Long Live the King | Chapter 1 | Trial Start

For the last little while, you have been searching for clues as to Francis’ murder. It is a duty that should have never fallen to you. Not a single one of you is trained, and while you do have the minor assistance of a medical professional, Shroud only really told you the cause of death. Figuring out what led up to that is the real challenge. So, for the past two hours or so, you and a group of your fellow Incarnates have been looking around.

But the search comes to an end where to hear the tree rumble to life. “The investigation period is over. Please make your way to the Summoning Circle.”

The Summoning Circle? Are they going to make you do this stupid trial in water up to your ankles? Luckily no. It’s an odd sight, especially for those of you who had been inspecting the Summoning Circle only a few minutes before. Along each of the smaller circles where you first woke, you find a raised desk and chair have been set up. The chairs are tall enough to keep your feet out of the dark and chilly water, and each desk is equipped with a pad of paper, a quill, and an inkwell.

Above the center of the circle floats the illuminating orb from the lounge, cutting through the dark and the fog to illuminate the whole circle of desks. Directly below it, Amber’s puppet body extrudes from the roots, Kali perched on her shoulder.

“Please take your seats. Each one has been labeled accordingly. Please do not leave your seats without permission during the trial,” Amber glumly requests. She seems downtrodden and very uneasy, but is facilitating this trial anyway. 

Arms folded, Kali scowls disapprovingly out at the group of you. “You heard the lady! Move it, and don’t waste your time whining at her!” Seems that Amber’s misery has once again spurred Kali into irascible protectiveness. Though not violence yet, mercifully.

“Please don’t forget,” Amber mutters, just loud enough to be heard. “The majority of you need to correctly identify the killer. Failure to do so, and someone else will have to be executed in their place. Please make your decisions carefully.”

“Also obviously, an attempt at violent escape will mean I have to stop you. I have a job to do and whatnot,” Alvarie grumbles from the front of the area, where she stands with her arms folded. Or is “front” even the right word?

Uneasily, your group files towards your various seats. There’s not much time, and if you fail here, an innocent soul will be taking on the burden of the murderer. Best get it right…

14.4) Conditional Forms (と)

The last conditional form we will talk about is the conditional と particle. First though, it’s important to distinguish between this usage and other usages of the と particle. Just like に and で, there are many ways you will see/hear the conditional と used!

Below are 6 sentences that use the と particle, but NOT the conditional と.

Also, I already wrote a post about the conditional と particle that you can read here. In this post I’m going to be looking at conditional と in a different way. Here is your vocabulary:

【The Grammar of と】

The conditional と particle can attach to verbs, adjectives and noun-copula pairs (but only in the form of noun+だ).

【Did It Happen Or Not?】

When you look at sentences with the conditional と, there are two possibilities when it comes to the second clause:

If we think of this with English counterparts, here are two examples:

[Case1] When / If water reaches 100℃, it boils.

[Case2] When I walked in the room, the students stopped talking.

In case 1, the event in the first clause (water reaching 100℃) inevitably leads to the event in the second clause (it boiling). That is to say, the second clause hasn’t actually happened yet... but if the first clause happens, it will. 

Compare that to case 2, where both events have already happened. This is a big difference between the two cases. Now, here are some Japanese examples:

①｛この道をまっすぐ行くと｝、｛銀行があります｝。

= when/if the/this street go straight, there will be a bank

= When/if you go straight down this street, there will be a bank.

②｛成績が悪いと｝、｛学校を卒業できないよ｝。

= when/if grades are bad, can’t graduate from school, you know 

= When/if your grades are bad, you can’t graduate.

③｛学校に行くと｝｛休みだった｝。

= when go to school, it was rest

= When I went to school, it was closed.

【The Timing of と】

Another thing to think about when using the conditional と is the timing of the events. と gives the nuance that both happen almost at the same time.

④｛天気がいいと｝｛気分がいい｝。

= when/if the weather is good, feel good

= I feel good when/if the weather is good. 

Example 4 is saying that the weather being good directly leads to the speaker also feeling good. The nuance of the timing is that as soon as or soon after the weather is good, the speaker feels good. Sometimes, this means that you can translate the と as “once”.

We will come back to this idea of timing when we compare the conditional forms. 😉

【When or If?】

In general, if the second clause is in past form, the English translation will use “when”. 

Here are two more examples:

⑤ 一日中｛パソコンを使うと｝、｛目が痛くなります｝。

= all day when/if use a computer, eyes hurt

= When / If I use the computer all day, my eyes hurt.

⑥ 毎朝｛起きると｝｛コーヒーを飲む｝。

= every day when wake up, drink coffee

= Every day when I wake up, I drink coffee.

For example 5, there won’t be a difference if you think of the と as “if” or as “when”. However, there is a HUGE difference between “when I wake up” and “if I wake up”! This shows that the action or adjective in the first clause is the key to the English translation. Some words will naturally translate to “if”, and some words will naturally translate to “when”. Many words though, can use either and make sense.

【〜ないと】

The last thing we should talk about is the “warning” usage of conditional と. Because the conditional と expresses a natural consequence or an inevitability, it is often attached to the negative form of a verb in order to warn the listener of some... negative consequence. An extension of this is indicating the speaker’s responsibility or duty to do something.

There are three kinds of clauses you will see / hear after a ないと clause: (1) a grammatically positive phrase with a negative meaning or (2) a grammatically negative phrase with a negative meaning. Here are some examples:

だめ simply means “it’s not good”. 

〜してしまう has a nuance of something unexpected happening. For example if you use the verb 参る with しまう, you get 参ってしまう which means “unexpectedly collapse or fall down”.

〜してはいけない is a roundabout way of saying “don’t do 〜”. For example if you use the verb 忘れる in this construction you get 忘れてはいけない. This basically means “don’t forget”.

〜なければならない means “have to do 〜”. If you use the word 再考する in this construction, you will get 再考しなければならない。This means “have to reconsider”. 

Finally, 〜できない means “can’t do 〜”

Here are some examples with Japanese sentences:

⑦｛早く起きないと｝｛遅刻するよ｝。

= in an early way, if don’t get up, will do lateness

= If I don’t get up early, I’ll be late!

⑧｛アンに謝らないと｝｛いけない｝。

= to Ann, if I don’t apologize, it won’t go/do

= I have to apologize to Ann.

Notice how clause 2 in example 7 is grammatically positive (遅刻する) but has a negative meaning. On the other hand, clause 2 in example 8 is negative (いけない) and also has a negative meaning. This is something you will see quite often after a ないと phrase.

The third possibility for what comes after a ないと clause is... nothing! Japanese often avoids being direct by simply not saying a phrase or a word. With ないと clauses, everyone knows that the following clause is something negative so it’s ok to just not say anything. The listener or reader can use their imagination to figure out the negative consequence(s). Here is an example:

⑨｛そろそろ寝ないと｝。

= well... soon if don’t sleep...

= Well... I need to sleep soon.

First off, we don’t actually know who the subject is in example 9 but we can assume that it is the speaker though. The speaker intentionally leaves off the second clause. We don’t actually know what will happen if he/she doesn’t sleep but because of the ないと, we know it won’t be good!

【Conclusion】

Drabble 2 of many Swap TGAA AU posts

Now, for a more coherent outline/ timeline of the au events. Major Spoilers Ahead

Part 1. Part 3

Case1-1

Nothing much would really change. So I will instead use this section to sort of outline the theme/ focus of this au would be. With our new main character being Kazuma, it would probably focus more on his short comings and insecurities and how he lets them rule his actions. It's been a while since I've finished the game, but I recall Kazuma stating he received a letter (probably from a grieving Van Zieks) cursing his family when he was young.

This would be what I imagine the inciting incident that gave Kazuma a perfectionist complex. Determined to prove his father innocent and that his family is not cursed. Sadly, with each mistake he makes and misfortunes he endures, he fears that those words may have been right all along. Can't help but feel guilty that on the day he invites Naruhodo out to dine and celebrate his trip to England that he is arrested for murder. Though it doesn't even compare to the agony he feels when...

Case 1-2

Ryuunosuke dies. Again not much would really change. I imagine if I were to ever write the fic, small changes would have to take place like Ryuu and Kazuma sharing the chicken meal and wat not. Probably also have Kazuma spill the beans that Hasunaga is on the ship as his bodyguard. With these events happening it would give probably cause for the ballet dancer (can't remember her name now) to feel threatened and hurt Ryuunosuke. Probably because Ryuunosuke unfortunately mumbles to himself about expecting the inspector to come by.

(for those who don't know, in an extra chapter that wasn't released overseas, its revealed that the reason everyone is able to read Ryuu so well is that half the time he mumbles his thoughts out loud, watch it if u get the chance it's very funny and VERY gay)

Kazuma is suspected of murder of course, and most events don't change. During this chapter, I would say that Sherlock Holmes is probably insistent at first for Kazuma to head back to Japan to bury his friend, mainly in an effort to protect him. Remember, at this time, Sherlock knew about the letter but assumed it was a hit list at first and that Kazuma was going to be killed in England. Sherlock's initial plan, being that on his way back to Japan his friend would wake up (and they'd all have a happy little reunion), but it would be too late to go back, thus giving him enough time to hopefully weed out the horrific threat. Unfortunately, two unexpected things happen when they arrive at the Sheghai port,

1.) Sherlock gets an emergency telegram from Mikotoba explaining what happened to Watson

2.) Ryuunosuke's body has disappeared

Paranoia sets in, and Sherlock realizes his has to improvise. Japan is no longer as safe as he thought, so now he thinks about what he can do to make sure Mikotoba's, his husband's partner's kids, are safe. So, like his moods, he completely shifts gears and starts to insist that Kazuma goes to England in dedication to his friend. He figures rather than risk his safety on a ship that could be ambushed. He takes on the task of looking after the kids himself. Kazuma is completely distraught over Ryuu's "death," a voice in his head telling him that his is a curse to all who know him. But after some discussion, he decides to continue on with his journey and takes Ryuu's arm guards as a momento.

Tropes of Covid-worrier Twitter:

Shibboleths

"Covid is airborne!" - that the virus is spread through exhaled aerosols, not airborne moisture droplets or surface-tainting "fomites". A point they were genuinely more right on than authorities early on that still has some application – that only N95-type masks or respirators reliably stop transmission, not fabric or paper surgical masks. However, largely an ingroup signal at this point, they seem to believe that authorities not pointedly declaring it apropos of nothing causes or constitutes failure.

Corsi-Rosenthal Boxes: a DIY air filter made of box fans and furnace filters, because above. They love these things and are always frustrated that schools and public places won't welcome wild-eyed maniacs trying to set up their own homemade science fair projects everywhere.

CO2 testing: they carry around little CO2 monitors and are always tutting about how high the readings they get are, less in their own right than because it's a clear sign of a poorly ventilated space where exhalations are not being cleared. Once again, makes them look like maniacs.

"SARS-CoV-2": they kind of performatively always call Covid this, even using more characters of a tweet. I dunno if the intention was to differentiate the syndrome from the virus, or if putting it in the SARS lineage was supposed to draw on residual associations there, but by now it mostly seems like flaunting yourself as savvy.

Something there but iffy

That danger and damage increases with multiple infections. It is true that Danger(Case1 + Case2) > Danger(Case1), which means that Case2 (and subsequents) has some nonzero risk, but they often act like Danger(Case1) < Danger(Case2), which I don't see as well established at all.

Pretty convinced

The danger of Covid now lies largely not in the initial "acute" respiratory infection, but in the chance of later "long Covid" progression to other organ systems, that may render the sufferer vulnerable to later mortality. Damaged heart muscles lead to later heart attacks; blood vessels to strokes & aneurysm; immune systems to later infection (as seems to be making this winter an atrocious pediatric respiratory infection season, or made Jair Bolsonaro an infection piñata). I myself can attest to later blood pressure swings that cause fainting. That this explains much of the increase in "all-cause mortality" above and beyond that attributed to Covid itself since the beginning of the pandemic.

Not convinced

Immunity from prior infections or immunization does not durably reduce the severity of future ones. This is out of keeping with the experience of other coronaviruses already in regular human circulation and mutating into new variants, which after caught repeatedly throughout life become trivial. My own experience has my current infection (somewhere from my 4th to 6th, producing symptom "echoes" of the "long" portions of 1 and 2) as the worst since 2, but 2 was much less harsh than 1 and 3-current was nothing. I suspect this might be a stronger case against the background of a generally decreasing trend of severity. Also it might be the case that immunity wanes so subsequent cases are easier if they occur before it wears off (and leaves new immunity of its own), in which case attempts to stop any particular case with masking, isolation, or air treatment might make population-level health worse by lengthening average time between infections past acquired immunity duration.

"Schools should have been reworking their ventilation systems for anti-viral effect!" My father was the solicitor for our school district, in which capacity one of the things he worked with was contracting. At one point the district upgraded ventilation systems in maybe a third of their secondary schools at once. From scoping through passing a bond, soliciting and evaluating bids to work completion (when the construction market was slack enough for contractors to hire labor and buy materials cheap) was 8 years. In a small subset of schools, that already had ductwork at all, in a rich school district where the bond passed on the first try. To attempt this for every school building in the US – let alone other public places – would likely exceed the national HVAC construction capacity for decades. The only precedent I can think of, the drive to rework hospital ventilation systems against Legionnaires, affected far fewer buildings and institutions that were then fairly flush with income streams atop the healthcare economy, still required extensive federal subsidy, and was ongoing decades later.

My (Unnecessary) Feelings about Miles Edgeworth: The Saga

Presented without context as I play the Ace Attorney trilogy for the first time. Spoilers ahead!

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Case 1-2: Miles Edgeworth makes his debut as a prosecutor with a winning record.  He’s arrogant and smug. I’m not sure if I like him when he’s clearly trying to get Maya and later Phoenix put in jail.  What do you mean, updated autopsy report?!  He’s corrupt as the summer days are long.  I don’t understand all the fanart featuring him.

Case1-3: I’m laughing.  His witnesses are giving him a hard time and I’m laughing.  Edgeworth takes major Ls in this case but he still puts up as much of a legal fight as possible.  He actually helps Nick this time around towards the end of the case, which was a surprise!  Maybe he’s not so bad after all. (And all the fan artists and fic writers have a point.)

Case 1-4: I immediately want to defend him.  Edgeworth is a lot of things but I didn’t want to believe he was a murderer. Knowing how cold hearted Manfred von Karma is, made me even more protective of him.  And what’s worse, Edgeworth wants to try and convict himself for his own living nightmare!  I was so relieved when he was found Not Guilty, both for the Gourd Lake case and DL-6. His smile group picture, his awkward but genuine thanks and his brief moment of cheering for the new year before hanging his head endeared him to me so much.  I cried tears of joy experiencing this scene.  He’s definitely my favorite without a shadow of a doubt!  I fully understand all the WrightWorth fanart, as well as the individual Miles Edgeworth art. He’s a fandom favorite for a reason!

Case 1-5 (first and second attempts): Despair, anguish, hopelessness. I cried sad tears, twice.  I want to defend him but I can’t. Politics are getting the better of him (and me too.)  I know actions aren’t free of consequences but the narrative seems to go out of its way to doom Edgeworth even though he’d just been saved.  He’s in his worst mood and outlook in this case.  Him taking the L is no longer a joke.

Case 1-5 (reprise, finale): A hope spot with a whole lot of angst.  The hope comes in that even though he’s put in a tight spot, Edgeworth still finds small ways to help Phoenix look for the truth, in and out of court.  He’s trying his best in a very grim situation!  He’s truly resilient.  But he’s not able to accept others reaching out to him (yet?)  He’s not able to grow (yet??)  Even though this case was added later and game 1 was supposed to end with case 1-4, it sure paints a clear picture as to what will happen in the second game when he goes missing.  It’s a rather sad picture.

Ace Attorney: Justice for All

Case 2-2: The first hint that he’s disappeared/he’s gone.  It’s Franziska von Karma we face off with in court (and if I remember right), Phoenix’s inner monologue makes it seem like Edgeworth died.  I refused to believe it because there is no evidence, of course!

Case 2-3, Investigation Day 1: Second hint that Edgeworth has disappeared/is gone.  Gumshoe confirms it.  He’s incredibly cagey about it, which is unlike our normally talkative detective.  The way it’s framed also implies character death, but there is still no evidence.  I have background knowledge that Edgeworth has not one, but two spin off games, more appearances in the first trilogy and a presence in the later trilogy as an NPC, so I know on a meta level he survived.  But from an early story perspective, I still have yet to figure out how he survived.  He has some major explaining to do!

Ghost of Forms

Case1. 鉱物（惑星の欠片）/ Minerals (planetary fragments)

吸い込まれそうに透明なもの、

深く澄んだもの、鮮やかなもの、

明るいもの、暗く輝くものなど、

さまざまな色や形の鉱石。

その小さな多面体の中は、

ときに夕日に照らされた砂浜や水面、

あるいは星の最期の瞬間のようだ。

なぜ自然はこのような美しい形が

とれるのだろうか。

かたちを作るための見えない力が

働いているとしか思えない。

100年前、ルドルフ・シュタイナー

という人が面白いことを言った。

「私たちの周りには、

フォルムの精神が存在している。

また、フォルムの背後には

運動の精神が存在する」

結晶の背後にも、形をつかさどる何かが

運動しているのかもしれない。

だから自然のものすべては、自らの法則に従って

リズミカルに増殖していくのだ。

それは幽霊のように目には見えず、

線と力の組織として、

大気中を漂っているのかもしれない。

It is invisible to the eye like a ghost.but drifting through the atmosphere as a tissue of lines and forces.

Long Live the King || Case 1 Body Announcement

On Day 4, Francis performs her role as King of the Food patiently and without bias. No one goes hungry, or at least no one goes unfed. But, the tension always remains. Who will be chosen next? Will it be Perry, who's actually good at cooking? Will it be Nao, who seems like a complete wildcard? Will it be, horror of horrors, Manami?

The question plagues you as Day 5 approaches, but it is ultimately destined to go unanswered.

Right before midnight, at 11:48, Amber's voice echoes through the tree in a mournful announcement. "A body has been discovered. Please make your way to the practice dungeon..."

As ever, vines coax you there if you're unwilling. When you arrive on the scene at the practice dungeon, though, it's a wretched sight.

Illuminated dimly by one of the last torches, Francis Foxe lies on the ground, swords scattered around her in a distressingly large pool of blood. You only need one blade to kill somebody, as you've been unpleasantly reminded of by Kali and by what took place in the swamp... just who went this far overboard?!

Kali is also here, hovering smugly near the entrance. Great, that's the last thing you need. At least she doesn't say anything, just ushers you forward.

Midway between the entrance doors and the body is Harriet, standing in front of Frank with her shoulders tensed. “You’re so full of shit—“ she starts, only to be interrupted by the commotion of the others’ arrival. She turns to the newly gathered group and puts her hands on her hips, her brow furrowed. “About time you guys show up. I got the killer right here.” Harriet jabs a finger at Frank, roughly poking him in the sternum.

“Aah…. AAAAH!” Bian is collapsed on the floor, her scythe thrown haphazardly towards her left. She’s rocking from side to side in a failing attempt at self soothing while dark makeup runs down her cheeks. She seems completely disoriented, and unaware of the current squabble.

Frank is standing near Bian, about to help but is interrupted at Harriet's accusation. "What the fuck is wrong with you?!" He slaps her hand away and looks to everyone else. "Don't listen to a word she says, it wasn't-" He glances at Francis' body, looking ill. "It wasn't me. Harriet's talking out of her ass."

Finally, squatting beside Francis' body is an individual you've never seen before. They wear a short black cloak and a tall wide-brimmed hat. Unperturbed by the hysterics, they chant something softly while making sweeping hand gestures over the body. A witch of some sort, perhaps?

The figure finally stands, and as they get closer to the light you abruptly notice that every visible body part of theirs appears to be made of wood painted white. They look like a living doll. Based on their puppet-like movements, you're pretty sure they're exactly that. Their features are inexpertly painted in black on their flat wooden face, and the fact that these features are merely pigment does not at all stop them from moving when they open their mouth to speak.

"Evening," the figure announces, in a velvety masculine voice at odds with his roughly-hewn appearance. "I am Shroud, the appointed coroner. My sincerest condolences for your loss tonight. I have completed the autopsy." Shroud withdraws a piece of paper from within his cloak and offers it to the nearest new arrival. "Feel free to peruse the details at your leisure. It is my fervent hope that this information is of use to you." He bows jerkily. "I have also prepared the sacrifice for your investigation. She, and her pool of sorrowfully stagnant lifeblood, will remain exactly as they were found."

Kali chooses this moment to chime in. "All right, heroes-in-training! Paperwork's out of the way. You know what happens next." She points at Francis' body. "You got two hours to look around before trial, starting... NOW! Get to it!"
