Studios are so obsessed with trying to find the next cash cow that they will kill the calf before it's weaned from its mothers milk.

Shout-out to “Crazy Rich Asians” for giving us the year of Ke Huy Quan. If it weren’t for the success of that movie, Ke Huy Quan wouldn’t have been inspired to return to acting. So, because he was inspired by CRA, he returns to acting and:
1) wins a Golden Globe for his role in “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once”
2) joins the MCU in “Loki” season 2
3) gets a role in “American Born Chinese”
4) gets another big movie role in the Russo Bros’ next film, which also stars Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt
That is one hell of a butterfly effect.

can't believe american born chinese has all four non-white leads from the most recent best picture, best directing, best actress, supporting actor and actress oscar winning film (michelle yeoh, ke huy quan, stephanie hsu and james hong) and one of the episodes was directed by Shang-Chi's Destin Daniel Crettin and another by LUCY LIU and it's a chinese folk tale inspired teen fantasy adventure that also deals with being caught between how you feel and how you're perceived as a western-born chinese teen like GUYS??? MICHELLE YEOH PLAYS A GODDESS????

I'VE ONLY SEEN EPISODE ONE AND I LOVE THIS SHOW ALREADY 😭 I FEEL SO SEEN
WEI-CHEN HAS THE EXACT SAME HAIR AS MY BROTHER
THEY HAD GAI LAN ON THE TABLE AND A JAR THAT I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS BUT I'VE SEEN IT IN OUR FRIDGE MY ENTIRE LIFE
WEI-CHEN'S LUNCHBOX IS EXACTLY LIKE WHAT MY FRIEND IN MIDDLE SCHOOL USED TO HAVE
HIS WATER BOTTLE IS THE SAME TYPE MY DAD USED (and that slightly tanned white plastic idk if this is even accurate but MAJOR CHINESE VIBES)
THE REMOTE WAS COVERED IN PLASTIC WRAP (MY GRANDMA DOES THAT!!!!!! USING PLASTIC WRAP ON RANDOM HOUSEHOLD OBJECTS!!!!!!)
THEY SAID AIYA. I SAY AIYA ALL THE TIME. I'VE EVEN SAID IT HERE.
MONKEY!! LOOKS AMAZING!! GUANYIN!! LOOKS AMAZING!! THE MUSIC IS BEAUTIFUL THE CHOREOGRAPHY IS BEAUTIFUL
AND THE WAY THE WRITE THE TEENAGERS IS THE FIRST ACCURATE REPRESENTATION OF HOW TEENAGERS BEHAVE THAT I'VE SEEN EVER??? LIKE YES TEENAGERS DO CARE THEY AREN'T CRUEL DOUCHEBAGS BY NATURE THEY CARE THEY JUST DON'T KNOW JACK ABOUT EXPRESSING EMPATHY
EVERY AWKWARD HONEST THING JIN SAID AND DID RESONATED SO HARD WITH ME BECAUSE THAT!! IS HOW TEENAGERS BEHAVE!! THEY REALLY SAID "TEENAGERS ARE HUMAN AND THAT MEANS THEY CAN MAKE HURTFUL DECISIONS WITH GOOD INTENT AND THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY'RE DOOMED TO BE CRUEL PEOPLE!!!!!"
THIS SHOW IS STEEPED IN THINGS FROM ME AND MY FAMILY AND MY COMMUNITY

I watched American Born Chinese, and it is an enjoyable series, honestly. It's silly and fun but it's also a show with a really big heart, it's a show that doesn't take itself too seriously but also makes a point to open important conversations regarding culture and identity, typecasting/stereotyping, the importance of speaking out for yourself, the struggle of breaking the glass ceiling in industries, etc. I also love the many references the show made to art/media forms, like the manga, sitcom, and xianxia, so it's like a study in intertextuality but also feels like a celebration of art. Overall, I could feel that this show was made with a lot of earnest love and thought, and I really hope it gets to tell its story in full!!
