Review of G5 Make Your Mark, Chapter 5 Ep 2: "Family Trees Part 1"
Summary: Misty has a bad dream . . . or is it a vision? Her friends take her to Bridlewood and she begins to remember a little about her past. Also, her magic awakens the Wishing Tree, summoning the Breezies for the first time in generations!
General thoughts: I almost skipped the theme song of this episode (which I never do, except I had brownies in the oven and didn't want the timer to interrupt my viewing) but I'm glad I didn't because it's been updated with Misty looking happy instead of meek next to Opaline, and subsequently running up with the rest of the main cast. Love it!
In general, the storytelling feels much tighter and more focused than in previous chapters, probably because now they don't have to do a splitscreen between Misty and the other ponies.
Anyway, Misty's dream is of herself as a filly chasing a bunny until she stumbles down a ravine. She sees a huge tree in front of her with a door in it, but before she can open it a mysterious, shadowy figure approaches and she wakes up screaming. My first thought was that this was probably Opaline finding her as a filly, but Zipp voices that same thought, which makes me think it's actually NOT Opaline. (More on this later!)
So if you recall the Manesquerade episode, there was a moment when Alphabittle leans forward and squints when he catches a glimpse of Misty, but he only gets a brief glance because another pony gets in the way. I speculated that this meant he either knew Misty way back when or was related to her, and I think I was right! My guess is he's her father. (And if not, then a close relative like an uncle.) However, as of the end of the episode he and Misty haven't met yet.
Part of the subplot of this episode was that Zipp starts fixating on the vision to the point of needling Misty. It makes sense that Zipp's greatest strengths (her analytic nature, no-nonsense attitude, and sense of responsibility) are also her greatest weaknesses. When Zipp gets too overbearing Misty pushes back and says she doesn't want to think about the vision anymore (which she would never have done with Opaline, so that's growth!) and Sunny shows her social skills by offering support to Misty and putting Zipp in check.
I also enjoy Sunny's stink eye here, lol.
I have a lot of thoughts on Misty's memories / visions, but first let's talk about BREEZIES!
Breezies are little fairy ponies who live in / tend to flowers. They originated in G3 and also appeared in G4.
These breezies live inside the Wishing Tree and haven't seen other ponies in hundreds of moons (years); inside the tree is the Night Market. Great name, very D&D.
The breezies go out of their way to go to the teashop and invite Alphabittle, Queen Haven, and the patrons to the Night Market. I'm curious if they know about Alphabittle's connection to Misty or if they're just inviting everyone in Bridlewood.
They do seem to have special knowledge relating to Misty, as one of the breezies takes her aside and offers her a magic key . . . one that has the same shape as the door in her dream. "This enchanted key will take you to the place you most want to go. One use only."
OKAY, now for my theories on Misty's dream / memories. I think the door is metaphorical and the key will unlock her memories of what really happened.
As to what did happen: we know that Twilight Sparkle set up an "invisibubble" spell around Equestria to hide and protect the land from Opaline. Misty's memories involve her running to and fro as someone calls her name. "I'm right here! Why can't they hear me?" she cries. She also talks about getting lost in the forest and when she returned Bridlewood was "just gone." Finally, there is a memory of her in a crowded marketplace in Bridlewood, but she's panicked and getting jostled around. No one looks at her or acknowledges her.
So my guess is Misty accidentally stumbled out of the magical barrier protecting Equestria and--since she was on the "wrong" side of the invisibubble at that point--couldn't perceived / return to Equestria. (Maybe she was able to physically enter it, but her perception was altered and the other ponies couldn't see her.) And my guess is the tall shadowy shape in her dream is Alphabittle, her dad (or whatever) and the nightmarish part is that he can't see her.
I can't wait to watch Part 2 and see if I was right!

Random thoughts:
When Misty first arrives at the Brighthouse and the other ponies think Opaline is about to attack, Hitch immediately runs over to cradle Sparky. In fact, he consistently looks preoccupied and worried even when the other ponies are relaxed (like when Pipp films her outro for her "mega pega mindfulness" day, where he fakes a smile when the camera is on him.) His anxiety is palpable.
Speaking of which, I am pretty neutral on Sparky (don't love him, don't hate him) but it was truly unsettling seeing him so unenthused and low energy. And of course it's painful seeing Hitch so worried. So good job building that tension.
Zipp hiding from Izzy's enthusiasm
"thank moons for that!" "ooo, listen to that unicorn-speak!" I am taking notes. I want to know more about unicorn-speak. I want to be a unicorn too.
I love the unicorns relationship with their tree homes, where they are "tasked with tending the tree and leaving it more beautiful than they found it."
"It's okay, Cloudpuff, these are . . . ponies. *dubious side-eye*"
MYM usually struggles with liquid physics, but this episode had perfume etc sloshing around in bottles very realistically, nice job animators!
I'm fairly sure that's Twilight Sparkle's telescope in the background
Sunny's bad "inside this tree" joke was very endearing, she is out-dadding Hitch with that dad joke
me taking a deep breath, about to bombard you with my Transformers headcanons

Sorta continuation of this, here's some observations on how the bsd anime adaptation rate (average of number of chapters adapted per episode) changed every season:
Season 1: 10 plot episodes + 2 ln adaptation. Adapts up to chapter 16. Average of chapters adapted per episode: 1.60
Season 2: 8 plot episodes + 4 ln adaptation. Adapts chapters 17-37 (21 chapters). Average of chapters adapted per episode: 2.63 (+1.03)
Season 3: 9 plot episodes + 3 ln adaptation. Adapts chapters 38-39 & 41-53 (15 chapters). Average of chapters adapted per episode: 1.67 (-0.96)
Season 4: 10 plot episodes + 3 ln adaptation. Adapts chapters 54-77 (24 chapters). Average of chapters adapted per episode: 2.40 (+0.73)
※ I opted out of counting the Hitori Ayumi OVA this time around, reasoning that the factors that play into conditioning the season episodes adaptation rate wouldn't have influenced the OVA given its nature of stand-alone episode.
Seasons 1-3 adaptation rate: 27 plot episodes, 52 adapted chapters. Average of chapters adapted per episode: 1.93
Season 4 adaptation rate compared to the average of all the previous seasons: 2.40 (+0.47)
Seasons 1-4 overall adaptation rate: 37 plot episodes, 76 adapted chapters. Total average of chapters adapted per episode: 2.05
That being said, let's try to guess how season 5 might play out taking in the previous four seasons adaptation rate of 2.05 as standard. Here's the fun thing: if season 5 is just 12 / 13 episodes of plot adaptation, that would mean adapting up to chapter 102 / 104. Coincidentally, chapter 104 (fukufuku flashback) is also the furthest in the manga plot that was shown in the last season 5 trailer. Feel free to draw your own conclusions, but as of now a new light novel adaptation seems positively unlikely and a Stormbringer adpatation basically impossible to make fit.
