Buon Compleanno Belphegor~ As for his birthday I absolutely needed to get one of him as a kid. I had ruminated about doing the panel just before this with him and Rasiel, but well. He would've been made I made him share~ Maybe next year Rasiel, maybe next year. Speaking of this though I find the portrayals of how this went down, in Varia arc Vs Future arc very interesting. Because they're incredibly different in how they're described, in Varia arc Rasiel's murder is described as something Bel did Haphazardly, done without organization likely very sudden stabbing Rasiel to death. But then future arc clarifies from the both of them, that this could have been seen to be leading up from a mile away, and only if their parents genuinely were so neglectful to not pay any mind to this, or in fact encouraged this, that this would have ended up happening. I just find it very interesting how different it is and with the addition of how easily Bel clarifies it, I wonder how it lead to the conclusion that it was haphazard at all, or if it was even as simple as stabbing Rasiel to 'death'. Because it seems like Bel likely just has his idealized version that keeps getting broken down the more he was forced or corrected, you must wonder JUST how much of this is a lie how much MORE of it is to his favour? In the presence of his brother he had to be honest that they had always fought, and while Rasiel makes them move on quickly from this, he does state that Bel is "only saying things that benefit him" and "That he better not forget the face that didn't lose to him" to which Bel has no rebuttal against. What likely happened with the additional knowledge that Rasiel then says that day he was essentially poisoned with medicine, that Bel seeing an opportunity to finally end Rasiel then stabbed him violently very simple to figure. But even still there was likely much more of a struggle than Bel probably wants to admit if it was not considered a flat out loss for Rasiel now that he was proven to be alive to the point Bel didn't bother arguing that point. Bel may have been wounded himself and in his haste to solve that, may have been the small opening of chance for Rasiel to survive that Byakuran needed to manipulate so that Rasiel could survive in the future timeline. (just don't fucking ask me how that works because I don't see how he could affect something so far back. Maybe Byakuran just fucking lied to Rasiel and used other powers as "proof" to convince Rasiel that his survival was actually his doing.)

I know I talk pretty regularly about Faramir's weird command over animals, both because he's my fave and it's cool, and because it's just such a strange detail. But I've also been thinking for awhile about some less direct but still intriguing quotes about how he relates to animals.

So, the usual ones first. Here's Beregond, describing Faramir getting his horse to run towards five Nazgûl while the other horses are fleeing:

‘They will make the Gate. No! the horses are running mad. Look! the men are thrown; they are running on foot. No, one is still up, but he rides back to the others. That will be the Captain [Faramir]: he can master both beasts and men.’

Then there are nameless soldiers in Minas Tirith, watching the orderly part of the retreat across the Pelennor:

The watchers held their breath. 'Faramir must be there,’ they said. 'He can govern man and beast.’

(For context, the ancient Númenóreans he takes after could summon particularly beloved horses by thought alone.)

But also, back in TTT, we heard some interesting details that may be pertinent. Firstly, there's Faramir himself, speaking to Sam:

'Were I as hasty as you, I might have slain you long ago. For I am commanded to slay all whom I find in this land without the leave of the Lord of Gondor. But I do not slay man or beast needlessly, and not gladly even when it is needed.'

And when Anborn reports glimpsing the creature that turns out to be Gollum, he says to Faramir,

'You will not have us slay wild beasts for no purpose, and it seemed no more, so I tried no arrow.'

I think the suggestion here is that it's not standard policy for them to avoid killing wild animals, but a command from Faramir specifically. And he's clear here that he doesn't kill animals for any purpose other than necessity.

And I mean ... if I could get nervous animals to run straight towards Ringwraiths, I'd probably feel weird about killing them, too. But it all does fit together very neatly.

You know, the more we hear about what was going on last year, the more and more convinced I am that it's more than a fan theory that binotto was firmly team sainz. Like some charles and Ferrari fans would say that after a few things last year, but I don't think anyone was 100% serious about it. But after carlos talking last month about the special relationship he had with mattia, and charles constantly highlighting how much he trusts Fred (sometimes unprompted), and now this Xavi thing (which to me, is showing that in trying to sort out his circus, the only thing mattia was willing to do was something that would directly affect charles the most - getting rid of Xavi, the person charles trusts the most on the team) add in all the interviews last year where binotto would agree with carlos' comments and in turn contradict whatever charles would say (remember Hungary) and how he would defend carlos and try to make him more comfortable by making changes to the car for him, but wouldn't follow whatever changes charles wanted even though he was the one in the championship fight. It's becoming more and more clear that he wanted the driver he chose to be the one to succeed with him in charge. Which is such a shame because we had the chance to fight last, but charles didn't have any of the support needed to sustain a championship battle (including a car that is competitive for the whole season) one day someone needs to do a tell-all about what went down last year, because I'm sure it wasn't straight forward

No, I think it makes perfect sense. As much as Mattia might've come across as a calm, jolly fellow who would be the poster boy for the new and improved Ferrari, a team that has a no-blame policy, a team that engages with younger fans on social media, etc., a much-needed balm after the rougher, gruffer, more old fashioned Maurizio whose leadership was being questioned after around four seasons at the helm, I think he has shown that he's a man with an ego. And ultimately that led to him making decisions that weren't all that beneficial or even actively hurt the team's chances.

It's not all that crazy to believe the man wanted to win on his own terms, with a car he built with the help of mechanics and engineers who were loyal to him, and with a driver he had selected. Mattia pretty much "inherited" Charles when he was promoted to TP, but he wasn't responsible for signing him. It was largely Marchionne's idea, and then it was Maurizio who actually called Charles and told him they're bringing him on board for 2019. But Carlos was Mattia's pick through and through, he met with him and was in talks with him and oversaw him putting pen to paper. You saw the shift in his interactions with Charles. Silverstone was the prime example, and I'm so glad he was caught red-handed in that moment. Knowing what we know now... he would absolutely be willing to dismiss Charles's engineer knowing he's someone Charles trusts and feels is in his corner.

One of Mattia's last "gifts" to the team, along with the SF-23, was Carlos's contract extension until 2024. Basically ensuring that the bones of the structure he put in place would remain even if they chased him out (because I honestly feel he knew he was on the way out, sooner rather than later).
