Fuck me, Fuck The Algorithm is fucking fucked-up …
… in a fucking good way, obviously.
Eclectic is an over used term in music reviews: usually merely indicating that a country/Americana act strays occasionally into CSNY territory, or a blues outfit manage at least once to leaven their relentless Chicago dumpa-dumpa-dumpa-dumpa with a splash of NOLA syncopation …
And there’s nothing wrong with either of those, but in the eight tracks of manic, maniacal, genre-mangling mash-ups of Fuck The Algorithm Mango Thomas redefines ‘eclectic’ as an ADHD chameleon on acid in a kaleidoscope during a laser-strobe light-show.
The opening track alone, Pjunkle, careens between a blizzard of high-speed machine drum, guitar and incandescently furious growled vox, and Eastern-spiced spacey electronica interlaced with lithe bass lines, burbling synths and melodic harmonised guitar… via a metal-cum-drum’n’bass maelstrom. Oh yeah, plus a closing ferocious excoriation of the www.
Musically that pretty much sets the template (of there being no template) for what comes after: a relentlessly-grinding deconstructed boogie opens Punk Bitch, breaking down to a beats-and-Parklife-on-steroids rap interspersed with fusiony guitar squiggles and playfully venomous music-hall psychedelia; a surprisingly stonery laid-back late-night jazz passage from electric piano and loose-limbed drums gives way first to minimalist jamband death metal twin-guitar lines, then a double-speed pogoing anthem, before a hanging close reprise of the ‘stoner jazz’ piano…
Hypnotically deep trancefloor bass, bubbling marimba-like accents and textured string synths underpin the increasingly urgent mantra of Whaddya Want, which canters (via some nice 80s samples and a Moroderesque hook) into a wall of melodic prog-fusion guitar and tricksy timings, ending in a staccato, punchy dead-stop.
Headlock almost convinces you it’s just the one thing: the complex percussive techno banger runs nearly half its 4-plus minutes with no more quirks beyond a bit of rapping and an occasional (very accomplished) noodling fretless bass… until that bass line returns in a full-on rendition augmented with guitar and increasingly abandoned multi-voice wordless “Na, na, na-na”s sounding like a terrace-chant Bond theme, rising to a wild peak.
As with Mango Thomas Goes De.EP his previous release, Fuck The Algorithm includes a trio of mini-tracks: Did You Mean’s spoken voice/SFX humorous rant against the Siri-tyranny of patronising suggestions; #fuckthealgorithm, a reprise of the polemic from Pjunkle set over a rather Hawkindish interstellar overdrive start-up; and Frosty Mornings, which actually does stick to its single groove of smoothly-swaying soully electric piano, heartbeat pulse rhythms and lush synth strings (although the swirling modulation, panning and phasing add an unexpected off-kilter spacey edge).
By seven tracks in, we’re all Mango Thomas veterans now, so Algorithms’ light and airy acoustic picking and mellow folky troubadour vox-led ‘love song’ aren’t fooling anybody… sure enough, the expected Oi-meets-Nu-Metal explosion of syn-drum and gutsy guitar heralds a blokey belted-out “We’re all algorithms” denunciation of the foregoing syrupy delusions, topped with very Frippish atonal guitar and a deconstructed brassy jazz-funk finale.
Now, this might all sound like a recipe for disaster, or at least a cacophonous dog’s dinner, and in the hands of someone less adept it could well be... but Mango Thomas pulls the feat off with considerable aplomb. Fuck The Algorithm is one of a handful of home-grown albums that has had me grooving and grinning simultaneously and, even more rare, laughing out loud at its invention, audacity and sheer joyous insanity. It’s fucking brilliant!
Oh yeah, almost forgot…

Since my dad died last summer, I’ve been having to adjust from cooking for three people down to cooking for just two, my youngest brother and I. As much as we love lasagna, baking an entire pan of it was usually waaaaay too much for even three people, much less two. So a few months back I started randomly googling to try and find a good solution to the problem, and immediately tripped over the Chicago Metallic Trio Pan, pictured above. They market it towards, among other things, being able to make three different lasagnas at once, useful if you have a vegetarian or picky eater or whatever to provide for.
One third of a lasagna is actually pretty much perfect for just two people; enough to get a meal and leftovers out of, unless you’re really big eaters. So I eventually decided to buy one; it arrived about a month ago.
My first few things to cook in it were actually big batches of quick breads, like banana bread and gingerbread. It worked out well for those; I’d freeze one loaf of it and leave the other two out in an extra large ziplock bag. We’d typically eat the first loaf within a day or two, so no real point in putting the second in the freezer.
This past weekend I finally had enough room free in the freezer to try making a pan of lasagna and freezing it uncooked. I didn’t bother with experimenting with making different lasagnas, just assembled it all and froze it. I was using those noodles you don’t need to cook before using, but because I’m forever paranoid about the top noodles drying out - and them being easier to work with, imho, when not hard and brittle - I half-cooked them before assembly. And I did make sure to make a very moist lasagna - it used up 4 cups of homemade meat sauce plus an entire jar of Classico tomato and basil sauce - both to make sure the layers would stick together well and that there’d be sufficient moisture for the noodles to absorb while cooking. Covered the pan with foil, stuck it in the freezer.
Turned the logs of lasagna out today; had to let the pan sit in a couple inches of warm water in the sink for 30-40 seconds, then place it upside-down on a cookie sheet and give it a couple hard thumps on the counter before they released. Wrapped two and returned them to the freezer, while the third went back into the centre channel. Put about 1/2″ of water in the two side channels - I don’t like heating empty pans, it’s rarely good for them - covered loosly with foil, and baked at 300F for 1.5 hours, then removed foil and upped the oven to 375F. Checked after half an hour and the top was nicely browned, while my instant read thermometre said the inside was far from frozen, so out it came.
The couple of cons of the pan I can think of? First, finding out where the heck to store something that large in the kitchen. It’s ended up living on top of the fridge in a clear plastic bag because it won’t really fit anywhere else. Second, having enough room free in the freezer; I’d meant to make that lasagna a week ago, and then my brother brought home groceries that included a bunch of frozen stuff, and I was right back to needing to use some stuff up before I could fit it in (and yes, I’m talking about a chest freezer, not a fridge freezer).
Overall I am very happy with this pan. I am patting myself on the back for buying it. Good decision, past-me.

My family's beloved 16-year-old Siamese cat, Webley, died in my arms last year. He'd been a sleek fat kitty before he got ill, but he'd lost weight and lost weight till he was little more than a bedraggled shadow. At the end he could barely lift his head, and then the vet gave him the shot and he couldn't lift his head at all. I was scratching his ears as I'd so often done before, and suddenly they dropped, and whatever I was petting wasn't Webley anymore. It's one of the worst memories of my life.
I've been thinking about Webley a lot while listening to the new Fire-Toolz album, Rainbow Bridge, which comes out May 8 on local label Hausu Mountain. Angel Marcloid, a Chicago musician who records as Fire-Toolz (as well as under several other names), made Rainbow Bridge about her 16-year-old cat, Breakfast, also a Siamese, who died in December 2018. The album is an idiosyncratic collage of guttural death-metal roars, electronic bleeps, and vaporwave ambience. Bleak, sweet, and quietly unflinching, it slides back and forth between two emotional poles: one boils with rage and grief, while the other is steeped in a comforting lyricism as gentle as a cat rubbing its chin against your hand. "It's been a while, but I think about her every day," Marcloid says. "I still have moments where I feel her close and I just cry a whole bunch. I've got her ashes two feet from me right now. I have a tattoo of her on my chest. So yeah, I'm happy to honor her in my music."
From as early as she can remember, Marcloid says, music made her feel things "that are just so abstract and visceral and hard to put your finger on." She was born near Annapolis in 1984 to a music-loving family; her parents constantly played CDs of hair metal, the Beatles, and her all-time favorite band, Rush. Marcloid started making little drum sets out of pots and pans almost as soon as she could walk.
Her first public performance was when she was seven. Her parents knew a local bar band, and she sat in with them to play drums on a cover of the Black Crowes' "Hard to Handle."
"This is a smoky bar, women showing their boobs and stuff—it was not an environment for kids!" Marcloid says. "But I sat down with the drum kit and we played the songs, and they were just amazed. They were looking back at me while we were playing, like, 'Holy shit! This kid's actually keeping time!' I'll never forget walking off that stage, and all these drunk, smelly adults cheering me on, and a couple of people just gave me money. 'You're awesome, kid! Here's 20 dollars!'"
Marcloid soon taught herself to play guitar and bass too, and her musical interests expanded. As a child she had a formative late-night exposure to Morbid Angel's 1993 video for "Rapture" via MTV's Headbangers Ball, and soon she was also listening to jazz and electronica. She performed in several short-lived bands, and in the late 2000s she launched her own label, also called Rainbow Bridge. Through it Marcloid released cassettes and CDs by other musicians, as well as a blizzard of her own music under various names—including ambient acoustic music as the Human Excuse, punky dream pop with the trio Shadow Government, and electroacoustic noise as Water Bullet.
Marcloid came to Chicago in 2012 to move in with a girlfriend, who owned several cats and had just adopted Breakfast. Like most Siamese, Marcloid says, Breakfast "has always been a little strange." She was neurotic and disliked the other cats, and she never really warmed up to Marcloid's partner. In fact she only had one clear favorite. "She took to me immediately," Marcloid says, "and always wanted to be on me and just wanted to spend all her time with me." When Marcloid and her partner split up, there was no question who Breakfast would go with. The kitty ended up spending most of her life in Marcloid's bedroom to avoid other cats. "The rest of the house was just scary for her. There were too many other cat smells," Marcloid says.
"On the one hand, it may seem weird or maybe even borderline cruel to keep a cat in a single bedroom for their entire lives. But that's what she wanted; she was happy."
Marcloid has featured Breakfast in tracks throughout her oeuvre. "Spirit Spit" from the 2017 album Drip Mental (Hausu Mountain), for example, is a short wordless suite in which Marcloid imagines the usually shy Breakfast grown adventurous enough to go exploring in the house during a storm. The track opens with Breakfast engaging in some Siamese vocalizing and squawking, with thunder in the background. The rest of the narrative unfolds through auditory cues. "She comes down to the basement and turns on her ancient computer, which dials in to AOL," Marcloid explains. "Then she puts on a Telepath CD, which is a vaporwave artist that I absolutely love. You can hear the CD drive opening, you can hear the Telepath song start. And then she types some stuff and is meowing. And then she turns off the computer and goes back upstairs."
In 2018 Breakfast began to go into kidney failure. She was constantly peeing in Marcloid's room, and she wasn't eating. Eventually she was so uncomfortable and miserable Marcloid had to euthanize her. "And that was just so fucking traumatic for me, and so emotional," Marcloid says. "It really energized the search for truth and meaning that I had already begun years ago."
Marcloid began making Rainbow Bridge during Breakfast's illness. The title isn't just a callback to her record label (which she folded around five years ago) but also a reference to contemporary folk mythology about a rainbow bridge that, in Marcloid's words, "our pets either cross when they die to go to the other side, or they go there and they wait for us." The cover art, by Marcloid and Jeremy Coubrough, shows a Siamese cat sitting in a green field with her back to the viewer, looking at the prismatic steps of a bridge that leads upward into a kind of bloated growth of exploding colors.
The chaos of different hues fits the Fire-Toolz aesthetic. As Hausu Mountain cofounder Doug Kaplan puts it, "There's just nobody else that sounds like this, and there will never be another. Each track goes a billion different places but has a strong sense of oneness." Marcloid's other projects often follow particular rules or fit into particular genres; Mindspring Memories, for example, is mostly slowed-down and otherwise manipulated smooth-jazz samples. A recent album under the name Path to Lobster Believers is tape-collage improvisation. But with Fire-Toolz, Marcloid says, "Anything goes. It's a no-rules catchall; everything reports to it. It's the top of the pyramid."
The violent shifts in tone and genre on a Fire-Toolz track often feel exuberant and playful. On Rainbow Bridge, though, they create splatters of emotion: nostalgia, confusion, loss, hope. The opening track, "Gnosis .•o°Ozing," starts out as ranting death metal, with Marcloid screaming distorted, virtually indecipherable lyrics: "Arms wrapped in neon like a warning / A rainbow bridge unfurling / And now I lay listening to nothing / I feel my organs locking up."
By the second verse, she's superimposed smooth-jazz keyboard flourishes atop the noise, so that it sounds like the metal is battling easy listening, anger struggling with happier memories. "Layers in grief not unlike stages of passing / There are many / Not too many / Not so much."
The video for the song "Rainbow ∞ Bridge," created by Marcloid with Armpitrubber (aka Christine Janokowicz), provides an intense visual analogue for the music's smeared palette. This song too starts with a death-metal feel, pairing double kick drum with Marcloid's throat-tearing vocals. "Please don't be mad that I cut your cord / Fear lodged in my gums / Pressing into my face with fingerlike force / Breakfast!" she yells, as images of the kitty strobe and dissolve into colors, lights, emojis, a door opening, SpongeBob screaming. Tinkly new-age keyboard ambience plays over purple clouds and the on-screen words "Heaven! They say I can sit and soak you up." A guitar solo fit for a classic-rock ballad cuts through the shifting landscape, and then the song briefly fades into ambience as Breakfast romps across the screen and dissolves. It's a vision of a loved one disintegrating, perhaps into nothing, perhaps into memory or heaven, while pain and happiness alternate in spasms of glitches.
"Heaven has no location," Marcloid howls near the end of the track. That's a statement of spiritual hope; heaven is everywhere, Marcloid believes. "It's not any particular place. It's something that is all-encompassing," she says. "I think that it's everywhere and everything. It's the flow of life." You can hear that hope on tracks such as "⌈Mego⌉ ≜ Maitrī," which is all gentle surging keyboards and pattering electronica, encouraging you to gently drift into an ether of soft fur and purring.
A heaven without location can also simply be a heaven that doesn't exist, though, and that fear and doubt is also part of Rainbow Bridge. On the jittery "Microtubules," a throbbing beat loops around and around as Marcloid asks, "Were you afraid of crossing?" It's an unsettling question: of course she'd worry about a cat who never wanted to leave the bedroom going off on a long journey alone.
"When Breakfast was sick, anxiety was a huge, huge part of it," Marcloid says. "And even after she passed, and I knew that there was nothing to be done, there was still so much anxiety. I became frustrated because I wanted to know where she was, if she was anywhere. I just want the truth. I don't even care what it is, even if the truth is we're all just dead, and that when my body stops working, it's completely over."
Marcloid finished Rainbow Bridge months ago, and of course she didn't know it would be released at a time when anxiety, uncertainty, fear, and isolation would be so pervasive. In the context of a pandemic, the album seems even more relevant, not just because of its grief but also because of its prescient reminder of the importance of pets: during the stay-at-home order, animal adoptions have broken records as humans turn to cats and dogs to keep them company, and keep them sane, in isolation.
Marcloid adopted another cat herself after Breakfast died, and she now has three. "It's incredibly comforting to have them during a time like this," she says. "They're a solid rock for me to lean on. Especially lately, because they just don't fight with themselves. They're just such simpler creatures, and they're so much more connected to reality than any human could possibly be because of how complex our lives are. When they're in pain, they'll react—they won't like it, but they don't conceptualize and theorize about it. They don't get into this existential dread. They're just in pain, and they just want the pain to go away. That's all it is. It's that simple. We are just hopeless cases in comparison."
Marcloid's music, for all its genre shifts and chaotic oddness, can also reach for that kind of simplicity of thought and emotion. The six-minute instrumental "Angel (of Deth)" is elegiac, oceanic Muzak—a soundtrack to play while the waves roll in, or while watching a kitty sleep. At its conclusion the track breaks up into electronic blips and warbles, as though the world were coming apart and something else were wavering into existence behind the static.
"It's a mystery because we don't know," Marcloid says. "So I have to love and honor that mystery. I don't even know what God is, or if God exists, but whatever it is, that's what I love." Marcloid's tribute suggests that cats may know more about love than we do. They trust you even at the end, to help them die. Rainbow Bridge is not just a eulogy but an expression of hope that they'll lend you a paw in turn when your time comes. It's a comfort to think that when you start up those stairs, there will be a small someone to show you the way.

SUNN O))) are pleased to present Life Metal, their first new studio album in four years, due for release on Southern Lord in April 2019. The album will be supported by their first European tour since 2016, including their first ever French tour - dates and details below.
At the very beginning of 2018 SUNN O))) co-founders Stephen O'Malley & Greg Anderson set out on a path toward a new album production. They were both determined to create new music and a new method of working in the studio, without forgetting the long and proud history of production and studio accomplishments forged during their first two decades of existence (and the members' own musical experiences out of the band's). One long term goal was completely clear: to record Sunn O))) with Steve Albini in his Electrical Audio studio. Steve took the call, said "Sure, this will be fun. I have no idea what is going to happen."
Greg and Stephen gathered twice that spring for writing, conceptualising and riff woodshedding in the very building where the band was formed: Downtown Rehearsal in Los Angeles. Sonic cosmoses, flashes of abstract colour (synthetic and objective) and themes emerged from the mastered depths of saturation and circuits between the two players and their mountains of gear. Themes developed in terms of brightness and energy, while visionary cues pointed toward subconscious areas of practice and the pair realised they were exploring other zones of consciousness via sound/time and sound/energy manipulation. In early summer a pre-production session with full backline, as a trio with T.O.S. on Moog, was recorded at Dave Grohl’s 606 studios, Northridge, California.
In July 2018 SUNN O))) spent just over two weeks in Chicago at Electrical Audio (Studio A) with Steve Albini at the helm. The results are astounding: there is breadth and luminosity of colour, it sounds vast. The sessions were impeccably recorded, authentically represented and completely accurate. The spectrum cracked the firmament open in clarity. An all analogue technique was used, they recorded and mixed on tape, providing a creative gateway for SUNN O))) to evolve their production methods into stronger, confident, performance based and a more logical executive process. The album was mastered and lacquers cut from tape in October by SUNN O))) ally Matt Colton at Alchemy in London. The LP version is a AAA album, recorded and mixed on tape via a completely analogue production, from the input of the band's amplifiers and the air coming off the speakers in front of the microphones to needle touching the pressed vinyl on your turntable.
Continuing one of the main currents of the SUNN O))) concept, depth of exploration within collaboration, brought forth Hildur Guðnadóttir to the Sunn O))) constellation. Hildur is a sometime live collaborator of Sunn O))) and a renowned film music composer, former member of the bands Múm, Pan Sonic and Angel. She was a long time collaborator with the composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (RIP). Hildur lent her incredible attitude, as well as her voice, breath and electric cello, and the enigmatic haldorophone to the proceedings, culminating in the epic composition/concerto "Novæ". The cosmos clearly expands.
Tim Midyett, a close friend of Greg and Stephen since the Seattle days of the early 90s (and member of Silkworm, Bottomless Pit and Mint Mile), joined in a foundational role tying earth to sound with wicked performances on aluminium neck bass and baritone guitars: instruments he helped pioneer playing back in the 90s (alongside Steve and Shellac of course). Dark matter is reality.
Prolific new music composer Anthony Pateras arranged and recorded an incredible contribution of pipe organ for a piece titled "Troubled Air" (titled after an essay by author Aliza Shvarts, who also penned the liner notes for Sunn O)))’s Kannon) at Schlosskappelle, Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart. String theory of space.
The resulting album is titled Life Metal. It is fully realised and completely real. The record was produced by the core of Stephen & Greg & arranged by the greater constellation Sunn O))). Paintings by visual artist Samantha Keely Smithgraciously adorn the sleeve and provide a perfect suitable mask to the proceedings. They collide ideas of 19th century romanticism & late 20th abstract expressionism (mysticism) with Sunn O)))’s approach to metal (via reference points of Arbo, Turner, Delville, Richter, Turrel, Wou-Ki). Photographer Ronald Dick shot them in baths of light colour representing depth of sound pressure in the work.
SUNN O))) Life Metal (sunn300, Southern Lord)
1. Between Sleipnir's Breaths 2. Troubled Air 3. Aurora 4. Novae
There is a second more meditative LP titled Pyroclasts, also recorded by Steve Albini in parallel, and which will be revealed in the autumn 2019 (more later) with all music performed by Stephen, Greg, T.O.S., Tim Midyett, and Hildur Guðnadóttir.
SUNN O))) are touring March (EU/France), April (USA), September (USA), October (UK & Europe). They are working toward some special events in London and other cities.

Charley woke to the scent of fresh coffee and what smelled like baked oatmeal, which was one scent she hadn't experienced since leaving home. She sniffed the air and padded into the kitchen, finding Alley already at the table, sipping from a mug that looked like it contained more milk than actual coffee. Her hair was piled in a messy bun atop her head, and she wore a pair of tiny boxer shorts and a tank top for pajamas. Charley wondered if she ought to warn her about her sleeping attire in future. Last thing she needed was her boys to get an eyeful of her cousin dressed like that. Vinnie would be incorrigible! And poor, modest Modo would most likely have a stroke. Throttle, well … that guy was such an emotional enigma, he could probably go either way.
"This smells good." Charley inhaled deeply, pulling back the dish towel draped over a pan of steaming oatmeal. "Your mom's recipe?"
     "Naturally."
"Did I know I even had ingredients to make this?"
"Doubt it. I pulled 'em from the back of your pantry. They're probably expired, so if we die of food poisoning, I apologize ahead of time," Alley teased.
     "Funny."
"By the way, I have to know. I was digging through your fridge and … do you have some sort of a root beer fetish or something? I'm not sure I even wanna know about the hotdogs..."
"Ah, yeah." Charley smiled sheepishly. "I've got some friends and they kind of live on the stuff. So, I keep the place well-stocked for their visits."
"Hmm." Alley sipped her coffee. "Are these the same 'friends' who are unfairly bigoted toward rats?"
"Oh, stop it." Charley chuckled as she cut a large square of the oatmeal. "They're good guys. They've just … had some major issues with rat infestation at home, so they're kind of on bad terms with the whole lot of 'em. Besides that, the boys are really looking forward to meeting you, so maybe try and play nice, huh?"
"The boys, is it? Hey. You're not trying to set me up or anything, are you?" Alley regarded her with a teasing glimmer in her eye.
Charley laughed outright. "Trust me, kid. I doubt these guys are anywhere close to your type."
     ~*~*~*~*~
The Last Chance Garage was usually closed for business on Sundays, to give Charley a chance to catch up on backlogged work and make any necessary repairs or upgrades to the guys' bikes. Really, the way they treated those beautiful machines, she was surprised they didn't turn around and dump their riders on their furry asses in protest.
This time, Alley dragged her downtown to a nicer part of the city, where they spent the day furniture shopping for the spare room. Alley managed to find a decent bed and a three-drawer dresser in an antique shop, which she insisted on paying for despite Charley's offer to buy. "I've been working jobs since I was fifteen, and I've got a nice amount of money saved up. And since I'm attending school on scholarships, I can afford to blow a little," she said.
"You're gonna have to blow more on decent clothes for yourself in a couple of months," Charley reminded her. "You aren't exactly packed for winter weather, you know."
"Hmmm, winter." Alley tapped her chin thoughtfully. "You know, I think I've heard of that…"
Charley snorted. "Laugh it up, but when the temp drops below fifty degrees, you'll be begging for a pair of good thermal underwear. I somehow don't think Daisy Dukes and a tank top will cut it."
She eyed Alley's ensemble, again reminding herself to have a talk about her cousin's wardrobe choices around the guys. Alley was already drawing enough attention from every male who passed them. They all gawked openly at the slender young woman, whose golden-tanned skin was complimented nicely by the white short-shorts and baby-pink camisole top she wore. Her colorful hair was still pulled into its bun, revealing the delicate tattoo of a blue and purple filigree butterfly gracing the back of her neck. In mid-August, the Chicago streets were stifling with heat, but she seemed unaffected, having grown up in a near-tropical climate for almost a decade. Charley felt positively frumpy in comparison.
"Well, lets get this stuff back to the garage," she sighed, closing the rear gate of her pickup. "It's almost supper time."
"Question. How the hell are we going to get all this up into the apartment?" Alley asked. "The hall at the top of the stairs is kinda narrow."
"Well, If we have to, we can disassemble the bed frame and dresser and carry them up in pieces."
"And what about the boxspring and mattress?" Alley eyed them skeptically. "Glad I went for the single. A full would never make it."
"Don't worry. There's a fire escape outside your window. And the window itself should be tall enough. We can probably hoist them in that way."
"All by ourselves?" Alley groaned, not liking the idea at all.
"Nah. I'll be enlisting some manual labor to help move all this stuff. They'll be here first thing tomorrow."
     ~*~*~*~*~
As expected, Vinnie, Modo, and Throttle were less than thrilled with the idea of moving heavy furniture. Even the promise of root beer and hotdogs didn't cease Vinnie's grumbling … although the promise of finally getting to meet Alley did.
Within an hour of calling, Charley heard their bikes rumble up to the garage, passing a recently-added sensor that automatically opened the wide metal doors; a bell installed above the doors went off, loudly announcing the arrival of customers. It also doubled as a fire alarm. Such a handy system, this was. Charley wished she'd thought of installing it years ago. She'd have probably saved herself a lot of trashed garage doors due to the guys' constant, overenthusiastic entrances.
"Hey, right on time," she called from the stairs.
Vinnie hopped off his bike, pulling his helmet off. He had a funny look on his face. So did the other two, for that matter. "Sweetheart, what the hell is that … that thing parked out front?" he demanded, his tail twitching.
Charley blinked as she climbed down to the garage. "What thing?" She glanced outside, and then it dawned on her. She had to laugh at the matching expressions of disgust on their furry faces. "What, you never seen a VW Bus before?"
"It's … it's…" Vinnie was clearly at a loss for words.
"Colorful?" she supplied helpfully, her lips still twitching.
"I'd have gone with 'eye-gouging', but yeah," Throttle replied.
"Who would actually own something like that?" Modo added with a snort.
Charley raised an eyebrow. "My cousin, actually."
His eye widened. "Er, meanin' no disrespect to Alley Ma'am or anything…"
"Relax," she chuckled. "Alley has some … unique tastes, that's all. I'm inclined to agree with your description, but don't tell her I said that."
"You gonna just leave it sit out there? It'll probably drive away business," Vinnie snorted. "No self-respectin' biker would be caught dead in a garage with that sitting in front of it."
"I'll manage," she said wryly. "It arrived almost dead in the water, so it ain't going anywhere for awhile. Although if you macho mice could help me push it into the garage sometime today, I'd be grateful. I need to check the engine over when I get a little free time."
"Be glad to help," Modo offered.
"Great. But, first order of business. Give me five minutes and then come on up. I gotta go give Alley a heads-up about your arrival."
"You did tell her about us, right?" Throttle asked.
     "Weeell…"
     "Charley-girl!"
"Look, there is no way to describe three walking, talking alien mice without sounding bat-shit crazy," Charley laughed. "I'll warn her, okay? But she's gotta see for herself, or she'll never believe it."
The trio glanced at each other as Charley disappeared up the stairs. Well. This was bound to get interesting.
     ~*~*~*~*~
"Hey, Alley Cat?" Charley poked her head into the bedroom. Her cousin was seated cross-legged on the floor, feeding Mercedes a slice of apple with peanut butter spread over it. "Is that healthy?" she asked.
"A little treat every once in awhile won't kill her. She's had a long trip." Alley scooped the rat up, kissed the top of her little head, and deposited her into a rather impressive three-tiered cage sitting in the corner. "What's up?"
"Oh, the guys are here. Wanna come meet them?"
"Sure!" Alley jumped up, but stopped when she found her way blocked. "Okay, what?" she asked, noting the uneasy expression on the other woman's face.
"I need to warn you … the guys are a little … unusual," Charley hedged.
     "How so?"
"Well, they look a little different."
     "Such as?"
Charley thought for a moment. "Excessive body hair?" she offered after a moment.
Alley giggled. "Okay, so they don't wax. Not like I've never seen that before. Hello! I grew up on the beach! You'd be amazed at the amount of body hair I've been forced to look at over the years."
"That's not exactly what I meant." Charley scratched her head, clearly at a loss. She glanced at the cage and brightened. "Think of Mercedes!" she exclaimed. "Only … male. And a lot taller. With more muscle. And biker clothes."
"What, you're telling me you've got giant biker rats in your living room? Better call the exterminator!" Alley laughed and ducked under Charley's arm, heading down the short hallway to the living room … where she came to a screeching halt and gaped in stunned wonder at the three furry … creatures standing by the stairs.
"Charley. Y-you've got … giant biker rats in your living room!"
Charley slapped a hand over her eyes. "Whoa boy. Now you've gone and done it," she groaned, not sure if she was talking to Alley, or herself.
Alley squeaked and hastily backpedaled when the huge gray rat with a metal arm stepped forward, its single red eye taking on a demonic glow. "Rats!" it growled. "My mama didn't-"
"Easy there, big guy," the one covered in tawny gold fur hastily cut in, his voice full of warning. "She doesn't know."
"Yeah, simmer down, Modo, you're scarin' the poor kid!" The last one to speak had glossy white fur and a metal plate covering half his face. He offered a reassuring smile to the ashen-faced woman, who merely moved further back until she bumped into her cousin.
"Alley Cat?" Charley shook her shoulder gently. "Breathe, honey. It's okay."
Alley shook her head slowly. "Jiminy Christmas, Charley," she uttered softly. Right before her eyes rolled back into her head, and she fainted dead away.

Author’s Note: So I am not insanely happy with the ending, but I do enjoy this story. It was a random thought that I instantly texted @the-witching-hours12-3 about and then got the motivation to write it.
Also, shoutout to Mara ( @the-witching-hours12-3 ) for always beta-reading my random ramblings and helping me make them better!
If you would like to be tagged in any of my future pieces, check out my tag list above and let me know! And as always, feedback is greatly appreciated!

- DreaSaurusREX
You were originally from Chicago, but you’d moved after escaping from Hydra. They had targeted you, and thought you would be a good candidate for their “little experiment”. They wanted to genetically modify your genetic makeup to see if they could create a superhuman with the abilities of a feline but remaining human in appearance. Their tests were excruciating and never seemed to end, but they succeeded.
You’d developed retractable claws, impressive jumping and climbing skills, and very obvious patterns in your eyes and hair. Your eyes were now an unnaturally yellow color with a slitted pupil, like a cat’s. Your hair had turned black and now grew with gray stripes and streaks that looked surprisingly natural, closely resembling an American shorthair.
Hydra trained you to be one of their top assassins, and used your enhancements to make you one of the best in the world. They put a collar on you, an actual collar, and had thought that they could keep you confined to their facility.
That is, until you broke out. As soon as you did, you took whatever you could find from what had once been your home, and then fled; heading somewhere you thought no one would think to search.
That was about a year ago, you moved to Bucharest to start a new life. So did your boyfriend, James.
Throughout your time with Hydra, you had heard plenty about the Winter Soldier. You also had an idea of who he really was, who he had been before Hydra. So when you ran into a beautiful man with a mechanical arm, you knew it was him.
The two of you were in a small local cafe, he was in line to order a drink while you were working on a sketch. You stood up and decided to get in line behind him in order to talk to him after he paid. You went to go and tap his shoulder once he was walking away from the cash register, but he had been on alert and ended up grabbing your wrist with his metal hand, causing some pain. Once he turned around and saw that you weren’t a threat, however, he instantly let go and started to apologize.
“Îmi pare rău, dor! (I’m so sorry, miss!)” He said in Romanian. “Esti bine? (Are you alright?)”
“Sunt bine! Vorbești engleza? (I'm okay! Do you speak English?)” You had only been in the country a couple of months; your Romanian was still very rusty.
“Oh yeah. Sorry, thought you were a local.” You finally looked up at him, letting him see your slitted eyes. “Are you sure you’re okay, ma’am?”
“Can we talk? I think you’ll find that we have a lot more in common than expected.” He nodded and lead the two of you to a table where you talked until the cafe closed.
The two of you had bonded over your abnormalities and became close very quickly. Soon you were living together and helping one another through your many problems. His problems were mostly to do with his memory and social skills, yours were more to do with your physical mutations.
So as to not raise too many eyebrows, you had invested in colored contacts to put over your cat-like eyes, giving them a dark brown color instead. Your hair wasn’t too crazy; nowadays, people would bleach and dye their hair all sorts of colors, so your black and grey hair wasn’t too loud. And you’d learned to control your claws like Bucky had learned to control his temper.
Over the course of your relationship with Bucky you’d helped him (and, subsequently,  the rest of the team) deal with the Sokovia Accords and the aftermath of the civil war between the Avengers. But now that it was all behind you, everyone was slowly coming back together. There were still arguments and varying opinions, but nothing that couldn’t be worked out or taken care of over time.
It was one of those nights where everyone had to be on their best behavior. Tony was throwing a formal party in order to show a sense of unity among the Avengers again. You had decided on simpler makeup and hair to go along with your 1940s inspired dress (for your enjoyment, and Bucky’s.) You were a bit self-conscious wearing this dress because of a gnarly scar that extended down your entire right arm courtesy of T’Challa during the fight in Germany all those years ago. You were civil with the ruler of Wakanda now, but you couldn’t help but still hold a bit of a grudge.
Bucky tried to help make sure you didn’t focus on that. The two of you were standing around a small bar table with Steve, sipping some drinks and chatting. Bucky knew that it would help you if you were involved in conversation with not only him, but Steve too.
“I can’t believe how professional this thing is. Tony really learned the difference between a college party and polished event,” Bucky commented while doing a pan around the room.
“Right? This is a very pleasant surprise,” you replied, looking around the room as well. But your glance was quick, not wanting to draw attention to your eyes, and Steve noticed.
“Hey, (Y/N/N)? You’re not wearing your contacts?”
“Yeah. I tried to put them in and got frustrated and gave up cause I was running late.” You took another sip of your drink before freezing at a voice behind you.
“Ah. It seems this is where you three had run away to tonight. I was beginning to think that the scaredy cat of the trio had run away.” There was no mistaking that accent. T’Challa. Your grip on your cup tightened just a little bit, you could almost hear the glass crackling under the increased pressure. Bucky’s hand made its way to the small of your back, slowly petting you to help keep you calm. You took a breath before responding.
“We have been wandering around all night. Met with people, helped with getting a better public image. Where have you been slinking off to, T’Challa?”
“Our paths must have not crossed; I apologize.” You were pleasantly surprised by his apology. You had expected some other snide comment about your mutation or not lack of ‘proper’ training or something equally annoying. “Just know that there is no shame in being scared. Just make sure you do not show weakness again. Or you may end up with more scars than that. ”
He nodded to your arm and began to turn away. You let out a growl that loud enough for  Bucky and Steve to hear from the table. Your claws began to extend as he continued to talk, effectively negating his apology. Bucky saw your claws and made eye contact with Steve, but before either of them could get to you and get a grip on your arm to hold you back, you stalked up behind T’Challa and grabbed his shoulder. You applied enough pressure to make sure he felt your claws but not enough to do any damage, making him stop as you stepped around in front of him.
“Let’s make this clear, Kitkat. If we are supposed to be working together and getting the team back in working order, this shit needs to stop.” He opened his mouth to speak but you cut him off with a small hiss. “Oh no, you are going to wait until I am done talking. We don’t have the greatest relationship because you were a dick to me and to Bucky, but I am trying to move past it and at least be civil with you. If you can stop being a royal pain in the ass, then try talking to me again. If not, work your shit out somewhere else.”
You were about to walk away and leave him with that, but then thought of a much more badass ending.
“As much as you’d like to think that you’re the only cat in this cat and mouse game, you are very mistaken. If you keep playing, you’ll find out that you’re not the one with nine lives, your highness.”
You made sure to say his title in an angry growl. You met his usual calm and collected eyes with your angry yellow slits. Before T’Challa could say anything, Steve stepped in.
“Alright you two, enough. This is not the time or place. (Y/N/N), go back to the table. T’Challa, Tony is waving us over. We will deal with this later.”
You backed down, retracting your claws and letting Bucky grip your wrist and pull you back towards the table. Steve was using his authoritative voice that he knew you’d listen to. Bucky wrapped his arm around your waist and handed you your drink.
“While I’m glad you stood up to him, I could tell how worried Steve was. Maybe don’t bring out your claws next time, doll? I’m pretty sure that’s where Stevie lost it.”
“I’ll try. But I could not let him fuckin’ talk like that.” Bucky just smiled and kissed the side of your head.
“I know, sweetheart. He’ll come around at some point. I mean, hell, he’s finally okay with me. It just took time.” You just nodded and took another few sips of your drink. “I’m just glad Steve stepped in before it turned into an actual cat fight.” You looked at him and rolled your eyes. He just smiled and leaned in for a kiss, you turned and pulled away enough to talk.
“I’d rather not have to fight him, again.” You unintentionally pause and look down at the visible scar on your arm. You only looked for a moment before shaking your head as if you could just as easily shake away the mental image. “But if he tries me again, you know damn well that I won’t hesitate.”
You picked up your drink and took an annoyed sip. Bucky wrapped an arm around your waist and pulled you a bit closer to him. He kissed your cheek before looking at you with one of those smiles that make your heart skip.
“I know that. That’s why I’ll be there to hold you back.” He took a sip of his drink before morphing his smile into a (somewhat) joking one. “Or help make him your personal scratching post.”
You couldn’t help but match his smile and lean in to kiss him.

SUNN O))) ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM & U.S. TOUR DATES IN APRIL / WATCH THE LIFE METAL TRAILER NOW
Tumblr media
Sunn O))) are pleased to present Life Metal, their first new studio album in four years, due for release on Southern Lord in April 2019. The album will be supported by their first U.S. tour since 2017 and the premier U.S. tour of their 2019-2020 season, including stops at The Masonic Lodge in Detroit, Howard Theatre in DC, Agora Theatre in Cleveland, The Caves in Pelham, TN and Brooklyn Steel. Dates and details can be found below, with more info to come soon.
Read a new interview with Sunn O))) & watch the Life Metal teaser now via Stereogum.
At the very beginning of 2018, Sunn O))) co-founders Stephen O'Malley & Greg Anderson set out on a path toward a new album production.
In July 2018, Sunn O))) spent just over two weeks in Chicago at Electrical Audio (Studio A) with Steve Albini at the helm.
It is fully realized and completely real. The record was produced by the core of Stephen & Greg & arranged by the greater constellation Sunn O))). Paintings by visual artist Samantha Keely Smith graciously adorn the sleeve and provide a perfect suitable mask to the proceedings. They collide ideas of 19th century romanticism & late 20th abstract expressionism (mysticism) with Sunn O)))’s approach to metal (via reference points of Arbo, Turner, Delville, Richter, Turrel, Wou-Ki). Photographer Ronald Dick shot them in baths of light colour representing depth of sound pressure in the work.

new arrivals 7-13-17
glenn jones plays this week on thursday night at trinosophes. also - this week is the first week of the east dearborn musical event - tunes at noon. full desription and schedule just below the list of this week's new arrivals. items in stock thursday - july 13th 2017 Love Theme: S/T LP $21.99If there's a single guiding motif to this debut recording from Love Theme, it's the melancholic throb of love learnt and love lost, a descent that tumbles and slips through the overall feeling of looking back. As intimately and carefully as its parts cohesively lament a narrative, it's the after-image that catches your breath, like a memory morphing as it is observed. Comprised of Alex Zhang Hungtai, of the now defunct project Dirty Beaches, along with Austin Milne, and Simon Frank, Love Theme is arranged from an improvised session with twin saxophones, synthesizer, percussion, drum machine, and voice. The aching wane of the saxophone arrangements frisk the propulsive aggro of the mixed percussion, forcing a melancholic halo upon the queasy stupor of the synthetic swing that closes each side of the record. It's a bizarre lust for life that's being divined from equal parts dislocation and invigoration, a potent remedy which perhaps Love Theme can call their own. Percolating and finding form over time, the record instinctively follows a travel narrative, moving across a series of landscapes, reflecting the innate experiences of the expressions and voices that were first collected in South London back in February 2015. Mitchell, Nicole : Mandorla CD $15.99"Mandorla Awakening II: Emerging Worlds is Nicole Mitchell's second album for Chicago-based FPE Records. Recorded in May of 2015 at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, it features her longtime collaborators Renee Baker (violin), Tomeka Reid (cello, banjo), Alex Wing (electric guitar, oud) and Jovia Armstrong (percussion), along with new members Tatsu Aoki (bass, shamisen, taiko) and Kojiro Umezaki (shakuhachi). Also in the mix is Chicago artist, scholar and poet Avery R Young, who brings her lyrics to life with visceral humanity. Composer and flutist Nicole Mitchell, once hailed by Chicago Reader music critic Peter Margasak as the 'greatest living flutist in jazz', continues the work begun when jazz visionary Sun Ra and his Arkestra first touched down on Planet Earth and told humanity that space (outer and inner) is indeed the place. As with contemporary Afrofuturist pioneers like cosmic jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington, post-everything beat maker Flying Lotus, R&B cyborg Janelle Monáe and dystopian noise-rappers Death Grips, she uses Afrofuturism as a platform to launch her own, unique vision. Her vast sound often encompasses contemporary classical, globally oriented fusion, gospel, spoken word, funk-inspired groove research and even brittle shards of avant-rock. Mandorla Awakening II collides dualities such as acoustic vs electric, country vs urban, simple vs complex, while also sounding through intercultural dialogue between Black, European and Pan-Asian improvisational languages. The outcome is a creative music suite that blurs musical styles into recognizable fragments that weave a unique sound fabric, where human emotion and the struggles of today swim." Baroncini/D'Amario: Music for Movement  LP $32.99Sonor Music Editions present a reissue Angelo Baroncini and Bruno Battisti D'amario's Music For Movement, originally released in 1969. Another terrific jam and a very obscure Italian library record, originally released on Roman Record Company label, the label responsible for Droga (1972), Traffico (1972), and the Viaggio Attraverso I Problemi Dell'Uomo series. The music is signed by the great guitar players and composers Angelo Baroncini and Bruno Battisti D'Amario, D'Amario being the unmissable guitar man of maestro Ennio Morricone. Crazy early fuzz beats with fast western swings, experimental rock distractions, rhythmic movements, with totally insane acid guitar and sitar riffs and a huge underground psychedelic mood. A truly inspired and deep session recorded for some impossible TV synchronization purpose. Holy grail alert. Original sleazy stereo recording restored sound. Edition of 500 Watson, Chris: El Tren Fantasma CD $15.992017 repress. "Take the ghost train from Los Mochis to Veracruz and travel cross country, coast to coast, Pacific to Atlantic. Ride the rhythm of the rails on board the Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México (FNM) and the music of a journey that has now passed into history." --Chris Watson Kawai, Kenji: Ghost In The Shell  OST LP $27.99We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records present the first ever official vinyl pressing of the soundtrack for Mamoru Oshii's critically acclaimed and all around legendary science fiction anime film Ghost In The Shell (1995), adapted from Masamune Shirow's groundbreaking manga series of the same name. The haunting score is composed by Kenji Kawai, one of Japan's most celebrated soundtrack composers alongside Joe Hisaishi and Ryuichi Sakamoto, whose work includes Hideo Nakata's Ring (1998) and Ring 2 (1999), Death Note (2006), Hong Kong films Seven Swords by Tsui Hark (2005) and Ip Man by Wilson Yip (2008), and countless others. Kawai's compositions see ancient harmonies and percussions uncannily mesh with synthesized sounds of the modern world to convey a sumptuous balance between folklore tradition and futuristic outlook. For its iconic main theme "Making Of Cyborg", Kawai had a choir chant a wedding song in ancient Japanese following Bulgarian folk harmonies, setting the standard for a timeless and unparalleled soundtrack that admirably echoes the film's musings on the nature of humanity in a technologically advanced world. Ghost In The Shell is widely considered one of the best anime films of all time and its influence has been felt in the work of numerous movie directors, including James Cameron's Avatar (2009), the Wachowskis's The Matrix (1999), and Steven Spielberg's AI: Artificial Intelligence (2001). For fans of anime, manga, movie soundtracks, science fiction, ambient, folklore, Japan, Akira (1988), artificial intelligence, Midori Takada. Cut from the original master reels at Emil Berliner Studios (formerly the in-house recording department of renowned classical record label Deutsche Grammophon). Trost, Heather : Agistri LP $20.99LP version. "Heather Trost is best known for her work composing and performing as one half of A Hawk And A Hacksaw. She has also played with Neutral Milk Hotel, Beirut, Josephine Foster, and most recently Thor Harris of Swans. She has arranged and performed with the BBC Concert Orchestra, as well as conductor Andre De Ridder and his Stargaze Orchestra, and toured throughout the world. In 2014 she released her first solo project, a 7-inch on Ba Da Bing Records, followed in 2015 by Ourobouros, a limited edition cassette of expansive electronic ambient compositions influenced by Basil Kirchin, Terry Riley and Angelo Badalamenti on Cimiotti Recordings. These two projects propelled a full length album: named after a Greek Island, Agistri is a song cycle of freely formed pop songs touching upon soul, samba, and pop music of the '60s and '70s, with a subtle shade of psychedelia. Ambient and melancholic sounds interweave with Hammond organs and '70s Italian synthesizers, reflecting the desert landscapes of New Mexico, and the sparse shrubbery and turquoise water of the Aegean Sea and its islands. Bolstered by contributions from Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeremy Barnes on drums and bass, Deerhoof's John Dieterich on guitar, and Drake Hardin and Rosie Hutchinson of cult New Mexico band Mammal Eggs, Trost's talents as a songwriter and arranger explode on this wonderful, often surreal album." Wire #402: Aug 17 MAG/CD  $10.50"Stuck to the cover of this month's issue: The Wire Tapper 44 CD, featuring 20 tracks by AGF + Werkstatt, Sarah Angliss, Paul Rooney, Susanna, Hear In Now, Bonaventure, and more. Meanwhile, inside the issue: Finland's postmodern metal masters Circle; New York underground hiphop veteran Scotty Hard; Anton Lukoszevieze, leader of UK chamber music ensemble Apartment House; a report on the electronic explorers and pop-punk mavericks of Sapporo's DIY microscene; and more." We also have group lessons for preschoolers called "music for little mozarts." For the summer concert we have put together a rock band comprised of students and instructors that will be playing some classic rock and modern rock and punk rock songs. 7/20 Lac La BelleLocal musicians Jennie Knaggs & Nick Schillace create music that blends history with the present via accordion, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, harmonizing vocals, and fingerpicking resonator guitar. With their separate experiences learning folk and blues in Appalachia, American roots bind Lac La Belle’s compositions with a heavy thread. For this performance enjoy some of their favorite old time, bluegrass and western swing favorites, alongside their original tunes. 7/27 Detroit Pleasure SocietyDetroit Pleasure Society plays the traditional jazz of New Orleans with a fresh twist and raucous candor. 8/3 Libby DeCamp"Libby DeCamp makes dusty folk and American Roots-inspired music with a lyrical edge and a classic three-piece energy, delivered with a haunting vocal closeness that reaches listeners of all kinds. Sweetly soulful "Broken Folk." 8/10 Michael Malis TrioMichael Malis is a pianist and composer based in Detroit, MI. Malis bridges the gap between original composed, complex material and the spontaneity of improvisation. His trio (piano, bass, drums),   featured on his latest album, has toured in the United States and Canada, and in September 2016, they performed at the Detroit International Jazz Festival. 8/17 Viands "Viands is a spontaneous collaboration between two auteurs of Detroit's underground music scene: Joel Peterson and David Shettler. The music they create is a deep, reflective and fearless alternate-reality keyboard meditation that draws on the pair's broad musical vision to explore new vistas.
