Chasseurs Tagals and the First Vietnam War
Often forgotten in history is the Cochinchina campaign of 1858 to 1863, which was the first major confrontation between Western nations and a Vietnamese state. Sparked by the executions and arrest of European missionaries and converted Christian natives in Vietnamese territory, the French Empire, along with Spanish Empire, decided to intervene and prevent further prosecution.
With the garrison in Philippine colony being the closest force Spain had to Vietnam, it was from here the Spanish contingent would be taken from. The Governor-General of the Philippines would assign the 1st King's Regiment, the 2nd Queens Regiment, and the 3rd Regiment of Ferdinado VII to Vietnam. All three units would be officered by Europeans, with native Filipino soldiers composing the main fighting force.
Dubbed by their French counterparts as Chasseurs Tagals (Probably because most of the soldiers came from the Tagalog region of the Philippines), these troops would serve in the occupation of the Tourane's forts and participate in the capture of Saigon, the main port in the Cochinchina area.
In the battle for Saigon, the Chasseurs Tagals would make a name for themselves, as they stormed the citadel of Saigon, being some of the first troops atop its walls.
After the siege, these Filipino troops would assist in the occupation of the port city, garrisoning fortifications and patroling the nearby countryside.
By 1862 a peace treaty would be signed by the French, Spanish, and Vietnamese state. Under the agreement, the Cochinchina provinces would be annexed by the French, while the Spanish would receive a monetary compensation worth 4 million dollars.
The Chasseurs Tagals would remain in Cochinchina to help maintain control over it against rebellions. However, by 1863 the Spanish contingent would be withdrawn and the Filipino troops would return back to the Philippines.
A century later, Filipino troops under the Philippine Civic Action Group - Vietnam would return to the country and participate in another Vietnam War.

After gaining a little more information about Omashu from the games, I'd like to go into the South Asian/SEA references of the city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The common headdress for men in Omashu are turbans. They wear it the same style of the Cabbage Man which @atlaculture has matched it to a Khăn Vấn, a vietnamese turban:
Tumblr media
The turban does have a similar shape, but depending the style, the Khăn Vấn can be wrapped like a headband that shows hair in the back, unlike the Omashu turbans that wrap completely around the head. Turbans have a long history that spans many cultures and religions, so here are some other turbans I thought looked similar:
Tumblr media
These are the Sikh turbans, also referred as a Dastār. This particular style shown in the example is called the modern Dumalla. I thought the wrapped style was similar to the turban design in the game.
Tumblr media
Another kind are the Islamic turbans found in South and South East Asia, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Bangladesh. The turban can come in different colors and patterns (I found only white ones for the examples, but I've seen green, yellow, and checkered before).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The women in Omashu also wear head coverings and this one in particular reminded me of the hijab style I've seen Indonesians wear.
Another cultural reference @atlaculture covered is how King Bumi's rock candy he encased Sokka and Katara with is like the rock sugar used in Asia. The method of developing rock sugar, or Misri, was invented in India and is the oldest refined form of sugar. It's used as candy or a sweetener for milk and tea. In Karnataka, it's served with water for guests in the summer.
Tumblr media
Lastly, Bumi's name has ties to South and South East Asia. @cyndaquillt has already done a wonderful post going into Bumi's name from a South Asian view:
Bhumi (भूमि, pronounced bhoo-mi) is a Sanskrit word that means ground. The root of the word is Bhu (भू) which means earth.
There's also @ririsasy additions, that Bumi is the Indonesian word for Earth. In Indonesia, Bumi is a name usually given to males, while Bhumi is a name commonly given to Indian women, and is the name of the goddess of Earth in Hinduism.
Tumblr media
There's many overlaps between these cultures and more, but overall Omashu leans towards a more South Asian/SEA setting than East Asian compared to the rest of the Earth Kingdom. Any additions or corrections are welcome!

Framed by bright pink lotuses and a blue and gold border reminiscent of light glistening on water, this Vietwardian muse embodies the northern highlands of her homeland. She is dressed in a sheer black áo tứ thân with the neckline unfastened to reveal even more of her carmine-red áo yếm. Instead of a traditional sash, the waist of her tunic is taken in by rows of smocking worked in marigold-yellow thread. The bands of geometric embroidery in teal and carmine on her skirts and sleeves, paired with her scandalously closely-tailored trousers and silver crescent-shaped hoop earrings, echo the iconic styles of the Hmong. Her hair is wrapped in blue linen and coiled around the crown of her head. She holds a nón quai thao behind her head like a massive halo. The outside is painted teal, while the underside is gilded from edge to edge.

This is the final Vietwardian print design and the one that gave me the most trouble. I couldn’t figure out a good pose, and when I did, i couldn’t get the hands right. And then there was the hat and all those concentric-ish ellipses. And I made a silly mistake and realized much too late to fix it….you would’t even notice if I didn’t say anything. Too late now, and much too tired.

I got the Ace Attorney Apollo Justice Trilogy for my birthday and I forgot how much of the game was like
Witness: “I went to the store on Tuesday.” Me: “sounds about right-“ Phoenix: “Objection!!! There’s a flaw in that statement. How could the witness be at the store on Tuesday… if SHE WAS IN HER LIVING ROOM!?” “Wait what-“ judge: “well Mr. Wright. If you can, you must prove the witness was indeed in her living room instead of at the store, otherwise I will send everyone in this courtroom into the incinerator.” “What!? How- how can I?” And then I look in my evidence and it’s like: my attorney badge. A photo of a cat. A used coupon. Two pieces of tinfoil wrapped together to look like a phone. A photo of my client stabbing a knife into the victim’s chest. A photo of the witness at the store dated on Tuesday. A stepladder.

80s Terry vs LA Nightstalker Richard Ramirez!
I can imagine that Terry would have all the best security systems for the time and realistically no ones getting in… but, for fun’s sake, what would Terry do if Ramirez broke in and tried to burgle the house, even try to r@pe/kill beloved in their bed?! I need to see Terry being violently protective of beloved please 🙏🙃
It's interesting when you think about the fact that historically, Richard Ramirez was taken under the wing of his older cousin who was a Green Beret in Vietnam who used to show him wartime images of torture and gore involving Vietnamese women caught on photography he took and who (possibly) served as an early bad influence on him and then years later on a dark night out in LA, Ramirez just coincidentally, seeing how Karma can be really funny like that, breaks into the mansion of another Green Beret from Vietnam who's more than willing to kill to protect what's his and ---- whoops. We can imagine the rest.😬

absolutely ridiculous deep-cut piece of speculation for fantasy nerds of a reasonable vintage: it is entirely plausible, publication timing-wise, that Mara of the Acoma could have been an inspiration for Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag. discuss (or don't, it's the weekend)

I'm not really any manner of orator, and I average out at the amount of knowledge that passes my feed. I just... you know, recognize that. the US authorities and the bulk of celebrities who played into it to keep their job did those same things to us in the 60s and 70s. it's the same playbook, it's the same colonialism, it's the same human toll.

HWS SEA but make it HetaDND
Tumblr media
Enjoy these rough sketches because I will literally not come back to them until December. 🥲
(From Back —> Front, L —> R)
VN: Bumped into a couple of Quora answers that discussed archery practice, which got me thinking about Viet as a mounted archer, and I immediately thought of the elephants that the Trung sisters & Ba Trieu rode on. So Ranger: Beastmaster — also what if the elephant was from Thai? 🫣💘 Easily a tank through her mount, but can fight well as a DPS (think OW D.Va). ID: The thing is he has the fighting style of a Warlock(: Genie?) but the character of a Paladin(: Oath of the Ancients). He’s giving CR Fjord. 😭💞 For sure, TANK. TH: He’s just a Monk. Debated on his subclass for a long time because he’s a war freak charge-into-the-frontline kind of fighter. Way of Mercy is ironic but I love the imagery of the Merciful Masks (except he gets the khon styles). Way of Shadow — it’s on one possible etymology of Siam (Sanskrit, “dark”). Easily a DPS type. MY: Druid: Circle of the Moon for the Wild Shape into a Tiger, and as of typing this I just realized the moon motif. Mostly support, but upset him just enough and he’ll easily switch gears. PH: Bard: College of Swords for the two-weapon fighting style aka arnis/kali/eskrima. Personally, he’s more DPS than support, though as a latter Dirge Singer & Siday fit the bill. SG: See, the first thing that came to mind was the RO Alchemist class for the Homonculus feature — hence, his companion Fishball. Obviously there’s Artificer: Alchemist for that, but also it would be cool if Fishball is just a “chibi” form of his patron of a water dragon— Warlock: Fathomless. Not to mention Singa would have both high INT and CHA — alas, he’s a Support guy.
(more notes under the cut)
I jokingly called this AU as Dungeons & Drawing Circles, but truth be told I’m not restricting it to being after DND, let alone 5e. Now I’m just throwing hands and calling it a fantasy RPG AU, although out of familiarity, I do refer to DND 5e often. The classes I highlighted above are just there for where I got the inspiration.
I’ve had the occasional “oooh I think [character] would be a [class/es]” hc over the years, but I ended up expanding on the AU as a means of coping with the early months of ECQ. Now there’s so many plot bunnies that I’d summarize as: your og main 8 unwittingly team up for a quest and, over time, they hit a point where they realize that they cannot fight the BBEG alone (or at least just the 8 of them), so they travel around the world recruiting allies a la Suikoden 108 Stars of Destiny.
It’s even got a literal history timeline where preceding events (and characters!!!) are involved with the BBEG and ultimately why the main 8 came together. Think playing a later game in a series where you not only get to meet the playable characters from earlier games, but you get to recruit them.
And I just wanted to draw cool fantasy looks, haha! Nevertheless, nothing is final — especially when I've clearly taken inspiration from some indigenous groups. It's why I shelved this for so long because I need to do more research and it's just not something I have a lot of free time for.

I have spent most my life up to a couple years ago just working to get into college and now that I'm in college I'm just so jaded about it all. Because while I love academics and theoretically I love school, every day at my school and other schools I see how school administrations make it hard for minority students, how free speech is squashed despite them claiming to be beacons of it, how research conducted at universities gets privatized and put behind pay walls or used for war. Idk it's the last day of school for this semester and I've been following all the protests and encampments, and I do see the good people who ARE in university staff. But also, all I can see now is bare connections to capitalism and state violence.
