I watched American Born Chinese, and it is an enjoyable series, honestly. It's silly and fun but it's also a show with a really big heart, it's a show that doesn't take itself too seriously but also makes a point to open important conversations regarding culture and identity, typecasting/stereotyping, the importance of speaking out for yourself, the struggle of breaking the glass ceiling in industries, etc. I also love the many references the show made to art/media forms, like the manga, sitcom, and xianxia, so it's like a study in intertextuality but also feels like a celebration of art. Overall, I could feel that this show was made with a lot of earnest love and thought, and I really hope it gets to tell its story in full!!

TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
American Born Chinese (2023, USA)
Creator: Kelvin Yu (based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang)
Mini-review:
I loved this so much! Sure, it has its flaws, but its strengths far outweigh them. The show feels refreshing and almost groundbreaking thanks to the way it takes inspiration from Journey to the West and Chinese culture. With these elements, the show gets to tell a fantastic story about coming of age and finding your identity. It also tackles the topic of representation head-on, with a beautiful monologue by Ke Huy Quan in one of the last episodes. I can't think of many TV shows that talk so frankly about this, and American Born Chinese deserves big kudos for that.
But the main reason why this show is a hit is its cast. For starters, we have legends like Michelle Yeoh, the aforementioned Ke Huy Quan and Daniel Wu. Obviously, they are as great as anyone would expect from them. But the young cast also delivers: Ben Wang's comedic timing is perfect, and Jimmy Liu pretty much steals the show with an incredibly charming and adorable performance. On top of all this, the action scenes are fantastic, with amazing choreographies and very stylish and cinematic direction. Also, I thought this was supposed to be a limited series, but I guess it's not? I'm not complaining, cause I really enjoyed it, but I hope it's doesn't end up being cancelled.
P.S. Why the f**k is Disney+ not promoting the hell out of this? They have Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu from Everything Everywhere All At Once, plus Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed the Shang-Chi movie, and they are doing nothing to promote it. It's seriously baffling.

American Born Chinese opinion (no spoilers)
Just finished Season 1. Didn't read the comic and won't, because I just watched it for Sun Wukong. I'm eating up everything I get of him and DAMN, is Daniel Wu HOT! The series in itself is beautifully done. I really hope that the (american-)chinese watchers feel themselves represented, but I couldn't know.
All characters are amazing, acted out great and very believable to me. What they did to the jttw characters is so nice and the best concept I've seen for a while. Female Sandy will never stop to be cool and Michelle Yeoh as Guanyin is pure GOLD! The role and acting of Ke Huy Quan was impressive and he delivered one of the moments at which I teared up a little. I have to admit, there weren't many of this moments, most of the time the series was just fun and I like that.
Something I really appreciated: The school-kids. None of them were these absolutely over-written, pure evil bullies you see in to much series. They all got their stuff together pretty good. Loved that.
The story has it's lenghts in the middle, but the finale, holy shit, I laughed and cheered. Really hoping for a season 2. Yeah, mostly because of Daniel Wu, god damn, what a Wukong... But I'd love to the see more of all the characters. So, I recommend it!

Imagine an ASOIAF spin-off set in Yi-Ti where:
1) Tony Leung is the god-emperor of Yi-Ti who is trying his best to keep the empire together but is eventually betrayed and killed by his political enemies.
2) Gong Li is the god-empress who has to take over the throne after Tony Leung is killed, which puts her on the path of becoming a vengeful monarch.
3) Michelle Yeoh is the conniving royal who wants her family to rule Yi-Ti.
4) Simu Liu and Ellen Wong are the royal siblings that are fucking each other.
5) Ming-Na Wen is the honorable royal who is trying to stop Michelle Yeoh’s family from taking over.
6) Daniel Wu is the badass knight who protects the god-emperor and god-empress.
7) Ludi Lin is the handsome prince who you think will be the protagonist but gets killed in either season 2 or 3 because he foolishly thought he could ignore traditions.
8) Donnie Yen is the douchebag royal who is always choosing violence and wants to make a spectacle of everything (so…Daemon).
9) Ke Huy Quan is Yi-Ti’s Littlefinger/Varys.
