Summer of Strawberry Shortcake: Best Pets Yet!

And so we begin season two of the 2003 reboot, when it got an actual TV series, but always kept the DVD market in mind, making sure there were two episodes on a theme that could be packaged together with a small bit of connecting animation.

I can see a definite improvement from the previous DVDs, even the menu! To show you what I mean:

See? It just looks much more polished. And while the first season DVDs only had the bonus music video as an extra, this one also includes some character profiles and a tour of Strawberry's house.

The animation is a little better, and the songs are much zippier this time around (though the last one is kind of boring). While the vocal performances are better, that seems to be due to the main cast being older, as the overall voice direction is still a bit lacking. And the decision to connect two 22 minute stories rather than stretch a plot over 44 minutes helps a lot, too. There are still scenes that move at their own pace, but they're not as noticeable.

The first episode is Here Comes Pupcake, and on its own it's a fine story of Custard dealing with the arrival of Pupcake into her life, but it's just not canon. And the worst part is, it wouldn't be that hard to make it fit into the established canon. There's no sign of Apple Dumplin', so it would be easy to say this story takes place sometime before Meet Strawberry Shortcake, except that in this episode Strawberry already knows her core group of friends, even though according to Meet Strawberry Shortcake she didn't meet any of them until after she owned Pupcake. So all you'd have to do is take out the scenes of her friends to make it work (and eliminate Strawberry's narration that claims this all happened just two weeks ago). But as the episode stands, it's non-canon.

The second episode introduces our first new character of the season: Peppermint Fizz, the first kid character to explicitly be an antagonist in any SSC universe (if you don't count Raisin Cane from the comics). As an antagonist, she does a decent job, but honestly, this story could have played out perfectly fine without her machinations, since the lesson isn't "don't cheat" (that's a future episode) but "all pets are the best because they're our friends." Any of the kids could have suggested having a pet show, and they still could have argued at the end over who did better in the show, only for the pets to show them they like having fun best, as they did in the episode.

Just like Pets on Parade before it, this is the first animated appearance of everyone else's pets, though I'm fairly certain all the pets of the core kids were mentioned on the website as soon as it was put up. Also like Pets on Parade, it includes a reptile lipsynching to a previously recorded track to throw a pet show. (And both Pets on Parade and the previous episode rhyme Custard with mustard in a song.)

The new format includes two songs per episode, regardless of whether it needs them or not, and in the case of this ep, I think one would be just fine. "The Best Pet Yet" is a jaunty tune that acts as a preparation montage for the pet show, but "You're My Berry Best Friend" closes out the episode, so not only is the story basically over, the song itself is seriously slow. Meanwhile, neither of Here Comes Pupcake's songs are strictly speaking necessary, they are at least both fun, with Strawberry singing an incredibly catchy ode to her cat and Custard getting to vent her frustrations against Pupcake in song form.

One last note: I found the "as-aired" scripts for these episodes online, and while they don't include any stage directions (those sometimes offer interesting takes on what's going on onscreen), it does include notes on dialogue and sound effects, which can be interesting, too. Such as Custard's sleep noises being described as "cute kitty snores" and Ginger Snap's dialogue as "90 mph." And Peppermint Fizz's first appearance is supposed to be "like The Grinch." Just some things I found amusing.

other main character meta- Ochako, pt 1

“Could you send me there?” you ask, while i blink, confused. “The world where someone else is the main character? not because i have any hypocritical biases against the one i got, just curious how the fandom meta changes.”

“Oh, yeah, sure.” I nod, thinking, before tapping my wand against your forehead. “Let’s start with Ochako.”

"I'm going to warn you now- I will have to slightly adjust the plot like I did with Mirio, just to actually let her be the main character."

"Yeah, that checks out." You nod, thinking about certain arcs where the female fighting teams get no coverage while the dudes get four different backstory reveals and full fight focus.

"Very well."

The show begins with a brief narration by the girl of quirks and super hero fights- all flashy. Then it zooms out to show the destruction, and a small construction team moving in as Ochako explains that just as there are new careers in society for heroes, there's also a bigger market for construction companies, one of which her own family runs.

"I've always wanted to help them with it, and my quirk would be useful"- a tiny, adorable Ochako finally appears, making rocks in a park float- "but to get a work license like that is expensive and selective- you've got to make a lot of court appearances and convince them why is a good idea and won't destroy the economy. It's much easier to get a hero license."

Then she explains: "Of course, once you have a hero license, you can make a lot more money than just by helping the company. Especially if... Your family company isn't doing very well." A series of tired but loving parents are shown working all hours to make ends meet.

"I want to help them- my parents. They've done everything for me, and they deserve a break. So that's why I'm going to be a hero- their hero."

The training montage is quick, using her quirk during school in training, after school in secret, around the house. She saves up money too, and studies, aiming for a scholarship.

She applies and tests for many hero schools, and the exams all vary widely.

The first episode ends with her looking up at UA, her final one, the one she really hopes to get into.

"Oh, that's nice." You nod. "And we even get to know her parents' quirks here."

"Yep." I agree. "In general, there's a lot more of a look at the financial side. It's pretty interesting."

"And the fandom?"

"Well, certain people get praised for the bare minimum, but I'll admit having a female lead is super uncommon for shonen jump." It's an improvement, though it's up in the air how much of one it will be. "There's also, because we saw a lot more hero schools, a ton of "students at different school" fics, either because they were expelled or because of the danger UA gets into."

"I do kinda feel like this universe is lucky for that sort of world building." You nod.

"It's very cool to see the takes on the aus. But, I will say there's a cost for this world building- the AfO stuff reeeeally comes out of nowhere and tends to not be popular with fans."

The next episode starts, and Ochako helps a boy from falling. "Love interest alert!" The fans notice quickly when the cute boy blushes and doesn't manage to say much before she walks away.

"They caught on quick." You note.

"And they aren't wrong." Not that it's any real feat to be right.

The exam starts, and Ochako is off in a flash. You see a few glimpses of future classmates- Iida, Aoyama, Kirishima.

She does well, racking up villain points and rescue points, until she's a little too ambitious and falls into the rubble. Her nausea is well established by now, everyone knows she's at her limit.

She can't get up.

The green haired boy comes back and stops the zero pointer.

And breaks every bone in the process.

Ochako saves him in return, lifting up the rubble and stopping his fall.

And then vomits violently afterwards.

"You know, I think quirks suck, actually." The fandom tends to agree on this after that episode/chapter. "But it is interesting that there's such a price for the powers, balances it really well."

"Ha." You shake your head. "They caught onto that, quicker."

"Yep." I can't even say it's more highlighted here, it's the exact same way it was shown in our universe- down to the sparkling rainbow puke.

"Though..." You can't quite imagine that's the only thing the fandom is saying isn't actually that great.

"Ding ding ding." I nod. "Did our own main character get treated just like a damsel in distress? Sure, she saved him back, but that just meant she could have floated away on her own in that time, even if it made her sick. Better that than dead. Is it the sexism?" I shrug. "Most decide to wait and see a bit, and by the time they work together in the first battle exercise figure it's a pretty even split between them saving each other."

"So no sexism?" You get happy at that thought.

I cough. "Ah, no. Both in the show and the fandom. You wouldn't believe how many grown men complain about the lady mc, even as they keep watching."

"And have her body pillow."

"Please don't make me think about that." I cover my eyes, but don't deny that it's true. "Anyway, yeah. Get ready for a lot of people to point out that even though the main character is a girl, every single other girl is flat as cardboard so far and that she only has developed friends that are guys."

"Hey, they aren't flat-"

"In the first season? Yeah they are. Unless you meant, physically, in which case..."

"I didn't." You protest. "But I guess I can see your point, at the start."

"Right. Let's continue on."

Uraraka goes to Present Mic to offer her points. The man pats her on the head, and skyrockets to the position of fandom dad.

"It's all about Dadmic and then Dadzawa here," I explain. "The fans were very disappointed to learn Mic wasn't her homeroom teacher, but yeah... He got a huge head start before Dadzawa fics got going."

"Nice. And it's all fanon?"

"Yeah, it may be a good thing he's not actually in it much, or they might realize how much they just made up on their own."

Then she gets accepted in, on hero and rescue points- she's third place overall, and she gets the scholarship.

On the first day of school, she actually gets to know her love interest's name- Midoriya!

There's also the quirk assessment, which really leads to the "expelled to another school" au and the "fire Aizawa and replace him with better Mic" aus, the first of which lasts much longer in the fandom use, but the second one was just as passionate for a while.

Iida becomes the second friend, and gives her the "Infinity Girl" nickname- which actually is the fandom assumption of what her hero name will be for quite a while, a la 'ground zero'.

Then it's time for All Might's first appearance on screen, to much applause of the students, and the announcement that they get their costumes.

During the first battle exercise, there's a lot more lingering camera work in the changing rooms. Ochako gets to expand a lot more on how she didn't want her costume to be that tight. It's uncomfortable, especially when she thinks about wearing it in front of everyone.

"Oh, I forgot she didn't like it at first... Does she just, get used to it here?" It sounds horrible for the plot to just say 'get used to it' to the main character being sexualized by costume makers outside of her control, especially as a child.

"Not on my watch." I mumble, waving the wand. "Don't worry, she'll actually get more costume changes each time, like some other characters."

"Oh good."

Mineta, regrettably, still exists. You find the fandom manages to be even more violent in his removal.

The battle does even out the opinions on Midoriya, as well as lead to a boost in Iida's with his charming little attempt at thinking villainously.

And cements Bakugo as rather hated. No one has really liked him, when the first thing he did was blow up at Midoriya, then get revealed to have called him a cruel nickname all this time. And then specifically hunt him down because all he cares about it beating him up.

"Yeah he's not gonna get a lot of fans here huh."

"He sure never gets first place in the popularity poll." I agree. "Most consider him the subversion of the rival trope to show is just stupid and violent and in real life, people like that don't go anywhere."

"Most?"

I look away. "How dumb of a discourse do you think you could see today?"

"Oh please, show me." You lean in. "It's nice to not have to deal with it in my universe, so I don't care."

The discourse is such.

Bakugo is gay-coded for Midoriya, the violence is a result of him being shoved off for a girl's love interest when she should be single and independent, and the homophobic creator is vilifying all gay people by saying they are predatory to poor straight boys with refused.

"They............... What."

"If it makes you feel better, that's a very brief minority of the fandom. My favorite response to it was "he's not gay-coded, he's bully coded you sanctimonious sumph of a shmuck.""

"Oh good," you sigh. "I'm glad we don't have to deal with actual queerphobic tropes like that."

I stare at you.

"What?"

I sigh. "Nothing, put a pin in that until I bring up the predatory bi thing with Toga."

Your eyes widen, and you start to have some regrets.

"Anyway, we can talk shipping later. Time for more."

The 'exit sign Iida' gives him a boost in being shipped with Ochako, (as well as Yaoyorozu) and also the general idea that "Ochako has two hands."

That one hand can have a boyfriend with a lot of cash to spare for her and the other is also played with.

"I missed the main trio, like this." You smile as they walk off into the sunset after school.

"Yeah." I agree. "Anyway, time for some near death experiences."

The USJ marks the start of the gradual, gradual growth of Dadzawa fics. It also focuses far more on Ochako, Mina, Sero, and Iida having to think strategically to get around Kurogiri. It's only after Iida escapes that we cut back to a slightly abridged version of how Midoriya was doing, then the other kids, before help arrives.

He does still through his first non bone breaking punch though, which makes the audience happy.

All Might saves the day. Aizawa is battered afterwards. Many fans start out by saying they were disappointed, since this was supposed to be the first big fight, and the kids didn't do much. Many others say in response that's the point- we're looking at first years, they had to think and help each other, but in the end they had to rely on adults.

And then the sports festival is announced. They want to do well, because this is how they get work-week placements, which could become internship offers.

Ochako thinks about Hado Nejire, the only intern of a top ten hero, and senior at UA, along with a few others who are on the up and up. She's determined.

"Really? You're bringing in the big three early?" You ask, glancing at my wand.

It's not sparkling.

I cross my arms with a huff. "Look. Nejire is at this point the only intern in the top ten, she would have been recognizable to the students for that, even if they didn't recognize the big three (which really means that they aren't actually called the Big Three by everyone, or at least not a wide enough group for it to be as big a deal as it's treated. Anyway.) But she wasn't, even if she should have been the most famous of the bunch, considering the coverage the first years got in just their first night. That's because a certain someone doesn't actually think of his female characters much, but he has to in this universe, so."

"Ok, yeah, that's fair. So does that change the sports festival?"

"Not... Much." I admit.

“What?”

“Well, keep in mind in the first universe, our main character didn’t make it past the second round in the one-on-one’s. So she’s not exactly guaranteed a win here either.”

You have to nod, admitting that is true.

“And the conflict isn’t so much about having to live up to any predecessor or breaking down some people’s walls via breaking bones.” I tap my wand against my chin, thinking. “There really is two- one about Midoriya, and one about Ochako’s parents.”

“Oh?”

“One, there’s been the Uraraka’s not happy about how much danger Ochako’s been in. Its been hinted at in the phone calls, but really shows up when we get to see them at home before the SF for the first time since she moved for school. They aren’t sure if she can stay there herself, or if the right thing to do would be to pull her out and maybe try a smaller school.”

“I suppose that's fair, if they haven't been able to actually see her or her progress.”

“Right. The second one is- well. in this, Izuku’s win of the first round, and then breaking out of brainwashing, is more about really piling on how good his mind is- all that brain power. This adds more pressure when we see Ochako being offered a plan from him to beat Bakugo.”

“Oh that does sound neat.”

“Yep- but of course, she still refuses. It’s held up as a worse thing, strategically, initially- but then she comes up with a plan that Midoriya confirms in the stands is better than his, and proves to her parents that she’s smart and skilled enough to handle continuing at the school.”

You smile. “That is a cool arc to do, i guess, if very not traditional. But what about all the character setup and growth with Shinsou and Todoroki?”

“Oh, Shinsou’s largely gets delegated all the way later for the joint training arc, where Ochako’s team is directly against him. Todoroki...” I begin to giggle.

You wait for me to answer, getting more concerned the longer i laugh.

“Pocket?”

“Sorry, sorry, yeah. He actually tells her himself in this canon, a bit after stain. Oh! right, i forgot- the cheerleader incident.”

“Oh no.”

“Oh yes. of course they need this merch opportunity! But yes, it happens. The... shall we say, non-body-pillow portion of the fandom, generally saw it as the end of any goodwill to Kaminari, who had previously been seen as a tertiary possible love interest, since he’d flirted with her on the first day. Flirt, but harmless, and unlikely to be important. Then there was that breach of trust and international embarrassment, and anyway he’s basically the second least likely in 1a to be shipped with her now.”

“Wow. So none of that changed?”

“Well, the setup wasn’t under narration from Todoroki about how his mother was bought for her body and how much that sucked and impacted her and the family while on screen we see multiple girls tricked into barring their bodies and its treated as a laugh instead?”

You stare at me. “I’m not sure if that’s better or worse.”

“Neither am I.”

“So, the Todoroki reveal?”

“Right. So, first you need to know the Stain thing- the claims he has against ‘false’ heroes focusing on money is better spotlighted. After Stain’s arrest, Ochako hears a couple of sidekicks at Gunhead’s agency-”

“Wait!” you interrupt. “She still interned with Gunhead? Then what was the point of showing Nejire and Ryukyuu earlier?”

I try not to massage my forehead. “To build up to it. She only made it to the first of the final round, she couldn’t get an internship with a top tenner yet. She’s also got to learn how to disarm someone who fights with a knife. These things build up over more time, small steps.”

“Ah.” You’re satisfied, and let me continue.

“Right, so, Overhears a couple of them talking about Stain’s philosophy and ends up just feeling really bad about it for a bit, trying to figure out if she’s actually being selfish or a bad hero for, you know, wanting her family to not be crushed due to capitalism.”

“Poor girl.” You shake your head in sympathy, the freeze. “Oh. did not intend that pun.”

“It’s alright, i know what you mean. And yeah, she bottles it up for a bit, until the second day back at school. Then Iida reminds her that him bottling things up last week got several kids in mortal danger, and she begrudgingly admits that he has a point and tells them about what has been bugging her.”

“And they comfort her?”

“Well, Todoroki also offers to tell off Kaminari because at this point his mention of stain upset both her and iida, but yes, A lot of reassurances.”

You squint. “I feel like shippers.”

“You’re learning! Yes, Todoroki is just a bit behind Iida in terms of popularity shipping with her. and she does basically get shipped A Lot with each girl in her class too, like imagine double to triple the amount with each girl now, and for the minor guys- but yeah. There’s a lottttt of ships. This was basically called ‘todoroki’s introduction into ochako’s harem’ in the fandom.”

Shipping. fandom just can’t escape it.

“So, then she learns about Todoroki’s past? oh, and what about Hosu? Does she- and everyone else- actually think Endeavor saved the three??”

I snort. “Oh, no. Todoroki’s flat ‘yeah my father totally helped us, as you read on the official report’ basically tipped the fandom off that something else had. But nothing confirmed either, you know? Filling in the hosu gap is another trope in fics that is pretty common.”

“Neat.”

“Yep. But yeah Todoroki tells her his backstory a bit after his introduction into her ‘harem’ of friends. It’s really played up more to caution Ochako- its alright for her to want to help her family, and to work for money to do that. But Rei accepted the marriage offer for money for her family too, and it ended up breaking her. Ochako has to accept a balance- she can work to help her family, and its good, but there are some things she cannot morally do to help them, and other things that she shouldn’t do because she has to take care of her own health first.”

“Ohhhh.” You hadn’t quite expected that, but you sorta liked it, now that you thought about it.

I smile. “It is pretty neat, yeah.” I glance at my watch. “Look, i hate to cut you off, but this post is gonna end up thrice the length of Mirio’s and i think tumblr might stop me, so we’re gonna have to do a two-parter.”

“That’s fine.” You are gracious for what you’ve gotten so far, and do have questions that you’re excited to see answered for the rest of the series. “It’s been fun.”

“It has been.” I agree. “Lets take a break, but you can ask me any questions too, before I return for part two.”

A Visual Reference guide to my thoughts through Wing it Like Witches

This is a visual guide of my reactions to Wing it Like Witches, written with notes I took during the episode that were typically stream of consciousness.

Okay, so we have another episode this week! Well, I wonder what they’re going to do. I mean some ships have been one-episode affairs and... Molly Ostertag helped write this one.

“I used to be like you; obsessed with status, challenging my competition, but I grew up. When will you?”

“She got away with murder? I can’t say I approve but I’m glad she’s trying new things!” Hey, up yours Back-to-the-Future-teacher! Unfortunately, this is actually being played in a realistic way. This is a problem some schools have, it’s not a movie cliche. I’ve heard reddit stories like this, with the popular kids, especially the sports kids, getting support and are allowed to get away with everything.

[GASP] WELL DEAR VIEWERS, THIS IS WHY WE’RE ALL HERE!

“YES I CAN HELP!...With what exactly?” oh my god that’s adorable.

This episode wasn’t as extreme of a Lumity overload as the last, but prom episodes are usually stuffed with that sort of thing. This episode was great nevertheless.

MLB ideas/hopes/predictions/prompts

Bunnix using her umbrella to fly like Mary Poppins

Ladybug coming up with an overly convoluted Rube Goldberg machine type plan with her lucky charm, but not having some of the components, so she just sends Pegasus to the store in the middle of a battle

Characters who are close slowly finding out about each other’s superhero identities in funny ways

Pigella picking up something massive and like 10x heavier than her and chucking it

I really want one of these heroes’ tools to be a comically large anime-style weapon, but alas I don’t think they’d do it

Season finale boss fight featuring all the new heroes, which is totally gonna happen at some point, but it would look really busy on screen to have them all running around at once, so I’d split them into smaller teams based on their skills to carry out specific parts of Ladybug’s Epic 36-Step Plan™️. It would make for a satisfying “oh yeah, it’s all coming together” montage and also give us some unique character interactions.

I want an animal to get akumatized. Someone’s dog who feels lonely when their favorite human gets a new, demanding job and turns into a terrifying Cerberus beast or something.

Mayor Bourgeois allocates some taxpayer dollars into a LB bank account to support her, and she has to make the very important decision on whether to save it for a real emergency or buy 17 hamburgers.

Okay part of me doesn’t want to make kwami/future hero predictions in case I accidentally come up with something way cooler than what will really happen and then be disappointed, but the other part of me is like hee hoo predikshun. So don’t expect these to actually happen lol.

I won’t talk about Multimouse because we kinda know everything about her, but she looks cute and it’s nice to see two heroes who aren’t super skinny.

The silhouette of Minotaurox in the intro doesn’t offer a lot of insight other than his epic horns. I have no idea what his tool might be. His costume looks to be pretty simple/practical, though, which is in line with Ivan’s character. I heard a theory that his power will be increasing in size, and it makes sense looking at Stoneheart and the pattern of flipping the characters’ flaws on their head, but that sounds kind of boring to me, especially compared to all the other creative abilities.

Tigresse’s silhouette makes me think her design will be awesome. Her tail looks like it might be her tool. It kind of resembles Amethyst’s whip from SU so maybe she can use it to grab things like Ladybug does with her yo-yo. I heard a theory that her power will be invisibility which I support because it takes the flaw that turned Juleka into Reflekta (wanting to be invisible out of insecurity) and makes it powerful like the stealth of a tiger.

From the silhouette, Caprikid looks a bit like a beginner’s Trollhunters cosplay, but I’m sure he’ll be cool. I’ve seen people argue whether he’s Nate or Marc and I’m positive he’s Marc (making Nate CC) so if anyone asks for an explanation I’ll make the comprehensive post on why. He’s holding his tool, and I’ve seen debate over which direction it’s in. If he’s holding it pointed up it looks like a giant calligraphy brush, but I think he’s holding it pointed down and the “brush” is just a decoration on the end. I’ve heard a theory that it’s a shepherd’s cane which is my favorite one. Personal idea here: I’d make his power telekinesis. Pretty basic, but I can imagine it being very useful for the type of scenarios we see in the show without it being OP. I like the idea of using a cane to “shepherd” something through the air. This could reflect Reverser’s desire for control, but flip it to be more collected and useful.

I fully support Coq Courage’s ninja pants, they are simply Correct. It’d be cool if his tool was a bow and arrow, and that seems like a pretty popular theory. The shape to the left of his torso looks like it might be a quiver but it’s probably just his other arm. Thumb rings are used in archery, but what little we’ve seen of the miraculous (disguised on Marinette and Chloe) shows a different type of ring. Still tho. Also get ready for my crazy never-gonna-happen idea: the bow can turn into a hang glider. Roosters can fly, but not super well/freely, which could translate to gliding. It’d add some versatility to the way the heroes move around since a lot of the temporary ones can only run, and it would let him reach places LB might not be able to. I’ve heard a theory that his power will be supersonic voice which could contrast how Nathaniel is bad at communicating and quiet until he gets mad and blows up.

Orikko might be the kwami of illumination. Roosters are associated with the sun and Evillustrator’s power was sourced from light. At first I thought his transformation words might be “sunrise” and “sunset” but someone said the activation code could be “rise and shine” which sounds awesome.

Traquemoiselle, believe it or not, is actually in the intro, she’s just hidden at the very top and only a snippet of the head is showing. All we know is that she has round dog ears. Barrk is surprisingly one of the more fleshed-out kwamis as of now, having a few solid lines of characterization in Furious Fu. Kwamis are usually yin-yang to their holder, so Barrk fits Sabrina perfectly, being loyal yet independent while Sabrina is loyal and an absolute doormat. No clue about her tool. Her power is kinda in the name: tracking. Maybe she can track down some one specific thing of her choice, but maybe she can sniff out akumas. As seen in Dark Owl and Gang of Secrets, Hawkmoth can be creative with akuma placement, so she can probably save the team from some close calls.

I have no theories for the transformation words of the other kwamis. Ziggy or Stompp could include “horns” or “charge” and Roaar “stripes” but I can’t think of any phrase including those words that isn’t too similar to an existing one. There are some phrases based on powers, though, not the animal. Or maybe they’ll just give up and give us another iteration of “Sass, scales slither”.

I think the theme for one of these remaining new heroes might be “assertion”. A lot of them struggle with that as their civilian selves, and the animals that are left can all be associated with independence/dominance, not that the animal traits always play into what the heroes are.

Ok last one, long one: in season 3, Luka’s main traits were “cool and nice” which doesn’t make for an interesting, complex major character, and at first he seemed like the perfect love interest, but from an outside perspective the extent of his kindness is kind of disturbing. I’m hoping they can flip this around and turn it into a character flaw where he has practically no boundaries, and it turns into a problem. Maybe he could agree to run random errands for the background characters for nothing in return, and at first it’s just him being nice, but later people start seeing his help as an obligation. They get peeved when he’s unavailable one day and get akumatized into a “boss rush” of classic akumas, effectively trapping and forcing him to help them. Then Tigresse Pourpe comes and helps save the day, expanding on Juleka and Luka’s relationship. The resolution can teach kids that putting yourself first isn’t necessarily selfish, and that sitting back and letting people take advantage of your kindness isn’t heroic.

There’s probably some stuff I forgot which I can put in a different post later, but lmk if you want a separate post about any of these things in more detail! This was just me rambling out all my new hyperfixation thoughts. Also if anyone uses any of the hypotheticals/scenarios as a prompt I’d love to see it.

Episode idea featuring Millie’s family

From getting more info about the world of Helluva Boss/Hazbin Hotel to dabbling into Blitzo’s former career at the circus, the writers weren’t lying when they said episode 2 would have a lot of fan service, but out of everything in the episode my favorite thing has to be that we learned a bit about Millie’s family, like how that she has siblings !

I hope that we will get an episode centered around Millie’s family in the near future as not only would it make for an interesting episode that could just have Moxxie and Millie as the main characters, but it would also be a great way to give the two a lot of development while also introducing several new characters. Until then here is a (long) idea for a possible plot for such an episode. This will contain mature content so watch out.

Moxxie and Millie are at there apartment talking about there plans for the week as Blitzo has given everyone time off from work while he attends to some “business”, which really is just him attending a MLP like convention on Earth in disguised. Moxxie is really looking forward to using these days off to get some uninterrupted alone time with Millie however things change when Millie gets a call from her parents saying that her grandma was in an accident and there calling all there kids to come home and see her in case something happens, so the two happily go.

Once they arrive at Millie’s parent’s house, several things are quickly revealed about Millie and her family.

· Millie’s parents run a small farm in a small country town.

· No matter how many siblings Millie has, she is the oldest and the only one that has gotten married.

· Millie is a great fighter because her siblings like to rough house with each other, which still happens to this day. This could lead to a funny gag for the episode where Moxxie keeps getting his ass kicked by his siblings in law.

· Millie’s parents love Moxxie as a son in law, if not like an actual son, but they can have negative feelings for him once in awhile. I can also see them having traits that can annoy Moxxie such as Millie’s father always ask to borrow some money while Millie’s mother make it scarily obvious that she doesn’t want to be a grandmother yet, even doing things like popping out of nowhere with snacks to prevent them from spending to much time alone together.

After saying hi to everyone (which could tell us a bit about each sibling) everyone goes see the grandma who the parents just got news saying that she will be just fine.

Everyone stays for dinner where we could learn a bit more about some of the family members like I could see the youngest sibling having a running gag where he just stares emotionlessly at everyone and maybe randomly throws mud at Moxxie, the grandma is every grumpy grandma ever who hates Moxxie for being “city folk” but tolerates him as she wants to be a great grandma, and learn a bit on one of Millie’s sisters but Ill get to her later. During dinner Millie’s grandma thanks everyone for coming and after the accident made her think of her “mortality” she ask if her grandkids could stay on the farm for a few more days to enjoy there company a bit longer. The siblings say yes (whether willingly or by force) including Millie which surprises Moxxie as he questions about there plans but Millie say they can do them another day, plus it would be fun to hang out with the family since they don’t see them as much and, after seeing the happy look on her face, Moxxie happily agrees.

The father is ok with this but says that everyone won’t just sit around doing nothing and must help him with some of the farm work just like they did years ago, same goes for Moxxie which surprises him a bit. The scene then cuts to Millie and Moxxie in Millie’s old room getting ready for bed where after a scene of Moxxie discovering something funny about a young Millie, he talks about how he’s a bit nervous of helping out around the farm since he knows nothing about farm work but Millie says he will be fine. She then seductively invites Moxxie to bed with a cheesy line like how she’s never had company in her bed before, making Moxxie smile deviously but when Moxxie gets in the bed, the door to Millie’s rooms is violently torn off and we see Millie’s mom who innocently explains that the door just “fell off its hinges” and it will probably take a few days to fix it, then she wishes them a good night leaving the two imps confused on what the hell just happened.

The next day Moxxie tries his best to help around the farm but always seems to have trouble doing his task whether it be using a tractor that seems to be malfunctioning on him to taking care of the animals which seems to hate him, except for a strangely miniature moose. After working, Moxxie tries to relax but besides there not being anything really fun to do on the farm or in town, Moxxie has to deal with the nonsense of the family members especially from Millie’s sister Mollie, who is the antagonist of sorts for the episode. I know there’s already a character named Molly in the series but I’m sticking with it. Mollie is the second oldest sibling and has always liked to annoy and make Millie mad as payback for how Millie unintentionally made everyone she has ever liked developed feelings for her when they were younger, and ever since Millie married Moxxie (who she does think is cute) she has made it a goal to flirt and seduce him (which has been happening a lot in the episode) much to Moxxie’s dismay and Millie’s annoyance.

This goes on for a few days till we see Moxxie and Millie getting some stuff at a store. Moxxie tells Millie that he doesn’t think he can take much more of this, which Millie kinda agrees with as though she loves her family and the farm she was glad to fulfill her dream of moving to the city. Moxxie wonders what he could do to stop his in laws from bothering him as much, so Millie suggest that he should try doing things he is good at to make them like him and after shooting a guy trying to steal there stuff, Moxxie and Millie get the same idea. We then get a montage of Moxxie using his skills that easily impress everyone over the past few days from shooting pest eating the crops, making amazing meals for everyone, and playing music for everyone to enjoy and it seems to put him in a better mood in the process. Sadly this doesn’t last long as after dinner on everyone’s last night at the house he is forced to play a violent sport with the family. Moxxie tries his best but besides getting really hurt he loses the game for his team, which causes Millie’s family to either laugh at him or complain that he made them lose. This causes Moxxie to have a bit of a mini freakout and states he to going for a walk. Millie tries to calm him down but Moxxie says he needs some time away from these assholes which hurts Millie’s feeling since he is not only insulting her family but he’s insulting THERE family and she madly walks away. Moxxie tries to say something to her but hesitates and goes.

During his walk Moxxie sings a song about the craziness yet wonderment of family, which could hint or confirm a few things about Moxxie’s own family like how along with being an only child, he also lost his parents at a young age. When Moxxie gets back to the house he sees that a light is on in the old barn (which he was told earlier in the episode should never happen) and goes to check it out and after a fake jump scare from a scarecrow, he is shocked to see Mollie in a sexy revealing outfit. She feels bad that the family has made Moxxie very stress so she decides to help him “relive” some tension. Moxxie tries to get away, but in a disturbing scene Mollie easily overpowers him and is able to take off Moxxie’s pants but luckily before she can do anything else, Millie arrives and after Moxxie and Millie quickly apologize Millie and Mollie start fighting but this causes the already old town barn to collapse around them. The rest of the family runs out to see what happened, where they not only see the barn destroyed but also Moxxie, Millie, and Mollie in a suggestive position. This causes them to either laugh at seeing Moxxie in his underwear, get mad/sad at destruction of the barn, and/or wonder if Moxxie is cheating on Millie with Mollie or if he was trying to have sex with both of them. Everyone eventually starts yelling at Moxxie who is getting upset at this, but Millie gets them to shut up and explains that the barn falling down was an accident and that Mollie was trying to sleep with her husband. She is not done though as she then goes on a rant about how after all there time this week and everything Moxxie has done for them they still treat him like shit which deeply upsets her as though he may not be a farmer or anything like them, he is still a part of the family and he is very important to her. This gets everyone to think about how they have been treating Moxxie and apologize to him who then apologizes back for his outburst earlier which leads to a happy family moment. That is until the remains of the barn catche on fire and everyone panics trying to put it out.

The episode cuts to next morning where everyone is saying goodbye to each other where we get some moments of Millie’s family with Moxxie like the sibling who kept throwing mud at Moxxie instead throws mud at himself and hugs Moxxie with a small smile on his face, Millie’s father gives him some money but not before taking a few bucks back, and Millie’s mom gives him condoms which the grandma whispers to him that she put holes in them. However the most interesting goodbye is from Mollie who just offers Moxxie a simple handshake as an apology which Moxxie is nervous of taking at first but eventually does and things seem nice till Mollie says that next time she will try and make there next encounter more romantic which startles him enough to make him and Millie leave right then.

While driving Millie says that the week was interesting and they will still have some time for themselves before they have to go into work tomorrow, and since Moxxie had to deal with a lot this week she wants to give Moxxie a special “treat” when they get home which gives Moxxie a well need smile. However the episode ends on the farm where Blitzo comes out of a portal with parts of his costume ripped off and covered in blood. He is confused on why he’s here and ask Mollie if he has seen his employees anywhere only to his disappointment learn that they just left. Mollie then seductively ask if he could use some help getting cleaned off and after glancing at her, Blitzo shrugs and says ok but apologizes if he calls out Moxxie’s and Millie’s name which just makes Mollie groan in annoyance a bit.

This is just one possible idea for an episode like this. I have this other idea for an antagonist that could also lead to a more violent climax, which I might post one day in the future if anyone is interested.

Animaniacs Reboot Review Summary

I can’t really speak for Pinky and The Brain since I never watched them, but I’ll still give my take.

Also, it was stated that season 1 had “ups and downs” while season 2 was...perfect? Not sure if perfect was the right word but is exceedingly better. And PaTB shorts were good while not all Warner shorts were.

(I will say that I liked every odd number episode but every even number either had one good segment or none. So I guess that’s my take on the “ups and downs.”)

I would like to say that when you watch something, you gotta have neutral expectations. If you’re positive, you’ll see positives and if you’re negative you’ll see negatives. Rarely does it change. It’s not fair to judge something based on an improper mood.

I guess I have the advantage of not growing up with it. So no nostalgia for me.

Aesthetic

Visually speaking, it was really well done! Cell animation lasted until 2000 so they had to animate it digitally. But the Warners look fantastic! The yellow tint in their faces could be from their prototypes. Nice callback. Pinky and The Brain look the same. The humans though...off. But the animation was fluid and nice. It’a a little slower than the OG and stiff in some places but overall great. All the studios made them all consistent which is a plus from the original (Starbox and Cindy excluded).

Music

They did have a full orchestra. I don’t know if covid hindered its use or not. But it was still enjoyable. I think there were stock sound effects instead of musical ones. Nothing wrong with them but the musical sfx were unique.

Songs

I like “Catch Up,” “Reboot It,” and “To Be Like Us.” (Not sure the correct name.) But most of the others didn’t need to be there. Like the montage moments.

Humor

I did laugh. I was caught off guard a few times. They did add adult jokes in there. When it works, it works. But not completely.

Story

The themes chosen for the skits were fine. The execution for some were...to be desired. Especially the PaTB ones. When they ended, sometimes it didn’t feel like it did; it felt like the sequence stopped and Brain decided to leave.

Also it was more gross. They didn’t have to have so many butts especially on Pinky and Scratchy. Like what? And Wakko’s tail!!!

Characters

I don’t think I’ve seen Yakko be himself - gabby and annoyingly slick. He was like a third wheel at times. He actually took Wakko’s role a bit like eating stuff and being funny visually. He’s also bad at math and can’t swim apparently - something the OG showcased differently. I did like how they gave him a weakness - needs to talk and not be alone. It’s nice to see a different side to him. I do kind of like them showing him more as a parental figure. Key word figure. Maybe some more?

Wakko’s has Dot’s role - the cute one. Literally I’ve got screenshots of them being adorable and he’s the cutest. But overall, I guess between the three of them, he was the most in-character. He’s still an eating machine, although he doesn’t eat everything in sight while he’s not the focus.

Dot is center stage. She has Yakko’s role. And Yakko & Wakko are like her Wakko & Dot. She has wit and not cuteness. To be fair, I wanted her to be bumped up a notch or two. But not 11. And I never liked the “cute” factor because it made her kind of one-dimensional since that was all she talked about. But I’m trying to remember her having “wit” in the show. She was more of a spokesperson. She’s borderline bad side of feminism though. It has to be toned down more. Still there but subtle. What they can do is show men and women doing things equally so that she doesn’t have to mention it. Or just have had her mention it once and not all the time. I love her speaking out more than just staying in the background like she did in OG but she needs to be on the same wavelength as her brothers.

They can switch roles. Like they had Dot be the doctor and Yakko and Wakko as nurses. Show don’t tell. It needs to be progressive but not in your face.

It would’ve been best if all three had the same amount of screen time.

All three act like siblings but a little different. They attack each other more - not malicious. In OG, they just yelled at each other. In this one, they have been more physical. That would be fine but that’s not how they are. They show affection in a subtle fashion - which the reboot did. But never physical violence with each other.

From what I’ve seen, Pinky is generally the same. Good. Brain though...got angrier. He’s more harsh and a little evil. That FLOTUS episode didn’t put him in a good light. They are more...close from what I’ve heard. I think it’s sweet that Brain cares for Pinky (Future Brain) than that of him detesting him for ruining plans.

The voice talent was phenomenal. Regardless if they sound the same after 25 years, everybody still gave a fantastic delivery. Kinda wished they pitched Yakko, Wakko, and Dot’s voices like they did in OG, though. That was done to make them more zany.

I might review individual episodes.

I would give it 7/10

They have the spirit but not the magic that it originally had. The Warners aren’t really zany. They’re toned down. They need to focus more on their personalities and not living in the culture of 2020.

Episode 13! I don’t have all that much to say about it. But there were three things in particular I really liked!

Sorato moments! It may be small (I mean, they’re kids and they’ve known each other for like a day), but no one will be able to say Sora and Yamato didn’t have any development in this season!

Sora Getting Shit Done! She’s as cool as Yamato. Scratch that, she’s cooler than Yamato. She’s honest and compassionate. She’s brave like Taichi, values her friends as much as Yamato, AND she can get along with both of them. Bahahaha.

SO MANY adorable Jou&Gomamon moments this episode. Like seriously. SO MANY.

So our two groups are still separated! Jumping ahead, but next week we’ll see MegaKabuterimon, and that rounds out two episodes for each group. But that still leaves Zudomon’s appearance. Just a hunch, but my guess is we’ll see him the episode after which will be the reunion episode too. If not, I suppose the groups are gonna stay separated longer, but this is my guess.

So, once again, our kids have been in this world for Not Very Long At All. It doesn’t seem like they’ve had to stop and sleep so far, though they’ve eaten a bit. Probably it’s still the same day in digital world time o.o It’s completely plausible that they’ve been sleeping and we’re just not being told about it though. This is a kids show, next week Koushirou could be like “we’ve been walking for a week!” and we’ll just have to roll with it lol. But until that happens, I’m going with it’s been about a day and almost everyone’s easily got two evolutions under their belt. Evolving is much easier in this season - Taichi and Yamato even got a Jogress already - so it’s definitely past time to throw out old concepts of how evolving work. The kids clearly have Crests, but they don’t know what they are, which means that’s a thing we’ll be seeing in the future. In spite of that, they can evolve to higher levels. So, maybe something else is in store for them when the Crests become important. Very interesting.

We are back with the trio who’s got their shit slightly more together. Except for Jou’s stomach. Was really amused by Yamato using binoculars. I assume Sora brought them. I’m so used to Taichi’s telescope, but it only makes sense that each group should have some working gear!

Also par for the course, Yamato looking at what’s ahead while Jou’s being sick and Sora’s in between helping them both :P

They find this thing. The hive of brainwashed mecha soldier bees. The person who wrote this episode has definitely had a bad run in with suzumebachi.

As they try to escape, Jou immediately falls off Birdramon.

Me: “Oh no! Someone go help him!”

Gomamon:

Me: “NO NOT YOU”

Like I know they’re partners... but Gomamon doesn’t even have hands. xD All he can do (and all he does do!) is fall together. They’re partners so it’s not surprising, but still... Wheeeeeee!

Honestly though it is just so adorable to me how useless Jou is and how hard Gomamon tries for him... even though Gomamon has a lot more excuse for being useless. I mean, he’s made for a water habitat.

Gabumon: “Jou’s with Gomamon, so he should be okay...”

I guess it works on Sora though, she’s as concerned for this cutie pie as she is for Jou... maybe more.

We make a quick switch to group number 2 who are finally living up to my expectations for how nuts they are. Koushirou’s connection is turbulent, to use the lingo Tumblr always pisses me off with!

Mimi offers to help. “My grandpa can get you a better one!” She... she tries.

Taichi offers to help too. “Times like this you just gotta whack it!” Koushirou looks appropriately terrorized.

I’m so relieved to know Taichi and Mimi are both still batshit.

Yamato and Sora hatch a plan to save Jou by getting themselves captured too. Honestly the show doesn’t spend enough time on the cool stuff like hatching this plan! It just happens! It def got me thinking how brave and cooperative Sora is. Like, we already know Yamato is cool, and he has more experience in the digital world than the others. But Sora just rolls with it. It turns out that Yamato’s shitty plan wasn’t so shitty after all, because either he and Sora talked about what they’d have to do if the couldn’t stay inside the hive, or Sora is psychic. Or just that good at cleaning up after hot-headed men. Anyway yeah Birdramon to the rescue.

For a hot second there it looked like Yamato was going to be like “We don’t have time to save those Digimon” again. Which, I thought we worked through last time, so I was confused. BUT it turns out he only wanted Sora to know he’s got her number. He’s figured out she’s not the type who can turn her back when someone needs help, even if she’s got her own priorities to think about. Sora’s selfless. Yamato clues into that. AND HE TOTALLY SUPPORTS HER <3

Now as much as this is supposedly a Sora episode... she’s had some cool moments but it doesn’t feel like Her Episode as much as last week felt like Mimi’s ep, or the weeks before felt like they belonged to Taichi and Yamato. So actually, that makes it strike number two for Sora, although this episode is definitely better than episode four. It’s not fair. I’m just glad we got some new stuff for her this time, but the writers seem so determined to make her the “good girl” that they forgot character development needs to involve some stakes. So, in place of that, they just do another montage.

First Sora reflects on how useless Jou is.

Then she reflects on how hot Yamato looks when he’s totally helpless.

Then she thinks about how the two of them remind her of pitiful baby bees.

The result... Garudamon!!! Always my favorite Ultimate evolution.

We then set up the intro for next week’s episode, with Koushirou’s computer starting to work again, though not completely. I want it to not work at ALL so Koushirou can be like “i’m no longer useful to my friends, woe is me!” and his friends can be all “Koushirou you’re my best pal no matter what!” and then he saves the day using his noggin. If it was good enough for Mimi’s grandpa it’s good enough for you.

I’m also amused to learn that in spite of apparently selling computers, Mimi’s grandpa too is an advocate of hitting them to make them work.

Agumon mimicking every adorable thing Taichi does is adorableness overload.

Taichi once again offers to smack the computer, like the Taichi of my childhood. However, he claims he’s joking. He’s a 21st century kid after all.

Agumon tells him hitting the computer will hurt his hand, so he should let Agumon do it instead T___T omg that’s the cutest thing EVER I’d give this episode ten stars for this moment alone

but ignoring adorable Taichi/Agumon and Jou/Gomamon moments, I’ll give this episode a 6.5/10. It was almost there! It really needed more Sora though! You know, the spotlight character of the week??

I just don’t feel her as convincingly as the others... which is in part intentional, I think, because that’s Sora. She doesn’t talk about her own feelings so much, she’s private, but she cares very deeply about those around her. I absolutely am with that, but I think that’s really challenging to write, and it wouldn’t bother me so much if we were getting more development in small ways for all the kids all the time. Instead the primary way is these spotlight episodes. We had them in 99 Adventure too, but there was more dialogue between the kids. Watching this episode, I had a thought like “This reminds me of a formulaic Pokemon episode.” As in, there’s someone to rescue, we rescue them, it has little to no consequence for us on a personal level and next week we won’t even mention it happened. At least this episode, they did mention Neemon’s group, to show how this is a pattern for Sora. I’m gonna cross my fingers that means Sora’s going to come out big in the future, we just gotta believe in her and wait. That being said, I’m not trying to be negative, I am also happy that we got these bits for her at all, and especially that we got it confirmed that Yamato sees through her as much as she sees through him!

Head empty, pre-TPN season 2 thoughts only.

Normally I don’t even bother with hiding spoilers but since the new season is so close I’ll put everything below a cut (if tumblr cooperates) because I do want anime-onlys to enjoy the season with as little knowledge to what madness is about to happen as possible. This is just a bunch of notes that filled my head over the past couple days.. weeks? A long time.. and if I didn’t write them all down somewhere I wouldn’t stop thinking about them.. so if you understand this whole mess, then kudos to you.

So, here’s your post-season 1/ch37+ spoiler warning.

Demon language:

With Mujika and Sonju making their grand first appearances, I hope actually implement the demon language this time?

The only word spoken in the language in season 1 was the demon god’s name, which was just changed to “Him” (sub) or “The One” (dub), so ignoring it there was fine.

Granted, our demon friends don’t say much in their language during the upcoming arc, aside from this moment in ch48, but I can see the anime passing it off as a mere whisper between the two of them just so they don’t have to worry about it.

I don’t recall any of the GP poachers using the language though.. right? Pretty sure they don’t..

Anyways, all I’m saying is that they better figure something out by the Ayshe shows up way later in future seasons.

Episode count? 24?

Short answer: I don’t think so? Did once, but stuff happened. Anyways..

Season 1 ended in March 2019, which is also when we learned we were getting a second season and once we found later on that S2 was originally going to air in October 2020, I immediately thought we were getting about 24 eps.

I thought with all that time between seasons, 24 eps would be reasonable and that S2 would end at ch101. S1 managed to adapt 37 chapters, so 64 chapters in a season twice as long sound decent enough, right?

By the time we reach ch101, it would give us the demon forest, shelter B06-32, Goldy Pond and the short trip to Cuvitidala. (all of which would make this long wait for s2 sooo worth it btw.)

By this point we learn a bunch about the outside world, Norman being alive, what happened to Phil, and the demon bastard himself.

I bring up ch101 as a stopping point because it’s the last chapter before the two year time skip and.. I honestly can’t see them doing a time skip mid-season?

I mean, they could if they wanted to, I guess? Having everyone age up suddenly between episodes via a montage, a quick summary or even flashbacks of what we missed.. but maybe at the start of a season? Not in the middle.

Right now we know anime original scenes are going to be included into season 2 so I’m kinda hoping that once we do eventually reach the time skip we learn more about the search Emma’s group went on for T7W/golden water/temples.

I counted. If S2 does indeed get this many episodes, ep23 (or 22, if there’s a break in between somewhere or whatever) will land on my birthday and you can bet I’ll be beyond happy

HOWEVER! all the hope I once had about a 24ep season vanished due to the clusterfuck that was 2020. Thanks to the worldwide pandemic, many anime were put on hold and pushed back several months, with TPN airing this month rather than the original October date.

It was a bummer hearing about the delay at first but I never complained about it. I much rather have the studios prioritize their employee’s health over production.

Even if S2 did reach ch101, or even Goldy Pond, they would need to find a ton of new voice actors, and with how the world is working now.. eh, I have some doubts.

Cloverworks also has two other series airing this month aside from TPN so needless to say they’ll be a bit busy, especially if employees are still working from home, social distancing, or however they’re managing to produce these anime.

So, episode count.. 12?

The main reason I have a hard time grasping the idea of another 12ep season at all is because.. I don’t know where it’ll be a decent place for it to stop?

S1 ending at ch37 with the kids escaping? Perfect. You can’t question that decision. But now? When a whole bunch of craziness is about happen? How do you choose another perfect moment to end a season with?

No matter how many anime original scenes they have planned for the demon forest, I believe we’ll at least reach B06-32, which will get us to ch52.

Could they go farther? Sure. Perhaps ending at ch59-60? It would leave us off with Emma & Ray leaving the comfort of the shelter to follow Yuugo into yet another demon infested forest, much like how S1 left off, as the escapees left their once safe, comfortable life into the unknown world.

Or end at ch64? After Emma gets snatched by the poachers? It could work. It would certainly leave everyone wanting more, especially us manga readers because goddamn the GP arc would be SO close!

Perhaps ch74 after seeing Norman alive? Just so it’s not a big darn secret anymore to those who are going into this season blind? (how do people manage to stay anime only? i’m not trying to make anyone feel bad.. i’m just impressed? i caught up to the manga right after s1 because i didn’t have the self control to wait!)

Ending on that chapter would be so bittersweet to me.. because you know what appears in ch75 and it’s literally one of the only things I care about.

S2 preview trailers already teased some of the demon forest scenes I’m most excited about, so the only things left that will truly excite me are Yuugo and that darn outfit. (seriously, whenever we do get to see emma in her gp outfit for the first time, someone better scream at me so i can die from happiness.)

Okay, and all the GP kids too.. especially their trio!

Could they fit the Goldy Pond arc into a 12 episode season along with every other event that came before it? I.. seriously hope not?

Compared to s1, which was very dialogue heavy, GP is about as action packed as we’re gonna get in the near future, and those scenes are going to fly by once they get put into motion.

Quick example (because it was recent and i can’t think of something else atm): the Overhaul arc from My Hero Academia. Off the top my head it was about 40 total ch? That arc took up half of the show’s S4, which was a total 25 eps.

So with the GP ending at ch96, it’ll give us about 20-30 chapters (depending on where you personally see the start of this arc I guess? once yuugo leads the duo through the forest, when emma gets snatched or when the battle actually starts)

If GP were to happen in s2 where there’s 12 episodes.. literally everything would be so fast paced and I don’t want them to rush anything or leave stuff out?

Other options?

It’s very wishful thinking and I would be getting my hopes up for nothing, because I know it won’t happen, but I could possibly see them fitting GP arc if S2 was made up of 18eps?

6 eps for the demon forest, 6 for Goldy pPond, the remaining 6 to accommodate B06-32, Cuvitidala and any other anime original scenes as they wish.

Although fitting about 64 chapters into 12-18 episodes sounds a bit much.. but not really? I seriously have no idea at this point how much story we’re going to cover this season.

Could I perhaps place all my hopes towards a second cour later this year? Like for the summer.. or would I be expecting too much?

This all could’ve been avoided if they just tell us! Seriously, I’ve been thinking about episode count since last year.. and now you have to deal with this mindless chatter of mine.

I’d honestly be okay with another 12ep season though. We waited this long that I’ll just be excited to see all the children again.

Anime-only scenes:

Those 3 days the children spent learning from our demon friends? Yes please! Did you know Emma not only learned how to use a bow and arrow but a freakin’ harpoon as well? Like.. hello?? I must see this!

Perhaps they’ll even adopt some of the extra pages from some of the chapters, like they did in S1 with the flashback of Norman being sick in ep10.

I know this will be such a high hope, but I remember in ch177 how Emma claims that after they escaped, they all remembered how kind Isabella really was, so if they decide to adapt the extras from ch41-42 & ch45, I’ll cry.

And these pages? Cloverworks, please..

I’m literally begging here..

Especially these two! Even though I still doubt we’ll reach Goldy Pond if we get 12eps.. but in the future! Please!

Other random nonsense:

I may or may not get emotional upon seeing Isabella at the very start when she goes to confront Grandma Sarah. If her hair is kept down as it was at the end of S1 then I’ll give the anime staff my sincere thanks.

We only heard 15 seconds of “Identity” and yet it has been living in my head rent free ever since that trailer dropped. I need to hear the full song sooo damn badly, y’all have no idea.

Here’s hoping they don’t cut out the inner monologues again. At this moment I don’t remember any specific ones from the demon forest I want to see but I’m sure they’re present.

I’m ready to die at every cute Chris moment they give us.. and this entire scene where the kids scold Ray.

Literally every scene with Emma & Ray. They’re my top 2 favorites from this series okay? Of course I’m going to fangirl over them. (they already showed the hug in one of the trailers and i damn near cried)

If we see him, (which i’m sure we will, but i still have tiny some doubts) I hope they give Yuugo a fantastic voice actor.

Also, his nicknames for everyone!! Literally everything about that man I’m hyped for.

Again, very doubtful we’ll get GP in a 12ep season, but whenever that arc decides to grace us with its presence, “63194” better play on full blast when ch92-93 gets animated.

Speaking of music, while I’m completely excited to hear the new OST that Obata has in store for us (thank god he’s doing this season again btw!), I hope we hear some of those unused tracks from the first season, specifically “Their Own Thoughts.”

Every time Emma mentions their future, their goals or how her family will always be together, I’ll cry. (thanks demon god and your stupid reward)

Yes I’ll be doing those reaction posts (if you follow me i’m sure you’ve seen them by now) after every new episode as I do with other series I watch.. once I survive the usual long day at work, avoiding anything TPN related so I can watch in peace and quiet when I finally get home.. damn it, im already so anxious, help.

The Casagrandes Reviews: Croaked!

Halloween Havoc rolls on as we shine a light on the other beloved holiday on October 31st, Day of the Dead! Sid and Ronnie Anne’s well meaning plan to help Sid’s sister Adelaide move on from her frog’s death ends up convincincing the small child she has power over life and death. I’m sure all big sisters do that at some point. More about the whole being dead thing under the cut.

I’ve hyped this one up in both previous Casgrandes reviews, so as you can tell i’m excited for this one. As i’ve mentioned before but will repeat for anyone new here, I absolutley love this episode and when I did a binge a month ago for labor day of this show, it was one of the standouts by a wide margin. I only held off so long because why should Halloween be the only holiday I cover during spooky season huh? I mean yes it’s in my halloween coverage’s title but there’s always room for incusivlity. Like jello or Wolverine.

As for if i’m covering this show’s paired episode, the show’s episode for halloween itself...

Yeah I have nothing against the episode ITSELF, it’s just.. eh. I mean we do get bobby as a dracula and sid as a lobster, a cute dance sequence and Stanley griping about not getting to wear his costume at work, which is valid, and then wearing said taco costume at the end... it’s just wrapped around your standard “character blows off a family engagment for something that turns out to suck” plot, the only diffrence being Bobby being the best brother ever is supportive of Ronnie Anne going to a 6th grade party and gladly helps salvage the night at the end. And it wasn’t a plot I liked to begin with, so it had that going against it. And I Know, I tend to zero in on i’ve seen it before a lot.. but that’s because .. it’s OKAY to do a tried and true plot tha’ts been done a million times as long as you can do something entertaining with it. Both She Ra and Avatar the Last Airbender are about a world tha’ts long been conquered whose long lost savior comes to turn the tide of the war.. but that’s about as much as they share in direct comparison and both are fucking fantastic for diffrent reasons entirely. But as rehashes go that episode wasn’t BAD , just eh, and i’d rather focus on things I can write more about frankly.

Speaking of which, yeah I love this episode, and like “Mexican Makeover” it comes from Lalo Alcaraz of La Cucharacha fame, a comic strip writer whose also the show’s consultant for mexican culture, and is part of why the former episode disapointed me: because this one was REALLY fucking good. So enough hype , pitter patter let’s get at er. The episode opens with Rosa setting up a day of the dead altar for her Father, with Sid and Ronnie Anne wondering what’s up, with Sid out and out wondering if Day of the Dead is mexican halloween something i’m ashamed to admit I thought of it as for years and years, because i’m as white as I am dumb, and most cartoons didn’t go much beyond “the dead come back for a day” and get into the more metaphorhical aspects we get to here. I assume Coco is the exception, as is the book of life I just still need to watch both. And yes you may boo me over this, I certainly deserve this. I do however like this line as it’s a common misconception, and gives a lot of kids likely thinking the same about the holiday in the audience a surrogate.

Ronnie Anne also wonders what the altar’s for. Rosa, while minorly annoyed at the two is happy to edcuate explaning it’s a day for honoring your loved ones and inviting them back, metaphorically though the metaphor was lost on young me since both Mucha Lucha and El Tigre had the dead literally come back, via an altar with offerings of their favorite things. It’s a nice bit that not only explains the holiday for those in the audience who either forgot a lot of that (raises hand) or didn’t know any of that, and also helps explain how the holiday is metaphoircal, something I didn’t think about before because as we’ve established i’m kinda dumb. The point is I like it. Sid however gets an idea: Her sister Adelaide has been down in the dumps since her Frog, Froggy died, likely named after Big the Cat’s frog but this Froggy’s penchant for running off probably just got him ran over since Adelaide lives in the city and Frogger is sadly inaccurate, as George Costanza leanred the hard way.

So our ambigiously gay duo visit Addy, who being a 6 year old who just lost her pet is bawling her eyes out. So our duo tells her about day of the dead and they set out to get froggy’s faviorite things: From shoelaces to the hoppit, a frog themed version of the hobbit I both wish is real and belives is probably better than the second two hobbit movies, flies (with help from a dirty diaper because this show and it’s sister can’t resist poop jokes.. go with your audience I guess), and a lilypad. The result is this.

I”m.. not going to ask why a 6 year old’s frog has the frog equilvent of a naked burt renoylds on a bearskin rug photo, froggy’s sexy secrets died with him. But unfortuntely nuance is lost on a 6 year old, so Addy assumed Froggy was actually coming back and just grieves harder now. So Sid comes up with Plan B B: bring froggy back from the dead at the old pet semetary. Though since they don’t want to defile his body they try a dead ally cat first instead.

One Zombie Test Cat later, they decide sometimes dead is better and just go with plan b: Sid once had a goldfish that died and her parents got her a replacement, and since it worked on her, and apparently still works on Bobby, they decide to pull that. They rent a frog from the pet store. And if your asking “wait pet stores , even fictional ones, do that” and suprisingly.. no they do not, but Pete, the guy at the pet shop which is also named after him, likes Sid’s mom’s tour. Okay two questions: one is that little pete from the adventures of pete and pete all grown up? I mean I know what happend to his actor...

But in universe we have no idea. And Brendon Small, the character and the actor, showed up on Clarence so it’s plausable. And secondly where can I get the job as owner of my own pet store near melissa joan hart doing a gator show. I may have a career goal now.

So they sneak in subsittue froggy, and we get an adorable montage of Addy hanging out with Froggy the Second: Getting some son, eating flies (though Addy spits her’s out. She’s not Lana.), and watching the Hoppit.. as I wish to one day. I mean we see a trippy bit of it but not the actual thing.. I guess I can add seeing a full version to my small list of things related to this franchise that I only I want along with my a diffrent world-esque spinoff show following Lori and Bobby.

Addy happily sleeps after that giant ball of adorable, and Sid and Ronnie Anne take Froggy 2 back to Creepy Guy at the Pet Store.. I mean Pete.. I mean Future Me. So Sid pats herself on the back metaphoircally for the plan.. which this being a sitcom, naturally has kinda snowballed. Now Addy thinks she has power over life and death. Guess she has the same Christmas LIst as Crow

As not to break a small child’s heart for the second time in two days, our heroines decide they have to bring back her wish list: Great Aunt Milly, Old Mr Woodburn, and Abraham Lincoln.

Since they don’t have a time traveling phone booth, they’ll have to go with the next best thing, my boy Tio Carlos. Seriously why they don’t use this adorable nerd more is beyond me. But Carols being an adorable history nerd gladly agrees to play LIncoln for what he thinks is a play.. I mean greanted they could just tell him the truth. He’s a dad, he gets this kinda thing. Meanwhile our girls dress up like said aunt milly and shenanigans insue. It’s a really funny scene.. until it falls apart with the mr. woodburn impersination, revealing it was all a hoax, and sending Addleaide crying to her room understandably not wanting to talk to either of them. Still we got Carolos as lincoln. That’s not nothing.

But yeah having made things worse by accident, the girls go to Rosa for help who while understandably annoyed at the mess they made, is more than willing to come with and help. Because Rosa is fucking amazing ,that’s why. She sucessfully coaxes Addy out and then takes her down to the Casagrande’s place to show off her altar and explain the true meaning of day of the dead: Thinking about your loved ones.. keeps the memories alive. Thinking about who they were, what they loved, what they meant to you.. it’s not raising the dead.. but honring them. It not only made the real value of the holiday sink in for me but i’ts a good message for kids, and a good way to teach them about a holiday most probably didn’ know how it worked if they even knew at all. It’s a really sweet powerful moment, and the combination of alcaraz’s writing and Sonia Manzano really brings it to this scene. It’s easily the show’s best. Good stuff.

Froggy II interupts the scene.. turns out a trail of bacon bits, that we saw left earlier, lead him back, and Pete’s been following him the whole way and is winded because of course he is. We’re in the same blobby shape I get it man your fine. So with Addy already liking the second froggy, and having fully come to terms with the first’s death, Sid offers Pete tickets to her mom’s show in exchange for Froggy II, whose named that in this scene and who we saw in uptown funk. As long as it’s the splash zone he’s fine with it and Sid knows her mom enough well enough to know Becca would probably gladly trade a ticket for her daughter’s hapiness. Plus it’s easier to get someone to willingnly sign the wavers about getting gator blood on them when they already want that so win win. We end on a Day of the Dead party with the whole cast in day of the dead makeup, eveyrone happy.. except Carl who’se subplot of spreading marigolds everywhere I missed and he ended up at the Loud House. Why this didn’t lead to a crossover I dunno. I mean if Steve Urkel can jetpack into the family from step by step’s yard, why not? I know the 90′s were a diffrent time but this was a missed opportunity. Funny gag anyway. And scene.

Final Thoughts: I was pretty transparent with this one: I think it’s a wonderful, heartfelt, and well done look at day of the dead tha’ts educational without cramming the education part down your throat, like any good cartoon that teachs you something should do, and it’s also really funny and endearing.Not much else to say, it’s just really good and I was glad to highlight it and if you haven’t seen it, please do it’s perfect viewing for the season. Thoughts on WILW (SPOILER WARNING ⚠️ (DUH))

Well...this episode was...ok. Tbh besides the Lumity moments there wasn’t much added to the story. You could literally skip this episode & wouldn’t miss much, besides what? Some character development with Willow & Amity & Lumity moments?

So we learn Boscha is the captain of the rugby team at Hexside & she takes the game pretty seriously. She seems really passionate about the sport & gets extra b*tchy during the season so she targets our trio.

We also see Willow is starting to develop more confidence ever since Amity started being a little nicer to her. Boscha even notes Amity has gone noticeably soft ever since Grom. Of course we know why.

Boscha being your typical mean girl for social status reasons though I see a lot of potential in developing her. I could see her being a character closer to Sasha from amphibia (I just noticed Boscha & Sasha rhymes, coincidence? I THINK NOT!) I do fear she might tell Amity’s parents that Amity is hanging around with a human. Oooh the plot thickens.

Good development for Willow, I do like how despite all of Boschas bullying she still decided to be the better witch & not take Boschas place on the team, it did seem like Boscha was actually scared of losing her status which I thought was interesting, they might actually work toward developing her.

B plot was meh as usual. Wasn’t needed but they had to keep Eda relevant, they could’ve used the B plot to tell more lore or important info about Eda & her family. I guess we do learn a bit more about Eda & that Lilith was was also a redhead so I guess Lilith dyed her hair? I think they’re saving the “curse story line” for the finale, so is it Eda who loses a true way?

I really wish they did more with Gus I just feel like he’s just there at this point. I want him to be relevant to the story & be a character. I don’t want Gus to be the stereotypical supporting black friend. There’s 2 episodes left in the series so I hope he becomes important.

I really enjoyed rugby or Grudgby as they called it, I thought the game was cool and I loved the little jabs at Harry Potter and the golden snitch allowing Boscha to win in the end. The team up with Luz, Amity, & Willow was good & I’m glad to see them being more openly friendly with each other. When Luz ranted about how pointless the game was if the snitch is what matters was gold, she said what everyone is thinking. I’m also glad they didn’t win in the end, I know it sounds weird but they showed us that winning isn’t always everything & it’s about having fun, like any game should be. So kudos to Molly.

The training montage was meant to be comedic so I did get a little chuckle here & there.

Now what everyone is talking about, the Lumity. The Lumity moments were cute & I thought Amity being a gay disaster was funny. I’m amazed by how clueless Luz was and even Willow is starting to pick up on Amity having a crush on Luz. Amity’s character did improve over the episodes & we even learn she use to be the captain of the rugby team, so she’s being little miss perfect as usual. I loved how she visited the owl house by the end & they’re just having a good time being friends. I’m glad Disney is really open with this.

I do think this episode is meant to be ship focus as the story doesn’t stand that strong, Molly has said on Twitter that her purpose in her career is to make lgbt content & we can tell. I have to say she doesn’t tell important lore or try to stay within the story, it’s almost like she’s trying to do something else. Of course I do love Lumity but I was hoping Molly would at least try to stay relevant to the story but she isn’t & her episodes feel like filler. Though the last episode she wrote did have some relevance to the future plot line but nothing was important was ever told within the episodes she wrote. Pretty disappointed.

At least Luz learns a new spell so that’s pretty important.

It’s a little suspicious of how everything is going so well, we only have two episodes left in the season and the fact that the last two episodes were filler has me a little worried of where the series stands. Of course no character gets a happy ending like that so we know something bad is going to happen by the end & the fact that the first letter from each episode spells “A witch loses a true way” might be directed towards Amity betraying Luz in someway to join the emperors coven which is why they’re building up to her being so blushy and crushing on Luz so when the betrayal hits it hits hard. Its just a little theory and I hope it doesn’t happen because I do love these two together.

We have two episodes left in the season and I hope it stays plot driven & I’m excited to see where it goes.

Overall the episode wasn’t that important unless you’re a Lumity shipper. It was ok.

My lengthy rambles from The Do Do Sol Sol LaLa Sol Finale:

It’s only five minutes in and I can’t handle it.

Right so Hariboji woke up..definitely a yahoo but I’m guessing we’re gonna only be allowed one miracle per episode..

Goodness I think the biggest problem is how it’s still sounding and filming like a romantic comedy...I mean my nervous system can’t handle when it switches so I don’t want it all the time but at the same time it feels like a betrayal.

I’m trying to laugh hard at the funny parts to process, also grunting, yelling and deep breathing to process

Okay underneath all the Lyme and depression I AM an optimist and I’ve hoped for happy endings with less....but I don’t think this drama will ever be unlinked with sorrow and slight confusion for me because of all the pain I went through.

I’m just hoping I can believe the end more as I process more even though it’s a terrible thing to do to someone and I suffered emotional trauma along with my characters.

I think ever watcher should receive complementary kisses from Lee Jae Wook to help us heal.

So I’m guessing they are saying he though he was dying and maybe he was...I’ve had close calls and so have many I loved. And then there was a miracle but he wanted to wait until fully recovered to tell them...and recover can take a long time. I have Lyme which is just as hard to treat as cancer(more so in some ways because we don’t get the funding...no disrespect in the meant to meant to cancer patients THEY deserve ALL the funding)

And a modest optimism for me would probably be five years at recovery...so I understand the time jump.

And I can’t believe he would make them all believe he was dying unless he thought he was because that’s to cruel....But maybe...I still love him even though that’s terrible. And am very grateful he alive but wouldn’t have minded even more confirmed for my nervous system.

I disconnect a little at the end but still proud of myself for mostly being connected and feeling my feelings....I think waiting was a good idea because despite this raither lengthy feels writing I actually did pretty good emotionally speaking.

I didn’t shut down I actually cried. That’s good for me. And I didn’t feel totally impaled by the sadness! Yay me! And I was even able to connect with my sad dramatic side and enjoy some of the sadness..super proud of myself.

I enjoy Scifi so I’m actually pretty okay with death loopholes and appreciate the writer for using one.

The biggest thing for me is he didn’t die...I can forgive a lot since he didn’t die.

I am still kinda fragile so I can’t really handle discourse about the ending.

Hearts to you and your processing journey but I’m an empath so I can’t really handle others feels at this time.

Stargirl 1.07 “Shiv Part One” is out now on DCU, and I’m here to talk about it.

As my one comment before the episode actually comes out and we get into this little review/recap, I find it really interesting that we’re getting such an explicit two-parter. So far this show has been pretty much exclusively a serial, which means that a two-parter is gonna be extra important and we need to really pay attention to what happens in these two episodes.

I love the look into the morning routine of the JSA. Courtney goes to see the staff and say good morning, Rick is off being an angsty teen, Yolanda is training, and Beth is being buds with the goggles. We don’t necessary need to see this but it’s really great to see and teaches us a lot about these four core characters in just a few seconds.

Ooooh, our first look at Brainwave since episode 4 I think. And Cindy is, at least before coming into the room itself, yet again being a bitch about Henry Jr. being sad about his dad. She was like this at the Halloween party back in episode 5 and she’s doing it again. She only cares Henry Jr. when it benefits her, which I think is telling of the likely “redemption” arc we’ll be forced to deal with for him. At least he does clearly give a shit about his dad. Cindy later repeats this pattern with trying to force Henry jr. to take her to the dance he’s already said he’s not going too multiple times.

I love how the JSA has a little assemble moment in the halls at school. That’s fun. And then they give us a little Cindy backstory and at least gives a clue as to what some of these kids think of her. BTW fucking go Jenny for standing up to her and calling her out. And it ends with some interaction between Cindy & Sir Justin, and then Sir Justin & Courtney (and finally we get some lore & backstory for Sir Justin, how exciting).

Last time for 1.06 I talked about how I love the Barbara moments and the family dynamic we get for her. We get some good moments with her again in this episode. Each episode gets closer to both Mike & Barbara figuring out the truth. I kinda feel bad for Mike.

Honestly this kid playing Henry Jr. is fucking good at his job, he’s playing this losing it and discovering his powers thing really well. In the classroom he seems on the verge of a panic attack the whole time.

The interactions between Courtney & Cindy doing the science experiment are fun. There does seem to be a genuine bit of bonding here and there, in another life they could’ve actually been buds. I think she really just wants someone to be in control of though after Jenny stood up to her. Getting home her mum is scared as fuck though, is it because of Cindy herself or is the Dragon King himself around? This at home scene puts Cindy so clearly in charge and she seems like such a little monster. Wtf is this about “your dad gave me orders” shit. Cindy is supposed to be some genetic experiment or something and I’m starting to wonder if her mum is even a real person either. It’s cool to see that this evil lair is connected to both the American Dream building & Cindy’s house, so I’m betting it could also connect to the King house, the Zarick house, and the Mahkent place. And also the school? How much of this city is connected by these secret tunnels? I like this villain meeting, especially the specific point of how the group agreed to keep their kids out of it.

We love a training montage in this house! Especially low-budget ones. (thank you for the Joey mention yet again. Seriously, for someone who’s “dead” he keeps getting mentioned in literally every episode). Love the display of skill from Courtney & power from the staff, both always good to see, though I’m especially happy to see the rest of the JSA call her out on it. She’s clearly a really leader but doesn’t fully know how to completely work with a team.

Cindy’s a meta, oooooh, love that for her. And a look at her future costume?? Fuck yeah! And it looks great. And now that she’s talking with her father, it’s even more clear how unstable she actually is and how she gives literally no fucks about anybody. Her comments about how she’s “lonely” and has “nobody to talk to” is setting some interesting potential parallels with Beth, and they’re clearly setting up a ton of parallel between her and Court.

I love any and all Cameron scenes, love this kid. Clearly the girl he’s talking about is Courtney, and I 100% believe that Icicle killed the other dude interested in his dead wife. I’m surprised that we haven’t gotten any sort of love plot in this show until now, and even now that a possible one is being introduce, I can already tell that it’s not going to become the kind of overwhelming force that love plots usually are in these shows. Cameron asking Court is admittedly cute. But Courtney, is the middle of the game really the time to go ask her about postponing your hang out? But of course, Cindy is gonna be a bitch about it anyway.

A secret door in the principles office? How fun. And the fact that the staff is just kinda there is beautiful. And Sir Justin sees something huh? Is he gonna actually be around as Shining Knight?? A small thing but the effects of Court blowing the lock on the door is fucking incredible. Cindy suiting up to fight Court is pretty cool. Again, this outfit looks amazing. All the outfits in this show are amazing.I love even here between Courtney & Cindy how clearly out matched the JSA kids are. Yeah Court is holding her own in this fight but the staff is putting in a ton of work. OMFG SIR JUSTIN DID COME OUT TO PLAY AS THE SHINING KNIGHT!!! Fucking iconic. Gosh Pat, maybe in a situation where the staff comes to get you for help you shouldn’t go running around yelling “Courtney” because she’s probably in costume but idk, just a thought.

So there’s a lot to unpack in this episode, and certainly going to be more in next weeks 1.08 “Shiv Part Two.” We’ve seen shots of Henry Jr. using powers & working with the JSA and I’m willing to bet that’s happening next week. I’m interested to see how the rest of the JSA fit into this and what’s going to happen to Cindy for disobeying her dad. These little recaps of mine keep getting longer every week, so expect an even longer one next time. I should probably start doing a follow-up to these.
