your colors and lighting are just so perfect; would you consider going thru how you pick them out?

thank u sm!! ill try to keep it concise but its a combo of preplanning via thumbnails + color theory,

i prefer to think about color as another layer of decoration on top of value, so i try to get the values right before i color so i know im not going to mess up how things read. some colors are naturally darker than others (eg purple relative to yellow), so if im not sure what needs to be light and what needs to be dark beforehand i can easily confuse myself! to avoid this problem i try to start my work with a thumbnail sketch to get down the lighting/foreground/background/composition etc., before i commit to drawing the actual piece.

ill usually make several kinds of thumbnails: black/white only, black/white/gray, then a color thumbnail in that order. since ive previously planned where the shadows and light should go, all i need to think about when making the last color thumbnail is how to preserve the look of the previous monochromatic thumbnails. once im happy w all my thumbnails, then ill start coloring the full piece.

but ofc everyones process is different, this is just what works for me… and i dont even do this all the time, sometimes ill just get lazy and wing it LOL but i hope my perspective on how i think about it is at least somewhat informative!! thank u for asking ^^
