Discovery” look very different from the ones in the other series. That is a fact to admit. On the other hand the Klingons in “Deep Space Nine“ and “The Next Generation“ look also different from the ones in “The original series“. This difference is explained to be caused by genetic experiments and a viral pandemic. But while this explanation (and the different look) is canonically accepted, the change of appearance in “Discovery“ is not. Although it could also be the result of genetic research or simple genetic mutation and evolution. But unfortunately it isn’t explained so far.
5) Too much focus on emotions and mental health issues in “New Trek“
Yes the new shows put a lot of focus on the topic of mental health. It seems as if wider parts of society (and those responsible for these shows) finally understand the importance to end the stigma surrounding these issues. But emotions and mental health topics on star Trek are far from new. In “The Next Generation“ Enterprise has their own ships counselor. There are numerous episodes dealing with mental health topics or at least putting some emphasis on them, like “Hollow pursuits“, “Tin man“ and to some degree “The survivors“. Or the episodes “The child“ and “The offspring“ which are highly emotional, focussing on loss and grief. And in “Deep Space Nine“ we have Nog struggling with PTSD, the O’Briens overcoming a lot of mentally draining situations, Gul Dukat grieving for his daughter among other things.
6) A computer as a sentinent being is too far fetched
In “Discovery” the ship’s computer develops a consciousness and calls herself Zora. Zora is able to make her own decisions and to experience emotions. Eventually she is declared a sentinent lifeform. While some people scoff about the story development, claiming that a sentinent computer would be illogical, they clearly forget about Data in “The Next Generation”. Data is an Android, a constructed machine, which looks similar to a human. In the course of the show Data shows signs of emotions, although he isn’t even aware of it himself and expresses his regret about his lack of emotions and him not being human multiple times. In the episode “The Measure of a man” Data is also declared a sentinent lifeform. Which consequently counts for his later created daughter Lal, who is able to feel emotions more strongly due to some system failures, too.
I think this little comparison shows clearly, that lot of topics which lead now to complains have already been covered in the “old” shows. I am not telling you to like “New Trek“. I am only asking you to accept that it exist and to respect that other people like it. Everybody has an individual taste and their own opinions. How boring would the world be if we all liked the same things? And isn’t Star Trek about “infinite diversity in infinite combinations“? That should be true for the fandom, too.

mechanisms basics & lore
welcome to my updated mechanisms intro post! this post will cover both the topics discussed in my mechanisms basics post, which is geared towards people who don’t know what the mechanisms are, and my deep lore post, which aimed to be a comprehensive compilation of all the important character and world lore. this post should serve the above group, but it’s geared towards people who have listened but feel there’s a lot of lore that seems to be common knowledge they’re missing. we’ll start out with a basic introduction, and then go into crew lore and a semi-comprehensive guide on where to go for further information.
basics
the mechanisms were a steampunk concept band, known for their queer representation and their tragic stories. they are no longer together, their last performance being january 2020, but several of their members are still creating related spinoff content.
they follow the trope many steampunk bands do, which is albums that tell a story; think similar to listening to a musical soundtrack, but geared to a visual-less experience. what distinguishes them is 1) narration tracks between each song, making the plot very easy to follow, and 2) being meant to be watched live, meaning there’s layers of meta that are more easily understood by watching recorded gigs rather than studio recordings of albums. specifically, there’s a focus on the narrators, known as the mechanisms or the crew of the aurora, who are immortal space pirates telling the stories and occasionally inserting themselves into them. though they are tragic figures themselves, their banter serves the purpose of bringing a lightheartedness and dark humor to the stories. if there’s an aspect of the lore you’re confused on, it’s probably related to the narrators!
to watch the mechanisms live, you can find recordings on youtube, dropbox, google drive, soundcloud, or vimeo, which are all compiled in this post (including transcripts!). if visuals aren’t your thing, i’ve linked the studio recordings later on in this post when they come up, and here are the mechanisms’ official spotify, bandcamp, and youtube, as well as an unofficial comprehensive lyric videos channel.
the albums
regarding the albums specifically, there are 4 main ones (once upon a time (in space), ulysses dies at dawn, high noon over camelot, and the bifrost incident), 2 that are compilations of miscellaneous songs (tales to be told 1 & 2), 1 single (frankenstein), and 1 album that’s a high-quality recording of their last live show, including an alternative performance of the bifrost incident, 2 songs only performed at live shows, and 'the deathsong’, which details how they all eventually die (death to the mechanisms).
as you might have been able to tell from the titles, they’re all based off of various myths, folklore, literature, and/or fairy tales, using different genres on top of a sci-fi setting to add a fresh twist to them! for example, high noon over camelot is a western based on arthurian mythos, set on a space station. (the albums are known for all ending in tragedy, so be careful if that isn’t your cup of tea!) if your goal is to get into the mechanisms, i’d suggest sitting down and listening to them all in full; links will be provided below, or alternatively you can watch once upon a time (in space) live here, ulysses dies at dawn live here, or the bifrost incident live here. (there is no full live recording with visuals of high noon over camelot, sadly, but there are partial and audio only recordings.)
once upon a time (in space) - spotify/bandcamp/youtube
ulysses dies at dawn - spotify/bandcamp/youtube
high noon over camelot - spotify/bandcamp/youtube
the bifrost incident - spotify/bandcamp/youtube
tales to be told, volume 1 -  spotify/bandcamp/youtube
tales to be told, volume 2 - spotify/bandcamp/youtube
frankenstein - spotify/bandcamp/youtube
death to the mechanisms - edited video with the stream corruption fixed + subtitles / stream / spotify / bandcamp / youtube / transcript pt. 1 / transcript pt. 2
reading the fiction is integral to understanding both the albums and the mechanisms themselves. the fiction is a collection of short stories set in the mechanisms universe posted on their website here and compiled by me here, with an extra high noon over camelot story here. (there are also audio versions for ‘mirror mirror’ and ‘a rebel yell’ included on both the website and the compilation).
the crew of the aurora
as for the crew, at their peak there were nine members played by people, as well as the ex-member dr carmilla, who has extensive solo lore and is still active (which we’ll touch on in a few paragraphs). there is also their ship, the aurora, who is sentient and has her own lore. in fact, every member of the crew has their own backstory, set in a different genre or historical period; for example, nastya rasputina's is historical, jonny d’ville’s is a western and marius von raum’s is a mecha anime. however, they’re all still different flavors of steampunk! below, i’ll list each member, their performer, and the main sources of lore about them. for the majority of them, they have their own song in tales to be told, but there are a few outliers. everyone also has their own bio up on the website, which can all be found here.
the aurora (n/a, ship)- on aurora (meta)
jonny d’ville (jonny sims)- one eyed jacks (song), jonny before he was mechanized (meta)
nastya rasputina (anonymous)- cyberian demons (song)
ivy alexandria (morgan wilkinson)- archive footage (fiction), crew bio
ashes o’reilly (frank voss)- lucky sevens (song)
drumbot brian (ben below)- lost in the cosmos (song), crew bio
the toy soldier (jessica law)- the story of the toy soldier (fiction)
gunpowder tim (tim ledsam)- gunpowder tim vs the moon kaiser (song/minialbum)
marius von raum (kofi young)- the death of byron von raum summary (blog post)
raphaella la cognizi (r l hughes)- crew bio
if you’ve noticed the crew bio doesn’t say much about raphaella, that’s because we know little to nothing about her backstory. the only thing we have to go on is a quote from the tv tropes page, which looking at the edit history, was likely written by one of the mechanisms. the quote is ‘Science officer who may or may not have cheated her way onto the ship after becoming a little too interested.‘ and the page is here.
the majority of fandom content is about the crew, working off of what we get from the tales to be told songs, the live gigs, and the fiction.
dr carmilla
speaking of characters with obscure lore, let’s talk about dr carmilla! rather than linger, i’ll just link my carmilla basics post, which is a comprehensive summary of who she is in and out of universe. to summarize, she’s a character based on the novella ‘carmilla’ by sheridan le fanu, commonly regarded as the first vampire novel, but her lore has diverged heavily from that original starting point since then. she is the oldest out of all of the crew, and made the majority of the other crew members immortal. she, as well as aurora, is from a planet called terra, which was destroyed partially as a result of her actions. her character is defined by her immortality and how she deals with it, her experiences on terra, her relationship with the mechanisms, and her dysfunctional relationship with her ex-girlfriend loreli, the last of which is the most covered by her songs. out of universe, she is played by maki yamazaki. all her lore lines up with what happened out of universe, and ties to the fact the mechanisms were originally dr carmilla and the mechanisms. she has two solo albums and two singles, which i’ll link below.
ageha (prototype edition) (album)- bandcamp | youtube
exhumed and {un}plugged (album)- bandcamp | youtube
the city {nex:type mix} (single, in-character cover)- bandcamp | youtube
eleven (single)- bandcamp | youtube
the majority of her lore is still to be officially revealed, and will be in the trilogy of albums maki yamazaki is working on.
further reading
if you’d like to delve further into the lore, there are a few sources i use! there are official, in-character, blogs, as well as things that are harder to dredge up; i won’t link them here, but some sources include @/thedreadvampy (the band’s artist, as well as morgan wilkinson’s sister and kofi young’s partner; don’t bother her for lore or anything, but she’s previously made posts sharing previously unknown information), old websites and deleted content found on the wayback machine, the tv tropes pages, and most notably the lore doc.
the ‘maki forbidden lore doc’ is an archive of all the lore maki yamazaki has shared on the mechscord, the official mechanisms discord which she’s on, and her own personal server, where she’s running an arg (alternate reality game) as a way of relaying more lore about the dr carmilla universe. for an idea of the scale, the doc is currently 91 pages and 28346 words, and recontextualizes much of what is known about dr carmilla and maki’s canon of the mechanisms universe. it is confidential to anyone not in her discord or the mechscord, as she’s said that this lore isn’t thought out nearly as much as the albums and is subject to change, so she’d rather it not be out in the open. however, information on how to join the mechscord can be found here. there is also a non-canonical fan project based on the arg in progress, but information on it is also confidential for now.
with regards to the above phrase ‘maki’s canon’ it’s worth noting that all of the individual band members have their own idea of what counts as canon and what doesn’t, and as you foray deeper into lore that division becomes more and more apparent.
with that, here are the mechanisms’ blogs. they are all both run in-character by the main nine band members and inactive unless i note otherwise.
twitter
tumblr
facebook
website/wordpress (run ic by tereshkova’s ghost, the blogbot, for the most part)
carmilla twitter (active, run ic by dr carmilla)
conclusion
now that we’re coming to the end of this, i’d like to thank whoever got this far, and to say a few words. my interest in the mechanisms has been slowly fading, and i’ve been writing less and less meta and lapsing in keeping up with new lore myself. honestly, i’m pretty worn out by how much i’ve done on this blog and in this fandom, and the commitments i’ve assigned myself. i do have plans for future meta, but it’s unlikely they’ll come to fruition. so, i thought i’d do a new version of my two oldest posts on this blog, and hopefully enable other people to look into the lore and theorize themselves with the new information.
to find more information, remember there’s a mechanisms wiki, and that my askbox is always open.
thanks for reading!

How Star Trek: Discovery Formed Its Season 4 Federation
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Ever since jumping into the 32nd century, Star Trek: Discovery has had a new lease on narrative life. In addition to the character consequences that organically come from an entire crew leaving their friends, family, and homes for a future entirely unknown, Season 3 began to delve into an exploration of what the Federation looks like centuries after most of the events featured in the Star Trek franchise. Last season, we found out what caused “The Burn,” the mysterious event that led to millions of Federation members dying when warp cores across the system near-simultaneously exploded. (Spoiler: it was a traumatized kid.) In Season 4, we will the Federation move on after that discovery, continuing to build back the foundation of the organization that has come to represent the hope at the heart of the Star Trek narrative.
But what will that foundation look like? Which alien races and planets will be a part of it? We got a glimpse of an answer to those questions in the trailer for Season 4, which shows the Federation leadership around a table. In the group, we see some familiar characters, including Ni’Var President T’Rin. We also meet some new characters, including the already much-discussed Federation president, whom we know from promotional interviews has a mix of Cardassian, Bajoran, and human ancestry—the main races involved in the struggle at the heart of Deep Space Nine story. The character seems to be straight-up DS9 fanbait, and I’m not complaining.
The new Federation President for the 32nd Century is a Cardassian-Bajoran-Human hybrid and played by actress @chelahhorsdal (Firefly Lane, Man in the High Castle). Welcome to the #StarTrek family Chelah!#StarTrekDiscovery pic.twitter.com/rOjPjtTFtV
— Trek Central 🔜 DST (@TheTrekCentral) October 9, 2021
Speaking of DS9 fanbait, the trailer also includes a shot of a Ferengi in a Starfleet captain’s uniform, implying that the Ferengi have also joined the Federation. The shot has gotten a lot of attention from Trek fandom for the redesign of the Ferengi look, but frankly I’m just glad to have Ferengi back in the Star Trek universe fold, as part of this strange new future. When the Ferengi were first introduced in The Next Generation, they were meant to be relatively straight-forward antagonists. When they were deemed insufficiently scary, they turned into comedic menaces. It wasn’t until DS9 that the Ferengi got some proper complexity through the recurring characters of Ferengi family Quark, Rom, and Nog. I’m eager to see what this new generation of Ferengi will look like, and how Star Trek: Discovery will use the traditionally hyper-capitalistic culture to tell its Season 4 story.

— Sara (@SaraSandMartell) October 10, 2021
How did Discovery go about choosing the characters who would make up the Federation leadership in Season 4? We had a chance to ask showrunner Michelle Paradise ahead of the season’s November 18th premiere.
“We’re always looking for who are the different alien species that we’re interested in,” says Paradise. “We’re always in this new future, looking at how can we mix things up a little bit. What are the species that we haven’t spent a lot of time with? Who can we see? So I think it came out of some of those discussions as well. And just what do we want to see around that table? And what do we want to suggest about the Federation at this point? At the end of Season 3, the Federation is starting to get to a better place. We’ve figured out The Burn. And we understand that it’s not an ongoing thing. And so, coming into Season 4, it’s a question of where’s the Federation now? What do we want to suggest about it? And where does the Federation still have to go? So it was a lot of those questions that led to those decisions.”
What questions do you have about the Federation in Season 4? Which alien races would you like to see incorporated into the story? Let us know in the comments below.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });

And Now
for no reason at all: all Star Trek shows ranked by me.
8. Enterprise
The 2000-Archer-Series. God, I hated that show. The first season is paaaaainfully boring, the Vulkans moved from “Well, you may not like it but logic dictates...” to “Our only motivation is to be a prick to humans”, the Cold Temporal War plot never goes anywhere. Then in season 3 or whatnot they have their big 9/11-but-in-space-attack and captain Archer decides “Torture is good, actually.” Oh and I hated the intro music.
7. Discovery
Effects and action are nifty, but the whole plot is so incredible stupid grimdark. (Mind you, I usualy like grimdark). Then they bring in the mirrorverse and it gets even grimdarker and it is all gaaarbaaage. Never made it past season 1.
6. TOS
I have not seen a lot of the original series. Sometimes I want to, but sets and storys are so cheesy at times. From what I have seen there are 3 plots that are to be combined at will: Kirk vs a godlike entity, Kirk vs a supercomputer and Kirk vs an alien planet that looks and dresses like earth in the past.
Overall it is allright I guess.
5. Voyager
Voyager is nice, stoopid action fun. The Borg stuff is nice (although they became victim to severe powercreep) and there are some episodes I think of foundly (Year of Hell is my favorite 2-parter). Seven of Nine was a shameless pandering to a demographic I was part of at the time so that was nice and the Emergency Medical Holographic program is one of the best Star Trek characters of all time, hands down. Voyagers weak sides are the writers need to return to status quo at the end of each episode and the really bland characters of Chakotay, Kim, Paris, Torres and Kess.
4. Lower Decks
I just finished this, so maybe it has an unfair advantage, but Lower Decks rules. It is the first comedy-series set in the Star Trek universe and it uses that power to follow up on (and poke fun at) a lot of stuff the other series established. It derives much of its humor from aspiring-to-greatness-and-failing and reminded me alot of Venture Brothers in that regard. Its humor starts in the ‘mean’ camp, but the show stays true to the ideals of understanding and exploration a thousend times better than Discovery did.
3. The Orville
Yes, Seth McFarlanes Star Trek parody-series is better than 60% of real, canonical Star Trek. Deal with it. Now, you might think that The Orville is obsolete with the Lower Decks, but no. First of all there is a lot more of it. Second, as much as I enjoyed Lower Decks, lets be real: Boimler is a whiny bitch no one likes and Tendi and Rutherford are essentially the same character. On the other hand every character of the Orville is unique and fleshed out, even that walking snot guy. It has an interesting universe and some episodes I cant stop thinking about (for example All the World Is Birthday Cake, about a civilisation that takes zodiac signs deadly serious). Look, lets be real: It is TNG, but with dick jokes. I love it.
2. The Next Generation
It allmost has it all: space mysteries, interesting philosophical questions, strange ideas, the wonder of exploration, compassion saves the day and a lot of meme potential. This show rules.
1. Deep Space 9
The best Trek show and one of the best SF-shows overall. It has everything that made TNG great, but improves in two major points: first of all, every character is great. Every character. No other show on this list made me so interested in the lifes of every. Single. One. Of its cast. I love the chemistry of Bashir and O’Brien, Bashir and Garak, Kira and Dax, Quork and Odo, they are all GREAT. Just the character driven stuff alone is the best Trek ever deliverd.
But then there is the Dominion War. A long, consistent narative (unusual for its time. TNG and Voyager always snapped back to status quo, so this was really something new for me back then). It has a lot of great action, and it touches on dark and morally ambigious matters, in a way later shows tried and failed. If you want to binge one series during the next lockdown (one coming up in germany right now) give this one a shot. Just bear with it for the first season, it gets good once Sisko gets bald.
Not Rated - The Animated Series
I have not seen it an probably never will. Animation of that era is...well, they tried their best.
