Chat Pile Announces New Album, God’s Country
The LP will be released on July 29th via The Flenser. // Watch a music video for the album’s first single “Slaughterhouse” now.
Tumblr media
There’s a sick irony to how a country that extols rhetoric of individual freedom, in the same gasp, has no problem commodifying human life as if it were meat to feed the insatiable hunger of capitalism. If this is American nihilism taken to its absolute zenith, then God’s Country, the first full length record from Oklahoma City noise rock quartet Chat Pile is the aural embodiment of such a concept.
Having lived alongside the heaps of toxic refuse that the band derives its name from, the fatalism of daily life in the American Midwest permeates throughout the works of Chat Pile, and especially so on God's Country. Exasperated by the pandemic, the hopelessness of climate change, the cattle shoot of global capitalism, and fueled by “...lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of THC,” God’s Country is as much of an acknowledgement of the Earth’s most assured demise as it is a snarling violent act of defiance against it. Within its over 40 minute runtime, God’s Country displays both Chat Pile’s most aggressively unhinged and contemplatively nuanced moments to date, drawing from its preceding two EPs and its score for the 2021 film, Tenkiller. In the band’s own words, the album is, at its heart, “Oklahoma’s specific brand of misery.” A misery intent on taking all down with it and its cacophonous chaos on its own terms as opposed to idly accepting its otherwise assured fall. This is what the end of the world sounds like.
Watch (+ share) the music video for God's Country's first single, "Slaughterhouse."
In just a couple of years, Chat Pile has made nothing short of a profound impression on the underground music discourse. Formed in the spring of 2019 by Raygun Busch (vocals), Luther Manhole (Guitar), Stin (Bass), and Captain Ron (Drums), the noise-rock quartet released two EPs that same year, titled This Dungeon Earth and Remove Your Skin Please. Spurred on by both a hearty run of live performances and a swiftly growing online fanbase, Chat Pile became a staple name among its genre contemporaries thanks to its hellish synthesis of noise rock, sludge, industrial, and mid 90’s nu-metal.
God's Country is available for pre-order here.  See Chat Pile on the road this week and look for more news and singles to arrive soon.

Boris Announce New Full-Length Heavy Rocks (2022) + Fall U.S. Tour
Their new LP will be out on August 12th via Relapse Records. // See Boris on tour in August + September with NOTHING.
Watch (+ share) a music video for the new single “She Is Burning” now.

The legendary Boris celebrate a 30 year career as one of experimental music's most forward-thinking, heavy, and innovative bands with the new album Heavy Rocks (2022). Continuing their series of Heavy Rocks records, Boris once again channels the classic proto-metal sounds of the 70’s into something all new.
Boris comment on the new album:
"The world has changed over the last two years. Everyone's thinking is simpler and pragmatic. Now, it is easier for everyone to grasp what is important to each of us.
We leave it to the future and pass it on. The soul of rock music is constantly evolving. A soul that transcends words and meaning to reach you - instinct, intuition, and fangs.
This is the heavy rock of Boris now.
As we land on our 30th anniversary, Boris continues to evolve, accelerating the latest and universal.
Boris does not lead anyone anywhere.
We just keep showing this attitude.”
Heavy Rocks (2022), 10 pulse-pounding tracks, highlight the very trajectory of Boris and their storied career - from the driving, fuzzed out Rock N' Roll opener "She is Burning," to the punk, raucous "My Name is Blank," Boris are heavier than ever before. "Question 1" is just kickass— D-beats give way to a doomed, spaced out and heavier-than-anything guitar wailing and feedback before diving back into their metal sound, sending the listener into a complete frenzy. This is unmistakably Boris, and this is the band at the height of their powers.
Boris have shared a music video for Heavy Rocks (2022) first single, "She is Burning."
Elsewhere on the record, a more daring, "out there" side of Boris begins to shine on tracks such as the aptly titled "Blah Blah Blah," the industrial "Ghostly Imagination" and the truly wild "Nosferatou." Noisy passages (not unlike prior collaborations with legendary artists like Merzbow,) collide with visceral vocal howls while a relentless, almost Zornian-saxophone shreds harder than any guitar solo ever could.
In 2022, Boris cement what Heavy Rock means to them and release one of their most captivating records to date.
Additionally, Boris have announce Summer U.S. tour dates with Philadelphia’s Nothing. The tour kicks off after Boris and Nothings performances at Psycho Las Vegas and runs through late August and September. The tour also includes a festival performance at Post Festival in Indianapolis, tickets are on sale this Friday, May 20th and a full tour schedule can be found below.

Cave In Share “Reckoning” Music Video, Announce Headline Tour
New album Heavy Pendulum is out May 20th on Relapse Records. // See Cave In on tour in the U.S. in July + August and in EU/UK in October.
Tumblr media
Boston legends Cave In make a highly anticipated return with their Relapse Records debut, Heavy Pendulum, their first full studio record in over a decade. Today, Cave In share the newest single “Reckoning” with an accompanying band performance video. “Reckoning” is the first Cave In song to be fully written by guitarist Adam McGrath.
McGrath comments:  “‘Reckoning’ started as a demo I sent to the band for consideration while mapping out the track list for Heavy Pendulum. It was inspired by the idea of adding a song to the acoustic/electric live sets Steve and I had been performing on and off for the last 20 years. A fresh song with that set-up (acoustic/electric guitar) seemed exciting to pursue. Somewhere between Led Zeppelin’s ‘Battle of Evermore’ and Mad Season’s ‘Long Gone Day’ is the birth of ‘Reckoning,’ a song about digesting huge loss and forging paths into unknown futures.”
Watch & listen to Cave In's Jay Zucco-directed video for “Reckoning” on YouTube.
Additionally, Cave In announce headline tour dates throughout the Summer and Fall. Cave In will tour the United States from July 21-Aug 06 with support from label mates Author & Punisher. Cave In will also tour throughout Europe & the United Kingdom in October with support from Stake. A full tour schedule is available below.
Produced by Kurt Ballou at God City, Heavy Pendulum showcases everything that has long established CAVE IN as one of the best contemporary rock, hardcore, and metal bands since their monumental 1998 debut Until Your Heart Stops. From the driving tracks such as crushing opener "New Reality" to the metallic edge of "Blood Spiller", Heavy Pendulum sees CAVE IN look back at their discography and capture their most memorable, visceral, and forward-thinking moments to create a record that is all at once familiar and in true CAVE IN fashion, ahead of the mainstream.
Heavy Pendulum is out May 20 on DLX 2xLP/2xLP/CD/CS/Digital. Physical pre-orders are available via Relapse.com AT THIS LOCATION. Digital Downloads/Streaming HERE.
CAVE IN (Stephen Brodsky - Guitar/Vocals, Adam McGrath - Guitar/Vocals, John-Robert Conners - Drums) sees a revival following the addition of Nate Newton (Converge, Doomriders, Old Man Gloom) on bass and vocals.

Scarcity Announce Epic Debut LP Aveilut for The Flenser
The duo, feat. Brendon Randall-Myers and Doug Moore, will release the 45-minute-long composition on July 15th. // Watch the video for passage “ii” now.
Tumblr media
There’s a sense of loss apparent throughout Brooklyn experimental black metalists Scarcity’s debut album Aveilut— it’s steeped in the inescapable presence of the realities of death.  Multi-instrumentalist Brendon Randall-Myers (conductor of the Glenn Branca Ensemble since Branca’s passing) wrote Aveilut while processing the sudden deaths of two people close to him, tracked it while caught in Beijing’s first lockdown of 2020, and finished it while surrounded by the overwhelming plague visuals of New York’s early COVID peak. Back in Brooklyn, vocalist Doug Moore (of Pyrrhon, Weeping Sores, Glorious Depravity, and Seputus) soon found himself in the midst of an equally bleak lockdown experience — living next to a funeral home when New York City was America’s COVID epicenter. From conception through development, tangible death surrounded Aveilut.
The result of such a profound closeness with death is the grief-stricken Aveilut, which takes its name from the Hebrew word for mourning. 72-note octaves, alternate tunings, psychoacoustic phenomena and macro-phrases embody the hugeness of loss, the inexplicable space of death’s void that Randall-Myers faced both on a personal and existential scale. Together with Moore’s gripping vocal delivery and stark lyrics, the album takes the form of a hyperobject, an entity with such vastness and reach that it’s difficult for the human mind to comprehend.
Today, “ii” from Aveilut surfaces alongside a video by filmmaker Derrick Belcham featuring sound-reactive footage of dancer Jacalyn Tatro frenetically juxtaposed with the massive, harsh landscapes of southern Iceland.
Watch the video for "ii" via Decibel Magazine (or share from YouTube).
Consisting of one 45-minute composition, the music on Aveilut is black metal roughly in the vein of Jute Gyte, Krallice, Mare Cognitum, and Enhare— with hefty doses of post-Branca microtonal guitar abuse, and a cinematic scope that draws on Randall-Myers’ work with orchestras.
Aveilut’s mathematical abstraction and lyrical focus on the greatness of the void breed raw emotion, attempting to represent a catastrophe, the vastness and inevitability of things outside our control; as well as a direct expression of grief, a kind of requiem. Though born of Randall-Myers' and Moore’s intense intimacy with absence, Aveilut is an attempt to present a harrowing universal representation of death’s true form.
Look for Aveilut to be available on CD, LP + Digital formats on July 15th, 2022 from The Flenser — pre-orders are available here and more news from Scarcity will arrive soon.

Having recently wrapped a full U.S. tour this past spring, Greet Death are back at it, this time announcing a North American tour in July and August supporting Foxing.  All dates can be found below and tickets are available here.
Greet Death have rolled out four new singles over the course of the last six months, most recently with the post-rock/shoegaze opus “Panic Song.”  The track followed “I Hate Everything” “Your Love is Alcohol” and “Punishment Existence”— and like its predecessors, “Panic Song” ascends to the stratosphere.
Revisit Greet Death's "Panic Song" on YouTube.
Hailing from Flint, MI, Greet Death’s catalog is an exercise in refraction and reflection. Within a shoegazey haze, their brutally honest subject matter is cleverly cloaked amid soft vocal deliveries and dreamy guitar work. Their songs are lovingly constructed before buckling beneath their own emotional weight.
Greet Death will embark on their North American tour supporting Foxing on July 5th and will have an exciting new announcement coming soon.  For now, keep up with Greet Death on Instagram and catch them on the road through August 13th.

SPICE Slide into the Release of Their LP ‘Viv’ with New Single “Bad Fade”
Look for Viv to be available May 20th on CD, Vinyl + Digital formats from Dais Records. // Watch the “Bad Fade” video now.

"...their uncanny knack for hooks and big riffs, balancing the scrappy sensibilities of ’90s indie rock with its more mainstream counterparts from that same era, but with an immediacy and edge that feels very much of the moment." - Treble
Viv — the second LP by California rock n roll unit SPICE— expands their palette of damaged anthems and addiction poetics with a more bristling, visceral sound, distilled from years in the trenches of bands, break-ups, and breakdowns.  Out next Friday May 20th on Dais Records, Viv alludes to broader notions of vividness— sonic, visual, and otherwise.
What unites and ignites the songs on Viv across different energies and arrangements is their specific sense of emotion— rawness refined into reckonings, approaching truth, born of cold mornings, bad luck, and too many wrong turns. Waking up where you’re not supposed to be, living a life you don’t recognize. Engineered by Jack Shirley and mixed/mastered by Sam Pura in Oakland, the mix achieves that rare balance of every element being elevated but distinct, with voices, strings, and drums each given space to blaze parallel paths.
Today, the album’s third single “Bad Fade” is out with a vivid new music video.

Today, CAVE IN share the new track, “Blood Spiller” alongside a music video filmed and directed by Jordan Olds and Drew Kaufman of Two Minutes To Late Night.
Guitarist/Vocalist Stephen Brodsky comments: “If you laid out the timeline for 2020 like a recipe, it might look something like this: global pandemic + lockdowns + worldwide protests over the wrongful death of George Floyd + election year = cocktail for end times. Somewhere in that concoction, we found ingredients for a new Cave In album. "Blood Spiller" is the sound of us swallowing it, getting ripped on the horrors within, and coming down to reflect on it through song.”

The Northman (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Arriving Digitally on April 22nd via Back Lot Music + Physically on July 1st via Sacred Bones Records.
Robin Carolan & Sebastian Gainsborough collaborate on the score for the Robert Eggers directed film.
Listen to "Storm at Sea / Yggdrasill" now.
Tumblr media
L-R: Robin Carolan, Sebastian Gainsborough.
Composers Robin Carolan (Tri Angle records) and Sebastian Gainsborough (Vessel) were given a task of epic proportions when director Rob Eggers (The VVitch, The Lighthouse) asked them to create the soundtrack for his ambitious and highly anticipated new film The Northman, releasing on April 22nd via Back Lot Music and physically on July 1st via Sacred Bones Records. The Northman, Eggers action-filled epic, follows a young Viking prince on his  quest to avenge his father’s murder and stars Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy,  Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe.
"Robert wanted the world of The Northman to feel harsh and uncomfortable, and for everything to feel like it was caked in mud and dry blood, so it was crucial for the score to mirror that" said the composers.
They needed to make a soundtrack that both honored the immense research that had gone into the authenticity of this Viking-era story and complimented the cinematic maximalism of the film for a modern audience. The artists stretched themselves to the depths of their creativity and the resulting album is a gorgeous sonic tableaux that places the listener right in the center of the film.  Today they're sharing a glimpse of the soundtrack with "Storm at Sea / Yggdrasill.”
Listen to (+ share) "Storm at Sea / Yggdrasill” on YouTube.
Listen via other streaming services here.
While arranging the score, the composers consulted musician and ethnographer Poul Høxbro for inspiration and insight into the history of Viking music. Having backgrounds in left field electronic music, Robin and Sebastian felt liberated by the constraint of using a small selection of musical tools for this piece. "Electronic music has almost limitless potential when it comes to making sounds and that’s obviously an incredible thing, but you can also go down the wormhole and get lost in it sometimes. There’s no risk of that happening when you only have a few primary instruments to draw upon," Robin remarked.
The composers utilized traditional instruments such as the tagelharpa, langspil, kravik lyre, and säckpipa to build the cinematic world of The Northman, but attempted to experiment with what they had as much as possible in order to come up with something that still felt left field leaning. "One of the pieces we wrote was intended to emulate the sound of a bullroarer; an ancient, relatively humble looking instrument used in sacred rituals, or in battle to intimidate enemies. It makes a really disorienting roaring vibrato sound and was capable of creating insanely low frequencies that could travel for miles. For this we attempted to do the same thing, but the twist being that we used a huge, 40 piece string ensemble in order to do so. Recording that made for a pretty mad, suitably unsettling experience.”  Robin says when asked about one of the more unique aspects of the soundtrack. Everyone involved put so much effort into both their research and their creativity and this richness is evident in every track. The album as a whole is a cinematic masterpiece of sound and ambiance, both gorgeous and disturbing, like the film it so beautifully accompanies.

Spirit Adrift Announce 20 Centuries Gone, Premiere “Sorcerer’s Fate”
The new 8-song collection features 2 new originals and 6 cover songs, set for release on August 19th via Century Media. // See Spirit Adrift on tour in the UK + Europe with Yob later this month.

"Spirit Adrift are still ready to take on the world" - SPIN
Spirit Adrift expand their prolific catalog with 20 Centuries Gone, a collection of two new original songs and six cover songs that span the timeline of the band’s most foundational influences. Featuring artwork by Brian Mercer (Lamb of God, High on Fire, Mastodon), and mixed by Zeuss (Overkill, Crowbar, Municipal Waste), this release is a powerful journey through the past, present, and future of trad-metal’s most exciting new band.  On 20 Centuries Gone, Spirit Adrift put their trademark swagger on classics from Type O Negative, Pantera, Metallica, Thin Lizzy, ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd — check out the track listing below.
Spirit Adrift mastermind Nate Garrett comments:  “I always thought it would be a cool experience to record some songs by bands that are foundational to the DNA of Spirit Adrift. These choices are obvious and on the nose to me, but maybe unexpected to the fans.  That made the whole thing a lot of fun.  A band like Lynyrd Skynyrd might not be the first thing you think of when considering Spirit Adrift’s influences, so the task for me became figuring out how to honor these great songs, but in the distinct Spirit Adrift style.  To make the whole thing even more special, I channeled these influences and wrote a couple of new songs to kick things off.  There’s a lyric in "Sorcerer’s Fate" that mentions ‘past and future both aligned,’ and that became the concept here.  The whole thing is presented in reverse chronological order.  That way, you get a sense of where Spirit Adrift is headed, but you’re also taken on a journey back in time through our most fundamental influences. Hope y’all enjoy it!”
Today, Spirit Adrift reveals one of the album’s original songs — “Sorcerer’s Fate” — via a new visualizer.  Garret continues, “When I wrote this one, I was obsessing over the film director William Friedkin. I've been a fan of his since I saw The Exorcist as a kid, but when I discovered the documentary Leap of Faith, it sparked a much deeper interest in the man and his process. I started watching as many of his interviews as I could find, and I read his autobiography which was just amazing. Friedkin's life and art are inseparable. His human experience, search for higher truth, and borderline-psychotic level of obsession/perfectionism all coalesce into his artwork. I relate to that on a profound level. This song is about our search for purpose, and humanity's struggle to understand 'the mysteries of faith and fate.'  Musically, I would say it's one of our heaviest and most straightforward songs. Inspired equally by New Orleans sludge, flipped-cap crossover, and Scandinavian metal, but with the distinct Spirit Adrift sound and approach.”

Death Bells Announce Brilliant New Album, Between Here & Everywhere
Look for the full-length on LP/CD/Digital formats on July 29 from Dais Records. // Watch a video for the transcendent new single “Lifespring” now.
Tumblr media
Artist photo by Kristopher Kirk.
Death Bells — the long-running musical collaboration between Will Canning and Remy Veselis — are thrilled to announce their third full-length album, Between Here & Everywhere. Set for release on July 29th via Dais Records, the LP captures the cross-section of Southern California’s shadowy hidden interzones, outside of the lights and luxury.
The group teased this new full-length with the pre-release of “Intruder” and "Passerby" singles — now, they’ve unveiled another new track from the album, “Lifespring.”  Of the song, Canning comments, “We initially wrote ‘Lifespring’ at a friend’s studio, before the last record was even an idea. I thought I had lost the stems, but discovered them recently on a USB that had been sitting in my jacket pocket for the last few years, so we were able to finally finish the song.”  He continues, “The lyrical inspiration for 'Lifespring' came from reading about a fairly spurious organization of the same name that were around until the mid-90s. Musically, it feels very different from anything we’ve done before; sleazier, groovier.”
Watch (+ share) “Lifespring” on YouTube.
Adopting a collaborative approach for the recording of Between Here & Everywhere, the LP features nine new songs that represent Will Canning and Remy Veselis’ continual growth, as well as accompaniment by an experienced cast of contributors on keys, strings, piano, and operatic backup vocals. Recorded with Colin Knight at Paradise Studios, and mixed by Mike Kriebel at Golden Beat, Between Here & Everywhere bristles with immediacy and emotion, with every element tactile, balanced, and elevated.
Between Here & Everywhere sets out to map the potent mess of Los Angeles. Canning cites the “vastness” of the band’s adopted home as a constant muse, and much like the city itself, the album ebbs gradually from harrowing to hopeful over its 35-minute runtime. The lyrics are categorized as “narrative, but not autobiographical,” born of intrigue, intimacy, and a sense of “looking outward.”
Formed in 2015 in Sydney, Australia, Death Bells has proven to be a mainstay in the alternative underground musical landscape both in their homeland and overseas. Death Bells released their sophomore full-length and Dais Records debut New Signs of Life in September of 2020.  On this record, the group embraced their diverse tastes to deliver unforgettable hooks and more expansive sounds across its nine graceful songs.  Following, and in direct response to the pandemic, Death Bells secluded themselves at Bombay Beach to record and release 5 live recordings of songs from New Signs of Life in April of 2021 —  the gorgeous live performance and recording Live from Bombay.
Revitalized and recentered, Death Bells present Between Here & Everywhere — a dizzying portrait of a band at the height of their powers.
Pre-order Between Here & Everywhere here.  More news coming soon from Death Bells and Dais Records.
Between Here & Everywhere, track listing:
1.  Passerby

These Arms Are Snakes Unveil “Riding the Grape Dragon (Demo)," Announce U.S. Tour Dates
The song appears on their rarities collection Duct Tape & Shivering Crows, out on April 15 via Suicide Squeeze. // See These Arms Are Snakes in select markets this June + July.

As they prepare for the release of their career-spanning, double LP release Duct Tape & Shivering Crows on April 15th, legendary post-hardcore group These Arms Are Snakes reveal a music video for “Riding the Grape Dragon (Demo)" and announce shows in Denver, Chicago, Brooklyn, Oakland and Los Angeles this summer (details below).
Originally appearing on the These Arms Are Snakes demo in 2003, “Riding the Grape Dragon (Demo)” resurfaces today alongside an extraordinary new music video directed by Documavision. Of the single, TAAS bassist/multi-instrumentalist Brian Cook comments, “We recorded our first four songs with Ben Verellen in his basement studio in the Hilltop neighborhood of Tacoma, WA sometime in late 2002 / early 2003. I remember very little of the session other than sleeping beneath the mixing console after a late night of drinking. The four songs were burned onto CD and mailed to every record label we liked. ‘Riding the Grape Dragon’ was the first song our unexpecting recipients would hear, and it was apparently a strong enough song for people to listen to the entire CD and respond to our unsolicited demos. We got a phone call from Jade Tree just a few days after we dropped our demo in the mail… which was surprising given that we’d forgotten to include any contact info in the package. Fortunately, there were enough mutual friends between us and the label that they were able to track us down, and later in the year we’d re-record the four demo songs plus ‘Drinking From The Necks Of The Ones You Love’ for the This Is Meant To Hurt You EP.”

Taken as an overview of These Arms Are Snakes’ career, Duct Tape & Shivering Crows is an exhilarating study of the band’s sonic evolution, varied musical approaches, and consistent quality. Taken without the historical context or typical considerations for a compilation album, it’s still a cohesive and enthralling record with an arc that takes you from the razor-sharp refinement of their final years through the adrenalized prog-punk explorations of their mid-career work and ultimately ramps up to the narcotic frenzy of their earliest material. If you were a These Arms Are Snakes fan back in the day, this is a crucial addition to your library. And even if you were a dilettante or a naysayer, this collection serves as an exciting recontextualization of a band that was often misunderstood and misrepresented by the media. Suicide Squeeze Records is proud to release Duct Tape & Shivering Crows to the world on April 15, 2022 on CD, cassette, digital formats, and 2xLP.

SPICE Uncover Vital New Single, “Recovery”
The Viv album opener surfaces ahead of the LP’s May 20th release on Dais Records. // Watch a music video for the track now.
Tumblr media
"packed with longing and sadness, buried deep beneath the squall of guitar and upbeat melodies" - The FADER
Viv — the second LP by California rock n roll unit SPICE— expands their palette of damaged anthems and addiction poetics with a more bristling, visceral sound, distilled from years in the trenches of bands, break-ups, and breakdowns.  Album opener “Recovery” captures SPICE at their stormy, weathered best, booming drums and East Bay riffs skidding out in a rockslide of rapture, regret, and bruised melody (“You sacrifice perfect days to laugh through the night / you have to get out of bed / and it’s hard / and it’s hard / it’s so hard to admit”).  The single premieres today alongside a music video.

Set for release on May 20th via Dais Records, Viv continues the upward trajectory set for SPICE from their self-titled debut and 2021's "A Better Treatment b/w Everyone Gets In" 7inch.  The album’s first single, “Any Day Now,” embraces the group’s shredded pop potential.  But what unites and ignites these songs across different energies and arrangements is their specific sense of emotion. Rawness refined into reckonings, approaching truth, born of cold mornings, bad luck, and too many wrong turns.
Viv is available for pre-order here.
SPICE, Viv track listing:
1.  Recovery
2.  Any Day Now
3.  Ashes in the Birdbath
4.  Threnody
5.  Melody Drive
6.  Dining Out
7.  Live Scene

Greg Anderson Prepares to Unleash His First Full-Length Under ‘The Lord’ Moniker
Digital Pre-orders and more are available from Bandcamp.
Tumblr media
On April 23rd, Southern Lord will release the debut full-length album from The Lord—Forest Nocturne— first as a special LP Record Store Day release, and then on digital and further LP formats on July 29th.
Forest Nocturne sees Anderson (guitarist of SUNN O))), Goatsnake & Southern Lord curator) taking cues from legendary film composers: John Carpenter and Bernard Hermann, in order to create cinematic landscapes which are heavy with tension, and offset by the injection of lethal doses of early 90s Scandinavian Death Metal - with Attila Csihar (of notorious Norwegian black metal band Mayhem & frequent SUNN O))) collaborator) lending his putrid vocals to final track "Triumph of the Oak."
For Forest Nocturne, Anderson worked with renowned producer Brad Wood. Dan Seagrave's epic and fantastical style is instantly recognizable on the album's startling artwork, something which seems to depict an ancient and unknowable force in the woodlands. Forest Nocturne is described by Anderson as “music of the night,” but inspired by imagery conjured on daytime hikes, and majestic, beautiful trees, which he sees as survivors— perhaps the last known connection that we have to an ancient world, and acting as a connector between past, present and future of the human race and of our time on this planet.
Following the release of Forest Nocturne in April and July, The Lord plans to release another full length later in the year with collaborator Petra Haden (vocals, violin), who first worked with Anderson during his time in Goatsnake, as well as on the second SUNN O))) studio album, ØØ Void. Further details on this in the coming months.
Listen to the official audio for “Triumph of the Oak” on Bandcamp.
Greg Anderson began making music in the mid-eighties with hardcore bands False Liberty and Brotherhood before refining his musicality during the nineties with the post-hardcore collective Engine Kid. From that point on, the musical direction started shifting, channelling his love of tone, riffs and repetitive sound, vital elements that feed into the meditative cosmos of SUNN O))), and the ‘low and slow’ sounds of Goatsnake, both of whom find different ways to move beyond confines and tropes of their respective sound worlds.
In August and September 2021 respectively, Greg Anderson released two singles under the name The Lord; "Needle Cast" with Robin Wattie (the unmistakably emotive vocalist of BIG|BRAVE) and "We Who Walk In Light" with William Duvall (of Seattle rock legends Alice In Chains and hardcore-punk group Neon Christ). Unintentionally moving in a different direction from those bands within which he found his feet, Anderson was able to take on the mantle of The Lord in a new, pictorial approach to heavy music. Through this process, he found himself moved to collaborate with vocalists he admires.

Cave In Share New Song “Blinded By A Blaze”
Their new album Heavy Pendulum is out May 20th on Relapse Records. / Pre-order here.
Tumblr media
Boston legends CAVE IN makes a highly anticipated return with their Relapse Records debut, Heavy Pendulum, their first full studio record in over a decade. Today, CAVE IN shares the second single “Blinded By A Blaze” with an accompanying video featuring album artwork by Richey Beckett combined with live footage by Frank Huang from 3 sold out shows at Saint Vitus Bar/Brooklyn NY in 2021.
Guitarist/Vocalist Stephen Brodsky comments: "I had the idea for 'Blinded By A Blaze' during the Final Transmission days, but it really came to life for Heavy Pendulum. There were 5 or 6 songs in the initial batch of demos that I sent to the band at the beginning of the writing process, but 'Blinded' was the one that created a call to action - it's basically what sold JR, Adam & Nate on writing a new Cave In album. Lyrically, it's a sonic photograph of a strange magical moment that I had while driving along the Pacific Coast Highway during the golden hour, and the feeling of looking back on it years later - something everyone should try to experience at least once in their lifetime."

Revisit Cave In's “New Reality” music video (directed by Michael Gilday) on YouTube.

Sunn O))) Release Metta, Benevolence.  BBC 6Music: Live on the Invitation of Mary Anne Hobbs. on Double LP format
Available on CD and digitally last November, this epic release is available on vinyl today from Southern Lord. // Watch an unboxing video to check out the excellent packaging now.
Tumblr media
Paintings by Samantha Keely Smith.
In late October 2019, following a successful UK tour ending in a sold-out concert at the mythical Roundhouse in London, SUNN O))) entered studio 4 of the BBC Maida Vale on invitation to record a live session for Mary Anne Hobbs to be broadcast on Samhain via her excellent radio show on BBC6. To enter the legendary John Peel studios was to enter a temple of music and experimentation, liberty in ideas and sound.
The band was nearing the end of a long touring year around the Life Metal and Pyroclasts albums (of which Anna Von Hausswolff and her band had accompanied SUNN O))) on the UK tour, and Anna joined SUNN O))) in the studio on synths and with her tremendous voice). SUNN O))) had developed their compositions extensively, embracing the formative concepts of the Life Metal album conceptually and emotionally, but actualized and evolved into vast, open and bright hyper-saturated arrangements. Particularly the pieces the band chose to perform on this recording: Troubled Air and Pyroclasts. The former enriched into a total aspect of the band's ethos and form in many ways, and Pyroclasts had evolved to become all-inclusive radiation of O))). The radiation embraces collaboration and freedom of interpretation by each player, within a structural format of the massive monuments of sound and distortion which define SUNN O))).
The recordings of this session—  Metta, Benevolence.  BBC 6Music: Live on the Invitation of Mary Anne Hobbs.— were released on CD and digital formats last November via Southern Lord and today, the long-awaited double LP version is finally available.

Absent In Body (Current and former members of Amenra, Neurosis, Sepultura) Announce Debut Album, Plague God, out March 25th
Watch a music video for first single “The Acres/The Ache” now.
Tumblr media
ABSENT IN BODY make their Relapse Records debut with the terrifying new album Plague God, out March 25, 2022 on LP/CD/CS/Digital (pre-orders available here).
Featuring current and former members of AMENRA, NEUROSIS, and SEPULTURA, Plague God is bound by the same ideals of unity and fearlessly uncompromising honesty of expression that have driven their respective bands to imperious heights of reverence and groundbreaking sonic deliverance. Plague God is by turns devastating and sublime, drawn from musicians for whom life and art are inextricably bound.
Mathieu Vandekerckhove comments:
“We had not imposed any limitations or boundaries on ourselves to create this music.
Everything happened without any compromise, we gathered and let inspiration run freely.
It is the beauty and the strength of this album.”
Iggor Cavalera comments:
"It feels great to collaborate with such forward-thinking minds like Colin, Mathieu, and Scott on AIB. The music is dense and slowly brutal, very similar to the times we are living."

MORE INFO:
In an era overrun by information, misinformation, unseen algorithms and viral contagion, to seek out what’s truly human in the face of overwhelming and unfathomable forces has perhaps become our most sacred of tasks. It’s an impulse that lies at the very heart of Plague God, the debut album from Absent In Body – the oppressive, industrial-driven collaboration by members of AMENRA, NEUROSIS and SEPULTURA. Bound by the same ideals of unity and fearlessly uncompromising honesty of expression that have driven their respective bands to imperious heights of reverence and groundbreaking sonic deliverance, Plague God is by turns devastating and sublime, drawn from musicians for whom life and art are inextricably bound.
Initially the brainchild of AMENRA guitarist Mathieu J. Vandekerckhove, and NEUROSIS vocalist/guitarist Scott Kelly, ABSENT IN BODY formed in 2017. Immediately recognising their kinship, and with AMENRA frontman Colin H. Van Eeckhout brought in on vocals and bass, what emerged is a reflection of the intervening years of turbulence, extending it's scope as it navigates across five stretches of unstable terrain. From the opening “Rise From Ruins” with ex-Sepultura drummer, Iggor Cavalera’s tribal beat emerging from foreboding, near-subsonic oscillations to explode in a tide of corrosive riffs and feral howls, through “Sarin’s” steadfast, procession-through-purgatory groove, to “The Half Rising Man’s” matrix of organic/mechanic evolution, it’s an album in constant dialogue between the animalistic, the human and the industrial, and a hunger to distill a truth, something unpolluted from the fray.
Protest music is often perceived as a petition, or a counter-argument against a controlling force. There is another sense of protest, though, that of a machine under stress: articulating the pressures weighing down on it by means of an involuntary, primal response. It’s these states of critical mass at which we must truly find ourselves, under duress maybe, but unblinded and alive. Plague God doesn’t just give voice to these moments of truth, but in the band’s deep kinship integral to every claustrophobic judder, every stretch of atmospheric dread and helpless alias assumed, lies a freedom we both forget and attain at our peril.
Recorded and produced by Tim De Gieter, Much luv studio BE
Mastered by Jack Shirley, Atomic Garden USA
