S5 Ep 15 Pt 1: The Gang Gets Lost in India
Ah, back to Yugioh classic. Sort of. We’re going into the second filler arc before Bakura, which I have been told is kind of nonsense. And youknow what, from the first scene--this is the first scene by the way--yeah I can see the nonsense.
Tumblr media
We got Yami cosplaying as the Chrysler building, we got Yugi saying WTFWTF, we got...this thing?
Tumblr media
This thing tells us “Join my game, Yugi!” and then the demon just kinda bounces.
Tumblr media
K, bye, I guess.
(read more under the cut)
Waking up from this nightmare, Yugi reveals that he has outgrown his good pajamas. Or maybe he just overused them like I did to my favorite pajamas during quarantine (which, not gonna lie, I hand sewed my favorite pajama pants back together 2 or 3 times like they were the Velveteen Rabbit. Quarantine pajamas and me were like best buds for a year there.)
Tumblr media
RIP Yugi’s good pajamas.
It’s fine. I’m fine.
I can get used to Yugi in his normal ass old man pajamas without any cute stars on them. I can accept this. He’s getting older. So much older that for a second I thought he was learning Hebrew, by the looks of his books on his counter. I thought...wow, is Yugi actually attempting to learn a language spoken around the time of ancient Egyptians???
Tumblr media
But uh...I went a searching and unfortunately that’s not Hebrew, and if that is a language, I don’t know what it is. Pretty sure it’s just random marks because this show has to be translated in so many languages. Man. For a second there that looked like really sneaky world building, but nah, Yugi is still kind of a dumbass who has yet to attend a solid year of school.
Also, I got to take in this mustard yellow as if I’ve seen it for the first time.
Tumblr media
It has strong building blocks energy. It’s...so much yellow and it’s extremely the vibe of that one set of animal crossing decorations that I have because it’s a very common recipe, but, can’t figure out for the life of me how to fit into any room.
Tumblr media
What am I supposed to do with these, Nintendo? Other than recreate Yugi’s Muto’s haunted game store/house?
Like I live in the Bay area and we have wild painted houses so you can see them through the fog (back when we...still had fog, RIP California) --but this is a little much. This is such strong Protagonist energy but as a house.
Also, I’ve don’t think I’ve brought this up before, but like...Yugi is loaded, right? Like he’s way too good and humble to ever say he’s loaded, and they sort of make it seem like he’s not (when compared to Seto Kaiba) but damn, this location of his real estate sure is something. That and Grandpa’s tiny shop seems to run on a constant deficit and his family just doesn’t care.
Tumblr media
We flash back a bit to Gramps sneaking out, and Yugi is like “oh great, my only Father figure I ever talk about is getting a backpack together and just...leaving without any notice, huh? Without telling me you were going to go? Didn’t think that would maybe be a little off putting?“ and Gramps is like “Yes?”
Like Gramps nearly died going to an amusement park a few episodes back so I can see why Yugi is a little bit concerned.
Tumblr media
Down the street at a little town lottery, Joey is getting further into gambling (I don’t know what those little street lotteries are called, it’s in a lot of anime--but kinda looks like mom lotteries for moms.)
Tumblr media
I’m not sure why India is on Joey Wheeler’s bucket list, seems a little random, but he went to Pegasus’ country, after all and that’s barely even a country.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joey going nuts on a lottery machine instead of going to school was pretty peak filler, so I’m not really minding this stuff so far.
Tumblr media
And then, just to spook me, check this out:
Tumblr media
I can’t believe they even let them back into a classroom. In my nerd school, if you missed one too many days, you were sent to the bad schools to be someone else’s problem. But in Yugi’s case...that either IS his school or...Yugi is failing International School, which is just a thing he’s allowed to do, because, as I said before, this kid has got to be loaded. Even Seto Kaiba was like “I’m not spending money on this school anymore. That outfit is like 50 bucks a jacket.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Youknow, I have seen all the other characters knock on Tea’s choice of cute ass monsters for the last 5 seasons, and she has never once changed them out. She is holding onto this scary seraphim thing with the many wings like every child with their first Pidgey. She does not care.
Also how is this thing cute?
like the front of this orb has a face with hearts on it but like...it is kind of remarkable what Yugioh decides is cute. Magma golem: not cute. this thing? This thing that looks like it’s a chibi version of the last chapters of the bible and will sound the trumpets of the second coming? So cuuuuute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tristan used to be the Janitor/hall monitor/square archetype. Like hell he can walk around with that 00′s R+B soundtrack.
Tumblr media
Joey appears in order to get us the hell out of school, and the art team retires this school background for the rest of what I assume is this entire series.
Goodbye school. Maybe you’ll come back with Bakura. Which would be weird, since rumor is that arc takes place in ancient Egypt.
On their walk home, Tea lets out in an inner monologue that no one could hear that after 5 straight seasons of his BS, she’s sick and tired of Pharaoh being the center of attention all the time and she needs a freakin break.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TBH, as she was thinking in her head like “Pharoah is just so freakin much” Yugi switched over to Pharaoh and was like “WHATS UP TEA, THINKING ABOUT ME??” and I thought for a split second maybe he read her mind with his Pharaoh powers.
And like...maybe he did? Seems like a thing he can just do but chooses not to tell anyone about. I mean would you tell anyone? I wouldn’t.
Tumblr media
So, unlike Miho in Season Zero, who at least had the decency to try to take her Mother to Australia, Joey Wheeler has wisely decided that the 3 other ticket holders will not be the 3 other members of his immediate family. That would have been the most awkward trip between Serenity, his mother he hasn’t really spoken to in 7 years, and his absent father who was written out of the series for being a raging alcoholic. They would have not even made it to the plane.
Instead he’s gonna take the ghost in Yugi’s head and call that an adult (two tickets in one, really). It’s honestly not that bad of a plan, since his only other father figure, Grandpa, is MIA, and his only other, other father figure, Roland, charges like 300 dollars an hour and wants stock options and health insurance.
Tumblr media
And honestly they should have taken Roland because he’s one of their best plane guys.
Tumblr media
So they take the smallest little Amelia Earheart plane in the world, going from Japan to (checks map) India...which 2 times the distance this plane can go and it crashes...which is exactly what would happen if you took a teeny tiny plane over the Himalayan mountains without refueling that thing.
Tumblr media
We call this a magical incident later in the episode, but this is just basic math.
So, fun fact, (and probably why I discuss planes so often on this blog) two of my Grandfathers were pilots (well, three, since my grandmother remarried another pilot), which sounds like a crazy coincidence until you recall that their generation was in WW2 and we just shoved children in planes for 20 years and called that normal.
Anyway, to save on travel costs, my engineer Grandfather built his own plane out of junkyard parts, which, as you can imagine, is a living nightmare, and it was held together by like duct tape and gasoline (which at one time used to be cheap). Tempted God every day that Howls Moving Castle touched the sky.
And while I only know it from photos since I wasn’t exactly born yet, it looked exactly like this plane. So looking at this, all I can think is...yeah...that’s what you get for flying to India in a tin can car. To this day I cannot trust any plane of this size.
So, they climb out of their wreckage virtually unscathed and into familiar Californian territory.
Tumblr media
At least Joey thought about bringing a tent.
It’s interesting how our cast has become so accustomed to this that they’re not even all that shell shocked. It’s just another day in the life.
So next time we shall find out what India has in store for us. Or if we’re even in India...because again...feels a lot like this BG team doesn’t do any research into their landscapes and every place feels a whole lot of the same. But...at least they didn’t put any Arizonan mesas in India.

Pet Sematary by Stephen King
This doctor named Louis moves to a college town in Maine with his wife and two small children. They moved there because he accepted a job running the university health center because he doesn’t like working in hospitals. As they’re moving into the house they meet their elderly neighbor, Jud, who warns them that a lot of animals die on the road that goes right by their house where massive trucks go by regularly. This prompts Louis to get their cat fixed so that he’ll be less inclined to cross the road and risk getting hit. Jud shows the family a path that goes into the woods behind their house and leads to this creepy little pet cemetery that the kids in the town have been using and taking care of for generations. The family is understandably wigged out by this cemetery in their literal backyard and pretty much decide to never go back. Louis goes to his first day of work and has a rough time because a jogger gets hit by a car and dies in the infirmary on his first day of work, which is a major bummer. Louis then has a nightmare where the dead jogger shows up in his house and leads him to the Pet Semetary and when he wakes up, his feet are covered in mud and leaves. On Halloween Louis goes to Jud’s house and saves Jud’s wife, Norma, when she has a heart attack in the kitchen. This leads to Jud feeling indebted to Louis, which ends badly. We find out that Rachel, Louis’s wife, has a morbid fear of death because childhood trauma where her sister died slowly and horribly of spinal meningitis, so Rachel pretty much can’t think or talk about death without going into hysterics. Thanksgiving comes and Louis stays in Maine while his wife and kids fly to Chicago to spend the holiday with her parents. It’s explained that Louis hates his wife’s parents because when they were dating her dad tried to pay him to break up with her. While his wife and kids are away the cat gets hit by a car and dies in Jud’s yard. Jud says “aha! I feel indebted to you and am also being possessed slightly by the evil demon graveyard in your back yard so I’m going to help you bring your cat back to life! As one does” and so Jud leads Louis past the Pet Semetary up onto this big mesa where they bury the cat and the walk there is this whole trippy thing where they hear strange sounds and are surrounded by spooky mist. As advertised the cat comes back to life but he’s weird and gross. A bit later their younger child, Gage, gets hit by a truck and dies. Louis and Rachel are understandably upset and go through the funeral in a daze. There’s a whole scene in the funeral party when Rachel’s parents show up and her dad gets in a fistfight with Louis, we get plenty of gory details about how funeral directors stage bodies to look a bit less dead at the showings because Louis worked for an undertaker as a kid. Louis convinces his wife and daughter to go home with Rachel’s parents so that he can resurrect his son without them knowing, so he can just kill him again if it doesn’t go well. They go but as soon as they get there the daughter has horrible dreams about her dad dying and Rachel decides to go back and see what’s up with her husband. There’s a long description of Louis grave robbing his son’s corpse and then carrying it up to the mesa cemetery, then comes home and goes to sleep. Jud tries to stop him but is put to sleep by the evil semi sentient graveyard. The understanding I have is there’s some evil that exists in the graveyard that possesses the things buried there, but those things are mainly animals so it can’t do much. But when it’s a person, the evil thing can take over and really start doing damage. So the little kid gets resurrected but is evil, and he kills Jud with a scalpel he stole from Louis. Rachel gets home and tries to talk to Jud but gets killed by the evil demon baby. Louis wakes up and figures out what happens, and kills both Church the cat and his evil demon baby son by injecting them with something. He then takes his wife’s corpse and sets Jud’s house on fire. He takes Rachel’s corpse up to the cemetery and buries her. The book ends with the evil demon thing possessing Rachel’s corpse as it approaches Louis from behind. It’s heavily implies that it kills him and might go on to track down and kill their daughter, who is still with her grandparents.

Parallel Forces
an “adrian teams up with barney, actually” tale.
Seven hours had been and gone. When? Adrian couldn’t say. Every minute seemed like the same seven hours over and over again. A sky torn asunder by dimensional rifts and incomprehensible contraptions, the horizon blurry with the rush of a broken humvee’s wheels over uneven, wild terrain. The steering shook and jumped violently beneath his hands whenever he guided the big vehicle over a layer of rocks instead of sand or baked dirt. Sometimes, the headlights would illuminate some kind of creature, and in a fit, he’d run right over it. To his credit, the person riding shotgun usually confirmed it as an alien.
Aliens. God, what a fucking joke. How many days have passed since his life was normal? The call to action was so crisp and clean in his mind. Up and at’em, soldier, you’ve got to storm the goddamn crazy factory halfway to the core of the earth some ten miles south of your shitty Marine base. Then somewhere between point A, B, and D, you missed your Osprey Express and had to hoof it on your own because the guys couldn’t wait.
Perhaps the best outcome, in the end, but it all started with aliens.
And maybe some mystery man in an orange suit, but he never saw the guy, and quite frankly, no longer cared.
“Adrian! Adrian, watch the goddamn road!” Barney barks, grabbing the wheel out from beneath his hands. “Jesus fucking Christ, man. Let me take point!”
It takes all of his concentration to ease on the gas. The Humvee sputters and coughs as it winds down from its abuse, its dusty trail slowly engulfing it. He blindly slams the thing into park before popping open the door and falling out. To his surprise, there’s someone there to catch him.
“You’ve done plenty, young man,” the person says. Rosenberg, Adrian’s exhausted brain supplies. “Get in the back, now. Mind the child, mind the child.”
He can’t protest against being manhandled into the back of the Humvee. His body, battle kit and all, is shoved roughly into place between at least two other bodies. He can’t bring himself to look at them, instead staring straight ahead into the driver’s cab. Barney is still settling into the driver’s seat.
“Barney,” Adrian says roughly, patting the man’s shoulder. “Hold on. Take this, man.”
Adrian reaches into a pocket on his vest, withdrawing a wrinkled parcel. He peels back the plastic to reveal a stack of tiny tablets, though his hands shake so badly trying to claw out just one that he nearly drops them all. Finally, he gets one between his thumb and index finger.
“Gonna need it. Keeps you up,” Adrian says, thrusting the pill over Barney’s shoulder.
“The hell is this?” Barney snaps, turning to look at him. The tablet sits in the center of his palm.
“Anti-fatigue shit,” Adrian replies. “Don’t tell me you don’t need it, fucker.”
Rough language and aggression is his forte. Exhaustion and suspended nerves makes it easy to play it up even further. He maintains bloodshot eye contact with the other man until he can detect his will slide away.
“Soldier shit,” Barney mutters. He swallows the pill dry before turning away.
Adrian lets himself go limp against the seat. He knows he won’t be able to sleep, so he contents himself with tipping his head back and staring up at the ceiling. Something gnaws at the back of his mind, but trying to parse it out is-- impossible.
The humvee coughs as, once again, it’s eased back into the midnight desert.
-
Their camp is a rough one. Food is eaten cold because a fire might attract things worse than headcrabs and animaloid zombies. Time is a blur, but Barney’s fairly certain that it’s been almost a week since they beat it out of Black Mesa. Long since they crossed the border, long since they saw the end of seven hours, and real short since the last time they saw a UFO skating the skies high above.
A real smooth flier, whatever the aircraft was. If not for blotting out the moon, they wouldn’t have saw it at all.
Barney grips the shotgun between his hands. Eight shells loaded, one in the chamber. Eyes peeled wide to keep watch, but there’s a shakiness afflicting his fingers and an erratic heartbeat in his ears. How many days has he been awake?
How many days was it that a man could be awake without going insane? Three? Four?
Sleep, says Rosenberg. Let us take the load, coaxes Vance.
But he’s already seen far too much to release what little control he has. With Adrian out cold for-- how long, how long-- there wasn’t much of an alternative. Not in his foggy, wired brain. He’d die before letting the team go unguarded.
Even if it meant that little Alyx feared the two armoured men for their bloodshot eyes and tenterhook control.
Until something gave, Barney saw no other alternative.

What au is winged Gordon from?
That would be "Operation: Help Bubby and Gordon Escape Black Mesa"
It works with a wing au concept I actually have used for au in other fandoms before? But the whole concept is centered around the idea that people used to frequently be born with wings until those without them grew jealous and basically chased them off until it was rare to see anyone with wings anymore?
And those who do have then have the ability to hide them using a special kind of magic. On top of this they also tend to have one other magic ability they're able to use.
Anyway as a way to harness the power the winged had and also bring them back from "near extinction" Black Mesa starts this program in "Creating" them using various dna from both winged and alien alike.
Gordon is one winged subject made by Black mesa who managed to escape as a child after the scientist taking care of him went rogue. He gets re-caught by them later on when working there (unknown to them that hes the missing subject) and having to escape a dire situation. His wings are that of a Red-Winged Black Bird! He can use and read the sweetvoice.
And then Bubby is a wing subject super rushed in the process of making who didn't quite get as much time as Gordon to stabilize so hes kinda not nearly as perfect as Gordon is. Didn't get a childhood. Has uncontrollable Pyrokinesis, and can read the sweetvoice. His wings are that of a African Gray Parrot.
I also have just a standard Half Life version of the au that kinda follows the same idea, and I'll probably use that one a lot more in the long run, but the hlvrai idea is a fun concept too!

Hivemind AU Masterpost
Because I have a bad habit of making things and then developing things around them, I made this.
The Hivemind AU is a Half Life AU based during and right after the Resonance Cascade. Though, it does use alot of things in HLVRAI. Mainly the sweet voice.
First off, the storyline in the Ask Blog can be read chronologically Here, and the info on my main blog Here. And finally the written ref of what they look like can be found Here.
Good? Good.
The Hivemind AU follows a Hivemind originally from Xen.
A while back, Black Mesa found a Hive of humanoid looking creatures that protected their hives with their lives. Black Mesa being Black Mesa decided to exploit the hive. They took a few of the Hive’s Cocoons, and brought them back to Black Mesa.
The first cocoons failed from the bad environment, but the first one that did survive, was given the tag B.CALHOUN. It was originally a keyboard mash from a frustrated scientist because that Calhoun died quickly, but it stuck.
And so what was once just a race named after a few numbers, the Calhoun race was named.
And yes, the Calhouns are based off the Barney guards.
Eventually, they had a Calhoun live long enough to help another freshly hatched Calhoun, and it quickly spiraled from there. And by the time the ResCa happened, they had somewhere between 255-400 healthy Calhouns living in Black Mesa.
Black Mesa selectively “bred” the Calhouns until they looked human. They still have too bright eyes and too sharp teeth though.
Will get back to the reason why bred is in quotes in a bit.
All of the Calhouns are apart of a Hivemind, thus where the AU name came from. In the Hivemind, theres two types of Calhouns. The Quiet Ones, and the Loud Ones.
The Quiet Ones are the ones that are still in the Cocoons, there, but still being formed.
The Loud Ones are the ones that arent in the Cocoons. Lively, able to move, and able to talk.
Normally, the moment the Quiet Ones are ready to leave their Cocoons, the Loud Ones would give them a voice in the Hivemind and meet them outside their Cocoons.
But because of Black Mesa, they couldnt do that. So, there were hundreds of fully formed Calhouns asleep in their Cocoons. Which, of course pained the entire Hive because they couldnt help relax the Hive.
And Yes! We’re finally getting to the Sweet Voice part!
To avoid having to much stress on the Hive and Hivemind, the Calhoun’s would pump their strong emotions into the Hivemind, and then those emotions would be spread throughout the entire Hive.
And when there was a build up of emotions, they would expel the emotions into floaty little glowing colored balls. The expelling of the emotions sounds alot like humming or singing.
And now, we can get back to the reason bred was in quotes.
See, Calhouns don’t really breed, the reproduce asexually. With enough feelings of love, care, and the need to protect, they can use the sweet voice to make more Cocoons. And said Cocoons when complete and hardened, look alot like a glittery nightsky. And inside the Cocoons, are what is basically carbonated nutrients.
And when the newly hatched Calhoun comes out, theyre very fragile, the size of a small child, and need to be taken care of by another Calhoun. But after they're cleaned up, Black Mesa takes the baby Calhoun, cuts off their tail, the only thing they couldn't breed out, and takes them away to be trained. Aka how to use gun, hand to hand combat, and suppression of instincts. After a week, the Baby is fully grown and is put into the main facility.
But there’s a catch to be able to make cocoons. For the correct mix of sweet voice needed for cocoon making to be expelled, the Calhoun expelling it needs to feel completely safe, have enough food and room.
And since the Calhouns in Black Mesa are in Black Mesa, almost the entire hive does not feel safe.
So, what Black Mesa did was scoop up one or two Calhouns from each batch, and bring them somewhere else where they could be “educated” to not tell the rest of the Hive how new Calhouns are created, and given what would basically be heaven for any Calhoun.
And thats how the Hive is sustained.
Oh, and one more thing. Each Calhoun though connected to the Hive, can fully think, act, and talk on their own accord. They all have their own personalities, but they were all suppressed from acting on them because of Black Mesa.
In the Hivemind, they can communicate. Talk, Coordinate, and Plan. Though they mostly use it to broadcast feelings as using it to talk is a bit hard for them. Every Calhoun can use the Hivemind, and yes even the Quiet Ones.
But theyre called Quiet Ones because they dont use it to talk, or broadcast feelings. They just, hum. Like every Calhoun does in their sleep.
Some have voices that are louder then the others, and because of Black Mesa’s influence, those natural leaders were made to seem bad, and the entire hive will scold the “offending” Calhoun if they talk over anyone in the Hivemind.
If the offending Calhoun does it too often, the Hive will decide to Exile the Calhoun. To be exiled all the Calhoun has to do is go against the Hive’s rules a few too many times.
Exiling basically entails being cut off from the Hive and being left to flounder. The Entire Hive thinks its an immediate death sentence because each time they Exiled someone, Black Mesa would kill off the Offending Calhoun and let another find their body.
A very effective fear strategy.
And the reason Black Mesa is aware of the Louder Ones, is because they have access to the Hivemind.
With the help of SCIENCE! they were able to connect to the Hivemind, see what theyre thinking about, and see what theyre planning.
And because it wouldn’t Black Mesa if they didn’t experiment, they used human DNA and created two more hives.
Those Hives are officially known as E.Vance and I.Kleiner
Those two half human hives dont rely on their Hiveminds, and in fact they normally dislike their Hiveminds. Compared to the Calhoun’s love and need to protect their Hivemind, its a major difference.
Now, I think thats enough backstory. Lets get to the ResCa.
When the ResCa happened, half of the Hive was wiped. The Quiet Ones and the ones that knew how to make more cocoons were killed immediately by either Xen creatures, or by the roofs falling in on them.
The Hive’s numbers continued to be whittled down until only 5 remained.
Those five immediately went for eachother, and grouped up. It was frankly traumtising for them. They went from a loud bustling Hive of hundreds, to a quiet small hive of 5.
These 5, are the center of the AU. And theyre the ones the story follows.
Not to mention, one of them was severely injured. But with the help of a Black Mesa’s magical medkits, the injured Calhoun was brought back to mostly full health.
The 5 surviving Calhouns names and any injures are the following: Blueshift - B.Calhoun-29 Cut on left Cheek Bold - B.Calhoun-118 Three Scars over Left Eye Bracing - B.Calhoun-169 Bard - B.Calhoun-192 Bubbles - B.Calhoun-247 Limp and right Eye Gone
I’ve probably missed some info, as most of this was developed via asks (coughthanks@liliflower137cough)
But i’ll try to update this as much as possible.
Still, I strongly recommend going through either the ask blog or my main blog Hivemind AU tag. Though, there is spoilers on my main blog about the Ask Blog story line.
And one more thing, go check out @thelambdalocator, They helped a lot and are artists behind the Icons.

Bob Meehan - Times Advocate, Wednesday November 14, 1984
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two East County couples say they have "lost" their daughters to a controversial Escondido-area drug-treatment program which they claim tries to alienate children from their families.
Don and Joyce Ceplenski of La Mesa said Tuesday they decided to speak out about their family situation because they have lost contact with their 19-year-old daughter, Jill, a former drug addict who worked at SLIC (Sober Live-In Center) Ranch. They fear they may also lose touch with their 17-year-old daughter, Tracy, who was treated at SLIC in 1983.
The second couple, Scott and Michelle Williams of El Cajon, said a similar fate befell their family. Their 17-year-old daughter, Deana, was treated at SLIC Ranch in February and has not returned home.
The couples say they also want to counter upbeat claims about other children who have been treated at SLIC Ranch. The praise for the center has come in recent weeks from parents who have rallied around the program's attempt to relocate in Valley Center.
Robert Meehan, director of SLIC Ranch, said the two families represent a small faction of those whose children have been treated at the ranch. He said most of the young clients return home after their experience at SLIC.
"Some families take longer (to reunite) than others," he said. "Very few take this kind of time."
"I don't want to hurt these people, but they are trying to hurt a program that is helping more people than any other program," Meehan said.
Meehan, a former drug addict and alcoholic, said parents must be willing to work closely with their children in order for them to recover from their addictions, Meehan said. Often, they must also enter counseling on their own. SLIC does not provide parent counseling. Meehan, who charges $4,000a month for youngsters to stay SLIC, said he would have to boost his fee in order to include counseling for families.
See SLIC, Page B2
However, Meehan said he urged the Ceplenskis to attend parent counseling sessions at Freeway, a self-help drug treatment program which Meehan helped found and which is closely associated with SLIC Ranch. The couple didn't do that, he said.
"The work really has to happen at home," Meehan added.
He called the Celpenski's allegations "flat-out lies from some people who somehow feel I have stolen their daughter."
The Ceplenskis are "paranoid," Meehan said. "Other families would be tickled pink (to have their child off drugs)," he said.
Ceplenski, a San Diego attorney, claims that Meehan commands undue influence over his young, vulnerable charges. Often, he added, Meehan and other workers at SLIC Ranch and Freeway advise the youngsters to stay away from their families and drop out of school. Ceplenski said he is worried that the youngsters are captured by Meehan's self-admitted charisma.
"They do get them off drugs and alcohol. But this is an addiction that is much worse than drugs and alcohol," said Ceplenski, who said he also owes Meehan $5,000 for treating his daughter.
Meehan admits he has great influence over his young clients, but he says he uses it to an advantage.
"Yeah, it scares me," Meehan told the Times-Advocate in an interview this summer. "You get into a real guru (situation). This is where cults can begin."
Jill Ceplenski, who began working as a counselor for Freeway after leaving SLIC Ranch, disputed her parents' claim, saying she alone made the decision to separate from her family.
"My parents and I don't get along," she said. "In no way have they (Meehan and other SLIC workers) ever said not to see my family. It was my decision to leave."
Jill was treated by Meehan in early 1982 at Center City Hospital in San Diego, where she had sought help for her dependence on alcohol and amphetamines, also known as speed. Meehan worked briefly for the hospital, which is now Harbor-view Hospital, helping officials there establish a drug-abuse program.
Meehan in 1972 founded the Palmer Drug Abuse Program in Houston. The program has had 30,000 participants, Meehan said. Palmer drew national publicity in the late 1970s, when actress Carol Burnett sent her daughter, Carrie Hamilton, there for treatment.
Meehan's claims that Palmer has a cure rate of 75 percent to 80 percent also attracted some intense scrutiny. The center was featured in January 1980 on CBS' "60 Minutes" TV program. According to a transcript of the broadcast, Meehan conceded that he did not have documentation to back up his vaunted success rate.
Following the "60 Minutes" broadcast, Meehan left Palmer and moved to San Diego, where he founded SLIC in 1982.
Meehan is attempting to move the program to Valley Center because it is in violation of county zoning ordinances at its present site near Lake Wohlford.
The center also has been operating without an appropriate state license. State officials have threatened to shut down the center unless it qualifies for a so-called residential license. SLIC officials have yet to apply for the license, according to the San Diego office of the state's Community Care Licensing Division.
To obtain a license, the center would have to meet fire safety standards, provide a medical checkup for new clients and keep records of client's progress. The center would also have to refrain from mixing clients younger than 18 with those older, as it does now.
Many of the ranch's clients are referred by Freeway, which has branches in some of the most affluent communities of the county including Coronado, Point Loma, Solana Beach and Fallbrook.
The youngsters live at the ranch, but spend most of their days in counseling sessions at an Escondido home. And in the evenings and on weekends, the youngsters attend group-counseling sessions at Freeway.
After 30 days of intensive counseling at SLIC, virtually all his clients are drug-free, Meehan said. However, some are not ready to return to their homes and schools, where pressures may drive them back to drugs, he said.
Those youngsters are referred to families supportive of Freeway's counseling style, Meehan said. While staying with the families, the youngsters regularly attend Freeway meetings.
Scott Williams said his daughter, Deanna, is living with a "Freeway family" in San Diego. Several attempts to have Deanna return home have been fruitless.
"She says she's not at the point in the program where she could even think of coming home," said Williams, a postal worker, who says he still owes Meehan $5,000 for the seven weeks his daughter spent at SLIC Ranch.
Williams said he attended Freeway's parent group religiously for eight months, hoping that it would help reunite him with his daughter. In addition to ignoring her family, Williams said his daughter has also cut herself off from her friends.
"Their job is to get kids off drugs and make them a useful part of society," Williams said. "All they do is get them off drugs. My daughter is not part of society. She is part of Freeway's society. We were a closer family when she was on drugs."
Not all families are displeased with SLIC's program. At a recent meeting with county officials, who were considering SLIC's relocation request, several families whose children were treated at the center praised Meehan.
Jamie Conway, the teenage son of comedian Tim Conway, said he stopped using drugs after being treated at SLIC. Young Conway also played a tape from his father, lauding Meehan and SLIC.
The Ceplenskis and the Williams plan to voice their concerns about SLIC's practices at a public meeting Monday in Valley Center, where the local planning group will consider SLIC's request to move into their community.

Dear Pre-K Families,
Welcome to Creative Minds Tutor at Sta. Mesa! We are going to spend a wonderful year together. My name is Jonathan Viray. I spent over 10 years working in Early Childhood Education with children from 6 weeks through 8 years old. Besides my time in the classroom, I have been an Assistant Director of a NAEYC accredited child care center. I have degrees in Early Childhood Education from Polytechnic University and a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from University of the Philippines. I’m not yet married,
I feel that my true passion is working with Pre-K age children. I love to promote self-help skills and empower the children to believe in themselves. I work with the children in varying situations including large group, small groups, and individually. I believe that providing the right learning is essential for this age because it fosters independence and creativity. Learning centers allow the students to choose where they “play” and to freely explore the learning activities provided for them at their developmental level. I assess the students quarterly on basic Pre-K skills but continue to push the students, teaching and assessing beyond the basic Pre-K curriculum. My motto is that I want your child overly prepared for Kindergarten.
I work very hard to optimize learning through team teaching with my Assistant, Ms. Hiraya. She works with the children daily and follows the students to their other classes like related arts, world language, and lunch. We work to create the best learning environment for your child that fosters creative thinking, problem solving, and the imagination. I look forward to getting to know your child and family this year. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me or call. My email address is [email protected] and the school number is 09511276784. Thank you in advance for your help this year and I look forward to a great school year.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Viray

This is the story of how a little bird changed my life.
earlier this week I was looking up the meaning of a couple flowers for a project i’m working on. that’s when I stumbled across the meaning of Daisies. I read through it and thought of my little cockatiel at home. then I just started bawling.
“ The daisy represents innocence, new beginnings, ans a true/pure love for someone or something....The daisy’s message is, ultimately, one of hope and renewal.in sending daises the sender hopes the viewer will see the world as they once did as a child.”
I got my cockatiel a little over 10 years ago. I was 11 years old and honestly very depressed. I was being bullied at school and was being abused at my dads house.  I didn’t have any friends, I had no one.I felt completely alone. I had a breakdown at school and was suicidal. My parents were very worried and wanted to get me help. I talked to the school psychologist and started to get things sorted out (things at school were getting better, I moved classes and the group of girls who had been hurting and harassing me for the past few years were suspended. I told them what was happening with my step-mom  and my parents agreed that I wasn’t to be around her anymore.) things were better but the damage was done. I hated myself. I had no clue how to be around other kids or make friends. I had been isolated for so long that I didn’t know where to start. I was still very alone. True the abuse stopped and things were better. But I was still depressed. They talked about medication but wanted to try something first. An emotional support animal ...but they didn’t call them that yet. If I couldn’t make people friends yet, what about an animal friend. I loved animals and my parents were planning on getting a dog. Then my parents decided that since they traveled a lot and both worked. That probably wasn’t the best idea (I also lived with my dad part of the time.)
What about a bird? Specifically a parakeet?. I was ecstatic! I loved bird watching and would spend hours at the riparian park with field guides and binoculars. I did this very weekend, while my mom was out running errands. She would pick me up and I would just spend the next half hour rambling on about every type of bird and reptile I saw. So It was decided. It was my 11th birthday. We went to a exotic bird store in mesa, looking for a hand fed parakeet. I had done all the research, I had saved my money to have a good set up and proper food. We walked in and talked to the owner about what we were looking for and if she had any hand-fed blue parakeets available. She took one look at me and said “ a parakeet? For this little sweetheart? Na those things are like tiny pitbulls! Let me show ya something.” she went to the back and came back with this little cockatiel on her hand “ I hand fed this girl myself, she’s a beautiful pearl and sweetest one of the bunch. Here, ask her to step up” and this baby cockatiel stepped up on my hand no problem. We took her home and I named her Daisy. We returned all the parakeet stuff. Got a big cast iron cage for her and that’s when my life started to change.
Now of course she didn’t change everything. But she became my best friend. I wasn’t alone anymore. She taught me how to be patient and let her come to me. To love her even if she didn’t show affection the way that was expected. I could understand that. After all I was on the autism spectrum. I didn’t talk the way others did, I was very quiet and shy. I hated people touching me. I would get upset and just didn’t know why. She didn’t want to be touched but just wanted to be with you. She would listen to me ramble on about whatever thing I was obsessed with. She didn’t care as long as she was with/near me. She didn’t care if I was crying and upset over something that didn’t make sense. She would just be happily preening and grinding her beak.
My life was changing for the better and now I had a friend. I was happier and more confident. I started volunteering at my local bird rescue and environmental education center. I would got to events. I was making friends who liked the same things as me. I got to high school I did well and eventually got to college. I served a successful mission, im half way to getting my degree in biology. I have some good and close friends. As well as 2 jobs. One with special needs kids and one at a homeless shelter. It all started with a little bird named daisy.
