"That’s not an answer, baby.” His fingers increased their pace, making me light-headed. “Do you want me to get you off and hold you until you fall asleep?” His other hand rose to my breast, teasing my nipple. “Or do you want me to claim it with my cock?” So commanding and yet so fucking thoughtful. Cherishing me, ravishing me. He was everything I needed. Everything my body craved and my heart had been missing." - The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas Who are you going to bring to your sister wedding if you're single? Well, my answer is: I will bring one of my gay friends simply because they are cuter, sexier and lovable. My gay friends will also treat me lovingly by holding my hands and showing some affection. Overall, they are less hairy and smell better than any normal guys. Yet Catalina is different! Our hispanic lady tells a small white lie about her "caliente" American boyfriend. So what's next? Well, it will lead you to a hate-love Disney-alike story wrapped in a modern and American dream-kindda-life. Some readers may suffer throughtout the story to have the hero saying. "I want to feel you milking me, baby“ while using a (most likely) expired condom. I bought an extra copy of this book for Bu Jegeg @r_ismiii thinking that as we have such a chaotic love life - at least, we will experience such a joyful modern-Mills-and-Boons without the steamy sexy scenes at the sperm soaking department with a Sheikh or a CEO. Ah, she's too busy (or lazy) in finishing the book LOL! Super cheesy, sweet and the story line is so predictable but well, at least it's a relaxing quick read. I have two poems published in the second issue of Barrio Beat, "Alnitak" and "Mintaka." They are two of the seven brightest stars that are found in the constellation of Orion. They are part of a seven poem sequence, "Swimming With A Comet."

Online Reading Session #6: Gloria Anzaldúa “Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza”, 29 October 2020
29 October 2020, 18:00 h (GMT +1, Berlin time), via Zoom
In this session, Mayra Bottaro will introduce chapter 1 and 7 of the book "Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza" by Gloria Anzaldúa, that addresses topics such as Chicano culture, identity, race, gender and colonialism.
Abstract of the book:
Rooted in Gloria Anzaldúa's experience as a Chicana, a lesbian, an activist, and a writer, the essays and poems in this volume profoundly challenged, and continue to challenge, how we think about identity. "Borderlands/La Frontera" remaps our understanding of what a "border" is, presenting it not as a simple divide between here and there, us and them, but as a psychic, social, and cultural terrain that we inhabit, and that inhabits all of us.
The book is divided into two parts. The first, "Crossing Borders", is written mostly in prose, and moves between memoir and critical theory, interspersed occasionally with poetry and quotations from other thinkers, poets, and singers. Anzaldúa also switches between Spanish and English, and between more casual and "academic" ways of writing. The second part, "Un Agitado Viento/Ehécatl, The Wind", is entirely poetry.
Additional reading material:
Édouard Glissant "Poetics of Relation", University of Michigan Press, 1997 "Creolizations", p.89; "Distancing, Determining", pp. 141-157
MAYRA BOTTARO received her PhD in Hispanic Languages and Literatures from UC Berkeley. She is assistant Professor at the University of Oregon and currently co-directs the Nineteenth Century Section of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA). Her book "Chronopolitics. New Media, Periodicity and Seriality in the Hispanic Atlantic, 1750-1880" (forthcoming in 2021) examines the links between material culture, media, and temporality and identifies a series of changes in the understanding of time and the notion of futurity, showing how the aesthetics of seriality became embedded within epistemological changes. She is currently working on her second monograph, "Scrambled Messages: Telegraphic Poetics and the New Atlantic Language", at the intersection of materialities of new media, theories of language, poetics and artistic experimental practices, and on a Digital Humanities project "Archivo Organizado y Centralizado de Rubén Darío" at Universidad Nacional Tres de Febrero (UNTREF), Argentina.
The Zoom access link, ID code and password will be sent via e-mail.
The online reading session is free of charge and will be held in English. We recommend to read the texts before the meeting.
Limited number of spaces available. Registration required.

For Hispanic Heritage Month, I decided to read the coming-of-age classic The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. Written in a series of vignettes, readers get a look at a year of Esperanza’s life on Mango Street, a poor neighborhood in Chicago. I like page breaks because they give me points where I can stop. In this case, because of the format, I couldn’t get into the flow of the book. This doesn’t take away from the story’s poignancy. Esperanza’s emerging adolescence and encounters with men are jarring and uncomfortable, which reflects the harsh realizations young women experience when it comes to romance and sexuality. Plus, Esperanza’s astute observations reflect her growth as a writer. For instance, “No Speak English” reveals the struggles with assimilation and identity through language and how the loss of one’s language from “home” signifies a loss of culture. Overall, I found passages and the individual vignettes more moving than the book as a whole. I would still recommend reading this if you haven’t yet. As @postgradreads said to me, you can get something out of it no matter what age. Have you read this? Let me know your thoughts. What are your favorite quotes? (Thanks to my husband for being the hand model for this pic.) . . . #readtmc #thehouseonmangostreet #sandracisneros #literature #hispanicheritagemonth #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #booksofinstagram #igreads #bookreview #diversebooks #chicanoliterature #asianamericanreaders #diversifybookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/BoASlnrFbr3/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=10n4yb78oheap

'The Jewel of Aztlán' Step Off! Radio: The Chicano Park Museum Episode with Lucas Cruz
Lucas Cruz, Chairman of the Chicano Park Steering Committee joins Step Off! Radio to talk about the @chicanopark_mus, the struggle to make the museum a reality, and what the museum means to the residents of Barrio Logan.
Since the rise of the Chicano Movement in the late 60s, Chicano artists have used a variety of mediums to express historical counter-narratives, encourage political activism, and educate communities. Fifty-three years ago on April 22, 1970, in San Diego, California the residents of Logan Heights, alongside a coalition comprised of hundreds of students, community activists, Brown Berets, and…
