sand battery
What Is a ‘Sand Battery’ 2023?
A “sand battery” is a high temperature thermal energy storage that uses sand or sand-like materials as its storage medium. It stores energy in sand as heat.
Tumblr media
Its main purpose is to work as a high-power and high-capacity reservoir for excess wind and solar energy. The energy is stored as heat, which can be used to heat homes, or to provide hot steam and high temperature process heat to industries that are often fossil-fuel dependent.
As the world shifts towards higher and higher renewables fraction in electricity production, the intermittent nature of these energy sources cause challenges to energy networks. The sand battery helps to ambitiously upscale renewables production by ensuring there’s always a way to benefit from clean energy, even if the surplus is massive.
The first commercial sand battery in the world is in a town called Kankaanpää, Western Finland. It is connected to a district heating network and heating residential and commercial buildings such as family homes and the municipal swimming pool. The district heating network is operated by an energy utility called Vatajankoski.
The term “sand battery” was introduced to grand audience by a BBC News story published the 5th of July 2022. The story was written by BBC News’ Environmental Correspondent Matt McGrath.
Read the story: BBC News: Climate change: 'Sand battery' could solve green energy's big problem

UPDATE: We’ve been getting a lot of attention after our sand battery went viral. Due to a massive amount of requests and messages, our reply times can be very long. We appreciate your patience. Thank you! Please also note that we don’t have products for individual homes yet.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the structure of your heat storage?
It is an insulated silo made of steel housing, filled with sand and heat transfer pipes. Additionally, equipment outside the storage is required, such as automation components, valves, a fan, and a heat exchanger or a steam generator.
How do you heat the sand?
With electricity from the grid or from local production, in both cases from fluctuating sources such as wind and solar. We charge it when clean and cheap electricity is available. The electrical energy is transferred to the heat storage using a closed loop air-pipe arrangement. Air is heated up using electrical resistors and circulated in the heat transfer piping.
How hot is the sand?
The maximum temperature in the Kankaanpää heat storage is about 600 degrees Celsius. However, the temperature may even be higher depending on customer needs. In practice, the maximum temperature of a sand-based heat storage is not limited by the properties of the storage medium, but by the heat resistance of the materials used in the construction and control of the storage.
How do you get heat out of the heat storage?
The heat storage is unloaded by blowing cool air through the pipes. It heats up as it passes through the storage, and it can be used for example to convert water into process steam or to heat district heating water in an air-to-water heat exchanger.
Why do you use sand?
Many solid materials, such as sand, can be heated to temperatures well above the boiling point of water. Sand-based heat storages can store several times the amount of energy that can be stored in a water tank of a similar size; this is thanks to the large temperature range allowed by the sand. So, it saves space and it allows versatile use in many industrial applications.
What kind of a sand you are using?
The heat storage is not very sensitive to sand grain size. We prefer high density, low-cost materials that are not from scarce sources. Someone else’s dirt could be our heat storage medium. We prefer to use materials that are not suitable for construction industry.
Does it matter what the grain size of the sand is?
Not much, we prefer to use those grain sizes that are not suitable for construction industry.
How is the heat storage insulated?
The heat storage is made of steel and insulated with standard, heat resistant insulating materials. The insulation is all around the heat storage between the outer steel layer and the inner one.
How long does the sand stay hot in the winter?
It can stay hot for months if needed, but the actual use case of the heat storage in Kankaanpää is to charge it in about 2-week cycles. The heat storage has its best range of use when it is charged and discharged 20 to 200 times per year, depending on the application.
Is the outer surface of the heat storage hot?
The surface of the storage is not hot, because the heat stays inside the storage—where it should be.
Can it store electricity?
Not as such, as it stores energy in the form of heat. The heat can be converted back to electricity using turbines like the ORC-turbine or a steam turbine. This requires additional investments to the turbine technology, and the conversion to electricity has inherent losses, thus complicating the economical side.
Is this a new technology?
Well, yes and no. The idea of heating sand to store energy is not new. Our way of doing things and commercializing it in large scale applications is.
#Sand Battery: An Innovative Energy Storage Solution#In recent years#the world has seen a growing demand for renewable energy sources that can help reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate the effec#energy storage remains a major challenge for the wider adoption of these technologies. This is where the sand battery comes in#an innovative energy storage solution that has been gaining traction in the scientific community.#A sand battery is a type of rechargeable battery that uses sand as its electrolyte#the substance that facilitates the flow of electric current. The concept of using sand in batteries is not new#as it has been studied since the 1980s. However#recent advancements in nanotechnology have made it possible to create high-performance sand batteries that are more efficient#durable#and cost-effective than ever before.#The basic principle behind a sand battery is simple. The battery consists of two electrodes#an anode and a cathode#separated by a layer of sand. When the battery is charged#electrons flow from the anode to the cathode through the sand#creating a flow of electricity. When the battery is discharged#the process is reversed#and the electrons flow back to the anode#providing electrical power.#One of the key advantages of sand batteries is their high energy density#which means they can store a large amount of energy in a small space. This makes them ideal for use in applications where space is limited#such as in mobile devices and electric vehicles. In addition#sand batteries are non-toxic#environmentally friendly#and have a long lifespan#making them a more sustainable energy storage solution compared to traditional batteries.#Another advantage of sand batteries is their low cost. Unlike traditional batteries that use expensive metals such as lithium and cobalt#sand batteries use abundant and widely available materials such as sand#graphite#and aluminum. This makes them a more affordable energy storage solution

Tourism poster for Mystery Flesh Pit National Park, 1980
From an area tourism book of the era: "While the rural areas of west Texas are known for their sparse populations, one tourist attraction seems to continually generate a steady stream of visitors around vacation seasons. The titular "Mystery Flesh Pit" has been a wellspring of fascination for geologists, biologists, sociologists, engineers and the general public alike. Guests are advised to book age-appropriate tours and activities well in advance of their visit, though the pheromonal discharges and the overall agitation level of the MFP can vary with short notice. Visitors should be advised to be prepared for changes in schedule & availability."

December 27, 2015, Harlem Globetrotter Meadowlark G. Lemon died at 83.
Meadowlark George Lemon III was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on April 25, 1932. He discovered the Harlem Globetrotters at 11 years old while watching a newsreel at the local theater. He was determined to one day make the team. Lemon didn’t have enough money to buy basketball equipment, so he made his own. He made the Basketball hoop out of an onion sack and a coat hanger and used an empty carnation milk can as his ball. According to Lemon, he made his first shot, a two-pointer.
He continued to play basketball in high school. Realizing the fierce competition, he logged long hours on the court to strengthen his skills. He briefly attended Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University, a historically black university in Tallahassee, Florida. He was drafted into the Army in 1952. He completed basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, before serving two years in Salzburg, Germany.
While in Germany, Lemon played on an Army base’s basketball team, averaging 55 points a game. He was discharged in 1954. He then played for the Kansas City All-Stars for a year before joining the Harlem Globetrotters. Lemon played for 23 consecutive years with the Harlem Globetrotters and earned the name “Clown Prince of Basketball.” In the 1980s, he started his comedic basketball team “Meadowlark Lemon’s Bucketeers,” and then he established “The Shooting Stars” before founding “Meadowlark Lemon’s Harlem All-Stars.” Lemon returned to the Harlem Globetrotters in 1993 for a 50-game season.
In 1986, Lemon became an ordained minister. In 1989, he founded “Camp Meadowlark,” a camp designed to improve young people’s basketball skills while teaching them the importance of education and staying healthy. He earned his Doctor of Divinity in 1998. In 2003, Lemon was inducted into the NBA Basketball Hall of Fame.

Soulmate AU Danny Phantom, and Vlad and Danny found out that they are soulmate for each other from the very-very first meeting, like they don't even know the character of another, all they got is sh*** of a big age gap, and as for Vlad also: you've been having a crush on your soulmate's mom for 20 years. Idk, it may be skin's glowing where soulmates are touching each other? How much in shock do halfas be? Which parent accept it first?
They were called soul sigils. Temporary signs that appeared on the skin of people whose lives were destined to entwine.
Sigils presented twice, sometimes three times, during a person’s life: at birth, indicating that their partner was already alive and waiting for them; at the first meeting; and at the final separation.
Vlad Masters was not born with a sigil. His left hand went unmarked through his childhood. He lied to his peers in high school, saying he’d already gotten his a long time ago.
By the time he enrolled in his first semester at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he was beginning to worry. How much of his life was going to pass before his special someone was born?
At twenty-four, on the verge of completing his Master’s degree, he began to believe that perhaps he was destined to be alone. It wasn’t unheard of. Nearly twenty percent of the population never presented soul sigils. They were free to live however they pleased. It wouldn’t have been a bad fate, but Vlad yearned for partnership. His parents were dead, his family estranged. And Madeline, the girl he’d hoped would be The One, had her sigil appear when she met his best friend, Jack.
Vlad slept in the lab that night. He couldn’t bear to go back to his dorm room and listen to Jack’s lovesick exultations.
Then the portal accident happened, and he stopped caring about sigils and love for the next few years. He was too busy recovering from the effects of radiation poisoning to concern himself with the silly banalities taking place outside his hospital ward.
Maybe he would die alone. That was always a possibility.
He didn’t. He was discharged in 1983 and walked out the hospital doors a new man.
Half of one, anyway.
By the late 1980s he was learning how to use his newfound powers, robbing his way toward a life of affluence. He began construction on his own portal, using the blueprints stolen from Jack—who, he discovered, had married Maddie while he was rotting in a hospital bed and had moved to a podunk town called Amity Park. They were expecting their first child, a girl.
Vlad threw himself into his work and ignored the Fentons and their happy, growing family. His loneliness gnawed at him.
Late one evening, just a few months before his thirty-first birthday, he pulled his work glove off his itching hand and blinked, staring.
His sigil. But he felt no joy. How could he? His soulmate was young enough to be his child.
Within twenty-four hours the mark had faded, and Vlad pretended he’d never seen it. He had no interest in getting involved with someone so young.
Fourteen years later, the Fenton family climbed the front steps of Vlad’s home with their teenage son, Danny, who was absently scratching his hand.
Vlad felt the tingling. He didn’t have to look. The evidence was staring back at him: a pair of stunned blue eyes that flashed ecto-green.

visual novels I finished in 2023
I played quite a few visual novels in 2023, most of which are indie, and I want to share some highlights from that list. these are all VNs that I played all the way through and loved, so treat this also as a recommendation for each of these.
mahoyo
In the mansion on the hill, there lived two witches... It is the late 1980s—the twilight of an era of beauty and vigor. A boy moves to the city, barely missing two witches living in modern times. The boy leads a completely ordinary life. She carries herself with gallant pride. The girl lives a sleepy, hidden life. Each walks a starlit path. One would never expect their paths to cross. The story of how these three disparate people came together is soon to be told.
Tumblr media
I've ranted a ton about mahoyo here and how much I love it. it truly is one of the best looking visual novels I've ever seen and one of my all-time favorites. I'll never be able to approach game direction the same after playing this. please do yourself a favor and play it, it's finally on steam.
model employee
Model Employee is a corporate horror visual novel where players take control of  the latest individual amongst millions to start working in one of Tethys' online shopping labyrinthine warehouses. Just discharged from the hospital and massively in debt for their life-saving cybernetics, the player-character must adapt to the "extreme" work-life balance of a Tethys Team Member- but they have help.  Penny, the artificial personality that controls all security, waste disposal, and employee surveillance in the facility, specializes in reinforcing an especially cutthroat variety  of workplace culture- and she's taken an interest in you.  With a vibrant cast, PC-98 inspired visuals and multiple endings, Model Employee is a modern horror story that'll stick with you long after you've clocked out of your shift. If you want to get ahead in your career, you gotta be willing to take some risks.
Tumblr media
model employee is such a tightly structured visual novel for being made in just one month, making full use of everything while surprising you at every corner. every part of this game was so well planned and thought out- dystopian corporate satire isn't my cup of tea (we're living it) but the way they present everything in this game makes it feel so much more intense.
itch.io
beary the hatchet
It's Halloween 199X, and you killed someone during your morning shift. Honestly it's inconvenient. This job was imperfect, sure, but you got to wear a mask with no questions asked and the pay was livable. But now you'll have to keep the body in the backrooms till your shift is done. Bummer. "You're... the absolutely WICKED and AWESOME Bearwater Grizzly Killer, aren't you?!" ...and now enters the dreaded true crime fan.
Tumblr media
beary the hatchet is such a uniquely lovely game to look at, even if the subject matter is grim. I love the color palette and tones in this, I love the 2.5D graphics, I love how expressive all of the designs are. it's a game oozing with style.
itch.io
disconnect
Late at night, a phone call from a friend keeps disconnecting from you... On and off, on and off, constantly... ...What would you do if you realized your friend wasn't who you thought they were? And how would you react when the truth was finally revealed? ("̷̢̑W̸̨̊o̸̫͊u̷̱͝ḽ̸͛d̴͉̐ ̵̚ͅy̵̜̽o̸̥͗u̷̮̎ ̷̜̏s̶̤̄t̸̥͐i̴̻̕l̸̰͝l̸͉̓ ̷͕́ȁ̸̩c̸̡̓t̵̜̊ ̵͓̈t̶̙̄h̶̦͂e̸̩͠ ̸̩̅s̶̘̏a̷̪͛m̵̮͒e̴͖͑ ̸̭́w̷̨̚á̴̱y̵̯̑?̶͎̌"̷͈̆) Find out what happened to our scaredy-cat protagonist, Indie-a famous horror storyteller on the H-T-M (Horror, Tales, and Mystery) forum. What would she do when she unintentionally uncovered a mystery hidden deep within her own home?
Tumblr media
I love the style of disconnect and the unorthodox way of getting to the truth of the matter. I'm not normally one to play furry VNs, but the designs are adorable and I love the presentation of the game, it has a lot of animation in it. there's also one moment not too far in on this screen that made me scream...
itch.io
curse of the juniper tree
Curse of the Juniper tree is a tale of two siblings, a cursed tree and an isolated village. It is a short kinetic visual novel featuring 2d exploration. Walk around the snowy village and talk to its inhabitants! Story is loosely based off the fairytale called The Juniper Tree by the Brothers Grimm in Grimm's Fairy Tales in 1812.
Tumblr media
this is a lovely and short story about two siblings living in a frozen land together. it's a very atmospheric story with so many beautiful blues and detailed character designs. the controls were a bit hard to figure out at times but it's worth your time.
itch.io
reaplaced
Grea Perrim is a reaper of souls, and it's her duty to bring the deceased to the other side. But in the world of reapers, death isn't any kind of equalizer. The value of a soul is directly tied to the peculiarity of its death. Grea's supernatural senses bring her to a Halloween house party with three costumed guests. She soon finds the most valuable kind of soul: the victim of a locked-room murder. In order to reap the soul, Grea must unravel the identity of its killer and explain its death in full. Is this the work of a human? A witch? Or something else entirely...?
Tumblr media
reaplaced is a fun little whodunnit set on Halloween about a grim reaper out on the hunt who finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery. it's much more indepth than I was expecting and the soundtrack is wonderful—there's a lot of small touches to it that make it great.
itch.io
dual chroma [demo]
A gilded king, a powerful sorceress, and a malevolent figure governing a foul legion of beasts in a ruthless war against the Light.  For centuries, the Galens Empire has thrived upon the ancient tragedy that formed its foundations. No more than a fading past inked upon the pages of history, the Empire reigned in relative peace—until the monsters returned.  As the newest advisor to the Second Prince, you find yourself at the heart of a captivating saga, where mystery, magic, terror, and romance intertwine. Your choices in this narrative will determine not only the Empire's destiny, but also the fate of your heart. But take heed, for the path you tread may shatter the shackles of doomed love or repeat the ruin of Galens' past.
Tumblr media
I don't play many otome demos but I played several that were submitted to otome jam this year, with dual chroma being one of them. I was surprised by the amount of care and attention put into the demo- it feels very solid with a lot of polish put into easing the player into this high fantasy world. I think I had an issue with how the tooltips would be shown (probably the frequency of them, as the in-line tooltips are very helpful) but it's been months since then.
itch.io
we know the devil
Anyone can kill the devil; that's why they always make teens the vampire slayers, the magical girls. But some kids can't even get that right; and that's why meangirl Neptune, tomboy Jupiter, and shy shy Venus have to endure one more week of summer camp and each other, singing boring songs about jesus, doing busywork for adults, and hoping god's radio can't hear them. Before they can leave the summer scouts, they've got to spend twelve hours in the loneliest cabin in the woods and wait for the devil to come and live through the night--or not. You know.
Tumblr media
we know the devil didn't release this year but I finally got around to playing it. it's a visceral experience, something that feels foreign and familiar at the same time. I love the direction for it, the sketchy monochrome sprites against the colored photos- parts when there aren't any characters on screen feel that much more real, like you're watching found footage because of how tense everything is.
itch.io
doppelganger
The story is set in an alternate universe where the player is struggling with the memories of what they know to be TEMPUS and the mysterious look-alikes who pull them every which way. Can the player figure out the truth about this twisted world and return to the guild?
Tumblr media
okay this is a bit of a weird one to end on, I just wanted to talk about it. doppelganger is a game made by holostars staff, i.e. the staff for the vtubing company cover corporation. I went into it expecting very, very little but I was presently surprised by how competently it was made. a lot of "bad" visual novels aren't fun to play, because they're overly long, extremely wordy, and aren't fun to read. I'd say doppelganger is "so bad it's good", which is a rarity for VNs- it's campy at times and over the top but doesn't overstay it's welcome, the pacing is remarkably good for what seem to be first time devs.
I cannot recommend this though if you're not already a fan of holostars tempus, as this is essentially just merch for them- think of it like a higher production voice pack or art pack. if you don't know each of the boys then you'll be lost, but if you do then grab another friend and play it, it took me about 4 hours to finish it with friends.

Since we're at the end of Pride I thought I'd post an angsty queer history-themed IceMav concept that I've been toying with.
Basically, I remembered reading somewhere that during the early days of the AIDS pandemic, the military personnel with HIV were prosecuted for sodomy, discharged without medical coverage, and in at least one instance made to live in a special barracks wing. And this got me imagining the fallout if someone at Top Gun was discovered to have it.
I see it as a few months after the first movie, Ice and Mav are instructors, they've been hooking up since shortly after Mav ended things with Charlie, but it's strictly a friends with benefits thing. The key points are:
Someone at Top Gun is discovered to have AIDS, the Navy panics, closes off the base, no leave, no visitors, but because of the logistics and politics of it all (the White House and Pentagon really want to keep it quiet that the gay plague was discovered at such an elite symbol of US military strength) it's hard for the Navy to decide what to do next.
When the patient's name and photo come out, both Ice and Mav panic because he might've been an old hookup but neither is sure, neither ever bothered asking for names, they never felt the need for another night until each other (neither is ready to think too hard about that)
They were aware of the disease, but both have internalized homophobia where they think of AIDS as something that affects the freaks, weirdos and other non-conformist queers, not more masculine presenting ones like them.
With leadership paralyzed by red tape, everyone starts to get paranoid. They start second guessing how exactly it's transmitted. Asking for a test is taboo because it's seen as admitting you did something (had sex with another man) that would make you worried you have it.
Ice and Mav cut off all contact cold turkey.
After a week Mav shows up at Ice's because he can't take the loneliness and the isolation, and he realized that with Goose gone, Ice is his closest friend. Ice hesitates but lets him in.
Instead of their usual hookup, they just talk. They both admit they're worried they have it, and how afraid they are of losing everything. That leads to a discussion of their backgrounds, their daddy issues, childhoods, etc. They start to understand each other better.
They eventually undress the other, ostensibly to check for Kaposi sarcoma, but really to share some physical intimacy that isn't sexual. After they finish exploring the other's body they fall asleep.
Slider finds them the next morning when he bursts in, ready to tell Ice off for cutting him out for the last week.
"Oh for Christs sake Tom, I knew you were a homo. I don't care, long as you keep your personal life to yourself and don't start dessin' up like Judy Garland we'll be fine. But Damnit Tom, HIM!?!"
(This is enough to qualify Ron as a decent ally by 1980s military man standards)
"Yeah, him. Look Ron, I didn't expect it to happen, but he's stuck around and he's probably, no, he's definitely gonna be here for a while... At least if he wants to."
"I do" (this is the first time they acknowledge they feel more than physical attraction to the other, and the first time either has done that to another man.)
That is how their relationship develops past just sex
They still have a lot of work to do, a lot of internal homophobia to unlearn, and a lot of external obstacles (including more homophobia, fun!) to face, but this is where it really started.
Years later they'll acknowledge the cruel irony of finding something so beautiful in such a terrible situation and admit they weren't really the heroes in this particular chapter of history. But they'll never apologize for finding each other, in whatever way fate had planned for them.
Obviously, neither of them tests positive. The Navy finally mandates it for everyone on base after a couple weeks.

Madonna poses before she was famous in New York! On February 12, 1979 photographer Martin H. M. Schreiber called an agency and they sent one of their young models for him to shoot for one of his lecture classes. Years later the model would become Madonna, the images are now to be shown in the UK for the first time at the Brighton Festival. She is often hailed as a trend setter and the undisputed queen of pop, but now a gallery in Brighton is set to show Madonna as you have never seen her before. Taken 30 years ago these black and white photographs show the unknown 20-year-old Material Girl in an intimate and sensual photo shoot. Looking remarkably like her daughter Lourdes, Madonna was a then young carefree model. Posing nude for just $30 for New York photographer Martin H. M. Schreiber in 1979, the original photographs, "The Madonna Nudes – 30th Anniversary Exhibition", were shown at Brighton's Impure Art Gallery for the first time in the UK during summer. "These photographs were taken during my photography lecture courses in New York," says 52-year-old Schreiber. "At the time she was signed to a model agency and they sent her to this job at my studio on 22nd street Manhattan."The shoot lasted a few hours and it was after that time that we got to know each other for a while." Martin H M. Schreiber developed his eye and technical abilities in the US military in the sixties, while working freelance for the New York Times. After his discharge in 1968 he attended the School of Visual Arts in New York but quit and went solo, winning honorable mention in the first Life Magazine photography contest. In 1977 he began teaching a course at Parsons on photographing the nude and his first book BODYSCAPES was published in 1980. In 1985, after Madonna had become a global icon, the shots appeared in Playboy, catapulting Schreiber to fame. Established in May 2008, Impure Art is the UK’s only permanent, commercial, erotic art gallery. It has fast acquired a reputation for showing daring and exciting work of extremely high quality. They represent over 100 local, national and international erotic artists. The Madonna Nudes – 30th Anniversary Exhibition ran from May 1 to 31 as part of Brighton Festival Fringe.

Yo. I'm not in the know so maybe u can help. I keep seeing Disclose but with the same lettering Discharge used. Are they related or is Disclose a newer band just tipping the hat? Thx
Yo! Okay, so Disclose came after Discharge did. Discharge started a sound that would eventually be called dbeat (Discharge beat) because of a distinct drum pattern they used. This was back in 1980 with their Realities of War EP, they had some earlier releases which were more Sex Pistols styled, but they switched to hardcore punk with Realities of War which is also where they first "dbeated" for lack of a better word haha Dbeat as a drum pattern made its way into metal as well, a lot of thrash and even death metal and black metal use dbeats in their music. Dbeat ultimately made a bigger impact in punk though along with a lot of riffs and general tone and distortion creating a whole subgenre and jnspiring a ton of bands like Anti Cimex, Avskum, Doom, Disfear, and many many more. Disclose came about in 1990 and took the sound of Discharge and pushed it way further into what got called Rawpunk. Way more distortion, way noisier, even faster playing, but still keeping the same dbeat sound. Also, the "Dis" of Diclose comes from the "Dis" of Discharge. You'll find a lot of "Dis" bands, all paying homage to Discharge. Also where the label disrocker came from. Anyways, there is my short rant about the bands! Hope it helped

A proud history reblog
1948 - 1996
When Perry J. Watkins was drafted in 1968 he came out as a gay man and proceeded to serve openly in the military. He received an honorable discharge when his first enlistment expired in 1970. In 1971, he reenlisted for a second three-year term, at which time the Army judged him to be "eligible for reentry on active duty." In 1974 and 1979, the Army accepted Watkins' applications for a third, and then a fourth tour of duty. Throughout his career Watkins was categorically declared to be “outstanding for his professional attitude, integrity, and suitability for assignment” and was deemed one of the “most respected and trusted soldiers, both by his superiors and his subordinates." But in 1980 Watkins was told his security clearance was being revoked. This action was appealed by his superior officers and his security clearance was re-instated. The Army responded by moving to discharge him. When Mr. Watkins sued to prevent his discharge, the Army reversed course stating it would instead deny him re-enlistment when his hitch ended in 1982. Watkins filed sued again and, in 1989, the United States Court of Appeals ordered the Army to allow Mr. Watkins re-enlist. The Bush Administration appealed the ruling but in November 1990 the Supreme Court let it stand. Rather than re-enlist, Mr. Watkins – by then 42 years old – opted to settle for full retirement benefits, an honorable discharge, retroactive pay and a retroactive promotion from staff sergeant to sergeant first class. Sgt. Perry remains the only openly gay member of the military ever to claim such a high-court victory.

Anti Dianne Feinstein/San Francisco Police (SFPD) cartoon by Moscoso and Crumb, 1985.
This satirical cartoon was one of a series that condemned Dianne Feinstein (as SF Mayor) and the San Francisco Police during the mid 1980s.
"... the department’s public troubles trace back several months before the convention, to the first reports that a police rookie attending a private party had been forced to perform a sex act with a prostitute while handcuffed to a chair.
The party (in April 1984), which took place in a back room of the Rathskeller, a restaurant popular with police officers, had been arranged to honor the police academy’s graduating class. It developed that two veteran police officers, members of the department’s vice squad, had solicited the prostitute and paid her $55.
The ''Rathskeller incident'' attracted much unwanted national attention, even becoming the basis for an episode of NBC-TV’s ''Hill Street Blues.''
Five of the officers involved were discharged, but repercussions in the department have continued. Two weeks ago, the female officer who reported the incident to her superiors filed an $8 million lawsuit, accusing other officers of having harassed her since and the police brass of failing to stop the harassment.” (LA Times)
During this period there was a series of SFPD scandals which also involved openly homophobic and violent attacks by police officers, as well as the harrassment of journalists critical of the police, and of sex workers, and a lot else besides.

Of course by the mid 1980s these were only the latest in a series of SFPD scandals, of harrassment, homophobia, racism, corruption and incompetence going right back to the beginning of policing in San Francisco.
And it was a former policeman Dan White who assassinated Harvey Milk and Mayor Moscone in 1978, with likely support from the SFPD:
And this isn't just history, only a few years ago there was an investigation over anti-LGBTQ and racist behaviour by SFPD officers.
