Pink is for Boys

"Pink or Blue? Which is intended for boys and which for girls? This question comes from one of our readers this month, and the discussion may be of interest to others. There has been a great diversity of opinion on this subject, but the generally accepted rule is pink for the boy and blue for the girl. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger color, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl." ~ The Infants' Department, June 1918

Pink is for girls and blue is for boys. But it hasn't always been this way. Colour coding infants as a way of denoting gender was popular in 20th century America. The problem? Pink and blue? Which is for boys and which is for girls?

In 1927 TIME Magazine asked ten of the "leading stores that sell baby equipment" which colour was for which gender. Four stores responded pink for girls and blue for boys; Macy's (Manhattan), Franklin Simon (Manhattan), Wanamaker's (Philadelphia) and Bullock's (Los Angeles). Five stores responded pink for boys and blue for girls; Best's (Manhattan), Marshall Field's (Chicago), Filene's (Boston), Maison Blanche (New Orleans) and The White House (San Francisco). Curiously Halle's (Cleveland) responded that pink was for both boys and girls.

This debate would continue and it wasn't until mid-20th century that pink for girls and blue for boys became firmly cemented in western culture.

However the idea of colour coding infants dates back to the 19th century. According to La cour de Hollande sous le règne de Louis Bonaparte in 1808 in Holland pink was used to announce the birth of a girl and blue a boy. In March 1856 Peterson's Magazine (Philadelphia, USA) advises that the ribbon on a christening cap should be blue for a boy and pink for a girl. On the 23rd of July 1893 the New York Times writes that for baby clothes it's "pink for a boy and blue for a girl!"

During the latter half of the 18th century one of the most popular outfits for young children, regardless of gender, was a white dress with a coloured sash tied around the waist. Pink and blue being the most popular colours, although other colours were worn as well. It would be tempting to assume that the colour of the sash indicated gender but there isn't clear evidence that this was the case. The Oddie Children (above) depicts Sarah, Henry, Catherine, and Jane Oddie. The three girls are all wearing white dresses; two with a blue sash one with a pink sash. We also see Henry Russell (bellow left) wearing a blue sash and Prince William (bellow right) wearing a pink sash.

Pink was just one of the many colours popular in 18th century English womenswear and seems to have stayed popular throughout the century. On the 3rd of January 1712 The Spectator published an article in which a man recalls seeing "a little Cluster of Women sitting together in the prettiest coloured Hoods that I ever saw. One of them was Blew, another Yellow, and another Philomot; the fourth was of a Pink Colour, and the fifth of a pale Green". On the 1st of May 1736 the Read's Weekly Journal, or British Gazetteer reports that the ladies attending the royal wedding wore gowns of "Gold stuffs, or rich Silks with Gold or Silver Flowers, or Pink or White Silks, with either Gold or Silver Netts or Trimmings;" shoes either "Pink, White or Green Silk, with Gold or Silver Lace and braid all over." On the 24th of May 1785 Charles Storer writes to Abigail Adams advising that fashionable colours in English court dress are "pink, lilac, and blue" such "as is worn at Versailles".

In particular pink was popular amongst young women as the colour was associated with youth. Older women who wore pink were mocked as vain for dressing in a way that was seen as improper for their age. On the 31st of January 1754 Lady Jane Coke writes to Mrs. Eyre criticising old women who wear pink:

As for fashions in dress, which you sometimes inquire after, they are too various to describe. One thing is new, which is, there is not such a thing as a decent old woman left, everybody curls their hair, shews their neck, and wears pink, but your humble servant. People who have covered their heads for forty years now leave off their caps and think it becomes them, in short we try to out-do our patterns, the French, in every ridiculous vanity.

For Englishmen acceptable clothing way much more limited. In A Foreign View of England in the Reigns of George I & George II Monsieur César de Saussure writes that Englishmen "do not trouble themselves about dress, but leave that to their womenfolk". He explains:

Englishmen are usually very plainly dressed, they scarcely ever wear gold on their clothes; they wear little coats called "frocks," without facings and without pleats, with a short cape above. Almost all wear small, round wigs, plain hats, and carry canes in their hands, but no swords. Their cloth and linen are of the best and finest. You will see rich merchants and gentlemen thus dressed, and sometimes even noblemen of high rank, especially in the morning, walking through the filthy and muddy streets.

César de Saussure warns that "a well-dressed person in the streets, especially if he is wearing a braided coat, a plume in his hat, or his hair tied in a bow, he will, without doubt, be called "French dog" twenty times perhaps before he reaches his destination" and is not only at risk of "being jeered at" but also "being bespattered with mud, but as likely as not dead dogs and cats will be thrown at him."

For Englishmen dressing "plainly" mostly meant wearing blacks and browns. In his book on macaroni, Pretty Gentleman, Peter McNeil found that in contrast most English menswear that he describes as generally consisting of "monochrome broadcloth" macaroni wore a variety of colours including green, orange, yellow, violet, red, white, blue, gold, silver and of course pink.

But it's not just the macaroni of the 1770s & 1780s that wore pink. We see pink in descriptions of feminine men's dress (both real and fictional) throughout the 18th century.

On the 2nd of June 1722 Sarah Osborn writes to Robert Byng:

I believe the gentlemen will wear petticoats very soon, for many of their coats were like our mantuas. Lord Essex had a silver tissue coat, and pink color lutestring waistcoat, and several had pink color and pale blue paduasoy coats, which looked prodigiously effeminate.

On the 18th of October 1729 the Universal Spectator and Weekly Journal published a story where an "effeminate" man's clothes were described as follows:

He had a flower'd pink-colour Silk Coat, with a Green-Sattin Waistcoat lac'd with Silver. Velvet Breeches, Clock'd Stockings the Colour of his Coat, Red-heel'd Pumps, a Blue Ribbon at the Collar of his Shirt, and his Sword-Hilt he embrac'd under the Elbow of his Left Arm,

In The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748) the effeminate (and queer coded) Captain Whiffle is described as follows:

our new commander came on board in a ten-oared barge, overshadowed with a vast umbrella, and appeared in everything the reverse of Oakum, being a tall, thin young man, dressed in this manner: a white hat, garnished with a red feather, adorned his head, from whence his hair flowed upon his shoulders, in ringlets tied behind with a ribbon. His coat, consisting of pink-coloured silk, lined with white, by the elegance of the cut retired backward, as it were, to discover a white satin waistcoat embroidered with gold, unbuttoned at the upper part to display a brooch set with garnets, that glittered in the breast of his shirt, which was of the finest cambric, edged with right Mechlin: the knees of his crimson velvet breeches scarce descended so low as to meet his silk stockings, which rose without spot or wrinkle on his meagre legs, from shoes of blue Meroquin, studded with diamond buckles that flamed forth rivals to the sun! A steel-hilted sword, inlaid with gold, and decked with a knot of ribbon which fell down in a rich tassel, equipped his side; and an amber-headed cane hung dangling from his wrist. But the most remarkable parts of his furniture were, a mask on his face, and white gloves on his hands, which did not seem to be put on with an intention to be pulled off occasionally, but were fixed with a curious ring on the little finger of each hand.

On the 28th of July 1780 the London Courant reports:

A few days ago, a Macaroni made his appearance in the Assembly-room at Whitehaven, in the Following dress: a mixed silk coat, pink sattin waistcoat and breeches, covered with an elegant silver nett, white silk stockings with pink clocks, pink sattin shoes and large pearl buckles, a mushroom coloured stock, covered with a fine point lace; his hair dressed remarkably high, and stuck full of pearl pins.

On the 6th of August 1792 The Weekly Entertainer published Sketches and Portraits form the Life by Simon Tueopnrastus which included the following description:

Mercator was a youth of some genius and expectation, but by a strange perverseness of disposition, notwithstanding the extreme natural stiffness of his limbs, he had acquired an early attachment to the most finical and effeminate finery; so that, while yet a boy, he would exhaust every expedient of a fertile invention to procure a laced waistcoat, or the most foppish toy; would dangle a watch-string, with brass seals, from each fob, at a time when the frugal care of his parents would not permit him to wear a watch in either; and would strut in a fine pair of second-hand pink silk breeches, and a light blue coat, with all the formal dignity of—a soldier upon the parade.

While pink is mentioned in these descriptions of feminine men's dress it's not singled out as the girl colour the way pink would become in the 20th century. I would argue pink is seen as effeminate not because pink is a uniquely feminine colour but because it was used in fashionable dress. In 18th century England being interested in fashion was seen as an frivolous female trait. Men who showed too much interest in fashion were mocked and ridiculed for their gender nonconformity. "A Man must sink below the Dignity of his Nature, before he can suffer his Thoughts to be taken up on so trivial an Affair, as the Chosing, Suiting, and Adjusting the Adornments of his Person," complains a letter published on the 8th of May 1731 in Read's Weekly Journal, or British Gazetteer:

Decency of Garb ought inviolably to be preserved; nor can there be possibly an Excuse for Dressing like a Merry-Andrew: Rich and coloured Silks are in themselves effeminate, and unbecoming a Man; as are, in short, all Things that discover Dress to have been his Study 'Tis in vain for a Fop of Quality, to think his Title will protect him.

English fashion was highly influenced by French fashion. A popular colour scheme in French fashion was green and pink. A famous example of this colour pairing can be seen in François Boucher's portrait of Madame de Pompadour (above left), she is depicted in a green gown with pink bows and flowers. You can see and example of how this style inspired English fashion in Thomas Gainsborough's portrait of Elizabeth Wrottesley (above right), who is depicted in a green gown with a floral pattern adorned with pink, white and green striped bows.

Fashionable Englishmen were also inspired by these French designs. Horace Walpole refers to the popularity of the colour combination writing to Lady Ossory on the 19th of February 1774 "If I went to Almack's and decked out my wrinkles in pink and green like Lord Harrington, I might still be in vogue". Almack's is referring to Almack's Assembly Rooms on Pall Mall which is believed to be the inspiration for the Macaroni Club. (see Pretty Gentleman by Petter McNeil p52-55) In a letter to Lord Harcourt on the 27th of July 1773 Walpole writes of "Macaronis lolling out of windows at Almack's like carpets to be dusted."

Men who wore green seem to have been just as much, if not more, at risk of being ridiculed, or even assaulted, for the colour of their clothes as those who wore pink. In Pierre Jean Grosley's A Tour to London (originally published 1772) he recalls traveling with a young English surgeon who was harassed by Londoners due to his green French frock coat:

At the first visit which he paid me in London, he informed me, that, a few days after his arrival, happening to take a walk thro' the fields on the Surry side of the Thames, dressed in a little green frock, which he had brought from Paris, he was attacked by three of those gentlemen of the mobility, who, taking him for a Frenchman, not only abused him with the foulest language, but gave him two or three slaps on the face: "Luckily, added he in French, I did not return their ill language; for, if I had, they would certainly have thrown me into the Thames, as they assured me they would, as soon as they perceived I was an Englishman, if I ever happened to come in their way again, in my Paris dress."

Understanding Lennon McCartney Rewatch Part 2.3

Yoko, you're hilarious. Sirens going off in her brain. “Alert! They're into childhood bedroom crush confessions territory. Redirect! Redirect!”

But also I find them so ridiculous. All the men in this. Is it just a case of men always assuming women are talking more than they are? Because I am definitely not hearing Yoko talking for John here. Or is this a rare case?

Paul’s scouse getting progressively thicker as the argument intensifies. Trying to finish his point as John's interrupting him. “But. Bot! Boot!! I do think –”Ugh it's so sexy. Sorry, anyway.

Paul's pep talk to John is super cute, but what does he mean, exactly? “we would actually all have dug to see you kick that telephone box in.” What is this metaphor? What does he want John to break? Or does he just mean John should act out more?

Okay but in this interview, she's definitely doing 90% of the talking even when the interviewer specifically asks just John. So if that's how they are in meetings or whatever then okay I could see that being frustrating.

Ow. Fuck. Hate that moment.

John: another Lennon/McCartney original entitled “All I Want is You”. Paul: Allan Wanna Too . . . Al Aronovitz. John: Al Aronovitz if you'll Aronovitz. We'll both Aronovitz together. Ugh sometimes you can just hear the voices in their heads being like “no don't tell him you like his song, that's pathetic! God, you're such a loser for even thinking it.” And sometimes . . . It's this. There's no in between.

John knows if Paul's singing “Darling” he's talking to him. Look at his expression as he's watching Paul sing “stand by me Darling, Darling.”

“Dig it” is actually insane. Paul: if you want it, you can get it. You can get it if you can dig it up. John: I can hardly keep my hands still. John: if you want it all you gotta do is ask for it. Paul: (intermittent with John, starts a crescendo of “yeah. Yeah! Yeah! YEAH!” and “want it. Want it. Want it. Want it.”) John continues: Nicely. Say pretty please and you're gonna get it. You're gonna get it alright, you're gonna get it. This time you're gonna get it good!

The looks as they're making fun of something important to him. Poor George.

See and here's the thing. If George knows basically what happened in India (which from this quote that's what I'm deducing) then Paul knows. You know?

Okay you know the “I love you, blue” moment from Get Back? I was feeling so devastated for John that there was no response to that and someone very smart pointed out in the tags that this moment could be interpreted as Paul's coded reply which I think is a lovely idea. And seems legit especially since John responds with song lyrics.

Paul: no that's good, that one. John: okay, tick it. Paul: I Love that one. John: thank you. Paul: I really do. John: I enjoy it too sometimes.

Peter Jackson why didn't you include these bits in your film? Huh? Huh? Was it because it was too homosexuality for you?

John's voice singing “you can imitate anyone you know” over teeny clips of Paul doing about fifty different impressions. It's so phenomenal.

John's “pleeeeeheeeease” actually makes me want to cry. He's begging with everything he's got. It's like he's a baby, really truly, and it physically hurts. If I was the one he was talking to in that song, I don't know if I could survive.

But Paul is sure. They're stuck. He can't give John what he wants.

Yoko tries to give John a kiss and he's so harsh. “Stop it!” If my boy ever talked to me like that . . . Let's just say I wouldn't be sitting with him at work anymore.

And then he's laying with his head in her lap, laughing madly with Paul. See what I mean? If Paul would just let John lay in his lap, I guarantee Yoko would not be there.

A coded exchange PJ left out. You can tell when they start to talk in code just by their tone. Suddenly they're a bit more even-keeled, a bit slower, clearer in their speech. Paul: achieve something every day. It may in theory sound silly, but . . . John: in practice . . . Paul: it's even sillier. But in practice, it's all there is. John: this is where it's at. Paul: this is where it's at unless that is where it's at. John: this is where it's at now. Paul: teamwork. A good defense. John: you play ball with me and I'll play ball with you. Paul: could be learning something instead of this you know.

There's a reason Let it Be is played at funerals, folks.

Is it just me or has Paul literally never looked uglier? Linda's a babe, though. John and Yoko both look cool and hot ASF.

Again, the song choices. “Goodbye (Paul's Version. From the Vault.)” Played over the double wedding footage? Okay. Goodbye, my love.

Had this funny idea for an AU: what if instead of giving their baby to Ben and May, Peter's parents left him under the care of Norman and Emily right before their death (perhaps because Mary and Emily were close friends), so Peter ended up being adopted into the Osborn's family?

I can imagine that Peter would have turned into a much more snobbish, condecensing jerkass who thinks he's above everyone, flex about his intelligence and be a huge jerkass to his brother, Harry. It's also a given that Norman would heavily favor Peter over Harry due to his "intelligence" and passion for science (which could shape Peter's condescending attitude towards Harry) and likely put a lot on pressure on Peter, contributing to Peter's superiority complex.

Also, Peter would definitely not go to Midtown High given his privileged upbringing and intelligence, so I doubt he would ever encounter Flash Thomson or Liz Allan. And he would have encountered Gwen Stacy earlier as she's a friend of Harry and that Norman and George Stacy were canonically close friends.

He would still become Spider-man in this universe but given that he already has all the fame and money he wants, he wouldn't need to use his powers for these things. I think he wouldn't bother using them at all at first. Rather than Uncle Ben's death, Harry's death could serve as a catalyst for him to become Spider-man. Perhaps Harry and Gwen went to investigate a gang's criminal activities and Harry asks for Peter's help as his powers could be of use but Peter ignores his request and instead goes to Oscorp's meeting with his dad. Harry predictably dies and Peter thinking he could have prevented his death with his powers tries to make up for his death by becoming Spider-Man, whereas Norman who has already lost his wife in similar circumstances less than a year ago, goes into full blown madness and turns into Green Goblin to "avenge" them by directing his anger at the city as a whole, which he sees as a corrupt, irredeemable place (akin to Ra's Al Ghul in Batman Begins).

Spider-Man and Green Goblin develop a deep seated hatred towards each other. Of course, to keep some spice, Norman and Peter are unaware of each other's identies until the very end. Needless to say that they would be deeply disturbed to learn the truth, especially Norman who swore to protect Peter by all costs since Peter is his last remaining family, someone he deeply loves.

Over time, Peter would grow out his worst traits to become a much humble and heroic person and would have to try to keep balance between his responsibilities as the heir of Oscorp and a superhero. I can also see Peter running Oscorp alone as his father's mental state deteriorated ever since Harry's death so wouldnt in position to run such a large company. I can him developing a some sort of rivalry with Tony Stark initially due to being heads of rival companies. I can also see Peter using Oscorp's technology in crime fighting (while Norman uses it for crime).

Gwen and Peter/Spider-Man form a some sort of crime-fighting duo as Gwen is basically a mix between Oracle and Insomniac MJ. She would be the computer nerd making all research needed or pirating stuff like Oracle and gather clues like insomniac MJ to help Spider-man. Peter would continue his brother's "legacy" by working with Gwen like his brother to take down criminals whereas Gwen continues her father's legacy to make New York a safer place and of course Peter and Gwen develop a romance over time.

Anyway, what do you think about this idea for an AU? It in an interesting idea to explore?

- I'm too sad to deal with anything actually today. I'm so tired. I just want it to stop. I want it to be tomorrow and for there to be music and weather.

- God bless you Glyn for trying to have a very normal conversation about how awful Allan Klein is and instead finding yourself in a room of mad people. He even so kindly frames it as though maybe Klein wasn't as awful with them, rather than their being so ridiculous as to like him.

Ringo: A conman who's on our side for a change.

Yes. Because we know that a conman would NEVER lie about whose side he was on. Very good.

- The last few days of Get Back are coinciding with me being exhausted, emotional and pre-menstrual, so that's fun.

- I like the conversation where it looks like Paul has taken hostages for a lecture about how good the Beatles are in a crisis, and how fine everything is going to be.

- Then the terrible tea party where he immediately talks about how awful it is, because they're not good in a crisis at all actually it turns out and they haven't got anywhere yet, and nothing's good.

- I love that he keeps explaining that he just needs to get his head around how much he hates it, and that that's just how it is now, and then it'll be fine and he will know what it is then. It's just because he keeps pretending it could still be good that he's suffering.

- I don't know even how I read John here any more. I'm lost.

This TV show was supposed to be a TV show of the last album. But when we came to do it, we said 'We'll write new songs.' Cos that's it you see, we always- we never- we always get ahead of ourselves.

- Oh god though. It's a better idea because the whole feel of the white album was to make songs they could play that way, and it would have had less pressure, and more fun. It's a shame they got carried away with themselves. It does really explain why Paul is so frustrated that they're just making an album. When the whole idea was to do something with the last album they made. And then it became to do a new album and do something with that. And now it's just an album and nothing. And then everyone's been saying 'well you could do something with it later' for a while now, but he literally tried that. And it turned into this.

- There's so much to love about the rooftop, and I can't wait for it to be tomorrow, but today I can see why Paul thinks it's just a bit weird to just sing a few songs a few times, where nobody can really see you, and call it a thing.

- It's no good, obviously. It's hopeless to be having this fall down the day before everyone agreed to go on the roof and do what they can. It's no good saying you need six more weeks, especially not when you know George exists. And it's as if Paul hasn't noticed the compromise that he sort of already agreed to. But it's also normal to want the finale to be all the songs. I can see how, having compromised on a proper show, or a big event, he would still want to play a full set, and have the feel of a show, even just for themselves. And they've failed at that. So I suppose he can only have the fall down now, when the failing is upon them.

- And all the sort of underlying pain of course that makes me want to tear things apart. Paul knows John agrees with him, has the whole way through, and even now he still says he'd like to do a good proper show, with all the numbers... but in agreeing with him he keeps this careful distance where it doesn't matter that they agree, they still can't work together. He won't move towards him, won't move with him. This passive calm that says I'm fine, no matter how much it fucks you up.

- It's awful what entirely different ideas all four of them have about what is happening, and what happens next. They're exhausted and not fit for purpose.

- (Thank god though, that they don't suddenly agree to do another two weeks, I wouldn't live through another two weeks.)

John: We don't allow it, you know, we don't allow people to come in and say 'you do that'. Paul: That's why I'm creating artificial frameworks for us to do it in.

They understand their issues; they embrace them and hold tight to them.

- George keeps saying things about how if you just let it happen it'll become the thing it is going to be, just through doing it... as if that means anything here, as if it's not the most passive fairytale. And I guess because he wants it to turn into something where they don't go anywhere or do anything, it will become that. But really the whole project - and what happened with it at the time - proves exactly how little can come out of a lot if nobody shapes it.

- And then Paul says he doesn't want to talk about the roof so they talk about the roof. And then they have a minute where they decide that actually they know all the numbers and it's fine which is lskdjfoiejfs, I can't believe they didn't even make a list until yesterday. And then they decide they shouldn't waste any more time. And then we see them wasting quite a lot of time, but I have to remember that we only see twenty minutes of the entire day and they probably weren't singing ventriloquist songs for whole hours.

- I'm just very sad. It is very sad now we're near the end. Just because of everything.

- Paul saying how he doesn't want it just to end and for everyone to just wander off like they did after the last album. That being very much exactly what is about to happen.

Paul: Any time is paradise when I'm with you. John: Yeah. Any time. Any time at all.

- I can't.

John: I've said yes to every idea that's come up so far. Yoko: Right. John: America, Pakistan, the moon...

- Saying yes to everything, but refusing any real input or effort into anything. I don't know if he genuinely thinks this is a positive thing, or if he knows it's a slow death.

John: Let's do this list, and we can do another LP next week, you know. George: Yeah. John: I've got a few ready now. Oh fuck! Let's have another LP. Be about a month, or something. [...] If we know that we're going to do the next LP in June or July, or something, then we can get ready for it, you know. Paul: Yeah John: Cos this LP is a surprise, really you know. That's why I'm singing One After 909, to get on the LP. Paul: Oh, right.

- John and George claiming that Paul forced them into stuff a lot, when what they mean is that they click onto any small idea going and get all excited, and then get cross when Paul thinks they might follow through on any of it?

- I love that they make Abbey Road. I've felt that a lot this month and I'm stupidly grateful for it today. That they use it to tidy some of this away, and create a beautiful little something that Paul gets to love. Something whole. I'm overly emotional about it, and in my head it looks like a golden snail.

Parts of a Villain

Gaston Leroux’s Erik is a chimera, constructed from the parts of other villains, literary, historical, and mythological. He seems different from every angle and yet, despite his mental instability, somehow has a coherent personality that we recognize from page to page to stage.

Here is a look at some of the villains Leroux references in his unique character. This is not a complete list, so please let me know if you have meta to add - I’m here for it!

1842 Masque of the Red Death - Edgar Allan Poe

In the novel, Erik wears his famous Red Death costume at the Masked Ball, held at the Palais Garnier at Carnival time. In this case, it isn’t only Leroux making the literary reference - Erik himself is making a point about mortality to the other masqueraders. In Poe’s short story, the plague of the Red Death becomes personified as a masked reveler, intruding on Prince Prospero’s belief that he can literally lock death outside his party. At the end of Leroux’s novel, Erik threatens to blow up the entire Opera house, with everyone inside. Presumably, the barrels of gunpowder with which Erik planned to accomplish this are already in place beneath the Opera house during the Masked Ball. He stalks about the party dressed as a literary plague that kills everyone by the end of the story. He is a very clever corpse.

1894 Trials and Executions of Anarchist Terrorists

In 1894, Gaston Leroux covered the trials and executions of three anarchists who had committed acts of terror in public spaces. A year earlier, anarchists had also bombed the Liceu Theatre in Barcelona during an opera performance. Leroux’s direct experience listening to the words of these men during their trials most likely influenced some of Erik’s more violent ideas, especially his final plan to blow up the Palais Garnier while it was at full occupancy.

1894 Trilby - George du Maurier

I have not read all of Trilby, but I’ll start by saying that yes, even the little I have read is just as anti-Semitic as everyone says. Svengali is a terrible caricature. It’s still relevant to point out that Leroux most likely took some inspiration from Svengali for his Erik. Svengali hypnotizes a young woman, Trilby O’Ferrall, giving her a mesmerizing voice (which she does not possess when she is not hypnotized). While Svengali does not hide in the shadows or pretend to be an Angel of Music, his influence on Trilby is similar to that of Erik’s effect on Christine Daaé, giving her career several “triumphs” while also diminishing her health and happiness. Svengali is also seen as the “other” among the novel’s characters, because he is Jewish and foreign. While Erik is born French, his many travels East also mark him as “other”.

1897 Dracula - Bram Stoker

Details about Erik that indicate Leroux read and loved Dracula: the Tokay and roast chicken dinner, the coffin bed, the glowing eyes, reptilian description, the thing with the mirrors. I’ve written more about it using the tag #poto-dracula, starting with this post.

Hades & Persephone

Despite that all of Leroux’s direct references to Hades were removed from the original English translation (thanks for nothing, Tex!), most readers can still see the parallels between Erik and Hades, Christine and Persephone. Erik not only kidnaps Christine, but he lets her go, knowing that she will return. No word about whether the Opera house withers in her absence, but Raoul’s heart surely does! Beyond Hades & Persephone, Erik & Christine belong to the Death and the Maiden tradition. @thephantomessoftheopera has written a great post dissecting these themes: Eros, Thanatos and the Underworld - Death symbolism in Leroux

When Lindsay-Hogg wondered how they would handle George’s absence at the final concert—he proposed saying that George was ill—John nonchalantly suggested that if he didn’t return the following week, they’d call Eric Clapton, the star guitarist of Cream (and before that, the Yardbirds), who George had brought in to play the solo on ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps,’ during the White Album sessions.

Clapton, asked if he had heard about Lennon’s suggestion, refused to take it seriously, except as an indication of the state of the Beatles’ relationship. “That would have been a quip, on John’s part,” Clapton explained. “You see, you get involved with a gang like that—they were a tough bunch of lads, you know. They’d say things like that to hurt one another. They could be very spiteful to one another. Because they were trapped with one another. I got used as a pawn quite a lot after George had asked me to do [‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’]. John would use me to get back at Paul or get back at George. You didn’t really know that this was going on, but you could presume it.”

BEING WEIRD ISN'T ENOUGH not sure why i like this pin, but i like it.

this film takes place on the cusp between the 80s and the 90s, but i loved that these kids drove these 60s/70s(?) cars, i think to signify that they were low income and couldn't afford modern cars? but i love the atmosphere in this shot.

not the greatest screencap, but i adored everything janie (lala sloatman) wore. the cat-eye glasses, the oversized pink pearl earrings, the ponytail scarf. even though i related to nora's artsy side, i wanted to be janie.

mark (christian slater) is like two different people. at home, he wears cool retro bowling shirts embroidered with the name "dick" and sasses his parents, but at school he wears bland clothing (like he wants to blend into the background) and acts all shy.

i also just really loved mimi kennedy as mark's mom, marla, using a teacup to ash her cigarette into, i just thought it was so posh!

again, loving janie's dangly statement earrings, and the colour combo with her floral bolero (?) and sweet pink dress. i didn't love nora's (samantha mathis) outfit as much, but i was intrigued by the piece she wears over her dress. it ties at the back of her neck, and i think again on her lower back, so it's like a... halter vest? the turtle necklace is pretty dope, and though you can't see it in this shot, she is also wearing purple and white striped tights.

paige's (cheryl pollak) bedroom is a dream! the floral wallpaper and the white bed are so lovely, but the seafoam green radio really makes the colour scheme pop.

man i wish i had a teacher this cool! ellen greene as jan emerson (do they call her miss emerson in the movie? i can't remember), wears the coolest outfits, and she is introduced in this amazing mustard suit accessorized with a turquoise bolo tie! the look is amazing, but it also alerts us that this film takes place in arizona.

paige, doing her WASP thing in an oversized sweater over a blouse, with a string of pearls. it's the necklace that does it for me.

i mostly just wanted to see how many celebrities i could identify in this shot: keanu reeves, johnny depp, george michael, kirk cameron, corey haim, richard grieco... (stole this image from imdb as it was much clearer than my screenshot)

i forgot that plaid wallpaper was a thing and i think it's due for a comeback. particularly loving the plaid (shirt) on plaid (wallpaper) in this scene, so cozy, like a cabin!

so many things to love in this scene: number one, the heart curtains; number two, the kitten sweatshirt (the kittens look like they might be puffy and i can feel it in my mind); number three the "homework causes brain damage" sign on the wall--classic! number four, the clear lamp filled with gumballs? and the cow hanging from it! number five and six, the blue radio and the clear phone! i want one!

did you notice that the tissue box in the highschool staff room is the same as the tissue box in the depressed student's room? do you think it was the same box?

nora's room reminded me of my own room in highschool-- walls plastered with images, and plenty of candles. i think nora might have been one of the prototypes for the manic pixie dreamgirl.

Believe It Or Not I Care

mazz's (billy morrisette) denim and leather look is good.

an example of one of mark's drab shirts, but also nora's completely adorable velvet blouse with a peter pan collar! also, i'm learning that the next time i wear a collared shirt, i need to add a long statement necklace.

so this scene is near the end of the film, and i loved mark's shirt here. i also realized that it's more of a cooler, bolder look than he has previously worn to school, so i think it's supposed to symbolize mark coming out of his shell and revealing more of his true self at school/in public. look at me, i get things.

finally, loving this floral blouse and braided leather suspender on miss emerson. i would probably wear this.

BONUS here's a picture of drew barrymore at "an event" for pump up the volume (according to imdb), i'm assuming it's the premiere, just looking cool and badass. i need that jacket.

anyways, most of these pics are my own screenshots, but you should check out higher resolution images on imdb. i couldn't find any articles about the wardrobe in this film, but i did find this 30th anniversary article that was interesting.

I'm so 💓 in love with you for asking, Anon. Any excuse to get on this tangent makes me very happy.

I'm a slow reader and I tend to reread the same books over and over again. The writers I return to, most often, are George Orwell and Donna Tartt, and in particular the following novels of theirs.

I also strongly recommend Orwell's essays. For writing inspiration, the classic one—"Why I Write"—is a little north star I rely on quite often.

I have a weird relationship with Hanya Yanagihara, where I sort of hate her and her books, but, when writing natural scenery, nearly feel like I have to crack open her immaculate The People in the Trees.

Truman Capote's In Cold Blood was the first novel that truly enchanted me with writing itself, and I think everything he wrote, that I've read, was genius.

I also love Edgar Allan Poe and Flannery O'Connor, and would say they rank high in my list of writing influences.

Otherwise, I generally just pick up random books and do a vibe check on the prose, and go for it if I'm feeling it. Recently, I've gotten into Colson Whitehead and plan to read through a lot of his books (but I'm early on that journey for now). I also really like Nabokov, in a way, but usually just drift around his books for the prose, rather than the narrative.

Ultimately, for me, the best writing is straightforward, entertaining, funny writing. I want to laugh and experience joy! So I will also happily pick up a Stephen King blockbuster when the mood strikes.

The glow from King Charles III’s Coronation is starting to fade, but there is plenty more pomp and ceremony to be discovered at these extraordinary royal exhibitions currently being staged across the country.

Stately homes and royal palaces have transformed their sumptuous rooms into backdrops for stunning showcases of royal regalia, period costumes and mementos of past Coronations.

From Blair Castle to Castle Howard; Blenheim to Buckingham Palace, book a date at one of these must-see royal exhibitions to keep the celebrations going.

Through a carefully curated selection of more than 200 pieces, the Kensington Palace fashion exhibition draws parallels between the pomp, ceremony and performance of the contemporary red carpet and the pressure to ‘see and be seen’ at Georgian court.

One-of-a-kind creations worn by Lizzo, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga et al. are juxtaposed with outfits worn by 18th century movers and shakers in the State Apartments, which, handily, is where the showcase is staged.

Blenheim Palace is using the occasion of the Coronation to celebrate its historic connection with the Royal Family.

With a collection of previously unseen artefacts, crowns, coronets, robes, and photo albums, take a trip into the world of royal fashion with an impeccably restored Norman Hartnell silk gown, worn by the then Rosemary Spencer-Churchill to the Queen’s Coronation in 1953.

Also on display are costumes from Bridgerton and The Crown, and a page from a Blenheim visitor’s book, which includes the elegant inked signatures of Wallis Simpson (the future Duchess of Windsor) and her second husband, Ernest A. Simpson.

Originally launched in 2022, the award-winning Castle Couture exhibition returns this summer to Blair Castle, the ancestral home of the Atholl family, with an extended edition that showcases statement designs, intricate embroidery, innovative textiles, and style influences from the 18th century through to the 20th century.

Among the highlights are delightfully delicate ostrich feather and Brussels lace fans by the renowned Parisienne craftsman Duvelleroy, the appointed supplier to Queen Victoria.

There are also pieces from the personal collection of the late Katharine Stewart-Murray, Duchess of Atholl, Scotland’s first Scottish female Member of Parliament.

In a homage to the Regency period, visitors are invited to take a step back into the world of the Georgians with an exhibition that looks at how fashion trends reflected the significant trade, travel and technological advances of the period.

A highlight of the exhibition is a rarely displayed, full-length portrait of Queen Charlotte (of Bridgerton fame) by Thomas Gainsborough, dated from around 1781, which usually hangs in the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle.

The showcase also features one of the earliest surviving British royal wedding dresses: a stunning gown worn by Princess Charlotte of Wales in 1816.

The late Queen Elizabeth II’s beloved corgis captured the hearts of the nation the late monarch’s funeral.

Now they are being celebrated as part of a free exhibition at the Wallace Collection, in central London.

The one-room display features touching imagery of the Queen with her corgis.

It coincides with the museum’s exhibition, ‘Portraits of Dogs: From Gainsborough to Hockney,’ which celebrates human devotion to dogs over the centuries through a carefully curated selection of 50 paintings, sculptures, drawings and taxidermy.

Situated in a pair of beautifully restored early Georgian townhouses, the exhibition showcases centuries of royal fans from across the globe, including a special, printed, English fan marking the restoration of Charles II and the contemporary fans made by The Fan Museum in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee.

The exhibition promises to be ‘not merely a look back on what has been but a rally of hope for what is to come.’

King Charles III has also taken an avid interest in the Fan Museum’s work.

The Long Gallery at Castle Howard, home to the Howard family for more than 300 years, is hosting an incredible exhibition featuring an exact replica of the Crown Jewels and peers’ robes worn to coronations gone by.

Set in 10,000 glorious acres on the edge of the Yorkshire moors, Castle Howard was commissioned in 1699 by the 3rd Earl of Carlisle from Sir John Vanbrugh, who later conceived Blenheim Palace.

The 1st Earl of Carlisle was descended from Lord William Howard, the youngest son of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk (the current Duke of Norfolk organised the King and Queen’s Coronation).

From April 1

During the last Coronation, the hotel had to secure extra flagpoles in order to fly banners for the many different royals and dignitaries staying there.

The archive overflows with Coronation material, which is why Claridge’s unveiled a space showcasing the hotel’s status as ‘the Royal Hostelry.’

Mementos on display include pages from Queen Victoria’s diary, fans created for the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary, and Claridge’s menus and cocktail cards created for the coronations of King George VI in 1937 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

The world watched in awe as the newly crowned King Charles III and Queen Camilla processed from Westminster Abbey back to Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach.

This extraordinary regal treasure is available to view at the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace, alongside the Diamond Jubilee State Coach, which transported Their Majesties to the Abbey ahead of the service.

Also housed in the mews? The famous Windsor Grey horses, which drew the magnificent carriages on the day.

A new exhibition in the Chapter House reveals the key elements of the royal ceremony, which has taken place at the Abbey for nearly a thousand years.

Featuring historic illustrations and archive photography, it promises to unpack and explain the Coronation’s magnificent ceremonial regalia and objects.
