My favourite side-characters: Contains spoilers!
Misk. He's just... he's such a romantic. He loves his wife, and he obviously treated her right because she mourned him after he died. In fact, he died for her and paid allegiance to Nasir even though he was against Nasir and Ghameq in the beginning.
Yasmin. Misk's wife. Absolute badass, can and probably has stuck her foot up people's arses. Loves her husband, and even though a few misunderstandings occurred, she was quick to reconcile with Misk. She MADE Zafira go to Nasir and confess, even though Yasmin never quite liked the prince.
Seif. He's just relatable — if I was the tour guide for the Zumra. He played a big role, though. Also, he's like very vain and 99% done with Zafira and Kifah. Understandable though not practical.
Aya. Look, she has been through hell. Even though what she did was wrong, she still cared for Lana when Lana's mother died. Like, Aya lost her child due to Benyamin's Dum Sihr, and she still loved Benyamin. She never loved the Lion romantically. She only just saw a hope in his power. What she did was wrong, but her intentions were pure.
The Silver Witch. She makes few appearances, but God, I love her. She's an imperfect person, which isn't seen so much in literature as a "magical and powerful being" is often portrayed as "perfect." While the way she treated Altair was terrible, she still watched over him and protected him and even asked for his forgiveness. He forgave her! She must have been a good enough mother. Also, faking her death for Nasir??
Dean. He was there for like... 3 chapters. He was brother-zoned by Zafira when she was in one of her internal monologues, but he was sweet enough for her to accept his marriage proposal. He died for Zafira, and he even fought for her. Protective brother, what can I say?

A list of reasons why a crossover between the Crows and the Zumra would be iconic
Inspired by this post
Kaz would try to recruit the Zumra for a heist (Zafira can find anything, Kifah can make illusions - imagine the possibilities).
Kaz and Nasir being 2 morally grey traumatised bois who are massive simps - need I say more (Nasir helps Kaz come with a better nickname for Inej than ‘investment’).
Altair would attempt to flirt with Inej and Kaz immediately threatens to rip out his other eye.
Nina, Jesper and Altair being a trio of flirty chaos.
Nina would introduce Kifah to waffles, which she of course loves.
Just all the ladies (Zafira, Kifah, Yasmine, Nina and Inej) hanging out because ✨women✨.
Nasir, Kifah and Inej comparing their knife collections.
Lana would beg Wylan to show her his explosives which he does of course (much to Zafira’s dismay).
Meanwhile Jesper teaches Kifah how to shoot (I just feel like she’d be really excited to learn how to use a new weapon).
Matthias would definitely call Nasir a demjin 😆.
Jesper’s dad and Benyamin wondering how they each managed to adopt several feral children.

We Hunt the Flame
Things I liked:
-       My favorite people in the book were the side characters.  Altair has to be my favorite of the main group.  He just added a layer fun to the book that would have never been there if he didn't exist.  Without him to break up the book ti would have been very boring.
-     The lore of this story was fun.  Calling magic and affinity is a cool small difference for this book.  Instead of just saying someone has magic they call it an affinity, and I like that.  It makes it sound less like a difference between people and more of like a fun quirk.
-     Which ties into he fact that a lot of people in this world aren't afraid of magic.  I like that a lot too.  Im used to books saying that people who have magic are either superior or inferior to those who don't have it.  So reading that people are just seen as normal if they have magic was new and fun.
Things I didn't like:
-     The fight scenes felt all over the place.  It didn't feel like I had the whole picture when they were fighting people.  I felt really out of the loop for a lot fo those scenes.
-     I found the relationship between Zafira and Nasir to be so annoying.  Mostly because I found those to characters to been my least favorite in the book.  They both fell flat for me as characters.  When reading from Nasir’s point of view he just felt really whiny and annoying.  Then Zafira didn't feel very genuine throughout the book.  She was very on note.
Overall:
-       I was very confused for most of this book.  A lot of the time it felt like I was either missing information or I just had no idea what was going on.  This was even more apparent in the fight scenes.    But even though I was confused I did like the book!  It was interesting to read, and had some fun elements to it.  The Six Sisters was fun, and I liked how a lot of the world felt rooted in fairy tales.  The main characters were not my favs, but it had a lot of standout side characters that I loved.  The pace of the book was a bit up and down.  It got good then all of a sudden it was over and got slow again.  Like it didn't really feel like anything was resolved most of the time.  Almost like everything got pushed off to be laters problem.  Confusion aside I did like reading the book, and I have the second one already so Im ready to see where the story goes!
- Rating: 4/5

Zafira bint Iskandar
Some part of her wanted to reach for him, to smooth away the unhappiness creasing his face, to touch the scars that made him him.
'Monsters cannot become men,' she whispered instead, and the darkness hummed its agreement.

Thanks to this gorgeous character art by Arz28, you can meet the Zumra of WE HUNT THE FLAME (my YA fantasy out 5/14)! Zumra, in Arabic, means squad or gang, which in this case refers to my terrible children who reluctantly forge an alliance.
If you love the art as much as I do, you can submit your WE HUNT THE FLAME pre-order receipt to receive a limited edition character card set! More info here!
From top to bottom:
Zafira Iskandar, protagonist of WE HUNT THE FLAME. She never misses, is a bit too innocent (Altair's jokes never make sense for some reason?), and feels everything fiercely.
Then our Prince of Death and resident assassin, Nasir Ghameq! Sad, grumpy, hates himself, is sometimes sassy, and secretly loves every single one of Altair's quips (and also Zafira, but shh).
He's not sure why he isn’t listed first, but then we have Altair al-Badawi! The sultan's prized general who is good at everything. Can be sported flirting with anything that moves, drinking qahwa, slicing away with his twin scimitars, or needling Nasir like it's his sole purpose in life.
Next up, Kifah Darwish, a girl with a thirst for revenge who prefers the power of a blade over the might of the pen. This food lover and elite warrior can usually be seen keeping Altair in his place and making sure no one gets... too optimistic.
Benyamin Haadi! Vain and silver-tongued, this immortal safi (Arawiya's equivalent of elves) fights with banes and poisons as he tries to make up for a secret in his past. Part of an elite circle of safin, he values trust and truth, hence the word "haqq" tattooed around his eye.
